My 2023 Anime Watchlist
Anime (and related media) I've watched this year
Tokyo Mew Mew New Season 2 (2023)
Second (and final?) season of the Tokyo Mew Mew reboot! Always here for some good magical girls! I never finished watching the original series, so it was nice to see how the story goes. I wouldn't call it amazing, but it's a cool series. I wish they would make a third season for the A La Mode arc which came out later, but it seems they might be ending it here, Idk (I've never read the manga either)...
Subs since there's no dub.
Saint Seiya: The Beginning a.k.a. Knights of the Zodiac (2023)
Live-action movie adaption. Would I watch more if they do it? Yeah. Was it good? Not really... I'm not saying it's horrible, but eh, it was weak. The absence of 3 out of 5 boys is definetely felt. I mean, I didn't expect much of it, so it's not like I was dissappointed! ^^' I'm a SS fan, so I was in to see what they cooked.
I watched it dubbed at the cinema (there wasn't a subbed session but it's fine!).
One Piece: The Series Season 1 (2023)
Live-action adaption of the first arc. My first contact with the franchise! Charismatic group, the power of friendship, adventure in a new world, fun pirate crews... I loved it. Still pondering if I should get into this giant beast of an anime. It's just...So long. Never-ending. I'm sure I would like it but dear lord, is it long. Anyway. For now I'll content myself with waiting for the second season.
I alternated between dubs and subs! I think I prefer subbed but I wanted to check out the dub and it was also very good.
Porco Rosso (1992)
A Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki oldie! I was keeping an eye out for the Ghibli Fest going on in the US this year and I realized this was the only movie in the list I hadn't watched yet, so. It's definetely not among my favorites, but it was a good movie. A Pig-faced bounty hunter pilot in and adventure through Italy. Needed a little more Gina thought!
Subs cause there's no dub.
Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac Season 2 (2022)
Second season of the 3DCG reboot of Saint Seiya, covering the first half of the 12 Temples arc. It's definetely still way below the classic series, but the battles had quite an upgrade from season 1! Also no time spent on original characters I don't care about :) And of course it's always a pleasure to see the Gold Saints... and the scenes the classic series didn't adapt! I'm glad season 3 is coming next year!
I watched it dubbed (sadly they changed the og cast in my country, but the new one did a good job too).
YashaHime: Princess Half-Demon Season 2 (2022-23)
Second (and final?) season of the Inu-Yasha spin-off sequel. Look, Yashahime has a lot of flaws, but it has its qualities too and personally I enjoyed it. Nice to travel around the feudal era in this world with familiar and new characters. I would watch more but I think that was it? Would definetely want them to make some changes... I heard the manga is different, so...food for thought!
I didn't have access to the dub when I watched s1 but this time I did! (I'm not very fond of parts of the dub, but overall it was good).
Spy x Family S1 (2022) and S2 (2023)
After seeing gifs since last year I finally sit down to watch it! It's cute, it's funny, and it's cool! Spies, assassins, school, AND family shenanigans! Loved it. Bring me more. Looking forward for the upcoming movie and for the s3 announcement.
I watched most of it dubbed but the dub is a few episodes behind the subbed version so I finished season 2 in Japanese.
Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning (2023)
I didn't even watch Kizuna but I heard it wasn't necessary so might as well go, specially since they actually put this movie in theaters in my country and got most of the og dub cast... Sadly I wasn't impressed by the movie. I thought it was pretty meh. Could have given more for the group to do (it was mostly about the new character). Anyway... PS: The opening sequence was LOVELY though!!! ^^
Yu Yu Hakusho (1992-94)
I used to watch it back in the day, but never watched all of it until now! Good stuff. Not perfect, but it's a great series!!! Charismatic group, cool friendships, cool big bads, spirit detective shenaningans, youkai, and of course, battle tournaments!
Watched it dubbed, of course (except for the specials, since they weren't dubbed here). The series was in my watchlist for years but I guess knowing there would be "new" content is always a good push, which brings me to:
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 (2023)
Live-action adaption of the first 2(!!) arcs. A pleasant surprise! The biggest problem here is definetely that it's too short. There's other flaws too, sure, but still! I had my doubts but turns out I really liked it, overall positive impression. I really hope they make more in the future!
I've watched it twice, once dubbed and once subbed!

Another sad news, we have lost another great artist, a woman who dedicated her life to art: Mutsumi Inomata. Main Character Designer of the "Tales Of" series and many works in Dragon Quest series.
At the beginning of her career, she also worked as an animator on numerous animated series, including Lum, Saint Seiya (for which she even took care of the illustrations for a celebratory article on the legendary "Masami Kurumada" published in the "Newtype" magazine), City Hunter. 🕊️🕊️

Some (More, but Actual) Context For G Gundam
Content Warning: Casual mentions of genocide due to the fact that this is a post covering real world events that happened before and during the airing of Mobile Fighter G Gundam in Japan. Reader discretion is advised.
Also, shout outs to Secret Galaxy, whose video on G Gundam helped a bit with some of the juicy context.
So I know I said I'd be talking about G Gundam. I will, but I still need to set the scenery a bit before I actually talk about G Gundam proper. Give you some context, because it'll help when it comes time to understand what was going on with G Gundam. Think of me as Stalker, setting up the scene at the beginning of every episode of G Gundam.
So with that, Context Fight! Ready, GO!!!
Sunrise, Bandai, and Victory Gundam
(Fun fact for the Gintama heads out there: Victory Gundam protagonist Usso Ewin is voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi. In other words, Usso shares a voice actor with a sentient pair of glasses Shinpachi)
I figure a good place to start with all of this CONTEXT is start with what is going on at Sunrise, the anime company that produces and makes the Gundam anime series. Let's just say I didn't pick this gif of Usso out of the blue. During the run of the previous Gundam series, Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, Sunrise would be bought out by toymaker Bandai. And as they are the new bosses in town, Bandai started making demands. A lot of demands. So much so that series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino left the series once Victory Gundam wrapped up its run due to the amount of meddling Bandai was causing. So now, Bandai is in control of a franchise but lacking one of the main creative forces behind this iconic franchise. They also have a new idea for a new Gundam series, and they would prefer someone who is more compliant with their changes. Fortunately for Bandai, they would tap someone who had worked with Tomino on multiple projects together.
Enter Yasuhiro Imagawa
Bandai taps Yasuhiro Imagawa to direct this new Gundam series, as a move to get someone who may be more compliant to their whims. After all, Imagawa's only major projects as a director at this point are Ajikko-san and a couple of episodes of the Giant Robo OVA (a series I plan on watching eventually). There's just one problem: Imagawa worked under Tomino on a handful of projects, namely Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. So Imagawa kinda knows what Gundam's all about, especially since his focus was on storyboarding. If anything, he was just as put off on the idea as most Gundam fans at the time were, going so far as to try and come up with some ridiculous mecha designs that would flummox the people at Bandai. Imagawa would fail, but he would learn that it might be best to work with Bandai in order to make this Gundam series. Imagawa would begin work on a series that would, on the outside, be a radical departure from what Gundam was.
(Read in Susumu Chiba's voice) Stand up, Boy! Stand up and FIGHT!!!!
So you've probably gotten to this point and asked: "Why a tournament arc though?" And I will preface my answer with this: I'm not super-certain if the timeline lines up as well in my head, so if anyone can correct me on this, feel free to comment or message me on this if I'm wrong.
My answer is that there are two series responsible for this: Dragon Ball and Street Fighter. See, Dragon Ball Z would also be airing around this time, and if I'm thinking correctly, it should be airing around the time of the Cell Games arc (I think; Again, please correct me if I'm wrong). And remember, Dragon Ball is one of, if not the, most influential shounen battle series of all time. Add onto that the sudden success of Capcom's Street Fighter with the release of Street Fighter II and its colorful cast of characters from various nations with colorful attacks, and you can definitely see why Bandai would want to get in on the trend.
Would it surprise you if I told you that one of the more influential series for G Gundam was also Saint Seiya (or Knights of the Zodiac for those more familiar with its western name), specifically when it comes to the concept of the golden super mode. I also would not be surprised if Saint Seiya was also the reason for the majority of the Shuffle Alliance members being HOT MEN. Then again, Gundam's success was kickstarted thanks to women, so it may also be a treat for the ladies.
What's Going On in the World (1994 Edition)
So enough about Shonen Jump series and Street Fighter. What about the rest of the world? As we all know, media is informed by the world events that unfold as it's being made, and G Gundam is no exception. And while not all of these events happen before the series starts to air, they do, in my opinion, help to either inform or reinforce the ideas and themes present in Mobile Fighter G Gundam. I won't say what those themes and ideas are in this video, but here's an incomplete list of what is going on in the world before and during G Gundam's run:
The Japanese economic bubble bursts in 1992.
To reflect that, Patlabor 2 releases in theaters in 1993, best exemplifying the more pessimistic tones of post-bubble Japan by giving us a much colder and more cynical version of Patlabor that contrasts heavily to the more optimistic tone the series had prior to Patlabor 2.
Furthermore, a lot of western countries would be suffering from recessions at this point in the 90's. To put things into context for Americans, the economy is a large part of why Bill Clinton beat George H. W. Bush in the '92 Election.
In terms of entertainment, two extremely iconic series are still being worked on during G Gundam's airing: Pokemon and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The general public is more aware of the climate than ever before, especially since it had been about 9-10 years since scientists discovered a hole in the ozone layer directly above Antarctica.
A week after G Gundam begins airing, the Rwandan Genocide begins in earnest.
Before their infamous Tokyo Subway Sarin attack, the cult Aum Shinrikyo would pull off a smaller scale Sarin attack in Matsumoto.
Just for fun: Magic Knight Rayearth airs in October of '94. In my mind, Rayearth acts as a sort of distaff counterpart to G Gundam due to their primary audiences.
And that's a wrap. I hope this more scattershot dive into some Context TM was interesting. This is going to be on the exam, as next time I will finally be talking about Mobile Fighter G Gundam

Mackenyu Arata interview in Cinema★Cinema for Saint Seiya: The Beginning
Before I got the role of Seiya, I have to go through auditions. When it was decided that I would be leading a Hollywood production, I was shocked but very happy. But that time I would never imagine it to be such a massive production and a wonderful work. If I had known how it would turn out, I would've been even more excited (laughs). I don't know the feedback I would get from auditions, but when I go through one, I go in while thinking and convincing people "This role is for me!" This is the first time that I heard from the director, "I want Mackenyu Arata to play this role." I was really happy to be part of this project, and I think everyone else [working on this production] also felt the same way.
To tell you the truth, I didn't know much about the original manga. I asked the production team, "Should I read them before filming?" they told me not to. With this live-action film, they wanted to create a new story that respects the original without being too attached [to the original]. So I read the script with the thought of touching something new. But the scale is just so massive. There was a car chase, there were battles, and it was hard to imagine what kind of movie it'll turn out to be. Those scenes felt like a Fast & Furious or an Avengers movie, and that's exactly what it turns out to be (laughs). So I guess this is Hollywood. I was really excited just reading the script, I was really looking forward to filming.
Seiya is a boy with his own goal, but he has to overcome a certain test. He won't grow unless he overcomes it. Under such circumstances, he had to grow while having conflicts within. Hopefully, I can portray the part of Seiya who is very straightforward with an unwavering heart, at the mercy of all kinds of situations well. The scenes that portrayed Seiya's conflicts, and the scenes where he had to overcome a certain trauma were especially inspiring. If what Seiya has to go through happened to me in real life, I think my heart would break. No, I think my bones will break first (laughs). But it would be terrible if I actually broke any bones during filming, so I started working on my body early on. There is also a scene in the latter half where I had to strip (laughs). I made sure to prepare an unbreakable body with all my might.
All of the action scenes are quite difficult, so I started practicing a month before filming. It was great to have that kind of time. The filming went smoothly, we were able to run through without anyone getting injured. However, the practice period was really hard. I practiced five days a week from morning to evening. At the same time, I went to the gym every day to build my body. But thanks to that, I was able to do various action stunts. It may be the first time I was caught on video spinning round & round. I even went skydiving! I'm bad with high places, so I don't do bungee jumping or skydiving, but I had to jump from 10,000 meters above ground without a parachute… Kidding. That scene was made with the latest filming technology (laughs). Instead of the stunts, I think the heat was the hardest! The location for Seiya's training scenes was really hot. The altitude was high and the weather was always sunny, so I got sunburns. There was no shade, so I couldn't escape it. I think there's a natural connection I felt with Seiya's situation, who trains hard with the thought "I can't give up!"
All of my co-stars were wonderful people, and that was very encouraging for me. Sean Bean and Famke Janssen have been active in the Hollywood scene for many years, so it was an honor to be able to act with them in the same space. Sean Bean is actually an ordinary uncle (laughs). He seems super dandy and cool on screen, but off-screen he's cute, easy to talk to, and I love him. When I offered him, "Do you want to drink boba tea?" he responded curiously, "What is this?" His wife also came to set, and he was sort of spoiled by her (laughs). She was like, "You can't drink that!" and scolded him. The others also had their family members on set, I guess that's what's unique about Hollywood production. Also, Sean Bean played a lot of roles that die in the middle of the story right? I wonder how it will be for Alman Kido. It was hilarious that the person himself also said to me, "I die a lot in movies, don't I?"
The filming set is really like a boy's gathering, and I was so happy to meet new friends and have that much fun creating this work together. There are a lot of scenes that look dangerous on video, but I never felt tense during filming at all. I think it's because there's a lot of room in my heart. When there's not enough time and money, I tend to get nervous more and more, but here we had plenty of time and money (laughs). The people working on this are doing their best together for this movie, all working towards the same goal while enjoying their time. That's how it felt. At the forefront is Tomek Baginski, our director who is usually very quiet and soft-spoken, but when he gets a good shot, he starts dancing. It seems that he refrained from drinking alcohol during filming, but I wonder if he dances around when he does (laughs). When I saw him dance, I thought, "Ah, we shot a good scene," that made me very happy.
From the first day, I was amazed by the filming scale. The shooting was mainly in Hungary, but the area used for filming is huge. We shot in places often used for filming Hollywood movies, but they even let us use areas that seemed like a street or residential areas. The country cooperates in movie making. This allows wider shots, the world can be created on a wider scale, so you can see everything without restrictions. I was able to act in that environment which is ideal for an actor. We can enter the movie world easier. The four months of filming were also the perfect schedule to shoot a movie. Since I'm the main character, I didn't have much time off, but the staff and I were able to sleep properly (laughs). I was able to concentrate on the work without the pain of leaving the house all the time. However, in Hungary, the white fish is catfish... That's what surprised me the most. The taste was... catfish (laughs). If you ever go there, please try it out.
The set is always full of enthusiasm from the first day to the last, but I think the staff's enthusiasm peaked when Seiya put on the Saint Cloth. I felt great and so did the staff. They said, "It's the sacred cloth~! It suits you~!" I took a bunch of pictures of myself too (laughs). It weighed about 80 kg, but... I'm joking. But for Seiya, the cloth represents a lot of weight. Because he overcame the harsh training and finally got it. I could feel the weight of that, and I felt like I could endure any kind of challenge just by wearing the cloth. I thought it would be difficult to perform actions while wearing the suit, but they prepared a high-quality suit that took all things into consideration including ease of movement. Sturdy and easy to move in. It's in a size that only I can wear. My body has gotten a little bigger than during filming, so I might not fit in it now (laughs). If there is a sequel, then I have to slim down again... Well, what do you think? I might portray a more grown-up Seiya, so his arms and chest will get thicker. If I can come back as a strong-looking Seiya, I'll be very happy.
From his words, Arata seems to have a very fulfilling filming experience. "I want to see more of people's reactions, I want to travel to different countries with the movies I make!" Including global promotional tour? Please charm the world with that smile!
The theme of the interview was The Beginning. Chihayafuru was the Beginning for Mackenyu Arata
The work that became my starting point was Chihayafuru. It wasn't long after I just started acting, so I stepped into an unfamiliar filming scene with tremendous pressure.
I learned a lot on set and it was a very fulfilling experience. You can say it's the beginning for Mackenyu Arata. It was at this time that I realized the joy I felt with acting. However, instead of having fun, I was mostly terrified. I didn't understand anything then. I think I kept going because I just hate losing.

Mackenyu Arata (who became an internationally popular actor for his roles as the main character in the live-action "Knights of the Zodiac(Saint Seiya)The Beginning" movie and ZORO in the live-action "One Piece") and Min Tanaka star in this serious drama series “House of the Owl”about a Japanese, hidden political and financial mastermind known as the "Owl". https://x.com/takigawa_w/status/1790365255169904916?s=46&t=8Vf8aUwk_B-ZbQ5UAGv05w The owl sees everything with eyes that can see anytime, even in the middle of the night. Seventy-year-old charismatic Ryutaro Ohgami (Min Tanaka) has four children. His eldest son, Ichiro (Masanobu Ando), is unreliable, does not get along with his wife, has a Ginza hostess as his mistress, and is planning a new luxury restaurant without borrowing funds from his father so that he can leave his father's influence. Yumiko (Kyoko Hasegawa), the firm eldest daughter, has two seemingly happy children with her handsome trading company man husband, but her husband is doing shady deals (of a different kind than an interpreter for famous Major-League players) behind her back. The second son, Ryu (Mackenyu Arata), does not get along with his father, and after studying in the U.S., he returns to Japan to work for a small non-profit organization without contacting his family. One day, Ryu bumps into a beautiful American woman while jogging in the park, and her phone falls into the street and breaks. Ryu promises to pay for it, and when he asks for the woman's contact information, she gives Ryu her business card, which says "reporter" on it. Risako (Nakata Seina), the youngest and second daughter, aspires to be a singer-songwriter and is already 25 years old, but she has a natural singing voice and talent for songwriting and is expected to make a major debut. Risako tells her father, Ryutaro, about her dream, but Ryutaro is afraid that Risako will be swallowed up by the darkness of the entertainment world. One night, the son of Takeuchi (Masatoshi Nakamura), a candidate for the next prime minister, is killed after a bar fight. The son was also suspected of being on drugs. The murder suspect is caught, but "commits suicide" in jail. Overall, the story has a cool taste and a serious development. A scandal involving a politician, Ichiro's mistress, Yumiko's husband's ruinous dealings, Ryu starting a relationship with a beautiful reporter, Risako going for her dream, and their lives are vividly depicted. Hisako Manda's restrained performance as Ryutaro's wife, Kyoko, shines. The show's portrayal of the Tokyo club (the one with hostesses)scene, with Tae Kimura's performance as a hostess, adds a touch of realism that makes the show feel all the more authentic. Tae Kimura's performance as the hostess Ryutaro values as a source of information has a realistic feel as if she actually works at a club in Tokyo. What sets "House of the Owl" apart from other Japanese TV drama series is its serious, captivating depiction of the family's struggles, without resorting to over-the-top acting or exaggerated music. There is none of the over-the-top music, over-the-top acting, or over-the-top (unintelligible) jokes that are common in Japanese dramas, nor are there any male celebrities from famous entertainment companies that have caused scandals in Japan, nor any female casts from dozens of female idol group members performing not-so-good songs and dances. Thus, we can calmly observe the whereabouts of this charismatic, mastermind owl, Ryutaro Oogami, and his family. And just as real owls have natural enemies, those who are after "owls" are also heavily represented. If you have watched the episodes carefully, you may be shocked by the series of events that occur in the latter half of the season. The series culminates in a shocking series of events that will leave you eagerly anticipating the next season. This is a must-watch for anyone looking for a drama that offers a glimpse into the complex lives of a family caught up in the world of politics and finance. I can't wait for the second season. #HouseOfTheOwl

TMS Entertainment, a beloved Japanese animation studio currently owned by Sega Holdings Inc., a subsidiary of SegaSammy holdings, has just announced that for their 60th anniversary, they’ll begin uploading special animated features of significant importance to the company to their official YouTube page. Most noteworthy to Sega/Sonic fans, this includes the first six episodes of Sonic X in its original Japanese dub. The entire campaign begins on August 5th, 2024. This is a good chance to get a taste of what Sonic X was originally like, free of both English voices and the cacophony of censorship edits imposed on it in its original English dub by 4Kids Entertainment
Gotta go fast as you rush past the break for the skinny on this special event. GO! GO! GO! GO! LET’S GO!
As stated above, Sonic will be the one to kick off TMS Entertainment’s 60th anniversary celebration on August 5th. On that day, at noon EST, 9AM PST, they will upload episode 1: The Supersonic Hero Takes The Stage, in its original Japanese format with English subtitles. On August 6th, episode 2 will follow, then episode 3 on August 7th, and so on, but episode 6 will come on August 12th instead of August 10th. Strangely, their schedule says they will upload episode 5 again on August 13th-16th. Based on this, it’s possible each episode besides episode 5 will only be online for one day, so just in case, make time to catch each episode on the upload date.
Fortunately, TMS has already provided links to episodes 1-5 on YouTube. You can go to each and click the “Notify Me” button to have YouTube send you a notification for when each episode will premiere. Here are the embeds to each episode.

As for the rest of the 60th anniversary event, TMS will also be uploading episode 1 of Big X (The studio’s very first anime from August 3rd 1964, based on the Osamu Tezuka manga), Super Dimension Century Orguss episodes 1-10, and the Takeshi Koike directed Lupin III movie trilogy, consisting of Jigen’s Gravestone, Goemon’s Blood Spray, and Fujiko’s Lie. Go to TMS Entertainment’s 60th anniversary celebration news page for the details and schedule on all anime being presented.
TMS Entertainment has been the animation studio for many beloved anime throughout the decades. They are most associated with long running franchises such as Lupin III, Detective Conan (Known in the west as Case Closed), as well as several anime based on Sega franchises, not just including Sonic X, but also Virtua Fighter, Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls, and Phantasy Star Online II: The Animation. They also animated the FMV cutscenes in Burning Rangers. Besides anime, they also had a hand in animating several western cartoons, including Inspector Gadget, Cybersix, The Real Ghostbusters, Batman: The Animated Series, Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, and The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Currently, they are working on popular anime such as Undead Unluck and Dr. Stone.
TMS Entertainment’s official YouTube page currently hosts trailers, clips, and full episodes of many anime they have produced throughout their long history. In same cases, they have the entire series of some of their anime available to view absolute free, including Karate Master (1973), Cat’s Eye (1983), Magic Knight Rayearth (1994) (Along with its Brazilian Portuguese dub), Virtua Fighter (1995) (As well as its Spanish dub), Itazura na Kiss (2008), Lupin III Part 2 (1977), Lupin III Part 4 (2015), and the English dub of Sonic X (Season 1) (Season 2) (Season 3) (Plus, the Brazilian Portuguese dub, surprisingly). They are gradually uploading episodes of The Gutsy Frog (1972), Yowamushi Pedal Grande Road (2013), Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas (2009), and Z/X Ignition (2014). They are also, as of this writing, in the middle of an ongoing Lupin III celebration in which they upload a feature-length Lupin III TV special every month, with this current month’s pick being Tokyo Crisis (1998). They’re a channel worth following if you love watching all kinds of anime, no matter its age.
So will you be catching these uploads of Japanese Sonic X? Are there any TMS animated productions you’re a particular fan of? Give us a holler in the comments section before.
And remember, if you like Sonic X in Japanese, the entire series has been made available on Blu-Ray courtesy of Discotek Media. (Who also blessed us with complete Blu-Ray releases of Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls, Virtua Fighter, and The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog)

Hello again! This ask is in case the one before it got eaten by Tumblr. In your opinion, what is it about the Xros Wars Hunter series that made it poorly received by the audience? Do you think the series had potential that was wasted by it's comedy driven tone? In what way would Hunters' storyline be if it was handled better? What would have been improvements to it, in your opinion? Do you think Tagiru could have been handled better, especially in the finale, and about the goggles thing? What aspect or part of the Hunters plot had a lot of wasted potential that was sadly underutilised in your opinion? What do you think the director was going for in this series? If there was a reboot with a similar premise to this one, what would you like to see from it? I like your insights. Eat more fruits and sleep earlier!
So here's one thing I need to point out that is very important to know about Hunters, and in fact is a factor in why the way the Japanese fanbase treats it is somewhat different from the way the English-speaking fanbase does: Hunters was a last-minute series made to stall a timeslot. This is not a statement I'm making to dunk on it (in fact, this is arguably why the Japanese fanbase is more forgiving of it), but a fact that has actually been on record and has been openly discussed -- unfortunately, the only material I know about it that's been actually translated is this one (which mentions the Xros Wars staff not being told that Hunters would exist until they were already making the Death Generals finale), but it is actually a well-documented and well-known fact that's properly cited in Japanese circles. (If you want to go hunt for the source yourself, it's apparently been mentioned in Otona Anime Vol. 22; I've already passed this info on to relevant parties in the hopes of seeing it translated, so maybe we'll see it on English record someday.)
But yes: Hunters wasn't originally planned to exist until the last minute. It's a series made in a hurry to hold down the timeslot until Saint Seiya Omega was ready. That's why it has no new toys, and that's also why I'm not really sure that finale crossover was made to bait the audience as much as it was the staff themselves messing around to have fun, because they weren't really trying to get ratings anyway (especially at 6:30 in the morning!). So in order to figure out why the series is Like That, instead of thinking it of as a series that was supposed to be something bigger and was truncated down to two cours, it's actually more accurate to think of it as a series that wasn't supposed to be anything at all...so if anything, the staff came up with too many good ideas for a series that was never actually supposed to be that interesting to begin with. Director Kaizawa himself said that he enjoyed the series and Tagiru being "fun", which is frankly a respectable goal when the job you're given is to literally waste time.
But most of the English-speaking fanbase doesn't know this, and on top of that, at the time, everyone was still obsessed with the idea that a Digimon series has to be something based on the Adventure formula where everyone has psychology-tier levels of character development, and they expected Hunters to be a series that was posing itself as a "full-fledged" sequel to Xros Wars vanilla and Death Generals the way 02 was to Adventure...but the truth is that it was never supposed to be that to begin with. And I also generally get the impression that "series that aren't necessarily that deep, but also make no pretense of being deep" tend to be better received in Japan; I've seen at least one doujinshi artist poke fun at the fact that the Hunters plot "escalates" abruptly at the end, yet still loves the series enough to make doujinshi of it, because she likes the characters. On the flip side, Western fans tend to like things that "at least tried" to be deep even if they completely fail in execution, whereas Japanese fans are more likely to mock that kind of thing for being unnecessarily pretentious or even insulting.
So I think the reason Hunters is so poorly received in English-language circles is, quite simply, the mismatch between expectations and reality. I don't know how many people in the Japanese fanbase are going to have Hunters as their favorite series ever, and it's not like I haven't seen criticism of its, let's say, unusual way of handling its pacing and how necessary of a series it was, but at the same time there's still a very "it is what it is" attitude towards it, and it's not like it's necessarily fashionable to make it into a target of dunkery. Personally, I've seen a lot other kids' shows that are far shallower and less interesting than Hunters ever was, so I don't really have it in me to see why it's such a huge problem, and I think a big part of this issue is that even when people don't think they're too stuck on wanting everything to be like Adventure, they're still unconsciously comparing it to the "Adventure formula" and believing that anything that doesn't live up to certain aspects of it is "bad". And I do think personal taste is very important, and I do agree that since most Digimon fans got in with the classic series, it's understandable that they'll prefer things like the classic series...but ultimately, you're only going to frustrate yourself if you don't have reasonable expectations of what you're going into.
So in the end: Hunters wasn't a series that didn't try hard enough. It's a series that tried too hard for what it was realistically able to accomplish.

Lets talk Knights of the Zodiac:
This review will be mostly positive based on my own experience but I still will have my criticisms as I go along. To begin I want to be very transparent here and say after watching this movie: It is NOT--I repeat--NOT “Dragon Ball Evolution 2.0” like many people claim online. This movie's characters, script, dialogue, action, and story are leaps and bounds more faithful to the source material it is adapting and showing respect for it all the same. I'm positive those who keep claiming that it is have never watched the movie or are just speaking utter nonsense because let’s be real: Dragon Ball Evolution is beyond bad and KOTZ—objectively—is not.
This movie is perfectly fine; very fun I might add. It definitely stands up there with the likes of Alita: Battle Angel in terms of anime adaptations and as a movie it gets the job done.
Now for the fans going into this story expecting it to be verbatim like the original animanga, you are not going to find that here. This movie is very much an origin story for this particular universe of Saint Seiya with its own key lore and world building that takes influence from the Netflix reboot but actually executed those aspects better in comparison to how the CG show did it. I certainly appreciate this movie trying something new with its setting and story in comparison to LoS which told a very rushed rendition of the Silver Saints and Twelve Temples arc and I believe if this movie did the same thing, my expectations would be significantly lower and my criticisms far more harsher.
From an objective standpoint, this movie’s pacing definitely could use some improvement. I definitely appreciate what the writers and directors could give with the runtime they had but when it comes to character such as Nero and Seiya and Sienna’s time spent bonding, there’s definitely something to be left desired, Nero especially but we’ll get to him later. The script itself is okay, can be basic in some areas, cheesy in others but never anything that made me actually cringe. The movie’s music is otherwise really good. The orchestral Pegasus Fantasy rendition was definitely a highlight of the film for me and the music that plays through a lot of the action and somber scenes is really atmospheric.
To add, I know there were some fans that complained that not all the bronzes were here but I’m pretty sure that was for the movie’s benefit. Introducing so many characters all at once would mean that audiences would have no time to connect with them and the story would have been bloated and full of plot holes. I love how they kept the core cast as just Seiya, Nero, and Sienna for the time being to get us more familiar to their world before moving onto the others.
As for other things, the set pieces and CGI aren't terrible. It's definitely a step above most tokusatsu shows and movies but not on the level of something like Alita or some MCU movies. It's passable but definitely not a complete eye sore.
Some shots are a bit goofy but they don't linger too long and I think it adds to the charm of this being an otherwise fun action film based on an even more zany and violent anime. The fights are all well-choreographed and filmed. I saw some complaints about the lighting being dark but that's not the case here. Everything in the movie is well lit and it's obvious who's who.
I thought the armors looked pretty okay and knowing that Kurumada actually approved them looking more medieval and archaic rather than how they were in the original animanaga makes for a nice creative detail that gives this movie more uniqueness in the StS verse.
Slight spoilers here but it is confirmed and shown in the movie that the armors do in fact evolve like how they do in the original manga and anime so if this movie does get its potential sequels, I look forward to seeing how they translate that.
⚠️SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT⚠️
To move onto characters I enjoyed a majority of the main cast throughout the movie. Everyone not only understood the characters they were portraying but giving them their own charm and nuances to make them feel more like individuals.
To start with the main man Seiya, he's a lot more reserved here, because he is a lot older, but some of his attitude from the animanaga still remains like his brash attitude and his unwavering resolve to never give up. His character is quite complex with this movie going further in detail about the conflict he has with losing his sister, his obsession with finding her, and his hesitance to accept Sienna as a goddess until he witnesses it for himself. I appreciate them putting more and more time into emphasizing Seiya's relationship with his sister and Seiya at a crossroads between finding her and protecting Sienna all at once as opposed to how the anime/manga did it.
Seika is almost forgotten after the first few episodes/chapters of the original so it was nice to see that she had more of an impact on Seiya's character here.
Next, we have Sienna and I'm going to say that she is the best iteration of the Saori Kido character. While some of the pacing of her scenes were a little off at times, it didn't matter because I was engaged with what they did with her in this film. This story focuses on Sienna's humanity as opposed to the original where Saori has pretty much already accepted what she is and we never truly get to see a lot of her struggle with her heritage and most of that was relegated to the very beginning of the series. Here, Athena is the equivalent of a malevolent spirit that Sienna is constantly trying to drown out. From the way, she speaks about Athena to her parents and how that separated them feels real. She is a toung woman who’s not only caught in the middle of a broken family she cares for but is essentially a ticking time bomb. She accepts that she may not be herself one day but you can tell that deep down she doesn't want to believe that. She starts off as the typical haughty rich girl towards Seiya and while I do think that their relationship could have used a few more scenes of them getting used to each other, it still feels plausible that he cares for her I’m the end. I would be a bit of a brat too if I was going to become doomsday incarnate one day. Here she suffers loss but in turn finds a new purpose and reason to keep living. At a core it is her human side that matters most.
I also adore that Sienna starts off not in complete control of her cosmo. It gives more presence to the gods in this scenario and how dangerous their cosmo is to a regular human. It makes me really excited to see what gods late like in this universe but only time will tell.
Moving onto Alman and Guraad since they're basically two sides of the same coin. Making Alman a morally ambiguous man who is not all good fits very in line with the Mitsumasa in the original animanaga. The slow unraveling of the truth that he first and foremost only cares about his daughter is perfect and sets up the domino effect that will extend to all the children he used as a means to an end.
Guraad on the other hand is a MILLION times better than the Guraad in the Netflix reboot. Not only does she feel appropriate as an antagonist but she gives better layer to the conflict of fighting against the gods and at the same time having to come with the burden of killing her surrogate daughter to do so. Sienna and Guraad share a bond that feels genuine and when her maternal instincts shine it's wonderfully executed. It adds so much more emotionally weight knowing that a complete accident on Sienna’s end pushed away who she considered family and Guraad realizing that to makes her attempt to save Sienna feel earned.
Now we have Nero. I love Ikki in almost every universe and here it is no different. The mystery behind his character and past along with him as an antagonist is one of the best but weakest aspects of his character in this movie in my opinion. His true motives are unclear but from what a lot of people have speculated and based on Diego himself, his motivations largely have to do with Shun. Potentially Nero does not know where his brother is and I think that would make for a great parallel between Seiya and Nero if this series is to continue. He definitely has a vendetta against the gods and has the Sagittarius armor in his possession but at what ends? His character toward the end leaves more questions than answers and I wish we got a fair balance of flashbacks from his perspective to compare/contrast with Seiya’s. He is a threat through and through and the movie does well in establishing the bar that is set between him and Seiya. He's definitely a character I want to see expanded upon more in the future and what ulterior motives he has going on as it seems that Guraad was a stepping stone for things to come. I want more of him and I hope to god we do.
Marin is, dare I say, perfect. Everything from her nonchalant demeanor, to the way she trains Seiya, THE WAY SHE GOES TO SLEEP and her presence she's easily another favorite of mine in the movie next to Sienna. We get just enough of her to see what she's all about but like Nero, I hope we do see more of her. She serves the purpose she’s meant to in the story and I was quite confused about her “bound to this island by destiny” schtick (which was really an excuse to keep her out of the third arc) but overall she’s just awesome.
And last but not least Mylock. Easily he's better than Tatsumi by a country mile. The writers actually managed to make a dull asshole of a character into a fun and entertaining one. His action scenes were a highlight and were just classic king fu action that I just adore.
The story overall centers around the ideals surrounding family, humanity, and fighting through a destiny that’s not completely set in stone. It’s very anime but at the same time is personable and relatable in some way or another.
To conclude : Knights of the Zodiac is a fun film with great action, solid writing, a talented main cast of characters, and I was genuinely surprised at how much I ended up liking it. It shows respect or to the source material while doing its own thing and that’s honestly the best route it could have gone. It could have been way worse.
It’s a solid 7/10. Had some bumps in the road but it managed to make it to its destination safe and sound. Regardless of performance, I will definitely watch sequels.

I think the thing that really gets me about all of the new Saint Seiya adaptations in recent years (Legend of Sanctuary, Netflix’s Knights of the Zodiac, The Beginning) is that they KEEP STARTING THE STORY OVER
No progress is ever being made!!!
Next Dimension’s release schedule seems to be a complete mystery, and despite running for over 15 years (since 2006, so we’re actually pushing 20) it doesn’t seem to have gotten us any closer to the Heaven Chapter, which is the story that Kurumada has apparently wanted to tell THE ENTIRE GOD DAMN TIME
I just want one of these adaptations to overtake the source material and pick up wherever it is with guidance from Kurumada or something. Give me Saint Seiya Super, I don’t care at this point, just commit to something, please!

Time to talk about
Saint Seiya: The Beggining
a.k.a. Knights of the Zodiac (2023)
I’ve finally watched it! So here is me rambling about it (expect criticism)
LORE
I really think they should have made Seiya aware of Cosmos, gods and whatnot from the beginning instead of making him learn about it with the audience, it really is a lot to take out of the blue...
Also now that I think about it the prologue with the Gold knights feels kinda out of place, with so much of the lore left out as it is. They could have talked a bit more about that, like actually showing Aiolos talking to Mitsumada and Guraad. Saori mentions the occasion later on but she could have ellaborated a bit more too.
I also have to question the decision to have Saori refer to Athena as if she was a separate entity when it’s a big deal in canon that Athena chooses to actually reincarnate as a human, as opposed to other gods who just possess new hosts. They could keep the “my powers are growing and getting out of control” thing without talking as if she was becoming someone else.
And I’m not gonna dwell on Guraad and Kido having tech that can hold relatively well when fighting Saints (and gods?), but...blergh
CASSIOS
Obviously since they changed all that background they had to change Cassios too, but one weird thing is how mad he was at Seiya when Seiya didn’t even beat him at that cage fight!! He hit him twice and then ran off! Like?? It wasn’t even particularly humiliating, Cassios had just beaten him twice or something. Also odd to make Cassios this big obstacle to overcome (yes they had Ikki there in the end but they spent too much time on Cassios and he doesn’t even use Cosmos)
GURAAD and KIDO
So... Guraad was (somehow!!!) draining people of their Cosmos - which means she was killing them, right? or not? Cause if yes I think they really overlooked that. I mean, many of them were KIDS!!!! So Seiya finds out and he questions Saori about it, then we cut to a different scene, and when we come back they’re already discussing something else and don’t bring it up again, like?????
Was Mitsumasa ashamed of the kidnappings? Did he regret them or did he just regret Guraad’s actions towards Saori? I'm not sure. Again, unless I missed something (which is possible), this was overlooked. Seiya didn’t get the chance to confront him about it, cause Saori drove him far from there to talk (was it to protect her father? if yes I’m assuming he regretted it but idk)
Also not that I care about Mitsumasa, but it was kinda stupid how he got himself killed for nothing (yes he was trying to kill the enemy but then they escaped AND took Saori, so it accomplished nothing!)
MARIN
Poor Marin deserved a better mask. In fact, I don’t know why insist on the mask, even if they eventually decided to introduce the doubt about her identity, it’s been many years, I think she would be different enough not to be recongnized even if she was Seika. I think they could have given her something more too, like why she didn’t leave the island to help. Some emotional connection to Seiya, idk, something! Also in the end she and Saori could have interacted a little.
I gotta say I’m a bit surprised Marin even made it to the movie though, considering how many characters were cut. But since they wanted to show Seiya’s training they had to have her, right?! I’m glad to see her, even if her scenes could be better. Where is her poster though??
(sidenote: there were some legit chuckles in the theater after Marin jumps off the mountain and Seiya laments he just got up there. Possibly partially cause in the dub it kinda sounded like he was cursing too)
SEIKA
I don’t get that talk about obsession vs. purpose. Yes I got that Seiya had to understand it wasn’t his fault that Seika was taken but that doesn’t mean he was wrong in looking for her, specially when he was finally getting close to the people responsible for it? I was legit thinking they were saying he should give her up, but fortunately they reinforced his wish in the end. I just thought the “obsession” quote wasn’t well applied.
I thought the bits we got of Seiya and Seika’s relationship was cute though. So not only we have Marin teaching Seiya but also to see Seika protecting him was cool. He called her strong (and kind)! Saint Seiya is usually not big on women but it’s nice that the male protagonist has such strong female presence in life.
SEIYA x SAORI
I think the Seiya x Saori bonding was rushed. They could have talked and empathized a little more. Him getting through to her when her powers were getting out of control was to be expected (a pretty common trope), but since I felt their relationship was rushed, it felt a little bit forced to me... or rather not forced, but it lacked some impact, I don’t know. Him using her own words about fate was a good move, but I think maybe they should have also emphasized, before he told her he was not giving up on her, that she was feeling desperate/lonely/hopeless because of her father’s (Kido’s) death. So then when he put himself by her side she would feel hope again for she was not alone and together they would find a way out of destruction.
On a sidenote I know Saori is a goddess and whatnot but I think she shouldn’t be able to grow people’s limbs back, but okay I guess. Also I think they could have left her with long, straight brown hair (like in the manga) instead of purple
IKKI and OTHER KNIGHTS (and SEIKA)
Couldn’t they give Ikki at least a little depth?? He said that, unlike Guraad, he wasn’t trying to kill Athena to save the world. He said people don’t need gods, and he wanted the Gold cloth. But why? What is his goal? The movie doesn’t explain, and to a new audience, I would say that would be important to make him compelling. When he was taking the gold cloth from Guraad I gasped and legit thought for a second he was going to kill her (or at least try to) while explaining he was actually doing this to get revenge for himself and for his brother Shun - but there was none of that! That would have actually be interesting. In the og he is mostly there to avenge himself, right? But bringing up Shun would have made a good parallel with Seiya looking for Seika (which already existed in the og but with Shun wanting to reunite with Ikki instead).
This would have been setup by Saori explaining to Seiya she just recently found out that Guraad (and maybe Mitsumasa too) sent kids to train and grow their Cosmos and she felt bad about it.
ALSO in the end when Saori and Seiya are talking about looking for Seika maybe they could have said they would go after the kids sent for training as well. Saori would want to try to liberate them of it all or something, though at least some of them would end up joining her, including, oh I don’t know, the Dragon, Cygnus and Andromeda knights.
Even if they didn’t show them, at least it would be a setup! Only focusing on Seika also makes me wonder how would things go later on, cause in the original that plot point is overshadowed by everything else going on - not like that is particularly good writing, but to give her such attention would mean adjusting the plot in a more or less significant way, right? Or maybe not, I guess the ocassional reminder could suffice... But honestly, there are zero allusions to the other knights, even when we could have at LEAST gotten a mention of Shun from Ikki. Or even vague mentions. It’s weird.
I’m puzzled on what would be the movie’s plans going forward (if it ever does).

Watched the new Knights of the Zodiac movie
That's right, for Mother's Day, I decided I was going to watch the live action version of my favorite series. Before I begin, let me state my feelings as well as the fact that because this is an adaptation, I won't spoil the movie. First off, I was in the "nervous" camp and my expectations were low.
However, once it started, in present time, I was just blown away.
When they said they got the people who choreographed the Shang Chi film, they were right. It's brutal and well done, especially the opening one. A lot of people compared this movie to Mortal Kombat (the first one) and that's a good way to put it. It has that touch of campy dialogue but it borderlines amusing without being stupid, and sometimes clever. A good example is that everyone keeps telling Seiya to "stop dancing", which is a nice callback to how the characters move in Things are very well adapted. One nice touch is that anytime a Saint runs fast, you see them dig their heels before shooting like a bullet. Speaking of bullet, it does adapt well on the idea of how a Saint can do against modern warfare in a show don't tell display.
First scene with the black Saints, you look at them like their an army of Terminators and they're unstoppable despite being unarmed. Lots of people die and it's great.
I think what is great about this movie, is that you can actually enjoy it even as an adult. This is because the movie does the one thing that the anime didn't and that is bring out the ethical dilemma about being a Saint. I also like how they portrayed Athena in this because unlike the Netflix adaptation where people are tricked into thinking Athena could be evil, it visually shows the two sides of Athena. If you weren't a Saint Seiya fan, you would believe by the end that Athena could be a force for evil or good.
Oh and third act, were there tears from the actors? Yes! Lots of lots of people cry, it's amazing. Lots of buildings get wrecked due to the power of the Saints and it's amazing.
I loved the actors and by the end, I seriously hope there is a sequel.
I have a feeling that it may not do great in the theaters because we all have live action anime fears, but I have a good hunch that once this hits streaming, I think it will be a cult classic. So please buy a ticket, support this film!

• Hi It’s The Person Who Just Asked For A Matchup I Forgot To Add That I Am A Female And That I Could Request The Matchup With Either ( A Golden Saint Or Bronze Saint) ~ Sorry For The Inconvenience 😭
~~~~~
Don't worry about it and here you go! I hope that you enjoy it and sorry that it came out late, and I apologize if it's short as well!!
I match you with El-Cid!
He may also be quiet but he is very observant. He loves to hear you speak in different languages. It amazes him that you are so patient to even learn a new language. When you had told him about how you had been bullied, he was pissed. He refused to let you go anywhere if he wasn’t there with you. When someone gave you a weird look or went to say something extremely rude to you, El-Cid would be right there next to you and staring down at the person. “What did you say to her?” His aura was quite intimidating if you didn’t know him.
He can sense when you are overworked. He knew that you grow anxious and stressed when you overwork yourself so he decided to just cuddle with you and watch your favorite movie. He talked with Athena and was able to get two days that he could spend with you to help you relax. He’s a cuddle bug and you can’t tell me otherwise. When he was training with the newer bronze saints, he noticed that you were doing your best to exercise and decided that he would exercise with you.
“You don’t have to do this.” You said, as you were working on sit-ups. El-Cid smiled at you softly while he held your feet down. “I like to help my girl out.” He whispered. This man loves to do hair and you can’t tell me he doesn’t. He has you sitting on a chair as he brushes out your hair and begins to braid it. He’s so gentle with you that you feel like you are gonna fall asleep with how gentle he is. El-Cid has caught you a couple of times singing and has been in love with your voice since then. You tell him that you are actually quite shy about your singing voice but he smiles and tells you that your voice is absolutely adorable.
On lazy days, the two of you just sit back and do whatever you like to do. For a little bit, you lean up against his chest reading a book while he has his eyes closed but after a while, you gently tap his shoulder and ask him if he would like to go on a walk with you. He agrees and the two of you go outside to go for a little walk. You were holding his hand while he has a lazy smile on his lips. He loves everything about you and will tell the whole world how much he loves you.
