Habeas for Superheroes, Part 12: Saving the Liebermans(Daredevil, Matt/Foggy)
Read full work on AO3
It was late in the evening when Foggy headed out to Queens for the second time that day. Sarah, as she'd told Foggy to call her, was waiting outside. "I managed to get my father to look after the kids," she said, "but they're all three of them wondering what's going on. My son got aggressive about it." She sighed at that. "I don't know what we're going to tell them."
"We'll figure it out," said Foggy. "Situations like this, you always have to figure out things like that as you go along. You can try preparing things beforehand, but whatever you're planning, it won't work out. Trust me."
She, for instance, didn't yet know exactly what she was going to say to Matt when he met them in Manhattan to lead them to where David Lieberman was hiding. They had only communicated by email since her first visit to Queens that morning. She was determined not to apologize, because she wasn't sorry. But she was aware that just telling him why she'd done it would probably lead to the kind of argument they did not want to have in front of a stranger.
Maybe Matt himself realized, that, though. When Foggy and Sarah emerged onto the street to find him waiting there, as soon as Foggy had called out his name he was stepping forward and offering his hand, saying, "Good evening, Mrs. Lieberman. My name is Matt Murdock. I'm Ms. Nelson's husband. Your husband is staying near the river. This way." Then he just turned and walked off, making a show of using the cane, but not taking Foggy's arm. Or getting anywhere near her, even though she'd worn shoes more than loud enough to avert any suspicions.
Sarah threw Foggy a concerned look at this. Foggy looked away, just saying, "Come on, let's get this over with."
They kept close to him as they reached the river, walking through the dark corners of New York that they'd both avoided before now, even as those they loved had plunged into them. It wasn't a cold night, but Sarah was shivering anyway, and at least looked distracted enough she might have not noticed the ease with which Matt made his way, even though there wasn't much to mark the route for a blind man. Not much for even a seeing one, honestly. The buildings all looked the same in the dark, at least until they saw the one with a light in its entrance.
David Lieberman was waiting for them there. He was a fairly tall man with dirty blonde hair and beard, extremely disheveled at the moment, and his clothes were in worse shape. The minute his wife laid eyes on him, she strode up to him and shoved him into the door. Which wasn't very stable; it gave way behind him and sent him stumbling further back. Sarah didn't even seem to notice. She just moved forward into the broken doorframe and shoved him again, and again.
Foggy couldn't make out all of her words. There was "What did you do?" and "We saw you die!" (that one was loud and she yelled it multiple times) and something about months.
As Matt moved forward to intervene, Foggy quietly said, "I think you should let her have it out with him, Matt. In fact, I think we should move out of earshot. Or at least far enough away. Unless you think there's anyone dangerous around."
"We're the only people in the immediate area," said Matt. "Back to the river and I won't even catch their voices without concentrating." They didn't have to worry about being overheard by the Liebermans; they could hear enough from inside the building to know that.
They walked back to the river in silence. Foggy could feel the tension rising, but she also felt their surroundings, despite Matt's belief they were safe for the moment. She might refrain from yelling at him just for that, lucky him.
When they got there, and Foggy was staring out at water barely visibly in the darkness, Matt spoke first, his voice very cool as he asked, "You are aware you may have just gotten all four of them killed?"
A harsh cut, but one Foggy had anticipated. "I admit I didn't anticipate her taking matters into her own hands like that. I made it pretty clear I wasn't planning for anyone to do anything in response to my telling her."
"I think her husband did. I think he had a pretty damn good reason for keeping her in the dark, that being he knew her and he knew she might react like this."
Probably neither of them anticipated the nerve that one touched. "So you're just assuming men like you two know what's best for your wives? I thought I told you what I thought of that nonsense back in college!" It was very hard not to yell. "We wives are not just pets to be protected from our own foolish impulses."
Matt looked a little hangdog and like he wanted to protest that whole thing, but a moment later he instead said, "But you're not like Mrs. Lieberman. You're not incapable of taking care of yourself, and you actually have some idea of what you're up against, and anyway, the people who would go after you can't so long as they don't know I'm Daredevil, so we've never quite been in their current situation."
"And if we were?" Foggy asked, because that was an important question, and this might be her best chance to get it answered.
Matt fell silent. After half a minute or so, Foggy gave up on an immediate answer, and continued, "While you're chewing on that, let me also point out that if David had slipped up-and do remember he had no experience with anything even remotely like this-Sarah would've had no way to know they were coming for her or their children."
"I'm pretty sure he could've called her very fast, if it came to that. The kids, too, even if they'd been at school or otherwise out of the house. I couldn't tell everything about the set-up he's got in there-and I don't think anyone who wasn't an IT professional could've either-but I know enough about his activities that it would shock me if he couldn't."
Maybe that was true. But Foggy still went on, "She's told me a bit more about what the past months have been like for her, too. She's been very alone, you know. Most of the friends she and her husband had snubbed her after he was condemned as a traitor. And the kids have suffered similar in school, and the son, Zach, has basically become a problem kid in response. And she truly was devastated to lose him. I don't usually believe traditional claptrap about women and men, but I am becoming convinced that a woman absolutely can get herself so invested in her husband that losing him can break her."
"Foggy," Matt's stricken response to this wasn't a surprise. She was a little more caught off guard by just how hard seeing him that way still got to her. It took her time to pull her thoughts or feelings together enough to say anything more.
Too much time. First, Matt said, "Everything he did in there was for them, you know. What he did to get them in this predicament might not have been, but he's no noble crusader wanting to dedicate even half of his life to this. His main goal now is finding a way home he can live with."
There was a romanticism to that, Foggy acknowledged. But if there was one thing she had learned over the past year and a half, it was that romance didn't really get you anything in the end, not even emotional comfort.
But the pause in the argument had made her realize she was tired, and didn't want to get off onto that tangent with Matt. She seemed to get tired more easily than she had even a year ago.
She found herself asking, "So, what are we doing anyway? Do we want to get the Avengers involved in this?"
"Perhaps," said Matt. "They could even conceivably get the entire Lieberman family out of the country if they're willing to go, and even if we shouldn't involve Stark right now, they could get the incriminating documents leaked probably within days. And that's if they even bother trying to not be connected to it. It would probably be a stronger case if they weren't, but I'm not sure Rogers has ever cared about such things."
"Either way, that probably would solve the current dilemma, if Lieberman didn't know anything the world hadn't heard about, too, and his getting killed again would only make them look worse." As Foggy said this, she observed her husband's reaction. She would've liked him to be a lot more pleased by this.
He only said, "We don't know how much he knows, not really, especially when he's had half a year to do nothing but hack into all the government's systems. It would be safer for him and his family if we handled this more quietly. Romanov could probably think of some way to do it."
"I can guess the real reason you don't want to go public, you know," Foggy snapped, because she already had. "You just don't want to feel responsible when Frank finds out and of course he's probably going to want to kill everyone involved, and ultimately, he's only likely to hold back for the sake of our cases for so long. But I don't know if he'd even succeed, Matt. He's never gone after anyone truly powerful."
"That's not my only reason," Matt sighed, which probably was true enough. "But I think he probably would succeed, at least for one of them. Possibly get himself killed in the process, which of course he doesn't care about, but Karen would."
"And she wouldn't be the only one, would she?" Foggy asked, because Karen was the one more obviously emotionally entangled with Frank, but she had already thought Matt was, too, in a weird way. Though really, if she was being extremely honest, she wasn't indifferent to his fate herself.
Matt might have even looked embarrassed for a second. Then he said, "Either way, we still need to get the Liebermans out. Do you think they'll refuse to be evacuated?"
"I hope not," said Foggy. "Though maybe we'd better go check in on them, make sure Sarah hasn't stormed off alone in the dark part of town in the middle of the night."
She hadn't; when Matt and Foggy returned to the building, they found both Liebermans standing together in front of the entrance. "So," Foggy asked them, "do you two have any idea what you want to do now?"
"Only that we want to be fully reunited as a family," said Sarah, "in any way that's relatively safe for us."
"So you would be willing to leave the country?" Matt asked.
The two of them looked at each other. "Is the situation really that hopeless?" David Lieberman asked.
Foggy saw Matt consider it, as she did the same. "Anything we attempt to do that's legal will inevitably take time," she said, "and we'd definitely have to hide you somewhere to keep you from getting killed, I'm afraid."
"And probably you and your children as well," said Matt, "because as soon as the people responsible for this realize you're still working against them, well, if they can't get to you, they'll get to anyone you care about that they can reach. In fact, do you two have anyone else who might need protecting?"
"My father," said Sarah. Looking at her husband, she added, "Maybe your sister, too? Even if I'm not sure anyone's heard from her since the sit shiva. I sure haven't."
"It might not have to be forever, though," Foggy offered. "You might be able to come back when everything is resolved."
"I think we both know enough to know that's going to take a long time," said David. "Thanks for offering the hope of us returning eventually, though."
"Very well, then," said Matt. "There are people who can help you, and I expect to be in contact with them next week. Until then, Mrs. Lieberman, we have to decide where you and your children will stay. We have other friends who can take you in, or can even watch over them if you choose to stay in your own house, though I would advise against that."
"We'll have to go back there, though," said Sarah. "The kids and my father are there." Foggy heard the terror when it first came into her voice, when it at last hit her just how much danger her entire family was now in.
"I've seen no signs of them paying any more attention to the three of you at the moment," said David. "Even if we did anything today that might change that, surely there'll be at least a few hours' lag."
"Probably," Matt agreed. "Foggy and I should both take you home. I'll call one of my friends to try to meet us there."
The friend he had in mind turned out to be Danny Rand. That made sense; Luke Cage was far too high profile to work for this, and Jessica Jones might refuse to help. Foggy was happy to leave Matt to deal with him and keep nearer to Sarah.
She spent a few minutes debating with herself whether to ask it, but when they were almost out of the deserted area, she did: "Should I not have told you?"
"Absolutely you should have," said Sarah. "I mean, I suppose you really should ask me that in a few more days...but I think my answer will be the same. Whatever happens to the four of us now...at least provided we all survive it, we'll probably all four be better off."
"Wow," said Foggy, because while Sarah had told her about her various woes, she hadn't realized it was *that* bad.
Matt finished his phone call with the news that Danny hoped to reach Queens in one or two hours. "Maybe longer, if what he's dealing with right now takes more time than he's expecting."
They couldn't talk as much on the train, but when they emerged into the Liebermans' neighborhood, Matt said, "I think you'll like Danny. He'd a good guy, very nice."
She, Foggy thought, probably would. On the other hand, she wasn't looking forward to how her son was likely to deal with him.
Very early the next morning
After it was decided they should stagger their departures from the Liebermans' house, Foggy left first. Not caring to travel too far alone in the dark, she called a cab to pick up her from a few blocks away, arriving back in Hell's Kitchen as the sun was just starting to peek out from between the buildings.
She headed up the stairs, trying to figure out, in her exhausted state, exactly how late to work she could get away with being that day. When she took as glance at her email as she walked into the apartment, she did so with the thought that hopefully there wouldn't be anything important.
Instead, she found herself reading an email from Jessica, asking her to call as soon as she could, regardless of the late/early hour. Foggy spent a good two minutes trying to mentally stretch the definition of the word "could," before sighing and calling.
The third ring had come and gone, and Foggy was a split second from sighing in relief and disconnecting, when she heard Jessica's, "Oh, now you're answering, Ms. Nelson?"
"I only saw your email now. It's been a very busy night. What have you got?"
"Some real dirt on our friend Carson Wolf. Turns out along with everything else, he's been dealing in heroin. Not only that, he's been smuggling it out of Afghanistan with the bodies of military personnel killed in action. I haven't found how he's been selling it yet, or what he's then doing with the money, since it doesn't look like he's been keeping most of it-which in itself probably means more dirt, and I can think of one possibility."
Foggy, too, had a pretty good idea of just what that money had been spent on, and a guess on who'd sold the heroin as well. Her first impulse was to tell Jessica that, but not only was it way too dangerous to do that over the phone, but Matt had mentioned he'd left out Lieberman's still being alive in what he told her, and she thought perhaps it would be better if they moved him and his family to safety first.
Still, if the government had tried to murder at least two people who had both only known part of what was going on, she couldn't keep silent completely. "Listen," she said, after thinking over her words for a few moments. "I'd like you to actually sit on this information for possibly a few days, and just leave everything be; suspend the investigation. I hope I'll be able to explain why eventually, but I don't think I can yet."
"Really?" Jessica did not sound at all impressed. "If Wolf or any of his friends determines for sure that they've been snooped on-and they are almost certainly prepared for that possibility already-it's going to get way harder to find out anything else."
"I trust you to handle all that," said Foggy. "I'll get back to you later, I promise."
"Have it you way, then. But don't say I didn't warn you."
"I won't. Good..." she glanced at the clock, and just sighed, "Goodbye, then."
There was nothing else important in her emails. Foggy stayed awake just long enough to send a few of her own, notifying everyone she would probably be in late that day. Then she crawled between the sheets with her blouse still on and was asleep within seconds.
She didn't think it was long after that when she was woken by a second body collapsing onto the bed. She might have made some vague, bleary noises in response to this, before she felt a familiar hand stroke her head, and her husband's voice murmur, "Go back to sleep, Foggy."
When she woke again, late in the morning, she found Matt asleep on top of the bed, still in most of his clothes, though he had at least taken his shoes off. She pulled his socks off as well; the smell was already going to linger on his feet and pester him for probably a day or so as it was.
He stirred slightly when Foggy was in the shower; she came out to find he'd spread himself out, his head moved to where hers had been, before falling back asleep. He'd probably been drawn to her scent. Even now, she couldn't help but smile.
It was late enough she was definitely taking a cab to the office. For most of the walk down the stairs, she contemplated exactly what she was going to tell Karen and when, but, she then realized, there were probably only reasons not to tell her at the moment. She could cite them to her friend if she ever had to defend herself to her over it. And she absolutely, positively, should not feel like she was letting her down, not telling her.
She would, on the other hand, have to tell Marci and Jennifer everything that both Jessica and David had found out about Wolf. Although she couldn't tell Jennifer until she came back to New York again, and Foggy wasn't even sure when she was going to do so. Hell, even when she did, it might be Matt who ended up talking with her.
Marci, on the other hand, she could tell today. And then she would have to tell her, too, to sit on it without explaining why. She wasn't looking forward to that. Especially since she would also want to leave Frank's still being alive out of it, too, and that might be a little tricky.
It filled her with enough dread that when her phone rang just after she got into the cab, she nearly jumped. But it wasn't Marci, or Karen. It was Cheryl. Foggy would probably have to tell her a few things, too, but at the moment she had no idea how much.
When she answered the phone, Cheryl said to her, "Hey, Foggy, I think you picked the wrong morning to sleep in. Stark announced something like twenty minutes ago he's holding a press conference, in which, the announcement says, 'he will address general recent unfortunate events related to the Avengers,' although he also said he's going to talk about Colonel Rhodes' condition."
Rhodes still hadn't been seen publicly since he'd been shot down during the fight in Germany. All else aside, she was genuinely very curious to see how he was doing. The way things were going, it might just prove relevant to their activities.
She wanted to believe the rest at least wouldn't prove too bad for them. Were he a sensible person, he might have realized by now he couldn't just trust Ross's latest claims that they'd be doing everything legally and properly from there in. But of course, it was well known he was not, and Foggy did not quite trust him to not hide behind the government's current front.
"So how long do I have to get there?" Foggy asked, trying to gauge the current traffic. She was late enough the worst of it might have passed, at least.
"Officially it starts in about half an hour. You can always hope he'll be late."
Foggy wasn't going to rely on that. She went through the news websites after ending the call. Several had already started up their liveblogs, none of which yet had much to tell. There were also a lot of reports of people claiming they'd spotted Rogers or another one of his rogue Avengers near where they lived, none of which Foggy believed, but too many newly published news articles were reiterating them all.
Perhaps a little more interesting were a couple of them also listing a couple of reports of Hank Pym possibly being spotted in a bus station in Oakland. Ross and the government's other representatives hadn't ever mentioned their names when talking to the press. Even Lang's indictment hadn't mentioned them too much, and none of the other indictments had. Presumably they'd been worried about the populace's reaction to noticing that someone who had reportedly denounced the Avengers was getting charged just because they'd used his technology. That was a dangerous step to take, after all.
If the mainstream media was, at last, noticing the existence of these two people, that was probably good for their cause. Even if none of them were yet asking if they should've been charged, instead treating them as more normal fugitives from actual justice who needed to be found.
They were maybe about ten minutes away from the office, with the press conference scheduled to start in five, when she got the text from Karen. I'd say sorry in advance, but... She actually didn't groan. She was too resigned for that.

it's my bday soon so can i have some hcs about how frank would be spending his girl's bday? 😖
oooh, mine too! are we birthday buddies? mine's may 5th 🪇
- frank is not casual about your birthday at all.
- the man starts planning thinking about it about a week in advance. in the years that you guys had been together, he'd only managed to miss it once, and though you were absolutely fine - (the Nelson, Murdock, and Page trio had certainly seen to that) - he vowed to never let it happen again.
- sex. it's always incredible with frank, but birthday sex just hits different with him. his favourite part of the process is kissing you awake, and then settling between your legs, his hot, languid tongue lighting every nerve ending in your body ablaze. he coaxes orgasm after orgasm out of you before the golden sun's even risen for the day - "c'mon, sweetheart - I know you can give me one more. there we go, that's it." peppers ticklish kisses to your temple, your cheeks, your nose, your lips. "plenty more where those came from, your birthdays' only just begun."
- gifts. the man's never been one for grand gestures, and you've never been one to want for them, so it all evens out. he pays close attention to you throughout the year; what interests you've harbored, which hobbies you've taken up. when he eventually gets around to asking you what you'd like, your answer is always the same - "you, frank. I just want you." you want him content - not even necessarily happy, because that's a complicated emotion for him - but healthy, and strong. "you've got me kid, for as long as you'll have me. now stop being so damn stubborn and tell me what you want."
- traditions. he's big on 'em, despite everything. they're a remnant of his past life, and something he really only feels comfortable exploring with you, but he looks forward to your birthday every year because of them.
one of his favourites? making you breakfast in bed. it's never anything fancy, but belgian waffles and an assortment of mixed fruits are usually his go-to. if you ever wanted to go out for dinner, he'd be more than happy to take you, but he knows how much you value his cooking, and home has never been so cozy as when its just the two of you.
another one of his favourite traditions is finding out what cake you're feeling that year and going all-out with it. black forest? no problem. victoria sponge? he's got no idea what the hell that is, but you're gettin' it. this year, when he finally finds out your wish is for a fresh tiramisu, sarah lieberman happily whips one up for you.
- you are his first introduction to taurus women. and like - he's been blessed to have had some pretty strong and amazing women in his life, but have any of them ever been as stubborn as you? have any of them ever driven him to the brink of insanity just to pull him back and make him sick with yearning all over again? the jury's still out on that one.
- your favourite part of the day is actually the evening. the only source of light in the room emanating from the candles that gutter in the cool evening breeze. you're nose-to-nose beneath the sheets, every beautiful fleck of gold in his eyes, suspended in a sea of burnt honey. "did ya have a good day, kid?" "the best day, frank." "did you make a wish at dinner?" "I did." he traces a tan, calloused fingertip down the side of your cheek, your lips, your neck."you should make another one now, just between us two." your eyelids are heavy with the weight of looming sleep, but you smile regardless. "okay, frank."
- he wants to make your birthday special not because he feels obligated to, but because he genuinely derives pleasure from treating you well. from seeing you happy. he works hard to make you feel loved each and every day throughout the year (some days are certainly better than others), but your birthday is an excuse to show you how much you mean to him, and he doesn't take it lightly in the slightest.

Bridging Boroughs - Part Three
Tumblr media
Pairing: Congressman!Bucky x reader. Platonic!Matt Murdock.
Summary: You and Bucky meet to talk after the events of the gala.
Word count: 2.9k
Warnings: Some swearing, mention of alcohol.
Part two | Part four
------------
“You are the only person I know who could end up doing something illegal on a first date,” Sam laughs. “So the transition to respectable member of congress is going well?”
Bucky glowers at him, “It’s not funny, Sam.”
“It’s kinda funny,” Sam counters.
Bucky’s in DC for work and as usual, has taken the chance to catch up with Sam for a few beers. Since Joaquin’s out of town, it’s just the two of them - and with you almost constantly on his mind, the conversation quickly turned to the events of the charity gala a few days before.
Sam sighs, recognising Bucky’s sour attitude, and continues more seriously, “Look, you said more of a misdemeanor than a felony, right?
“Yeah.”
“And well-intentioned, not immoral, and she didn’t ask you to get involved.”
“She wanted to use me as cover. Without asking.”
“Okay, that part’s not great,” Sam concedes, “But there’s clearly still some trust there, or you wouldn’t be refusing to tell me the specifics.”
Bucky frowns. He’s told Sam the broad outline of what happened at the charity gala, but he didn’t want to give away anything that could get you - or Sam, if he doesn’t disclose it - in trouble. He just wants advice on what to do.
“And I’ve never seen you fall for someone so fast,” Sam adds, lifting his beer. “Actually - I’ve never seen you fall for someone, period.”
“Except Sarah,” Bucky can’t help correcting with a smirk.
Putting his drink down hard, Sam points a stern finger at Bucky, “No. Still no.”
Bucky’s grin fades. “So what do I do?”
“About your criminal girlfriend? Give her a chance,” Sam shrugs, “Talk to her about it. Make sure she doesn’t drag you into anything worse - you said she was doing this for a friend?”
Bucky nods.
“So stay away from that friend, I guess.”
You check your phone for the hundredth time - still nothing from Bucky. The night at the gala had ended awkwardly, the flirting and teasing of your previous encounters killed by you breaking and entering into the mayor’s office. You’d understand if he didn’t want to see you again - he was a congressman, and you’d used him as an accessory - but you desperately wanted to. The memory of the kiss you’d shared still lingered in your mind.
After waiting a few days for him to make the first move, you’d caved and texted him, only for him to reply that he was in DC for the week. At least he hadn’t ignored you. Or blocked your number. But he should be back in town by now, and you’ve still heard nothing.
“A watched phone never rings,” Matt tells you with a knowing grin.
“Not helpful,” you sigh, clearing away his drink.
Matt’s taken to dropping in on you at work, trying to convince you to join his crusade against the Kingpin - although he’s still vague on the details of his plan, other than recruiting a team of vigilantes.
Despite your repeated refusals, he still turns up, sometimes just to talk or quietly work on cases at the bar. Today it’s to talk.
“You know, it’s not my fault he hasn’t called you.”
“Yeah, because a little B&E really goes down well on a first date.”
“Pretty heavy event for a first date,” Matt observes, “And you chose to do it.”
“After you asked! And what have you done with the information anyway? I’ve ruined a potentially really good relationship with a really good guy, and all for nothing.”
“Forewarned is forearmed.” He explains, before cocking his head in curiosity. “And I thought you don’t usually do relationships. Or good guys, for that matter.”
You glare at him so hard even he has to see it. “You haven’t known anything about my love life for a while now, Matt.”
He holds his hands up in submission. “Sorry. Low blow.”
You wipe down the counter to stop your hands twitching for your phone again. “Given that unwarranted observation, and since you’re only interested in good guys for your little militia, I take it that means you haven’t invited Frank?”
“No,” Matt grimaces, “He’s too out of control.”
“Meaning he won’t follow your orders.”
“Meaning he murders people. I want to protect the city, help it heal - not just rip it to pieces in a different way.”
Before you can reply your phone buzzes in your pocket and you snatch it up. It’s finally Bucky.
I’m back in town. Can we talk?
You hate how nervous you’re feeling as you walk towards your agreed meeting spot outside Central Park. You might have snapped at Matt about it, but you’re not used to being so invested in someone, especially so soon. Seeing that Bucky’s already waiting at the entrance to the park, you hope him arriving early is a sign that he’s feeling similarly.
“Hi.”
“Hi.” You both stand awkwardly, unsure how to greet each other. The soft cheek kiss he welcomed you with before the gala feels like a million years ago.
“Okay, look, I’m sorry,” you burst out in a rush, exasperated by the uneasy atmosphere, “You invited me to the thing, and you’re a congressman, and I used you as cover for something not entirely above board, which was not cool of me. If you don’t want to see me again, that’s fine. But I wanted to say sorry.”
Bucky opens his mouth to respond, but you keep going.
“Although you chose to join me in doing that, which I didn’t ask you to, and it was absolutely for a good reason, and I didn’t plan it, and no one got hurt or even found out about it. And a fancy, high profile gala is a really weird choice for a first date, so you kind of set a precedent for unusual behaviour, so you’re not really blameless in this.”
Bucky looks both amused and surprised at your outburst. “Are you done?” He asks.
“I could continue,” you answer defensively.
You hide your delight as Bucky smiles, “You’re right about it being a bad choice for a first date. I guess I wanted an excuse to see you, and I had the event anyway, so it made sense in my head.”
“So you were using me?” You challenge with a smirk. “You’re saying you’re the one who should be apologising?”
“Don’t push it,” Bucky answers, “But - can we reset?” He nods to the park you still haven’t entered, “I hear a walk is a more normal first date these days.”
“So I’m forgiven?” You ask hopefully.
“Let’s see how this goes,” he answers more cautiously.
One hour, a couple hot dogs and an ice cream later, you’d say the date was going well.
“So, congress - what’s that about?” You ask.
“Well,” Bucky begins, “congress is a branch of government with the power to pass or-”
“Okay, smartass,” you interrupt, gently smacking his arm as he grins, “I mean why for you? What made you want to run?”
“I wanted to make a difference,” Bucky answers, simply and seriously, “I thought I could stand up for people who aren’t really represented at the moment.”
“People with ‘special abilities’?”
Bucky nods.
“And do you feel like you’re able to do that?” You don’t doubt his intentions, but it wasn’t too long ago you felt even more strongly than Matt that working within the system was hopeless - and recent experience has taught you that the only politicians able to actually effect change are the bad ones.
Bucky pauses for a moment before answering, “I think it’s possible. I believe it is. It’s complicated - and difficult - but there’s a lot that needs changing in this country, and this seemed like the best way to help make it happen.”
“I’ve heard that before.” You can’t help thinking of Matt again, and his repeated assertions that he could help people using the law just as well as, or better than, outside of it. And how thoroughly he seems to have given up on that idea now. “So why the drive to help people? You’ve been through a lot, no one would blame you if you wanted an easy life, and politics is, like, the opposite of that. Are you just that good of a guy?”
“Maybe I’d like you to think so,” Bucky shoots you a roguish smile, “but actually it was sort of my therapist’s idea.”
Your horror is only half in jest, “Your therapist suggested you go into politics? Christ, Bucky, you need a new therapist.”
He laughs and you glow at the warm sound, the distractingly sexy way his eyes crinkle, and at you at being the cause of it.
“Making amends was her idea.” He explains. “Owning my past and taking responsibility. Acknowledging what I did, apologising for it, and making up for it.”
You frown, confused. “We’re talking about your past as-”
Bucky takes a deep breath, “As the Winter Soldier, yeah.”
“But - I thought you were brainwashed or something.” You remembered the news around the time of his pardon, the details re-emerging when he ran for congress.
“I was,” he clarifies.
There’s no joke in your coldly appalled tone any more. “Your therapist told you to take responsibility for things you were forced to do - things you had no control over?”
Bucky looks puzzled by your outrage in a way that half breaks your heart and half enrages you on his behalf. “I still did those things.” His voice is quiet, but firm. “I remember doing them.”
“Bucky-”
“Making amends helps. It helps with the guilt, the ni-” He stops himself, not ready to be so vulnerable.
For a moment, you’re unsure how to react, then an idea flashes into your mind. “Is it okay if I make a quick phone call?”
“Alright,” Bucky’s answer is uncertain.
He watches warily as you step away from him, unsure what’s prompted this. Maybe he should have been clearer about his past, but it’s not exactly a secret. You’d known who he was from the moment you met, and part of what he liked about you was how completely unphased by it you were - not just untroubled by it, but willing to sass, argue and hold your ground against him.
But perhaps he’d misjudged something somewhere.
You return to him, a broad smile on your face that he’s starting to recognise as the look that appears when you have a plan.
“Are you okay with me derailing this date in a much more legal way than last time?”
A quick cab ride later, the two of you arrive at an unassuming diner back in Hell’s Kitchen. Bucky follows as you enter and head into a private room at the back, but he lingers to read the simple paper sign on the door - there’s a ringed image of a defiantly raised fist and the words Kilgrave Victim Support Group. Understand, Rebuild, Move Forward.
When he catches up with you, you’re greeting the smiling man who seems to be in charge and turn to introduce them. “Bucky, this is Malcolm. Malcolm, Bucky.”
Malcolm steps towards him with an outstretched hand, “Great to meet you, man. Welcome.”
“Thanks,” Bucky shakes his hand, but says to you both, “I’m not sure I should be here. I don’t even know what a Kilgrave is.”
“It’s not just for Kilgrave’s victims,” you assure him.
Malcolm nods enthusiastically. “Right. It was set up for Kilgrave’s victims, but we support all survivors of mind control here. Everyone will introduce themselves, but we’ve had people affected by the thing in Westview, someone who worked for some organisation called the TVA, even Professor Selvig drops by when he’s town, after the incident in 2012. Actually we should probably change the name.” He adds as an afterthought. “But I promise you’re more than welcome here, Bucky.”
“I don’t know,” Bucky hesitates.
“You don’t have to say anything. You can just observe if you want.” Malcolm explains. “Come on, we’re about to get started.”
“Go on,” you nudge Bucky’s arm, “I have to get to work anyway. Just give it a go. And - you can let me know after if you want a second date? This doesn’t count as part of the date though, you can just rate me on the fun park stuff. And remember that I bought you a hot dog.”
Bucky rolls his eyes at you, but you can tell there are some nerves beneath his gruff exterior. “Fine.”
It’s hours since the support group will have finished, and you realise you’re back to waiting for a text from Bucky while you go through the motions at work. You resist the urge to message him and ask how it went, and just as you’re telling yourself - again - not to obsess over him, Bucky’s familiar frame fills the doorway. You greet him as he approaches the counter. “How was it?”
“It was - interesting,” he runs a hand through his hair, and if it wasn’t for the visible tension in his shoulders you’d have to force yourself to focus on what he’s saying and not how attractive it is when he does that. “I went for a walk after. I guess I’ve got some things to think about. But I think I’ll go back.”
“That’s great, Bucky,” you tell him softly, biting back the question you’re desperate to ask about a second date.
As though he’s read your mind, Bucky glances at you apologetically before dropping his gaze to the floor. “About - us. I think I need some time to think about that too. And you should as well. Given my job, and my past, things are going to be complicated. You need to think about what you really want. And so do I.”
Your heart drops, but your usual defensiveness kicks in and you try to play it off. “I mean, it’s not like I’m proposing here, Buck. We can just have fun, right?”
His troubled eyes meet yours, “I don’t know.” He answers quietly. “Sorry.”
With that, he turns and leaves. You’re shocked at the strength of the disappointment that rips through you and have to blink rapidly to push back tears. Taking a deep breath, you force yourself to carry on with work as normal, and have just rounded the counter when the door crashes open to reveal Bucky once again.
“I don’t know what the fuck I was thinking,” he says as he strides desperately towards you, reaching for you and pulling you into him. His lips crash into yours in a heated, frenzied kiss, which you return full force, your hands grasping at each other, tongues and teeth tangling, the desperate press of your bodies against each other saying more than any of your words have been able to.
I want you.
I need you.
It’s only a piercing wolf-whistle from one of the regulars that prompts you to break apart, laughing breathlessly. Bucky presses his forehead to yours as you flip a middle finger at the old man who interrupted you.
“You can back out on me any time,” Bucky tells you.
“No chance.” You grin back at him. “Can you stay until close?”
“Of course.”
You kiss him gently, your lips teasing his, “Then I can take you home?”
Bucky pulls back slightly, running his fingers reverently along your jaw, tracing your mouth with his thumb. “As tempting as that is,” he tells you softly, “I don’t want to rush this. I really like you. I want to do this properly.”
“So what was that before about needing to think about things?”
“Some bullshit,” he mutters, making you laugh again, “I wanted to protect you. It’s true that dating me will be complicated. I don’t want to make your life difficult. But I can’t stop thinking about you. I haven’t felt like this about anyone in 80 years, maybe never. If you’re up for it…”
“I am very up for it,” you assure him firmly, “And I can look after myself.”
“I know you can,” he smiles, his tone lightening, “but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to stay until your shift ends and then make sure you get home safe.”
Disentangling from each other enough for you to reluctantly get back to work, Bucky settles in at the counter.
“They’re never going to let me live that down,” you grumble goodnaturedly as you make your way over to the still chuckling regulars to collect their empty glasses.
While your back’s turned, someone enters and joins Bucky at the bar. When you see who it is, you rush over, your good mood dented.
“Evening,” Matt smiles at you, “I was just telling Congressman Barnes how good it is to meet him. I guess you two have worked things out?”
“Now’s not the time, Matt.”
“I think now’s the perfect time,” Matt answers, blithely oblivious to Bucky’s angry stare.
“I know you’re her friend,” Bucky tells him, his voice carefully even, “But I don’t think it’s a good idea for the two of us to get to know each other too well.”
Despite the hum of customers and low music in the background, a hush seems to fall over the three of you.
Ignoring Bucky’s comment, Matt leans in closer to him,  “Do you ever think, with your abilities, your skills, you could help this city more if you tried something other than being a congressman?”
“Jesus, Matt, straight in with it?” You hiss.
Bucky scowls at him. “I think the less I know about whatever you’re getting up to, the better. For all of us.”
“Seriously,” you warn Matt through gritted teeth, “drop it.”
“Fine,” he surrenders, getting up to leave. “But I’m just saying - to both of you - if you ever change your mind, there’s a lot you can get done as part of a team.”

a/n: prompt from @scealaiscoite | second installment of my valentine's day themed fics - many more to come <3
"c'mon, it's not like we haven't shared a dinner while working late before. it doesn't have to mean anything different just because of the day that's in it."
matt justifies, trying to bring you out of your shell. he's already started putting files in his bag, and all that shows you is that he's not taking no for an answer. he's right, but your gut disagrees. you can't possibly stop your feelings—you've tried. and yet, you'd rather try one more time than admit that to matt.
"it means that all our typical spots are going to be busy," you say, forcing a small smile as if matt could see it.
"it's starting to sound like you just don't want to spend time with me," he jokes, holding the door open for you, waiting for you to walk through as a confirmation you'd be joining him.
after a brief pause, a slight hesitation, you stand, slinging your bag over your shoulder and walking towards matt. as you offer your arm to walk him around, you counter his joke, "you know that's not true."
"i know." he takes your arm. "josie's?" the walk to josie's is short—but it eases the nervousness in your heart. this is normal, this is natural, this is something you do all the time.
when you enter josie's, it's only a second before you notice a familiar face sitting at the bar. "oh, my god... matt!"
"hm?"
"i think foggy's on a date." just then, foggy seems to catch a glimpse of you and matt, beckoning you over to meet the girl he's with. he introduces you and matt to sarah. before you can even realize it, you and matt are being roped into playing pool, which you find absurd—they're not exactly equal teams—but go along with anyway. the night seems to go as they always do. you nearly forget that you even have feelings for matt, until you're helping him aim the pool stick, your hands on top of his. you pull away, clearing your throat and watching him hit the cue ball, which just so happens to sink two balls.
foggy walks over, patting him on the back, and you smile to yourself before asking how he's better at pool than you are. the game picks back up, but you can't seem to keep your eyes on the table. moments later, you watch sarah make her way towards the bathroom, and foggy not so subtly asks matt for a condom.
"foggy!" you scold, bringing a finger to your mouth and shushing him. matt chuckles, pulling his wallet out of his pocket and sliding a condom out, handing it to his friend. you can't place the feeling that gives you. not that he does—you think—but if matt's even remotely interested in you, it's so much so that he's carrying protection?
when sarah comes out of the bathroom, she says a quick goodbye to you and matt, letting foggy lead her out of the bar. even with the rushed exit, you don't miss when she says "i always wanted to go on a double date!"
matt seems to wait until he's sure the pair have left to echo her, a humorous smile on his face. "a double date."
"is that what that was?"
"well, that's what sarah thought, so we must've fooled her."
"right as always, murdock." there's a beat of comfortable silence, and you stare at matt for a second before you manage to find just a bit of boldness hidden within you. "you have any more condoms?"
the shock is apparent on his face, and you're about to backtrack, perform some type of damage control when he smirks. "oh, you know, i left the rest at my apartment," he speaks, and he's not even trying to hide the fact that he's trying to get you to go home with him. "so, if you really need it..."
matt tilts his head, far too amused for his own good. "alright, counselor, let's go."
"wow, you really want that condom."
"shut up!"

⋆ˊˎ-•̩̩͙- *̩̩̥͙ DRAW THE CAT EYE SHARP ENOUGH TO KILL A MAN... avengers reality intro!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
┊ ➶ 。˚ ° liliana amore rogers [born sept. 10, 1939] is hydra’s most dangerous creation. i was born in new york city, new york to steven grant rogers & loki laufeydottir. when i was 3, my father became the first ever super soldier. almost 2 years later, he defeats the red skull and ends up stuck in the ice. i was then put into an orphanage and peggy had planned to adopt me, to honor my dad’s wishes to care for me, but before the adoption process could be completed i was kidnapped by hydra. for the next 10+ years, i was experimented on and along with the abilities i was born with, i also gained abilities from the experiments they did on me. in the 1980s, i managed to escape from hydra and went into hiding. in 2012, fury asked me to help & join the avengers and this was my first time meeting my dad again since he was found & taken out of the ice. for the past few years, i’ve been living in the apartment across matt murdock, who’s become one of my best friends. i’d also like to add that i was mind-controlled like bucky (except they never erased my memories) & that i’ve been getting therapy since 1992 with a very trusted therapist. i haven’t killed anyone since escaping hydra and i never will unless absolutely necessary.

༉‧₊˚. steven grant "steve" rogers [born jul. 4, 1918] is the world's first superhero. he was born in new york city, new york to joseph rogers & sarah rogers as an only child. he met my mother in mid-1937 and the two fell in love and started dating in early 1938. when they had me, he was ecstatic. when he went into the ice, the only thing he was thinking of was what was gonna happen to me. when he was pulled out of the ice, he believed me to be dead even though fury refused to confirm or deny. in 2012, i was the one to recruit him for the avengers in place of fury.
༉‧₊˚. loki laufeysdottir [born mar. 2, 965] is the goddess of mischief. she was born on jotunheim as the only daughter of the frost giant king, laufey. she was abandoned in a temple, left to die, and was eventually found by odin who adopted her, using his sorcery to alter her appearance. in 1937, she decided to sneak out of asgard to visit earth. a few months later she ended up meeting my dad and fell in love with his resilience. a few weeks after i was born, she was found and forced to go back to asgard, leaving me & my dad. after the attack on new york, her punishment was to stay on earth and after much convincing from thor, she was given a floor in the avengers tower.
༉‧₊˚. james buchanan "bucky" barnes [born mar. 10, 1917] is the winter soldier. he was born in shelbyville, indiana to jimmy barnes & winnifred barnes as the oldest of 4 children. during his childhood, he moved to new york city and met my dad, the two of them immediately becoming best friends. when i was born, he was made my godfather and helped raise me after my mother was forced to leave. during our time in hydra, he was extremely protective of me even though he had no memories of who i was. after i escaped from hydra, he was tasked with finding me but he purposefully failed.
