Depiction of The Ardent One, a god of centipedes, fire and artistry in a friend‘s setting
design breakdown below the cut
reblogs appreciated!
So, the Ardent One is the centipede god of magical technology, craftsmanship and art, blacksmithing especially and fire. I wanted to illustrate him for my girlfriends future Pc in the setting, Esophorous, who follows the god. The little human at the bottom of the illustration is him.
Here is all the symbols the ardent one wields, and what they represent:
The things he is holding, from upper left following along the body down to the upper right + what they represent!
Sigil - Enchantment
Fire - General symbol of his
Crystal ball - Divination
Knitting needles - Knitting
Pencil - Drawing/Writing
Chisel - Stonemasonry
Compass - Architecture, Astronomy and Navigation
Mask - Theatre, general symbol, Maskmaking
Runestone (depicting Dagaz, which stands for light and potential) - Runemagic
Jewel - Jewelmaking, Magiccrafting
Gears - Machinery construction
Vial of Ink/Blood - Calligraphy, pun on my username, Alchemy
Needle with Thread - Sewing, Embroidery
Awl - Bookbinding, Leatherworking, etc
Hammer - smithing
Gavotte - Pottery
Yarn - Crocheting and Textiles
Stamp - Stampmaking, Lawmakers
Book - Literature, Bookbinding, Spellcasting
Tanning knife - Tanning
Spoon with Hole - Gluemaking, Paintmixing
Nail - Carpentry, Construction
Curved knife - Glassworking
Shuttle with thread - Weaving
Lense - Lensemaking, Optometry, Artificery
Also, the symbols on his spine are greek letters. They spell out (top to bottom) the words:
„Tekhne“ - Craft, Creation
„Poieo“ - To do, to make, to create
„Pyre“ - Fire
„Theos“ - God, Divinity
„Pneuma“ - breath/life/soul

More art commissioned from the amazing @linnpuzzle 💖💖💖 This is Yrsa, the best friend and love interest of the rå/huldra Aster from the previous art commission. Yrsa is a human runewitch, channeling her magic through writing as her focus. Her mother is a skyship merchant and her father is her mentor in magic. PS. There are runewitches, runemages, songwitches and songmages. Yes, I love making overly complicated social systems and magic systems~

Is it true that moonshadow elves are partial to dancing?
If so, what do you think of all the different styles of dance we humans have?
Cause like......there are a lot😅😂
Dancing is a vital part of Moonshadow culture, inbuilt as one of the most common ways we interact with our magic. Runes made large can be danced upon to evoke their spells. And it keeps us in time and balance, both elements vital to communing with the Moon in its cycle. It's only natural that the enjoyable practice quickly spread from our runemages to become a common cultural and social staple.
Often, it is the only thing that can get me to go to a gathering - the prospect of dancing there with my husband. He does know how to lure me out.
Mages, amirite? There's just something about them. Mostly infuriating, mind you, but irresistibly charming as well.
As for human dances, I have seen several kinds, from afar. I would be partial to any dance that let Ethari hold me and spin me around. Do you have those?
#ask runaan#runaan answers#dancing#is very nice with a skilled partner who knows exactly how you like your spins#the faster the better really#my hair deserves it

That Was Dave
CW: Death
On the drive over to the funeral Sherri and I went back through all of Dave’s characters we could remember. His Engineer in Star Trek Adventures, his sorcerer in 13th Age, his Hound in Blades in the Dark, his Gearhead in Mutant Year Zero, Roaming Wolf from Mutants & Masterminds, Master Mummer Sokka Sokka from Libri Vidicos, his Skaven from Arcane Rails, his Runemage from Rolemaster, Lat and Na from the parallel GURPS Fantasy games…
A few others we couldn’t recall the details of like his character from Guards of Abashan, the name of his weird mage from Triad, his characters from the one time I ran D&D, and his earliest characters from various Cyberpunk 2020, Hunter, and Vampire campaigns. He had a type– always a little weird and off-kilter, often with clear vulnerabilities. His weirdo characters could be unpredictable but they never, ever caused pain or discomfort to the rest of the group, to the players at the table. I’ve played with too many folks who made their eccentricities everyone’s problem. But Dave never did that
I met Dave in 1992 or 1993. He was in high school. At the time I helped manage a game store with an attached upstairs game room. He hung around, quiet, in a thin black trenchcoat (as was the style at the time). He had a couple of annoying pals who also hung around– Dave was the best of them. He got involved in Warhammer 40K, started playing ttrpgs, very occasionally played TCGs, and became a regular fixture. When I moved on from there in 1997, he stayed part of the group. I played with him pretty solidly for almost the next twenty-seven years.
Dave had been born in 1976– so seven years younger than me. That was enough to put a fairly major generation gap between us in terms of how he’d been raised and what he’s been exposed to. He grew up on Nintendo. When I finally went to play the PS version of Final Fantasy VI, he photocopied an entire NES FFIII strategy guide to help me through it. He loved that game.
I’m not sure entirely what else he loved– like media, games, movies. He was quiet and rarely gave out his opinions on things unless he felt strongly about them. He loved the Fallout series, he hated the Fist of the North Star action game I lent him, he loved Rock Band except when they decided not to have keyboards support anymore. If you suggested things to him he’d nod. Occasionally he’d get back to you that he’d tried them. But he remained quiet, kept to himself, and yet always managed to be a solid, fun and warm presence at every gaming table.
I have been extraordinary lucky to have a stable gaming group for three+ decades now. I have folks in my extended circles who I’ve played with since 1988. Most I’ve played with for several decades. One I knew in Middle School. The group has changed and shifted– I used to run 2-3 face to face games. Now that’s just one. There are two parallel games with different mixes of people from this connected group, but I’m not part of those. I thought about that today when I saw someone post this from https://www.instagram.com/couldbeworsecomic/ , with comments about the unreality of this…
Dave passed away on Father’s Day. There’s a story there but let me circle around to get to that.
In thinking about it, one of my biggest regrets was not sitting down and asking Dave how he thought my GMing had evolved and changed. Sherri’s been along for me on this ride, but she’s been privy to all the behind-the-scenes and helped shape my approach. I wish I’d asked him what he thought the differences were and how he liked or didn’t like them. He was a good GM. I twice played in campaigns he ran: a GURPS Fantasy one and a hack of Fallout using the Action Cards system I’d created. He did striking and unique things with that.
It always struck me how long he thought and planned for his campaigns. For both he’d clearly worked on them for years before he ever suggested he wanted to run. He came to the table with props, new options, and great ideas. He’d done his world building– but it never felt closed off. Like the best GMs, he invited you to both tour and shape the worlds he’d built. It felt like a far cry from me who has been running tons of off the cuff short campaigns over the last several years.
Though that’s been an online phenomena. In our face to face groups, we’ve mostly focused on longer campaigns. Even short ones have a dozen sessions. So many of the campaigns of mine which Dave played in lasted for years and years. We got to see the characters change, grow, and evolve. I mentioned he would run oddballs– often the character type with the least growth. But his characters always grew and became something better.
He grew and became something better. In the mid-00’s his wife Chas joined the table. She was and is great: solid and determined. One of those players who makes a choice and lives with it. The two of them together always made things even more fun.
So I don’t know the full details, but apparently within the last year Dave started to have some mood and personality swings. I only saw him and Chas bi-weekly for our sessions. I didn’t notice anything. But it was serious enough to warrant a separation between the two of them. Again, I didn’t have a real sense of what was happening there. But then Dave passed out in his home and had to go to the ER. He was diabetic so I and others assumed that was a contributing factor when he was released the next day.
But then a week or so later he had another episode, being again sent to the hospital– this time with seizures. They kept him in for several days of treatment, but again they weren’t sure what was happening. I’m assuming they gave him some meds for that before releasing him again. Less than a week after that, on Father’s Day, he passed out in his bathroom and hit his head, as I understand it. And he died. A wellness check a day later found him.
After the funeral, Sherri and I again went through the list of his characters, their personalities, and their stories. I remembered when another person from our playgroup died, Barry, back in 2006 at the age of 37. Not long after that I ran a D&D 3.5 campaign which had a sub-story about the PCs rescuing Barry’s character who had sacrificed himself closing a demonic portal at the end of the campaign only a few months previously. That campaign had a riff on Final Fantasy VI, Dave’s favorite video game.
I’m not sure I can do anything like that for Dave, can do anything like that again. I’m older and the last few years have made me more raw, more easily broken. I’m not sure I can face that pain. I’ve tabled the Star Trek Adventures campaign we’d been in the middle of. I hope we can keep playing, but I don’t think I can run STA, with Dave haunting the table. We will see.
I don’t have a big conclusion here: maybe keep an eye on your mental health and tell folks when things are getting rocky. But I wanted to write something down. I hunted around for photos of Dave, but I’ve never been a person to take pictures. The images throughout have been from the table and it took me a long time, but I found one.
That’s Dave there in the middle, hand on mouth, contemplating his next action.
I hope there’s something after we die and, if there is, I get a chance to talk to Dave again.

LoZ - Shadowfolk Fighting Styles
The Sheikah (精カ) generally have their own unique style different from all other races in Hyrule. Also, keep in mind that here, in my hc, Shei is spelt more like the real world Sei, but with the Tsuki part of the compound being more pronounced; as such here it means Moon a/o Spirit.
Their styles of fighting are especially unique.
They, as a tribe, have developed an original style of spellwork, specifically runemagy, & swordfighting to reflect their roles within the kingdom.
Their spellwork is referred to as Sheijutsu (精術, Moon or Spirit Method) which is most like Naruto's Ninjutsu & Genjutsu. It, likewise, involves the use of special signs known as Jūyonji-In (十四字印, 14 Hand Seals). It is very similar to the Yiga style of sorcery, but instead of red, the color tends to be more blue or purple. And, they have a variety of techniques available for use. Such as techniques inspired by Shadow Arts, Returning Weapon, Steps of the Brave, & Midnight Shroud from DnD. As well as what is basically the Kage Bunshin no Jutsu & Kawarimi no Jutsu from Naruto. There are also a couple of stealth-based Sheijutsu inspired by Shadow Step & Cloak of Shadows from DnD.
Their runemagic style is called Fūinjutsu (封印術, Sealing Method) which typically involves the creation of charms & tags called Fuda (札, Note) that have spells infused in them via ink, brushes, & calligraphy using the Sheikah writing system. - Again, taking inspiration from Naruto here.
There is actually an ancient style of Fūinjutsu that has been lost by the time of even TotK's past, called Sheishin Fūinjutsu (精神封印術, Spirit Sealing Technique).
Originally taught to the Sheikah by Sheikaku, a long forgotten god of death, spirits, & the moon, who was the deity who created the Sheikah. (Which you can see Sheishin Fūinjutsu featured on both the Depths Set & the Dark Clumps in TotK.)
Sheishin Fūinjutsu is specifically made for the purpose of forging special weapons meant to "kill" Poes, other undead monsters, & even Akuma. Meaning evil beings possessed by On'nen. This is done by engraving the runes into the metal. There's more to the process, but for now, that's enough.
It does this by diffusing or subduing the Malice or On'nen (怨念, a mix of hatred, grudement, malice, jealousy, vengeance, a/o resentfulness that can consume spirits, whether alive or dead, & make them furious or malicious & evil spirits even more so) that fuels them.
You see, when a Poe Soul (the non-combative Poes you find in the Depths of TotK) gains too many potent negative emotions or On'nen, that On'nen will turn into On'nenmaryoku (怨念魔力, magic fueled by malicious intent) or simply Shōki (気, Miasma) & will rise from the Depths & manifest a body of pseudo-flesh made out of pure evil magic or Malice. That's what the Dark Clumps are. And those strips of paper on them are sealing tags using Sheishin Fūinjutsu to keep the flesh from reconstituting into another problem.
Now, something else important to the forging of these weapons is Mourniron, which is a type of iron only found deep underground, beneath where fierce battles have taken place.
This iron is then made into Allaysteel.
Which, at one point, was used by the Sheikah to make the above-mentioned weapons that would help them in laying restless souls to rest. The practice of creating it has long since been forgotten by the time of Wild's Era.
Which is partly why there were so many Poe Souls in the Depths. Wild was the first to begin ferrying them to the Bargainer's Statues in around 15,000 years. It is effective against Poes, Undead, & other such enemies.
Again, there are more steps before these weapons become effective at their intended job. However, I won't be talking about that now.
---
Anyway, their swordfighting style is known as Kenjutsu (剣術, Sword Method).
Two such components of Kenjutsu being Iaidō & Yadome no Jutsu.
Iaidō (居合道, Art of Resistance) is the art of being aware of your surroundings & capable of instantly responding to surprise attacks. It is focused on swift & efficient movements when drawing your sword, cutting your opponent, flicking blood from the blade, & returning it to the scabbard. Though, Bokken (木剣, Wooden Sword) are generally only used by beginners, while Iaitō (居合刀, Resistance Sword) are used by Sheikah still in training as they are blunt-edged swords. For the most part, Shinken (真剣, Serious Sword) are preferred by the fully trained. - Practitioners of Iaidō are referred to as Iaidō-Ka (居合道家).
Yadome no Jutsu (やどめの術, Stopping Method) is the military study of arrow-cutting or blocking. Considered a somewhat legendary skill that allows warriors to defend themselves from arrows by either cutting them from the air of deflecting them.
There are also techniques that emulate Flurry Strike, Extra Attack, & Opportunist from DnD, with further training depending on specialization.
There's also Shinjun Tanren (浸潤鍛練, Infiltration Martial Training) which eventually let's Sheikah perform what amounts to Infiltration Expertise, Acculturate, & Imposter from DnD.
Then, there's Kaihi Tanren (回避鍛練, Evasion or Avoidance Martial Training) which trains the body in things like Uncanny Dodge, Evasion, & Elusive, again, from DnD. (I'm taking a lot of inspiration from a 5e homebrew for a Ninja class, here.)
---
There is also Kiridō (斬道, Cutting Art), the art of the knife. Which is broken down into 2 branches: Kirijutsu & Santoku. Which are 2 different types of knife styles.
Kiridō being the overall use of knives.
Kirijutsu (斬術, Cutting Method) specifically being the martial or self-defensive use of knives & is easily adapted to the use of sickles. Meanwhile Santoku refers specifically to the use of the knife in the kitchen.
Santoku (三徳, Three Virtues or Uses) refers to the 3 uses for kitchen knives: slicing, dicing, & mincing.
While one can learn Santoku separately from Kirijutsu if they so desire, it is thought in Sheikah culture that in order to get the full understanding of all that a Hōchō (包丁, Kitchen Knife) is capable of, one must also know how to defend oneself with that hocho. Which, while Hōchō are not designed with the thought of fighting specifically in mind, they are designed to be able to be used in such a way & be effective at it if necessary. This is due to it being said in Sheikah culture that the best knifefighters know how to use a Kiri to cook just as easily as to fight & vice versa.
As a result, the best Sheikah chefs are also skilled in knifefighting.
Hōchō come in a variety of styles.
Including, but is not limited to Gyuto-Bōchō (Beef or Chef's Knife), Yanagiba-Bōchō (Sashimi or Sushi Knife) & Kiritsuke-Bōchō (Executive Chef Sashimi Knife), Santoku-Bōchō (3 Virtues or Multipurpose Knife), Sujihiki-Bōchō (Slicer, Carving, or Meat Knife), Nami-Bōchō (Bread or Cake Knife), Kikusumi-Bōchō (Petty, Utility, or Fine-Detail Paring/Peeling Knife), Honekotsu-Vōchō (Boning Knife), Usuba-Bōchō (Vegetable Knife) & Nakiri-Bōchō (Home-use Vegetable Knife), & Chuka-Bōchō (Cleaver).
While each design has its uses, the Gyuto-Bōchō is considered the most versatile as it is able to dice veggies, slice meat, smash garlic, & chop herbs & nuts. It is most often used to prepare non-Sheikah dishes & can often replace most any non-Sheikah kitchen knife.
The Santoku-Bōchō is likewise very useful as it is used for the 3 virtues of kitchen knives: slicing, dicing, & mincing. It is perfect for slicing, dicing, & mincing fruit, vegetables, fish, & boneless meat. It is thought to be able to accomplish just about anything a non-Sheikah kitchen knife can. It is considered a multipurpose Home Chef knife.
Honekotsu-Bōchō is an all-around meat, fish, & boning knife that can be used for anything from delicate filleting & detailed boning, to larger cuts of meat, & even heavy boning depending on the sharpness. It can specifically be unsharpened for heavy work or sharpened for fine detail work. (In terms of meta-narrative, Honekotsu-Bōchō are sort of a fusion between the real world Honesuki-Bōchō & Hankotsu-Bōchō.)
Anyway, when knives are worn or become broken, they are not merely disposed of as, much like any tool & especially swords, the Sheikah believe that over the years of use that knives become inhabited by spirits. When this happens, it's thought that the Knife becomes a very personal part of the chef & an extention of themselves.
As such, just like with swords, knives are often given burial places, or Hōchō-Zuka (包丁塚, Kitchen Knife Mound).
These Hōchō-Zuka monuments are often used to pray for improved Knife & cooking skills.
It is partially due to this reverence that the Sheikah are well-known for having the least wasteful kitchens in Hyrule. As they have a culture of diligent tool maintenance. Meaning resharpening blades, replacing handles, & reviving knives & swords many times over.
As a result, Sheikah blades, both knives & swords, tend to last for lifetimes.
A knife block was a Hōchō-Kaku (包丁角, Kitchen Knife Square), but the knife set itself, especially if it was fully stocked with everything a chef needs, was referred to as a Kamado Nakama (かまど仲間, Oven Companion) as the Sheikah refer to their kitchen as Kamado.
(Much of this is based on actual Japanese concepts.)
Hōchō-Kaku & Kamado Nakama generally come in 2 types: Katei-Yō (家庭用, Home) & Mamena (まめな, Diligent). As you can likely guess, one is for home-use & one is for professional-use.
Interestingly enough, it is a tradition for a woman's first Hōchō-Kaku to be gifted to her by her husband for their first house together. Generally, those tend to be Katei-Yō unless the man is either marrying a chef or is a chef himself.
---
The hand signs that they use to form their Sheijutsu are different from Silent Shadow Hand (SSH), also called Sheikah or Seeker Shadow Hand. Which is a type of sign language that the Sheikah use on missions when they need to remain silent.
What the Sheikah use to form Sheijutsu instead are Jūyonji-in (十四字印, 14 Hand Seals) or, colloquially/casually, Kōkan (交換, Exchange).
These are crafted after the 14 animals in the Sheikah Zodiac: Ryū (竜, Dragon), Ōkami (狼, Wolf), Nezumi (鼠, Rat), Ushi (牛, Steer), Tora (虎, Tiger), Usagi (兎, Rabbit), Hebi (蛇, Snake), Uma (馬, Horse), Hitsuji (羊, Sheep), Saru (猿, Monkey), Tori (鳥, Bird), Inoshishi (猪, Boar), Neko (猫, Cat), & Kitsune (狐, Fox).

ok my real rook Olita
She is the daughter of Stolas and the Dwarf-Elf Runemage. He made her before the Inquisition and here she is most likely a teenager. Perhaps he will become a reaper. Her father considers her a mistake, just as she does not love him, because her mother died during childbirth due to the magical power of the elf. She was raised by Inquisitor Ataro Orphelin and Sera, so it's no surprise that she's a lesbian. She accepted the faith of Vallaslin Elgarnan, hoping that he would help her take revenge. Yes, she made vallaslin herself since she was not a Dalish.
Her name dwarven and mean "fortune", but she not really lucky

KE Golden is interested in the rune magic. He emphasizes that Blue Moon snack when they’re alone, in private. And tells them that real friends will get over the shock if they do find out, and stick around anyways.
Kidclipse just tumbles down with a yelp and sleepily whines in protest at suddenly being woken. Moom quickly scoops him up and roxks him back to sleep. And then gently grabs one of Blue Moon’s fingers, trying for soft reassurances again.
Blue Moon will explain RuneMagic if he asks. Although he isn't going to use it much. He scared kidclipse with it. They don't want to scare anyone else.
Blue Moon figures he cans do it in private. He still doesn't quite believe that they won't run away though. Plus if he needs to hunt it's a different scenario.
Blue Moon focuses in on kidclipse. Relaxing a little bit as he processes where he is. Flinching when Moom grabs his finger. Intensely looking and listening. Settling back down as they relax fully. Apologizing for giving him such a scare.
