tbh i don’t think it matters whether ed chose to shave off his beard at the academy and then lied and said it was regulation or whether it was actually regulation bc either way the point of the losing the beard was to visualize the significance of ed taking the act of grace in the first place. signing away his life to protect stede and giving up the title of blackbeard was the REAL decision he made, and whether or not the staff at the privateering school told him to shave off the beard or not, he had basically already decided to get rid of it when he chose to give up blackbeard for stede.

personally when it comes to the 2.04 scene i interpreted ed’s “i had the crazy notion to shave it off” as just… lying to mary and anne. bc even if he decided to shave it off with no input from the privateering academy, playing it off like a random crazy impulse and not part of a very clear-headed series of decisions involving getting rid of the blackbeard mantle and going all-in with stede was definitely downplaying the circumstances around shaving his beard. and he can’t tell the girls abt how down bad he was for stede without getting bullied for all eternity.

also summing it up with “crazy notion to shave it off” and following it up with “immediately regretted it” was definitely part of ed being passive aggressive towards stede. downplaying the decision but also being like “yeah that was a mistake. not that it was like a huge moment or anything like it wasn’t a big deal. it meant nothing. i wasn’t that invested in it or anything. but yeah i shouldn’t have done it, immediate regret for sure. it’s whatever tho. i don’t even care” is 100% meant to make stede feel bad

also smthng abt how for ed this was a decision to get rid of a title he’s been tired of for years to pursue happiness with a man he’s fallen in love with and it’s not rlly much of a choice for him, obviously he’s gonna stop being blackbeard and by extension shave the damn beard. but like everyone else (stede, izzy, probably anne and mary if they knew abt what rlly happened and that’s why he lies to them abt it) thinks it’s this huge sacrifice and it’s this huge source of guilt for stede especially. but ed’s literally like “it’s just a beard” bc rlly the beard/blackbeard means nothing when stede’s life is on the line

I've been wondering about this for a while. We know that Ed said at the Academy that 'the beard wasn't regulation, so it had to go', but to me it always sounded like an excuse. Meanwhile, in Fun and Games, Ed says he 'had a crazy notion to shave it off, immediately regretted it' Of course, he was incredibly hurt there, so of course he lashed out, but was it the truth? Which would then of course make it even more heartbreaking, because he showed Stede himself, his face. Ed. And Stede had run away.

But, was he actually made to shave off his beard and he was just relieved that he had an excuse to get rid of it, or did he shave it off and then found a perfect excuse??

The interesting thing about tmagp episode 9 is that, from one perspective, it's about a pair of dice that kill you if you roll a crit fail. And in TMA that would be very End-coded. Games of chance were End-coded, and death is obviously The End. Open and shut case.

Except it's not, here. The statement giver had never seen anyone roll a 2 before he ran into Gary in that coffee shop, even after thousands of rolls. That's not an End artifact. Those dice are going out of their way not to kill anyone, save those who try to part with them.

The compulsion to roll feels like the Web, but is it? Certainly games of chance can become addicting, but I don't think that's the whole story. The Web is about the fear of the loss of control, yes, but it's also about something else controlling you instead. Here that something else is an embodiment of "random" chance - although again, it's not properly-random, not even pseudorandom. I have thoughts on that but they're best addressed further on.

Weirdly, of all the manifestations of Fear from TMA, this statement seems most akin to Jude Perry's - rolling the dice with other people's lives and fortunes, for the thrill of sometimes devastating them.

Which brings me back to the possibility of AU Fears.

In the Protocolverse, why shouldn't there be a Fear associated with chance and luck and fate and misfortune that happens for no good reason? A fear of lacking control and losing everything, without anyone else necessarily having that control.

This is where the way the dice are rigged becomes possibly meaningful. Their outcomes aren't random - they're what humans expect random to look like. They operate according to the gambler's fallacy, where the longer a chain of bad luck you have the more you're due for a good roll, and vice versa. Snake eyes aren't just a normal outcome of the 1-in-36 chance of rolling 2d6 - they're reserved for when someone is cursed with truly rotten luck. Notably that isn't true of boxcars: those just happen sometimes, without prerequisite.

Logically, a Fear of Misfortune wouldn't operate on the actual rules of probability, would it? It would be shaped by the superstitions of those that feared it.

(Also, I hope this statement puts the "they're not fears they're desires!" theory to bed. This guy didn't want the dice, and didn't especially want to roll them, but seemed compelled to anyway.)
