Silent Mass presents: Black Wing
The lead track ‘Black Wing’ is a song about the sadness of an unsatisfied life. The song itself is disorienting and at other times dreamy and almost illusory complete with tribal rhythms and a repetitiveness that draws the listener in.
Tumblr media
Silent Mass invites disciples of Post-Punk, Ethereal Wave, Shoegaze, and 90s Alternative to a wailing wall of sound that is irresistible for anyone who has prayed for a darker and heavier Enya or is beckoned to embark on a sonic pilgrimage through territories claimed by The Cranberries, Chelsea Wolfe, Cranes, and Dead Can Dance.
In sun-drenched pre-pandemic Los Angeles, Silent Mass emerged as a solitary pursuit by Ammo Bankoff. Her debut single, a cover of ‘Total Recall’ that Big Takeover Magazine called “melancholic escapist dreamery,” was released in 2020 on Dune Altar as part of the charity compilation ‘Do You Feel That Way Too? A Tribute to Adrian Borland & The Sound.’ Shortly after, she relocated with audio engineer and guitarist Robert Duncan to join drummer and producer Alex Posell in NYC.
Encompassing haunting vocals and lush guitar lines with primal percussive rhythms that nod to Ammo’s punk-infused youth, Silent Mass released two more singles, ‘Rose + Crown’ and ‘A Cold War City’ in 2021. “Ammo recalls so many different artists (Kate Bush, Jane Siberry, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive), while not sounding particularly like any of them very much. This is melancholic loaded reverie, capable of entrancing you into Lynchian territory” noted The Spill Magazine. Their latest single "The Great Chaos" "finds beauty in the spiral of self-discovery. It's a love song about mourning a version of your past self," proclaims Ammo.
Currently hailed as “ethereal Brooklyn goths” by Brooklyn Vegan, Silent Mass will get you into a “dreamy state” with a sound that has disseminated to sold-out shows as far as Berlin and Los Angeles. They have shared the stage with occult rockers True Widow and played NYC’s five-day New Colossus Festival. In honor of the Summer Solstice, their debut album ‘The Great Chaos’ is due to be released on June 20th, 2024. The songs unfold as a collection of vignettes, illuminating dark, hidden areas of consciousness. Each track channels themes of self-alienation, distorted emotions, restlessness, self-forgiveness, and realization. The memories from these periods emerge like stills taken from a film—sometimes blurred and disorienting, other times dreamy and almost illusory.

I know I have a larger following of Video Game Enjoyers™️ on this account than film. If you aren’t very familiarized with David Lynch’s work -- I cannot stress enough the impact he has had on your life without you knowing it. I promise you your favorite video game would not exist without him (there are certainly countless others that are not pictured here). The impact he had across all art industries is insurmountable, but the impact he had on video games specifically cannot be overstated.
He was your favorite game designer's favorite film director. And I simply guarantee you that you owe him more than you know.

We here on tumblr.gov sure get into a lot of tiffs over what does and does not constitute monsterfucking. And the moment I laid eyes on this post, I knew I was gonna have to press-gang my bestie into creating this, our finest work,
The Monsterfucker Iceberg

@tinynaught pulled most of the names and did the initial sorting; I helped flesh it out and created the finished product. Feel free to fight amongst yourselves.
Order is based entirely on the looks you would get telling people you wanna fuck that; logistics were not strictly taken into account.

The Solemn Requiem Mass for Rudolph Valentino, August 30, 1926. The mass was conducted in St. Malachy's Church by the Rev. Edward F. Leonard, the rector, shown in center at the altar. The Great Lover had collapsed five days earlier and had had surgery for a perforated ulcer mimicking appendicitis at the New York Polyclinic Hospital. He died of sepsis on Aug. 23. He was 31 years old.

Neo Metal Sonic is cool because they become a dragon and have hella cool style but also sad because it's the closest thing we've seen to Metal Sonic showing their own individuality, separation from just being a metal(adjective) sonic(noun) instead being Neo(adjective) Metal-Sonic(noun), and that they lose their freedom of choice once eggman comes back and don't even have the voice to complain about it.
Neo Metal Sonic is self-destructive in their individuality, but when they were standing atop the world, do you think they could see the stars through the storm?

kennderland is a fun crackship bc you know they’d be so messed up like what little art I’ve seen of them is mostly cute and fluffy but their flavours of survival horror protagonist would compliment each other in a not so healthy way if you think about it and I never see this explored in their art esp not art of Leon on his own

Silent Times
Tumblr media
“The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.”
That’s how the Gospel wraps up the Christmas story. You’ve got all the amazing events surrounding the birth of Jesus. And then?
Not much of anything. Apart from finding Jesus in the Temple, there’s nothing until Jesus is 30.
Biblical scholars refer to this as the Silent Years. The Bible falls silent. Because there’s nothing to see here.
But just because there’s nothing to see, that doesn’t mean that nothing is happening. So what is happening?
The Gospel tells us, “the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.” Which means?
When it comes to the life of Jesus, this is God leading by example. How? Think of the surrender to God’s will we see in the Gethsemane Prayer (“…yet not as I will, but as You will.”). That’s probably the most recognizable example of God setting a pattern for us with the life of Jesus. But it’s far from the only one.
The Silent Years are the same thing. God is setting a pattern for us. So what’s the pattern?
That in those times in our lives when it seems like nothing is happening. Like what we’re doing doesn’t make any difference. Like our prayers don’t matter. Like we’re stuck.
That’s when we have a choice. We can let ourselves get frustrated by that stuck feeling. Or we can turn to God, and let Him use this Silent Time.
We can let go of our timetables, our schedules for what has to happen and when. Drop up our wisdom about how things have to work. And let ourselves be filled with God’s wisdom.
Because in those Silent Times, that’s when God is doing the unseen work on us that needs to be done. There’s nothing to see, because it’s all happening on the inside.
If we give the Silent Times to God, God will use them to change us, to develop us, to grow us.
If we let God use them, the Silent Times will be our schools of patience, of faithfulness, of wisdom, of endurance, of courage, of strength.
Because the Silent Times are when God teaches us what to trust. And what not to trust.
To not trust in our own understanding. To not jump off after our own ideas, or whatever grabs our attention. To let go of thinking that we have to do it all by ourselves.
And, instead, to trust Him. To trust that God will lead. And that God will provide.
Doing that? Using the Silent Times well? It’s hard. One of the big reasons that it’s hard?
Notice that this time in Jesus’ life is known as the “Silent Years.”
While I would be totally fine with the Silent Afternoon. Or, better yet, the Silent Minute-and-a-Half. This stuff takes time. Why?
I can tell you one of the reasons. If it’s just a Silent Minute-and-a-Half, or even a Silent Afternoon? You and I can do that on our own. We can fake our way through that.
That’s why it can take years. Because God’s got to help us get over ourselves. And that can take some time.
But that’s got to happen first. Before we can ever grow and change. Before God can ever trust you and me with all that He has planned for us.
So as we wrap up a year that we will be happy to see behind us. Set yourself up to grow and change in the New Year.
Starting today, make the time every day. To spend with God.
Make the time during the day. To spend with God.
When you do, ask God to help you get over yourself. Ask God to help you rely on Him.
Ask God to make you into someone that He can trust with all that He has planned for you.
Make this New Year your Silent Time.

COLOSSAL
Swans, Plants, and Fragmented Figures Warmly Embrace in Yool Kim’s Paintings
November 28, 2024
Art
Grace Ebert
Warmth permeates Yool Kim’s most recent body of work, which portrays tangled masses of limbs and swans in rich palettes of reds, pinks, and oranges.
Laying dense lines in acrylic paint, the Seoul-based artist examines the interactions between living things and their sometimes contradictory desires. Her new paintings entwine fragmented iterations of human figures with graceful black and white birds, monsteras, and ferns to explore peace and equality.
“I wanted to express the beauty of being able to care (for) the weak and taking care of each other, without a sense of superiority and inferiority in living things that are set by the world,” Kim tells Colossal. “By hugging, touching, or leaning on each other, I highlighted the meaning of connection and warmth.”
As with earlier bodies of work, this series similarly explores the fractured nature of the self. Kim shares that she’s feeling calmer and more tranquil these days, which is reflected in the ways figures stretch to embrace one another.
“I also wanted to express that I have many egos and personalities within me; I am a human being full of complexity who cannot grasp existence as a single disposition,” she adds. “I’m always considering myself.”
Kim will show paintings in several exhibitions this spring, the first of which opens in March at Hall Spassov in Seattle.
