Oh yea we might have AOTS here. A detective series with amazing production values? You can’t get enough of these. Anytime a show has gorgeous art and a letterbox effect I’m sold. A lot of people are likening it to hyouka, but since I haven’t seen that I don’t have the frame of reference. For me it gives off a mix of Kyokou suiri and mars red actually. Weird combination, but the art style mixed with the detective aspect feel like those two shows.

I found things a little confusing at some points with how they show the MC in the suspect’s clothes as a way of recreating the “crime” scene, but once I got used to that it wasn’t too bad. I assume that’ll be a recurring method he uses to reconstruct and solve cases. The storyboarding and direction are beautiful and I love the muted aesthetic.

It’s cool this takes place in Gifu as well, same Gifu from Hensara last season so that city is getting a lot of free tourist promo as of late!

Nice introduction overall to the series with the first case being a rather harmless misunderstanding. Probably would’ve been easier for buddy to have just done a proper confession to Yoshiguci instead of taking her bag, but all’s well that ends well. Wish the best for them. Hopefully the story continues with the amazing visual storytelling like we saw in that river scene with the two leads. I love those flashy cuts with the backgrounds changing.

But RIP to the strawberry tarts that Osanai had been looking forward too all episode 😢 stayed after school and helped on that case for nothing smh.

Can’t wait for next episode.. and that ED is gorgeous!

First Impression: SHOSHIMIN: How to Become Ordinary
Tumblr media
Kobato and Osanai have a deal. The socially awkward boy and quiet girl will help one another “become ordinary.” To do so, they will follow a series of rules for what it means to be an ordinary person. Having been classmates in middle school and now attending high school together, the two will work together to achieve this goal. But it’s not easy to blend in when you’re special, and Kobato is just that. When a friend asks him to help him find a missing item, he deduces not only where it is but who hid it, while Osanai explains the motive. There’s something special about both of them, and they may not be able to achieve the normalcy they want after all.

Just finished Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary last night and damn was that a smart and beautiful show. It's like, what if Sherlock and Moriarty were childhood friends in suburban Japan? The production on this one was absolutely gorgeous start to finish. They did this very fun thing where they would show the characters in detailed metaphorical landscapes rather then where they actually were. So many anime set their scenes in simplistic locations so they can cut costs and this show consistently did the opposite.
Vague spoilers under the cut but if you enjoy mysteries at all you should absolutely give this one a shot
I love the mysteries the kids solve and the equal gravitas with which the show portrays them. The case of how someone made perfect hot cocoa without getting the sink wet is handled with the same weight as a kidnapping.
And this plays perfectly into our main character and is core flaw. He's a boy who thinks, rather than one who feels or acts. So even when there's real stakes, all he can ever do is solve the puzzle. The emotional core of the story, the clever fox who is friends with the wolf, wraps up in a way that is deliciously unsatisfying. It's bittersweet in a way that I really appreciate. Our heroes do not overcome their flaws.
The last episode ends with a last minute cliffhanger and a second season has already been announced. I can't wait to see what these two get up to next.

detective anime 4
thought this episode was a little bit weaker than the others. the classroom deduction scene felt a little dry whereas other scenes where something mundane is being solved felt more interesting, both in content, reasoning, and visual presentation. looks like osanai got her vengeance but damn does it not really feel good lol
interested in learning more about kobato and osanai still, as well as seeing how their journey to change themselves goes

Another day, another anime preliminary opinion video from me! This time, it's about SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary!
Fun fact: I tried to replicate how the eyes are colored (minus shading) in the show for the thumbnail! This will probably be the one and only time that my little mascot fella has an eye that's not their regular kind in the thumbnail.

The SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary Anime Is Getting a Second Season
It has been announced that the SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary anime is getting a second season that is scheduled to premiere in Japan in April 2025. The story focuses on Jōgorō Kobato, who wishes to live a quiet and ordinary life after a painful experience. He and Yuki Osanai form a “mutually beneficial relationship” as Yuki also wants the same thing. They start high school as classmates with…

The Weekly Orbit [7/22/24]
The Weekly Orbit is a weekly column collecting and refining my more casual anime- and manga-related thoughts from the previous week. Mostly, these are taken from my tumblr blog, and assume familiarity with the works covered. Be wary of spoilers! Hello anime fans. I’m going to keep things brief and without too many pictures this week. I’ve been under the weather, so I didn’t have as much time to…

Who knew such evil was lurking behind such pretty eyes.. absolute mind fuck of an episode. There’s nothing normal about Kobato and Osanai and there never will be. To think she planned her entire kidnapping to get Isawa arrested is some dastardly shit. Bravo writing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So every thing that they’ve done this summer including the desert tour was meticulously planned out by Osanai to get the optimal conditions for the kidnapping.. I can’t even imagine the level of planning that had to go into that and props to the author for even coming up with this. I thought it was weird that Osanai wanted Kobato to do the desert tour, but never would’ve guessed this was the reason.
Getting Sanae indebted to her and having her pull the strings from inside the group is also crazy. You almost wonder if Osanai had been planning this since middle school lmao.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she would’ve gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for that meddling mom of hers 😂. Mom letting the fact that Osanai had been up late at night on the phone was the final nail in the coffin, guess there’s just only so many variables you can account for. Chilling end to the episode tho, almost scared of Osanai now.
Tumblr media
Cinematography and scene composition in this episode was also incredible. For 25 minutes of Kobato and Osanai sitting at a table it went by in a flash because of the direction and buildup to her confession.

The summer 2024 has been on fire—at least when it comes to the music. While it lacks the big splashes of last season, like YUNGBLUD’s “Abyss,” summer 2024 has provided great openings one after another from series like The Elusive Samurai, Roshidere, and Oshi no Ko. I don’t envy our man Ryan in selecting and cutting just five (plus one honorable mention) from the season, but here they are!
We hope you enjoy our selections! Please follow us and share our video on Instagram, Tiktok, Mastodon, and X (Twitter)!
Here are the OPs we selected:
“Sweet Memory” by Eve, SHOSHIMIN: How to Become Ordinary
“Plan A” by DISH//, The Elusive Samurai
“Tsuyogaru Girl” by BotchiBoromaru feat. Mossa (Necry Talkie), Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!
“Fatal” by GEMN (Kento Nakajima & Tatsuya Kitani), Oshi no Ko Season 2
“1-Ban Kagayaku Hoshi” by Sumire Uesaka, Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
Honorable Mention: “Homunculus” by Vaundy, My Hero Academia: You’re Next
What’s your favorite OP of the season?
