Kentucky Derby 2024 (Full Race)
Mystik Dan Wins in a Dramatic Photo Finish at 150th Kentucky Derby
Mystik Dan has won the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby in a dramatic photo finish at Churchill Downs on Saturday in Louisville.
Photo finishes are rare at the Derby
Entering the race at 18-1 odds, Mystik Dan edged out Sierra Leone and Forever Young in a dramatic three-horse photo finish to capture the first leg of the Triple Crown. Sierra Leone finished in second place, while Forever Young finished in third place.
It was the 10th time in the race’s history a horse has won by a nose and the first since Grindstone in 1996, according to the NBC broadcast.
“This is unbelievable. That was longest few minutes I’ve ever felt in my life waiting for them to hang that number above us,” said jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. after the race.
“It was exciting when we hit the wire but I wasn’t sure if we won so it was quite a rush to sit here and wait for it.”
The victory is the first for Hernandez Jr. and trainer Kenny McPeek at the Kentucky Derby.

Happy Star Wars Day and Derby Day! May the Fourth be with all the fine young padawans racing today! 💥🏇
This year's Derby field is a big one, with a full 20 horses! Our picks are Fierceness (the favorite) and Chasing Freedom, but we will also be keeping an eye on Just Steel (who will be ridden by the son of Track Phantom's trainer!) and Forever Young, Japan's best shot yet for the Derby. And of course, we can't help rooting for West Saratoga, the only gray in this year's field and the first Derby contestant for cancer-battling trainer Larry Demeritte! 🐎
Now if I can just figure out how to turn on my lightsaber, can we have a lightsaber joust after the Derby? ⭐️⚔️🏇🤔

Derby Pie (Sort-of)
When Ed was growing up, it was a tradition in his family to watch the Kentucky Derby. One year he told his grandpa that a particular horse was a “sure thing.”
It wasn’t.
Lessons learned.
We watched the Derby as a family when our kids were young and then, one year, miracle of miracles! We went to the Kentucky Derby for real!
I placed a small bet on what I thought was a “sure thing.”
It was! I won!
I was elated and bought mint juleps for the people we were with.
Never again! Don’t waste my time adding sugar and mint to Bourbon.
And we had Derby Pie, which is a sweet confection with loads of sugar and chocolate and pecans too.
I’ve made my own versions over the years — I can’t have pecans in the house because of allergies so I use almonds or cashews. But pecans taste better and have the best texture for the pie.
So here, for all of you who will watch on Saturday (and even if you don’t) is my latest recipe for Derby Pie (which apparently is a trademarked title so I changed the name a bit to Derby Pie (Sort-of).
DERBY PIE (SORT-OF)
1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
6 tablespoons butter
6 ounces chopped semisweet chocolate
3 large eggs
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons Bourbon
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cups chopped pecans
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Prick the bottom of the crust with the tines of a fork, cover with aluminum foil, including the edges, and weight the foil with baking pellets or dried beans. Bake the crust for 10 minutes. Remove the foil and weights, return the crust to the oven and bake for another 5 minutes. Remove the crust from the oven and set it aside. Lower the heat to 350 degrees. Melt the butter with the chocolate over low heat, stir to blend them thoroughly and set aside to cool. Using a mixer or hand mixer, beat the eggs, sugar, flour, Bourbon, vanilla extract and salt together at medium speed for about 2-3 minutes until thoroughly blended. Add the melted butter-chocolate mixture and beat for another minute or so to blend the ingredients thoroughly. Fold in the nuts. Spoon the mixture into the partially baked crust. Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool on a cake rack.

Hedging my bets...
Before the internet gave me a vast library of information on each horse in the Kentucky Derby, I was happy to believe in luck and was often lucky. I picked the horse that I wanted to win, despite any odds, basing it on the backstory, or how pretty it was, or how colorful the jockey was. Of course, those were the years that we didn’t do any cash wagering, so all I won was bragging rights and that…

It’s Derby Day!  🏇
The most exciting two minutes in sports is anyone’s guess this year, after a week full of drama and five scratches already (the most since 1936!), including heavy favorite Forte just this morning!  Out of the 18 horses still in the running, five are grays!  🤍😮
Mom’s soft spot for grays means we are obviously rooting for new favorite Tapit Trice, but my contemplative horse friend and I will also be cheering for freckled gray Reincarnate and keeping an eye on rather inconsistent Verifying and intriguing longshot Mandarin Hero.  🐎🐢
🔙  Who remembers when I first met my white-socked horse friend nine (!!) years ago?  Back then, I could ride on my horse friend’s back!!
🐢  Psst . . . Old Forester, what happened to the Kentucky Turtle Derby this year?!  🥺
