In Gardena, there are two wagashi shops on the same block and the same side of the street: Sakura-ya and Chikara. The shops both look old and they both make manju and mochi by hand. They even have similar types of manju and mochi.

Sakura-ya’s manju and mochi look nice but aren’t as fancy and pretty as Chikara’s. They also had fewer varieties. Each piece is $2.80 and they don’t seem to provide a quantity discount.

I tried a few pieces of Chikara and Sakura-ya side by side and Sakura’s were consistently sweeter and moister than Chikara’s. Chikara’s were prettier and tasted more natural and subtle.

Sweet potato (imomanju) manju: looks like sweet potato, baked manju (wheat shell) filled with mashed smooth white beans, pretty sweet but good, strong cinnamon note

Chestnut (kuri manju): not chestnut shaped but oblong in shape, pretty brown color on top, more moist, sweeter, smooth white bean filling and baked wheat cake exterior

Orange mochi cube: made with rice flour, the cube was soft, sweet, tender but the orange flavor didn’t taste natural

Sakura-ya has been making mochi and manju fresh daily since 1960. The shop has no seating. Service was friendly. Cash or check only.

so long story short, i went to the post office

and it turned out to be the wrong post office lol

so i ran a bunch of errands and then found the RIGHT post office

which means

i got my package!!!!!!

On 5/19/24, we said goodbye to Mochi…

She was part of our family for 13 years and 11 months. As the parent who really wanted an animal family member, I knew she was going to be my responsibility, and happily so. As the years passed, where I was, she was. She was my shadow, and in a way, an extension of myself. Her passing was/is extremely difficult 💔

On 6/20, I decided to adopt a dog from a local, overcrowded animal shelter…

This is Kiko! At only 1 1/2 years (I’ve given her 12/13/22 as her DOB @taylorswift ), she was on the day to day euthanasia list due to the overcrowding that unfortunately many animal shelters are forced to face. She’s the sweetest little girl, and after just 3 days, she is adjusting to our family perfectly 🥰

Kiko…mochi (the food) is really called mochiko in Japan...so similarly Kiko follows after Mochi ❤️ Kiko also means hope ❤️ Although many say we saved her, I know she’s saving me in return … ADOPT DON’T SHOP ❤️

Dude I had Vietnamese iced coffee with ube foam from a local coffee/donut shop today and it was one of the most banging cups of coffee I've ever had in my life god it was so fucking good

The way Asian snacks are so amazing

I will be having taro boba with some mochis and just fully experience a different life from having tea or coffee with some cake

It really opened my mind

I think the squishy chewy texture is really missing from European snacks

Also they use so many unique flavors like taro, jellies, puddings, cheese foam, matcha, sesame paste, it seems like we only have chocolate, vanilla, caramel

They go wild out there. There's a boba place near where I live now and you can literally put the entire boba together on a computer screen in the shop LOL like, sugar level, inside, tea, toppings, then you can get a mochi or a rice thing and experience an entire world of new sensations for like 5 euro. The lady even gave me a big rice, seaweed thing with salmon for free for no reason meanwhile I go to a European cafe, 15-25 euro for the same old thing.
