Fairly new to the area, what are some chill places to check out in STL? I’m in the Bevo area.
you're fairly close to Soulard which is a fun area if you're into music, drinking, eating out etc. Soulard also does events fairly often.
Union Station with The Wheel and our aquarium is also a fun place to go, they have mini golf, ice cream, food, and around this time of year they do events as well. They're also going under construction to add a bunch of new rides, games, etc.
I personally love Forest Park! Our zoo is there (which is FREE) along with the art museum. It's a great place to walk around, have a picnic or read a book. Forest Park also has The Muny that's open in Summer and Spring months, they do Broadway/musical type shows outside. Then there's the boathouse, which is a restaurant and place where you can paddle boat

Play It Cool - Tyson Jost (38/n)
Pairing: Tyson Jost x OFC (AJ)

Author's Notes: I'm BACK! Decided to hit up a few of the closer Sabres games to me last week, catching both the Dallas and St. Louis games. I think I'm still trying to catch up on sleep... but it was so much fun. The Sabres fans I met at both games were a blast to cheer with. If you happened to see Waldo (of Where's Waldo fame) at the Buffalo/StL game, you found me ;) Thank you all for being patient while I took a little break from writing. And It's nearly 3am so I'm clearly back to my old self - any typos are mine and I'll probably fix them in the morning!
So where were we? Ahhh yes, Tyson and AJ found out the apartment they wanted was available... but he also has a roadie coming up. Will that throw a wrench in the plans to get moved out of the hotel and into a new home?
The next few days were a blur as Tyson was alternating between home and away games, while AJ was finalizing things for a potential move to the new apartment. She had taken the lead on getting things set up, wanting to make the transition as smooth as possible considering it was the middle of the season - moving anytime is stressful. AJ wasn’t connecting the dots though that this is the man that flies all over the continent to play hockey, waking up in different cities, different beds, wasn’t a huge deal. She was probably making it out to be more detrimental to him than it really was.
But more about the apartment, as soon as AJ took Tyson to see it, he knew that was the one. The property manager hadn’t even shown them past the first two rooms but the giddiness on AJ’s face was enough to tell him it was going to be home, at least for now. The master bedroom was huge, with an en suite bath, including both a shower and a bathtub.
(“No more waiting for you to get out of the tub so I can shower, yeah?”
“You’re just as guilty of soaking in a nice hot bath. Don’t think I didn’t notice the missing bath bomb from my basket.”
“Can’t prove it was me.”
“Your legs and torso were slightly shimmery and you smelled of lavender, Jost.”
Tyson sheepishly grinned.)
There was a guest room in case friends or family came into town. Another room that AJ could set up her computer gear, and also work on some art projects. The two figured that a sofa would be super comfy in there as well, one that could turn into a bed for even more guests if necessary. The kitchen was more than large enough for the two of them to dance while doing dishes.
AJ’s favorite part was how many windows lined the walls. She already could envision stands and shelves of plants flanking them, letting the leaves soak up the natural light that flooded the rooms through various hours of the day. To the west, Key Bank Arena and Lake Erie were visible in the distance.
Hearing of her plans, he couldn’t say no. On top of it making AJ happy, it was a short drive to both the practice rink and the arena. It was a trendy, renovated part of town that was busy with restaurants and things to see and do. They’d be up high enough on the twelfth floor to not be bothered with the street noise. It all just felt right.
Needless to say, they signed a lease that day, and would be able to move in within weeks. This posed a small issue for AJ, but she wasn’t going to make mention of it. At least this time around, Tyson insisted on hiring movers to bring all their stuff up, especially with it being on such a high floor. AJ would just have to direct traffic and then unpack boxes, with all the heavy stuff being put into place already. She wasn’t about to argue about that this time around.
With a loss at home against Florida, the team hit the road for Chicago, losing in OT to one of the league’s worst teams. The next two games were at home, against the Islanders and Ducks. The first game was a win, with Tyson netting himself an assist. The next day found Tyson at practice, and AJ helping the movers get furniture put into place, and boxes all loaded up into various rooms. The remaining items at the hotel were starting to dwindle as AJ moved most of their belongings over.
Coming back from practice, Tyson found the hotel room missing AJ as she was in the process of moving some stuff the few blocks over to the new building. He sighed, looking at the garland and lights that still lined the ceiling of their room. Gently he pulled the hooks from the walls, looping the lights and shiny garland neatly and placing it in one of the empty bins. He honestly was going to miss it at the new place, even though that very same new place was home.
Even when AJ came back to pick up more stuff, the lack of twinkling lights reflecting against the walls made the place feel empty.
With most everything moved over, the last few things in the room were just pillows, a few sets of clothes, and the last few items needed in the bathroom. AJ had made mention it was going to take a while to get some stuff unpacked, and with Tyson going on the road here in a few days, that maybe they could officially “move in” once he returned. Her outward intent was to get most everything unpacked while he was gone, but that was going to be a little difficult as she actually had some plans already in the works for something else.
The two slept hard that night in the hotel, after moving and unpacking a few boxes, as well as rearranging some furniture. The next morning, AJ was back at it, while Tyson had morning skate before the Anaheim game. Taking some time off, she snagged a ticket and made her way to the arena to cheer on the Sabres with a 6-3 victory. Tyson had a pretty good night, another assist and some pretty good numbers in the box score.
One final night together in the hotel… AJ had issues keeping Tyson focused on getting packed up for the four game roadie, which would send him to Dallas, St. Louis, Winnipeg, and ending in St. Paul. Tyson’s interests were more about some late night shenanigans to literally go out with a bang before officially moving into the new apartment. While getting his backpack filled and his suit laid out for the trip, AJ was trying to secretly pack her own backpack, giving the reason of “oh this is my last bag of stuff to go over.”
Little did Tyson know that, while technically true, that bag was going to be making some of the same stops on the roadie.
That Sunday morning, Tyson had morning practice before heading to the airport. In the same time frame, AJ go the last of their stuff moved from the hotel, and she herself headed to the airport, boarding a different plane. She felt awful for what she was about to do.
AJ: Hey babe, I’m pretty exhausted and am going to crash for a bit. Text me when you land?
She wasn’t lying. The motion sickness pills she downed as she got to the airport were kicking in and she likely was going to sleep on the plane. But all the same, AJ felt a little dirty about it.
Right before takeoff, AJ’s phone, which was supposed to be in airplane mode (seriously, who actually puts their phone in airplane mode when flying?), buzzed in her hand.
Tyson: Sleep well babe, only a few more sleeps until we’re both back in our bed. Heading to the airport here in a bit. Ily
A smile hit AJ’s face, thinking about having a space that was truly theirs, with their own things, and room to move around, and could set up everything the way they wanted. As the plane took off, she fidgeted with the engagement ring on her finger, focusing on it, rather than the upward movement of the plane that made her dizzy. Once at cruising altitude, AJ indeed fell asleep to one of Tyson’s house mixes. It took the passenger next to her tapping her on the shoulder to wake her up as they were landing at DFW - what felt like minutes later, but really was hours.
Collecting her bag and trekking through the airport, AJ found her way to the Orange Line, and took the train into Dallas. It was a quiet day on the train, considering it was not a weekday. Watching out the windows, she took in views she’d never seen before. Hopping off at Victory Station, which spit her out right by the arena, leaving the rest of the way to her hotel as about a half mile walk. Checking in, she made her way to the third floor and faceplanted on the bed.
Tyson: On the ground in Dallas. Miss you already. How’s unpacking?
AJ looked around and saw her bag sitting on the ottoman in her room.
AJ: Honestly haven’t really unpacked much. Kind of relaxing at the moment honestly.
Tyson: Understand completely, no big rush. I think we’re going out for dinner. Talk more later?
AJ: Of course. Have fun! (heart emoji)
Looking at her watch, AJ was trying to figure out what to do with her evening. She didn’t want to chance somehow bumping into Tyson going out for dinner, but at the same time, everything nearby was stupidly pricey in her eyes. In a last minute decision, she put in an order online for Shake Shack, and walked to Crescent Court to pick it up. Thankfully, unlike the last time AJ was at Crescent Court with Jess the year before, there were no team buses or players around. With food in tow, she arrived back at her hotel, sprawling out on the sofa to enjoy dinner and a movie.
It was driving her nuts though knowing Tyson was maybe a mile away, but she’d see him soon enough.
With a few texts, both insisted they were needing sleep, and that they’d talk more Monday.
Snagging breakfast at the hotel, AJ contemplated what to do before the game that evening. Checking out what was nearby, she walked to the Dallas Museum of Art, taking in a wide variety of pieces by famous artists. At the same time Tyson was a half mile away getting ready for morning skate, with a strange feeling. He couldn’t pinpoint what it was, but something definitely felt odd.
Tyson missed AJ, but it wasn’t the same as other roadies. He had butterflies in his stomach for some reason.
After finishing up at the museum, AJ got in a nap before getting cleaned up and heading to the arena. There were a surprising number of Sabres fans at American Airlines Center. Getting down to the glass on the Sabres’ warmup side, AJ knew where Tyson would be warming up. She had a tiny sign that would fit in her backpack she traveled with.
The fans congregated together, chatting about where everyone was from and who everyone’s favorite players were. While she agreed that Thompson and Dahlin were great players, AJ made mention that Tyson Jost was her favorite. The guy with the kid next to her looked at her weird, but another person piped up, commenting on what a great pickup he was for the Sabres. It made her heart happy.
Looking around the end of the ice, there were a number of other signs for players, including a couple more for Tyson. Impatiently waiting until the 16:00 mark was tough for AJ, but the team took to the ice tossing pucks at Anderson playing in his 700th game. Her eyes followed Tyson around, where they did their initial drills. Tyson went to the other side of the glass, reading a poster another fan had, offering a choice of candy, probably for a puck. He skated back to the bench with something and tossed it to the equipment manager before grabbing a puck and starting his own stickhandling drill.
Not even paying attention, he drilled the puck into the boards directly under AJ’s feet and caught the rebound on his stick. Looking up, he saw a small poster, and then looked up even further to see who was holding it. The smile on his face couldn’t be contained as he skated closer, mouthing “Hey you!” as AJ gave a tiny wave. Leaning down, he got a puck on his stick and sent it over the glass to the kid directly next to her, fist bumping him through the glass. The butterflies in Tyson’s stomach from earlier now made sense.
The guy who previously looked at AJ weird for saying Jost was her favorite tapped her on the shoulder.
“What was that?”
“We’ve known each other since he played for Colorado. Thought I’d surprise him at the game.” AJ chuckled.
With warmups complete, and in fact, Buffalo stayed on the ice longer than the warmup clock lasted just to get under the skin of the Stars, AJ found her seat behind the Sabres’ bench. Luckily it was filled with other Sabres fans and she made some new friends that night. The game started off not so great with the Stars scoring within the first two minutes, but the Sabres fired back later in the first. The game went silent in the 2nd, but in the third period, the Sabres scored early to have a 2-1 lead. Later in the period, the Stars tied it up. Throughout the game, Tyson glanced back finding AJ cheering for the team in white and blue.
The Sabres held on to take it to OT.
“I’m standing up,” Dan, AJ’s new friend sitting next to her, stated. “With our top lines out there 3-on-3, this isn’t going to last long. We’re standing up.”
Everyone stood up behind the bench, which pissed off the row behind them, but it was well worth it. Power scored fifty-six seconds into the overtime period, giving the Sabres the win. The Sabres fans cheered, while the Stars fans were left sulking as they walked the stairs to the concourse of the arena. The team piled into the dressing room, and headed for the airport as they were to play St. Louis the next day.
Tyson: EGGO you’re crazy for flying out here! I love you for it though, made my night.
AJ: Crazy about YOU! Fun game. Wish I were flying with you tonight.
Tyson: Me too. When do you fly out?
AJ had to word this very carefully.
AJ: My flight is at 11:15. Figured I could at least score some breakfast before I leave (lol emoji)
Tyson: Text me when you land? We’re taking off.
AJ: You know it babe. Safe travels, love you!
AJ was asleep when the next text hit her phone, of Tyson landing in St. Louis. He was glad she seemingly slept through it. As much as he still loved getting to say “text you when I land” and then doing so, he always felt a little pang of guilt if she’d text back at 3am wherever she was in comparison. At the same time he did enjoy some of her sleepy text typos, and imagining her bleary-eyed in bed texting him back.
What did wake AJ up was her alarm so she would make it downstairs to, yes, get breakfast, pack up, and take the train back to DFW. Not thinking fully about the weather when she packed, as soon as she took a few steps onto the sidewalk of Harry Hines Blvd, it started raining, and she did not pack her umbrella. Walking under overhangs as much as she could, which was tough around the arena because there aren’t any, AJ was becoming more and more soggy as she reached the train stop. Thankfully she made it just in time for the Orange line back, and sat back as it poured down rain the whole way to the airport. Once through security, she sat next to a window with a mint hot chocolate from Dunkin watching the rain.
A quick text was sent as she boarded the plane, and was finally in the air. A bit later, she was on the ground again. AJ’s Lyft driver was awesome, the two chatted the whole way from the airport to her destination. However, that text she said she’d send was a little delayed.
AJ: Hey, on the ground. How was your flight?
Tyson: It was alright, got in around 1am like you saw. Yours?
AJ: Not bad. Hoped I’d get some sleep but didn’t. Oh damn it’s almost time for you to get ready to play, isn’t it? Kick some ass tonight, Jost. (heart emoji)
Tyson: Only because you said so. Going to miss you in the stands, last night spoiled me.
AJ: You’ll see me soon enough. I’ll be watching the game, cheering you on!
Tyson stared at the last message, getting that odd feeling he had in Dallas again.
“Surely she isn’t here… no… she went back home, right?”
A few of the guys in the dressing room noticed how antsy Tyson was to get out onto the ice for warmups. Kyle was giving him shit for the fact AJ was in Dallas to surprise him the night before, and how he was acting like his kids do when they are excited to be going out for ice cream. The feeling in Tyson’s stomach wasn’t subsiding. He was fidgeting with the tape on his stick waiting for the moment they could take the ice.
Keeping his normal focus was difficult as warmups began, and he started scanning the glass. There were a number of fans, both for the Sabres and Blues already lined up. With a deep breath he went back to doing drills, trying to push the butterflies down. Okie skated up along the boards and stopped, looking back and winking at the person behind him.
As the team drills wound down, Tyson went back toward the center line doing some stretches, when someone caught his eye. Squinting, suddenly his eyes went wide as he continued warming up his legs. Hopping up, he grabbed a puck to do his drills between the blue line and the faceoff circle.
Finishing up, he attempted to get the puck to hop onto his stick blade, but he missed not once, but twice. Looking up, his face was a little flushed as he smiled at AJ, still fumbling around. Reaching down, trying to just simply pick up the puck with his gloves, Tyson still was struggling. Finally with the puck in his hands, and his face now full on blushing, he got the puck over to the kids slapping the glass next to her. With a look back and wink at AJ, he felt like the luckiest man on Earth that his fiancee was at the game again, even if she weren’t behind the bench this time around.
There were definitely less Sabres fans at this game in St. Louis than in Dallas, but AJ made the best of it with her #LETSGOBUFFALO sign as she sat behind the Sabres Attack Twice goal. What made it even better was the 5-3 win over the Blues… especially with AJ’s history with games in St. Louis.
What made the night less stellar was that St. Louis was under a winter storm warning until noon the next day, and AJ’s flight was leaving the next morning at 5:40AM, with her Lyft coming at 3:10AM. She was terrified of one of three things happening:
She was going to oversleep, the original plan was actually to stay awake until her ride arrived.
Her ride was going to cancel and she would have no way to get to the airport on time.
The airport was going to shut down due to the weather.
Thankfully none of these happened, and she did in fact make it to the airport in time. After getting through security (being harassed by a rather rude TSA agent that thought she had something on her ankle, which, surprise, there was nothing but her ankle there), she made her way to Starbucks to snag a drink and prepare for the first of two flights. The snow was really starting to come down though and made her worried.
Just like Tyson’s gut was telling him something the previous few days, her’s was now talking to her.
Tyson and the team had flown out of St. Louis after the game thankfully, and he was safe on the ground in Winnipeg.
Knowing he was asleep, AJ just sent a quick note that she was at the airport, indeed going back to Buffalo, as much as she wanted to continue the roadie with him. She was nervous about the weather, hoping to make her connection as she was already delayed 40 minutes. The plus side, the flight wasn’t full and she ended up getting her own row on that flight.
On the ground in Dallas again, she was stressing hardcore about the connection, it was in a completely different terminal. But the flight deities smiled upon AJ that day and somehow getting out of the jetway and down the hallway, she found herself in Terminal B, right near her gate that had not yet started boarding.
AJ: Made my connection, heading home to Buffalo. (heart emoji)
Tyson looked sleepily at his phone screen with one eye, then put it back on the nightstand next to him. A warm feeling filled his chest upon seeing AJ call Buffalo “home.”

Ghost Kitchen Concept - The Hill Food Co. - St. Louis - Launched
The Hill Food Co. - A Ghost kitchen concept has officially launched in St. Louis, Missouri, with early signs of success. ST. LOUIS, MO (STL.News) A ghost kitchen concept has officially launched in St. Louis, Missouri, with some early signs of success. The parent company refers to itself as a food hall. The concept is attractive to almost everybody that has seen the facility. It is a new concept in a state-of-the-art facility. It has spent millions of dollars to rehab an old, outdated commercial building into this hall of opportunity for restaurant owners and entrepreneurs. The concept is that the facility focuses on the property for the restaurant owners. The restaurant owners focus on quality food and marketing their menu online for delivery or pickup. The restaurants do not need servers, bussers, bartenders, or hostesses. The restaurants need cooks, prep, and packaging. The restaurants have fewer responsibilities and fewer distractions and can concentrate on the most important factors: good food with quality service. Ghost kitchens protect the public by providing daily oversight, ensuring health and safety standards are followed to protect their business license and multi-million dollar investment. The owner of the property, the ghost kitchen, focuses on taking the food from the kitchen to the processing center to pass it off to the customers who choose to pickup or to the delivery drivers. Additionally, the ghost kitchen ensures health and safety standards are met to comply with all federal, state, protect the public, and public as well as to protect their multi-million dollar investment. I have personal experience with the facility because my significant other has a kitchen in this facility. She was the first to open and the first kitchen to receive an online order. She has 30+ years of experience in the restaurant industry and currently owns four restaurants that are successful. She has spent the first week in this location cooking and setting up the kitchen. She loves the simplicity of the concept because it allows her to do what she loves; cook food. Therefore, I have witnessed the benefit to the restaurant owners. Furthermore, I see the benefit, which is that the restaurant has oversight. The local government inspects and has standards that must be met, and the owners of the ghost kitchen have employees on-site daily to ensure the facility complies with those health and safety procedures. When you compare this to individual restaurant facilities, they have no oversight other than health inspections once a year or even less the local government's accountability is not sufficient to supervise thousands of restaurants in this metro area on a regular basis. After personally engaging in this concept and assisting my significant other, I have discovered that this is the biggest benefit to the public. Health and safety standards commonly go overlooked in individual restaurant locations. Additionally, a benefit for startup restaurants is that this concept makes it more cost-efficient to open a business and allows the restaurant owner to focus on the most critical aspect of the business; customer satisfaction. Real estate has gotten cost prohibitive to many startups as property owners continue to raise rent due to unrealistic values, which is hurting small businesses and startups. Currently, out of 22 kitchens, they have leased 9, according to reliable sources, and showing the space to new prospective restaurant owners daily. fuck it I'm annotating this
"The changing weather" -> tbh I think this one is a little overstated, the past Friday and Saturday nearly fucking killed me so like, they KNOW about extreme weather here. I do think they have less of a concept of the extreme highs and lows but bc of climate change they have more of an understanding than they perhaps used to.
"Gooey butter cake" -> do you know those desserts that are basically just various configurations of too much butter and sugar? That's St. Louis's.
"Toasted ravioli" -> Say THANK YOU ITALIAN IMMIGRANTS
"Ballpark Village" -> St. Louis is big on baseball because of our premiere team the Cardinals and Busch Stadium (named after the beer company, or rather, the same family who owns the beer company; they also own Grant's Farm). Ballpark Village is right outside Busch Stadium and it is fucking intense; without doxxing myself, I live kinda near it, and my mom and I went to one of the restaurants there on a game night, and it was. An experience.
"A SLU hockey hoodie" -> SLU is St. Louis University. To be honest, I don't know anything about the hockey hoodies.
"Any girl's club volleyball tryout" -> To be honest I would have assumed Those Types Of Girls exist all over the US but I haven't done research into it so I couldn't tell you. But yeah. Those Types of Girls are also something.
"Elborough" (?) -> I have nothing. Tried googling it, the only thing that's come up is El Burro Loco which is a Mexican restaurant I can't remember if I tried or not; I know where it is though.
"A singular conversation with any St. Louis private school boy" -> YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH My sister's brother is an STL private school boy and he's fucking insane. I don't see him very often - hell it has to have been a few years by now - but OH MY GOD. My other sister (also not related to him) had him on Snap and apparently he really is Like That. I can't describe it.
"The Black Frat" -> I honestly have no idea what this is but that's just because I don't pay attention to social media or dumb news. All I found on it was this video.
"The Stanley Cup Parade in 2019" -> The Stanley Cup is what you get for winning at hockey, and our team, the Blues, had never won it. Ever. It was a big fucking deal when they won in 2019. The city went insane. My Canadian stepmother was fucking shocked by how much we cared about hockey; everyone else was too, because before that year, no one gave a shit.
"All the construction on the highways" -> I feel like this one might be overstated too but 55 is fucking bad, guys.
"Making a left turn on Manchester road" -> Somehow despite having a very limited map of the city in my head, I have this one. And yeah it's terrifying. Manchester is like, the size of a highway at some points, and then also 2 lanes at other points (and idk if there's still construction but there was this summer and it was big shit so they had even more lanes closed) and it is not fun. I have to take Manchester to get to my orthodontist.
"Ted Drewes, especially during Christmas time" -> Ted Drewes sells frozen custard (and yes this is significantly different from ice cream don't @ me, I've had this fight before). You might think, oh, they close for the winter, no? They don't have a proper interior, people wouldn't just line up outside for a frozen dessert in the cold. You would be wrong. Not only do they remain open during the winter, they also sell Christmas trees, so it's actually a really fun place to go.
"15 minutes in the City Museum" -> Here's a picture of the City Museum from the outside
(yes, you can go in the bus. there's also a Ferris Wheel on the roof not pictured.)
"If they brought up Stan Kroenke in conversation" -> I'm only mostly certain that's the name they say, I had to google it. I have no idea who that man is other than what his Wikipedia says. I have a feeling that's a sports thing.
Most of the tiktoks my sister sends me are dumb but she was so fucking real for this one

Radio Decameron |1.16.21 & 1.23.21
Secret Radio | 1.16.21 & 1.23.21 | Hear it here.
1. Sylvain Sylvain - “I’m So Sorry”
I never feel right saying “RIP” or “rest in peace” about an actual human being who is no longer with us. But I will say: I hope Sylvain Sylvain died content with the music he made and the life he lived.
2. The Honeydrippers - “Impeach the President”
And ideally, then we would never have to hear from or talk about that accursed criminal ever again. We recorded this section before the inauguration — may we never forget how ALL 50 STATE CAPITOLS plus the US Capitol itself were being guarded against attacks by American citizens on that day — and shit was tense there for many days. As of this writing, things are… unviolent. It feels like a lull to me, honestly, rather than, say, all that stuff being in the rearview. It is not.
But meanwhile, check that beat out!
I love how Roy Charles is trying to convince them to stop demanding, but they just keep insisting. This song is brilliant, and the playing is — c’mon now — unimpeachable.
3. Niagara - “Tchiki boum”
We heard this song in the film “Perdrix,” known as “The Bare Necessity” in the version we saw via SLIFF. They’re dancing in a club to this, and it’s just a really distractingly good song for the scene.
- C.K. Mann - “Mber Papa”
We just recently learned about Essiebons by learning that he passed just this August. He was a producer of legendary status to a lot of people. Listening around his music we came upon C.K. Mann and this righteous track, which Essiebons produced. I think this is a pretty ultra track, really. Every instrument really kicks it out. I hope Essiebons died happy.
4. Rocky Horror Picture Show - “Hot Patootie / Bless My Soul”
New president, feeling kinda upbeat and hopeful. Really just starting to feel the tips of my soul from where it’s been getting singed. It’s going to take a long time to scab over what happened to us all over the last four years. I’m so fucking glad he’s gone that it makes me really love that rock n roll!
5. Moon Unit & Frank Zappa - “Valley Girl”
Tell you what: we watched the movie “Zappa” recently as part of a film festival, and I highly recommend watching it at your earliest opportunity. It is absolutely for people who do, and for people who do not, love his music. He shows up as a really interesting character throughout his whole life. The film skips through his songs with amazing speed, which actually works really well in his case. This song is with his daughter Moon Unit, who actually slid a handwritten note under his door introducing herself by name and saying that she wanted to collaborate on a project. They did this, and while Zappa was in Europe, Moon Unit brought the acetates to KROC and the song became an instant hit for them. Meanwhile he was writing for multiple orchestras.
6. Jacques Dutronc - “Sur Une Nappe de Restaurant”
This is totally not how I tune my drums, but I love how Dutronc’s drums sound in every song. I mean, the whole band of course, but there is a physical space both in the drum part as written and in the recorded texture of the whole that is just deep and wide.
7. Nyame Bekyere - “Medley: Broken Heart / Aunty Yaa / Omo Yaba (Nzema)”
This is another discovery via Essebiens, who released it on Essiebons Enterprises. It’s such an intense track! The cover artwork is by K. Frimpong, who plays a crazy Cuban guitar style on his own albums.
8. Ros Serey Sothea - “Tngai Neas Kyom Yam Sra (Today I Drink Wine)”
This is a voice, and a cast of characters, I can’t stop thinking about. This is from “Cambodian Rocks Vol 1,” which is full of great recordings. Her voice could shatter glass, and it’s so skillfully wielded — I’d love to hear her in a face-off with Frankie Valli.
- There’s a moment from Paige’s phone archives of a little George and Isabelle aching to ride rides at the Millstadt homecoming.
9. Les Poppys - “Isabelle je t’aime”
These young boys singing collectively about their — collective? 17 individual? — love(s) for Isabelle is even more innocent in video format:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o618mlIaR7E
- more C.K. Mann - “Mber Papa”
10. The Jam - “In the City”
This song makes me miss the city so much! It sounds like everything we really can’t get up to right now. I feel like this song helps me feel like I’m walking fast under streetlights.
11. Bruno Leys - “Maintenant je suis un voyou”
This 7” from Born Bad is so incredible! Bruno Leys worked on just a few songs with a band that included a guy named Emmanuel Pairault who plays parts on an instrument called the ondes Martenot, a super early, very eclectic and ungainly electronic instrument. The fact that he could actually compose music of any kind on it was considered remarkable. The fact that he was able to write such incredibly expressive parts to thoroughly filigree the choruses is what amazes me.
This band recorded four songs, then Bruno Leys left for his military service, and when he came back it was all completely over — the catalog was sold, everyone was scattered. Four songs.
12. Sleepy Kitty - “Nothing = You”
I’m pretty sure this song was essentially our response to our own growing fascination with French pop. To me it sounds more French than American in texture. We played this song with the Incurables once at The Pageant in STL and it was especially glorious. I think of that moment — Kevin Bachmann harmonizing flawlessly with Paige, four different guitars ringing through the chords — every time I hear this track.
13. Plastic Bertrand - “Pogo Pogo”
I don’t know why or when “Ça Plane Pour Moi” became the one French pop song that Americans are likely to know, but it’s a total banger so I have no complaints. It turns out that pretty much all of his songs sound very similar — one-note melodies in the verse, cool vocalese hooks in the chorus, and super-driving guitar parts throughout. Turns out that’s a formula we totally dig!
14. Os K-rrascos & Vanessinha Do Picatchu - “Bochecha Ardendo”
For whatever reason, a variety of Brazilian music seemed to be the very hottest stuff to be found in Chicago’s art-school party nights, and I remember losing my mind to some heavy Brazilian rhythms that just kept folding over and over on themselves while staying so impossibly funky that the whole night just turned into a deep-green-and-dark orange smear of a late-night winter warehouse dancing and sweating and then way, way later, walking home steaming along a cold sidewalk on a tree-lined street.
- Eric Dolphy - “Hat and Beard”
15. Von Südenfed - “The Rhinohead”
I feel like no one in my zone talks enough about how awesome Von Südenfed is. I mean, we only know this one album, but it’s so fascinating — a band where Mark E. Smith is contributing but not in control, and on purpose. He shows off his pop chops and gets to be a whole different character in this one place, while the Mouse on Mars guys get to play new characters themselves. It feels like it’s related to “Extricate” in how it’s constructed, but the music doesn’t sound like something any version of the Fall has made.
16. Fischer-Spooner - “The 15th”
A friend of Wire is a friend of ours.
p.s. Paige here, they went to SAIC (before I arrived) but they were super famous to all of us in the dorms.
17. T.P. Orchestre - “Pourquoi Pas?”
The depths of this band just continue to amaze us. We’re waiting on some T.P.O.C. vinyl right now, featuring mostly songs we’ve never heard, and the everlovin’ post office is misdelivering it BACK to France even as I write this. It’s driving us totally nuts.
18. Nina Simone - “Mississippi Goddam”
The hardness of her voice, the hardness of her experience, the hardness of her words.
19. Fanny - “Blind Alley”
I don’t know who first put this in front of my eyes, but it was a few years ago. The video is so basic — they’re performing in front of a video-psych effect — but the performers themselves are just so absorbing. And the production is so heavy, it feels legendary.
20. Manmadha Leela soundtrack - “Kushalamena”
I think we first saw a colorful glimpse of this song before we heard it. Paige automatically starts dancing a little dance as soon as “Kushalamena” comes on.
This I think came from the “Now Playing” group I’m in on FB: a guy was holding out a picture of the cover of this album and said he’d bought 40 more like it and he LOVED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. He just wanted to see if anyone knew anything more about them. I did my best to hear the album he was showing. I think this is it. I think he’s right to be super jazzed about it, we just want to hang out with him and listen to all those records.
21. Francis Bebey - “Je vous aime zaime zaime”
Paige was working on her pronunciation and when to use the ellision — the z sound for the s letter, depending on what comes next — and he said something about, “Unless you’re Francis Bebey and you’re singing ‘Je vous aime zaime zaime.” And she said, “Francis Bebey? I know Francis Bebey!” and he said, “No, you’re thinking of another Francis.” But we all know the truth. This was our introduction to the song though.
- Jack Teagarden - “I Guess I’ll Have to Change My Plan”
Paige was looking for the Fred Astaire & Jack Buchanan version from “The Bandwagon,” but found this great instrumental trombone-forward version instead.
22. Pono AM - "Good Vibes"
This is one of those things you see every once in a great while when you’re playing clubs in a music scene — a band hits a natural home run. They just have an undeniably appealing crowdpleaser of a song that they wrote, and everyone flips out when they hear it. We salute Pono AM for writing this perfect song. They enrich the STL music world. My only advice to them was to never get tired of it or take it for granted.
Paige: We took their band photos at our space on Cherokee Street, for an RFT article. I was impressed because they arrived with matching shirts that still had the tags on them, and it was really exciting to see a new band on the scene who was really good and also putting in the effort to be graphically interesting. We believe that stuff counts. All of their shows, if you got there early, you’d see all of the band members blowing up as many balloons as they could, so there would be balloons bouncing around their set for the whole show, and it made it even better.
23. Sir Victor Uwaifo And His Titibitis - "Iranm Iran"
Analog Africa has a new album! It’s called “Edo International,” and it shows off a whole other side of Beninese music that isn’t T.P. Orchestre. I think of T.P. Orchestre as just a giant force in Beninese music, but then this comp comes out showing so many other roots of Benin City’s highlife-funk scene. Victor Uwaifo was a Nigerian guitarist who returned to his hometown in Benin City and built Joromi Studio. The sound he put together at that place, via his own bands and others’, came to be called Edo Funk.
24. Laughing Man - "Brilliant Colors"
This is a tape of one of the artists of one of the group houses that we always would stay at in DC. Benjamin Schurr runs a tape label and it was always such a treat getting the new batch of Blight. releases for the van soundsystem when we’d roll through town, or one of his bands would tour through St. Louis. They were always interesting stuff and a wide range of sounds and styles.
We first met Brandon Moses when he was on tour with Paperhaus in St. Louis. I think it was his birthday, too. He didn’t tour a ton with them. Laughing Man was our first time hearing him front songs. We always enjoyed staying with Erik and Benjamin and Brandon and enjoyed sharing that green power juice that Brandon gave us — really powered us up for the next drive.
- Bembeya Jazz - “Petit Sokou”
I have felt love for this song for awhile, but Josh Weinstein recently sent a video of the band actually performing this song and WOW, it is hypnotizing. The outfits, the instruments, and the expressiveness of the guitar playing are all so vivid in black and white: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpZVF_kKUJ4
25. Maxime le Forestier - “San Francisco”
Our thanks to Paige’s French instructor for showing us this song. Paige’s version is well worth hearing too, I must say: https://www.instagram.com/p/CKhJfqDDe2q/
p.s. Paige again, if you want to see the dragon birthday card that Evan made, here it is!

Jewelers’ Building and NBC Tower, Chicago
35 East Wacker, also known as the Jewelers' Building, is a 40-story 159.4 m (523 ft) historic building in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois, United States, located at the intersection of Wabash Avenue and E. Wacker Dr., facing the Chicago River. It was built from 1925 to 1927, and was co-designed by Joachim G. Giaver and Frederick P. Dinkelberg. It was once considered to be the tallest building in the world outside New York City. Formerly the Pure Oil Building and North American Life Insurance Building, 35 East Wacker was listed in 1978 as a contributing property to the Michigan–Wacker Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, and was designated a Chicago Landmark on February 9, 1994.
For its first 14 years, the building had a car lift that served the first 23 floors and facilitated safe transfers for jewelry merchants. Currently, the French-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago is a tenant, and the showroom of architect Helmut Jahn was atop the building inside the dome, which was also once a restaurant called the Stratosphere Club, often erroneously said to be run by Al Capone. (In reality, the Stratosphere Club opened in 1937, long after Capone was imprisoned and too late for the building to have been an illegal speakeasy). The building is currently being renovated, by Goettsch Partners, and the facade is being maintained, but the interiors converted into a more modern configuration. Both the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the City of Chicago have recognized the renovation project with awards.

The NBC Tower is an office tower on the Near North Side of Chicago, Illinois located at 454 North Columbus Drive (455 North Cityfront Plaza is also used as a vanity address for the building) in downtown Chicago's Magnificent Mile area. Completed in 1989, the 37-story building reaches a height of 627 feet (191 m). NBC's Chicago offices, studios, and owned-and-operated station WMAQ-TV are located here as of 1989 and on October 1, 1989, WMAQ-TV broadcast their first newscast at 10:00 that evening at their new home, NBC Tower with the then-weeknight news team of Ron Magers, Carol Marin, John Coleman, and Mark Giangreco. Later, Telemundo O&O WSNS-TV since their 2002 purchase by NBC. Formerly its former radio sister WMAQ/WSCR was located here. The studios of NBC's former Chicago FM property, WKQX and its sister station WLUP are located in the NBC Tower.
The design, by Adrian D. Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is considered one of the finest reproductions of the Art Deco style. It was inspired by 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, which is NBC's global headquarters. The tower is further enhanced by the use of limestone piers and recessed tinted glass with granite spandrels. The building takes additional cues from the nearby landmark Tribune Tower with the use of flying buttresses. A 130 ft (40 m) broadcast tower and spire tops the skyscraper. WMAQ and WSNS have STL and satellite facilities on the roof; the STLs link to WMAQ and WSNS's transmitter facilities atop the Willis Tower. WMAQ radio/WSCR studios and STL were located in the building until 2006 when they relocated to Two Prudential Plaza.
Located in the Cityfront Plaza area, the building contains 850,000 sq ft (79,000 m2) of space and three floors of underground parking with 261 spaces. Connected to the main tower is a four-story radio and television broadcasting facility where popular shows such as Judge Mathis and WSNS's newscasts and WMAQ's newscasts are currently taped, and was the former recording facility for The Jerry Springer Show and The Steve Wilkos Show before their tax credit-influenced move to Stamford, Connecticut in 2009. It was also home to the 1990s syndicated improv/sketch show Kwik Witz, The Jenny Jones Show until its cancellation in 2003, and Steve Harvey until their move to Los Angeles in 2017.

Luke and Tsion - Owner-operator and Assistant Bar Manager, Electric Mayhem Tattoo and Taco Circus
I asked them and a few others to tell me a little from their point of view on Covid19 and how they are dealing with things, this is what they had to say...
Did Covid19 affect your career? “Yes”
Is this Temporary? “yes”
Are you Looking for work or just riding this out? What are you doing in the downtime? “We are riding it out at home, we had saved some money for a lot of trips this year so..... Painting and photography as creative outlets. Working on the yard. Going for drives to take a hike, getting upset at how many people are doing the exact same thing, staying in the car and driving right back home without ever actually getting out. We do that one a lot. Reading and watching movies.”
Before all of this, What was your outlook, expectations, and feelings about the year at the beginning of 2020? “Sober, saving money, working out 5-6 days a week, therapy, waking up early, selling our house...”
When / where did you hear about the coronavirus AND were you worried? “Friends parents live and work in China, they were sending videos of what it was really like there. Early February I think… Definitely worried. Scientists had been predicting a flu-like pandemic for quite a long time..”
How did you feel about COVID-19 as it related to you and your wellbeing on March 1st? “We were still working but had discussed stopping by this point. I had urged Tsion to stop working sooner than later, we self quarantined before the stay at home orders we even in effect."
How did you feel about COVID-19 as it related to you and your wellbeing when the city officially shut down? “We had already been in our home for a week or two at this point so it was pretty much more of the same. Scared, but hopeful that our country could handle things better than Italy had at this point."
What are your Personal hopes/goals for when this is over? “It’s been amazing watching the STL community adapt and support one another. Our hope is that it continues as this progresses. So many people had 2020 as “their year”. Things were happening. Dreams were coming true. Hopefully, that can still happen. Especially our own!”
What do you think the new normal for you will be when this is all over? “I never liked crowds much anyway. I’m pretty sure my “new” normal will look much like my old normal. Maybe less international travel..."
What do you think will be the new normal for STL after this is over? “I think we never completely “go back” to what we knew as normal. I imagine we will see a lot of innovation and adaptation to current businesses and services. Restaurants that can’t make enough money selling normal menu items might start doing more things like packaged “prep in your home” meals. Apotheosis became a comic book and beer delivery service. The business that can’t adapt won’t survive most likely, but I have confidence that we as a city have the ability to come back from this. Probably a little scarred for it, but this town has always taken it’s hits and keeps on going.”

Bucciarati and Trish ascend in the tower's elevator, but when they arrive at the top, Bucciarati discovers that Trish has disappeared and that he is only holding her severed hand. Bucciarati has a flashback to his youth when he first joined Passione and realizes that the boss intends to kill his daughter to protect his own identity. Bucciarati follows the boss and manages to attach Giorno's ladybug tracker to him before he disappears. Bucciarati attacks the boss and reconnects Trish's hand, but the boss uses his Stand King Crimson[x] to erase time and effortlessly avoid Bucciarati's attacks. Having appeared behind Bucciarati, King Crimson pushes his fist all the way through Bucciarati's chest in an attempt to kill him.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Functional Recovery Training Arc EP#22 - Master of the Mansion: Tanjiro comes face-to-face with the nine most powerful Demon Slayers: Giyu (the Water Pillar), Shinobu (the Insect Pillar), Kyojuro Rengoku (the Flame Pillar), Tengen Uzui (the Sound Pillar), Mitsuri Kanroji (the Love Pillar), Muichiro Tokito (the Mist Pillar), Gyomei Himejima (the Stone Pillar), Obanai Iguro (the Snake Pillar), and Sanemi Shinazugawa (the Wind Pillar). They put Tanjiro on trial due to him having violated Demon Slayer Corps rules by traveling with a demon, even if she is his sister. Tanjiro states she won't eat humans and can fight with the Demon Slayers to protect humans. Sanemi comes outside with Nezuko in her box, calling him deluded and stabs through the box and into Nezuko's shoulder. Tanjiro charges him and Giyū calls out that the Master will soon be here and to stop, which startles Sanemi, giving Tanjiro an opening to headbutt him and knock him to the ground, impressing the Hashiras. The Master of the Demon Slayers arrives before Sanemi can strike him back and all the Hashiras kneel, Sanemi forcing Tanjiro's head down. The Master is a blind man with scars across the upper half of his face, accompanied by two white-haired girls. The Master states he has sanctioned the situation with Tanjiro and Nezuko and asks the Hashiras to accept it, but the majority refuse. The Master has one of the girls with him summarize a letter from Urokodaki Sakonji, the former Water Pillar, asking the Master to approve of Tanjiro's situation as Nezuko has neither lost her human emotions nor harmed a human. If Nezuko ever assaults a human, Urokodaki vows that he, Tanjiro, and Giyū will all commit seppuku (ritual suicide), with Tanjiro shocked at their faith. Rengoku replies that seppuku won't bring back the human Nezuko kills, objecting to the request. The Master agrees there is no guarantee Nezuko won't attack humans, but points out that there is no proof that she will attack humans. Even when starved, she has not harmed one in two years, on the basis of which the Master decides to risk it unless the Hashiras can come up with a more convincing argument than she may. He then adds that Tanjiro has met Kibutsuji, shocking them as none of the Hashira have ever seen the reclusive progenitor of the demons. They start demanding he tell them details about Kibutsuji until the Master silences them. Kibutusuji has sent pursuers after Tanjiro, perhaps only to silence him and Nezuko, but it's the first time he's revealed himself and the Master doesn't want to let him escape. Sanemi agrees to spare Tanjiro but refuses to allow Nezuko to live. He cuts open his arm and stabs Nezuko twice more through the box, intending to prove she can't be trusted. After tossing the box inside a house out of the sun, he opens it, telling Nezuko to attack him for the human blood she hungers for. An injured Nezuko emerges from the box and turns to him, salivating through her muzzle.
Food Wars: The Second Plate Stagiaire Arc EP#35 - The Stagiaire: The Stagiaire program requires students to take up residence and leave their mark on various restaurants. Soma is paired with Hisako, who has been feeling inferior since she lost the Autumn Elections, and they are sent to Mitamura Western Restaurant. They discover that the restaurant is struggling to keep up with the barrages of orders from commuting customers, but Soma manages to use his experience to take control and keep everyone organised. Meanwhile, Erina and Megumi are sent to a French restaurant, where Erina instantly takes command of the kitchen and Megumi finds her own way to make improvements. While Hisako becomes more accustomed to her role, Soma believes that the restaurant needs to change, so that it doesn't struggle again once the Stagiaire is over. With the staff unwilling to cut down their large menu, Soma suggests that they become a reservations-only restaurant. After passing the first stage of the Stagiare, Soma tells Hisako to stop feeling ashamed of her defeat, telling her that she should aim to stand beside Erina, instead of behind her.
Black Clover: Elf Tribe Reincarnation Arc EP#111 - The Eyes in the Mirror: Within the dream world Reve confronts the Bulls, explaining that she has full control of the dreams reality. Vanessa is relieved to find Rouge can still use her magic to keep them alive. Sally uses her extensive magical knowledge to combine the Bulls magic into new attacks as well as working out exactly how Reve's magic functions. The Bulls become drowsy and Reve reveals that anyone trapped in her dream world for long periods will eventually fall asleep forever. Sally realises that anything Reve imagines in the dream world will physically appear, even against her will. With this in mind Sally tricks Reve into imagining and accidentally creating exits leading back to the real world. Meanwhile within the Shadow Palace Yami and Jack become lost as they are manipulated by the elf Baval using Dice Magic to warp reality. Droit and Eclat try to kill Asta, but he is saved by Gordon, Grey and Henry. Despite activating his demon form Asta is paralysed by Eclat but is saved again when Henry transforms part of the base's rubble into a flying bull. As he is only alive because of the magic power he took from his friends Henry decides he will sacrifice all his remaining magic and even his life to keep Asta alive long enough to defeat Droit and Eclat.

STL to ATL today. Meetings til Friday. And I’m just an Administrative Assistant. It is kind of fun traveling because I get to eat in fancy restaurants and see new places. The beds and pillows are always sooo comfy. But I miss home already. Something always goes wrong when I’m away.

The ones that, for decades, have consistently given customers quality food and friendly service in a great environment. These four restaurants reflect our great city’s personality and history.

The three separate rooms, all with the same menu, offer something for everyone. A saloon with antique backbar for music, a fun game room with high top tables, and the café with Mardi Gras feel-good vibes. The complimentary shuttle to Cardinals and Blues games makes a visit to the city much more relaxing.
St. Charles: Lewis & Clarks American Restaurant (http://www.lewisandclarksrestaurant.com/Home) The historic location alone is enough reason to visit! It’s located on a picturesque downtown cobblestone street with a view of the Missouri River. The three-story brick building has fun historic touches to give homage to the famous explorers and their time in this area. Lewis & Clarks is a great gathering place and accommodates small dinner parties as well as large events.
North County: Hendel’s Restaurant (http://hendelsrestaurant.com/) Hendel’s tagline says it all: Food. Drink. History. The building was purchased by the Hendel family over 100 years ago. It’s evolved in to the restaurant it is today in Old Town Florissant. Indoor dining instantly improves with a grand piano in the room! And the outdoor patio is just what one would imagine, with trees, flowers, great lighting and privacy.

CloudKitchens will begin tenant move-in on June 1st, and restaurants will start accepting orders in June. ST. LOUIS, MO (STL.News) CloudKitchens is a ghost kitchen concept that allows restaurants to expand and focus on the quality of their food rather than maintenance, staffing, dealing with customers, dealing with delivery drivers, cleaning, etc. Ghost kitchens provide the facility services as part of the rent or license agreement, eliminating the need for the restaurants to hire a big staff. Additionally, they provide a system and process that helps get the food from the kitchen to the lockers for delivery drivers to receive and then deliver to the customer. Customers can pick up the food to save on delivery fees. The kitchen is responsible for cooking. That's it! There is no area for dining, but some ghost kitchens across the country have small areas for eating. Ghost kitchen is a new concept that has not yet been successfully proven. Many ghost kitchens targeted startup restaurants, which failed, and now they are targeting existing restaurants as a way to expand quickly and leverage the online ordering systems that provide delivery. Most restaurants now claim that 50% or more of their sales come from online ordering and delivery. So the concept makes sense on the surface, but time will tell. The known tenants for this location are: - STL Indian Kitchen - no additional information - Thai Kitchen - with four locations across the region, including St. Charles, O'Fallon, Wentzville, and Florissant. - 10 more, and we will continue to update this list. According to an employee of CloudKitchens, they have approximately 12 kitchens leased out of 25 available, and move-ins will begin June 1st. As far as we know, this is the only ghost kitchen concept with this model in the St. Louis region. They are located approximately 1/2 mile south of I-44 on Hampton Avenue. CloudKitchens is located at: 2360 Hampton Avenue St. Louis, Missouri 63139 Corp. phone: 888-419-5458 Read the full article
