Would you guys consider flipping the layout to the right side instead of the left (as well as making it collapsible)? I think part of the irritation of users comes from the fact that it looks almost identical to Twitter rather than being it’s own thing. Plus, we’re used to the drop downs appearing on the right. Recommended blogs and featured posts would have to be moved somewhere else, not sure where though. Just throwing a thought I had stewing in my brain.

Also, have you guys considered an opt out button to see what % of users opt out of the new design? Even if it’s temporary/for testing purposes, it could be interesting to test what % of old vs new users prefer the old UI!

making it collapsible is already coming, please read the announcement post. flipping it to the right side is not an option, sorry. i think we tried that in an early version and it didn't work well; there are other submenus already on the right side on a lot of pages, and reorganizing things even more would be difficult. just taking the main nav from the top right to the left sidebar was enough for now.

we are not going to make an "opt out". judging by the number of people i'm seeing comment on the new layout and talk about user scripts to revert to the old layout, i'd be surprised if more than 1% to 5% of people using desktop web regularly would actually opt out. this is exactly why we don't try to block user scripts or browser extensions like XKit -- they're for the people who want that level of control.

i don't think folks can really understand just how many people use tumblr and how this layout is actually significantly better for the vast majority of us. that's not to say hating it and wanting it to go back to the way it was is invalid -- of course that's valid -- but we're trying to do the most effective work we can for the most people, given our constraints. sometimes we make mistakes, but this time i feel very confident saying this change wasn't a mistake.

i hope in six months or a year from now people are making memes about the old layout like they do about all kinds of changes that are difficult in the short term but made sense over time.

SOLAR okay hi!! So I’ve noticed a while ago that some people will write image IDs in alt text and also paste them in the post! And I was wondering the purpose of that- but I sorta just forgot about it!

But!! I always write alt texts for my art, and other posts I make with images. Someone reblogged some of them and tagged “undescribed” and that confused me (for clarity, note that I am not like, offended by this or anything, only confused! I just don’t understand why :]!!)

so I was wondering if you know why that might be? The reason I ask you is because I don’t know who else I would ask D:

Basically I’m wondering if I should be putting the IDs in the post as well as in alt texts, or if it’s simply a matter of preference!

okay SO! This isn't necessarily an easy answer. There's a few components to this and different things to consider, so let's take it step by step, go over obvious information, and then get to the root of your question. This is not going under a cut, sorry folks but tumblr can be finicky and information under a readmore can get lost fairly easily.

DISCLAIMER: I don't require image descriptions in my daily life, but i've been writing them for four-ish years at this point. The information below is what I've gathered from several "how to do image descriptions" posts over the years. I'm open to any corrections, feedback, or additional information anyone can provide!

Why do people require image descriptions? Pretty simply, for one reason or another, a person can't access the contents of an image. They could be blind or low vision, or have a learning disability that makes reading difficult. An image description can either transcribe text in an image (e.g., a description might read "text saying i love birds") or describe the contents of a picture (e.g., "a cartoon image of a bird on a nest"). People with low/no vision, or who can't read, use a variety of accessibility aids to help them navigate the 'net.

What are some of these accessibility aids? They take various forms - and that's more important than you might think! Screen readers are the most obvious, but they're not used by everyone. Other people use dyslexia-friendly fonts, magnify text, or invert colours or use high-contrast mode to make reading text easier. However, none of these options work with plain images! Someone with dyslexia could probably see the image of a bird on a nest just fine, but may not be able to read the words "I love birds" in a screenshot. Someone with low vision might not be able to see either image. If an image has a description attached, the text of the description will be magnified, or its font will be changed, or it'll be high contrast, or whatever else that person needs, and they can access the image via its description.

Alt text, image descriptions, and pros and cons of each So, what are some of the benefits of alt text? Because alt text is attached to an image, people using screen readers will have the description read to them as soon as they get to the image (if an image has no alt text, the screen reader will just say "image"). Because it's attached to an image, it's harder to lose it - if a post originally doesn't contain image descriptions and someone reblogs with a description later on, there are still going to be reblog chains that don't have the description attached to them. Some people also prefer alt text because image descriptions can make a post look "messy" - some people are less likely to reblog posts with visible image descriptions attached to them. And, for people who use screen readers, it can be really annoying to just hear "image" without knowing if it's followed by a description or not. But as we established, not all people who need image descriptions use screen readers, and not all accessibility aids work with alt text. For people who magnify text, for example, alt text often gets cut off. This is a bit easier to deal with on desktop - there's an XKit extension that puts alt text in a grey box below the image - but on mobile, this can be a real problem. As yet, I don't know for sure if high contrast, inverted colours, or accessible fonts work with alt text on mobile or in the visible alt text the XKit extension provides (if you know, please, tell me!) - but I know they work for image descriptions posted after an image. Alt text is great, but image descriptions are, at the moment, more consistently accessible.

So what should I use? Both? While either alt text or image descriptions are good, the consensus among those who need them seems to be to use one or the other, not both on the same post. For people who use screen readers, hearing the alt text only to immediately hear it repeated can be annoying. I'll use alt text if it's only going to be a couple of words or a single line, but otherwise I tend to use the alt text to say "image described below" to reassure those with screen readers.

But WHY are people tagging my post as undescribed? Bestie you wouldn't believe what people can miss. I've got a viral post that's got a GIF followed by a very obvious image description and it gets tagged as undescribed every so often. If you're using mainly alt text, it's possible that it's not visible on mobile yet - the tumblr app only shows the little alt text box about half the time. Or people get lazy and forget to check, or force of habit means they tag undescribed even though they did notice. Just tag them in the replies and point out that the description is actually there - the undescribed tag exists because a lot of people who need descriptions filter that tag so they don't waste their time on posts they can't access, and they deserve to see accessible posts!

sorry if you've answered this before, but why do you copy the alt text into your reblog? even if you don't have a screen reader, it's already possible to click into the alt text and read it, or on desktop xkit allows you to display alt text under each image.

Hi anon!! I do this primarily because I know some people personally do not prefer alt text descriptions, so I want my blog to always have a plain text ID when I can provide it. There's also the factor that not everyone's tumblr is updated to the same thing level and not everyone uses xkit, so it's also kind of to cover my bases. I do my best to ease the inconvenience of the repetition by saying "ID copied from alt text" when needed!

On the one hand, I get it. It's really frigging annoying coming across that kind of stuff, why can't people just tag their shit, etc etc.

On the other hand, there are solutions. Consider getting a blacklisting extension like Tumblr Savior. My blacklist is over a hundred terms long, and it's full of stuff I don't want to see, sometimes just because I'm not in the fandom.

It vanishes posts that have the blacklisted term anywhere in the post, not just the tags. There's an option to show that the post is hidden and why it was hidden, with the ability to unhide it. Or it can just make them disappear completely.

It even has a whitelisting option, where posts that contain a blacklisted term but ALSO a whitelisted term are not blocked, so if you're okay with seeing a certain kind of content from one fandom but not another you can tailor your preferences. I once used it (briefly) to block a mutual who was having a blorbo breakdown in another fandom, but whitelisted the fandom we were both in. Worked great, and I removed the blacklist later when they were done freaking out. (Sorry Tally, but you were driving me nuts.)

Downsides? Tumblr Savior specifically is desktop only, but there are mobile options like Washboard which I haven't tried myself. It's also no help if someone's reblogging art or gifs with no text OR tags to block from. (Again, Tally: YOU WERE DRIVING ME NUTS.)

And if extensions are too technical for you, or you use a browser without extensions available (what are you doing with your life) then, uh, turn on 'shorten long posts' in dashboard preferences. It's literally right there, and works on both desktop and mobile. It doesn't disappear them completely, but it shortens them to the same length as a brief text post and lets you scroll past easily. It's great because you may not necessarily want to READ the whole damn thing, but it's still content you're okay with seeing, or would be too complicated to try to blacklist.

It also cuts that damn colour of the sky post off at the knees, rather literally.

Genuine question, why do people insist on plotting on Tumblr? 99% of us have fandom only Discords, so it's not like they're doxxing themselves to random people they won't rp with. Obviously talking about people who have "Discord only rp!" In their ads, not people who roleplay on Tumblr.

But Discord is where you'll eventually roleplay so keeping all the plotting there just makes more sense, you can check every plot point discussed, boundary, preference etc just clicking on the convo and scrolling a bit. Instead of playing the guessing game with the usernames on Tumblr (this explains why so many partners get amnesia when we move to Discord though... they don't really go back to check what we talked about in the early stages. And it's annoying honestly) and anyway going through the pain of switching website.

Not to mention the biggest perk: Discord notifications. Tumblr just isn't good at giving up pop up notifications on Desktop, while Discord does. And even assuming you're using the app... Tumblr notifications are still so bad and unreliable, sorry. Personally, I'm not a fan of having to go to Tumblr constantly to see if people answered me when I could have a pop up on the side of my screen.

I respect my partners who want to plot on Tumblr but tbh I can't see one single pro to all the Tumblr cons and just feels so frustrating for literally no benefit to anyone. But I'd be happier if I knew what reason people have to stick with this website for plotting.

While I've been roleplaying for a few years (around seven, I think?) and have found rp partners on tumblr before, that was always done via rp finders. I've never actually had a dedicated rp blog before, so please bear with me while I figure this all out. lol

My limits with regards to story beats are child abuse, especially CSA, self-harm (especially cutting), religion-based queerphobia, and eating disorders. While I don't mind these themes coming up as, for example, parts of a character's backstory, I would prefer not to have them as a focal point within the roleplay.

With regards to kinks, my hard limits are piss, scat, anything else involving excrements or bodily fluids, feet, raceplay, diapers, and mutilation. For any other kinks that might be a bit "out there" for lack of a better word, feel free to straight up ask if I'm comfortable roleplaying them. I can promise that even if I'm not into them, I won't judge you. I'd be a hypocrite if I did.

“One week off of work. I guess I really needed a break after all. Gavin warned me so many times already to do that. I’m just not like that.” You say to yourself with a sigh.

“Not sure. Feeling any better?” He asks as he wipes a tear from your cheek.

“Yeah… Thanks.”

“For what?”

“Just being here I guess.”

“Anytime, sweetie. What do we got in the fridge? I’ll make some dinner.”

“There’s some leftovers from yesterday we could eat if you want.”

“I meant actually cooking, but fine with me.” Gavin says as he gets up, kisses you on the forehead and disappears into the kitchen.

 You just sit there on the couch, rolled into your blanket, thinking about how strange life can be. How did you ever get lucky enough to even hook up with Gavin in the first place? He is way too sweet for this world. Drowned in your thoughts, you are suddenly snapped back to reality as a hand waves in front of your face.

 “A penny for your thoughts.” Gavin says with a chuckle as he puts down two plates and utensils.

“Huh, what? Oh.” You say sheepishly as you take your plate and quietly start eating.

“Are you alright? You still seem out of it.”

“Ah, give it a day… I’ll be fine.”

“Alright sweetheart.” Gavin answers as he kisses you on your cheek, browsing through the channels on tv.

“Yeah, that’d be bad.” You say as you finish your dinner, filling up your glass.

“Don’t try to overdo it, for your sake.” Gavin warns you, worried about your previous struggles with alcohol.

“I’m sorry, I can’t promise anything tonight.” You answer as you quickly take a big sip, coughing at the burn in your throat.

“Guess I’ll just have to take care of you then. Not that I mind…” He says as he fills up a glass for himself and pulls you into a hug on the couch, blankly watching tv.

“What have I ever done to deserve you? Why are you with me when there are so many other cute girls out there?” You ask as you take another sip.

Special Agent Tortoise (He/Him) and Vita (She/They) descriptions below:

First we have special Agent "Tortoise", real name classified but he is an individual from 13th century Scotland who ended up making some deals with rather...unsavoury individuals of both human and inhuman origin, most of which he was unable to repay, and thus they sealed him away in an amulet and made those he held dearest pay his debts. Since then he has been encased, mostly forgotten to time and forced to reflect on his former life. The amulet has the power of possesion, but only with dead bodies, and he now enters the 21st century in his 5th.

After a good few years of familiarising himself with the world, he was approached by the US government after gaining wind that he had claimed a host, wanting to utilise his many abilities for their own cause. After striking a deal, he agreed and has worked with them for many years, though it hasn't been pleasant or easy for either side. Now he has been placed on--as he puts it--baby sitting duty to keep a close eye on the President and act as a middle man between Cognito and the deeper side of the US Government. Tortoise knows Glenn and Orca, as he and Glenn served in the same regiment and then years later he would become Orca's mentor before she left to join Cognito. "Tortoise and Glenn do not get along" is an understatement, and often you have to yell at them both to put their guns down when an argument gets too heated.

Vita is part of a group of Eldritch beings who have come to Earth and intergrated themselves into society through the means of porclain bodies. These bodies are a mixture of puppetry and bisque dolls, moved around and maniulated freely by their true forms within. Sent here on a scouting mission, Vita found herself curious about humans more than intended, and enjoys her mission despite knowing the fact that they may one day have to leave Earth. Vita was approached by the Robes, with the promise of showing them "human life as intended", and present day remains an ally of theirs.

Presently, they are placed as a less obvious bodyguard for the president. Her duty to her fellow eldritch beings outweighs her alliance to Cognito, so taking on this relatively small task was of no hidnernace to her. They know Otto, much more than Otto would like to admit honestly. Vita knows Otto's father, a being who would very much like to know where his child has been for the past millenia. Other than Otto, Vita does not interact with anyone at Cognito much, much prefering to observe and ask questions when it suits them.

In regards to each other, Vita and Tortoise do butt head. Vita is one to ask many questions, and Tortoise is very secretitve due to feeling shameful about his muddy past. Though they do balance each other out, which is why they were made partners on this assignment, with Tortoise being the brains (used loosely he's not always a genius) and Vita being the brawn (she has a 50/50 success rate on actually catching the bad guy, struggles with noticing subtletises in human emotions).

using Tumblr and XKit Rewritten on Android

I'm seeing a lot of complaints about the Tumblr app, and I wanted to let y'all know that you can get the benefits of desktop Tumblr--including the XKit Rewritten add-on--on Android by using Firefox Beta (or Nightly). (I don't know if you can enable add-ons on iOS, sorry.)

I generally prefer desktop Tumblr over the app because:

I can turn off infinite scroll in my dashboard preferences; and

I can see new features as soon as they're introduced (like the checkmarks or the bells).

Bonus: blocking and reporting spambots takes only one step, not two.

(I pay for ad-free browsing because I can, but if you can't or won't, Firefox also does ad blocking.)

Why I use XKit Rewritten:

I can block individual posts, including reblogs thereof (I use this all the time);

Collapsed queue, which reduces my scrolling through my 200+ queued posts; and

Quick tags, which not only lets me add tags to my own drafts, queued posts, and posts without editing the post, but also lets me define tag bundles (e.g., I have a bundle for "whale weekly, moby-dick, moby dick," because I gotta tag the title both ways).

(There are a lot of other tweaks in XKit Rewritten; those are just my can't-live-without.)

I'm afraid that enabling add-ons in Firefox Beta or Nightly does take a little extra work--here's how--but even without that, running Tumblr in your mobile browser of choice works just fine, and may be a good choice over the app for you!

1) when someone reblogs one of your posts and adds their own tags, can you see the added tags similarly to how you're notified when someone adds onto your post?

2) for the "submit a post" feature, how do you feel about this? should we not use it in general, or if we can- should we recommend others' posts to you, or our own for your opinion? (if you are willing to give it of course)

Depending on your notification settings, yes, you will be alerted of tags. On desktop you can see tags in two places: the quick-view drop down bar (that looks like the lightning bolt), and your activity page (click on the head-and-shoulders icon, then select "Activity," which is between Followers and Drafts).

In notes, tags added to your posts will be slightly gray and always include the #. Regular content added to a reblog will be solid, not-faded text and won't include the #.

Post submission is uncommonly used and mainly seen in community-aggregate type accounts, for example if someone was maintaining a candle spell blog and people submit posts to it. Even so, Asks seem to be more commonly used.

Generally, if you want someone to check out content, on Tumblr you might post a link and @ them, like "hey this seems interesting, any thoughts?", or send an Ask inquiring as to if a person wants to review certain content.

On average however I say sending content to people is only common between people who already have some level of relationship (they reblog each other's posts, engage in the same social circles, etc).

I myself enjoy discussing ideas, but I don't think I'd want to engage in publicly "reviewing" the posts of others, especially if they're made by a third party who didn't ask to have their posts reviewed. I think I would be more comfortable having ideas sent through Asks as more of a regular discussion.

A great way to develop community discussion on ideas is to make your own posts, stating the ideas that you're interested in talking about, and asking specific open-ended questions, such as, "does anyone have thoughts on the structure of this ritual?" or "I'm trying to understand X, are there any thoughts as to why it's included in this?"

Hii so sorry for bothering you but, I love writing I’ve been doing it for a long time. I’d like to post on tumblr but I’m kinda new to it and don’t really know how to use it (gifs, text colors,…) so if it’s okay for you could you maybe teach me how to use it or give me some tips?

HELLO HELLO!!! omg i'm so flattered PLS TT but that's so great to hear that u want to start posting here and join the community!! :D i'll try to make a comprehensive, basic guide, but i'm def not the best with the technical things like color gradients and the like 😅 so if u wanted to explore about that, there r a lot of other blogs here who can show u!

besides that, i'll put below the cut my two cents, and anyone can feel free to add if i forgot anything!:

1. gifs! i'm gonna say right off the bat that i don't use gifs a lot, if not, at all. but there r a lot of gifs on tumblr that u can find and use!! usually if u search up the thing u want a gif of, u could probably find it, but pls remember to credit someone if u use their gif!! and if they ask u to like/rb their post if u save it, then pls respect that as well!!

2. text colors: ngl, they're really sparse and a little ugly 😅😅 at least the ones tumblr provides, so a lot of people either just stick to the plain text color or they go on desktop and do the fancy custom coloring w hex numbers and things. i really don't know how to do that (?) but again, if u ever want to learn, i can point u to someone who can show u! but at some points, i do like using the text colors one at a time to make things stand out more against the plain text! to use the colors, just select the text accordingly and u can press a color or press it again to undo it

that's what it looks like on my end! ^

3. text fonts: personally, tumblr's method of doing this is really annoying sjxbksnfh but you can change the font of an entire paragraph without selecting it. the font button is the "Aa" in the left corner above ur keyboard. u essentially have to just click thru until u figure out which one you'd like depending on the aesthetic ur going for! a lot of people ik here just use this regular text in the three different sizes, or they go to like,, copy paste generators online and find a font they like their instead! i do use those frequently, so lmk if you'd like the link to the one i use!

4. tags: one of the most important ways to get ur works out into the world esp when ur just starting off is thru the tags! to tag ur fic, it's the hashtag symbol to the right above ur keyboard. u wanna use tags that pertain to ur fic, so try avoiding tagging ur fic w things its not (like if it's angst, don't put fluff). some common things i tag my fics w are "(group/idol) x reader" "(group/idol) drabbles" "(group/idol) social media au" etc. and usually if it's a pretty known/used tag, it'll appear while ur typing it in as well!

5. navigation menus: writers here usually have a pinned post or a post w a link to a "navigation" post or masterlist! i have my navi pinned, but it essentially is a central place where i link everything that i'd like people to see or things readers/other writers would want to find! things that include: masterlists, about me, faqs, recently posted works, etc!

6. fic formatting: it's unfortunate, but a lot of readers r put off by some types of formatting, which is why a lot of people stick to plain text color and plain text font. usually, u wanna include the title, the idol pairing, word count, genre, and any warnings abt the fic. none of these r required, ofc, but i recommend it! and most people do prefer that if ur fic is over 500 words, that u should out a "keep reading" bar after a paragraph or two! a keep reading bar is like the one i used at the beginning of this post, and u just go to a new line and type ":readmore:" and press enter, and it'll form for u! some people use pictures as a little border as well btwn their intro section and the actual fic.
