Threes a formula
Word count: 565
Pairing: Toto Wolff x Susie Wolff x reader, feat. Jack
Summary: As Y/n bakes Jack’s birthday cake, the Wolff family’s warmth and affection deepen.
A/n: Is it okay if the chapters are shorter? Hopefully, that way, I can write more often. Let me know if that works for you, and if not, feel free to share your preferences!
________________________________________________________
Chapter 7: Sweet Celebrations
The kitchen smelled like vanilla and warm sugar as Y/n carefully poured cake batter into a pan, humming softly to herself. It was Jack’s birthday, and she had promised him a homemade cake—chocolate, of course, with blue frosting, because blue was his favorite color this week.
Toto had taken the day off to celebrate, opting to skip the Japanese Grand Prix in favor of spending time with his family, which, in many ways, included Y/n now. Susie leaned against the counter, watching Y/n work with a soft smile, while Toto stood nearby, sipping his coffee, looking far too handsome in his casual sweater.
Jack sat on the kitchen island, kicking his little feet in the air as he watched Y/n mix the frosting. “Is it ready yet?” he asked for the fifth time in the last ten minutes.
“Almost, birthday boy,” Y/n teased, tapping a bit of flour on the tip of his nose. “Patience is a virtue.”
“What’s a virtue?” Jack scrunched his nose.
Toto chuckled. “Something you learn to appreciate when you’re older.”
“Like Y/n?” Jack asked innocently, looking between his parents and Y/n, who was now blushing as Toto smirked.
“Exactly like Y/n,” Susie said, nudging Y/n’s side playfully. “She’s practically a saint for putting up with all of us.”
Y/n rolled her eyes but smiled. “Speaking of birthdays, do you know what’s special about tomorrow, Jack?”
Jack’s eyes widened. “Is it another cake day?”
“Sort of.” Y/n laughed. “It’s my grandma’s birthday. She lives in Germany, so I can’t see her tomorrow, but I always think of her when I bake.”
Jack’s little face lit up with excitement. “We should do something for her! Can we send her a cake?”
Susie laughed. “It might not survive the trip, sweetheart.”
“But we can do something special,” Y/n reassured him. “Maybe we can make a video or a drawing to send her?”
Jack clapped his hands. “Yes! And I can tell her I’m five now!”
Toto, who had been listening with an amused expression, set his coffee down and crossed his arms. “You know… I have to go to Stuttgart soon for Mercedes.” He glanced at Y/n. “Why don’t we all go? You haven’t been home in months.”
Y/n froze, her hands still holding the frosting bowl. “Really?” Her voice was soft, almost hesitant, as if she didn’t want to get too excited.
“Of course.” Toto’s expression softened. “It would be nice to meet your family, don’t you think?”
Jack gasped dramatically. “We can see where Y/n is from?”
Y/n looked at them all, her heart swelling. It had been too long since she’d seen her family, and the thought of bringing Jack, Susie, and even Toto into that part of her world was overwhelming in the best way possible.
“I’d love that,” she said, beaming. “And I know my grandma will, too.”
Susie wrapped an arm around Y/n’s waist, giving her a squeeze. “Then it’s settled. Family trip to Stuttgart.”
Toto, ever the serious planner, gave a decisive nod. “And now, let’s finish this cake before Jack combusts.”
Y/n laughed, turning back to her work, but not before she felt Toto’s hand linger just a little longer than necessary on the small of her back. Susie’s fingers brushed against her arm as she leaned in to steal a taste of the frosting.
Maybe this birthday was turning out sweeter than she expected.

Like a Father Headcannons: At König’s House
Platonic Yandere! König x GN!Reader Word count: 1806
Original Oneshot
AN: I love this idea so much. I’m losing my marbles over it. Anyway, sorry about the lack of actual German words. I speak the German from Germany at home, not German from Austria. They’re really different and I don’t want to mess it up. :,) Thank you very much to @foolphenomenon for beta reading for me!! Also, I’m sending plenty of virtual hugs to my readers. Y’all are so wonderful and I love you!!!!! <3
TW: Yandere behaviors, post kidnapping shenanigans, delusional loser man behavior, somewhat realism, reader in their 20’s, more of the author’s severe daddy issues, infantilization (I guess?)
♡♡♡
König does his very best to gentle parent like in the books he’s read. He knows you’re upset with him and that you won’t think of him as your Papa as quickly as he’d like but he stays patient with you. He hugs you when you get upset and doesn’t let you go until you’ve either calmed down or tired yourself out. He doesn’t like it when you yell at him or insult him but he sees you as a kid, his kid, and he knows that children say harsh things when they’re upset. The hugs serve a secondary purpose as a way to comfort himself and reassure himself that he’s being a good father when you’re mad at him.
Months after your “adoption day,” you had settled in relatively well for being kidnapped. You had realized pretty early on that König wasn’t going to hurt you. He just wanted a kid to call his own and you were unlucky enough to fit all of his criteria. It's definitely not as bad as it could be.

Months after your “adoption day,” you had settled in relatively well for being kidnapped. You had realized pretty early on that König wasn’t going to hurt you. He just wanted a kid to call his own and you were unlucky enough to fit all of his criteria. It's definitely not as bad as it could be.
He loves cooking for you. He hums in the kitchen while he makes dishes that he loved as a child for you. He wears an apron that his Oma made for him and lets you sit in the kitchen while he cooks. It looks a bit ridiculous wearing the apron but he likes it. He looks less threatening while wearing old lady floral patterns. He especially loves making Champignon Gebacken (baked mushrooms) for you. It reminds him of his childhood in the mountains when his mother would make it for him. He’ll even go and forage the mushrooms himself before work if he has time! He says that it makes it taste like it was made with more love than usual.
He also bakes an absurd amount. He makes bread, rolls, pies, cookies, cakes, and anything else he even suspects that you could have the potential of craving. He insists that it’s better for you (and it probably is) so he makes almost everything from scratch. That man makes insanely good Semmel (a type of roll) and he loves making sandwiches with it for you like his mother made for him. He packs you lunches to eat for while he's at work and puts them in a tiny mini fridge in your room.
He has to eventually leave on a mission and he’s worried sick about you the entire time. He has his other soldiers under his command that aren’t on missions stop by to feed you and make sure that you’re alright. He gets regular updates from them and he watches the video feed from the cameras in your room when he has time but it’s not enough. He knows that his men aren’t going to hurt you but he also knows that they’re not going to take as good of care of you as he does. It secretly makes him happy that he’s a better cook than his men though. It proves, in his mind, that he’s the perfect father for you. He wishes that he had brought you back to Austria with him so he could have his family members take care of you. They’re a lot like him and would understand the situation better than anyone else. His mother always wanted a grandchild to spoil rotten, after all!
Whenever he gets back from a mission, he always has plenty of treats and presents for you. The first thing he does is take his boots off and then he all but barrels into your room. He’s on the brink of tears when he finally gets to see his precious child again. He holds you in a hug for at least ten minutes before you start to squirm and he remembers what he brought back for you.
He’ll have the softest plushie that he could find for you, new clothes that he thought were cute, and more snacks and treats than you could carry. He also brought books, stickers, new games, and stationery for you and he wants to hear what you have to say about literally all of it. He sits you down with a pen and notebook and makes you tell him everything that you do and don’t like about his presents. He desperately wants to make sure that the next time he has to leave, he gets you things that you’ll like even more.
Eventually, he decides to homeschool you. Are you a grown adult that’s legally allowed to drink? Yes. Is he going to teach you cursive even if you already know how? Also yes. He wants you to learn the history of his country and he wants to be able to read you his favorite bedtime stories from when he was a boy in his native language. He also wants to be able to talk about the books that he likes. He’s not a very good teacher but he’s certainly enthusiastic. He even makes one of those sticker reward charts for every time you get an answer correct. He said that he’d give you a big reward for finishing the page.
He was true to his word. When you wrote enough pages of cursive and told him that the capital of Austria was Vienna about a dozen times, the page was filled up and it was time for your reward. He decided that it should be something educational but still enjoyable. He makes you promise to stay near him and takes you on a nice nature walk through the nearby forest. He loved being able to see how happy you were in the sunlight among the trees. It makes him want to bring you back to Austria even more.
When you inevitably try to sneak off, he sees it as a funny little game that you’re trying to play with him. He excitedly chases you, thrilled that you’re playing tag with him. It’s like you really are a little kid to him. He easily catches you in a bear hug and carries you over his shoulder as he walks back to the trail. He lets you down and pats your head, then insists on holding your hand for the rest of the walk so you can’t run off. He’s incredibly pleased with the three hours that you both spent walking around. It wasn’t actually that long of a path but König insisted on telling you all about every single species on the path and all but waterboarded you every twenty minutes while trying to get you to drink water so you wouldn’t get dehydrated.
The story that he reads to you that night is Hansel and Gretal. He really wanted to make sure that you knew that running off into the woods wasn’t safe. He sternly warns you that a witch is going to catch and cook you alive if you run off in the woods before kissing your forehead and turning the light out like usual as he leaves. He locks the door behind him and goes to his room to get ready for bed himself.
That night, he couldn't sleep. He was so worried that you’d have nightmares after he said that he had to go check on you. He creeps into your room and stares at you while you sleep peacefully, terrified that you would have a nightmare after what he said. You didn’t, mostly because you’re a grown adult that doesn’t freak out over fairy tales. You woke up to him staring at you and screamed. He took that as a confirmation that you had a nightmare and vowed to never try to scare you with a story again as he all but smothered you in a hug.
He bumped into you one time and knocked you over. He freaked out so badly that you were worried that he was going to faint and that you wouldn't get dinner if he was unconscious. He made you wear clothes made out of puffy material for a week after that, just in case he knocked you over again. He sees you as incredibly delicate, regardless of whether or not it's true, and hates the idea of you getting hurt.
The first time you call him Papa, he cries. He just sits there and hugs you and cries his eyes out. You don't quite understand what's going on and awkwardly pat him on the back. He’s incredibly proud and lets you have more outside time after that.
Whenever you call him Papa, he completely folds and gives you almost whatever you're asking for. He’ll buy or make you whatever you want as long as you acknowledge him as your new father.
König was constantly babying you and trying to make sure that you know how much he loves and cares about you. He loves turning on movies for you and watching you watch them. It's a bit creepy, to be entirely honest.
Speaking of your media consumption, he hesitates to let you watch or read anything that he deems as inappropriate. He thinks that you've seen far too much violence in your life and he doesn't like the idea of you being exposed to any more. He sometimes even skips over violent parts in the fairy tales that he reads to you at night, especially after thinking that you would have a nightmare after he talked about the witch in Hansel and Gretal getting you. He doesn't let you anywhere even remotely near the internet either. You have a lot of books about things like butterflies because he worries about what would happen if you read about anything “scary” while he was at work.
Surprisingly, he doesn't get overly concerned when you try to escape your room or the house on the occasions that he lets you follow him around. He thinks that you're just curious and that you need more things to do. He thinks you're very clever and he's proud of that. He ends up giving you puzzles to do instead to keep your mind and hands occupied. It doesn’t work and you keep trying to escape but he’s just so happy that you’re being significantly less cautious around him.
One time, you hid under your bed and fell asleep there. When he got home, he completely freaked out. It took him a good long while to find you because you weren't responding to him. He cried again when he found you and hugged you on the couch for a solid hour. You were super out of it, didn't understand why he was so upset, and fell back asleep while he held you. König thought it was very cute once he calmed down.
König is basically a broody mother hen in the body of a giant, terrifying man. Overall, he'd be a great parent if he wasn't severely mentally disturbed.

HOW MUCH OF AN ELVIS FAN ARE YOU?
So, I was watching an interview with Bill Belew (Elvis' clothing designer) and he mentioned one time a lady took her panties off and throw it up towards the stage Elvis was performing in Vegas. This is no novelty for me, for all of us I believe, but it always gets me like: 🫨!!! That got me wondering what would you do to show your appreciation to Elvis Presley?

POLL TIME, FAM! Let's work only with harmless options. I want real answers from the fandom. Just out of fun. ♥
If Elvis was alive and you had the chance to impress him (at least hoped to), what kind of Elvis fan would you be?
THINK AS IF YOU'RE ABOUT TO DO THAT THING YOU'RE GONNA SELECT BELOW --- PLEASE, DON'T ANSWER IT UNREALISTICALLY, UNCHARACTERISTIC TO YOUR REAL PERSONALITY.

my hot take is that germany is one of the most unique characters, and I’d argue he’s really well-written and nuanced aswell. Like, there’s not really any other character like him (even if the fandom mischaracterizes him so much that it’s hard to tell)
like, he has a short temper and can be angry. but it genuinely comes from a place of care. he’s reserved and a bit awkward, but unlike japan he truely longs for companionship and involvement. he’s stern and cold, but has SO much character in him.
he just wants to be happy and bake cakes and take vacations in italy, but like his whole life he’s been doing nothing but fighting for causes he dosen’t believe in. he can NOT catch a break, but throughout the series it’s used as more of comedy than anything so people kinda miss the nuance of it.
mentally sending him 90000 pet dogs. he’s earned it
(sorry that none of this is well-written or thought out at all i’m really tired just really love this character. also i think that people should maybe stop mischaracterizing him pls)

Surprise! Another couple thing
Natasha and Pepper are the couple that would lounge against their bed with some cake and ice cream. They'd watch a action movie or a rom com.
Pepper and Natasha are the couple that would dress to nines for big events but on days off. Pepper is in sweats, hair up messily and bunny slippers. Natasha is in a big onesie with fox slippers and a sleep mask.
Pepper cooks between the both of them but Natasha can scrounge up really good desert food.
When Natasha and Pepper are together, things are smooth. They are a power couple in a different way.
Natasha knows when pepper is stress by how much she tugs at her hair or start rubbing her neck. Pepper knows when Natasha is stress because she will paced none stop or mumble about something on her mind.
Pepper knowing Natasha might out live her doesn't put a strain but she knows it worries Natasha. Natasha fears she might leave Pepper far to early.
Pepper knows being an extraordinary assassin is dangerous, so she insists on getting further training. Natasha tried but she succumb to being pinned by Pepper. Pepper gets trained by Bucky.
Natasha will never admit (Tony would tease her forever), but seeing Pepper taking off the helmet of rescue will be her Apollo, Michaelangelo, a damn pisacco. Especially now she understands Bucky stares on Tony for the same reason.
Pepper sleeps in on her days off. Natasha has an internal clock set for 5 am on the dot. Pepper will get up with her on days she has to work. Natasha tends to read till Pepper wakes up on days off.
Natasha tries not to worry Pepper when she is way. When she is able, she sends gifs to her hot pot. Pepper loves it.
Pepper calls Natasha, her little widow, her soldier, milady, sugar (Natasha melts at that one). Natasha only has a few small nicknames, Hot Pots (mostly private), love (in Russian possibly), Honey (Potts), Boss, and simply star shimmer (Pepper freckles). When Natasha feeling petty because bucky and Steve won't shut it, Her Iron Woman, is one she uses.
Pepper helped three times. Once because Natasha asked. Another to protect Tony and Rhodey. And last to protect Natasha. Natasha watched as the blue armor glowed hot that memorable night.
Natasha was courted by Pepper. Pepper said I love you first. Natasha responded with a date that made them both blush.
Both aren't sure they even want kids. Pepper and Natasha aren't against it if a cloning incident happens but it's not on their radars right now.
Pepper was told that Natasha might be 40 years older than she is. Pepper finds it attractive.
Natasha has taught Pepper several weapons just in case. Pepper taught Natasha some tips and tricks for blending in better in a corporate environment.
Pepper and Natasha are the couple that would have a snake and Doberman as a pet. Pepper is the Doberman and Natasha is the snake.
Natasha invited her little hodge podge family once (Never again!). Pepper invites Tony, Rhodey, and Happy. She is not on speaking terms with her sister.
Natasha and Pepper are the couple that would hold each other's pinkies.
They elope, at Niagara falls. They honeymoon in Germany, some of Peppers family is from there (headcanon).
Their first kid was indeed a cloning issue (Morgan, her non blooded related cousin was also a cloning issue)
Natasha found out one night, pepper glows a tinge orange on her cheeks, fingers, and around her chest due to the left traces of extremis. Pepper found out that Natasha can lift close to 200 pounds (with a small amount of strain)
They work out together.
So far thats all I got for now! I might do thor and Bruce next or strange and loki

Annual quick song reviews:
Overall opinion: i would not call this year bad, but i will call it mid. but hey, at least there is one(1) song i'll listen to after the contest, unlike last year.
Albania I... I don't like the spoken word part. It's still my second this year, but that spoken word part prevents me from loving Zjerm. Anyway, this SCREAMS "quirky fandom's darling that people call a shoe-in for the top-10 but then it flops miserably".
Armenia Obligatory "Imagine Dragons-ass song" of the year. Idk, I think it's kinda fun.
Australia If we can't get Tom Cardy at Eurovision this guy will do.
Austria Impressive on the first listen but did not leave an impact in the long run.
Azerbaijan Sounds like a song from an ad but in a good way.
Belgium Sir, could you please not yell at me? Between the flashing lights and the shouty vocals Strobe Lights is just too overstimulating for me.
Croatia We could've had Disco Lizard here if HRT had taste. Anyway, Poison Cake is tryhard and cringe. It wants to be edgy but no one over the age of 11 will think it's cool. The bridge is neat though.
Cyprus Imagine writing a fucking ARG-ass riddle of a song only for another competitor to have the same name as the answer to said riddle. Speaking of.
Czechia And the award for the least necessary dance break goes tooooooo
Denmark Would've been a top-10 entry in, like, 2015.
Estonia Yes, it's underwhelming. Yes, Tommy has the same obnoxious vibe as Joost (and even more punchable face!). Yes, the vocals suck. But. This is just stupid enough for me to be amused. I would've preferred a different entry from a different artist but I'm not even close to actively disliking Espresso Machiatto (yet).
Finland God, Erika is such a joy to watch on stage.
France Good overall, but that child voice at the very end is one of the worst moments of any song this year.
Georgia Why can't all patriotic propaganda songs be as fun as I Love Belarus?
Germany Oh wow, Germany is sending something good, a novel concept.
Greece Welcome back, Yianna Terzi!
Iceland It's alright.
Ireland The worst song Aqua has never written.
Israel Somehow even more boring than last year.
Italy Sounds like a song from some old obscure cartoon.
Latvia The harmonizing parts scratch my brain in the wrong way.
Lithuania Yup, here's my favorite. Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, etc, etc. Tavos do get repetitive in the live performance and the staging needs some improvement, but goddamnit IT'S. SO. FUCKING. GOOD.
Luxembourg They wanted to recreate Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son but accidentally made another Rockfeller Street. Doesn't work nearly as well as a nightcore remix, unfortunately.
Malta Okay, I admit, I like it a lot. It's still very enjoyable even after the main hook got censored.
Montenegro I've never been a fan of Balkan ballads and Dobrodošli isn't convincing me to change my mind.
Netherlands The most competent male bop this year. I still don't care about it.
Norway This song does not warrant a cool chainmail outfit.
Poland Guilty pleasure of the year. There is a lot to love about Gaja unironically but there are so many disaster-bop things about it that just enhance the experience. The fact that it's such a blatant self-copy, the random hanging from the ceiling bit, the violin guy who starts scatting all of a sudden, the gym routine-ass choreo. It's so fucking fun, I love it.
Portugal This is a vibe and y'all are just mean.
San Marino San Marino is never beating the Agent of Chaos allegations and I love it for them.
Serbia The worse Balkan ballad this year.
Slovenia From the man famous for his parodies and political satire songs. Get ready for... an uncomfortably earnest ballad about him nearly losing his wife to cancer. Oof. Look, the song might be boring and clunky but I can't really hate on Klemen for putting it out there.
Spain I was a bit of a Melody apologist after the Benidorm fest, but then the revamp dropped. The revamp feels like the audio version of the "Polish editing": just throw every effect available at it and hope for the best.
Sweden Someone has pointed out that the chorus sounds like Blanka's Solo and I'll never be able to hear Bara Bada Bastu again without thinking about it.
Switzerland Warm hug of a song, even if it's a bit flat.
Ukraine One of my favorite entries Ukraine has ever sent and I will defend Ziferblat till the end of time.
United Kingdom When I first heard the leaked snippet, I thought that the "what 😳 the 👀 hell 😈 just 🙈 HAPPEEEEENED" bit was the song opening and got kinda interested. Then it turned out to be the chorus and oh god this song flows so badly. It's just constant start and stop with no satisfying peaks.
#esc#eurovision#could've posted it a month ago but there were like three or four entries i couldn't find anything to say about

Hiiii stranger!!! I'm back with updates!!
Lets start with some happy stuff: the trip I told you about was really fun and we cut my hair!! Nothing crazy just shorter big still good. I don't like having too long hair and my hair was kinda driving me crazy so I'm really happy we cut it. Also I love my friends :) they're just great. And me and my sister baked cookies today. They were honestly mid but it was still fun to bake.oh and last week I baked a blueberry sour cream cake with my grandma's recipe but the sour cream layer didn't set so it had a pudding consistency but it was still really good and I brought it to a picnic and all my friends loved it. Also just because I need to say it again: I love my friends. I also made a lot of art with my sister today, I drew a cup of tea, a fish and I made two tiny vases out of air drying clay. oh and a tinee tiny duck. One of the vases is shaped like a bag and I love it.
Soo now the negativ stuff: I was 99 days clean and then. I just wasn't. The hardest part is hiding it from my friends and my mom because I'm going on a trip with her in a week and I'm super worried it isn't going to heal until then. My mental health is kind of getting worse at the moment but I really noticed how it improved when I was clean so I'll try my best to get the current 9 days to hopefully forever. Also my personal hygiene is really suffering currently. And I hate school. I have so much to do but just no motivation so it just piles up and I do stuff last minute and I just do it really bad and I'm just copying my friends stuff. And I also hate my phone. Especially social media. And I got friendzoned by my best friend. But that's okay I didn't really expect it to go different. Also I'm probably not agender I just thought that because I wasn't really feeling much emotions. I'm still not. I can't remember the last time I cried. And I'm fucking tired. What's also shit is that art club isn't really fun at the moment. I don't really like what we're doing. But maybe that's just cuz I don't have any motivation for anything at the moment. Also like last time I'm having body issues. Did I mention I hate school? Because i really do.
My friend is still alive so that's good. Or maybe he isn't, I haven't heard from him in two days. I don't know how I'd react to that. I'm mainly just feeling numb. I don't think my brain can really process death. That makes me feel like I don't really care about people and that kinda makes me feel like a bad person. But I know it's not really my fault.
Also yeah im from Germany no worries about guessing haha.
You don't have to answer, I'm just ranting and I wanted to tell you
And to end this with happy thoughts: I'm doing judo and I'm training the little kids every Friday and they are just so adorable because they are 4 to 6 years old and they are just too cute and altho they're loud it's always fun and I really like the other trainers.
~ Maya
Hey Maya! I'm so happy with the updates!
I'm glad you had a good time in your trip, and also that you're doing artistic things. It can help a lot with mental health! I hope your friends are doing alright as well. I'm sorry to hear you relapsed, but I know you'll probably be able to get clean again, as you could stay clean for almost 100 days (yay!!!!). Also, I understand that absolute hate for phones and school.I don't think there's much either of us can do about it, so I send you strenghth from here to keep going. I'd like to think your friend is still very much alive, and I don't think it'd make you a bad person to not care about others when your priority should be your own well-being until you are well enough to care about others. About hygene, I know it can be hard as fuck, but please, try, because it helps with your mental health. With training judo, pleaseee I think my hear is going to melt with those little kids! I hope you like it there and find your little judo family. By the way, I send you all my support so you can deal with the idiot politics in Germany ❤. Stay safe and take care!

Van Down By the River
It’s not down by the river, it’s in South LA. And technically it isn’t a van, it’s actually an SUV. An old one. One my partner was able to procure from Facebook Marketplace for $1,300 even though it could probably retail for a lot more except that it’s bad on gas (like all behemoths of its generation) and it has some electrical issues (also like all behemoths of its generation). But it’s the kind of vehicle that lets you stretch your legs out completely in the back. It’s almost bigger than some spaces I’ve lived in in the past: dens and back porches on punk houses, little storage areas, black boxes in the arts district of downtown Los Angeles. There’s no real “how did I get here” kind of moment because I’ve been here before. In a lot of ways I feel like I was built for things like this. It’s a default setting. Though usually it’s not an old luxury SUV built in my sophomore year of high school twenty-plus years ago, it’s a bicycle with a trailer attached, a hiking backpack with a camera and a computer tucked neatly in the middle far away from watchful eyes, it’s a Greyhound but or a youth hostel. I don’t come from money, or much of anything really, like many of the comfortable vagabonds you’ll meet out in the wild, “cosplaying poverty” as an old fiend once put it, I am actually poor. And I have been on and off the majority of my life. I grew up on Chicago in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s, my parents were old radicals, beatniks, the pre-or-proto hippies of their generation, my late mother was the same age I am now when she had me and my father was a year and a half younger. My mother was 4th generation South Side Irish, and my dad was the child of immigrants from Yugoslavia and Germany. They were star-crossed adversaries who locked lustful eyes from across the room at an AA meeting; stale coffee and cigarettes in hand, she was 8 years sober, and he was 2 years sober, she never drank again, and he drank until he was around 70. She decided to go back to school when I was 3, and didn’t graduate until I was 19. She opted to live the life of a professional student and never had a solid job, dying having accomplished a good bit in the world of academia, burned bridges and owed money to everyone in her personal life. She died penniless on government assistance, convinced her smoke-caked, dingy apartment was a secret goldmine of hoarded antique furniture that cost her now-late sister even more money to get hauled out. My father lives in public housing, back in Chicago was out of my life on-and-off from 7 on, and fully from the time I was 16-25. We have a distant friendship these days, I’ll hear from him a couple times a year, we will send each other art we working on, but there is little-to-no emotional depth to our relationship. He didn’t want to be there in the first place, my mother, his tormentor and reluctant partner, was a woman he met in an AA meeting in 1985 and got pregnant and together they hobbled together a little life as best they could for as long as they could stand. We moves 14 times before I was 9, and I am trying not to repeat the same pattern. That said, I’m currently living in a proverbial van, down by the proverbial river.
Rat Palace, the name of this blog here, I chose to begin on tumblr as a nod to my elder millennial self who never started one back in college, back when they were in their heyday.
Rat Palace is my fashion line, it’s currently sold at one store and about to be sold in a second. It is the name of my pop-up when I vend my art places, it is the name of the Burning Man camp my partner and I are perpetually starting. It started as my own pop-up, immersive art installation that I used to travel with several years ago, a project that explored intimacy and vulnerability between strangers and in an anonymous way, guided by my paintings of these psychedelic rats that represented different human concepts and psychoemotional spaces withing the human experience. My style is somewhere between pop-art surrealism and graphic novel style illustration. I take that style with me wherever I go, whatever my medium, and whatever my subject. It is a style I have refined my entire life, and the concepts I keep in my art and in my fashion line are also lifelong common-threads about resilience and the strength of the underdog and resistance against the establishment.
And that is why I use rats as representatives throughout and in most of my artwork, they represent the perpetual underdog, constantly facing extermination, seen as vermin and undesirable, and yet they are persistent, smarter and kinder and more clever than any of us. They represent the people, places and things that we overlook because society has decided that they are other, unworthy, and yet if you ever met a rat, you’d fall in love. We currently have two rats. Alaska and Rocky Balboa, and they are going to embark on this journey along with us in a few weeks; their doofy little faces watching our travels from the back of the van.
This is not a travel blog. And it’s not just a journal. It is both of those things and it is also a social critique, a take on the world and all of the passengers living in it, written currently, at this moment, on stolen WiFi in the McDonald’s parking lot at the strip mall on Slauson. Aka, my home office.
So goodbye for now, rats, love and revolution.

CYOA Chapter 43 Snippet!
Remus Lupin: Morning, sorry to bother you if you're busy.
Lily Evans: Oh hi :)
Remus Lupin: Hi. I'd meant to speak to you alone this morning while Bea was in the shower but I didn't seem to get an opportunity.
Lily Evans: Lol yeah, I think Saniya has adopted you as their breakfast time book-discussion companion.
Remus Lupin: Saniya reads a shocking amount of smut.
Lily Evans: Yeah, word to the wise, don't ever mention the word "milk" around them if you don't want them to go off into peals of hysterical laughter. What did you want to talk about?
Remus Lupin: It's about your trip to Paris.
Lily Evans: Oh?
Remus Lupin: I was thinking of arranging for a present to be left in the hotel room for Beatrice, given that we haven't been together for very long and she's told me she likes romantic surprises, but I also don't want to infringe upon your quality time together or be a looming presence, so I thought I'd check with you first to make sure you're comfortable with it. Please don't feel as if you're under any pressure to approve of the idea if you don't.
Lily Evans: Oh, but I do approve. Beatrice would LOVE that, and it's not too pushy, unless you were thinking of pairing your gift with a note that says "I'm watching you," which doesn't seem like your thing.
Remus Lupin: I was thinking more along the lines of "Enjoy your trip, see you when you get back."
Lily Evans: Then that sounds perfect. Do you know what you'll get her? Because I have an idea if you want it.
Remus Lupin: Listen mate, Sirius suggested crotchless underwear. From you I will always take an idea.
Lily Evans: Okay, so it's going to seem really basic and unimaginative, but send her a box of macarons from Ladurée. I'm sure we can arrange it with the hotel. Or if we can't, Euphemia will, and you can pay her back. Bea has a real fondness for vacationing with a sense of place at all times, which really sounds odd but it just means that when she's in Spain, for example, the first thing she'll order at any restaurant is a portion of croquetas de jamon, or if she's in Germany she'll order cake and drink beer instead of wine, and when she's in Paris she likes to snack on macarons. Plus, her favourite show when we were teenagers was Gossip Girl and macarons are a REAL Blair Waldorf thing, just don't ever ask her if she ships Blair and Chuck because she hates Chuck and thinks Blair was meant to be with Dan. And don't ever, ever, under ANY circumstances, suggest that the reveal of Gossip Girl's identity made sense because you will bear witness to a rage that she is otherwise incapable of.
Remus Lupin: I watched a fair bit of Gossip Girl back in the day, believe it or not.
Lily Evans: Lol did you?
Remus Lupin: Well, Sirius did, and he'd hog the remote when we hung around at James's house. Eventually we all became rather fascinated.

The Woods
[Below is a translated excerpt from a diary penned by one Gottlieb Schneider found in a ruined campsite in southwest Germany, dated to sometime in the early-to-mid 19th century]
November 17 I've made arrangements to head westward into the woods outside of town for a hunting expedition. For now is the season for fine deer and boars out in the forest, whose meat should keep well into the winter in the storehouse for Heidi and myself. I'll be taking with me my rifle, a few dogs, and some basic provisions that I expect to last me about a week. I will leave tomorrow before the sun awakes, such that I can reach the woods before nightfall. Yours, Gottlieb
November 18 I made quite good time today, making it to the edge of the woods just as the sun was setting into the trees. As dusk fell, a brisk chill welcomed me to the hunt ahead. I am grateful now that I remembered to bring my hat, for I am sure it will only get colder from here as I venture deeper into the woods. The hounds are already with great excitement, particularly the green ones. When I set up camp for the night, I took some time to review my rifle, ensuring its cleanliness and function for the hunt ahead. I broke off some hard cheese and some rye bread from one of my loaves as my dinner for the night. Yours, Gottlieb
November 19 Despite the sticks and stones on the forest floor, I awoke most refreshed today. However, it is already much colder today than I anticipated it to be. To warm my bones for the day ahead, I brewed a pot of coffee over the fire from the night before. The trees are thick here, making it difficult to find much in the way of available sight lines. I did, however, find scraps of cloth fixed to trees along my path. [Pictured below is a pencil illustration of a jagged scrap of red fabric that is frayed at the edges] A few hours into the afternoon, I was able to find a few does drinking water from a still and pristine pond. The sound of a brook hid my approach. Upon picking up the scent of my dogs from downwind, however, they fled deeper into the woods. This sighting gives me confidence in the swiftness and success of my hunt. Yours, Gottlieb
November 20 I had great difficulty sleeping last night. All night I heard creaking and moaning coming from the trees nearby, and insects bit relentlessly at me and my dogs. I took out a bit of cheese and sausage, tossing a few morsels for the hounds. Despite my weariness, I am eager to continue on the trail of those does that I encountered yesterday. Before me lies a clear corridor through the trees that stretches on for a few miles. There are no stumps or signs of destruction, but the trees themselves seem to have bowed away from the corridor. There are more bits of fabric here, scattered throughout the corridor and caked with mud. One of the does from yesterday has reappeared. She jumped out from behind the wall of bowing trees and devoured some of the fabric from the mud. The doe's emergence raised the hackles of my hounds until she went back into the woods. I spent the rest of today following some sets of hoofprints I came upon. A few hours after sending my dogs to follow the scent left within the tracks, they bayed to alert me to their location. I followed the sound and found my hounds barking at a buck standing atop a nearby hill, who all but refused to flee until I attempted to fire at it. Today caused great exhaustion and disappointment. I pray that tomorrow will be easier on me than today. Yours, Gottlieb
November 21 The air has grown even colder and more bitter, taking on a quality I would not expect for another two months. To breathe burns my nostrils and fogs my breath, though no snow has fallen. I heard in my dreams last night the sound of a great moaning and creaking on the wind, like that of a home dying of age. I knew not its source, but it gave my visions an eerie quality. I ventured to find some more water to fill my canteen this morning. When I reached the lake, its water that was without flaw just yesterday had fouled. Leaves that had fallen upon the water have now turned to primordial scum. The sound of a babbling brook has been drowned out by the buzzing of flies. I took no more water then, for I doubt even pouring it into my campfire could clean it. Still determined to find my kill, I set out into the woods once more. After a few hours, I came upon a small herd of does attended by that most impressive buck from yesterday. I stilled my breath, took my aim at the buck, and fired my rifle into his shoulder. As I went to the fallen buck, the nearby does made no motion to move. In fact, they watched me with great stillness and intent, heads and eyes following my every move in unison. They even watched me as I dug my knife into the buck to remove his viscera. I dragged the carcass back with me to camp, but even still those does watched me. I don't think I'll ever forget the way they watched me. The buck was quite easy to carve and prepare for smoking. I even fed some fresh venison to the hounds which they readily devoured. Yours, Gottlieb
November 22 My oldest dog has died in the night. I expected this to be his last year, but I had no expectation of a fate so gruesome. His hide was perfectly intact, with no sign of injury of any sort. It lay mere feet away from his bones that were cast aside in a hasty pile and cleaned of all debris. My other dogs can barely move without trembling. I looked for tracks around my campsite to see what manner of beast was capable of such an act, but all I found were splintered and gnarled bits of oak and more of that dreadful red cloth. I spend the rest of my day digging a grave and performing a service for my hound, may she rest in peace in these woods. As I make my preparations to sleep, I pray to the Lord that I may return home safely to Hilda. Yours, Gottlieb
November 23 The corridor of trees from several days prior has appeared near my campsite, though I remember its location being a few miles south and its length being substantially shorter. Even with one dog dead, I must continue my hunt. As I trudge through the black woods, I notice that the birds have gone quiet. If I listen closely, I can hear now a faint, hollow, rhythmic rattling against some sort of dry membrane. Shortly into my walk, I see that a doe lies before me, still and lifeless. Her skin is icy and tough. After making an incision, I understand that her meat is still viable. In short order, I drag the doe's carcass back to camp and prepare it for curing. It is of great providence that this doe has fallen, as my provisions are growing scarce. Ice is beginning to form around my knuckles and fingers. Though I feel that my vitality has gone from me, I must return home at once. Yours, Gottlieb
November 24 The rest of my dogs have forsaken me during the night. I suppose they were wise to do so, for none have any chance out here in the black woods, not anymore. How fitting is it then, that the Final Sunday should be still and silent as the dead? As I break camp and make swift retreat to Schramberg, I hear once more that damnable rattling. It courses harsh and sorrowful through frigid autumn air, sending a chill up my spine and unease through my bones. I must move quickly before the cold catches and devours my very soul. The trees in the direction of my egress creak and bow before my eyes, they bend softly and turn away from it. Its rattling - its breathing - is growing louder. I hear the distant sound of a hymn for the dead. The choir is all-encompassing, coming from all the directions of the black woods: the north of devastation, the south of hunger, the east of decay, and the east of terrible and inexorable Death. Scraps of red fabric faded with age shed from its teeth and flitter about and dance. Its song is deafening, a choir of the countless thousands that rot, forsaken deep in the black woods. May God be with
