Welcome Home!

We wanted to make sure everyone has plenty of time to create, as we gear up for six weeks of Magicians goodness! So this is your three-week reminder.

From Jan. 27-Mar. 9, 2025, Eastern time, we’re welcoming fanworks of all types celebrating The Magicians (Lev Grossman/SyFy). This low-key challenge focuses on a series of weekly themes, along with an overall event theme. Throughout, both new works and additions to WIPs are welcome. Plus, existing WIPs that don’t match any of our themes are welcomed with open arms in Week 6!

This challenge takes place on AO3 and Tumblr. To participate, you don’t need to sign up (though we do have instructions for posting so that we can share your work). You may create as many or as few things as you want. We have a Welcome Home AO3 Subcollection, and we'll reblog your work here and gather it in our masterlist.

The overall theme for the entire event is Welcome Home! If you would like to create something for the overall theme, these are welcome anytime while the event is open.

In addition, here are the weekly themes. If you miss your week, you’ve got a second chance during Week 6, our Free Space/Catch-Up week! Want to continue an existing WIP but it doesn’t match any of our themes? Send it during Week 6!

All types of fanworks are welcome! Yes, yes, yes to fic, art, edits, vids, cosplay, crafting, podfic, fanmixes, pinboards, moodboards, and more! Any number of submissions you like. You can even send us multiple chapters of the same work as separate entries—either for different themes, or the same theme! (If sharing on Tumblr, please make separate posts for separate entries.)

Please let us know which theme you chose, and make sure your work either:

WEEK 1: Jan. 27-Feb. 2, Home—What constitutes “home” to the characters? What do they think of “home,” good or bad?

WEEK 2: Feb. 3-9, "It's been a long time"—It could be a long time since characters saw each other, or a long time engaged on a task like the mosaic. Special note: The 7th anniversary of The Magicians 3x05, “A Life in the Day,” is Feb. 7. We’d love to see Mosaic Fic.

WEEK 3: Feb. 10-16, Seasonal/holiday—Whether or not it’s the current season/holiday right now (any are welcome). This could include “vibes” or “ambience” for the readers to enjoy in connection with a particular holiday (haunted house for Halloween; romance for Valentine’s Day—which falls this week). If the season or holiday is not specifically referenced in the content, please let us know which one it is.

WEEK 4: Feb. 17-23, Magical creature—A being from the show or books, or from mythology/folklore, or one you make up.

WEEK 5: Feb. 24-Mar. 2, Returning after absence (or returning to being themselves).

WEEK 6: Mar. 3-9, Free space/catch-up week! If you are writing for the theme of a prior week, please let us know which one. If you’re adding to an existing WIP that doesn’t match any theme, it belongs here.

Happy one year post-iversary to my Benedict fic! I wrote this because Benedict is THE most relatable character in the entire show for me, and I love him so much, and he never gets the appreciation he deserves. So this is my tribute to him, and I hope it does him a little more justice than the show (or the books!) ever gave him.

Warm Up Masterlist and Wrap-Up

We're so thrilled you've all joined us on this journey! From December 1 through our extension day December 8, 2024, twelve creators provided us with forty-three individual entries to Warm Up! This included thirteen artworks and thirty short written works of fic (and/or poetry, in two cases). They're all listed below for you to enjoy anytime.

The challenge focused on micro Magicians fanworks of all types, welcoming both new works and additions to existing WIPs. The “warm up” theme could include vibes that are warm, cozy, related to winter, being hot (in any sense of that word), warming up or preparing for a big event, just starting out in something like magic, and other creative takes. Read more about Warm Up.

Happy one year (yesterday, actually) to my favorite fic I've written! I didn't know if there would be an audience for a fully platonic Queliot fic, but it was very important to me to showcase their friendship, and how platonic love is equally important and valid to romantic love. Warm Up: Catch-Up Day

Hello, Magicians friends! We're so thrilled with all the entries for our Warm Up challenge so far! Honestly, they are so wonderful; they truly warm our hearts. We know "you can't solve it with math," but it's inspiring to see that so far we have 22 entries of all types from 8 different fanworks creators. We can't wait to experience more. Please keep them coming!

We know you're eagerly working—and appreciating—so we just wanted to let you know that we have a "silent catchup day" planned for Dec. 8 (Eastern time). We've decided to make this official, so you have more time to finish, and we have more time to enjoy! We just don't want this to end!

But end it must. The event will come to a hard close at the start of Monday, Dec. 9, Eastern time. The AO3 collection will close at that time. We'll stop reblogging entries posted after 11:59 PM Eastern on Dec. 8 (but if yours posted in time and hasn't been reblogged after a few hours, please follow the instructions under "not sure if we saw your work").

Following the close of the challenge, we'll be posting a masterlist of all the works, and inviting everyone to view the completed collection.

As a reminder, our future challenges will also be open to WIPs. You can start a new WIP for this event, and continue it in a future one. Queliot foxes!

A very happy birthday to my pal @tbraves24! I hope you have a wonderful day! Your enthusiasm for all things Brakebills South always makes me happy 🧡

Created as well for the Warm Up challenge of @magiciansfanworksextravaganza

I love the concept that despite the chill of wintry Antarctica, fur keeps them nice and warm. Instead of Qualice, I always wished it were Queliot foxes, especially since Quentin and Eliot go to Brakebills South together in Lev's book. I love snow and winter, and Arctic foxes. Both Lev and the show depict so beautifully what it would be like to be a fox in the snow--so warm, getting to play, an existence of pure joy--and I can easily imagine how bonding it would be especially for Queliot, with their worries and self-doubt, to have their powerful connection reinforced by loving each other as foxes as well. Rather than making things weird for them, at least in the context of my fic, it's going to build on the warmth they already have between them, and make sure things stay hot even when life gets challenging.

In the drawing, Eliot and Quentin's faces hover over their fox selves. When I paint this, you'll see that the background is all a snowy scene, with the foxes as the reality. The faces will be somewhat ghostly, just faint suggestions to indicate the inner minds of the foxes.

In the snow, Eliot and Quentin find one another quickly. Being a fox is, in some ways, like a shortcut to their inner selves. No matter what else may affect them, they love one another deeply.

It's damned cold out there. But being a fox is fun. And they have more than fur to keep them warm.
