Star Trek Prodigy Pre-Season 2 Rewatch
Lost and Found Part 1 and 2
I know there was a lot of crap about the opening episodes being too Star Wars-y, and I really don't know what they're complaining about. Is it just too jarring that we don't start on a starfleet ship? Because I can think of at least three other Trek shows that don't. And it's predecessor, Voyager, also starts with a group of non-starfleet officers running away from a larger enemy. What have you got against scrappy purple boi, internet critics!
I love seeing Dal here. Knowing how much he grows in one season. I also forgot just how dangerous Tars Lamora was. The surface is deadly. the deep mines are deadly. Even the main area Dal starts in, which seems well trafficked, he is nearly crushed in a random rock fall in the first escape attempt. It does a lot to emphasize just how high the stakes were!
As always I lost track of time the minute the ship's escape sequence started. There are so many details and so much beauty animated into every shot. The sequence makes the ship feel like a tangible real thing, a character in and of itself.
Some of my favorites:

Then this shot of the shields protecting the Dal from Drednok makes me gasp every time!

And, even after so many rewatchs too, hearing Hologram Janeway speak for the first time right before she appears at the end still makes me squeal. It was the first new time I'd heard Janeway's voice in like 20 years and it continues to be as exciting as the first time!

prodigy season 2 starts by hammering in the same problem season 1 had, here are all these hard work students, all the team are working very hard and qualified and contributing to their classes, and then Dal isn't. The over confident, underqualified boytagonist who always gets ahead no matter what, the generic manofaction cartoon hero. They never overcame this in s1, never justified why he, not Gwen or any other character was the lead except, this is the character shows use for tween boy demographics, and season 2 is doubling down on it and going harder than season 1 on making him as useless, annoying and undeserving than ever all while he sidelines the characters who live up to the shows ideals.

New review and analysis of Prodigy season 2 episodes 1-5. We talk a lot about what the story is trying to achieve this season, what forces in the narrative are most powerful, and what the story is trying to mean. I haven't watched past this part yet but I'm bracing for heartbreak. Great setup to the season so far.

Star Trek: Prodigy - Season 1: Episodes 11-20 makes Media Play News' top 20 of all Blu-ray sales! Go Prodigy!
The suggestion has also been made on Reddit that we can keep the numbers surging by each buying a second copy of both DVDs, both Blu-ray's, and the individual books, and donate them to your local library. (Only if you can afford it, of course!)
Then everyone in your community can have free access to the series, see how amazing it is, and the demand for S2 can grow!
Heard the news from u/WillieStampler on Reddit, just thought I'd repost here.

I started and finished Prodigy season one today.
I don't want to get ahead of myself before some serious contemplation, but that may be the best Star Trek since DS9 went off the air.

i don't have the words to articulate it at this moment but there's something about the way that people have specific expectations for "authenticity" and will dismiss anything that falls outside them as a mangled, anglicised version of the thing when actually that is the older and more traditional form of something, it just doesn't match their expectations. obviously in my personal experiences i'm mostly talking about medieval literature here especially medieval irish literature
sometimes this is as simple as spelling – i've had people argue that the name "finn" is anglicised and it should always be "fionn" to be Really Irish, but "finn" is an older spelling, glide vowels are later, if you wanna go real far back it'll be "find" (nd in place of nn is an older spelling pattern). or they'll hear someone say "ogam" and assume they're mispronouncing "ogham" due to lack of knowledge of irish and not consider the fact that medievalists tend to use the older form of the word. or they'll Well Actually you about "correct" terminology which wasn't standardised (and/or invented) until the 20th century
a lot of this is defensive and the result of seeing a lot of people ACTUALLY get this stuff wrong and have no respect for the language. in that regard i understand it, although it becomes very tedious after a while, particularly when people sanctimoniously declare something "inauthentic", "fake", or "anglicised" without doing enough research to realise it's not trying to be modern irish and is in fact correct for older forms of the language
more often however this search for the projected "authenticity" is ideological and has much larger flaws and more problematic implications. "this can't be the real story because it's christian" well... that's the oldest version of the story that exists and it postdates christianity in ireland by about nine hundred years, so... maybe question why you're assuming the only "real" version of irish stories can't be a christian one? this is especially true when it comes to fíanaigecht material tbh, but in general there seems to a widespread misapprehension about ireland's historical relationship with christianity (i have seen people arguing that christianity in ireland is the result of english colonialism which took their "true" faith from them... bro. they were christian before the "english" existed. half the conversion efforts went the other way. please read some early medieval history thank you)
however i also saw someone saying this about arthurian literature lately which REALLY baffled me. "we'll never have the Real arthurian stories only the christianised versions" and it was in the context of chivalric romance. buddy you are mourning something that does not exist. this "authentic" story you're looking for isn't there. that twelfth century story you're dismissing as a christian bastardisation is as "real" a part of this tradition as you're going to get

Harry having never learned how to play because the Dursleys refused to buy him toys, Dudley refused to let him play with his, and other kids generally avoided him.
When he gets adopted by Snape, pre-Hogwarts, Snape finds out about Harry never being allowed toys while they’re out shopping and he proceeds to buy him a little dear plush.
Harry is absolutely enamored by the plush, but has absolutely no clue what he’s supposed to do with it at all. So after about 30 minutes of him just appreciatively staring at the stuffed animal, Severus is completely perplexed and asks him what’s wrong.
Harry tries explaining to the best of his ability that he doesn’t know what to do, but truly does love the gift, leading to him asking Snape, “how do I play?”.
Severus is immediately reminded of his own childhood, pre-Lily, where he had no one to play with. He is absolutely distraught that Harry has had a similar childhood experience and needs to fix that now, like right now. He sits down on the floor, crisscross applesauce style, and attempts to teach Harry how to play despite having not done so in over a decade.
“First step, children tend to choose a name for their new toy. What would you think is a good name for our… little friend here?” Severus picks up the plush deer awkwardly.
Harry’s eyes crinkle in delight at the scene.
“Why do kids name them?” Harry tilts his head, staring wide eyed at the plush, “I don’t want to pick the wrong name.”
“Oh? Well, I suppose it makes you feel more attached to the toy, and it helps when it comes to imaginative play to specify which one you are referring to,” the tall man’s brows furrow for a second, “As for choosing the wrong name, there is no ‘wrong’ answer little prince. This is a gift. This is yours.”
Harry blinks, “Mine?”
“That’s right, now name please, it doesn’t need to be perfect, you can always change it later child.”
Looking around the room for inspiration, Harry mumbled out a name, “… Mr. Fawn?”
“Perfect, Mr. Fawn, it is. Now, it’ll be a little difficult to demonstrate pretend play with only one character, but I think I can manage a small display.”
Severus proceeds to give the cutest lil introduction for Mr. Fawn, going so far as to make a voice to keep Harry as engaged as possible. Harry is absolutely having the time of his life giggling, gasping, asking questions and yelling out responses.
They end up doing this until bedtime. Severus gives back Mr. Fawn to Harry so he can sleep with him, watching as they go through their nighttime routine that Harry absolutely refuses to let the deer go. As soon as Severus shuts the lights out in Harry’s room, he hears Harry whisper, “night Sev’rus, night night Mr. Fawn.”
