snowagumon and digivolution

i don’t think snowagumon would have a wargreymon type digivolution, because of ancientgreymon... in ancientgreymon’s description it says that he gave his flames to the DRAGONS of the greymon-species... dorugreymon (yes, i know this feller is an ultimate), ShineGreymon, wargreymon, blitzgreymon (i, think...), victorygreymon, and Samudramon are the dragons of the greymon species. greymon, blackgreymon, and geogreymon are dinosaurs. metalgreymon, metalgreymon virus, risegreymon, and zekegreymon are cyborgs. All the variants of agumon are reptiles. snowagumon’s mega would likely not be a dragon type, but maybe a dinosaur or cyborg.

So, back when I reviewed Black War Greymon, I mentioned that its X-Antibody form wasn’t actually the original design made for the role. Initially, this Ultimate-level fellow here – Gaioumon – was created as Black War Greymon X-Antibody. However, the Digimon team was so thoroughly enamored with it that they decided to give it its own name and identity separate from Black War Greymon, effectively promoting it into its own digimon unto itself. Which, y’know, understandable. Look at this guy!!! Objectively rad.

Said to have been discovered in a “neglected Oriental computer” (“Oriental”? Really? Who wrotethis????), Gaioumon’s got a solid samurai theme going on. It apparently has an “unbelievable” combat record from its countless battles, and wieldstwo swords known as Kikurin. These swords leave behind tracks of light when swung, known asRinkazan, which cut anything to pieces. Another attack can fuse its swords into a bow to convergethose lights and fire them, known as Rinkageki. The translations I’m getting from the wiki are giving me “Phosphorus” in relation to these attacks, though given its repeated use of the word “eerie”I think the intended motif is something similar to a Will-o-Wisp? It’s also got an attack known as Gaia Reactor, which concentrates energy in the atmosphere and detonates it. This is a variant of Gaia Force, a War Greymon attack that I went over back in Black War Greymon’s review.

But yeah, the main takeaway here is just how phenomenal of a design this is. Digimon has no shortage of dragons, dudes, and dragon dudes – far too many, I might add – but this is perhaps the best dragon dude. The almost-all-black color scheme is slick as hell, only broken up by some gold, silver, and red accents, withthe result feeling very streamlined in spite of how much is going on here. This sketch shows just how much detail the armor actually has, but it still manages to not feel overdesigned. The head is also excellent; although it does owe that partially to War Greymon, I feel Gaioumon pulls off the look far better.

Although noncanon, Gaioumon’s designer As’maria has also done artwork of a “Gaioumon X Burst Mode”. Burst Mode is a relatively underutilized concept that basically signifies an Ultimate-level digimon surpassing the power of the Ultimate-level. I don’t really like the idea of it – I feel this franchise has enough power creep happening constantly as is – but this design’s pretty cool nonetheless. Still, as cool as chest-teeth and fire are, I think I prefer the relative simplicity of the base design.

Gaioumon’s relatively obscure as far as digimon go, but it’s certainly a good one. There’ll probably never be another instance of me getting this hyped about a humanoid dragon digimon, but at least somethinggenuinely good came out of the franchise’s obsession with the archetype.

An addendum to the What if Pokémon protags had Digimon

So apparently Fumamon is a perfect and not an adult 😅. It sure looked like an adult level to me. Also the first time I saw this thing was when I was looking for partners for the protagonists.

Just for fun, i decided to redesign a bunch of old Digis (which i made a bunch of posts showing off all Digimon related sketches on my old notebooks) and make them look better.

I have SO many old Digis that are based off of Kamen Riders; the main riders as Digis, the secondary riders as Digis, the main riders’ forms as digivolutions for the Digimon version, etc! One day i’ll redesign ALL the old Kamen Rider Digis, but for now let’s focus on this one.

This is a Digimon based off of Kamen Rider Gaim, the Rookie form, Shikendramon, can digivolve into Gaimmon using the Lockseeds (yes in this Digimon Kamen Rider AU, the gimmicks are used to Digivolve Digimon, kinda like the Armor Digi-Eggs). To be honest...the old designs look...kinda bad? Like...Gaimmon’s armor is a poor attempt to draw Gaim’s armor, Shikendramon looks kinda bland, and obviously they suffer from “thin looks syndrome”.

For the redesign, i changed the rookie form’s appearance and made Gaimmon look somewhat close to Gaim but with a Digimon touch to it. Though Gaimmon keeps his name (obviously), his rookie form gets a new name, being Samudramon.

It's really tragic that Yuuko's machinedramon didn't recognized her and Yuuko was forced to fight against her own partner...One she had for such a long time and delete it....I bet that wasn't easy for her to do ,but at least she still had Rizegraymon. In which evolved into Samudramon..

It'll really break Yuuko even more if her Rizegraymon didn't recognized her too...Thankfully it did
