Chikara’s showroom looked old but cuter than Sakura’s. The mochi and manju in display cases and there was another display case of Japanese cultural items. The price of the manju and mochi varies from $1.89 for plain mochi to $5 for strawberry cream mochi. They also have baked buns like an pan and pumpkin.

The mochi master is truly an artisan. Some of the mochi looked like oranges, apples, strawberries, persimmon, etc. They had interesting flavors like chrysanthemum and persimmon. Then there were the mochi types inspired by snow and first frost. Artsy! They make the best looking mochi that I’ve ever seen.

Sweet potato (imomanju): totally looks like a sweet potato including the skin, filled with lima beans (smooth bean paste); the bean paste was drier and less sweet than Sakura-Ya’s. Chikara also used less cinnamon.

Chestnut manju: Beautiful – looked just like a chestnut. Wheat cake filled with a paste of lima beans, chestnuts, and cinnamon. Less sweet and a bit drier than Sakura’s

Coffee mochi: Topped with coffee jelly and almonds, the mochi was tender and soft but I couldn’t taste much coffee flavor in the white bean paste

Pumpkin anpan

Each piece was individually wrapped and the tray was also wrapped in plastic with a thank you sticker. Cash only.

Does anyone else think about how Sakura was so excited and FRIENDLY to Suo when he thought he was a foreigner? If I had to count how often I think about that I'd say I'm never not thinking about it.

He introduced himself so POLITELY. Even tried to accommodate him by greeting him in English. He was so fuckin stoked thinking he was being kind to a foreigner.

(I'm also always thinking about how he got out the "I am-" and the part he got stuck at was his name my booooyyyy 😭)

In Gardena, there are two wagashi shops on the same block and the same side of the street: Sakura-ya and Chikara. The shops both look old and they both make manju and mochi by hand. They even have similar types of manju and mochi.

Sakura-ya’s manju and mochi look nice but aren’t as fancy and pretty as Chikara’s. They also had fewer varieties. Each piece is $2.80 and they don’t seem to provide a quantity discount.

I tried a few pieces of Chikara and Sakura-ya side by side and Sakura’s were consistently sweeter and moister than Chikara’s. Chikara’s were prettier and tasted more natural and subtle.

Sweet potato (imomanju) manju: looks like sweet potato, baked manju (wheat shell) filled with mashed smooth white beans, pretty sweet but good, strong cinnamon note

Chestnut (kuri manju): not chestnut shaped but oblong in shape, pretty brown color on top, more moist, sweeter, smooth white bean filling and baked wheat cake exterior

Orange mochi cube: made with rice flour, the cube was soft, sweet, tender but the orange flavor didn’t taste natural

Sakura-ya has been making mochi and manju fresh daily since 1960. The shop has no seating. Service was friendly. Cash or check only.

Naruto: Huh?! What’s he gonna do? I don’t think Taijutsu works on them, dattebayo!

Gai: How can I help, Kakashi?

Kakashi: Sing.

Gai: … what?!

Kakashi: Remember earlier this summer, when I told you that singing to your plants can help them grow?

Gai: Yes, but when I sang to mine, they all withered and died!

Kakashi: Exactly. SING.

Gai:

Gai: *opens his mouth and starts belting out a very a loud, screechy, out-of-tune “song”*

The Zetsu clones: *one by one they shriek and fall to the ground, dead*

Naruto, hands over ears: Way to go, Bushy-Brows Sensei!

Sakura, eyes painfully watering: Who knew we had such a deadly weapon among us!

Kakashi: *kisses Gai* Fantastic work!

Gai:

Gai: Well, this isn’t exactly the war hero story I wanted to tell our future children, but …
