Radiator Springs/Dinoco Rust-eze Racing Center/Fireball Beach/Thunder Hollow/Thomasville/Florida International Speedway (Cars)

Takes place after Cars 3.

Is visited by Sora.

It isn’t combat based. Missions include keeping up with McQueen’s top speed by racing down Radiator Springs’ main street, learning how to turn right to go left at Willy’s Butte, driving backwards with Mater, keeping up with Cruz’s top speed on Fireball Beach, avoiding pushy competitors with the Thunder Hollow challengers, and practicing with Cruz at Thomasville, culminating in the Piston Cup race at Florida International Speedway, where the objective is to win against Jackson Storm.

Sora enters the world as a custom-made car mixing a few real-life sports car models before visits to Luigi’s Casa Della Tires and Ramone’s House of Body Art end with him modified into a next-gen race car sponsored by Dinoco (with Tex’s blessing) and with Cruz’s number.

It’s set during Cruz’s first Piston Cup racing season, so McQueen still has Doc’s colors and spends the Florida race as Sora’s crew chief. Also, Ramone wears his “Saludos Amigos” body paint from the epilogue of Cars 3.

As Sora finishes his story, Mater is certainly unhappy with Xehanort’s actions forcing Sora’s hand. “That dad-gum Xehanort”, he says angrily. Extra points if Sora doesn’t get to the part where Xehanort is dead, then Sarge gets in his face and demands him to teach Xehanort a lesson when he gets back in a militaristic manner. “Is that understood,” Sarge yells. Then Sora tries to correct him, but gets cut off and asked again, “Is that understood,” and has to respond, “Sir, yes, sir!”

Of course, during the top speed races, Luigi is the one to signal the race to begin.

In the Radiator Springs race, Sora’s top speed is tracked by Sheriff’s speed radar, and on Fireball Beach, it’s via Cruz’s personal assistant, Hamilton.

If you fail the “Turn Right to go Left” mission, Sora goes flying into the bed of cacti, and Mater fishes him out.

I know I’ll get hate for this, but Cars 2 elements are here. Heck, maybe Mater can’t be present most for the training because he’s busy with Finn and Holley. After all, does he still owe Holley a first date?

I wanted the player character in this world to be Kairi just so Storm can feel the embarrassment of losing to not one, but two “costume girls”.

The Piston Cup race is announced as a 500-lap race, but no game developer is that malicious to force the player to race 500 laps around an oval, so they’d take after the first Cars game and make it twelve laps with the sun slowly lowering throughout the race.

Welcome to Danny & Cruz's ask blog! Mr. McQueen told us about this site so we decided to join! We are adding finishing touches before opening it up but get to know us in the meantime!

Danny Swerves (he/him) is the next gen Piston Cup Racer for Octogain. He doesn't have much to say but if he does, it's usually a sentence. Growing up from a small town in Mexico, Danny started racing at a young age and took it as a career. Once you get to know him, he is a jokester and loves pulling pranks on his fellow competitors.

Cruz Ramirez (she/they) was former trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center and now holds the sponsor of Dinoco wearing the number 51! She grew up watching Lightning McQueen and tried pursuing a career in racing. It wasn't until her idol gave her the chance and confidence to make her dreams come true! Cruz's is very outgoing and tries to bring out the best in others, especially a certain racecar she knows.

HELLO. I'm curious, what do you think Luigi and Guido were doing during the course of Lightning's training at the Florida Rust-eze Center? Would they have been going through training of their own as pitties?

Given how short-lived the Training Center portion of LMQ's training was, I feel like they probably didn't get up to much, alas. They spend the Fireball Beach portion just supporting Lightning, rather than doing their own training, after all. But maybe Luigi did some research about tire pressures.

Somewhere on this godforsaken website, I have a post about my theories on what precipitated Lightning's crash. I don't think Tumblr's search function will do my the favor of ever finding it again, but something that happens with some frequency in NASCAR are wrecks/cautions brought on by blown tires.

Sometimes this is about wear, or debris, or defect, but a lot of the time it's about air pressure. Teams will start with a low tire pressure, because (and this is probably oversimplified) low pressure = bigger contact patch with the track = more grip = ability to go faster without losing the car. Go too fast with flabby tires or try to get too much out of them before they're up to temp, and you can eat them up. In Cars 3, we get a shot of LMQ's tire and its flexing sidewall before it blows, so I could see Luigi as "tire chief" running some numbers with regard to that.

Something that I wonder about is why Guido had any tire changer partner. We know he's fast--wickedly fast, given that he's keeping pace with teams with 4 tire changers, and he's just 1--but he can still only do 1 tire at a time. Adding additional tire changers would shave statistically significant time off LMQ's pit times, almost without a doubt. There are HUGE gains to be made here, and tbh it's a failing of the Rusteze Racing Team if they never explored this, or didn't think to. I think it would definitely take training and practice to find that rhythm, and in all likelihood the stops would be slower before they got faster. But if Cars were about Guido as the main character, I think that'd be his arc. Learning how to stop being a "one-man show!" and work with others. ;)

The Plunge

Deertrail Resort. The site was once the beginnings of an ambitious cliffside getaway, now reduced to a small maze of graffiti-clad masonry. Ez trailed their fingers across a spray-painted mural of a person falling against a vibrant blue background, overlaid with various artist’s tags. Above them, the birds sang against a perfect, clear sky.

It could’ve been peaceful.

At the edge of the ruins, a stone chimney stood upon a curved platform. Cut into the center of the platform was a spiral staircase, descending into the ground. Ez took a breath and began to climb down, down, down. The sunlight and moss gave way to damp concrete, and they found themself at the end of a long, dark hall.

An old feeling seized their chest- a sort of heaviness against their lungs. As their heart heaved, fast and steady, they crept onwards. The hall opened into a large, dark cavity- aged metal walkways suspended over what appeared to be an expanse of inky water. Ez could make out something at the other end, across the catwalk. They approached, carefully. It was casket shaped, with wires blooming from the ends. Ez’s eyes followed the wires up to a panel of small, dim lights built into the wall that winked in the darkness like stars. As they got closer, they could make out dials amidst the lights. Below, beneath the glare of the lights, the casket-like chamber sat. It was transparent, they realized. They touched their hand to the glass.

Within, a sudden shifting jostled them from their contemplation. Their heart raced as their mind sluggishly pieced together what they were looking at.

Reine Fisk, her eyes wide and bleary and furious.

They jumped back. The woman’s fist clunked against the inside of the glass once, then twice, sending webs of cracks across it.

Ez began to run. The chamber shattered. The metal grate of the catwalk creaked and groaned as they bolted across- they were almost across. Their heart hammered against their chest.

A thick hand wrapped around their ankle, forcing them to the ground with a painful thud. The air rushed from their lungs as Queenpin lifted them up, effortlessly. They thrashed vainly against her crushing grip. In one swift movement, she had thrown them clear of the rusted railing.

They were falling.

The dark water rippled below.

Falling. Falling, the jolt of fear that pulls you from sleep. Falling, Alice down the rabbit hole. Falling into another place. Another world.

Falling awake.

The water rushed around them, filling their senses.

Easy does it, a voice inside them whispered. To the surface.

Upwards. Ez breached the water, and gasped the frigid air.

Ground beneath their feet.

After Lightning accidentally destroys a simulator, Sterling then tells Lightning in his office that his racing days are ending, and that in order to provide Sterling with revenue, he will be selling legacy merchandise instead. Lightning travels there, only for Rusty and Dusty to tell him that in order to pay for the facility, they sold Rust-eze to a car named Sterling, who introduces him to his trainer, Cruz Ramirez, who is a big fan of him. Lightning calls Rusty and Dusty, the CEOs of Rust-Eze, saying that he wants to train like Jackson Storm, and they inform him that they're opening the new Rust-eze Racing Center. She tells him to try something new, and Lightning decides to start training again. Lightning tells his girlfriend Sally that he doesn't want to be forced into retiring, like Doc, but also that he can't race like before. Lightning has mostly been watching a video of the last race of his late mentor Doc Hudson. Lightning tries to catch up, but pushes himself so hard that he spins out of control, has one of tires blown out, and collides with the wall, launching him into a rollover crash, leaving him seriously injured.įour months later, Lightning is recovering back in Radiator Springs but is afraid he might never be able to race again. On the last lap of the final race of the season, Lightning has the lead, but Storm, Danny Swervez and Chase Racelott catches up and overtakes him. After a few more races, most of the other veterans (including Bobby and Cal) have either retired or dismissed by their sponsors to make way for the Next Gens. One day, a rookie named Jackson Storm, who is part of a new generation of race cars who use the latest technology to run faster than veteran racers, comes from nowhere and beats him. Mater leaves and Lightning soon races with his rivals Bobby Swift and Cal Weathers. Lightning then asks Mater to give him some quiet. Lightning McQueen, now a 7-time Piston Cup champion, is preparing for a big race, when suddenly Mater visits him in his trailer, keeping him company. People start to wonder and ask when he might retire." Plot is not an old man, but he's one of the older cars on the circuit with new rookies coming in. Fee elaborated: " Think of where he'd be in his career now in real time. Following a defeat to Jackson Storm, Lightning enlists the help of a new trainee, Cruz Ramirez, a sleek female race car, to prepare him for the the Florida 500, in the hope that he can give a game-changing performance. In May 2016, Fee gave the first details regarding the plot: the film sees Lightning McQueen, now a veteran in the racing world, facing the rise of a new generation of race cars epitomized by Jackson Storm. Proving that #95 isn't through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing's biggest stage!

Okay but imagine a world where Cars 3 went like this.

- When we first meet Sterling and he seems nice, he lets Lightning know that when one day he does retire, he’ll have first pick as to who his replacement is. It’s already in the contract. Also, he knows “Jackson Storm wishes he had this model” because he used to be on the board for IGNTR.

- “...but if the Rusteze team and I beat everyone else, then I decide when I’m done.”

- Cruz acts out the story of her first race with diecasts at a roadside shop. But the one racer that really made her feel like crap, the one that made her doubt herself and leave the track, she can’t find a diecast for (so she uses a model of Chick). She remembers that racer’s words even now...”you can play dress up all you want, but you’ll never be one of us.” She also mentions that his whole team - even the sponsor - didn’t seem to like her either.

- In that brief clip of the RRC after Cruz leaves and Lightning’s alone, we see the rookies testing on the simulator and Sterling intently studying their numbers. Looking back at something else. Comparing.

- We actually see Storm acting coddled and entitled. We see interviews where he seems to view winning the 500 as inevitable because he has no idea what being challenged looks like. Or what things like drafting and sneaking through the window mean.

- Oh and also all the next gens have REAL SPOILERS BECAUSE I STILL WON’T LET THAT GO

- During the flashback with Doc’s letters, we get one more moment. It’s Lightning early in his career, about to settle a battle for the Piston Cup with Chick. In practice, Chick makes a dirty move that makes Lightning slip up and wounds his confidence a bit. He’s unable to gain more ground until Doc comes over the radio with some wisdom. Chick didn’t get into Lightning’s head, Lightning got into his, and he would never have made that move if Lightning didn’t scare him. Lightning comes back on race day and wins the Cup. (Granted, I don’t know how they could have done this in real life what with Paul Newman having passed on. Maybe Doc was away from the track that weekend and had to text him?)

- Lightning wins that last race with Cruz in Thomasville instead of losing, goes to Florida, and More Than New Paint basically happens (except for one crucial change, which I’ll get to in a second.) Sterling goes to Lightning and says the numbers the trainees are putting up at the testing center totally dwarf anything Lightning did on his trip and takes the 95 off him. But, being true to his word, he’s brought a few of those rookies to Florida and allows Lightning to pick his replacement from among them. We get that moment of all Lightning’s hyped-up friends shocked to find the number’s been ripped off him and Lightning saying “They quit on me,” and...

- ...that’s when Sterling finds Cruz in her race gear and barks at her to leave. Lightning hears this and gets the same idea he got during the race in the actual movie. He motions to the pitties who are still carrying that 95 decal, goes to Cruz, and selects her. Sterling objects, but Sally butts in with her “I’m his lawyer” moment - he said Lightning could pick, not that he had to pick from anywhere specific.

- We get that sequence where the crowd all chants for McQueen, Tex scoops him up and he rolls out with the 51 to even more fervent cheers. Because dangit, it’s too perfect, and it’s not like it would have come out of nowhere. Remember Tex’s “I’ll boot Cal off the team” bit? I’ll bet a hundred bucks that was first written specifically to set this up.

- On the pace laps, we get that “What, the girl in the costume?” scene with Jackson...and then he does a double take.

- A few laps into the race, someone comes over the radio to inform McQueen and Cruz that Sterling found a loophole too. Because Lightning said “if the Rusteze team and I beat everyone else”, he can only keep racing if he and Cruz finish first and second (or second and first).

- From there, we get a version of that proposed sequence where there’s a late wreck and McQueen gets tagged in a wreck - he gets to the line quick enough to hold a decent position, but he’s still not in good shape. There may have to be a red flag for the sake of staging and interaction with Smokey.

- McQueen rallies back, takes the lead from Storm with a few laps to go, and holds it comfortably. No one’s gonna stop him if this thing goes green to the finish. BUT...it’s still all up to Cruz, because she’s yet to get up to second.

- From there (except that the fight is for second and not first), we get the end of the 500 that we actually got. When Jackson pulls his stunt with Cruz, Sterling can’t help but mouth the words “you’ll never be one of us” in amusement, and Lightning instantly makes the connection. He hypes her up (a moment that now has more weight), and she beats Storm after successfully doing the flip.

- Tex makes the offer to buy Rust-eze on screen.

- McQueen’s happy in victory lane. Reporters are already asking him, now that he can keep racing, on what he expects for this coming season. But to everyone’s shock, he takes a short hiatus from racing to mentor Cruz.

Homebuilt Pro Street 1968 Camaro

There’s a first time for everything, like riding a bike or diving into the deep end. But just as you might skin a knee from a fall or cough up some pool water, it wasn’t all easy-peasy for Bren Manke working on his ’68 Camaro.

“This was the first car build I had ever done,” he admits. “I built the entire thing, including all the engine assembly, rollcage fabrication, suspension work, wiring, and just about everything else, in my two-car garage.”

Fortunately, Bren is mechanically inclined and had some previous experience working on snowmobiles with his dad, Bill. And he had one big motivation: to build this car with the sole intent of making it go really fast.

That’s a familiar line to Chevy High Performance readers. Making it happen is a whole ’nuther story, though. Fortunately, when he found the car on a Craigslist ad as a rolling chassis, it had very little rust. “But it was pretty much just a shell,” he admits.

While his idea initially was to build a Pro Touring car, his focus shifted after attending the NHRA Sonoma Nationals and watching some cool old drag cars tearing up the track. So he switched horses in midstream and went the Pro Street route instead.

“The only problem was that I had already mini-tubbed the car,” he notes. “So I got the absolute biggest tires I could fit into the wheelwells without doing fullsize tubs.” He also welded in some subframe connectors and bolted on Competition Engineering Slide-A-Link traction bars, secured to a 3.70 Ford 9-inch with Moser 33-spline forged axles. To further minimize axlewrap, Detroit Speed supplied 3-inch drop-leaf springs and shocks.

This setup was for putting some serious power to the pavement—about 750 horses at 15 psi from a 383 small-block topped with a Weiand 6-71 blower. All good in theory, but he encountered a few bumps in the road along the way. The first one happened while testing the engine right after he had gotten the Weiand blower installed.

“I went to my favorite testing spot and floored it,” he relates. “Well, the throttle linkage that hooked to the carburetor wasn’t adjusted right and got stuck against the side of the blower, keeping it at full throttle. I was getting really close to 140 mph when I shut the ignition off.” As a result, the engine backfired super hard, which in turn bent the crankshaft. He was able to limp it home and ended up pulling the engine and installing a new crank.

The next challenge was a more involved technical issue, as the engine ran too hot. After months of fighting overheating issues he determined the problem was caused by the blower being over-driven too much.

“I was achieving the boost levels I wanted, but the extra load during idle and cruising caused it to overheat.” And that was after trying all sorts of fixes, such as installing a huge radiator that barely fit between the framerails, adding water wetter, a high-flow 55-gpm electric water pump, and dual shrouded electric fans, plus adjusting the timing, changing the jetting—everything.

He eventually went with a Whipple W200R twin-screw supercharger instead, which has a bypass valve to bleed off boost at slow speeds. Even so, he replaced the plastic butterfly-style valve with a turbo blow-off unit. Why the switch? “Because of the aesthetics and the fact I can calibrate the amount of vacuum needed to open it by using different tension springs,” Bren explains.

Drawing on his snowmobile experience, he also designed a water-to-air intercooler to adapt it to his existing 6-71 intake. That involved drawing up several designs and fine-tuning through trial and error (just as he did on the rest of the project).

Assembled by Bren, with some help from his father, the innards of the engine provided by CNC Motorsports include Eagle forged rods and a crank with a 3.750-inch stroke in a 0.030-overbore of 4.030 inches, slinging JE forged pistons with an 8.8:1 compression ratio. AFR 220 heads run Scorpion 1.5:1 rockers. Filtering the air into a Pro Systems SV1 carb is a K&N element with a custom scoop.

Downstream from the block are Schoenfeld headers (1 7/8 to 1 3/4-inches), dumping into a 3-inch custom X-pipe and dual mufflers. Backing up the mill is a TCI Auto Turbo 350, actuated by a B&M shifter and fitted with a trans brake.

Another scary surprise came when Bren was trying out a new electric fuel pump. He had it operating for a while without having the car running. So how did things get a little weird?

“Well, unknown to me when I had installed the fittings on the pump, a small metal shaving made its way into the carburetor and kept the needle and seat open, flooding the motor extremely bad (like, hydraulic the motor bad),” he relates. Bren decided to pull the spark plugs and crank the motor to clear the gas out but forgot to unhook the coil.

“When I hit the key something sparked and ignited the gas that came out of the cylinders, and before I knew it I had three-foot flames shooting out of the engine bay,” he recalls with wince. Fortunately, he grabbed a fire extinguisher and put it out pretty fast—but not before it burned up the majority of the wiring around the engine.

“We also had a heck of a time getting the matte finish to come out right,” Bren admits. “We ended up spraying, sanding, and respraying the entire car because when the matte finish would begin to dry, random striping would appear, the worst of which were on the flat surfaces such as the roof and decklid.” That’s when he decided to go with the two-tone flat/matte finish.

Despite all the hurdles and hiccups, this build had a good ending, as he and his bride, Aggie, did a smoky burnout at their wedding reception. All told, after three years of overcoming various challenges, “This car was an absolute blast to build and one heck of a learning curve.”

And they lived happily ever after. CHP

He sulks for awhile because racing is his whole life and he doesn’t know what to do.  Then he realises ‘I decide when I’m done’ and he goes back out to go back to racing.  His sponsors tell him they’ve built a brand-new training facility in his name and he can go out there right now and get started again.

He goes to the racing facility and the guy who owns it, Sterling, is like a Lightning superfan.  He’s got dirt from all Lightning’s tracks and whatnot and he gives Lightning a trainer to help him learn the new methods racers are using.  The trainer is Cruz Ramirez, and one of her main methods is making him angry by insulting his age so he can ‘use that’ in his racing.  Lightning is insulted by like half of what she asks him to do and he just wants to use the fancy simulator he thinks is the reason his rival, Jackson Storm, is so fast.  But he crashes the simulator and then he has to have a meeting with Sterling.

Sterling reveals that his real intentions with having Lightning around is not to put him on the track at all; he actually just wants to sell a bunch of stuff with Lightning on it and have him endorse it.  But Lightning doesn’t want to be a brand, he wants to be a racer.  So he makes a deal: if he wins his next race, he gets to keep racing, but if he doesn’t, he’ll do what Sterling wants.

So Lightning thinks that if he follows Doc’s old methods, he’ll get faster.  He goes to find Doc’s old mentor and meets Doc’s old racing friends, but they don’t really know how to help him.  He takes Cruz to the beach and accidentally to a demolition derby, and he doesn’t get any faster but we’re shown that these methods are actually making HER better at driving.  They leave the demolition derby, which Cruz won by mistake, and she’s super happy about it and Lightning gets upset because she doesn’t understand what he’s going through and he feels like she’s making light of it.  So she tells Mack to stop and she starts leaving, but before she does she reveals she DOES know.

Cruz was part of a family that told her to ‘dream small, or not at all’.  She wanted to become a racer, but was always told that she couldn’t.  And she kept practicing anyway, but the day she got to her first race she felt like she didn’t belong there and left.  She asks Lightning, ‘when you got to your first race, how did you know you could do it?’ and he says, ‘I just never thought I couldn’t’.  This entire scene is actually based on Cruz’s voice actress and her real-life story about becoming a VA. 

So they separate and then Lightning ends up going back to get her (and he flips some of the things she did to make fun of him back on her and makes her realise maybe she was being insulting) and they go to the race, and Lightning moves pretty far up the field but he knows he isn’t going to win.  So he pulls into the pits and tells Ramone to spraypaint Cruz with the number 95 and put her in the race in his stead.  She argues about it and Sterling tries to send her back to the training center because she’s a trainer, not a racer, but Lightning is like no, she’s a racer, and he tells her he’s giving her a shot and she needs to take it.

She has trouble because she’s never been in a real-race before, let alone a high-stakes one, but Lightning starts giving her the advice she was giving him.  It didn’t help him, but it does help her, and Jackson tries to intimidate her but Lightning brings her back and she wins the race.

Sterling comes back and he’s all ‘oh I KNEW you could do it’ and he’s all ‘oh Lightning you’re my brand now’ but the race officials declare Cruz and Lightning BOTH the winners of the race, so Lightning doesn’t have to do the endorsement.  Then Tex Dinoco comes along to poach Cruz, since she’s not signed to a racing team, and then goes off to have a talk with Sterling.

Cruz gets signed to Dinoco, and Tex buys Rust-Eze so Sterling can’t ruin the legacy of the 95 with marketing, and he and Cruz have a race at Willy’s Butte (I think) and Lightning is all painted up like Doc Hudson and he takes on the role Doc used to be in for him and presumably Cruz goes on to win her own gazillion Piston Cups.

That’s the plot of Cars 3, which is about passing the torch, how to keep doing what you love even if it seems out of your reach, bridging gaps between generations, and people just genuinely caring for each other.
