Shabbat Shuva 2023 / שַׁבָּת שׁוּבָה 5784
Shabbat that falls between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Shabbat of Returning) 🕍
Shabbat Shuva for Hebrew Year 5784 begins at sundown on Friday, 22 September 2023 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, 23 September 2023. This corresponds to Parashat Ha'azinu.
Shabbat Shuvah (“Sabbath [of] Return” שבת שובה) refers to the Shabbat that occurs during the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Only one Shabbat can occur between these dates. This Shabbat is named after the first word of the Haftarah (Hosea 14:2-10) and literally means “Return!” It is perhaps a play on, but not to be confused with, the word Teshuvah (the word for repentance).

16 September 2023 - 1 Tishrei 5784
Today is Rosh Hashanah, the first day of the Jewish year.
Observances include the sounding of the shofar, a ram’s horn, baking the challah into a circular loaf to signify the cyclical nature of the year, and using the greeting “L’shanah tovah”, which means “To a good year”.
Rosh Hashanah begins the High Holidays, which culminates in Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.
Today is also Shabbat! Shabbat shalom!
Holidays to Anticipate in Tishrei: Major Holidays:  Rosh Hashanah on 1-2 Tishrei (September 15-17) Yom Kippur on 10 Tishrei (September 24-25) Sukkot on 14-21 Tishrei (September 29-October 6) Shmini Atzeret on 22 Tishrei (October 6-7) Simchat Torah on 23 Tishrei (October 7-8) Minor Holidays:  Tzom Gedaliah on 3 Tishrei (September 17-18) Special Shabbatot:  Shabbat Shuva on 8 Tishrei (September 22-23)

Whyyy am I having such bad luck today. Was trying to parallel park on a hill and my breaks malfunctioned and I totally crunched this dude’s bumper. He was nice about it but yikes. Then bc of that I was running late to shabbat shuva. My car also has a cracked fuel line and it’s getting to the point I don’t want to be driving it until l can take it in. Then I went to get groceries and somehow spent 30 dollars more than I meant to even though there were lots of things I purposefully didn’t buy. And I didn’t have enough in my bank account so my card got declined and I had to use my credit card. Just. C’mon

Jewish scholars in the ninth century explained that since the Hebrew word גבר means both "man" and "rooster", a rooster may substitute as a religious and spiritual vessel in place of a man.
Because Hebrew has homonyms, you can outsmart “god” by torturing a chicken to make it atone for your sins, and he’s either too stupid to tell the difference, or too disengaged to mind in the slightest.
[That awkward moment when Xtians, marvelling at how bizarre, primitive and barbaric this tradition is, suddenly realise that Jesus (supposedly) was a swung chicken, serving the exact same purpose.]

Shabbat Shuva in the New Testament...?
Shabbat Shuva in the New Testament…?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shabbat Shuva is the name given to the Shabbat that falls between Rosh haShana and Yom Kippur. Shuva means “return” and it is named after the passage in Hoshea that is always read on this Shabbat – Chapter 14, verses 1 to 9 (or verses 2 to 10, depends on your version).
“Return, Israel, to the Lord your God. Your sins have been your downfall! Take words with you and return to the Lord . Say to…

Shabbat Shuva is drawing near (it's already Shabbat in some places of the world), so here are few words about the concept of Teshuvah in Judaism.
"Teshuvah" is often mistranslated and misrepresented as "repentance", but that's not what it means. If I were to use an English word to try and encapsulate what Teshuvah means, I'd use "homecoming" and "reunion".
"Teshuvah" comes from the Hebrew root word meaning "to return".
There's a concept in Judaism of life being a long path we walk, and sometimes we stumble off the path or walk off of it deliberately, but we always have a chance to retrace our steps or find our way back onto the path.
Ideally, we walk the path of good deeds and righteous actions. But we're human, and sometimes we lose our way. Hashem knows that, which is why we're always able to get back on track. It's not a race, just as long as you're on the path.
Doing "Teshuvah" isn't beating yourself up for getting lost. If you just dwell on your past missteps, you'll never get back on track. You have to take the steps to return, and Hashem will gently guide you back on your way. Hashem doesn't want you to self-flagellate. He wants you to return.
I wish everyone the best luck on their paths during these Ten Days of Teshuvah, and a Gmar Chatima Tova.

Shabbat Shuva 2022 / שַׁבָּת שׁוּבָה 5783
Shabbat that falls between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Shabbat of Returning) 🕍
Shabbat Shuva for Hebrew Year 5783 begins at sundown on Friday, 30 September 2022and ends at nightfall on Saturday, 1 October 2022. This corresponds to Parashat Vayeilech.
