Little moments that I love in Red White and Royal Blue. PART 2.

I love how passionate Alex is here about wanting to try and win in his home state. He really wanted this win so bad he wrote up a whole memo about it and nagged everyone to work on it.

I love that that ends up being the decider in the election. Alex worked so hard for it, he deserved a win ❤️

Here, Henry and Alex are meeting after a while and they can't stop giggling while undressing each other. This moment is so authentic and close to heart for me because this is how you are supposed to act when you see your partner after a while. You can tell how much Henry and Alex missed each other and how happy they are to be together again.

I want to mention Nicholas and Taylor here as well, how well they did in this scene, their smiles, their giggles look so genuine 😍

I love this one sooo 😩😍 here they are just hanging out with each other and learning little things about each other, Alex is so curious and Henry is absolutely himself and not his usual guarded self. It's such a cute moment in their relationship. The way Henry says yes swooniest is a word and then they stare at each other until they smile like idiots 🥺😩

In Texas when Henry sings and gestures towards Alex and look at the way Nora reacts lol we're all her

The way Alex spins his head here 🤣 I'm surprised he didn't feel dizzy after and Henry's reaction to it is so much what I would expect Nicholas to do 🥺

"So no Henry, infact, this is costing me everything" 😭😭😭 Taylor ate. Alex was exhausted here, both physically and emotionally and was trying so hard to understand Henry and his point but he couldn't figure out why they couldn't at least try. I just want to give him a hug and pet him and tell him everything will be alright 🤧

In the museum after starting the song, Alex smiles like the sunshine and puts Henry's hands on his neck. And even though Henry was in a somber mood he still smiles softly. Then he completely gives in to the mood, and dances with Alex. I love how Alex can pick up Henry's mood, he knows exactly what Henry needs.

OK this whole museum scene is just beautiful and I love it but that would be a whole nother post.

The "I love you, I will be as patient as you need" 🤧🤧🤧 This is what true love is about

The way Henry couldn't stand watching Alex leave and turned away before Alex was out of sight and the way Alex knows Henry is hurting and he stares at him walking away 🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧

This hug is EVERYTHING 😭 You can see how much Henry needed to be with Alex. Henry just crumbles on the stairs let's out this sigh, Alex holds him tightly and Henry rests his head on Alex's shoulder... it's all too perfect 🤧😩❤️ and it was a genius idea to shoot this from top, their heads make a yin and yang ☯️

Hi! Let's see what I can come up with..

LIGHTING/GRAPHICS MODS Easy to use/install, lighting mods can change the look of your game drastically with little effort! I use a few:

no-glo

no-blu

graphicsrules override

I use this camera mod too, much less drifty...

Softerhaze makes some bomb ass lighting mods too.. I just switched from twinkle toes to sunblind and I am in LOVE - gamechanger lemme tell you.. so pretty! LOOKIT!!

RESHADE I'm still using g-shade at the moment but after recent events, I'll probably end up switching back again when I can be arsed. The effects you can achieve with reshade presets are amazing tbh.. and it's real fun to mess around with and create your own! Tho lots of people have made awesome ones if that's a bit much for you. If your PC can't handle it all too well you can always just switch it off until it's time to take screenies as well.

COMPOSITION Kinda hard to explain but basically, composition is what's in your frame and how you line it all up. I'd recommend reading some photography guides to get the gist of the concept.. but honestly, the more you mess around the more you'll get the hang of it. I've always loved photography and sims screenies really aren't so different. If you use reshade there's even some templates for thirds/the golden ratio etc you can slap on top for practice. Personally I don't use 'em cos I prefer my own judgement (that sounds rlly obnoxious but we're rolling with it). I found a template to show you what I mean! (ngl I was stoked that the first screenie I thought of for being a good eg. almost perfectly fit into this golden ratio shit LOL) but let's keep in mind how long I scooted around to get a good shot of this.. pretty sure I deleted about 10 other failed shots of this but shhhh, it's trial and error!

ANGLES/FOCUS The way you take a shot and how you angle it can change the whole feel of the image. For example.. in this image I tilted down and bit and filled over two thirds of the shot with the man, he's a big character and quite an intimidating guy so I think it helps get the idea across without pointing it out (at least I think so but idk I could also be talking outta my ass)

Similarly in these two shots below.. the first with the guy on the left gives the feel that he's in control here. The "camera" is tilted above him slightly and he's all up in your face, making the woman look much smaller in comparison. BUT! If you flip around to the second image, tilt down a bit and switch the focus to her, it makes him look more insignificant and less in control. I hope this makes sense??

EDITING/PHOTOSHOP ACTIONS ETC Personally I don't use photoshop actions but there's plenty out there to do the work for you! I think Intramoon? maybe.. has made a few but idk, you guys feel free to jump in with any suggestions! You can also smooth, fix stuff, change the mood/lighting, all sorts.. my advice on this is patchy at best tbh cos I just faff around until I see what I like lmao.. which leads me on tooooooo...

FUCK AROUND AND FIND OUT Lol.. but seriously! I don't know what I'm doing. I've never taken any classes or read up on much, I always just jump in and see what happens. Fuck around with reshade, fuck around with camera mods, fuck around with composition/focus, fuck around with photoshop or gimp or w/e.. just mess about for a while and have fun! I promise you'll get better.

so i was talking with some friends and theorised that, since the cloudstriders started existing pretty quickly after neomuna was established, and neomuna was established pretty quickly following the collapse, one could theoretically figure out how long the collapse + dark ages + time until the events in lightfall has actually taken, given that cloudstrider lifespans are 10 (earth) years. the assumption being that the 10 year cloudstrider lifespan is in earth years and not neptune years (1 neptune year = 165 earth years).

so !! i did some maths (lemoncat emoji) and calculated the total number of cloudstrider memorials in the hall of heroes (including rohan's) to be 414.

i'm assuming that cloudstriders' lives overlap somewhat like this:

but, frankly, i'm too scared and stupid to calculate the math like this so i just decided to halve the total number of years every cloudstrider was active (putting each lifespan back to back instead of overlapping): 414x10 = 4140/2 = 2070

in conclusion, my guesstimate is the time period of neomuna's establishment until the release of lightfall lasted 2070 years. with the last city having existed for ~500 years, the time period of the collapse until the (rough) end of the dark age/start of the city age lasted ~1570 years.

Ok my questions:

For starting out posting and editing, do you keep a schedule for yourself to stay organized? Rn I’m finally posting on my simblr after 3 years but I find myself just constantly taking screenies instead of posting and organizing the story. It feels chaotic lol the only organizing I’ve done just for game play in general is shopping for CC every other day (it’s an addiction)

A question I wanted to ask for a while is, if you are commissioning someone for poses what are the average prices you pay (or better yet, what do you think a good price is to pay for pose commission)? Sometimes I have these perfect poses in my head and when I’ve searched for hours I normally just end up giving up.

Lastly, I noticed your post from yesterday said you had 25 photos loaded in photoshop. Do you have all the art board (or images) side by side to edit them consistently and simultaneously?

I'm chaotic and impulsive but I have a little bit of a routine. Follow me under the cut!

Okay, SO!! For the first question about posting and editing.... I usually have an idea for the next scene while working on the previous one. So when I go in-game for story updates, the idea is already there and I'm just setting up shots and making the scenes look good. I don't have a schedule other than my posting schedule, so when you mention last night, I was editing pics that I had taken earlier in the day or the day before. So my schedule is usually sitting in photoshop all night the day before I post.

For pose commissions, I've only done that twice. I've had real good luck over the years finding poses or animations for anything I've needed. I would say make an offer to donate to them if you know their shit is dope and move anywhere between $5 to $10 USD. For the poses I commissioned, they weren't released publically so that's extra special (tip them more!). Also keep in mind if you're asking for accessories to be used, how many sims are in the pose, etc. For pose searching, try to be as vague as you can. "ts4 cleaning poses" and then see what comes up is one example and don't shy away from animations! They work with pose player, most without WW and can make for some great screenshots.

I load up all the pictures in Photoshop plus whatever templates I'm using (like the texting one or the dust overlays), and edit in order of sequence. This is where all the dialogue happens so sometimes I edit out of order if I know the dialogue for one scene already and maybe not the others. I hope i'm making sense lol. I spend a lot of time on this part because the words might change given which picture I've decided on (some scenes I take multiple screenshots of and multiple angles and then decide later which one to use). I go pic by pic, doing editing and adding dialogue individually then saving them, closing them and moving on to the next one. Once I'm completely done then I flip through them a few times as if I were the reader to try and catch any typos, etc.

This got really long but let me know if that helps or if I can elaborate more!!

the insides not furnished at all, but i’m so proud of this i wanted to show it right away. the outside alone took me forever so i already. know the inside is gonna take forever. it’s mostly cc free with the exception of a few things.

i love it. also sunblind by @softerhaze literally changed my life. it’s so beautiful. all these screenies were taken with it and edited w/ my preset. even unedited they were gorgeous.

hey!! i actually don’t really do that much. i used to be so extra and add hair drawing and all that but i lost the energy for all that.

i’ll take you through my process ~

first i used gshade - my own personal preset that i’ve tweaked based off one by savvythatsimmer i believe. its very bright + warm and saturated which is nice for something like love island!

after my screenies are taken, i use photoshop. i go in and use smart sharpen, unsharpen mask & topaz clean. i also use the television love action set. (im at work rn so idk my exact topaz settings i can upload them later! they might be in my resources page too.)

after that i go through and add any text and i just use photoshop to create the text and text effects/boxes. i then flatten my image and save as a png. pretty simple!

PART TWO ((mostly) toxic lesbian drama edition)

val: used to be barbs guitarist. one day barb posts a statement to twitter - "We have unfortunately decided to part ways with our guitarist Val. The split is amicable and we wish her well in her future endeavours." val tweets "i asked her to use they/them for me :/" and leaves it up for a total of 7 seconds before deleting, but its too late bc people got screenies. riff reaches out and he+val start becoming friends again which they dont acknowledge publicly at all but the update accounts notice that he re-followed them. val admits that while barb claimed the two met while "slumming it in a crack den" barbs family owned said crack den and was roleplaying poverty while val was homeless and addicted to meth.

barb (part 2): barb is a nepotism baby whos daddy is richer than god. she and poppy went to the same prestigious rich person college. they met at a party hosted by poppys friend (barb crashed) and hooked up despite not knowing each other bc they were both really drunk. barb didnt want a serious relationship and instead of having a conversation with poppy about it like a normal person she climbed out of poppys window (she lives on the third floor). every time they ran into each other after that point barb claimed to be deaf (she is not) so poppy began learning sign language (barb does not know sign language). after a month poppy gave up and was really depressed about it for a bit but eventually moved on. years later barb finds out that poppy (now queen of the pop trolls AND a popstar) is dating a nonbinary lesbian (branch) and thats why barb is transphobic now. she has a weird psychosexual hateboner for the both of them and wants to be their third. she has a girlfriend but she isnt into her at ALL it just looked better for her image to have a girlfriend (whether the gf knows its for publicity or she is being taken advantage of in a loveless relationship is up to viewer interpretation).

carol: the last remaining member of barbs band (until she replaces them with people who are equally awful and wont walk out after gaining a backbone). she doesnt agree with anything barb says but she is very rarely sober and has no idea whats going on ever. she probably thinks vals gonna come back with milk.

jd (part 2): tries to sneak back onto twitter by pretending to be a 27 year old trollex stan and jd anti. they start suspecting it when he performatively hates on himself in the first person on accident and goes from 38 followers to 1937 in the span of several hours. ("autocorrect" "sure grandpa" "i am a 28 year old trollex stan from lonesome flats" "i thought you were 27" "i had a birthday"). REAL trollex stans realise hes a fake when they ask him to name all of trollexs albums and he answers by copy+pasting from wikipedia. they doxx him and thats both how they go from 60% to 95% sure its the real jd AND why he has to leave his giant celebrity mansion he lived in for 3 months and go back to rhonda (which he is completely okay with bc he loves her and only begrudgingly left his nomadic lifestyle in the first place) (she has a recording studio in her now).

Jd: previously a frequent twitter e-clown infamous for name searching and starting beef with people who insulted him. His fanbase thought it was hilarious in a "grandpa escaped the hospital" way. Eventually was forced to relinquish control of @/brojohndoryofficial to his pr manager (clay) after he responded to 14 y/o @/j0ndryballzweat.

Floyd (part 1): his sex tape (with a fan he didnt know was a fan but thats hardly relevant) gets leaked. For the first three days everyone's timeline was full of "do NOT share it around, dont even look for it, if someone sends it to you IGNORE it, this is a disgusting breach of privacy" until Floyd addresses it by tweeting "decided to put on a different kind of show for you guys" and all hell breaks loose. Every tweets hidden replies are full of screencaps and reuploads for a month. People edit the video so just before anything explicit happens it's replaced by a video game cutscene or meme, which Floyd retweets a lot of. His brothers ask him to stop (both for publicity and bc it makes them uncomfortable) so he starts posting thirst traps on insta. Clay yells at him so Floyd tweets "clay just asked when I'm gonna get a girlfriend :/" which brings us to-

Clay: homophobia allegations. Admittedly the least serious and would have blown over quickly if it weren't for him panic tweeting "I'm not homophobic! My girlfriend is a bi lesbian!" People were NOT happy. It takes him three days of retweeting 'helpful educational threads and carrds' on lesbianism written by 14 y/os for people to get off his back. Viva understands.

Bruce: stays off social media bc its the mind killer so he lets clay take care of @/brobruceofficial. This goes well until clay gets drunk and thinks he's on his private account but is actually on Bruce's public. When he wakes up (hungover) in the morning hes got Bruce banging on his door asking why TMZ is reporting on him cheating on his wife. Bruce tells him to clear things up but clay JUST got the lesbians off his back and can't afford to be back in the hotseat...

Branch and poppy: branch was annoyed by all the branch/poppy rpf fanfic (poppy likes them bc she thinks they're cute and funny. When brozone go on tour she reads the smutty ones) so he suggested to poppy that they stage a fake breakup. Poppy is initially against the idea until branch brings up how much fun itd be to sneak around like a couple of teenagers. Poppy scrapbooks the tabloids about their breakup. Clay and Bruce blame clays drunken tweets on branch so clay seems like the victim. Poppy acknowledges this on twitter in a way that very heavily implies they broke up bc branch was cheating on her with her own sister. Viva does not understand. This one doesn't have a resolution yet bc we moved onto:

Barb: previous lesbian icon turned reactionary transphobe. Riff stopped associating with her once she started getting really public with it and now she keeps tweeting stuff like "you-know-who left me just to work with misogynists. Really makes you think 🤔 " which he ignores.

Riff: while still working with barb he was approached to collab with creek (damage control for the... unsavoury things he said about rock trolls). The second the song released he tweeted "wow that guy was an asshole LOL" bc he didn't realise he wasn't supposed to do that. Cut contact with barb once her transphobia went from "mild, I can fix her" to "jesus fucking christ". Briefly worked with Floyd until his second controversy at which point riff tweeted "cmon, man" and turned off his phone. Riff hasn't done anything wrong and he deserves a lot better

Velvet: crafted the perfect expose thread on Floyd when she was in prison, including "pro life" "publicly sharing inappropriate sexual content" and "uses the toothpaste flag". Posts it the second she gets let out of prison and instantly becomes #1 on trending (alongside "floyd" "pro life" and "#HUGS4CLAY).

Floyd (part 2): tweets "why does it even matter that I'm pro life if I'm gay and don't 'believe' in 'voting'" before doing another line off his boyfriends torso. People bring his leaked nudes back up and start insulting his dick size and its the first time hes ever let a controversy bother him. His next tweet is "I am not ashamed of my body" and the top reply (creek pfp) is "you should be ❤". Clay is biting the skin off his own tongue.

Little moments that I love in Red White and Royal Blue. PART 1. Man this is gonna be a long ass post.

(I can't make gifs right now, wish I could gif these moments but for now screenshots will have to do)

The first one is at the Childrens hospital where Henry introduces Alex to the kids. Henry very sweetly says how his mum is out-ranked by Alex's mum. I think Alex is a bit surprised here (maybe a little shocked) at how easily Henry can say nice things about him specially after their seemingly endless rivalry.

Then in the hospital cupboard, after Alex confronts Henry he was saying that he is sorry about being cold to Alex earlier but he was in a bad place with his fathers passing and Palace not giving him any space. Alex looks up at him, his mind is probably starting to feel sorry for Henry for the first time and he is realizing how his hatred for Henry was based on a very dark time in Henry's life. His eyes are soft here, which a moment ago was big and angry.

(plus Taylor looks like a puppy here which I love 😍)

This is rather a sad moment for Henry. He is probably thinking how this is one of the very last moments he gets to spend with Alex (even though Alex had already invited him to the new years party) and how their next meetings will be shorter and probably not meaningful enough for them to ever become anything. He so far hadn't gotten Alex's attention, it's probably not going to happen later. Of course we all know that's not what ends up happening 😏

This here where Alex asks Henry if he was surprised by Alex in any way, and he just goes like this 🤣

He is probably thinking of all the things he loves about Alex before deciding to tease him a lil bit. Not to mention how adorable Nicholas looks here 🥺

After their bedroom adventures and Henry's romantic ass kiss (😍) Alex very visibly becomes very thoughtful and you can tell how he knows that it's gonna be sometime before he sees Henry again (he already misses him), and how his mind is racing trying to think of an event where they can meet again.. my poor poor baby 🤧

In Paris scene, I love how Alex comforts Henry by giving the softest little nudge on his forehead (their hairs touch).

This is a very small moment that is seen right after a closeup of Henry's face and right before Henry gives Alex the nod to go ahead. This moment is etched in my brain and it makes me wanna cry every time I watch it.

I love their little smiles here after the famous "I'm learning", they are both so in love already it's obscene 🤧 and their smiles are so reassuring and tender 🥺

In other words Nicholas and Taylor ate. It's a long take and the timing of their expressions and their delivery of each dialogue is just top notch 👌

When Alex is on the plane back from Paris, he looks very pensive. Then he let's out this big sigh and a small smile breaks out. We all know who he is thinking about. I love how Taylor portrayed all the emotions in Alex's heart here. He is tired but happy, and thoughtful at the same time. I think this is the first time Alex gave some serious thought to he and Henry's relationship. Before it was just hooking up in places and mostly about their physical needs for each other.

for the lil motivation question, i try and not force myself to take screenshots if i dont feel like it bc if i do, its gonna take me MULTIPLE HOURS like i pose 1 sim, leave my computer and just go lay in bed for no reason 💀 for example in literally my last post, i took the emi riding her horse photos in the span of liKE thirty minutes bc i didnt want to actually take them and i even had everyone posed!! so for the rest i just did other things like pose some sims in couple poses for no reason. AND then i was like ‘okay i had fun lemme go take these photos’, focus on gettin them done. i literally get 2 focused i didnt even notice i was done taking all screenies 🧍‍♀️

my edits are my fav sdfjlsdkfj i just go around asking WHAT SHOULD I DO ?!?!? HELLO?!?!?! my motivation is thru the roof. i have too many ideas 😔 i think editing screenies/edits is my fav part!! but posing sims no 😔  i always take too many photos i end up with 50 outtakes for no reason

Not sure if you speak Spanish but as a fellow spanish speaker i am quite ashamed of the audacity of that person who sent you the message...i cant help but wonder if maybe translating the reasons why reposting is bad in different languages could help decrease the amount of reposts granted it should be common sense but i guess ppl either just dont know or dont care...

Thanks for your message and support ^^ It was quite a bold move from them indeed haha but I am aware that their nationality has nothing to do with them being rude so you shouldn’t be ashamed at all!

I do not speak Spanish but I am French, and Italian was my 2nd language - I say “was” because I am more proficient in English now but don’t tell my grandma ( ˙▿˙ ). So I got the overall idea of the messages (still used 2 different translation websites to be sure I understood correctly though).

It’s a neat idea! And it would probably help spread the message a bit more. :)

That being said, I don’t think that excuses their behavior nor should it be the artist’s only responsability to educate people because:

Those posts surely already exist somewhere in the internet (you could probably confirm that there are at least forums explaining the subject in Spanish and other languages, if they bothered Googling it)

in my experience (at least) most people don’t want to be educated on the subject once they are caught red-handed

it’s literally written THRICE on the stolen artwork to NOT REPOST and I shouldn’t need to write an essay in the first place for them to respect my wishes and boundaries (kinda like how consent work).

Let’s take my most recent repost experience : the reposter, alongside stolen artwork, posts screenies, edits and analysis (in Spanish) of the otome game MLQC - a game that is only translated in English for “Western users”.

There is a fairly good amount of dialogs in this game, which means that the reposter, although they didn’t feel like answering in English to my DM, understands both the game AND my message. Still, they :

lied to me even tho I have SCREENSHOTS of my reposted artwork before it was taken down

blocked me and then changed their username + pfp after I sent them said screenshots asking them not to lie to my face + explaining in 3 sentences why it’s bad + asking them not to do it again.

And unfortunately, that’s not uncommon. When I DMed reposters, I used to accompany my message with a link to this very clear Twitter thread made by GraphicFighter on the subject, as a mean to help them understand me - because I believe that if people get educated on their mistakes, it lessens the chances of them repeating it. The reactions were either :

total silence

a “polite” apology and “promise” they’ll never do that again (but I am not sure they read the thread)

a rude answer, from a litany of bad faith arguments, to literal insults, or a lie.

I am sure there are people who changed (I hope so), but in my experience, people would rather close their eyes than own up to their mistakes, learn from it and apologize.

TL;DR : spreading the word in different languages should lessen the risks and we still need to help educate people on the subject BUT people should still respect “DO NOT REPOST” signs even if they don’t understand why + there will be reposters who still don’t want to educate themselves even tho it’s super easy to find infos on the subject nowadays.

Kyidyl Explains Bones - Part 4.1

(These are all under the KyidylBones tag.)

Sorry for the pause in this series....it’s difficult to produce these when I don’t have my meds and I ran out.  But I refilled them, so now we continue! 

Anyway, today we’re covering something that is, if possible, even more complex and thorny than sex determination: race determination.  

Ethical Statement: Race is not a biological reality.  Now, hear me out before you run away.  Race isn’t a biological reality, but that doesn’t make it *not real*.  Race absolutely is real and effects how society interacts with an individual.  But between these two statements, which gives you more information about a person: 

“I’m white.” 

“I’m white and I live in 21st century America.” 

The second, obviously.  Because skin color tells us virtually nothing about an individual.  Ethnicity - where they’re from, what social groups they might have interacted with, how society might have treated them, etc. - is a lot more valuable than knowing the color of their skin.  HOWEVER.  And this is a big however.  However, in a modern person’s understanding there is a lot of crossover between race and ethnicity.  And, in fact, as with sex, when a set of remains is being evaluated for identification we must at least attempt to identify the race because that’s how they’ll be categorized in the missing persons’ database.  And identifying race in archaeological remains helps us track human social interaction and migration because ethnicity doesn’t really survive intact outside of grave goods (and those may or may not be present.).  And, yes, if you’re wondering, DNA tests can confirm a lot of the data that we attempt to glean anatomically but for the most part we don’t have the money to do DNA tests on remains, or they don’t have anything surviving that has intact DNA (you can have a nearly complete set of remains and not have any DNA because damage to the outside surface of the bone and/or teeth causes damage to the DNA inside it and causes it to break down.). 

So since race isn’t a biological reality but it is a social reality, it’s helpful to attempt to determine the race of the individual in question.  And, obviously, that’s before you even take into account that people interbreed all the time.  So how can we begin to do this with any degree of accuracy, since the classifications are social and not biological? 

Short answer: we can’t, but we try anyway because of the reasons I mentioned above.  And there’s something that I should have added to the post about sexing a skeleton but I didn’t because I’m human and I make mistakes sometimes: we don’t ever refer to a set of remains as definitively X sex or definitively X race (well, we do when we’re with other scientists who have an understanding of what I’m about to say for brevity’s sake.), we say “this individual has _____ features consistent with or indicative ______ race/sex.” Sometimes the features are very stereotypical and we’re fairly certain that they definitely are X race or sex, but other times they’re not.  And the markers that we use are based on averages, so obviously within those averages there’s a huge amount of variation - that’s why we use so many different markers.  So like with any science, it’s good to remember that there’s always room for change and that it’s all theories.  

Also if you want to do some reading on it, you’ll see that these determinations are still hotly debated among anthropologists because we are well aware of how racist and shitty it all is and we hate that we have to engage in it but at the same time it’s important for the reasons I mentioned above, so we’re always trying to find new ways that are more accurate and less racist.  

Categories

Essentially, we have a list of anatomical features that tend to be similar in geographic regions and we go through these features and grade them according to which race category we think they most closely match.  There are three, sometimes four, categories: 

Caucasoid/White/European depending on what reference you’re using.  

Black/African (Outdated term: Negroid. We all hate it but it’s in the literature, especially older stuff, and if you do any reading you’ll run into it.)

Asian (Outdated term: mongoloid. Same as above.) - This includes Native Americans because their anatomy is so similar to Asians, especially eastern asians, that it’s well-nigh impossible to distinguish without a DNA test.  Mostly we know based on the context the remains are found in.  

Aboriginal - This is specifically for indigenous pacific groups, especially in Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand. In this lab we use the indigenous name.).  They have some interesting anatomical differences that are only found in that area of the world.  Obviously it’s not going to be as used in the rest of the world tho so it’s often not covered.  Plus their biggest differences are brow bone size and tooth size so while it’s different it’s not AS different as the other three categories.  

So as we go through the markers, we add them to these groups and then at the end average them out to see which one the remains most resemble.  

The Anatomy

There are a lot of markers of race on remains, and more are being studied all the time, so I’m going to cover the most common ones in the interest of length.  Also, pretty much all race markers are on the skull, so I’m not really going to get into the rest of the skeleton, even tho there ARE markers on the post-cranial (means exactly what you’d think: not skull.) skeleton.  And like with physics ignoring friction for the sake of illustration, we’re going to ignore cultural changes to the bones ala the slavic squat and pathologies.  We’re gonna start in on the bone pics in a hot second, so time for a cut.  

I went back and forth on the most concise, easy to understand way of doing this and it took me a bit to figure it out, but I think it’s going to be like this: I’m going to tell you what we look for generally, and then give specific examples in each category as we go through race by race.  So, there are a lot of things that can indicate race in a skeleton, but I’m only going to cover the easiest to digest.  Understand though that there’s a lot of smaller indiciations.  Like with sex, these are graded on a scale in relationship to how stereotypical they are of a given feature.  And, unlike with sex, it’s much easier for the opinion and biases of the examiner to alter the results because a lot of these comes down to “what shape is this thing and which shape is it closest to��.  This is, of course, subjective.  The ones I’m going to cover are: 

Eye orbit shape and sharpness. 

Prognathism (the amount that the “muzzle” area of the face sticks out.  Eg., how flat is or isn’t a face?)

Nasal shape

Nasal sill (this is the bit that sticks out at the bottom of your septum, and the “floor” of your nose/top of your maxilla in your nose.

Nasal bridge

Unique racial features.  

First, I’m gonna use some screenies from my ipad to be very specific about the area of the skull I’m talking about here.  These all were taken by me in essential skeleton and edited.  

Eye orbit shape: 

I think this one is one of the more accessible things to understand without a skull in your hand.  If you think of the way that people look IRL, there are physical features that tend to be more common in various populations, and that translates to the skull (and in case you’re wondering: no, white is not treated as the baseline here, but you’ll see.).  Here it’s the shape of the eye socket.  

Eye socket sharpness: 

When you hold a skull in your hand, if you run your finger over the part of the eye socket between the lines (really, the whole edge, but the effect is more pronounced at the bottom and on the lateral edges), it’s sharper on some races than on others.  Again - this is a skeletal marker of physical features that you can see in a living person.  I’m not going to point this out in the example skulls because you won’t be able to see or feel it in the images, but it’s a pretty easy to understand way of adding another racial marker to your tools.  

Prognathism: 

So the easiest way to understand this is twofold.  First, how far does the chin stick out in relationship to the top of the nose? This shows how far the face protruded in life.  Here you can see the angle is 88 (although honestly i’ve never known anyone to measure this - I’m using it to illustrate the point.), and I only know that because the ruler tool I used to draw the lines told me so, lol.  The easiest way to see this is to look at the curve of the profile like I’ve illustrated with the green line.  

Nasal Shape: 

The shape of the nasal opening varies between racial groups.  We look at the height and width from the places I’ve illustrated above.  Sometimes we also look at the shape of the sort of upside down heart area I’ve outlined, because human variation means that you’ve gotta have a couple of ways of doing things.  

The Nasal Sill gets two images cause it has two parts: 

The top one has a landmark called the anterior nasal spine highlighted (honestly I think of it like the pointy nose thing).  The degree to which it sticks out  varies by race.  It is part of the maxilla, and together with the two portions of the maxilla that i’ve circled forms the nasal sill.  A lot of textbooks refer to the nasal sill as having a “height”.  I found this confusing and I found the pictures confusing too, so I’m gonna try a different tactic with you guys.  So first of all, you can feel some of these bones in your face.  Pinch the bottom of your septum where it meets your upper lip and wiggle it.  Feel how there’s a harder bit under the cartilage? That’s the pointy nose thing...er, nasal spine.  Now - and this is a little gross but it’s ok I won’t tell anyone - if you feel down into the bottom of your nasal passages you can feel where this blends into your maxilla.  The cartilage rises up and that forms your nasal passage.  On a dead person, that cartilage isn’t there.  So the hard bone that you feel there is all we have.  Well, the angle at which that slopes deeper into the nasal passage varies by race (because nose shape varies by race).  In some individuals, the anterior edge of that opening is sharp and lifted, forming a sort of dip in the area I’ve circled above.  This is the nasal gutter.  And if you google that, you will be hard-pressed to find anything that explains it with any clarity, especially because you don’t have a skull in your hand.  But it’s one of those things that’s useful to know because it can be really distinct and easy to see the differences in.  

The Nasal Bridge: 

Because the shape of the nose changes the bones all around it, another indicator is what I’ve shown here.  The angle of the curve of that red line, and the length of the blue line.  That’s basically the length of the nasal bones.  You can also tell with the shape of them, and the shape of the place where they connect to the frontal (the suture that connects them to the brow bone.), but I’m not going to cover that.  We have enough nose things.  

I’m going to cover unique features when I get into the examples of different races.  You might be thinking that this is a lot of attention paid to the eyes and nose, and you’d be right, because although there are distinct differences in mouth shape and size they don’t translate to the bone.  And, fun fact, the most accurate indicator of race is actually teeth - but we’ll cover that in the entry on teeth.  But for now, I’m going to stop here and split that into its own post because this one is long and picture-heavy.  So come back in a couple hours after I’ve finished and posted that one.
