the saggital crest is a bony structure on the top and back of the skull of some carnivorous mammals, where the temporalis muscle (one of the main muscles responsible for chewing) attaches to the sides of the skull.
generally the larger the crest is, the larger the mastication muscle of the animal to which it belongs.
the illustration above is the skull of a fisher - a member of the mustelid family, along with weasels, otters, wolverines etc.
photo credit for the second pic is attributed to Douglas H. Domedion via Wikipedia

This is why 90% of media that involves archery gets it wrong.
Pick up a glass or bottle with one hand and hold it out in front of you. Which way does the inside of your elbow face?
For most people without archery training, it'll point up. If you shoot a bow like that, the string will hit your arm and make your shot less accurate. Your shoulder will also drop, making your posture wonky and wrecking your stance.
Now hold the same hand out, palm down. The inside of your elbow should point sideways. That's the arm position you need to shoot a bow, but not the hand position. So to properly shoot a bow, you need to rotate just your hand, not your elbow, to hold it. Actors paid to play archers almost never do that on screen.
In practice, once you've done it a few hundred times, you stop doing the hand-motion setup, to the point where every time I hold up anything with my right hand (shovels, brooms, glasses of water) I usually turn my elbow to the proper archery angle.
Arms are weird.

Just watched the httyd live action trailer and there are so many things I could complain about (just the fact that it exists being one of them) but like
They changed the structure of Toothless' hind legs??? In the original his hind legs function the way human legs do, his heel is flat in the ground and the bend of his leg is his knee, making him a plantigrade. But in the live action the bend of his leg is in his ankle?? They made him a digitigrade??? Why??? For what purpose???
#such a fucking innocuous and petty thing to complain about#but as an anatomy nerd this deeply agitates me#it makes more sense for him to be a plantigrade anyway???#skeletal structure wise#most lizards are plantigrades irl#so are most of the quadrupedal dragons in httyd???#so why change it#god its all im gonna be looking at for the duration of time Toothless is on screen in the live action#his fucked up legs that in all honesty probably make him less aerodynamic#cuz he cant fully tuck them against his body#grgrgr#httyd#how to train your dragon#hiccup#toothless#toothless httyd#httyd toothless#how to train your dragon live action#httyd live action#live action httyd#live action#salt#im not joking the first time i watched the trailer this was the thing that i fucking noticed#the structure of a fictional flying lizard's hind legs#kill me

Please Reset Your Save File :)
idk what came over me but here take this forgettable au wingdings undertale ARG ass image
speaking of being a mystery image with secrets to be unlocked, i’m gonna refrain from yapping. do the sleuthing yourself I believe in you
ok…. fine….I cant resist…. BUT DO THE TRANSLATING YOURSELF IM NOT DOING EVERYTHING FOR YOU
Ill start by explaining my proccess cause it was quite eventful!
The jumping off a cliff towards something was inspired off of this tiktok :D
Thought it worked GREAT for a character who was so dead-set on his goal he destroyed himself in the process of achieving it… And thats all I had in mind, Wingdings reaching twords his goal (a star/the player) and the rest I just went along with as I drew
I didn’t intend on the background being black, was just a placeholder, so once I finished the line art I fiddled with the color. thought some sort of “blue screen of death” would go well with the themes of what happens to him since he is IN a game. so the universe literally restarts (resets :3) itself to get rid of a glitch (him)
My theory currently is that his goal was to become some sort of player/gain the ability to reset, and once he did that, the game saw him as an error/glitch, so got rid of that- bro IS Turbo from wreck it ralph
After that whole idea- I was looking at some references to replicate the text and it made me go “OOOHOOO” when I saw the QR code like “oooo I could make my own and have some fun with that…” and so I did- and decided to link my original idea for that!
Reference:
I had fun making some differences in the wording to fit the situation
In the end, 2 silly illustrations that are fun to flicker between!
talking about the actual drawing though:
The cliff Dings is running off of has echo flowers because I SWEAR those are important. trust.
Him not wearing gloves is meant to depict how little he cares for his own safety in his last days. I did the same thing in my IM SANE amv!
The “star” having an eye is meant to show how its both the player, and seeing the stars/surface that Wingdings is reaching for.
The wingdings font covering Dings’ face/eye socket is meant to symbolize that perhaps he feels defined by his inability to communicate like other people naturally can.
“Ths Stars, They Cry Out Your Name” is my favorite thing in this… from Wingdings’ perspective, the only thing that matters, that understands him, that TRULY values him…is THE STARS. its like this goal that he has that will make him feel valued. Getting to the surface = being “worth it” But truly, the stars are the PEOPLE that care about him. Asgore, Alphys, Sans, people that are genuinely concerned over his obviously deteriorating mental health- they CRY out his name, not “call” like I had originally planned.
“66%” hehehehhe funy gaster numbr
ok and last thing- Im gonna cry remembering this dialogue from the official Clock App
its so important for this AU, PLEASE
#undertale#forgettable au#undertale au#forgettable au fanart#undertale fanart#wingdings is the bane of my existence#wingdings i hate you#I spent way too much time deciding what I should put on that qr code#thought of making a google slide presentation from wingdings’ perspective#but that wouldve been way too much work#and probably contradict things that will be revealed later…#IT WOULDA BEEN COOL#But I valued the ‘they cry our your name’ too much not to include it SOMEWHERE#sooo#ALSO IM GETTING SO MUCH BETTER AT DRAWING SKELETO ANATOMY???#maybe having an undertale hyperfixation wont have so many lasting consequences on my art after all#give me lots of opportunities to improve my skeletal structure!

With great power comes with great need to make skin creatures
HELL YEAHH
#mushyrt#asks#svsss#tw: body horror#y’know unironically it’s been such a fun way to practice animal anatomy#because they specifically have to be ‘skin’ creatures#I’m sometimes forced to take a deep dive into these animals#since photos of these species being featherless or hairless just don’t exist#of some of these*#so I have to extrapolate based off of skeletal structures and other biological features#Octobing#sv creature

Nerd-to-nerd communication
Something super pointless and self-indulgent I've had on the backburner for a while. I love trying to make the pieces they gave us fit together!
Al-AN and Robin would absolutely bond over learning about each other's biology. I could talk about this forever but I'll get into all of the headcanons I have for these two in another post eventually
Below the cut is another version with some extra bits and pieces and the transcription
Transcript :
Architect Anatomy A. Architect "Brain" - Doesn't "store" information so much as allow for easy communication with the network B. Brainstem - connects the information received to the central nervous/circulatory system C. "Heart" - Circulatory system pumps the bioluminescent fluid to other organ systems and surface veins. Each node connects to a vast vasculature network D. "Kidneys" - Organs that filter the bioluminescent "blood" and other bodily fluids, absorbing and distributing collected material E. Nerve Center - Receives raw sensory data and filters it. Filtering can be unconscious or intentional
F. "Respiratory" Tract - Intakes gases or liquids and filters out material for use. Disposes of waste on exhale. Provides cooling to internal systems
The respiratory tract functions less like a set of lungs and more akin to a computer's cooling system, with the ability to absorb material from the environment to use in other parts of the body. It also would likely help the architect's body analyze the environment it is currently exposed to on a molecular level. It is also truly unidirectional, with the intake vents near the "collarbone" and the exhaust vents on both sides of the abdomen
The architect organ cache in-game felt like it was definitely not a complete model of the internal organs, so I wanted to come up with something to fill some more space. I also just really liked the idea of Al-An being capable of something similar to breathing, without having a respiratory system in the traditional sense. Feel free to use any of this in your own headcanons if you would like :)
BONUS - a gif of all the layers!
#EDIT - UPDATE IN THE REBLOGS#The skeletal structure of the architects cause me so much anguish#Ily al-an but your HIPS don't have JOINTS#This was so fun#I mention this in the keep reading but feel free to use this anatomy speculation stuff in your own work!#I want to get into more of my headcanons for how his body works but I might do that through writing. Ill link my ao3 if I do lol#subnautica below zero#subnautica#sbz#al an subnautica#al an#robin ayou#subnautica below 0#al-an#spec bio#<< technically I guess#Do you think he sounds like an overheating pc when he's embarrassed#SMALL EDIT : HELLO?? I didnt realise Aci had made a video analyzing al-an's body and AUGH I WISH I HAD SEEN IT!!#He brings up some really good points and ideas abt his physiologyyyyy

The carapace of a turtle’s shell is an extremely intricate structure.
I found this a musk turtle carapace in a creek, remnants of this species are legal for me to collect where I live.
Nature had done most of the cleaning for me, but when I finished the job I had to disarticulate parts of it. So I spent this afternoon glueing the pieces of the shell back together! Some classic Elmer’s glue does the job. It’s a 3d puzzle.
Something I didn’t know before this is that the costal (middle, rib) plates have a triangle shape that fits perfectly into a slot on the marginal plates! I’ve outlined this a little bit in my photo from below!
The neural (spine) plates don’t have a slot like this but all of the plates still fit together perfectly at the seams. It’s a little tricky to put them back together, but with patience I managed to do it!
I’m not sure why that triangle slot is there, maybe it helps strengthen the carapace.
Here’s the outside and inside put together! The gaps you can see are from me not being an expert at this rather than the shell not being a perfect fit
Notice how the plates themselves are shaped differently from the keratinous scutes, but how you can see a little divot where the scute will go! I don’t have all the scutes and unfortunately some of the spaces where I wasn’t able to get the shell together all the way are visible. But here’s a comparison with and without the scutes that I had.
The scutes end before reaching the marginal plates, which have their own scutes. While the marginal scutes don’t overlap with the non-marginal plates, the scutes do cover the seams in the bone (rather than having the scutes start and end with the seams). Maybe this is for additional strength and stability of the shell.
Here’s my final product! This was a fun challenge. Keep your eyes peeled when you’re outside, that weird shape in the water just might be a turtle (or remnant of one).
Please be mindful of your health, safety, and local laws when collecting skeletons and the like from nature. Stay curious!
