The hardest Daedra to write from a Falmer perspective are Molag Bal, Mehrunes Dagon, and Sanguine.

Molag Bal I've had some leeway in, as my current thinking is that Bal is the truest reflection of Lorkhan's corpse. Life in the tundra is cruel, often needlessly so, and "worship" of Molag Bal is, if I had to make an analogy, more of how the Reachfolk treat Molag Bal: A fact of life, and one to be endured. Molag Bal comes after the last sunset of the year, and is the worst of winter. You do not worship it, you endure it.

Mehrunes Dagon is a very tough nut to crack. The Falmeri culture leaned heavily towards stasis, and the Lord of Change is a polar opposite. @aanthirin and I briefly brainstormed on this and she had the brilliant idea of Dagon being brought from the frozen hell of the north, burning into the Ice Elves until nothing remained. First comes the searing fire of pain, then the death. And if you survive the death, you may yet understand.

There's argument for a Dagonite cult that flourished among the survivors of the Falmer-Atmoran War. After all, Auri-El was left bereft and betrayed, and now these homeless sorts find themselves in the exact same position. Who wasn't to say that Mehrune Dagon, Lord of Change, the Ardent Hope, was not also fighting against this upheaval?

Sanguine remains impossible. Being the Prince of Debauchery, he simply doesn't seem to mesh with a culture whose idea of debauchery is unlike the cultures in which we live. Homosexuality isn't debauchery, it's simply a way of being. Being transgender isn't debauchery, it's simply a step in the journey to self-realization. Addictions weren't seen as moral failings, and therefore addicts weren't cast aside but treated and consoled. The Falmer only executed people for one crime, and it wasn't murder.

I realized then that Sanguine wasn't seen as a creature of baseless impulse by the Falmer, but rather the worst aspects of Molag Bal amplified. If Molag Bal is the darkness after the last sunset of the year, Sanguine is the sick bastard who knows that in the dark, there are no witnesses.

Last semestre of English I was technically supposed to read Kafka's the trial. I didn't but managed to write a great paper on humour and authoritarianism and The trial and Milan Kundera's Žert as a way of coping as well as resistance but that paper isn't the point.

Anyway seeing discussions about Kafka's Jewish identity and how it explains his writing makes the trial quite relatable especially now.

Like dealing with antisemitism it's like being on trial without knowing why. Endless and constantly changing, forced to play by rules that have no rhyme or reason. The absurdity of the process and accusations would be funny if it weren't for the fact that I could end up dead like Josef K.

In addition to inciting fear and hiking up tensions in the past few weeks, organizing various paid goons to play at a counter-protest and to threaten students, blocking intercity and city public transport and rolling out special police forces and armored vehicles, last night in Belgrade the absolute cowards constituting the Serbian leadership apparently ordered the use of what seems to be a sound cannon on hundreds of thousands of people, in order to interrupt and break up an ENTIRELY SILENT, PEACEFUL 15-minute vigil. A vigil for victims of an “accident” that same leadership is still refusing to take any accountability for, systemically or individually, 4+ months later.

No incidents preceded this, by the way. This wasn’t a riot. Not that it should matter, since these tactics are never implemented to protect anyone anyway, but I feel compelled to say that. There was zero “justifiable cause”. There weren’t even any uniformed police in that area that anyone could see.

People were rightfully terrified because a) this has never happened before so they legitimately didn’t know if there’s something crashing down on their heads (which is how we got here in the first fucking place, isn’t it) or a bomb going off or what, and b) there was absolutely ZERO reason to expect it to happen then, other than the government getting pissy and taking issue with 300,000+ (at the most rigid estimate) people coming to protest peacefully.

And to be perfectly clear, I don’t think using an LRAD in this way is EVER justifiable, considering it’s almost guaranteed to cause mass injury as a result of stampedes as well as possibly hearing damage—but the sheer pathetic spinelessness of using it out of nowhere on a bunch of people, including the elderly and babies in fucking strollers, who are literally just standing still and silent for fifteen minutes to honor and grieve a deeply traumatic national tragedy is just…heinous.

As of right now I’m not sure how many people got hurt (in this incident as well as the subsequent physical attacks on the students from “random” hooligans and clashes with the cops) but I know it’s one too many, and there’s civil rights orgs offering free legal support to those who did.

And here’s the punchline: after all that, the fucking police had the gall to issue a statement saying “this wasn’t us, the use of sound cannons is illegal in Serbia.”

Oh, really? Who or what was it then, do you think? Maybe a particularly loud bicycle horn sent all those people ducking for cover? Somebody’s kid brother pulling out a portable speaker for shits and giggles? Or are you implying that somehow, some 19-yearold who’s studying film and works at the local coffeeshop or whatever is ordering American-grade sonic weapons off of Temu to use for the students’ nefarious government-toppling schemes?

And maybe the question we should be asking is, “how in the world did we get to a point where the regime can afford to be so transparent? As if it’s normal for the police to even deny something like this. As if the alternative—which would be that we simply have rogue off-label weapons floating around, I guess, which are being used illegally on thousands of members of the public by some unknown force that the cops can supposedly neither predict nor control—even if it were true, is somehow fine and doesn’t make the govt look even more inept and culpable?”

Milunka Savić, the Most Decorated Female Combatant in History: Savić disguised herself as a man in order to join the Serbian army during the Balkan Wars, then served again during WWI, earning medals from Serbia, France, Russia & Britain; she also provided medical support to anti-fascists during WWII and spent 10 months in a Nazi concentration camp

This is a total rewrite of a post that I did last year, with much more detailed information, more photos, and some additional sources.

Milunka Savić is regarded as the most decorated female combatant in history. She fought for the Serbian Army during both of the Balkan Wars, before returning to the battlefield again during WWI. Savić was wounded in battle on 9 separate occasions and survived the Serbian Great Retreat, making the perilous journey across the mountains of Montenegro and Albania through the dead of winter with a serious head injury.

Her military career began during the First Balkan War in 1912, when her younger brother was called up to serve in the Serbian army, and she decided that she would covertly take his place. She cut her hair, wore men's clothing, and presented herself as her brother.

She was able to hide her true identity for quite some time. Her skills as a soldier quickly became evident as the war progressed, and she earned her first medal/promotion during the Battle of Bregalnica in 1913. Unfortunately, she was hit by shrapnel from a Bulgarian grenade during her tenth deployment, causing injuries to her chest and abdomen, and those wounds (along with the subsequent medical treatment) ultimately led to the discovery that she had lied about her identity.

In recognition of her accomplishments on the battlefield, her commanding officer decided not to punish her for the initial deception, but informed her that she would not be allowed to return to combat -- as a woman, she could only be transferred to the nursing division instead.

As the story goes:

Savić was called before her commanding officer. They didn't want to punish her, because she had proven a valuable and highly competent soldier, and the military deployment that had resulted in her [sex] being revealed had been her tenth; but neither was it suitable for a young woman to serve in combat. She was offered a transfer to the Nursing division. Savić stood at attention and insisted that she only wanted to fight for her country as a combatant.

The officer said he'd think it over and give her his answer the next day. Still standing at attention, Savić responded, "I will wait." It is said he only made her stand an hour before agreeing to send her back to the infantry.

Savić was able to serve in a combat role throughout the remainder of the Balkan Wars.

The Second Balkan War finally came to an end in 1913, but that peace was short-lived, as World War I erupted just a year later. Savić returned to the military once more, serving in the elite "Iron Regiment" of the Serbian army.

Savić received the Serbian Karađorđe Star with Swords medal on two separate occasions during WWI; the second medal was given to her after the Battle of Crna Bend in 1916, where she was credited with single-handedly capturing 23 Bulgarian soldiers. She received several other medals throughout the course of her career, including the French Legion of Honor (twice), the French Croix de Guerre, the Russian Cross of St. George, the British Medal of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael, and the Serbian Miloš Obilić.

She suffered a serious head injury while fighting along the Macedonian front, and she was still gravely wounded when Austro-Hungarian, German, and Bulgarian forces gained control of Serbia in the winter of 1915. The Serbian army was then ordered to make a full retreat from Serbia; Savić and her fellow soldiers, along with the Serbian government and more than 200,000 civilians, were all forced to flee through the mountains of Montenegro and Albania in the dead of winter, hoping to reach Allied forces along the Adriatic Coast -- a perilous journey that would later be known as the Serbian Great Retreat (or the Albanian Golgotha). Roughly 400,000 people embarked on this journey, and less than 180,000 of them survived, eventually reaching the Allied ships along the Adriatic coast.

Despite her injuries, Milunka Savić was among the survivors. She was sent to an infirmary, where she spent several months recovering from her injuries, before she returned to the battlefield alongside Allied forces.

At the end of the war, the French government offered to provide Savić with a full pension and living accommodations in France, in recognition of her actions while serving alongside the French military during WWI. She ultimately declined the offer and chose to retire back in Serbia instead, where she and her husband settled down to raise their daughter and three other girls that Milunka had adopted. The couple would later separate, however, and Milunka was left to raise her children as a single mother, working at a local bank to make ends meet.

In 1941, Serbia (which was then part of Yugoslavia) fell under Nazi occupation. During this period, Savić was involved in providing medical support to local partisans and anti-fascists who had resisted the Nazi occupation. She was eventually arrested by German officers; there are differing accounts of the events leading up to her arrest, with some sources suggesting that she was arrested as a result of her involvement with the local partisans and other anti-fascist elements, while other sources claim that she was arrested after she offended several Nazi officials by openly refusing to attend a formal banquet that was being held in honor of the German military campaign. In any case, she was imprisoned at the infamous Baljinca Concentration Camp for ten months before finally being released.

She faced other forms of hardship in the aftermath of WWII, as she struggled to support herself and her children. She worked several low-paying jobs over the years, while living in a dilapidated, decaying house in Belgrade. Her name (and her long list of accomplishments) had largely faded into obscurity by then.

It wasn't until the early 1970s that her involvement with the military finally began to receive more widespread attention, both in Serbia and abroad. Following the 1972 publication of an article that told her story, her local community in Belgrade quickly rallied to provide her with newer, more suitable living arrangements.

Sadly, she passed away within just a year of the article's publication.

In 2013, Milunka Savić's remains were relocated from the small mausoleum where they had been interred since 1973, and she was reburied in Belgrade's "Alley of the Greats," where some of the most well-known and most widely respected Serbians are laid to rest.

All The Women’s News You Missed This Week

3/3/25-3/10/25

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump delivered a joint Congressional address. Democrats wore pink to protest this and two female Democratic leaders Sen. Elissa Slotkin and Rep. Alexandria Occasio Cortez delivered notable rebuttals.  You can watch Slotkin’s address here and read an opinion about AOC’s Instagram live rebuttal here. The world celebrated International Women’s Day with protests both inside the US and abroad, most notably in Latin America. Giselle Pelicot’s daughter has also accused her father of rape, tragically, without her mother’s support. 

The news was filled with feel-good stories about women’s rights, particularly in the Global South, and a variety of interesting investigative pieces centering women’s voices, which left me wondering why those stories aren’t covered as heavily 11 months out of the year. 

Fights continue in the US and Poland for reproductive justice. Women continue to make news for leadership lead on a variety of political issues, both as world leaders, like Mexico’s Sheinbaum, or as activists, like the Berlin Women’s Day protesters who were brutalized by police due to their support of occupied Palestine, Serbian women leading protests against government corruption and a Caribbean woman who founded a nonprofit to fight for disability justice in Antigua.
