Chaos vs. Order in the world of HSR: an incoherent rambling.

Spoilers for the Unknowable Domain.

Speaking of Aventurine and Dr. Ratio, if you asked me before which side of the dichotomy of Order and Chaos they represent, I wouldn't hesitate. Of course a reasonable and methodical scientist represents Order, and an unpredictable gambler represents Chaos (Ratio even called him "a system of chaos devoid of logic"). Until I saw this.

It got me thinking. Yes, gambling is all about chance. Unless you are supernaturally lucky and you always know that the coin will land to your benefit, following the predetermioned Order.

Compare Aventurine's "No reason to choose otherwise, and no other choice" (everthing's predetermined; you can't change it; don't even try) to Ratio's "Chose your own path" (I think this phrase might be more important for Ratio as a character than we think. He said it twice. It's not just about choosing a playable path, like our Traleblazer does, but ultimately about Free Will. The chaotic unpredictability of an individual freely choosing their actions. Can it be one of the reasons why he wasn't chosen by Nous? Nous who's all about predicting and calculating the future, which is the opposite of the notion of free will?)

It seems like Aventurine long gave up the idea of having agency; he sees himself as "a cog in the machine known as the IPC's Strategic Investment Department". With his "Good luck makes one powerful, but destiny? Inherently unjust" and "Go ahead, use me as you wish". He basically sees himself as a slave to his supernatural gift and his predetermined destiny. Compare to Ratio's "about Aventurine" voiceline: "we can't chalk it all up to "good luck". Meaning, it's not just your luck; give yourself some credit for your achievements; you can change things.

Even their banner's names show the difference of their worldviews in terms of free will and determinism: Aventurine's "Gilded Imprisonment" vs. Ratio's "Panta Rhei" (which can be translated as "everything changes").

Aventurine considers his supernatural luck a gift from Gaiathra Triclops, who's theorized to actually be Ena the Order, which makes even more sense from this order/chaos point of view.

Aventurine probably knew that his path on Penacony led him towards inevitable death. "No reason to choose otherwise, and no other choice." What saved him in the end? It was two people: Mr. Chaotic himself, Veritas "Choose your own path" Ratio, and Acheron. I don't know where IX stands in this dichotomy of Chaos and Order. Probably nowhere. But if I were to choose, I'd say they lean towards Order. Or rather against the free will of Chaos. "Yes, you can do whatever you want, but why would you if it all is unlimately meaningless". But IX's factions are kind of opposed to them, so I'm curious what Acheron's personal opinion is on this.

Speaking of IX's factions opposing them, the "Dr. Ratio is a Doctor of Chaos" theory has never been so strong!

And what was our major encounter with the Order as an ingame Path? It was the Perfect Dream created by Sunday, where everybody's living their perfect lives, unwilling and unable to change it. Btw, who was one of the first people who woke up from this Dream?

Sunday and Robin also represent the opposites. Unlike her brother, devoted to Order, Robin, representing "Chaos", respects the diverse individuals as a part of a harmonious choir.

BTW, off topic but where else could I have seen a short message containing both good luck wishes and "Death" in quotation marks? Coiucidence? (yes)

It's interesting to look at Aeons and their major factions through the lens of the confrontation between Chaos and Order (not Ena the Order but Order in an abstact way).

Which can be understood in different ways. Free will vs. prophecy. Choosing your own path vs. calculating the future. Destruction vs. Finality. Personal strife vs. organized Preservation. Individuality vs. Harmony.

Speaking of which, we can kind of sort some of the Aeons and major factions into two opposing camps.

Who would be on the "Order" side?

Nous who can predict (and thus predetermine) the future through their calculation.

Preservation, who's main faction, the IPC, calculates planets' chances of survival in percents and who opposes Nanook (who else does that? Svarog, a super intelligent machine himself, who's later thwarted by the "unknown variable" - our Trailblazer, who only possessed the power of Destrustion at the time).

Stellaron Hunters, led by a person who's known as Destiny's Slave and can predict the future, also oppose Nanook.

Hunt, who's main faction, Xianzhou, is led by people like Jing Yuan, "The Divine Foresight" (who's so smart that it seems like he can predict the future), or Fu Xuan, whose actual ability to predict the future comes from Nous. They also oppose Nanook.

And of course Terminus the Finality, who travels backwards in time and is all about predicting the future, symbolizes the inavitable end of all things. 

And on the side, representing Chaos, we have, for example:

Nanook, whose path, the Destruction, seems kind of similar to Finality but actually somehow the opposite of it.

Mythos, who "strives to challenge the certainty of Nous the Erudition".

And of course, Akivili the Trailblaze, representing the ultimate freedom to go wherever you want, to "choose your own path", if you will.

So it all kind of boils down to Destrucion vs Finality at the end. It's interesting that at the moment we are expected to see Nanook as a "bad guy", as we ally with more factions opposed to them. Although I'm sure actually it's more complicated and messy than that. 

For example, from Data Bank on Akivili: "There are three directions on the compass of destiny — the Unknown, the Known, and the Unknowable. THEY can tolerate the Unknown, but will never bow to the Unknowable". How does it factor into all this Knowable/Unknowable Domain stuff and reaching outside the Circle of Knowladge? 

BTW I actually have only a very vague idea of the game's deep lore at best, and I also understood like maybe 20% of what happened in the Unknowable Domain, to take it all with a grain of salt.

From deduction, we can tell Dr. Kel isn't a normal human, quite special indeed, he can eat a lot of bad foods and not get hurt from this, decomposing deers, raw eggs, bugs, and a lot more.

Dr. kel is stronger than many humans (can chuck a 400-pound atv with ease, survive falls and tumbles that would break human bones), its obvious Dr. kel isn't human to a degree. First, who and why?

The most viable options are arirals. Could be some test of sorts, to see if ariral could mate with humans and what the offspring would look like (it's a viable option, I'm sorry), or perhaps Dr. kel is the victim of alien abduction and genetic modification. All we know is that arirals had something to do with it, and arirals have become more familiar to earth than we think. As we can tell by the poster in the base, the previous inhabitants have seen warp arrows. And want to believe.

But why is Dr kel part ariral?... we have a few reasons.

1: As I said, perhaps an ariral mated with a human, for two reasons: because they were in love, and they are testing if it was possible to have offspring with a human. (It's viable, I'm sorry)

2: as we know, their medical system and science are advanced! Far beyond us. But, let's be honest, would they be greedy like us? They do have corruption in their government, so the medical care is probably corrupted, too. And expensive. And arirals are poisonous to humans! Requiring a vacation to help us adapt to them. But, if a human was part ariral, they'd be immune to an extent. Right? So, it could be Dr. kel is a bridge for money, less cash for creating the vaccine, and paying to get it. Plus, it would help create a connection between human and ariral. Dr. kel could be a future ambassador. And if the mating thing is right, these arirals at the array, could be people sent to study them, or one scientist and a parent.

Or, if the genetics manipulation theory is correct, the arirals who are at the array are both scientist and are testing his durability, strength, and agility (explaining the 'pranks' they play), which makes sense, because they seemingly are both talls, and when they push Dr kel, they survive and with little to no bruises (tall arirals are 8× stronger then humans), they also leave ariral food for Dr kel, such as the purple fruit, which shows the genetic manipulation does have limits.

From both theories, they both can either be right, or im batshit insane! Either way I'm for it!

Now, does Dr kel know they are an ariral?..

This is mainly for the ariral parent theory, but if ya squint those eyes, it could fit the genetics manipulation theory.

Well, Dr. kel is a human who willingly went to the array, which is seemingly total isolation from humanity, and abolace that has claimed many human lives! And with Dr ena as their friend, ena has told Dr. kel probably, and wants Dr. kel to back out of it! But Dr. Kel wants to go here for some reason! We all know Dr. bao doesn't care if Dr. kel dies. It's just a little more paperwork for a weak for him! So, Dr. kel is purposely self isolating away from humans and friends. It's possible his parent told him to keep his strange tendencies to himself (ariral parent theory) because the big bad government would take them away if Dr. kel didn't keep it a secret! And so, Dr. kel is probably a little paranoid still of humans, childhood trauma? And we do see that Dr. kel is traumatized a little or paranoid, at least.

It's not a truly perfect theory, but if any writers out their take my ideas, go ahead and make something magical! I might try to as well-

2. cursed prince! ratio x alchemist m! reader: all knowledge comes at a price. cursed by his imperial tutor NOUS after accessing heretical material, he's fated to live entrapped in stone forever. a hundred years later, a scientist is transported to the kingdom of metis; a place where academia thrives but only the approved content. you're not sure why the hell you're in the indie rpg lament of ouroboros, but you do know it sucks and you'd rather die than come across the irritating main cast. what better way to have fun than to access the hidden side of magic through use of scientific formulae? unfortunately, the practice of alchemy is heretical to the kingdom and so you daylight as a sculptor! strange, this particular rock you started carving out of a whim looks like the deposed prince of a century back, your apprentice aventurine notes. how odd! how strange! veritas ratio is name you've never come across in-game; maybe it's because you didn't read enough lore about its stupid collectibles. regardless, every time you cast a detail - a smoother ear, a more textured iris - the ever-conscious prince ratio regains just a little more of his senses. and maybe it's your knowledge, or the intuition you possess, but something tells you there's a deeper meaning to the statue you started carving out of boredom. and what a coincidence that alchemy transmutates materials!

3. theology student! sunday x m reader (roommate au): something tells you the finicky orchestral conductor and theology student sunday quite dislikes you. is it the purse of his lips as you walk past in crooked formal wear that informs you? is it the jarring chords scraping against the fluting lilt of the strings and brasses? is it the harsh glare in his eyes as you walk past him on campus? it's perhaps the worst and unluckiest week in your life as soon as the new school year starts: your girlfriend's dumped you after her crush on the aforementioned halovian grows too pressing for her to stay quiet about, while you're assigned sunday as a roommate to rub more salt in the wound. but maybe his fluttering wings aren't as indicative of his frustration as they seem, and maybe you're not as headache-inducing as he quite imagined. when two sets of philosophies and grudges clash abruptly like this, what could possibly remain standing from the fallout?

anyway !!! i love him because he’s a silly, chaotic mad scientist type villain (which i’m very weak for), and because his character is so dense and interesting!! that fact that he basically chose immortality for himself, his search for chaos …… how far he’s willing to go for his goals (literally giving birth to yuji?? like????) HE’S JUST SO FUN . also he’s very attractive no matter the body ………. and he’s a Mother . i really can’t get past that. i have the softest spot for characters who mess around with gender and kenny is the perfect example of that 😭

Sonadowtober 2024 Day 27

Day 27 was costume I couldn't think of much(I mean I could always draw Shadow & Sonic with trick-or-treating with the kids) so did Ena Sonic & Shadow dressed up for Halloween

Ena Sonic is dressed as an angel scientist while Shadow tried to dress as Terios/prototype Shadow. I was going to draw Ena Sonic dressed as Maria with a cardboard version of Shadow's Black Arms wings but that might be awkward as both they & Shadow would feel awkward about this.(I'll explain this one day)

This is the last of the traditionally drawn pics for Sonadowtober, I got at least 2 digital pics to work on before I'm done.

The Most Rarest, Ancient Ants and The Quest to Rediscover Them

Australia is home to a wide range of ant species. One that might spring to mind is the Bulldog/Jack jumper ant, genus myrmecia.

As you can see, these ants have quite big eyes. This is because bulldog ants are very dependant on vision, something most other ant species have replaced with pheromonal (scent) trails.

But we aren't here to talk about them. We're here to discuss their cooler, shady cousin,

the Dinosaur ant (Nothomyrmecia macrops).

They might look all cute, but they are much more than that.

These ants are possibly the rarest and most primitive of all ant species, and this shows in their behaviour.

Like the Bulldog ant, these ants rely only on their vision as apposed to pheromones. Colonies only range from 50-100 individuals, when most ant species have colonies in the thousands. Furthermore, queens only lay one generation of eggs every year!

Because of this small size, workers can not effectively compete with other species such as Camponotus and Iridomyrmex. Thus, these ants are exclusively nocturnal so they don't have to hunt alongside the diurnal ant species.

Infact, the Dinosaur and Bulldog ant are so similar that the Dinosaur ants genus name, 'Nothomyrmecia', means 'False Bulldog ant'. The species name, 'macrops', means 'big eyes'.

This species was first discovered in the form of two worker specimens by Amy Ena Crocker and colleagues, supposedly inland from Israelite Bay in Western Australia.

Due to its primitive appearance and unique body shapes, scientists were eager to find more specimens. Many expeditions were set out to locate this ant over the next three decades, all of which failed. One of the more notable expeditions was lead by the late, the great entomologist E. O. Wilson (who literally invented sociobiology!!!)

However, on October 22, 1977, entomologist Robert W. Taylor and colleagues would rediscover a lone worker in Poochera, South Australia. I'll let nullarbor.net take it away:

"Spurred on by rumours that an American scientist was coming to search for the lost ant, Dr. Taylor apparently mounted one last ditch attempt to beat the Americans to the punch. By an incredible stroke of good luck - if it could be called that - Dr Taylor and his group were driving to Western Australia when their vehicle struck mechanical problems at Poochera. As we all know, even the best laid plans can go astray, and Dr. Taylor's expedition was forced to make an unscheduled stop, and camp for the night at Poochera.

"Later that evening Dr. Taylor conducted an impromptu insect survey in the mallee scrub adjacent to camp. There's no doubt the last thing on Dr. Taylor's mind was Nothomyrmecia - after all, the last and only recorded sighting was made 46 years earlier, and even that was fully 1300 kilometres away to the west. Poochera was definitely the last place where Dr. Taylor expected to find Nothomyrmecia - but there it was, one solitary Nothomyrmecia worker ant crawling on a eucalyptus tree trunk.

"The sight was truly astonishing. Dr. Taylor then rushed back to his colleagues and in true Australian style he announced to the world, "The bloody bastard's here! I've got the Notho-bloody- myrmecia!"

I'd like to imagine that's true.

Poochera, which features Nothomyrmecia abundantly in the streets, is perhaps the only town I know of that survives exclusively off of ant tourism.

I'm still fleshing it out, but here's what I got so far for my new PRSK AU:

It's called Shelter. Because of animal shelters, a place of protection, and the song (I'm very specifically thinking about the Vocaloid and UTAU chorus version ↓)

The idea so far is that for the past decade or two, there's been an illegal experiment going on where this group of "scientists" collect kids with the intent on turning them into animals. The majority of these kids were kidnapped while on their way to school, from parks, even from their bedrooms. And others were sold to them by their parents as a form of punishment.

Of course, after years of tests and experiments to see how far their animal instincts can go, some of these kids were able to escape.

Rui, Akito and Mafuyu were the fastest in the group who escaped and thus were able to help get more kids out. In total, eleven of them were able to escape:

Rui, Akito, Honami and Minori (who were turned into dogs)

Airi (who was turned into a cat)

Shizuku and Mafuyu (who were turned into rabbits)

Kohane (who was turned into a snake)

Emu and Mizuki (who were turned into birds)

and

Ichika (who was turned into a spider)

Everyone else was caught before they could escape.

The ones who did are planning how to get everyone else out. But a hurdle hits them when Mizuki and Emu, who were able to fly back and hide from sight, overheard that the other kids were being separated and sent to different labs. Having them all together proved to be an error since a massive breakout had happened and some managed to escape. Having them in smaller groups means less kids to focus on. Less kids to focus on means the people guarding them can keep a closer eye on them. And if another breakout occurs, everyone who tries to escape will be put into lockdown. No food. No water. Just them in a dark room until whoever's in charge decides they've learned their lesson.

With that in mind, they become more determined to help free the other kids from that prison.

Slowly, but surely, they're able to do so. It's dangerous and they have had times were they were only able to save one or two kids.

The ones who were saved were taken to Shelter, a sanctuary made by Mizuki's and Emu's sisters who were both grateful when the younger girls returned home. The two, along with the rest of the Otori family and parents of some of the other kids, provided what they could to ensure these kids would be safe and comfortable, especially those who wouldn't return home because they were sold into the experiment (Mafuyu, Toya and Ena).

There are just three more kids they need to save. But while they were able to get everyone else while on they were on the road, these three have almost made it to their new location. So if they want to get them out before they arrive, they have to go fast and they can't stop.

The ones who ultimately go on the last rescue mission are Rui, Akito, Ichika, Mafuyu and Mizuki. Following their plans, they're able to catch up with the van transporting these kids. They were able to quickly subdue the "scientists" and open the van revealing the last three kids. Two boys and a girl. One of the boy and the girl looked alike and the other boy had two toned blue hair. The blue haired boy and the girl were holding onto the other boy as he growled at them. It took them a moment to realize they weren't the "scientists" and a little longer to fully trust them.

And that's what I have so far. Here's some more stuff I plan to add but want to flesh out more:

"Scientists" are in quotes because they aren't scientists. At least either not anymore or they never got the title officially. They call themselves that because they're doing experiments and trying to "discover" something new. It's also to make them seem less threatening whenever they approach a kid with parents around. They lie about the experiment and will switch up their story to appeal to parents. They lie about how well behaved the kids who attended their classes went. How they learned respect and became obedient. Sometimes they just tell the truth: your kid seems to disobey you, wouldn't you think having a way to make them obey would be better?? A way to ensure they never leave you. We can do something for you. For a price, of course.

There is no one specific breed of animal they get experimented as. It's a combination of them, so they're all classed by the basic names (dog, cat, bird, etc.).

Mafuyu's, Toya's, Ena's and Akito's parents all try to see their kids once they escape, but are prohibited from doing so. The only one who can is Mafuyu's dad, but he respects their decision to not see him for the time being. Part of me wants the parents who sold their kids into this illegal experiment to face the consequences, but I'm not sure when to have it happen or how long it should be.

Tsukasa, Saki and Toya were the first group to be taken to the new labs. Because of this they got the furthest out before the others could get to them. While on the road minor experiments were done on them, expanding on the animal instincts they had, which is why Tsukasa ended up growling at them (the rescue group) when they opened the van. To him, the doors opening was always a sign of a threat. A threat he had to face on to ensure Saki and Toya weren't hurt.

Mizuki's sister moved back to Japan as soon as she finished college. Knowing her sister was taken made her want to return home so she could help search. It was during this time she met Hinata Otori, who's sister was also taken. They would end up creating Shelter when the two girls quite literally crashed into the Otori household.

Animal instincts and features vary depending on how long they got experimented on and a bit of Frankenstein-ing. For example, Tsukasa and Saki both have cat eyes (literally and in the sense they can see in the dark), better balance and their hair can puff out (it doesn't stand up right tho), since they were both amongst the first taken, while Akito, who was amongst the last taken, only has a slightly better sense of smell and hearing.

Kohane had the biggest amputation done since she was turned into a snake (she lost both her legs). And while she can get around, it does hurt. She also has a lot more fainting spells due to her instinct to play dead when she gets scared.

He runs into the same trap/enemy constantly because of one area at the beginning of the game, explodes anything with the word explosive on it, cannot stop greeting the player, recites the entirety of the 2012 Wikipedia article for chairs because was was sitting in one, and is basically a permanent tutorial npc. Someone fix this man's code please.

I haven’t read the lore yet, but I saw on the reference sheet that her body is more based around “her mannequin counterparts”. She definitely seems way more connected to those guys than the OG ENA.

Correcto! Her body composition consisted of mannequin matter, and her form was heavily modified by her past creators (scientists) to appear more polygonal instead of the malleable shapes mannequins have.

Halfway through, the experiment was halted due to stray marigold petals interfering with the process, giving Quartus sentience before they could finish. This led to her creators to abandoning the project and leaving Quartus behind in within the cold walls of a once abundant factory.

(This also explains why Quartus' body has sharp angles down to her legs, while the upper body is a bit more round-)
