Would you recommend the SSSS comic? I know little of it beside the very beautiful artstyle and premise

to answer the question of if i would recommend SSSS as a comic: yes, yes i would.

a description for those who don't know: Stand Still Stay Silent is a post-apocalyptic horror + adventure webcomic set in the nordics (norway, sweden, denmark, finland, iceland) that have been isolated from the rest of the world and gone back to their old gods. the the world outside of safe zones is full of trolls and beasts - humans and mammals that got infected by a horrible virus and turned into monsters. the story follows a ragtag crew that ventures into the old world (derelict denmark) on an expedition to collect books.

the comic updated every workday until it concluded in 2022, and consists of two Adventures. the creator had plans for many adventures with these characters in this world, but ended it after two when she wanted to take a new direction with her life.

what i love about it:

- the art is GORGEOUS. it's been a huge source of inspiration for me. open any page and it's a masterpiece, and you will ask yourself "how the FUCK did she update this FIVE DAYS A WEEK"

- the characters are wonderful and endearing. i just, i love them so much. i am so thankful lalli hotakainen exists he is one of my #1 blorbos forever

- the world is so cool. the blend of chunky sci-fi and norse mythology fantasy magic slaps. it goes so hard. i fell so hard for this comic when i got to the big ferry ship with a viking style dragon head prow added to it. it's everything

- it really really gets nordic cultures. it's difficult to explain all the dynamics and nuances but it just gets it. it brings me as a scandinavian a lot of joy to read a story that speaks to my heart this way. the attitudes, the language barriers, the cultural differences... it was so refreshing to me in a media landscape dominated by american stories. when the pandemic hit, i decided to reread the comic because i found such an odd comfort in seeing how it depicted the scandinavian countries reacting to, well, a pandemic.

- there's kittycats

what i don't like about it:

- the most glaring and obvious flaw is that everyone in the comic is white. there's not a single character of color anywhere, not even i background shots or the prologue. there's no mention of the saami people (the indigenous people of northern europe), either. i believe this was done in ignorance more than malicious intent, but the implications are Extremely Bad and it's been bothering me (AND MANY OTHERS) since day 1. that is the number one caveat i will give to anyone wanting to check this comic out. i've been in the discourse trenches and i am not going to excuse this. it's just bad!

- you can tell in the middle of adventure 2 that the creator has kind of lost interest in the work, around the time when she found jesus i guess. like, very few people can keep up work on the same creative project for years and years and years and i think it's fine that she wanted to drop it, but it's a bit sad to see the comic dragged to its end like a limp corpse, and feeling like the creator no longer really cares about the characters.

- minna sundberg has said and done some questionable things, presumably gotten somewhat radicalised over time, and has also converted to hardcore christianity which is what her new works are about. there's nothing about this in SSSS - there is a moment of christianity represented in the story in a sort of mythological sense, just like the other religions, but this was written before minna's conversion. her new works... are a Choice. i have much to say about them, and i have, and im not gonna rehash it now.

SO YEAH hopefully this will help you take an Informed Choice! i got into this comic in 2015 and was deep in the fandom and it's for better or for worse part of my soul foundation now.

i also recommend A Redtail's Dream, minna's "practice comic" before SSSS, based on finnish mythology and the kalevala.

it's such a good headcanon, its canon to me.

The word you were probably looking for is hissing? The word sounds a bit aggressive but the noise is just called hissing. It makes sense that Kai and Skylor would do that more when they're stressed or nervous.

Hissing functions similarly to a dog growl, in that it's a warning. While they can control it if they try, it's harder to control in high-stress scenarios or when they're nervous and have to split their focus. Especially when it comes to sibilants when they're talking.

That does add a fun layer of context to how Pythor talks, though I imagine the hissing of sibilants in his regular dialogue is more akin to an Anacondrai accent (though tragically that implies all Anacondrai speak like the British) than him constantly trying to threaten whoever he's talking to.

Lloyd probably didn't know a lot about snakes as a kid, despite his focus on the Serpentine tombs, or else he probably would have realized from Pythor's posturing, hissing, and all the bones left in the Anacondrai tomb, that this guy ate all the other ones and was not beyond eating him too.

Now that I think about it, it would make sense that Anacondrai's communication is heavy on hissing; it doesn't require opening the mouth. It can also vibrate though an entire body, meaning that Anacondrai can, essentially, hear each other speak underwater. Since invisibility is something they can also do, it'd be reasonable to think that they aren't as heavy on specifics in body language as real life snakes or (presumably) Serpentine would be in communication.

While we never see the Serpentine have a specific spoken language (that I can remember), I doubt that they wouldn't have some form of that. Maybe Ninjargon just became super common among those like King Mamba's populous because it allowed for easier communication and therefore potential trade or negotation with humans.

(IRL snakes also communicate using pheromones but i'm not delving into that)

And hello everyone! I have a couple of sketches to showcase today ;) A lot of my CO related projects are for fandom events, so I've been working on those (both COBB + COAR). Just finished Gridman Universe, and yeah that was really good. One of my worries was that it would just be SSSS Gridman the Movie feat the Dynazenon team, and yeah it some parts it was (noticeable lack of the Kaiju Eugenisis for instance), but it didn't ruin the movie. We still got some good interactions with everyone. And the final fight. Do I even need to mention how off the wall awesome it was? If this really is the end of the Gridman Universe project, and we'll never get another show from this whole thing, I don't think I would be to upset. This was an amazing finale.

when 1863!hsy was writing TWSA, her dreams got sent back to child hsy since, you know. they were sharing a body. so hsy wrote SSSS-grade regressor, a story that she absolutely INSISTS is not plagiarised, because as far as she knew, it wasn’t. the stories came from her dreams.

if lee hakhyun took the world of ORV from his dreams, too, does the fact that the dreams came from somewhere else make it any less his own work? the same way that just because 51 and 49 were split, did that make 49 not ‘really’ kim dokja? it’s still his story, in the end, but in both instances the person who was deemed the ‘liar’ was made to believe that he did not have the right to believe it was part of his identity. even though it was. even though he had more right to it than anyone else.

when it comes to a person’s past, it’s near impossible to completely deny it happened; it leaves a mark of its own, even if you change your name or your appearance. it’s still a life you lived, and so its claws will always reach out for you again. but you can re-define it. you can’t cut out the pages, but you can always make the story your own again.

in the future, were lee hakhyun’s past life ever to come to light, he might find himself trapped in a state of self-doubt again; ‘I’m not even really Lee Hakhyun, was I ever really who I thought I was?’ but he was, and he is; just as he is a fragment of kim dokja (same as many other readers, just a bigger fragment than anticipated), he is also an author of orv (who… actually, when you remember the theory of kim dokja himself having added in the bits that none of kimcom could have known, this has horrifying implications). he wrote stories about a wish still being your story, he made drafts that didn’t make it into han sooyoung’s ‘final cut’ but still managed to come fuck him over anyway. a wish becomes a self-exploration becomes discovery of the self. everything that came before remains a part of your story, but you can still write something new and choose what it means for yourself.

i am projecting my own gender issues, yeah :D talking as a person that wrote a non-binary character to find out if that was really what i wanted or not,,, writing is good for that. it helps you explore situations in a safe space that doesn’t physically harm you or others

even if he wasn't the original author he is still an author. and even if not of the main story, this side story is definitely his. multiple times it's mentioned that the story has left han sooyoung's hands at this point, and she even mentions that she doesn't like the story continuing with developments she's no longer aware of

for his identity issues, he really just needs someone to affirm to him that he's himself. when kim dokja told him 'you're lee hakhyun' it really affected him (in a good way), i'm sure his companions will help him out if anything goes wrong (he just needs to. actually tell them...) maybe being in orv will actually help him find a sense of self. even before he transmigrated, it seemed like after orv, he didn't really have any idea of where to go

also, about lhh's orv. him having stuff in the manuscript that was cut out later, that means that not everything that was uploaded to the cloud was put into orv. han sooyoung also mentioned that orv failed on some worldlines, so i'm thinking that orv might have been written differently depending on the author. the major story would still be there, but small details might have been omitted/changed.. maybe even the orv we read is different from the one that lhh wrote. if this is true, the orv that lhh wrote would be successful in part because of his writing (and ji eunyu's editing!) ..that might also be an explanation for the original/web novel changes, different versions of the story due to authors writing orv a different way with the information they were given from the cloud.

and since i don't feel making a separate post, i have an idea on what might appear in the side story lee hakhyun mentioned a collaboration with his previous works in the prologue chapter.. there's a chance that might come true in the side story. other author's stories can show up in orv (peaceland), so why not lee hakhyun's?

i have to get this out of my system.

i know it’s been quite some time since ssss ended, and even longer since minna’s announcement about ending it.

and yet i cannot get it to my understanding that something so beautiful would come to an end like that. the ending is so… bleh. ssss was something very special and important to me and many others. discovering it felt like a blessing of sorts, as it had everything i could ever ask for in a series. the world building, the concept, the characters, scandinavian and finnish mythology, different cultures, multilingual characters, adventure, action, horror, and the cozyness of the entire storyline.

this comic grew onto me so completely i feel like i can’t function anymore. it hurts even more now that i have read minna’s new comic, a meandering line. according to the comic she had plans to continue ssss for the next decade or so, or as long as she could stretch the storyline. she seemed to have been enthusiastic about it even when she already had converted.

but instead she’s now making a comic about christianity. of course these are her comics, always were, and what she decides to do with them is entirely up to her. but abandoning the project entirely just because your faith doesn’t align with that of the characters and the message of the comic? it’s heartbreaking and pathetic.

it feels like christianity has yet again taken something away from me. as christians (and christianity to some degree) already irk and terrify me, now they’ve done this; in the form of minna now being a christian. for me ssss is The Comfort Comic (or any form of media). the importance this comic held and still holds to me can’t honestly be exaggerated. i simply love it. i do. the author converted to christianity and BAM it’s gone. just like that. and it’s left me feeling empty.

what breaks my heart even more is how minna now speaks of it. on her website, upon introducing her comics, she seems to not hold any emotions toward ssss. i could of course be wrong, but it’s almost like she regrets her older comics.

maybe i’m being dramatic about someone else’s project but as a fan and as someone to whom this comic was sometimes the only reason to get out of bed i overall just feel disappointed. i wish things hadn’t gone like this.

Buck and Eddie were surprised when they got home to find all the lights on. Eddie cautiously opened the door, Buck close behind him, and tiptoed into the lounge, only to be met by a particularly haggard-looking May with Aidan in her lap and Christopher watching a show from the couch. “Uhhh, hi, didn’t expect you both to still be awake” Eddie said as he bent over to kiss Christopher’s head, sending May a look of confusion. “Christopher here decided he was old enough to stay up until 10 o’clock and Buck Jr. refused to go down without a fight” May replied flatly, holding Aidan out to Buck who took him gladly. “Christopher, you said you were going to be good for May” Eddie admonished. Christopher had the grace to look sheepish. “I wanted you to see Aidan’s new trick” Christopher explained, sending Buck and Eddie an embarrassed grin. “Ssssssssss” Aidan said happily from Buck’s arms, grinning proudly around the room. “New trick?” Buck looked between May and Christopher questioningly. “What new trick?” Aidan continued to “ssssss” as May began to explain. “He’s learned a new word” she said, looking at the boy with a tired fondness. “Christopher was particularly excited. “A new word, huh?” Buck asked, excited. “Does this explain why he sounds like he’s sprung a leak?” Eddie asked in amusement, adding a quick “Ssss” as May looked at him in confusion. “Oh. Yes. That. Christopher, why don’t you show them?” Christopher puffed himself up proudly and addressed his little brother. “Aidan, what’s my name?” he asked, pointing at himself. “Ssssssss” Aidan replied, and Christopher giggled. “Close! What’s my name, Aid?” Buck and Eddie watched closely as Aidan looked Christopher up and down, pointed a chubby finger in his direction and exclaimed “Tiss!”. “Did you hear that Dad, Buck?” Christopher asked excitedly. They sure did. “That’s so good, baby, that’s Chris!” Buck praised as he pressed quick kisses over Aidan’s cheeks. “Tiss” Aidan agreed happily, looking mighty pleased with himself. Christopher had swelled with pride and was beaming at Eddie. “He knows my name, Dad” he said quietly, voice shaking with excitement. “He sure does, bud, you’re his Tiss” Eddie chuckled, ruffling his son’s hair. May watched from the doorway, a small smile on her face. She let the small family have their moment before quietly announcing her departure, waving away Eddie’s offer of payment. “Honestly, it’s not a problem. I’ll watch them any time” she said with a smile. “Night guys!” “Goodnight, May!” the boys chorused as they waved her out the door.

Go grocery shopping with

Mikkel! I wanted to wait and not immediately put him here, but tbh I feel like I'd enjoy grocery shopping with him the most somehow. Plus I'd be pretty helpful (I hope) and not be a nuisance. If we're immersive and he's speaking Danish as he would irl, then I'd get to hear him in his native tongue and hopefully decipher what he says LOL. Maybe he'll let me hug him and he'll hug me back because imagine getting hugged by Mikkel (i'm imagining it).

2. Have lunch with

Barbie! I can tell her how obsessed I am with her work in Princess and the Pauper and that she should convince Mattel to do more fairy tale adaptations (especially the abandoned Sleeping Beauty project) in the classic animated Barbie style.

3. Have coffee with

Nepeta because we'd both get tea and probably have something (pastry, sandwich) with it as well, and she'd be nice to talk to.

4. Go thrift shopping with

Nana because she'd definitely be experienced in such places, and she'd be so much fun to do that kind of shopping with! I don't normally like to linger too much when shopping for clothes, but I think she'd make it more bearable. Plus it's what she deserves!!!!

5. Explore a museum/art gallery/aquarium with

Yeong-gi/Nol(an)! He'd be fun to explore these places with, and he needs a break from life (me too scoob). And maybe Dieter (my blorbo!!!) will tag along too, and I can hug Dieter and we can all have fun. (I guess Soushi can come too, but I'm not super attached to him lol)

6. Go the library/bookstore with

Ashlyn because it's the most likely to be a nice, quiet environment for her to be in, and we can take as long as we each like just wandering around whether we end up buying/borrowing something or not.

7. Have as a plus-one at a wedding

Aiden. I'd have someone I could talk to (assuming I don't know the people there well, he'd still be fun to have even if I did know them), and he'd definitely be entertaining to have around at a wedding.

== 𝑺𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝑺𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝑫𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝑵𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍: 𝑺𝑺𝑺𝑺 𝑫𝒚𝒏𝒂𝒛𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒏 == At last, we have reached the end of the Gridman Universe as of this moment in time. And after what was an underwhelming return with SSSS Gridman, I had held cautiously to Dynazenon originally before it had aired. I had loved Dynazenon on its first watch, and maybe it was my headspace at the time that gave it such an affectionate love from me. It’s been a year since I last seen Dynazenon, and I feel that my feelings have blossomed more.  Dynazenon is definitely the best of the current Gridman Universe projects between TRIGGER and Tsuburaya Productions by far. A lot of my issues with the previous entry are fixed, and Hasegawa has really shown that he now has his element back.  Dynazenon’s story is back peddled on actions, and what that our characters do that can drastically change what they and the people they have around them do. Kaiju may have changed the daily activity of the characters, but ultimately it was Yomogi, Minami, Gauma, Chise, and Koyomi who had changed each other and the Eugenicists and the plethora of reoccurring side cast. They may have been scarred in some way by their experiences, but their bonds are what guaranteed a future for their world and the love they all share for one another. The people we meet and grow to hold close are who we cherish and who we have changed, we may not know the extent but when we see it in action that’s when we know that what we did for them will ensure that they will do whatever it takes to show they care as much as we would for them. Dynazenon may be the true Gridman successor, as it wholly understood why the original show’s cast had such a strong impact on us viewers. They have the energy, the inner turmoil, and the compassion that made Naoto, Yuka, and Ippei so memorable. They are what bring the show’s emotional core into your own heart, and what makes the uplifting moments so strong and exhilarating.
