Saint Anastasia of Sirmium 275 - 303 Feast Day: December 25 Patronage: weavers, widows, martyrs, those suffering from poison
Saint Anastasia the Pharmakolytria, “Deliverer from Potions” was a Roman citizen. Her father was a pagan but her Christian mother secretly baptized and raised her Christian. St. Chrysogonus was also her teacher and advisor. After her mother’s death, her father gave her in marriage to a noble Roman named Publius, a pagan who abused her after he found out she was Christian. After Publius's untimely death she distributed her property to the poor and visited and cared for Christian prisoners. She was captured, imprisoned, condemned to death and burned alive during the Diocletian persecution. She is one of the 7 women mentioned in the Canon of the Mass and in Rome today, the second Christmas Mass is celebrated at St. Anastasia parish. {website}

Your Future In-Laws First Impression of You
Pile 1 🪸 Pile 2 🛩️ Pile 3 ☔️
Notes:
This reading covers Your future in-laws (married or long-term partner) first impression of you as well as how they receive you. It's purely for entertainment purposes only. Take what only what resonates be it some, all or none.
I've been feeling mildly scatterbrained when it comes to organising my thoughts and I didn't have the mental capacity to design any graphics. Hopefully, this reading is still clear though.

PILE 1
What do they think of you?
Cards: Cat’s Claw (Purification), Lion’s Mane (Leadership), Lavender (Weaver), Ace of Swords, King of Cups, Four of Swords
Your in-laws first impression of you is one of being impressed and intrigued. From the cards pulled (including the next section) it feels like your future in-laws will be a very tight-knit family, so your future long-term partner/spouse introducing you is very much a big deal. I feel like it could be at a family gathering or you’re invited to an important event where you meet them there. You could give off the impression of being very regal and revered. I think your future in-laws will be very satisfied with you and see you as exactly what they want for their child/relative. They could also be cautious of you in the sense that you may give off the energy of calm but not to be messed with. They could view you as someone who is very balanced energetically. You could give off an enticing blend of masculine and feminine qualities.
You could also give off the impression of someone whose intelligence comes from observing a situation first. The only card that didn’t quite 'blend' as seamlessly initially for me here is the Four of Swords. You could give off a very unfazed vibe at times… or seem as though you’re uninterested in what’s going on all while simultaneously being on high alert. It could come from past experiences though that leaves you this way and I think your in-laws will be able to pick up on that as well. For others, you could just have this attractive, leadership energy and your in-laws' first impression of you could be “This person is great, but they sound like they need to rest.”
How will they receive you? Cards: Tobacco (Offering) , Arnica (Teacher), Saint John’s Wort (Radiance), Death, Six of Pentacles, The Hermit reversed
Your future in-laws will receive you with open arms. Right off the bat they’re going to take you in and share with you their wisdom and their love. Even if you and your in-laws may have differences, they’ll show you from the start that they are willing to get to know who you are and build a relationship with you. For them, your presence welcomes the start of a new beginning in their family. I feel like your in-laws may be very traditional but also open. They will want to help nurture you. For some of you, they may give a physical gift for you or offer you an opportunity of some kind.
PILE 2
What do they think of you? Cards: Rosemary (ancient memory), Gingko (breakthrough), Psilocybin (commune), Knight of Cups, Two of Swords, The Emperor, Knight of Wands
If you were drawn to pile 1, you could consider checking out that pile as well after.
I don’t know if you’re sleepy or what pile 2, but something to do with sleep is coming through for you. I figured maybe some of you may meet your in-laws at night, for others you may have an intense intellectual energy and it’s like “Wow, does this person ever sleep?” Your in-laws may see you as someone charming, playful or good fun, but overall super focused and fixated on a specific thing. For some of you, you may not have the best social skills? You might say things that catch them off guard, but I don’t think they’ll think less of you for it. Your person could have a big family, so there may be many in-laws you meet. They definitely see you as committed to what you set your mind to and that when you make a decision about something, it’s not one you make lightly. You give your all to projects and people. They may see you as a visionary, someone with lots of wisdom and brilliant ideas. I think that you might even influence them, if not completely change their perspective on a matter. If there are children around you may interact with them well, almost like a mentor and I think your future in-laws will be pleased with that. You may not directly interact with them when they form their first impression of you, they may simply observe you from a distance. For others, it could be that you flit back and forth between intellectual intensity that makes you seem older than you are one minute and embodying a child-like sense of wonder and whimsiness that makes you see younger the next.
How will they receive you? Cards: Rose (love), Cannabis (detachment), Tulsi (wealth), 10 of Cups, Page of Swords, 6 of Wands
*If you’re struggling with anxiety or sleep, there’s a message here to take time and care around cultivating inner calm. Quick fixes might do more harm than good currently.
There’s not one uniform energy here, like I mentioned before, it feels like various people I’m picking up on (so forgive me if this feels slightly scattered). For some, they might seem a little bit detached or unexpressive but they like you. It could be that they quite honestly didn’t want to like you but they do, or the initial getting to know one another might be rocky before you finally get to a point where it's like "yeah, y/n is pretty great.". Regardless, you’ll feel welcomed and you’ll be received with grace. I’m also picking up on some may want to get on your good side because they see you as someone successful or capable of great success so they may try to wow you. They may want to learn from you as well. I definitely pick up on someone seeking you out in hopes that you’ll teach them about something. They may welcome you by striking up a conversation.
PILE 3
What do they think of you? Cards: Palo Santo (Guardian), Jergón Sacha (Transfiguration), Chamomile (Inner Peace) reversed Four of Wands reversed, Ace of Swords, Two of Wands
It's not quite clear who's energy is what but I did my best. I think both you and your future in-laws may kind of flip back and forth feeling the same way about each other because I did pull some cards to represent your impression of your in-laws and was getting the same vibes and their impression of you.
There are multiple scenarios here so I split it up into bullet points.
Your future in-laws might need a minute to process who you are (aesthetic/interest-wise). (I also got they may need a couple years to come to terms with you? 😭 However, editing this it could have been that it took them a while to come to terms with their child/relative's type?)
I think you take everything they expect and flip it on their head, for better or worse.
I don’t sense any malice, but I definitely think that they may feel slightly avoidant of you at first? I don’t know why but I keep envisioning when you watch those movies and there’s someone coming over and the couple is in a panic and trying to act natural… I’m not sure that makes sense, but that’s what I keep getting. It’s not like 'Oh, we don’t like this person’. It’s more of an "X is coming and I didn’t have enough time to mentally prepare’. Some people just have a big personality, and even if you do like them you just kind of need to prepare yourself for them still 😅
For some of you, it could be that they’re worried you’ll lead their child/relative down a path they don’t agree with??? There’s fear here and the words aren’t coming out right because your in-laws like I said may not be able to immediately process you. I just get this weary sense, and that they know well enough there is no need to be weary of you.
Another possibility that comes to me is your person/future spouse may have also been one of those kids that leave their parents stressed 24/7 (like my sister), so your future in-laws try to run every scenario through their head trying to prepare themselves for what their child's partner could be like. They could also be relieved that you’re nothing like what they expected.
It could also be that they could feel like you’re the one who's guarded and has a wall up, or you’re anxious about meeting them and they pick up on that?
How will they receive you? Cards: Ashwagandha (purpose), Ginseng (magician), Sage (blessing), Mandrake (sensuality) The Magician, The Hierophant, Queen of Swords
While I was pulling the cards, “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan suddenly started ‘playing’ in my head. Your future in-laws may kind of see you as their pet project of sorts. Not like you need fixing in any way, you might just seem like a good candidate for something one or both of your in-laws have in mind. Good or bad thing that’s on a case-by-case basis. You’ve got the hierophant and magician and for whatever reason, the imagery especially kind of put that in my head. They may have certain rules or values that they will communicate are important to them. Those two cards, as well as the queen of swords, are all holding an item and I heard a 'talking stick'?? Maybe it means something to someone or maybe I just need to rest lol. I think your in-laws will do their best to form a relationship with you. One thing that definitely feels evident is that they will know you’re their child/relative's person. Their initial feelings from their impression of you may completely switch when it comes to interacting with you. They’ll put a genuine effort into getting to know you, and not just a courtesy get-to-know-you type of interaction. They genuinely want to connect with you and understand you. They’ll try to release any preconceived notions towards you and they may even verbalise this as well.

Pentiment's Complete Bibliography, with links to some hard-to-find items:
I've seen some people post screenshots of the game's bibliography, but I hadn't found a plain text version (which would be much easier to work from), so I put together a complete typed version - citation style irregularities included lol. I checked through the full list and found that only four of the forty sources can't be found easily through a search engine. One has no English translation and I'm not even close to fluent enough in German to be able to actually translate an academic article, so I can't help there. For the other three (a museum exhibit book, a master's thesis, and portions of a primary source that has not been entirely translated into English), I tracked down links to them, which are included with their entries on the list.
If you want to read one of the journal articles but can't access it due to paywalls, try out 12ft.io or the unpaywall browser extension (works on Firefox and most chromium browsers). If there's something you have interest in reading but can't track down, let me know, and I can try to help! I'm pretty good at finding things lmao
Okay, happy reading, love you bye

Some lore tabs that killed me dead and I'll never recover from them. Seasonal gauntlets are about Zavala realising and coming to terms with the fact that he is mortal and has mortal pains. Also, finally, the full confirmation that Guardians resume aging when they lose their Light:
He moved his chair back and considered his knee. What had he done to hurt it? He had not exercised yet, he had not gone on his usual patrol… he had done nothing. Why would a knee hurt from doing nothing? The riddle dissolved. He was starting to age.
But also:
He allows a hand to rest on his aching knee. To venerate it. He feels it solid under his palm. It is his, it is real, it is both portentous and precious. He is aging. He will age. An absurd and joyous thought warms in his chest: how fortunate, to have lived long enough to grow old. How invaluable, to make the space between himself and the horizon matter. How much time is left? And is it best spent with his knees under a desk?
Genuinely crying over this. How fortunate to live long enough to grow old. Man. Also at the end he asks for a break for one week and Ikora offers him two weeks.
The next one just... I have no words. It has to be read in full. It's about Saint going through it, having memories of his past and also dealing with the guilt with what's happening to Mithrax. Truly every sentence in this one is a gutpunch all the way to the end. Excerpts:
The hum of activity was overpowering yet reassuring to Saint-14 as he stopped to watch an older Eliksni expertly weave fabric on a well-worn loom. The woven symbols were unique and unfamiliar to the Exo, but he watched in awe as an iridescent glow emerged within the vibrant cerulean cloth. Fit for a Kell, Saint mused to himself— Breath caught in his throat; hands shook— Flashes of memory echoed in his mind. All he could feel in this moment… was shame.
Saint remembering his crimes against the Eliksni and feeling shame.
He hurried past the weaver and through the crowd, landing squarely in front of a tea stand, a sample placed in his hand before he could open his mouth to refuse. He looked down. The opaque liquid steamed in his cup, pungent and medicinal. Like distilled Darkness, Saint realized— Breath caught in his throat; hands shook— Flashes of memory filled his sight. All he could feel in this moment… was sadness.
Tea reminded him of all the stuff with Osiris and he is not processing it well. I say excerpts but I have to put the rest entirely because like. Okay.
Saint placed his favorite keepsake, a small stuffed bear, on the Kell's throne. Gently, he adjusted the lavender ribbon at its neck; the crisp satin sat in stark contrast to the bear's hazy black eyes, to its slightly worn ear and well-loved fur. A gift, once a comfort to a child of the City. A gift, once a comfort to Saint in the face of loss, in the face of— Breath caught in his throat; hands shook— Flashes of memory swelled in his heart. Osiris. His strong laugh. His deep, soulful eyes. The warmth of his smile. Of his touch. Memories of comfort, but all he could feel in this moment… was guilt. Intense and overwhelming, like daggers cutting through him, sharpness bleeding through sweetness. Saint breathed deeply and stared at the medical equipment around the empty throne before him. "The cost of my joy," Saint whispered, and he wept.
He has a teddy bear. He once gave it to a child, but someone returned it to him when he was grieving about Osiris, to comfort him, and he'd kept it. And he put it on Mithrax's throne because he feels guilt that Mithrax is suffering because he helped him and Osiris.
I'm ending it all.
#destiny 2#destiny 2 spoilers#revenant#revenant spoilers#zavala#saint-14#osiris#mithrax#long post#i can't handle this#started reconsidering reading and being interested in lore after this#i'm just sitting here. who wrote this#these two lore tabs destroyed me#'the cost of my joy' saint loves mithrax so much it's unreal how much he can't handle that mithrax suffers essentially because of him#mithrax spent a lot of time with saint and they became absolute besties so saint thinks that mithrax felt compelled to help with osiris#and now he suffers for it and saint feels guilty. but he also feels guilty because what would be alternative. osiris forever in a coma?#saint basically having to choose between osiris and cursing mithrax and he feels bad because obviously it's osiris for him#but at what cost?#i'm about to lose it all seriously i'm gonna eat my walls

💌Someone wants to reach out!
Trigger warning : this reading mentions the passing of beings and other sensitive subjects. It is way heavier than I intended and I want to make sure that you know what you get yourself into. If you are underage, refrain from reading this post. If you know that you are sensitive to such subjects, refrain from reading as well, as a security measure.
As this is going to be a very detailed reading, I only put two options to choose from. To help you identify if you picked the right group, I will use some letters to try to get keywords as confirmation signs. In this reading, we are first going to try to identify who is trying to reach out to you. Then, we will find out what they wish to say to you. At the end of your reading, you will get a short advice from your guides. For this PAC I will be using letters, the White Numen tarot and the Threads of fate oracle, as well as some self made tissue box messages.
Group 1
Note from reader : As I was doing the last adjustments of your reading, I looked up at the sky through my window and looked at the clouds. That might be something the person we're talking about used to do a lot. In the shape of the clouds I saw many N and a few A. Those might be significant initials.
Letters : M F T I U A S N E M R S C V U Keywords : Mass, rain, Insta, star, rats, Cain, museum, amuse, Muse, cinema, mics, revue (French for magazine), fame, Reita, Sumire, saint, Cirus, Marcus, Mars, trains, Venus, arts, man, versus, Mantis, fumer (French for smoking), fast, cars, music, rants, Francis, frantic, France, matsuri (Japanese for festival), mister fun, musc, sister, fan, Ventura, Messi, faint, vain, veins, Traum (German for dream), stairs, Uranus, Saturn, Vermin, races, fire, Aries, Uranium, Taurus
Who is trying to reach out?
Creative soul | Unusual talent | Singer | Heterochromia | Earth angel | 5th house personal creativity I SERVE | 2 of pentacles, 7 of cups, page of swords, The Void, The Weaver, The Revolutionary
Okay I know this is going to sound crazy but I picked up on Moonbin. I can't explain why as I didn't know him very well. But I thought of him as soon as I wrote that channeled message you are gonna read in the next section. Aside from that, I can definitely tell that whoever is trying to reach out to you has passed on. This person was full of life and ideas, there were many things they wanted to say and do but they didn't get the chance to give life to all their dreams. They were young. Very young. This person wanted to fight the darkness and be a ray of hope in a world of doom. They had great ambitions and though they were battling their own demons, they truly believed in good and wanted to be good. They believed that they could weave their destiny as they wanted and that they could change the world if they tried real hard. They wanted to leave a positive impact around them. Heal the world. I'm also picking up on Michael Jackson energy. Maybe you or this person was a Michael Jackson fan. They may have been misunderstood by people around them when they were living. Maybe they were made fun of as a child because of their peculiar personality and talents. Maybe this person saw or did things that people didn't believe in or were afraid of. They were the first in their family to be like that. Maybe they were the first to be queer or the first that had a special talent that was deemed out of the ordinary. Could have been an artistic talent but also something related to the unseen. Maybe they could sense ghosts or they had downloads about specific events. They could have been the first to break from the family patterns and traditions. Like maybe in this person's family people were carpenters or automobile constructors from father to son and they chose to be an artist instead. I'm drawn to the snake on the Weaver card. Maybe snakes were important to this person. Like it is a symbol that represents them or this could be their chinese zodiac sign. Years of the snake are 1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 or 2013 and the next one will be 2025. But more than zodiac, I feel like they related to snakes in the sense that these animals are often feared and viewed as negative when they are neither good nor bad. They hold the potential for both and will only be "bad" if you threaten them. The reason I got drawn to the snake is because I know of an artist that passed on whose clothing brand logo was a snake. If any of you are familiar with The GazettE, I'm talking about Reita and his brand SNAKEDLOWS. Especially the one with the Ouroboros that was used in 2022. If you don't resonate with any of these artists, this could have been a family member, whether you knew them during their lifetime or not.
What they want to say to you :
"Dear love, I cannot stress enough how much I love you. You lit up my life in so many ways. I can never thank you enough for the support and love you have given me over the years. I owe so much to you. I was able to live a good life because of you. Please allow me to return the favor by being your n° 1 fan from now on <3 Fighting!"

They are trapped in a state of limbo and they want to connect with you to be free. But they also want to help you set yourself free from patterns and obligations that you don't resonate with anymore. You are lying to yourself about the state you are in. You keep working and working without taking into account how you feel. Your life has become more of a routine and less of an adventure. You closed your heart to favor your mind. It's like you no longer marvel at life and try to run from your truth. They want to connect with you because they don't want you to do the same mistakes as them and ignore the signs that you are not okay. They want to help you ground yourself into an environment and a state of being that is healthy. Behind the Void hides Get curious. Behind the king of pentacles hides the knight of cups. They want you to be curious about love again. To open your heart again. To fight for your happiness because they don't want you to know the same fate as them. It's like they're saying "there are things I wish I knew sooner because if I'd known them maybe I wouldn't have had as hard of a time as I did". "If I'd known, I'd have told people how I felt. Maybe I would have been saved from my own sorrow. I don't want you to drown in your feelings like I did". There's a theme of mental health issues, suicidal tendencies and/or abuse from close circle like family members, friends. It's like this person in their life time chose to prioritize their job and the well being of others to the detriment of their own health and emotional security. They withheld information, pretended that they were fine when they were not. They hid behind their success and their career and most likely worked themselves until it was too much for them to handle.
Advice from your guides - 3 of swords, the world, The Pillar, Ask Body
Don't isolate yourself and remain in your anger or sadness. Speak up to somebody, reach out, open your heart to the world. There are other people who share your pain and doubts, who will be able to relate to what you go through and help you on your journey. Strengthen your body but also pay attention to the signs it is sending you. If you feel unusual pain, pay attention to it. Your third eye is opening. You are becoming more sensitive to spirit and other's emotions. So make sure you build strong enough walls to protect yourself from spiritual attacks. Ask your guides for help if you feel like you can't rely on anyone. Spend time in contemplation and prayer. The spirit of the cheetah is here to remind you that it's important to save your energy and only spend it for what matters. You need to find your center back instead of dispersing your energy in many projects at a time. "It is not unusual for the Cheetah Spirit Animal to come as a guide and support for people who have intense feelings. If you are empathetic, Cheetah reminds you it’s okay and healthy to cry. It releases all the excess input bumping around in your aura while cleansing and decreasing stress. Pause for a moment. Cry and then give yourself something wonderful afterward." You are asked to slow down and take time to let your emotions be expressed instead of repressing them. [Source : what is my spiritanimal]

I get two possibilities for this group. Some of you could have a passed on ancestor / parent trying to contact you. For others, this person is living but you are not in contact with them at the moment. In both cases, I get this feeling of communication being blocked. It's as if you refuse to be in contact with them or you delay the moments when you are in contact with them. No matter the situation, you are taking refuge in your work as a way to avoid them. This person could be a soulmate and/or someone from your childhood. I get the feeling of a dynamic between someone that is quite old and someone that is quite young. Like a clash of generations. This is just one example between many but think of a parent and their child or a mentor and their protégé. This person could have had a higher status than yours. Aside from the careers mentioned by the tissue box messages I also sense law enforcement, military, politics. Positions of authority in general. It's like you've created a bubble around you and you stay in that bubble. No matter how hard this person is trying to reach out, their attempts are cut short by the distance between you. It's like you voluntarily keep them at bay. I feel a lot of sadness and worry coming from them. It feels like they're afraid that they can't help you. They can sense that something is troubling you and they wish to help you in any way they can but you refuse their help. They feel lonely and left out. It saddens them to see that you don't seem to trust them as much as you used to. They understand and recognize your need for space and independance, your passion and goals, your personal legend. But they also wish that you would let them be a part of it, let them in into your world and give them the opportunity to contribute to it even just a little. More than anything they want to reconnect with you and go back to lighter and innocent moments, where you share memories and try to build a future together. This doesn't have to be a romantic thing. Actually I feel more of a parental vibe than a romantic one. But of course it's going to vary depending on people so for some it could be a romantic partner that is/was very protective of you and kind of acted as a parental figure.
What they want to say to you :
"My child, you need not to cry. Our fate isn't one to worry about. I cry for all of you who are here on Earth, who do not know the taste of true love. I cry for my brothers and sisters who still have to fight the same battles, though I've fought them before. I wish I could heal the world. I wish I could heal you too. <3"
Complementary info - Underworld, Seeker rx, Paradox, The Revolutionary, knight of pentacles, 3 of pentacles, knight of pentacles, Judgement
They wish that instead of giving a lot of attention to others you would allow yourself to receive help and attention from them. That you would stop keeping them at bay and let them show you a new perspective, a different way of doing things. That you would let them pave the way a little more for you and shed light onto other paths, other skills, other people that could be helpful. They want to find a common ground with you and create something stable, fruitful. They want to team up with you in order to restore balance in your life. If some of you are facing legal matters or have been wronged, they want to help you get retribution. They wish you wouldn't be so hard on yourself and stop fighting your battles alone. It's like they're saying "it doesn't have to be just you against the whole world, you don't even have to fight if you don't want to ; if you truly want it, let me stand by your side". For a lot of you this concerns your career or your studies. They wish that you would share your load with them. They wish that you would come to them for advice instead of trying to save them the worry because they're going to worry anyway so they might as well worry with you. They wish that you wouldn't be so harsh on them and judge them so harshly. You underestimate this person's ability to understand you. They wish to say "I've been there to and I know how you feel". They want to let you know that you are not alone, they fully support you in your decisions and choices. They're ready to fight for and with you. All they need is your command. They're saying "tell me what you need and I'll be getting it for you, tell me your fears and I'll send them away". Just one word from you and they will serve justice. There's also a theme about prayer, similarily to group 1. I heard "God is mighty and if you ask you shall receive". I know religion is a touchy subject so I don't want to force beliefs on anyone but if that is something you resonate with then they encourage you to keep going and turn to God for help.
Advice from your guides - Death, Versatility rx, page of cups, 4 of swords
They want you to take rest and do things that you enjoy. You may want to get your health checked. Put an end to connections and habits that are detrimental to you.

Saint Paul the Hermit 227-342 Feast day: January 15 Patronage: basket weavers, clothing industry, hermits, weavers
Saint Paul the Hermit, also called Paul of Thebes, a well educated Egyptian, was the first Christian hermit, embracing the life of solitude and penance. He fled to the desert to circumvent the Christian persecution of Decius and from plans of his brother to report him to authorities to gain control of his property. Paul lived as a vegetarian, using the leaves of a Palm tree for clothing. It’s said that a raven supplied him with bread. St. Anthony of Egypt was good friends with him and buried him, wrapped in a cloak given by St. Athanasius. St. Jerome wrote his biography.

WHELP I saw Alien: Romulus, (spoilers possible in comments!!), but I have to say I do NOT understand the hype for this movie. It was worse than Covenant, which I didn't think was possible. It felt like AI had a HEAVY hand in it, from script to the terrible deep fake character that was animated in the movie (WHYYYY?). Toward the end I was just laughing at how ridiculous it was, especially the nonsensical use of the famous line from Aliens. One really *good* thing about it, though, the actor that played Andy, David Jonsson-- by far the BEST thing in the movie. Incredible job with his role, I look forward to seeing him in more! Anyway, I like Alien/Aliens, and Sigourney Weaver is all, so here's my original Saint Ripley costume!

Ooh things just got so interesting with that post from courtofmaas and your post prompted me to perform quick research.
1. Below the Edge of Darkness explores bioluminescence, which of course only truly manifests in the dark. In my research, it’s described as “cold light” as it produces less than 20% heat. Most of this light manifests as blue-green but, depending on the organism, can be in the red or yellow spectrum as well. The enzyme that compels the chemical reaction is called LUCIFERIN. Light that is emitted by certain fungi when decaying wood is called foxfire. The main uses for bioluminescence is to: hunt prey, defend against predators, and find mates. I think SJM is doing research on this bc the love “triangle” b/w Elain, Az, and Lucien.
2. The Once and Future Sex discusses the breaking of the mold of medieval women and essentially is a case study. VERY INTERESTINGLY, two of the women discussed are Eleanor of Aquitaine and Hildegard of Bingen. Eleanor was a queen and well known for learning the art of diplomacy and power brokering and demanding a divorce against the king, I’m sure among other things, illustrating the important of women life on their own terms. Hildegard of Bingen played the harp, was a nun (I’m not sure if canonized a saint, but the process had at least been started) and was well known for having “visions.” In retrospective studies, it’s believed that the visions were interpretations of auras that she saw while experiencing migraine headaches. She stood for mercy, peace, and love.
Elain’s book is 100% next. Azriel and Lucien will both play important roles in this book as accessories to her personal growth, but truly, it seems to me that light shines best in the dark. Like bioluminescence. And I can’t wait for the discussion on women’s roles in society and how Elain is going to break the mold.
Thank you so much for sharing all of this information and your excitement with me. 🥰 While those books could just be topics Sarah is interested in, it is fun to consider how they apply to her writing.
Bioluminescence is really fascinating to me, and given how important light is in all her series, I think it makes sense for Sarah to be exploring that topic (for fun and for research). One light that she returns to repeatedly in her writing is Hope, as @psychologynerd and I were discussing the other day.
Hope is the only light that shines in the Void. The scene where that light of Hope is explained is thematically important, and it shows up in each sister’s journey and the friends they surround themselves with. When Elain asks about that light, the weaver explains:
The weaver explained to my sister, “I made it after I mastered Void.”
I stared at the black fabric that was like peering into a pit of hell. And then stared at the iridescent, living silver thread that cut through it, bright despite the darkness that devoured all other light and color. (acofas)
Hope is living light, just like bioluminescence is living light. It requires characters to face darkness, no matter what it is (a feeling, power, or place). When asked how she did it, the weaver goes on to explain:
“I have to create, or it was all for nothing. I have to create, or I will crumple up with despair and never leave my bed. I have to create because I have no other way to voice this.” Her hand rested on her heart, and my eyes burned. “It is hard,” the weaver said, her stare never leaving mine, “and it hurts, but if I were to stop, if I were to let this loom or spindle go silent…” She broke my gaze at last to look at her tapestry. “Then there would be no hope shining in the Void.” (acofas)
Since Hope is living light, it should be no surprise that it is connected to creation (and, in my interpretation, Wyrd—the mother to all, cauldron of life, and weaver of fate, and no I don’t get tired of saying that 😂). And it is no surprise that each sister engages in creation in various ways, especially Elain. She was pulled from her black pit of despair, a void, by Azriel when he figured out she was a seer. She began to create again soon after this scene with Nuala and Cerridwen, her newfound friends. And her first plan post-war is to build and restore gardens, bringing more life and beauty and joy to the world around her. She creates even though it is hard and her heart still hurts.
Beyond the clear theme of Hope and Void, I think it also has implications for Elain’s gifts. Elain’s strength lies in her ability to see life and beauty and joy where others cannot.
In dark and decaying things.
In scarred hands.
This strength is one of the reasons many of us think she was gifted with such powers, including access to a murky realm where dream and reality entwine. I’ve talked about how that murky realm might mimic the black depths of the Cauldron, which is the darkness of both a womb and a void (which now makes sense, knowing what we do about how the Asteri warped it). @offtorivendell and others have discussed the need for darkness in order to see light, and the same is true for bioluminescence. Sometimes, you have to turn out the lights to see the light and life around you.
I think that might be true for Elain’s gifts, especially when she is tracking down someone or something (she closes her eyes to look across the world, like mystics seem to do in CC). It would make sense that this power might be connected to tracking life in the darkness of her sight. Those with earthen magic are also able to sense natural channels of magic (ie, ley lines) in the world. They become uncomfortable in places where those channels are warped and the natural magic of the world cannot flow freely, restricting access to their life-giving magic. Many of us believe Elain was gifted this kind of magic, and it would explain her physical discomfort and deathly complexion in the Hewn City, where channels of the earth’s natural magic, of life. have clearly been warped.
This book could also have supported Sarah’s writing of adventures outside of Elain’s murky realm, in the very depths of the earth…where it is also as dark as the Cauldron. Like this sequence:
Bryce knew it wasn’t endless only because far, far below, water roared. A large subterranean river, if the sound was this loud even up here. Bits of spray floated from the darkness, the damp air laced with a thick, metallic scent—iron. There must have been deposits of it down here.
Nesta said with equal quiet, “That bridge is the perfect place for an ambush.”
“From who?” Bryce hissed.
“I haven’t lived long enough to know every horror in this world, but I can tell you that dark places tend to breed dark things. Especially ones as old and forgotten as this.”
-
Then Bryce’s star illuminated the rock framing the tunnel’s mouth.
She ran.
A teeming mass of things crusted the entrance, smaller than the beasts beneath the dungeon, but almost worse. Cruder, more leathery. Like some sort of primordial bat-lizard hybrid. Black tongues tasted the air between flesh-shredding, clear teeth. Like the kristallos, bred and raised for eons in darkness—
A few of the creatures leapt, swooping into the void below, off on the hunt—
The tunnel, the bridge, rumbled.
Bryce staggered, the drop looming sickeningly closer, and a white wave of panic blinded every sense—
Training and Fae grace caught her, and Bryce could have wept with relief that she hadn’t tumbled into that void. Especially as something massive and slimy lurched from below, the size of two city buses.
An enormous worm, gleaming with water and mud. A mouth full of rows of teeth opened wide and snapped— Bryce fell back on her ass as the worm caught three of the flying lizards between those teeth. Swallowed them all in one bite.
Her starlight flared, casting the whole cavern in light and shadow.
The creatures on the walls screeched—either at the worm or the light—flapping off their perches and right into the creature’s opening jaws. Another snapping bite, river water and metallic-reeking mud spraying with the movement, and more vanished down the worm’s throat.
Bryce could only stare.
-
Her eyes swept over Bryce in a warrior’s wary assessment. “What manner of power is it that you possess? What sort of light is this?”
Bryce slowly shook her head. “Light. Just … light.” Strange, terrible light from another world, she’d once been told.
From this world.
-
They crossed a stream, wide enough to be a river, but shallow and rocky all the way across. Her blazing star, thankfully, pointed to the tunnel on the other side. No swimming necessary this time. As they crossed, the star illuminated slimy white creatures slithering out of their path. Bryce reined in the urge to cringe down at them. Or at the iron-rich water scent that stuffed itself up her nose. She said, if only to distract herself from the gross fauna of the stream, “Did the Fae make these tunnels?”
Bryce’s starlight in the darkest depths of the earth has a few different purposes, including lighting her path and repelling certain creatures bred and raised in darkness. Since the Asteri buried many other secrets in the earth, we’re bound to explore them in the next acotar spin-off book.
Sarah returns to light and dark repeatedly across her series, especially when Elain and Azriel share scenes. One of the fandom’s favorites is when Sarah explicitly tells us that light and dark meet when their hands do, the legendary Truth-Teller a bridge of power between them. Power lies in the space between them, so what might happen if they bridge that space?
I saw the painting in my mind: the lovely fawn, blooming spring vibrant behind her. Standing before Death, shadows and terrors lurking over his shoulder. Light and dark, the space between their bodies a blend of the two. The only bridge of connection…that knife. (acowar)
Sarah reinforced that concept in hofas with this:
With a prayer to Cthona, she sent twin beams of light arcing around the prisms, shooting straight into them.
Twin bursts of that light flared from either prism, gunning for each other. Bands of light falling into darkness, her power stripped to its most elemental, basic form. They shot for each other, and where they met, light and darkness and darkness and light slamming into each other—
Bryce stepped into the explosion in the heart of it. Stepped into her power. It lit her up from the inside, lit up her very blood. Her hair drifted above her head, pens and papers and other office detritus flowing upward with it.
Such light and darkness—the power lay in the meeting of the two of them. She understood it now, how the darkness shaped the light. (hofas)
I cannot wait to see how this comes into play in the next book, especially as we explore dark places like Elain’s sight, the womb of the earth, subterranean waterways, etc.
The other book, The Once and Future Sex, also sounds interesting and applies to Elain’s story so well. In a discussion of the book, the author talked about the importance of social constructs—and how social constructs can be deconstructed. It makes me think about Elain’s upbringing and role, and how she is perceived by others. There are so many assumptions made about her character and they are sometimes contradictory. I think that was purposeful and we’re in for some surprises related to her character. Sarah reinforced that in different ways in the original series, first spin-off book, and bonus chapters. Turns out, sweet and proper Elain has claws after all and she isn’t afraid to make a move on the fearsome shadowsinger and spymaster. I know not everyone agrees, but I for one find that very interesting.
#this is for fun 🥰#elain archeron#azriel shadowsinger#elain x azriel#elriel#light and dark#and the power that lies in the space between them#elain’s vision and gifts#mystical earth magic#natural magic of the earth

yknow what's not talked about nearly enough. eliksni and human culture mixing. I desperately want to see more food culture passing between them. I know eliksni are all about ether now but like. they CAN eat food. assumedly they like to eat food. what is tasty to them. how can they alter human food. what sort of terrible eldritch concoctions can they make together that exactly 2 humans and 5 eliksni will find palatable
YES YES YES YOU GET IT. We do get some reference to what the Eliksni like to eat, but so far it's mostly just meat and figs with a side note to them having baked goods (Eido mentions tearing up a loaf of Eliksni bread during one of the FOTL lorebooks, though it's not clarified what type of bread it is), but there's not much else about their cuisine. Based on their teeth and jaw structure alone, we can assume that they're primarily carnivores that eat larger prey items, as their teeth are jagged and clearly made to cut through flesh, but that doesn't really give us much in terms of what they actually consume. My guess is that their diet is 60% meat 40% fruit based on the fact that they have colour vision and reference being able to taste sweet things, but that's entirely a made-up estimate. They certainly don't have the dentition for cracking nuts or grinding down plant matter, so I'm not sure if they're able to digest tougher plant material- but they do have hands for further food processing, and humans are notorious for eating things that we shouldn't because it tastes good, so that also makes it a moot point. I also want to know what their culinary traditions are, and how much of that survived the Whirlwind. It certainly seems like their livestock didn't, given the fact that both the Weavers and Dancers had to resort to cannibalism during the Drift.
What I really want to know what they think about Earth meats and fruits, as well as how Eliksni fruit compares to that on Earth. I also want to know which foods are safe for them to eat and which are safe for us to eat, since we've already got confirmation that Ether is kind of like a less potent alcohol to us. Eido mentions that she hates human candy, but that could just be a personal thing, and Misraaks cooked an overwhelming number of eggplants for Saint when Osiris was in his coma- but eggplant is also a very soft, meatlike vegetable when cooked, so I can totally see them being able to eat that. Given how well the Eliksni have been doing despite the staggering loss that they experienced when Riis got razed, I doubt there's much that they can't tolerate, but it's still on my mind regardless.
Most importantly however: I want to know if humans have introduced Eliksni to cheese. And, if they have, what the Eliksni think of cheese
