Born on this day: fabulous 1950s rhythm and blues queen Ruth Brown (12 January 1928 - 17 November 2006). I have cherished memories of seeing “Miss Rhythm” perform several times over the years at Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly weekenders. Even in declining health, she exuded earth mother warmth and rocked the house. And Brown knew how to milk it for dramatic effect. “The doctors told me I’d never walk again,” she’d declare. “And here I am!” Which always elicited an eruption of applause! Ruth Brown was a woman and a half! For John Waters fans, Brown is synonymous with the role of Motormouth Maybelle in the original (and definitive!) 1988 version of Hairspray. As Brown told NPR in 1997, she almost declined the part. “I had said, well, I'm not going to do this film, especially when they took me to wardrobe and brought that white wig out. I said, not on your life … (But Divine stepped in.) I called him the divine Divine. He came to me, and he said, “Girl, put that wig on your head and make some money.” And I said to him, “No, I'm going to lose every fan I've got in the world if I come out with this white wig.” And Divine said, “Well, I tell you what. Oooh...I can think of Juniper's house rotation going 2 way. One, marries Quartz at the hacked arch because he is the first unattached male and she's the last female...or dig into the mountain side and discover a lost tribe of cave dwellers...with distant connections down dark and dangerous tunnels...(hello new townies)

I did the hacked arch marry with Dash and Bird (they had double bolts) and Bird fell pregnant right away, then lost it before showing any signs (I think I edited it, may want to reput the original in)

Quartz and Jupiter have negative chemistry. If nothing else, it will be a good test of how Icad's rules and acr on default works (he had to make values static because not enough kids. I've got risky on 20 though, so maybe balances out?) Hmmm.

Can you all see the slope on that? Definitely created some lore here...

So we have his house built, pretending that he fenced off the side because a dangerous hole was discovered...(and when I looked in simpe at all the townies I generated by forcing the mailbox...all the "strays" that generated are in his household...so he uncovered an animal fight ring...)

We had two days to play, because according to my timeline, the rest are actually round 10! So wow, last house of the round!

Acr took him and Ruth to bed, but that created a negative reaction (she's married) and he got back out of bed first, then when he tried to flirt she shoved him.

Unfortunately weres apparently have max body...so his want didn't trigger.😒 and I had to select the wolf that walked by because you can't ask to be bitten like in s3 (thanks, Armadillo).

And becoming a wolf changed his personality enough that he now has 2 bolts with Quartz. Unfortunately she doesn't seem to want to get to know him (keeps turning down his advances). They are married, thanks to that hacked arch...and I spawned 30 NPCs in...and am debating adding a downtown- lore in my head being that he found a tribe of cave dwellers, and they have an underground city that we can now trade with...

I've never added a shopping district or a downtown before...

I think that was his mom he just savaged...she walked by at night, and when he loped over to greet her she held out her arms and did a come here motion with her fingers (and it sounded like she clicked her tongue like calling a dog too). Savage want fulfilled, and end of round 9! Next up the family trees and progeny reports!

I started keeping track in the timeline of who changed when...because I'm going to have only wolves very shortly...once I've unlocked the cure naturally I'll start using the creature painting...(maybe only gift cures if the witch has the want to cure someone?)

How old is too old?

You can be exempt from jury duty for simply just being past this age

No one wants to get an envelope that reads, “official jury summons,” in the mail.

Luckily, if you’re age 75 or older, you can request an exemption — a legal reason to be excused without having to report to a judge.

“As a juror, you are in a position of responsibility. You will need to be fair, impartial, and be willing to make decisions that are not based on your personal feelings and biases,” according to the Texas Judicial Branch.

The age cutoff is for that very reason: jurors must be of sound mind and good moral character to sit in.

Psychologists have studied that at a certain point, your brain starts to shrink.

According to a study done by Ruth Peters, by age 70, the decreasing size of your brain picks up more rapidly.

Once you turn 18, you are eligible to participate in jury duty.

If you don’t show up, you will receive a hefty fine between $100 and $1,000 in your mailbox.

If you do show, you will be compensated for your time. In Texas you can earn between $6 and $50 a day, depending on the case.

While it is very rare to get excused, Texas Judicial Branch does lay out a list of exemptions. You can apply for an exemption if you: Are over 75 years of age (You may also request a permanent age 75 exemption.) If you qualify for one of these excuses you will need to consult the judge to determine your participation. Tarrant County has made this process somewhat user-friendly by offering these services online.

On their website, there is a tab for “being excused from serving.”

From there, it will direct you to directions and a website where you can fill out your forms.

If online isn’t your thing, you can also request exemptions by mail, phone, fax, email, or in person.

“Ugh! Jury duty!” That is what many Americans say to themselves if they receive a jury summons in the mail.

But serving on a jury is an important responsibility.

Jurors participate in a public process and fulfill a civic obligation.

The service is supposed to support fairness in civil and criminal trials.

Trying to get out of jury duty isn’t wise, but there are ways legally to opt out of serving.

How to get out of jury duty in Texas

Getting excused from jury duty isn’t guaranteed.

The Texas Judicial Branch has a list of exemptions that people can apply for if they were selected to serve.

Those exemptions include if you:

● Are over 75 years of age (you may also request a permanent age 75 exemption).

● Have legal custody of a child younger than 12 and your service on the jury requires leaving the child without adequate supervision.

● Are a student of a public or private secondary school.

● Are a person enrolled and in actual attendance at an institution of higher education.

Do jurors get paid?

A juror will be paid by the county at least $6 but not more than $50 per day or fraction of a day served.

The commissioners court of a county may choose to reduce or eliminate the daily compensation for prospective jurors who attend court for only one day without actually serving on a jury.

The county may choose to provide additional forms of compensation or reimbursement, including:

● Free public transportation

● Mileage reimbursement

● Transportation cost reimbursement

● Free parking

● Child care facilities

● Free meals

Penalties for not showing up to jury duty

A juror who is lawfully notified to attend court is subject to a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $500 if that juror does the following:

● Fails to attend court in obedience to the notice without a reasonable excuse in a timely matter.

● Files a false claim of exemption from jury service

YOU HAVE AN AEGISLASH???? oh my ARC i literally got a honedge last week!!! any tips for taking care of one? my honedge is really shy (why do people say they’re scary. this guy is scared of his own shadow) so I’ve been gentle but if there’s any species stuff you’ve found out?

Yep, good ol’ Soul! Seems we both ended up with shy swords, huh?

From what I can tell, he seemed more comfortable to be out of his ball when Red Tide was also out, so perhaps you could see about introducing your new pal to a similarly chill Pokémon? Someone to look to for reassurance when he’s nervous or uncertain, essentially taking cues that things are fine and it’s ok to relax. Though that’s probably going to be based on the sorts of Pokémon he’s comfortable with to begin with, rather than just how well their personalities theoretically mesh. Soul more or less picked Red Tide to be that stable figure on his own, so I don’t really have advice on how to go about potential introductions.

Once he was spending more time out of his sheathe I bought one of those densely woven practice target things made for Pokémon to train their cutting or slicing moves with; it seemed like a good way to get an idea of if/how he’d battle in the future, and helped him build up his confidence a bit. Probably also helps that having something to focus and spend energy on can distract from anxiety or the like if it’s present. Only downside was that finding a decent one that’d actually hold up took a few tries, and it wasn’t exactly cheap— make sure it’s rated for stronger Pokémon. Though, I suppose encouraging him to practice on trees might be a valid alternative, so long as it’s not inhabited by wild Pokémon that wouldn’t appreciate the disturbance.

I’d try to give advice on what to do if he evolves, but Soul wasn’t a Doublade for very long before The Rock Shop Incident took place. All I can say for sure is that it seemed better to not treat him much differently than before. Interacting with the two swords as separate entities confused him even when they were both unsheathed.

As for general care, I’d say a general steel type routine works just fine. I did get one of those stones for sharpening blades after seeing that suggested a few places, but I’ve never actually seen him use it, which might just be because he doesn’t battle super often and doesn’t experience the wear he might otherwise. It couldn’t hurt to offer the option, especially since there are plenty of other Pokémon that could make use of it as well. Oh, and don’t worry about how to handle the cloth, it doesn’t seem to get dirty like normal fabric does, it’s just the sheath and blade that need the occasional bath. Soul didn’t like it at first but after I’d say the… third time? He got used to it. I think he likes the buffing at the end now, always spends some time in the light turning and being all shiny haha.

How much of life are you able to still enjoy without having to endure the outing that goes with it?  With technology these days, probably quite a lot.  Lucky us because there is so much to be thankful for when we truly reflect on our lives 🧘, even in these volatile uncertain times,  In the words of my sweet momma Granny Ruth, "We are so richly blessed!" 😇 Yes, yes we are because if you're reading this chances are you have a phone, electricity, internet, running water and so much more.  Any time I'm down I look at my surroundings and remind myself how lucky I am.  And we see you as being lucky today and always and your life improving in ways of which you previously thought impossible.
