Okay being serious, I don't know if it's the mindset of "I've already dipped my toe in cringe, so I have nothing to lose", but ever since someone corrupted me with the Sonudis initiative (:P), it seems to have created a side-effect that's left me more open to other ships when I previously wasn't all that prone to shipping, which is ironic because I thought you were supposed to be less prone to shipping as you get older, not more. D: But hey, I can still talk about other things relating to characters, and it's not like I stop looking at characters as their own individual entities even if there's shipping involved on my part unlike most Whispangle fans, so it's perfectly harmless, right? ...r-right?

Alas, since I can never catch a break (at least in the Sonic fandom; thankfully I have better luck elsewhere, as MarioXVivian is fairly popular <3), the ones I've warmed up to still seem to be on the rare side of the scale, with the only non-Eggman X Himself/Sonic X The Floor exception I can think of being that I don't mind Sonaze. Sonic's dynamics with Elise and Shahra have endeared themselves to me despite '06's... 06ness with the former, and previously being indifferent for the longest time with the latter. If the jokes I've made about Knuckles being a sheep shagger are any indication, I might be interested in Knuckles X Ariem as well, even though there's pretty much no basis for it beyond one throwaway compliment. I dunno, it's one of those ones where I can see them relating to a lot of things, and I just find the idea cute. Sue me.

I also might like Tails X Amy... and Tails X Marine if that counts as relatively unpopular... @beevean might have also warmed me up a little bit to Knuckles X Amy... and I kinda find Sonic X Rouge interesting too...? Like I said, I know I went past the cringe barrier ages ago, so fuck it.

...Does Staregg count these days, since people keep insisting that Starline's transformation from Something Actually Refreshing to Snively II: Colgate Edition was anything other than a dumbass move on the writers' parts?

I didn't even think about IDW Sonic when I answered this before. I guess my dedication to Eggman's proper characterization manages to overpower even my distaste for Mr. Principles lol.

So for another one... idk, Bowser? While I do think Eggman is much more consistently cruel and prone to sadism on the whole, you don't need a master's degree in Mariology to know that Bowser is not who you'd call a saint either.

I think my copy of Sonic and the Secret Rings is a little different, but I’m not complaining!

They are, but despite that, it still seems to be a somewhat common trend for some fans and YouTubers to be all like "This is a little too weird for Sonic."

As someone who is a certified Non-Secret Rings Fan, I thought it was fine. I just find it interesting how they think that's too far, but IDW's misery porn is A-OK.

On the topic of the Shahra/Erazor relationship in Secret Rings, it seems to be weirdly common for fans who are okay with Gerald being executed (albeit offscreen), the edgier aspects of ShtH and '06, and the zombot arc, to say THIS is somehow crossing the line and too weird for Sonic. I wonder why that is?

I thought both Storybook series are generally well loved for their stories? And both of them deal with pretty dark themes, one implies an abusive relationship and the other grapples with the fear of death...

I don't know how common it is for fans to draw the line at SR, but if I have to guess, it's not about the darkness/edginess: the theme of abuse is... probably more personal, than a criminal getting executed or a zombie apocalypse? It's like in the Dracula book: the most unnerving parts are not about the supernatural, the vampire being uncanny and crawling down the walls in lizard fashion, but the scarily accurate depiction of abuse Dracula subjects the protagonist to.

Then again, Erazor and Shahra's past relationship is left up to interpretation, so I don't think it would be severely triggering, just more uncomfortable.

KYLE CROUSE: Alright, here's one from Lord Van Oskuro! "Cream gets a hold of Shahra’s ring. What are her wishes, taking the limitations of the genie of the ring into account?"

IAN FLYNN: Oh, goodness. What were Shahra's limitations? No phenomenal cosmic power, but she did summon up a whole bunch of tissues that one time. Um... KYLE: [laughs] IAN: I imagine Cream would keep it fairly innocuous and low-key. She would like an ice cream, please. One for her, one for Cheese, and one for Shahra. You know, she's going to share everything, of course. Oops, she forgot to clean her room! "I wish for my room to be clean now, please!" Everything ends with a 'please,' and a 'thank you,' mind you. KYLE: Mhm, mhm. IAN: Well, she wanted a special treat after dinner, but mother said 'no.' She wishes she had that treat, please! Well, now that she has it... that's naughty, she wishes it would go away, please. She knows better, she should do better than that. KYLE: She's too nice! IAN: Maybe she-- Maybe she gets a moment, this epiphany, this broader worldview, and goes, "Wait... I can help everyone! I wish Dr. Eggman was not so mean anymore!" and Shahra's like, [inhales sharply] "Kinda outside of my power level..." and Cream's like, "Well, that's okay. You tried. Thank you anyway!" And Shahra's like "I must protect this child with everything I have." KYLE: [laughing] I mean, except she didn't even try at all. She didn't try anything. But, y'know... Cream- Cream will forgive. Cream forgives, but she never forgets. IAN: [as Shahra] "I'm sorry, Master Cream, but we're on your last wish." [as Cream] "Oh, that's too bad. Well, I wish we can be friends forever!" and Shahra's just sobbing, "Oh, God, she's such a precious source of light in the world!" KYLE: [chuckling] Oh no! Oh no... precious baby.

In Japanese, Shahra sounds so done with Sonic every time when she said “もう”. She was like "Are you sure this will be alright? He didn't listen to me at all. He's going to hurt himself again *Sigh*"

Anyway, to be a little more... let's say tactful, I think Elise has a pleasant design that was simply let down by '06's in-game cutscene models. Shahra has a pretty design too, but I've never seen anyone mock hers compared to Elise. If we're counting NPCs as well, I like Hualin's design too.

In general, I think a lot of the game character designs manage to be very aesthetically pleasing... with some exceptions like Silver. Whether they're going for awesome or cute, they're usually nice. :> This is why I get really annoyed when people go "nah, these designs suck, let's make Sonic a real hedgehog and give Rouge a realistic bat face", as if they learned nothing from the original Sonic movie design.

Already answered this, but I've got another one: Mario.

It's not as common nowadays, but for a long time, Mario got demonized up the ass and was constantly painted as the true villain. This would usually come in the form of being an abusive brother to Luigi (despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary), or oppressing poor innocent Bowser (ignore all the things he's done pls).

You guessed it, it's Eggman.

"He's not so bad deep down" No he isn't.

"He wants to avenge Gerald" No he doesn't.

"He likes Sonic" Respects him as an opponent, hates the shit out of him as a person and would still gladly kill him without regret. Game Eggman is not Boom/X Eggman.

"He doesn't want the world to be destroyed" Because he can't conquer it if it's not there, and as shown with the Bad Futures in CD, he doesn't care what potential dire state the environments and their inhabitants are in as long as they serve him, with the only exception being his own personal quarters (ie: Metropolis in Forces). Not exactly signs of an altruistic person with good intentions at heart.

"He hasn't done anything seriously terrible like the other villains" Sure, if you ignore the time he fired a missile in a populated city. Or the time he enslaved an innocent alien race. Or the time he showed absolutely no moral grievances over Infinite's sadistic antics and only punished him for being a fuck up. Or the time he broke the planet into pieces... twice. I'm sure his repeated attempts to kill children as young as Cream can also be handwaved away.

Eggman is every bit as messed up as Black Doom, Erazor Djinn, etc. Him acting goofy and some (key word: some) of his actions being presented in a semi-comedic light should not invalidate that, especially when Surge - the so-called Forces game changer according to Evan Stanley - lost to a Motobug and tripped over some bolts.

💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?

"All of them" might as well be my catchphrase with how many times I've said it.

I'm serious though, it really does seem that I'm destined to be at odds with the rest of the fandom on virtually everything now. I absolutely hate it. It is not fun in the slightest. You wanna know why I was so happy to join in on all the Vivian gushing when the TTYD remake came out, aside from already loving Vivian as a character anyway? Because I was starting to forget what it was like to actually be on the same wavelength as the majority of a fandom on anything. That's how monumentally unlucky I am with my Sonic preferences.

The characters who are super popular tend to be the ones I'm either indifferent to or straight up dislike, while the ones I vibe towards tend to be largely ignored (Ariem) or criticised for *checks notes* not being reptilian enough (Trip). The most recent games (and comic) that prove We Are So Back are the ones I can't stand, while the ones that actually had my investment are either ignored or placed alongside Colours and Forces as the new Worst Sonic Game of All Time for the heinous crime of having some flaws, by people who unironically white knight '06. There's also the neverending fandom push for Sonamy and all the attention it receives, whereas I remain unconvinced by its alleged chemistry more than ever. And of course, you can compare how I see Eggman VS how the rest of the fandom sees him.

I used to think my fandom status was a tragedy. But now I realise... it's a comedy. *puts on Sonudis facepaint*
