[I read the sub-genre info but no genre listed here includes my favorite games.] The above sub-genre information does not fully encompass all of the smaller or more niche sub-genres that could reasonably fit into the core genres. I encourage you to think deeply about the gameplay mechanics and artistic influences of the games you enjoy the most to determine if they may be close enough to one of the listed core genres such that you can decide it's representative enough to say your tastes fall in that genre, or fall into two or more of the listed genres. Ultimately, it is up to your own analysis of your preferences to find a core genre you feel adequately encompasses your tastes and decide whether or not you need to click this 'other' option.
(Core Genres and Sub-Genres are lifted from the list of core genres on Wikipedia. If you need additional assistance picking a core genre you feel is your favorite, the hyperlinked Wikipedia article has a lot of good information explaining these sub-genres and what sorts of games fall under them. None of this is my opinion.)
(This post was inspired by a favorite video game genre poll that listed several action, adventure, and RPG sub-genres but omitted mainstay genres like puzzle games, sports games, or strategy games.)

G Witch Onscreen Text: Episode 1
This is the second part of a project where I try my best to document and discuss all of the (relatively important) text that appears on monitors and screens in G Witch. Cause I can.
<< Click here to see the one I did on the Prologue
ooOOooohhh beneath the cut lie the HORRORS....
Just to give you an idea of how needlessly hard they went on the monitor text, when Suletta is rescuing Miorine, she mentions that she's almost out of oxygen, and then, when she brings her into Aerial's cockpit, on her helmet, you can faintly see text displaying the amount of oxygen.
And THEN, when she starts talking to Miorine, the text on her helmet changes AGAIN to display that the comm link has been established
WHY DID THEY DO THAT????
Well clearly they did it cause they knew my stupid ass would eventually document it. Anyway, let us begin.
TEXT: I am a HARO. You can ask me anything! (The only text on the icons I can make out are MAP and SCHOOL, unfortunately.)
This is the HARO navigation bot Suletta meets when first coming to Asticassia, and we know that it's Haro Navigation System Ver. 3.0! If that's something that interests you....
TEXT: MOBILE CRAFT FUTURE TECHNOLOGY SIZE 6.6m 18.8t
Not much of note, it's just a hologram of a mobile craft. Exciting if you like mobile crafts. (I like mobile crafts)
When the Docks containing the Demi Trainers are locked, the display says LOCKED. When they're in use, the display says IN OPERATION.
TEXT: (Left) PILOTING DEPARTMENT KP001 GUEL JETURK MO-0032G GUEL'S DILANZA 26 WINS 0 LOSS 0 TIE
(Right) PILOTING DEPARTMENT KP029 PARKER EASTCOTT TKG-328 KAPELL-KUU 2 WINS 1 LOSS 1 TIE
The Battle Display for the first duel we see in the show, and from this we can see that Guel currently stands undefeated with 26 wins! Double digits! No wonder he's the ace pilot at Asticassia...too bad he's a dick.
This is the graph that's shown during the Benerit Group board meeting, detailing the earnings of the groups members for the current period.
Interestingly, the 3 highest earners are: Peil Technologies - 8000 Grassley Defense Systems - 8100 Jeturk Heavy Machinery - 8300
So, funnily enough, at the beginning of the story, Jeturk Heavy Machinery is actually the most successful company within the group. It explains why Vim Jeturk felt so comfortable in his plot to assassinate Delling, and goes to show how quickly he fell from the top position after Guel lost to Suletta all those times.
Fun Fact by the way, Prospera's first appearance in the show proper is during this meeting.
She seems kind of annoyed about something.
TEXT: DUEL COMMENCING FIRST TO BREAK MS BLADE ANTENNA IS THE WINNER
We don't see it very often, but during a duel, a display stating the win condition of the duel is broadcast for the benefit of the spectators.
When Miorine boards Aerial for the duel, we get a look at its system control menu.
Top to bottom, left to right, the options are: COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER IDENTIFICATION FRIEND FLIGHT DATA RECORDER NAVIGATION DISPLAY WEAPON SELECTION CONDITION MONITOR COMMUNICATION SYSTEM GROUND POWER UNIT INSTRUMENT FLIGHT RULE SIMULATOR INSTRUMENT APPROACH CHART INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM APPROACH POINT RAM AIR TURBINE
We also get a brief look at the Weapon Selection Sub-Menu
TEXT: SELECT YOUR WEAPON BEAM SABER BEAM RIFLE BEAM VULCAN
I think a lot of the main settings are interesting (what the hell is "Identification Friend?") but what's really interesting to me is that Aerial's Gundbits don't seem to be selectable via the Weapon Menu.
We also get a brief glimpse at the Red Dilanza's control menu.
No idea what I'm looking at, to be totally honest, but yknow. It's nice!
TEXT: EMERGENCY BUTTON
When Suletta intrudes into the duel and gets back in Aerial, we see that it has an emergency button (seemingly somewhere on its foot) that opens the cockpit.
TEXT: COMMUNICATION MODE -OUTERCOM-
When Suletta headbutts Miorine and they start arguing about Aerial, Aerial's comms system gets set to OUTERCOM mode, which explains why everyone outside of Aerial can hear the argument.
This could have been done by accident when Suletta headbutted Miorine, but I like to believe that Eri herself did this on purpose.
Just so it isn't left unsaid, Aerial's Permet ID is XVX-016, and when a combatant in a duel is the Holder, the Holder Symbol is displayed on their Duel Card.
When Suletta is telling Miorine about her mother's motto, the GUND-Bits appear on the monitor and come online as Aerial 'speaks.' This, combined with the fact that the GUND-Bits aren't accessible via the Weapon Select menu, implied all the way back in episode one that it's Eri who controls them. Although interestingly, it seems that, internally, the GUND-Bits are referred to as GUNBITS.
I obviously won't transcribe the two pages of this book, but the book El4n is reading here is actually The World as Will and Representation by German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. We actually see its title in a later episode, and the main ideas present in this work are extremely important when it comes to understanding El4n's character. But that's a story for another post.
TEXT:
YOU ARE THE WINNER OF THE DUEL.
thanks!
TEXT: HOLDER REGISTRATION [SETTINGS]
I always thought it was a little funny how the transferring of the holder title was just like, an option on their phones and not an automatic process.
ADDENDUM:
Thank you to @the-eeveekins for pointing out that Aerial is currently running SYS Ver E.S (Ericht Samaya) as opposed to 2.0 in the Lfrith!
I didn't even notice!! That's crazy!!! Thank you so much!
Also I realize I should probably point out that we see that Nika's ID is LM236 in this photo. She never duels so there's never a moment where she says it out loud.
And that's all for episode 1! Not too much super interesting, but there's still a lot to see and think about if you're paying attention! (Like, why does Aerial have a Cockpit Voice Recorder at all, actually? We know that Suletta often talks with Aerial in the cockpit about personal stuff so...you don't think that....Prospera....?)

Tallest Pepperoncini, when was the last time you’ve gone to battle and what is your favorite battle armor?
Lich, do you like being a tallest or would you still prefer your high general position?
Mem what kinds of gossips do you and Miyuki share in her chambers? Anything juicy?😉
Red, while your in the afterlife. What’s there to do while you wait for Purple to join you?
Pepperoncini "Oh... by the time I completed basic training and entered elite training, the final battles of the Plague Wars were fought and won on our side. I fought hundreds of battle simulations in my elite training years but I never fought a live-live battle before being measured tallest. I'm not as ashamed of this fact as I probably should be. War is Hell; not an experience to glorify or fantasize about.
On my own person, there really isn't an armor I prefer. I'm a trapeze artist, not a warrior. Armor looks clownish on me. Neither ceremonial nor functional armor I find particularly comfortable or flattering. Stretchy, silky unitards decorated in shimmering frills and glitter appeal more to my taste.
Lich "I, um... Standing as the almighty tallest presented challenges that I did not initially foresee myself grappling with. A part of me always insists I served my empire far better as a high rear general. Even if it meant serving a sub-par tallest like old Pepperoncini. I tried to relive my glory days on the final battle for Hobo 13. I succeeded in a way. My mortal vessel fell. My PAK was retrieved and sent to the most wise Purple brain for refurbishing, BUT, the Irken Empire won in the end. We claimed the planet over the Planet Jackers and to this day it operates as a military training planet. A decent legacy I left behind, I think. It was ending for my story that I had hoped for, more or less. "
Mem "I served late Miyuki for centuries. She told me everything. EVERYTHING. It was both an honor and a burden to be trusted so deeply by my almighty tallest.
I was her coordinator, so there was a long list of personal information I HAD to know about late Miyuki. If I were to discuss this personal information with the wrong drones or ANY other drone depending on the information, I could have been deactivated for treason.
I was required to have an encyclopedic knowledge of her medical records and needs. I was the second drone to learn of her unauthorized pregnancy, the first being her personal medic. We both went to great lengths to hide it.
I was the only drone she told who the siring drone was. Miyuki was a lonely drone, psychologically and physically. Especially physically. She lamented this to me often. I once admired her, but I also pittied her. I never told her this; I was afraid it would insult her." *sighs deeply*
Red "For the longest time, it seemed like the only thing to do in the afterlife was sit, trapped at the long table with the tallests that ruled before me, dwelling on my regrets while sipping on the worst cocktail I've ever tasted. Whenever I finished it, I could see short glimpses of Purple living his life without me in the bottom of the glass. Most of the time, he looked miserable. It was torture to watch.
Then my glass would instantly refill itself. As much as I hated the taste, how was painful ut was to watch Purple mourn me, it was comforting to see him again...so I kept drinking...
Once I figured out how to leave to table, the possibilities seem endless. Turns out I'm not doomed to stay anchored to the drone I was when I was alive. I can go most anywhere. I've seen horrors and wonders that completely blew away my limited imagination.
I learned, with enough effort, I can become the drone I didn't realize I should have strived to be when I was alive.
Right now, I'm training to become a real warrior in Valhalla. Three of the fiercest legendary tallests of ancient Irk are coaching me. It's the most difficult training regimen I've ever endured, but I know it will be worth it when my best self is reunited with Purple's best self. I still check in on him, that's how I know he's on his way.
I love it here. The endless battles are crushing, but I found hope here and that's slowly healing everything.

— Black Swan Kit TL;DR —
All Basic Attack, Skill, and Ultimate deal Wind DMG on enemies.
Arcana = deals Wind DMG and Wind DoT damage at start of enemy turn
Arcana stack = increase DoT dmg%; max of 50 stacks; resets at enemy turn
Basic Attack: Chance to apply an Arcana Stack for each DoT on enemy.
Skill: Chance to apply DEF shred and Arcana stack.
Ultimate: Applies Epiphany on all enemies for 2 turns.
Epiphany = more DoT dmg% and Arcana effects are considered as Wind Shear, Bleed, Burn, and Shock; Arcana stacks don’t reset as long as Epiphany is on enemy.
Talent: when enemies enter battle, applies DoT; each DoT enemy gets, chance to get Arcana stack
If 3+ Arcana stacks = chance to apply Arcana stacks on adjacent targets
If 7+ Arcana stacks = DEF ignore on target and adjacent targets
Technique: chance to apply Arcana stacks on target at start of battle
— How to Play Black Swan in Simplified Form —
Black Swan can’t detonate any DoTs. Her DoT damage depends on enemy speed = backloaded damage. Her kit revolves entirely around increasing the damage enemies take from DoTs at beginning of their turns, by increasing the Arcana stacks on them.
She needs another DoT unit to apply DoTs on enemy and to trigger DoTs outside of enemies’ turns (e.g. Kafka, E4 Sampo, E6 Luka, or Guinaifen’s ultimate). This is possible when Epiphany is on enemies, since her Arcana stacks can also be triggered by other DoT units.
Black Swan Gameplay in Razor Language:
Other DoT units take turns before BS, they apply DoT on enemy
BS takes turn to use skill or basic attack
Enemy gets Arcana stacks from DoTs and DEF shred (if used skill)
Enemy turn starts, DoT DMG and Arcana gets triggered; Arcana stacks reset.
Profit. ( •_•)👍
Black Swan using Ultimate: Use Black Swan’s ultimate first before her DoT allies detonate their own DoT DMG (e.g. using their Ultimate).

From Bonk:
From GuobaCertified:
Light Cone Comparison Difference
From Hunterkee:
From Bonk:
From GuobaCertified:
Theoretical Consensus:
Their calcs are mostly focused in stacking speed on their units.
In Hunterkee’s calcs, the speed ranges from 147 to 163 spd, where the healer is the fastest, while depending on the team comp, Guinaifen is the slowest.
The speed ranges from 153 to 162 spd in Bonk’s calcs, where Kafka and the healer are the slowest, while Ruan Mei is the fastest.
In GuobaCertified’s simulations, the speed ranges from 163 to 168 spd, where Ruan Mei is the fastest, while Kafka is the slowest.
Amongst the three calcs, Hunterkee’s is closer to home because that’s mostly the speed range that F2Ps and low-spender players can achieve for their character builds. GuobaCertified’s, however, looks something you’d only see in whale builds or minmax builds. In all 3 simulations, Black Swan’s speed is somewhere in the middle.
— Does she need Kafka? —
BS could work without Kafka, but BS needs another unit that would trigger her DoTs outside the enemies’ turns. BS loses a lot of damage if her damage only relies on enemies’ turns, with no one to detonate her DoTs outside their turns.
— How much boost does Black Swan bring to Kafka DoT teams? —
From Hunterkee’s calcs, Black Swan brings about 19% boost against single-target enemy and 33% boost on AoE.
— ATK% or SPD on boots? —
Slow BS = ATK% boots
Fast BS = SPD boots
BS in Pure Fiction = SPD boots
Reasoning:
MoC has a limit of 10 cycles for you to defeat the enemies. Whether you use ATK% or SPD boots on her, Black Swan needs time to gain stacks to deal more DoT damage on enemies’ turn start.
However, Pure Fiction needs you to clear the enemies at faster rate. This means you need to clear out the first 5, before the next 5 could spawn in. This is where SPD boots would be more advantageous for her to act more turns before the enemies.
Also, SPD boots if you need to reach the SPD threshold for Glamoth set.
NOTE: There’s this discussion about building Fast BS, Slow BS, and “Classical SPD” BS. “Classical SPD” BS means her having 134 SPD. The post is written by u/L0wpriority here and a counterargument was posted by u/guobacertified here. To know what goes on in their talks, better check those links instead.
However, for me, I’d say to build your BS’s SPD according to what her allies’ SPD are. I’ve linked below some showcase for BS teams and the team order of each. I also explained how those teams are formed and worked together in the Practical Consensus below.
— ATK% or Wind DMG% on orb? —
Wind DMG% orb if no Ruan Mei; ATK% orb if Ruan Mei is in team. Difference is minimal.
Damage difference:
From Hunterkee’s calcs: 0.06%
From Guoba’s: 1.48%-2.75%

Black Swan as Debuffer
Black Swan as debuffer for Dr. Ratio team – this could work if you use BS for her DEF shred only (and you have Ruan Mei in your team); sample showcase done by Rehoo and EdenPlays.
E1 Black Swan as debuffer for Jing Yuan team – E1 Black Swan is like 5* Pela (but with RES reduce instead of DEF shred) for fire, lightning, physical, and wind; sample showcase done by Sleepy here.
Black Swan as debuffer for Blade team – not sure if BS in this showcase is E0 or E1, but BS acts as debuffer for him regardless; sample showcase done by Exodus here.
Black Swan using Freeze Mechanics
Black Swan Freeze team – sample showcase done by Hyrion here. [Team order: Luocha > Pela > Ruan Mei > Black Swan]
Practical Consensus:
In teams with Ruan Mei, Black Swan speed in team showcase mostly ranges from 134 to 140+, while her teammates are ranging from 129 to 153 spd. Sustains are mostly either the slowest or fastest in the team. Other DoT allies are positioned either before or after Black Swan.
Ruan Mei is mostly used in Black Swan teams. This could be explained by Ruan Mei’s talent where she could reduce the SPD needed by Black Swan. With the enemies having 158 spd and reducing to 154 spd due to break, instead of needing 155 spd for Black Swan, she could settle with 145 spd instead.
Asta is used as alternative for Ruan Mei in F2P teams because she could increase the SPD of allies with her ultimate. Both Ruan Mei and Asta are positioned before Black Swan.
But, if no Ruan Mei in team, Black Swan is mostly built with slow build, with her DoT allies stacking as much DoTs as possible for her Arcana stacks. If BS is built with fast build (e.g having 155+ spd), this could alleviate the SP usage of the team because she could opt to use Basics instead.
Black Swan DMG relies on enemy turns, thus avoid using slow debuffs and imprisonment on enemies in her teams. However, she could utilize freeze mechanic and Ruan Mei’s break delay because despite freezing the enemies, the enemies still take their turn before being pushed back to take another later turn. This means that the enemies get two DoT turn triggers after getting frozen.
Some teams are quirky, but eh, it doesn’t matter. As long as their team could 3-star the stage, why make a problem out of it?

Winter season Red Orchestra Killing Floor
For last month I do not play a lot. Mainly it was two games from Tripware. Red Orchestra and Killing Floor. I take this games in steams on sales. It is two games from one developer. Two of them are network battles. In both of them you can play single player maps. And I was doing this. I play in free time. About to play half an hour or about 10-15 min.
Games are about the same idea from one side - they are about maps. And you run them and shoot. But in different stylization settings. And different dynamic tempo.
Red Orchestra – it is was released earlier. There are about maps about second world war. There are lots of maps here. Every map is playing the different ways. There are locations at the field. There is like city. And they are playing very different. There are even maps about vehicles. For example, tank. I more prefer maps like field. And city too. Depending on the map you feel the game different.
There are different weapons. Pistil. Machinegun. Automatic rifle, automatic, machinegun, sub machine gun. Different rifles. Weapons from ww2. So here you need to select a different soldiers. Rifleman, automatic gun soldiers. And two sides USSR and German side. I am for USSR only try to play. Every soldier has its own weapon pack. For example, automatic gun or rifle. There is grenade.
It is playing like a game with a big scale. Scale is big. I played with bots. So, first go to console with tilda. And write addbots 20. I can add onlky20 bots ingame. So it is more fun. Maps are big so by the idea, the more players – more fun it is.
For example, we play as a soldier with rifle. Ussr. Map at the field. For example, summer. And there are maps with winter. They are feels as very different. And, it is summer. Rifle. Run forward. Maps are big, locations is wide. Field, river. Open space. With us also running another soldiers. They are different. It is starting a shooting. You cannot see - what side it goes. Somewhere from a far. You need to sit and find a cover.
And next – to move a point, where you can see enemies. And fire at him. It is good to lay on earth. Do not forget to move.
Game for action is not absolutely dynamically. It is not a super fast quake with fast jumping. But everything is rather realistically. But instead of this, this is like a simulation. Crawl, lay down, go, run. Shoot. Rifle need to be reloaded. This is not a sub machinegun. But instead of this you can have a good aiming.
Automatic weapons are excellent about more closer distance. You rush from a side and start to fire.
Maps are very different. There are maps in winter. Trenches. Trees. And snow. And again start a fire. And you cannot see what place it is fire. Who. Where. Need to move forward. To enemy lines. Or in another case, enemy will control your points. It is about a controlling points to define everything. Absolutely new game looks at winter maps. I think all that goes here, is very realistically.
There is a map like blood forest. Or forest of blood. So, it has a big lines of trenches. And you need to rush into them. And it is going all the time shooting there. It is very fast and so unpredictable. There is a moment of luck or no luck. So here automatic weapon is a good thing. Narrow space. Lots of enemies. And you cannot know where is enemy. You can watch in a wrong direction.
There are cities. In ruins. Destroyed buildings. Whole buildings. Open spaces. City streets. Every type of a map feels unique and each map it is interesting to try out. You don’t know what to expect next time. In a memory these scenes. Winter. You are with automatic rifle is going by snow. Walking though ruins of buildings. And a little further – it is a railway and open space. And just from there, immediately, they start to shoot at you. Enemy is there - behind the wagons. And he is shooting a lot from that position. There are lots of theme.
There is a map with even more destroyed city. There is a map and trenches. And it is summer already. There are different maps for your choice. In a mountains, in field.
Second game – it is Killing Floor. And it is the same format. By network as idea. But you can play alone. And here it is another idea. You are alone or in team. I play it with brother too, by network. And you are against waves of enemies. So here it is about another game. Some dark locations. Zombies and monsters. Experimental some mutants are raging out. And dark as in a horror movie. Locations are waving horror. True horror. Style of Resident Evil, there is something. And here it is more dynamical action.
In this horror it is goes action about shooting enemies. Enemies are different zombies. Big and casual. You are running the map. As by labyrinth. You can buy weapons between the waves of enemies. So here you have also different weapons. And you can find something interesting. Shotguns, automatic rifles, AK47, all of these there are here, pistols exists. Cold weapons also exist. You have a list to select.
It is playing as a cool horror and action. I think this way can be a DOOM. As a main idea. If it will have a story and typical maps. But game is main about a shooting, crossfires. And waves of enemies. In the final it will be a boss. You are inside of a horror movie about zombies and mutants. But with lots of weapons. It can be scary. At some places. But you need to move. You need to shoot.
There are lots of maps too. They are different. There are several game mods. About maps with waves of enemies and mode with small tasks, it looks like tasks. There are also a maps for this mode. It is various, different and good horror action.
There are absolutely scary locations. As some laboratories with black metal around the walls. It is very dark. And rooms are destroyed. And lots of monsters. It is so uncomfortable in a such places.
There locations – oppositive. Like farm. Field. Road. And somewhere in a field the are – zombies and mutants, unholy. It is night also.
Weapons you need to buy for money you get from killed monsters. Between waves of enemies. You can have some pause between next wave. And this way you can try very different weapon. It is very interesting. And there are good pistols and shotguns. So, you start with something simple and next you get something very progressive into your hands. You can take with yourself several types of weapons.
I remember how I play this game with brother for a New Year about several hours. It is very cool and dynamical. Hurricane. Trash. Horror. Shooting. So, we played very normal. Game is rather trasher style. Like Doom, about stylization. Darkness thing. And ocean of shooting. Running a corridors, which are dark. And shoot the monsters. It is happening, that we wait for them for some time. Sit and wait. What side they will go.
Here you can to manage enemy waves, what enemies it will be. Long time of waves with enemies. I do not try this options a lot. But there are some settings. So, it is also rather good game. And you alone also can cool to shake zombies heads. With a pistol with good aiming. First. Second. Everyone straight in a head. With aiming.
There is a game mode like a network – with maps and just enemy waves. And also, there are tasks, you get some tasks. Also, its own maps. Go there. Find a in container something. First you need to open this container. And there are lots of them. In a certain one it will be a required item. Later you will need to go next. And there is a place you need to do also something. To move forward. Location has a normal size. So, you need some time to find. There is a place to put a tactics. And all the time enemies to appear. You need to shoot all the time.
These two games I played in a winter. So now I think I will try something new. And these games I will play with pleasure also!
Playing little games. From time to time i like to play videogames. And write about it. Dima Link is making retro videogames, apps, a little of music, write stories, and some retro more.

On Mass Combat
There are mass combat mechanics in Dark Ages Vampire's Storytellers Guide, but...
Look at it this way. There are a few key principles to fitting mass combat into an RPG, and if you follow them all you don't really need a mass combat system as such.
0) Your players don't want to sit there and wait
This is rule 0 for a reason. I once sat through an interminable Star Wars D20 game in which the GM's particular flavour of brain worms meant he had to roll attacks and damage and reactions for every combatant in a scene before he described what happened. It's not that he had no imagination, it's just it wasn't fair if he didn't roll, and it wasn't fun if it wasn't fair. Or maybe he just hadn't thought about adapting the standard "declare, roll, describe" process of RPGs for an encounter with dozens of active participants. Either way, it was a terrible way to spend an afternoon - and I like rolling dice for attack after attack after attack, when it's a wargame. When I turned up to roleplay, it's just false advertising.
1) Only the PCs' dice really matter
You're running this scene for your players. They're rolling for their characters. Dice that have nothing to do with their characters don't need to be rolled. Really, this is an extension of Rule 0, but turned sideways so it becomes advice rather than an excuse for an anecdote. I'm a big fan of "only players roll" in general for RPGs and for the way the ST systems work, it really helps to set the players a roll against a target number and have margin of success or failure decide consequences.
2) Just because it's combat doesn't mean you have to roll combat pools
Mass combat is a chance for Leadership to shine. In V5 I would consider something like Resolve or Composure + Leadership to be the best possible roll for a player trying to command a mass battle. In older editions that don't have the good stat grid, sub in a Mental Attribute of your choice - I'd say Perception for the first round, Wits if something surprising happens, Intelligence to close the engagement favourably. If your player isn't in a leadership position I think it's better to roll a few Stamina + Melee/Brawl/Firearms/Atheletics rolls and inflict superficial/bashing damage equal to the margin of failure than to sit there modelling it all out exactly with the four rolls per attack that conventional combat needs. You could even break out a Composure + Survival for a character who just does not want to be there. Again, I have V5 brainrot and I know it, but "three and done" is such a good way to stop system creep and keep the sessions moving.
3) What are you using mass combat for in story terms?
Maybe this one should have come first, I 'unno, but this is the thing about mass combat - a lot of the time the systems seem written to simulate it happening without asking what it's doing in the story. Is it a command challenge, for PCs who are trying to command a small army for whatever reason? Is it a social challenge, for PCs who have to lead that army and keep up its morale? Is it an endurance challenge, for PCs who are built to throw hands to a degree no mortal could match? Or is it something that's happening around the PCs, a kind of environmental hazard that they need to negotiate on their way to achieve something else? (This is my favourite way to use mass combat - my Dark Ages game had, er, several city sacking sessions during which PCs were trying to traverse the fires and the furore to rescue so and so or stop such and such escaping or simply to escape.)
I hope all this has shown that you can include a mass battle in your games without needing a ton of new rules (that you won't use very often so they're a faff to learn, internalise and run at table anyway). Quite often, less is more, and you can boil down a situation into something you can represent with unusual uses of the conventional rules.

The Star Rail f2p challenge gang's crit Aventurine got a workout today in Simulated Universe, using Elation resonance as per usual. Pics are from the run where they were missing the better gold aftertaste card but still happily whomp-whomped everything in sight. They got better cards on the second run and Gambler-kun managed a 153k follow-up during Cocolia. How you like dem chips, madam? :D
White stat chart is his in-battle stats with his shield on, during a regular (non-SU) battle with nobody else in the party. His crit rate should be higher, mostly because his defense should be higher… but it's hard to raise defense without his 5-star light cone, especially when relics and ornaments want to roll everything but defense for once in their lives. The main account Aventurine has rolled a decent amount of defense in subs, so he got lucky there (plus spoiled baby has his light cone).
Gonna be running SU a lot this week to try and upgrade this guy's rope, cuz that thing is trash.

ArcV Month: Catch-Up Mode!
Hooo boy was I excited to hear about this. I loved Arc V, and am pleasantly surprised to hear it has a month of prompts. I have no art talent whatsoever, so get ready for a month of text post love gushing.
(heads up, I'm gonna be using sub names. I tried watching the dub after finishing the series subbed initially and it was just not the vibe)
Day 2: Bracelet Girls
These four are an ode to wasted potential. Early Yuzu is probably the strongest lady friend the franchise has ever had. Yes, above Akiza. She's got her own goals and motivations, a solid design, and a believable friendship with Yuya, feeling very appropriately like "our parents are friends so we were forced to hang out a lot when we were little." Trying to figure out who Yuto is without tipping off Yuya off, losing to Masumi and using it to motivate her own growth, and actively seeking out Sora's tutelage all showed her agency, something I to that point didn't expect out of side characters much. Admittedly, that started to fade as soon as she was kidnapped by Yugo in the Battle Royale, but their interaction was a lot of fun, and being thrust into a literal alternate reality would probably curb my independence too.
Serena. Bruh SERENA tho? She was perfect. Fiercely independent. Rebellious. Clever. Interdimensional terrorist-turned-Lancer. Banger outfit design, both in her modified Academia uniform and the street clothes she's in after. Not quite as much focus, due to the cast expanding significantly not long after her introduction, but damn if she didn't steal the show every time she was on screen. She's probably the most competent Lancer, aside from Reiji, and probably in my top ten characters of the series.
While we didn't get much of Rin or Ruri, I can firmly say that Ruri has one of the best designs in the franchise. I'm a sucker for purple, black, and bird motifs (no foreshadowing there whatsoever). I do however enjoy that all 4 girls had functional decks. In the TCG, WindWitch was probably the best generic synchro package you could run until P.U.N.K. came out, Lyrulisc/TriBrigade was meta relevant for YEARS, and while Lunalight isnt quite the powerhouse it used to be, it's still probably the best thing you can do in pauper, and it showcased some of the best card design choices of the early pendulum era; high consistency, recyclability, and the first twinkling of backrow having effects when banished from the graveyard. Unfortunately, it's only competitive success came from duel links or the era where it enabled a Rank4 toolbox, getting Tiger banned, taking the Fusion build out of rouge playability. Melodious...well it wasn't ever truly relevant but I did have a buddy who played it as a floodgate simulator so I have a strong aversion towards it.
I dunno. That's probably it for this one.

[Review] Steel Diver: Sub Wars (3DS)
More like Sub Bores, am I right???
Some time after making Star Fox 2 for Nintendo and seeing it cancelled, core members of Argonaut Dylan Cuthbert and Giles Goddard went their separate ways. Cuthbert went on to found Q-Games and ended up making some other Star Fox games, whereas Goddard did some other Nintendo projects before starting the company Vitei. They created the tepidly-received 3DS launch title Steel Diver, a sidescrolling submarine game with gyro and strategy modes.
Three years later in 2014 their follow-up was Steel Diver: Sub Wars, Nintendo’s first free-to-play title. Gameplay had been refocused to a first person view and the central focus was on making an online multiplayer title that any 3DS owner could play, whether they had paid or not. Premium content included extra single player levels and a bunch of extra submarines. I never played the multiplayer mode but I can’t imagine it was too astounding; Nintendo’s online infrastructure has never held up well for real-time games, especially in high-ping Australia. I just played solo: to be honest, the only reason I played this right now was to scout for Star Fox vibes.
It was well publicised at the time that Peppy Hare of Star Fox makes a cameo appearance, shilling the premium content if you’re a free-play bozo in the same vein as the Streetpass rabbits and Badge Arcade bunny (the git…). This meaningless cameo doesn’t contribute much; the other “characters” are caricatured humans but the game otherwise has a quite bland military theme. The other Star Fox connection is the inclusion of Lylat Wars’ Blue Marine, which I used throughout the campaign until its low durability proved too much of a liability in the final mission.
While you could argue that piloting a sub in a 3D environment isn’t too dissimilar to taking an Arwing out in first-person on an All-Range stage, in practice Sub Wars is much closer to a simulation game. The subs move ponderously, and your encounters with enemy boats and submersibles are careful and tactical. Unlike in the first Steel Diver, your core actions are mapped to buttons but also represented on the touchscreen with a nice crusty control panel clustered around a sonar display. It does a decent job getting across the feel of piloting a weighty metal craft while outmanoeuvring fellow subs, but it’s not overly exciting.
Sadly the campaign feels like an afterthought, or maybe more of a warmup for the “real game” of online or local PvP. There’s only seven stages, although each has three difficulty levels (you’ll need to hit up multiple of these to get the required medals to unlock later stages). Not only are these short but they don’t really do much that’s interesting, mostly being shallow open sea combat arenas or corridor shooting galleries. Two stand out: the Morse code test that has you signalling words in rapid succession (this mechanic is amusingly the only way to communicate in multiplayer) which as a minigame is a nice change of pace; and the floating fortress which felt the most Star Fox-esque. The battle involves waiting for panels to open to shoot into the vulnerable reactor, while dodging torpedoes.
This fortress is basically the only fantastical element in the game. I was reminded of Jaws: Ultimate Predator, another 3DS game I played last year, with its murky sea almost devoid of interesting detail and basic “kill all the boats” objectives. As with that game I found myself wishing for it to go harder and be weirder, for level design or missions to be more complex and engaging. Alas.
Perhaps my hopes as a Star Fox fan coming into this couldn’t be met by a multiplayer-focused microtransaction-fuelled budget submarine sim. It is what it is, I just found it uninteresting. I do acknowledge the mismatch, that I wasn’t playing it the intended way, but shutdown of the online servers is imminent and many sub designs and customisable crew members are locked behind multiplayer play. Soon enough the whole game will be obsolete… but all games are worth preserving, even if I wasn’t thrilled with this one.

Ideas spinning in my head and they're all about Pearl
So it's implied by Pix and seemingly confirmed when she receives the memories that Pearl is the mortal incarnation of the apotheosizied Farming Queen Pearl, Santa Perla
Saint Pearl is worshipped in farming aspects as well as as the moon goddess (I headcannon that tying into her sunflower symbology in depicting the moon and its phases as a sunflower tracking the sun across the sky) and possibly as a combat goddess considering how much she enjoys it.
Pearl was unaffected by the continuous nights without sleep as the moon encroached in S8 (it would be strange for the simulation to account for that but it did happen) and in last life, as her mental state slipped, she seemed to bring death wherever she went, possibly reflecting a synchronicity in domains meaning that Santa Perla is viewed as a reaper of life, with a particular fondness for the slain as they make excellent sparring partners.
She also referred to her dogs as 'dogs of war' and with the combination of moon and wolf imagery and battle madness paints the picture of Pearl being very few steps from becoming a werewolf
Technically, as often the further back you go the transformation had mostly to do with an animal sacrificed or bonded to (at the earliest, both) she would be a hybeena shifter durring her time feral in the Amphibian wilderness
Always fun to have a bit of Pearl thought. :P
As Hermit!Pearl being the reincarnation of E1!Pearl - or at least of her mortal self - & all that entails is canon now, that's absolutely a thing in the AU. This - barring dimensional time shenanigans, puts Grian & Pearl's current ages in the sub-1,000 years category.
Them being younger than Andrias won't change things, though.
So if our Pearl is the reborn form of Santa Perla/Saint Pearl - the farming/moon/combat goddess (I like your headcanons, here), does that mean she gets bad vibes whenever she looks at Amphibia's moon? Nothing she can quite place due to limited access to divine power, but as she has her past life memories she might recognize it as divine intuition.
Also, though the idea of Pearl as a reaper goddess - or the mortal incarnation of one - has its whole own set of implications, it draws to mind the Amphibia AU where Anne's literally the Grim Reaper. More than one character mistaken for an "angel of death", at least.
But the point that got my attention the most was Werewolf!Pearl.
Maybe it wasn't a thing before - Grian would've known - but cut off from any divine spark & left to go feral for literal months... Were-hybeena!Pearl isn't too outside the realm of possibility, given player tendency to adapt to new surroudings ("skin changes").
It'd make for an interesting episode, i'd think. Whether it remains after Pearl's brought to her senses is another question entirely.
