Accustomed to Disasters, Houston Didn’t See This One Coming (NYT) The storm that hurtled through Houston late Thursday surprised a city long accustomed to bouts of serious weather. The Astros kept playing baseball, even as rain and wind whipped into the team’s closed-dome stadium. Many people, following their evening routines, were caught unaware on bikes or at the gym. By Friday, all across town—but particularly in the dense and verdant inner loop neighborhoods that radiate from the city’s skyscrapers—Houstonians confronted a cityscape of debris left by winds of up to 100 mph, as strong as some of the hurricanes that have hit the city in recent years. Decades-old oak and pecan trees were ripped in two or knocked over at the roots, flattening fences or blocking roadways. Stop signs leaned at sharp angles. Highway billboards buckled. Residents spoke of horizontal rain and detritus swirling into the air, and wondered whether a tornado had passed through. “It was like we were in the middle of a blender,” said Martha Rosas.

An airstrike kills 20 in central Gaza and fighting rages on (AP) An Israeli airstrike killed 20 people in central Gaza, mostly women and children, and fighting raged across the north on Sunday. The airstrike in Nuseirat, a built-up Palestinian refugee camp in central Gaza dating back to the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, killed 20 people, including eight women and four children, according to hospital records. Palestinians reported more airstrikes and heavy fighting in northern Gaza, which has been largely isolated by Israeli troops for months and where the World Food Program says a famine is underway. The Civil Defense says the strikes hit several homes near Kamal Adwan Hospital in the town of Beit Lahiya, killing at least 10 people. Footage released by the rescuers showed them trying to pull the body of a woman out of the rubble as explosions echo in the background and smoke rises.

DRC army says it stopped attempted coup involving US citizens (Reuters) The leader of an attempted coup on Sunday in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been killed and some 50 people including three American citizens arrested, a spokesman for the Central African country's army told Reuters. Gunfire rang out around 4 a.m. in the capital Kinshasa, a Reuters reporter said. Armed men attacked the presidency in the city centre, according to spokesman Sylvain Ekenge. Another attack took place at the nearby home of Vital Kamerhe, a member of parliament who is tipped to become speaker, Kamerhe's spokesman, Michel Moto Muhima, and the Japanese ambassador said in posts on X. Ekenge named Christian Malanga, a U.S.-based Congolese politician, as the leader of the attempted coup. He said Malanga first attempted and aborted a coup in 2017 and that one of the American citizens arrested was Malanga's son.

All expect President Jair Bolsonaro to lose, but they differ about the size of his defeat

Just after 8am on September 27th, five days before the first round of a presidential election, a worker from Brazil’s most prominent polling firm, Datafolha, stops pedestrians at a five-way intersection in São Paulo to ask whom they plan to vote for. He selects his subjects—an old man in a baseball cap, a young woman with a nose piercing—according to age and sex quotas that reflect the electorate. He asks them to point to their candidate’s name on a chart (circular, to lessen bias), and records their answers on a tablet.

Over the next few days 440 Datafolha workers in 332 municipalities planned to speak to some 6,800 voters. Within hours of the final interviews, the results would be announced on a nightly news programme watched by a third of Brazilian households.

Although in-person polls have long been considered the best way to gauge voting intentions in a vast and unequal country, changes in society and polling are putting that belief to the test. Increased access to mobile phones (now in 95% of households) and the internet (90%) have brought in new pollsters and techniques. The pandemic speeded up these trends. As a result, 974 polls have been registered at the electoral court in this election season, twice as many as during the previous presidential race, in 2018. The share of in-person surveys has dropped from 70% to 60%.

Nearly all polls show Brazil’s right-wing populist president, Jair Bolsonaro, trailing his rival, leftist former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, by at least six percentage points (see our poll tracker online). Mr Bolsonaro says that any result other than his re-election would be “fraud”. He denounces major pollsters like Datafolha and Ipec, which show Lula with such a big lead (14 and 17 percentage points, respectively) that he could win in the first round.

The wide divergence in the polls has led to debates about methodology that echo those that have taken place in the United States and elsewhere. Stakes are high. If Lula’s victory is even as big as Datafolha suggests, Mr Bolsonaro’s bogus claims of fraud will convince fewer people.

No último final de semana (15 e 16 de fevereiro), foi realizada a 3ª edição do Torneio “Camelo, mamãe?!”, com a participação de nove times de softbol e de três no Beisebol, modalidade que foi a novidade da edição. A equipe de softbol livre do Tôtoro/Bulldogs foi a grande campeã da categoria e entre os iniciantes o Cooper Ladies ficou com o título.

No softbol, os participantes foram: Gecebs, Atibaia, Tozan, Camelo Iniciante,  São josé Wild Eagles, Universo Tata, Tôtoto/Bulldogs,  Cooper Ladies e BFGV. No beisebol, contou com a presença da Medicina Santos/Poli, Camelo beisebol e do São Paulo.

O torneio teve muitas atrações para todas as idades. A banda Solta o Play animou o pessoal, além do show do Palhaço Pipoco, uma oficina de Costura, Oficia de jogos da Escola Supera e de Cosplayers do Alladin, Homem Aranha e Chun-li. O ponto alto do dia, foi a Palestra da fonoaudióloga Licia Verissimo falando sobre o DPAC (Disturbio do Processamento Auditivo Central).

Projeto “Camelo, mamãe?”

No dia 11 de janeiro de 2013 o blog “Camelo, Mamãe?” foi criado. O objetivo do blog é mostrar a aprendizagem, dificuldades, alegrias, tristezas, euforias e decepções de uma mãe que luta para que o seu filho seja aceito por uma sociedade que dita regras de comportamentos e atitudes.

Cristhiane Akie Higashi é esposa de Herbert Higashi e mãe de Gabriel e Nathalia. Quando Gabriel tinha 6 anos foi diagnosticado com DPAC (Distúrbio do Processamento Auditivo Central). Gabriel fez diversos tipos de terapias e acompanhamentos médicos, melhorou muito, não se curou, mas superou vários obstáculos.

Para ajudar ainda mais seu filho em sua melhora, Cristhiane e Herbert buscaram um esporte onde todos possam jogar, onde todos são tratados da mesma forma, não existe diferenças, fortes laços de amizade e familiar. O esporte escolhido foi o beisebol.

Com o esporte Gabriel conquistou sonhos, venceu desafios e principalmente fez amizades verdadeiras.

African migrants face racism, violence in Brazil

The brutal murder of a Congolese man at a Rio de Janeiro beach has cast a harsh spotlight on the ordeals African migrants face in Brazil, the country with the biggest black population outside Africa.

Moise Kabagambe, a 24-year-old migrant who fled to Brazil with his family in 2011 to escape violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was beaten to death with clubs and a baseball bat at the beach-front bar where he worked in Rio's upscale Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood.

His family says a group of assailants attacked him after he demanded payment of two days' overdue wages.

The January 24 killing has unleashed a flood of outrage, grief and soul-searching in Brazil, where many African migrants say they face poverty, violence and double discrimination as both foreigners and blacks.
