Sonic Frontiers and Nocturnus Connections

Been thinking about this since reveal, there's a lot of Nocturnus bullshit in Sonic Frontiers, however until plaything the game and sitting down I didn't realize how much there was.

I believe this is possible setup for a possible revival of the Nocturnus Clan into canon, re-written to fit Modern Canon better, and re-written by people on the crew.

As posed on the Chaos Map above, I believe the idea is that while the Knuckles Clan (and possibly other unnamed ones) were inspired by their Architecture built around the Master and Chaos Emeralds. (Knuckles says the Religious and Military stuff was inspired. Possibly because the Ancients' influence also influenced whatever religion the Echidnas had.) But then the Nocturnus were inspired by, or perhaps even stole/took, the technology aspect of the Ancients.

Thoughts (slightly posed on the Chaos Map above):

There was a portal on Angel Island, could the Nocturnus have found their way to Starfall?

Or could the Ancients have brought tech with them that the Nocturnus took and kept from the other tribes?

You would think they would bring tech with them when fleeing and settling on Angel Island right?

That tech would be found by now, unless the Nocturnnus took it all.

In Chronicles, they were in a pocket dimension. (Dragged there by an unknown powerful being named "Argus", they were in the Twilight Cage along with other Alien species.) A Possible rewrite is for them to have been trapped in Cyberspace?

If so, would Sonic have freed them, or would they have been in a separate enough section of Cyberspace?

Is it possible they could have tried to replicate Cyberspace, trapping themselves within it?

I am not built for drawing comics. But my buddy @barsikscorner inspired me to kinda revamp my Ghost AU after encouraging me to watch Little Hope (and it was decent... minus the ending i don't wanna talk about that) Some things have changed, including Shade being alive instead of a ghost! And a particular ancient echidna spirit is not too thrilled to see a Nocturnus Clan member...

Basically, a scenario me and Barsik spoke about and was inspired by a moment in the game.

The ONLY Echidna that Knuckles isn't weary of and is actually friendly towards (other than Tikal; but that is a given) is Shade. He might be willing to give other members of the Nocturnus a second chance, but only if Shade insists or supports the decision...he trust her to know if they deserve a chance or not.

So what is Shade Like? How would you picture them getting together?

some context on the sonic chronicles story: the knuckles clan (tikal's tribe from sa1) was at war with the nocturnus clan, which was another more technologically advanced echidna tribe that wanted to Do A Conquest or something along those lines. i think sonic chronicles implies that's the reason for the flashback events of sa1. so the knuckles clan is wiped out by chaos, and shortly afterward the nocturnus clan is thrown into interdimensional space jail (?) by an interdimensional space god (?) and they use the alien technology there to get even more technologically advanced. they manage to find a way back to mobius, but time in the interdimensional space jail flows differently, so though they were only in there for some nebulous few years, 4,000+ years passed in the regular world. it's stupid and it's awesome. i haven't played this game in many years so i had to skim the wiki page for a refresher lol

shade is part of the nocturnus clan, she's like an assassin type warrior lady that works as the big bad's blindly devoted right hand man for the first half of the game, then gets betrayed and swaps sides to join the good guys. she's pretty much what you would expect for that kind of archetype, but since it's one of my favorites (ESPECIALLY when done with female characters <3 women's wrongs etc etc) i like her a lot even if the rest of the game isn't very good. because of the ken penders lawsuit (apparently this game riffs pretty hard on some concepts from the archie comics, but i haven't read those so iunno) none of this is canon anymore and we will never see shade ever again. sadge. (apparently ken penders thinks he owns her now and is making her into nfts. this is the worst timeline)

SO my reasoning for being #1 tikade crusader: technically shade and tikal were born/alive at the same time and it's very likely that at least shade knew of tikal, since she's the daughter of the chief of the clan they're currently at war with. it's got some real good romeo & juliet spice to it. i think the contrasts between their characters (calculating warrior on the cusp of turning into a living weapon vs peaceful pacifist who just wants to live in harmony) is sauurrrr good. narrative foils and all that. and the inherent tragedy of it too!! knowing that tikal is going to seal herself in the master emerald!! and shade is going to slip away thousands of years into the future!! no matter what it'll always end the same way!!

many many years ago i had this fanfic concept in my head where shade is sent to assassinate/kidnap tikal for political reasons, but tikal manages to talk her out of it and the two of them bond and begin to meet in secret, and their romance blossoms from there. this is pretty much still the definitive "how it would happen" scenario for me. i like to think their relationship would help them work through the uncertainty in both of their lives and situations and give them a new perspective on what they want for themselves and what they want their futures to be like. it'd be cute if their attitudes influenced each other, like shade deciding she wants to abandon her life of violence and run away with tikal, while tikal decides she wants to stay and fight (figuratively anyway) their circumstances so they can be together.

once the whole thing with perfect chaos goes down, i don't think shade would've been present so she wouldn't know what tikal had done and where she is, and only thinks she died along with everyone else, which is SUCH good drama. i like to think the grief of losing the woman she loved would've caused shade to regress and further entrenched her into the person she is during sonic chronicles, unflinchingly loyal to ix and the nocturne clan, and she would've tried to forget about her time with tikal and just focus on her mission. yum

i still really like this concept.... i'm not good at writing fic but maybe i'll try to do a little comic about it someday. this is all like 2 steps removed from canon in my brain and i need everyone to see them the way that i do because there's so much potential here...... but ya that's why i like tikade

(hey so while writing this i read through tikal's wiki page and apparently she's ALIVE now?? at the end of sa1?? which is funny because all this time i thought she straight up died. like after she reunited wwith chaos her spirit was at rest or some shit. but that's kinda awesome because at the end of sonic chronicles shade is also back on mobius so they could have a reunion, LOVE WINS!!!!)

You would be correct about that, for better or for worse, Finitevus has the echidna warrior's attention. They're a bit stunned to speak, instinctual tension seizing her shoulders and hands tightening into fists. Another echidna, but not one of her own clan's. It'd be a relief to Shade if it weren't for the other millions of questions now barraging her mind. Hah. Is this how Knuckles felt when they first properly revealed themself to him?

" I.. You're.. " Amidst the ridged stuttering, strawberry blonde blinks, trying to recollect themself. What was that he said? A remark about the vices that plagued her imprisoned people.

" You know of us, " Finally, they manage to respond. The fact he was able to recognize her as a Nocturnus soldier told them that he's likely encountered their people before. " ...Who are you? "

starfall islands being how it is and how connected we just found out it is/could be to echidna stuff (and how knuckles went on a "last time on sonic adventure" with echidna lore and talked about how alone he is) etc. etc. this could easily end up being a sneaky way of re-writing and bringing nocturnus into the canon. it would be so simple. it has the same aesthetic, they created ai, they created technological weaponry, they were trapped in some kind of dimensional bubble, they were echidnas

Lara[-Le], Last Chieftess of the Knuckles Clan

Angel. Would die for 10/10

Was trained as a warrior, but her true passion did lie in healing and caring for others; she pretty much ended up the village’s designated babysitter because she loved kids so much 

Married Locke when they were both young adults, and she pretty quick became pregnant with Knuckles 

Locke was very interested in the Master Emerald, as the Clan had deigned themselves its guardians as one of their own was inside. He liked to study its properties/magic/etc 

One of his experiments backfired as he ended up with a dream premonition of their son’s future. As a result, he panicked and pulled some shit 

Haven’t decided what exactly but it affected baby Knux and pissed Lara off a lot

Either Locke died in ~mysterious circumstances~ or she kicked him tf out, but basically Knux never really knew his bio dad 

She raised Knuckles alone for a bit but after having a bit of a stress breakdown, her childhood best friend Wyn stepped in to help her 

They’d always been platonic but in the months-years he was helping her with her son they ended up getting romantic 

Eventually married Wyn and had her other kid that I am not naming Kneecaps, jfc, 

At some point inbetween leaving Locke and marrying Wyn, she was elected/appointed Chieftess  

As uh. Knuckles is the last of his Clan. we can assume something happened to her unfortunately 

I feel like she and her clan probably died/vanished/what-the-fuck-ever when Knuckles was about ~6-8. As such, he doesn’t really remember her well, but what he does remember is nice, he thinks 

design notes:

Her crescent mark is a little skinnier than Knuckles’s, as well as a lighter shade. Her tails is a bit longer, skinnier and more crooked as well. 

She does have a similar quill-direction to her son, as well as the upward-turned eyes. I like to think they have a similar body type as well. 

Her dreadlocks get shorter the farther back on her head. They are also curvier/curlier than Knuckles’s. 

Of her dreadlock wrappings, the left-to-right tie wrap always above the right-to-left. 

Lara’s leftmost bang (her right) is split from her longer dreadlock; the other two are separate locs. The middle bang has part of the Chieftain Marking across it. 

While we don’t have much info on the canon Knuckles clan, I decided that the teal feathers and head markings of Pachacamac are indicative of the Chief’s status. Hence why they are not included in the top left image. 

Their tech was advanced a bit since, you know, 4000 years ago, but they still dress relatively the same, they’re a very culturally-focused clan.

I decided that the surviving Knuckles would likely idolize Tikal, seeing as she saved their dumbasses from Chaos; thus, the center of Lara’s skirt has a diamond reminiscent of Tikal’s skirt.

Her skirt is also gold as a reference to her original robe. 

Yes that is absolutely her singing “Back to Before” in the top left. 

Was debating between that and “First Burn” lyrics but I evenutally decided on BtB... if y’all wanna see the version with First Burn I can drop that

Sixteen years old, lesbian, huge lesbian, cannot stress enough how gay she is, also she’s trans cause I said so 

Keeping a bit of her backstory; she was born to two echidnas, but the children of her dad’s first wife were bitter and may have gotten murderous 

This might be why she has a robot arm and dreadlock. oops 

She was highkey traumatized by all that™, but eventually her half-sibs were taken care of and she was adopted into the same family as Shade

She immediately decided to be a better sibling than hers were and took it upon herself to be Shade’s Cool Big Sister and honestly? She’s doing a great job. 

She’s supportive, sweet, teaches her how to do things like tie a headband and shoot a gun, comforts her when she’s depressed, etc. Amazing. 

Despite her troubled past, she keeps optimistic and adventurous, always looking forward to what tomorrow could bring. 

She’s a bit too daring sometimes. She likes to bungee jump off of tall buildings and it gives Shade a heart attack. 

Her and Knuckles are now Chaos Cousins™ 

They are each other’s Gay Cousin™ it’s great 

I still like the idea of her in the Chaotix but I think her and Vector’s dynamic should literally just be the “Adulting” song from Phineas and Ferb 

design notes: 

She is very tall™. No I don’t know why. 

Julie-Su’s robot arm, though different colors, is designed after Emerl’s arm, as the Nocturnus built gizoids. 

Left side of her face has shorter dreadlocks, making up her bangs. Only exception is the dreadlock in the far back. 

All dreadlocks, except some bangs, drift to the right (her left). 

I like to think in the ShadeHug image she’s singing “All is Found” to calm her down from a panic attack.

i know it wasn’t an ability she had in the game but honestly,, shade can definitely glide with her quills. they’re long and thick enough that if she wasn’t wearing that headband, if she let them drape down, she could easily use them to glide the way knuckles does.

i honestly love the idea of knuckles showing her how tbh. them exchanging knowledge and fighting techniques is just really cool i feel like they could really learn a lot from each other.
