Kingdom Hearts IV predictions: Radiator Springs/Dinoco Rust-eze Racing Center/Fireball Beach/Thunder Hollow/Thomasville/Florida International Speedway (Cars)

Takes place after Cars 3.

Is visited by Sora, who enters the world as a 2017 Nissan 370Z before visits to Luigi’s Casa Della Tires and Ramone’s House of Body Art end with him modified into a next-gen race car sponsored by Dinoco (with Tex’s blessing) and with Cruz’s number.

It isn’t combat based. Missions include keeping up with McQueen’s top speed by racing down Radiator Springs’ main street, learning how to turn right to go left at Willy’s Butte, driving backwards with Mater, keeping up with Cruz’s top speed on Fireball Beach, avoiding pushy competitors with the Thunder Hollow challengers, and practicing with Cruz at Thomasville, culminating in the Piston Cup race at Florida International Speedway, where the objective is to win against Jackson Storm.

It’s set during Cruz’s first Piston Cup racing season, so McQueen still has Doc’s colors and spends the Florida race as Sora’s crew chief. Also, Ramone wears his “Saludos Amigos” body paint from the epilogue of Cars 3.

As Sora finishes his story, Mater is certainly unhappy with Xehanort’s actions forcing Sora’s hand. “That dad-gum Xehanort”, he says angrily. Extra points if Sora doesn’t get to the part where Xehanort is dead, then Sarge gets in his face and demands him to teach Xehanort a lesson when he gets back in a militaristic manner. “Is that understood,” Sarge yells. Then Sora tries to correct him, but gets cut off and asked again, “Is that understood,” and has to respond, “Sir, yes, sir!”

Of course, during the top speed races, Luigi is the one to signal the race to begin. In the Radiator Springs race, Sora’s top speed is tracked by Sheriff’s speed radar, and on Fireball Beach, it’s via Cruz’s personal assistant, Hamilton.

If you fail the “Turn Right to go Left” mission, Sora goes flying into the bed of cacti, and Mater fishes him out.

Cars 2 elements will be here. Heck, maybe Mater can’t be present most for the training because he’s busy with Finn and Holley. After all, does he still owe Holley a first date?

I wanted the player character in this world to be Kairi just so Storm can feel the embarrassment of losing to not one, but two “costume girls”.

The Piston Cup race is announced as a 500-lap race, but no game developer is that malicious to force the player to race 500 laps around an oval, so they’d take after the first Cars game and make it twelve laps with the sun slowly lowering throughout the race.

The context: he’s temporarily taking Cruz’s place during the 2017 Piston Cup racing season (hence why McQueen still has Doc’s colors from the Cars 3 epilogue), and needs to train to do so. From matching McQueen’s top speed by racing down Radiator Springs’ main street (signaled by Luigi and tracked with Sheriff’s radar), to learning how to turn right to go left at Willy’s Butte, to keeping up with Cruz’s top speed on Fireball Beach (again signaled by Luigi and tracked by Hamilton), to avoiding pushy competitors at Thunder Hollow, and practicing with Cruz at Thomasville. This culminates in the Piston Cup race at Florida International Speedway, where the objective is to win against Jackson Storm.

Fun fact: I, for a while, wanted the player character to be Kairi because, imagine this. “I lost to one costume girl, but I’m not gonna lose to two,” Storm says before he loses to Kairi, another “costume girl”.

I know I’m being an insufferable worldbuilding nerd here, but my basic metric for evaluating media with very inhuman protagonists is “how easily can one offer a complete and coherent account of this media’s plot without ever mentioning the fact that the protagonist is, for example, a talking car?”. The harder it is, the higher it scores.

Danny Swerves (he/him) is the next gen Piston Cup Racer for Octogain. He doesn't have much to say but if he does, it's usually a sentence. Growing up from a small town in Mexico, Danny started racing at a young age and took it as a career. Once you get to know him, he is a jokester and loves pulling pranks on his fellow competitors.

Cruz Ramirez (she/they) was former trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center and now holds the sponsor of Dinoco wearing the number 51! She grew up watching Lightning McQueen and tried pursuing a career in racing. It wasn't until her idol gave her the chance and confidence to make her dreams come true! Cruz's is very outgoing and tries to bring out the best in others, especially a certain racecar she knows.

HELLO. I'm curious, what do you think Luigi and Guido were doing during the course of Lightning's training at the Florida Rust-eze Center? Would they have been going through training of their own as pitties?

Given how short-lived the Training Center portion of LMQ's training was, I feel like they probably didn't get up to much, alas. They spend the Fireball Beach portion just supporting Lightning, rather than doing their own training, after all. But maybe Luigi did some research about tire pressures.

Somewhere on this godforsaken website, I have a post about my theories on what precipitated Lightning's crash. I don't think Tumblr's search function will do my the favor of ever finding it again, but something that happens with some frequency in NASCAR are wrecks/cautions brought on by blown tires.

Sometimes this is about wear, or debris, or defect, but a lot of the time it's about air pressure. Teams will start with a low tire pressure, because (and this is probably oversimplified) low pressure = bigger contact patch with the track = more grip = ability to go faster without losing the car. Go too fast with flabby tires or try to get too much out of them before they're up to temp, and you can eat them up. In Cars 3, we get a shot of LMQ's tire and its flexing sidewall before it blows, so I could see Luigi as "tire chief" running some numbers with regard to that.

Something that I wonder about is why Guido had any tire changer partner. We know he's fast--wickedly fast, given that he's keeping pace with teams with 4 tire changers, and he's just 1--but he can still only do 1 tire at a time. Adding additional tire changers would shave statistically significant time off LMQ's pit times, almost without a doubt. There are HUGE gains to be made here, and tbh it's a failing of the Rusteze Racing Team if they never explored this, or didn't think to. I think it would definitely take training and practice to find that rhythm, and in all likelihood the stops would be slower before they got faster. But if Cars were about Guido as the main character, I think that'd be his arc. Learning how to stop being a "one-man show!" and work with others. ;)

The Plunge

Deertrail Resort. The site was once the beginnings of an ambitious cliffside getaway, now reduced to a small maze of graffiti-clad masonry. Ez trailed their fingers across a spray-painted mural of a person falling against a vibrant blue background, overlaid with various artist’s tags. Above them, the birds sang against a perfect, clear sky.

It could’ve been peaceful.

At the edge of the ruins, a stone chimney stood upon a curved platform. Cut into the center of the platform was a spiral staircase, descending into the ground. Ez took a breath and began to climb down, down, down. The sunlight and moss gave way to damp concrete, and they found themself at the end of a long, dark hall.

An old feeling seized their chest- a sort of heaviness against their lungs. As their heart heaved, fast and steady, they crept onwards. The hall opened into a large, dark cavity- aged metal walkways suspended over what appeared to be an expanse of inky water. Ez could make out something at the other end, across the catwalk. They approached, carefully. It was casket shaped, with wires blooming from the ends. Ez’s eyes followed the wires up to a panel of small, dim lights built into the wall that winked in the darkness like stars. As they got closer, they could make out dials amidst the lights. Below, beneath the glare of the lights, the casket-like chamber sat. It was transparent, they realized. They touched their hand to the glass.

Within, a sudden shifting jostled them from their contemplation. Their heart raced as their mind sluggishly pieced together what they were looking at.

Reine Fisk, her eyes wide and bleary and furious.

They jumped back. The woman’s fist clunked against the inside of the glass once, then twice, sending webs of cracks across it.

Ez began to run. The chamber shattered. The metal grate of the catwalk creaked and groaned as they bolted across- they were almost across. Their heart hammered against their chest.

A thick hand wrapped around their ankle, forcing them to the ground with a painful thud. The air rushed from their lungs as Queenpin lifted them up, effortlessly. They thrashed vainly against her crushing grip. In one swift movement, she had thrown them clear of the rusted railing.

They were falling.

The dark water rippled below.

Falling. Falling, the jolt of fear that pulls you from sleep. Falling, Alice down the rabbit hole. Falling into another place. Another world.

Falling awake.

The water rushed around them, filling their senses.

Easy does it, a voice inside them whispered. To the surface.

Upwards. Ez breached the water, and gasped the frigid air.

Ground beneath their feet.

Okay but imagine a world where Cars 3 went like this.

- When we first meet Sterling and he seems nice, he lets Lightning know that when one day he does retire, he’ll have first pick as to who his replacement is. It’s already in the contract. Also, he knows “Jackson Storm wishes he had this model” because he used to be on the board for IGNTR.

- “...but if the Rusteze team and I beat everyone else, then I decide when I’m done.”

- Cruz acts out the story of her first race with diecasts at a roadside shop. But the one racer that really made her feel like crap, the one that made her doubt herself and leave the track, she can’t find a diecast for (so she uses a model of Chick). She remembers that racer’s words even now...”you can play dress up all you want, but you’ll never be one of us.” She also mentions that his whole team - even the sponsor - didn’t seem to like her either.

- In that brief clip of the RRC after Cruz leaves and Lightning’s alone, we see the rookies testing on the simulator and Sterling intently studying their numbers. Looking back at something else. Comparing.

- We actually see Storm acting coddled and entitled. We see interviews where he seems to view winning the 500 as inevitable because he has no idea what being challenged looks like. Or what things like drafting and sneaking through the window mean.

Chick didn’t get into Lightning’s head, Lightning got into his, and he would never have made that move if Lightning didn’t scare him. Lightning comes back on race day and wins the Cup. (Granted, I don’t know how they could have done this in real life what with Paul Newman having passed on. Maybe Doc was away from the track that weekend and had to text him?)

- Lightning wins that last race with Cruz in Thomasville instead of losing, goes to Florida, and More Than New Paint basically happens (except for one crucial change, which I’ll get to in a second.) Sterling goes to Lightning and says the numbers the trainees are putting up at the testing center totally dwarf anything Lightning did on his trip and takes the 95 off him. But, being true to his word, he’s brought a few of those rookies to Florida and allows Lightning to pick his replacement from among them. We get that moment of all Lightning’s hyped-up friends shocked to find the number’s been ripped off him and Lightning saying “They quit on me,” and...

- ...that’s when Sterling finds Cruz in her race gear and barks at her to leave. Lightning hears this and gets the same idea he got during the race in the actual movie. He motions to the pitties who are still carrying that 95 decal, goes to Cruz, and selects her. Sterling objects, but Sally butts in with her “I’m his lawyer” moment - he said Lightning could pick, not that he had to pick from anywhere specific.

- We get that sequence where the crowd all chants for McQueen, Tex scoops him up and he rolls out with the 51 to even more fervent cheers. Because dangit, it’s too perfect, and it’s not like it would have come out of nowhere. Remember Tex’s “I’ll boot Cal off the team” bit? I’ll bet a hundred bucks that was first written specifically to set this up.

- On the pace laps, we get that “What, the girl in the costume?” scene with Jackson...and then he does a double take.

- A few laps into the race, someone comes over the radio to inform McQueen and Cruz that Sterling found a loophole too. Because Lightning said “if the Rusteze team and I beat everyone else”, he can only keep racing if he and Cruz finish first and second (or second and first).

- From there, we get a version of that proposed sequence where there’s a late wreck and McQueen gets tagged in a wreck - he gets to the line quick enough to hold a decent position, but he’s still not in good shape. There may have to be a red flag for the sake of staging and interaction with Smokey.

- McQueen rallies back, takes the lead from Storm with a few laps to go, and holds it comfortably. No one’s gonna stop him if this thing goes green to the finish. BUT...it’s still all up to Cruz, because she’s yet to get up to second.

- From there (except that the fight is for second and not first), we get the end of the 500 that we actually got. When Jackson pulls his stunt with Cruz, Sterling can’t help but mouth the words “you’ll never be one of us” in amusement, and Lightning instantly makes the connection. He hypes her up (a moment that now has more weight), and she beats Storm after successfully doing the flip.

- Tex makes the offer to buy Rust-eze on screen.

- McQueen’s happy in victory lane. Reporters are already asking him, now that he can keep racing, on what he expects for this coming season. But to everyone’s shock, he takes a short hiatus from racing to mentor Cruz.

After Lightning accidentally destroys a simulator, Sterling then tells Lightning in his office that his racing days are ending, and that in order to provide Sterling with revenue, he will be selling legacy merchandise instead. On the last lap of the final race of the season, Lightning has the lead, but Storm, Danny Swervez and Chase Racelott catches up and overtakes him. After a few more races, most of the other veterans (including Bobby and Cal) have either retired or dismissed by their sponsors to make way for the Next Gens. One day, a rookie named Jackson Storm, who is part of a new generation of race cars who use the latest technology to run faster than veteran racers, comes from nowhere and beats him. Mater leaves and Lightning soon races with his rivals Bobby Swift and Cal Weathers. Lightning then asks Mater to give him some quiet.
