🔬 Dr. Ratio x Ruan Mei 🔬 ...For Science, of course.

She didn’t notice that her robe was sliding down from her shoulders. It wasn’t even tied very well, not exactly serving its purpose of covering her breasts very well. Ruan Mei had other priorities at the current moment in time. For all she could care, her robe could slide completely onto the floor, yet nothing could pry her away from the microscope at her desk.

Ratio still as if this was an unsuitable look for her. She did appear unbothered, especially given as they were both completely naked quite literally moments ago, but he still felt as if it was wrong to leave her in such a state. Ruan Mei probably didn’t even notice. Or care, for that matter. Regardless of what the case may be, he got up from the edge of the bed to help fix her robe.

"Are you making any progress on your studies?" Ratio asked.

"From observations made at a glance, it seems as if you are quite healthy and fertile," Ruan Mei said, sitting back from the microscope and jotting down a few notes. "While you are here, I would like to ask a small favor of you."

"Hm?"

"Your arm. Hold it out."

Ratio complied with her request without a second thought. She pressed her fingers against his wrist and recorded notes with her free hand, likely his pulse from what Ratio could catch a glimpse of. When she was finished, she held his arm out firmly, grabbed a syringe, and jammed it into his vein without a warning. Ratio winced slightly, though he very much knew that it was all a key part of Ruan Mei’s research.

She filled a vial up with his blood before securely taping a gauze pad over the bleeding area. Ratio rubbed his hand on the sore spot and flinched at the sting of pain that shot up his arm. A bit of a nuisance for him, but a small willing sacrifice he was willing to make for her.

"I would advise you to sit down," she said, "I drew more than the first time, and you are bound to become very dizzy within a few short moments."

"Understandable, but if I may ask,” he said, gently sliding her robe back onto her shoulders and around her body, "why do you require so much blood of me?"

"To accurately test your hormone levels," Ruan Mei clarified, "I have vials of both yours and mine, before and after, to give me an insight to the changes our bodies have underwent."

Ratio was starting to feel his body lose strength, so he leaned forward on her chair to steady himself. He noticed the vials of blood standing up on the desk, two marked with Ruan Meis name and two marked with his.

"Are there any other tests that you need to conduct on me for the time being?" Ratio offered, "I am at your service as your Guinea pig, after all."

"Not necessarily objective tests, but an insight into your emotional state would aid me greatly."

"Most interesting, as emotions are more often considered subjective rather than objective in the field of science."

"Emotional perception of a situation has their biases, but as those are caused by chemical reactions within the brain itself, there is no denying their presence. Thus, they are as important to consider as any other variable.”

Ruan Mei glanced over at a stack of notebooks shoved towards the back of her desk. Laying on the top and against the sides of the stack were photographs documenting a multitude of creatures with an apparent gelatinous consistency. Or “snacks,” as they have been dubbed. Though these “snacks” were an example of successfully created artificial lifeforms, Ruan Mei has considered their existence as an ultimate failure.

They were alive. They were breathing. They were conscious. Yet Ruan Mei still felt as if something was missing from their “recipe”. With the assistance of the Trailblazer, she observed that these creations were only capable of feeling a singular, static emotion, an explanation as to why some of them did nothing but cry or scoff, for example.

"You make a compelling statement," Ratio said.

He thought carefully about his next words. There was the physical feeling of Ruan Mei's body that still lingered strongly in his mind, but he believed that she was referring more to his emotional perspective on the ordeal. Curiously enough, the physical feeling of her and his emotional perspective seemed to go hand in hand. The softness of Ruan Mei's skin bought Ratio a great sense of comfort and ease, and being able to gaze upon the bare human body bought him the strangest sense of trust happiness.

This was supposed to be a simple act of assistance for Ruan Mei’s research. Why was sexual intimacy something that he would be more than happy to provide her with again? And why did he only consider such acts with her in particular?

As his body grew even more tired, he subconsciously leaned in closer to Ruan Mei.

"And if you can equate these feelings to sensations, that would be most welcome," she continued.

"Hmm…while in the midst of our act, I felt a certain…pleasure, as one may refer to it as. The softness and closeness of your body bought me great joy, and I felt as if I could trust you with my defenseless flesh.”

Ruan Mei tapped her pen on the desk, listening intently. "Interesting. Do go on."

"If I may add, I would love to experience it you again."

"And how are you feeling right now?"

"...Tired, but still glad that I was able to assist you in some way.”

Ruan Mei tapped her pen on her chin as she jotted down more notes and scanned over her results. Enjoyment of the experiment. A willingness to further participate in sexual activities with her. Most interesting.

Dr Ratio noticed the thoughtfulness in her gestures and expressions.

"Is something perhaps abnormal?" he questioned.

"Not in the context of plausible human emotion, but I am more curious about the significance of what your responses mean for you personally."

He suddenly felt himself become nervous.

"Do elaborate," he said.

"A strong attachment and an eagerness to continue with such intimacy… I do not believe that these feelings in question are part of… routine procedures."

"Well, how did you feel about it yourself?"

"Similar to how you described it. It was as if you were putting my feelings into more concise words. Like..."

Ruan Mei’s voice trailed off. She was beginning to understand what emotions were brewing within her, but the sensation was so new to her that proper words were not yet feasible.

"Like a feeling of not wanting to be separated?"

Ruan Mei nodded her head. Distracted by these thoughts brewing in her mind, she had completely stopped writing in her notebook.

"Yes, that is… precisely what it is," she said.

"Strong feelings of attraction are typically associated with romantic emotions," Ratio noted.

"Is...that so?" Ruan Mei asked, her thoughts finally clicking into place.

"This complex mix of emotions...It’s a part of being a living, breathing human individual."

Complex mix of emotions...Ruan Mei had one solution as to why her experiments didn’t quite net her desirable results. They were lacking a variety of emotions that set conscious creatures apart from entities that merely existed and breathed. A lack of a multiplex conscious, if one may specify.

With one answered question arose many more, and Ruan Mei’s newfound problem was the extent of her feelings.

"Ratio, are you possibly suggesting that..."

"Normally, such feelings are concluded before acts of sexual intimacy, at least to my understanding. If they are indeed mutual between the two of us, then perhaps our little experiment has yielded some rather unexpected results."

"If what you said holds some truth to it," Ruan Mei said, "perhaps...a quick study to determine how true?"

"By doing what, exactly?"

"Just...rest your head on my shoulder for a brief moment," she requested.

Ratio, becoming more deprived of energy by the minute, did as she asked of him and shifted his body weight forward, resting his head on her shoulder.

"Well?" he asked, "how does it feel?"

"It’s...quite nice," Ruan Mei said, gently stroking his hair. "And as for you?"

"Seconded."

"If you agree, then I suppose we have reached one surprising conclusion today."

"If you seek further supporting evidence, I can take you on an excursion often referred to as a date," Ratio offered.

"That would be most...lovely, actually. But not before you rest up. You have just had a significant amount of blood drawn, not to mention the exhaustion is typical among males."

"Noted..." Ratio said, clearly feeling the exhaustion in question.

Ruan Mei slid out of her chair, making sure Ratio was steady enough to not collapse. She swung his muscular arm around her shoulders, and tilted his body weight towards her.

"Allow me to guide you back to the bed. Rest easy, so our results from the date later will prove to be as accurate as possible."

— How to Play Black Swan in Simplified Form —

Black Swan can’t detonate any DoTs. Her DoT damage depends on enemy speed = backloaded damage. Her kit revolves entirely around increasing the damage enemies take from DoTs at beginning of their turns, by increasing the Arcana stacks on them.

She needs another DoT unit to apply DoTs on enemy and to trigger DoTs outside of enemies’ turns (e.g. Kafka, E4 Sampo, E6 Luka, or Guinaifen’s ultimate). This is possible when Epiphany is on enemies, since her Arcana stacks can also be triggered by other DoT units.

Theoretical Consensus:

Their calcs are mostly focused in stacking speed on their units.

In Hunterkee’s calcs, the speed ranges from 147 to 163 spd, where the healer is the fastest, while depending on the team comp, Guinaifen is the slowest.

The speed ranges from 153 to 162 spd in Bonk’s calcs, where Kafka and the healer are the slowest, while Ruan Mei is the fastest.

In GuobaCertified’s simulations, the speed ranges from 163 to 168 spd, where Ruan Mei is the fastest, while Kafka is the slowest.

Amongst the three calcs, Hunterkee’s is closer to home because that’s mostly the speed range that F2Ps and low-spender players can achieve for their character builds. GuobaCertified’s, however, looks something you’d only see in whale builds or minmax builds. In all 3 simulations, Black Swan’s speed is somewhere in the middle.

— Does she need Kafka? —

BS could work without Kafka, but BS needs another unit that would trigger her DoTs outside the enemies’ turns. BS loses a lot of damage if her damage only relies on enemies’ turns, with no one to detonate her DoTs outside their turns.

— How much boost does Black Swan bring to Kafka DoT teams? —

From Hunterkee’s calcs, Black Swan brings about 19% boost against single-target enemy and 33% boost on AoE.

— ATK% or SPD on boots? —

Slow BS = ATK% boots

Fast BS = SPD boots

BS in Pure Fiction = SPD boots

Reasoning:

MoC has a limit of 10 cycles for you to defeat the enemies. Whether you use ATK% or SPD boots on her, Black Swan needs time to gain stacks to deal more DoT damage on enemies’ turn start.

However, Pure Fiction needs you to clear the enemies at faster rate. This means you need to clear out the first 5, before the next 5 could spawn in. This is where SPD boots would be more advantageous for her to act more turns before the enemies.

Also, SPD boots if you need to reach the SPD threshold for Glamoth set.

NOTE: There’s this discussion about building Fast BS, Slow BS, and “Classical SPD” BS. “Classical SPD” BS means her having 134 SPD. The post is written by u/L0wpriority here and a counterargument was posted by u/guobacertified here. To know what goes on in their talks, better check those links instead.

However, for me, I’d say to build your BS’s SPD according to what her allies’ SPD are. I’ve linked below some showcase for BS teams and the team order of each. I also explained how those teams are formed and worked together in the Practical Consensus below.

Wind DMG% orb if no Ruan Mei; ATK% orb if Ruan Mei is in team. Difference is minimal.

Practical Consensus:

In teams with Ruan Mei, Black Swan speed in team showcase mostly ranges from 134 to 140+, while her teammates are ranging from 129 to 153 spd. Sustains are mostly either the slowest or fastest in the team. Other DoT allies are positioned either before or after Black Swan.

Ruan Mei is mostly used in Black Swan teams. This could be explained by Ruan Mei’s talent where she could reduce the SPD needed by Black Swan. With the enemies having 158 spd and reducing to 154 spd due to break, instead of needing 155 spd for Black Swan, she could settle with 145 spd instead.

Asta is used as alternative for Ruan Mei in F2P teams because she could increase the SPD of allies with her ultimate. Both Ruan Mei and Asta are positioned before Black Swan.

But, if no Ruan Mei in team, Black Swan is mostly built with slow build, with her DoT allies stacking as much DoTs as possible for her Arcana stacks. If BS is built with fast build (e.g having 155+ spd), this could alleviate the SP usage of the team because she could opt to use Basics instead.

Black Swan DMG relies on enemy turns, thus avoid using slow debuffs and imprisonment on enemies in her teams. However, she could utilize freeze mechanic and Ruan Mei’s break delay because despite freezing the enemies, the enemies still take their turn before being pushed back to take another later turn. This means that the enemies get two DoT turn triggers after getting frozen.

Some teams are quirky, but eh, it doesn’t matter. As long as their team could 3-star the stage, why make a problem out of it?

👋 Heyy I know you play Star Rail too so I wanted to know what quests you prioritised? I recently started playing again and I thought finishing the main quests before getting to the side quests but now I'm not so sure the way my ass is getting beat by these enemies especially those swarm bugs in Ruan Mei's quest💀 so maybe i should finish them off b4 the world level gets too high? What do you think?

Took a while to get to this but yeah:

You should get up to date in the main quests, as the events as of late are requiring you to finish the latest main story mission in order to play through them

It's really important for the current event if you don't have that many characters, since there's a free 4* selector not applicable anymore lol

If you're having trouble with main quests, try and focus on getting a good core team: One DPS, one support, and 2 sustainers or a sustainer and a support if your team is tanky enough (the main sustainer should be a healer cuz free preservation options are kinda not great)

Good DPS that you can get without pulling rn are Dr. Ratio, Herta, Qingque, and Dan Heng

Good free Supports are Asta and Yukong

Good free Sustains are Fire MC and Lynx (though for Lynx you need to unlock Pure Fiction and clear at least two stages), if you don't have Lynx then Natasha works just fine

Focus on leveling in this priority: Character Level > Traces > Light Cone Level > Relics (Good Main Stats) > Relics (Good Main and Sub stats)

Don't grind relics until you're AR45 though, you should get by with free relics from treasure chests or quests until then

Nanook

The Aeon that presides over the Path of Destruction. THEY were born from Adlivun as the world fell. THEY often appear as a human male with dark skin and golden eyes.

Arlan

The head of Herta Space Station's Security Department. This inarticulate boy is willing to protect the researchers in pursuit of their work with his life.

Blade

A member of the Stellaron Hunters, and a swordsman who abandoned his body to become a blade. He pledges loyalty to Destiny's Slave, and possesses a terrifying self-healing ability.

unowned: lost 50/50 during his release banner and then skipped him during 1.6 rerun because I was saving for e2 dhil. very tempted pull him during a future rerun just to complete my collection of the playable high-cloud quintet members. probably won't do that though, I'd be better off pulling a wind dps on a different path

Clara

A vagrant girl who lives with robots. She is introverted, gentle, and has a pure heart. She wishes for all Underworlders to become a family.

Dan Heng - Imbibitor Lunae

Dan Heng's true form from his Vidyadhara lineage carries the residual power left behind by his past incarnation, the Imbibitor Lunae. Upon accepting the majestic horned crown atop his forehead, he must accept all the merits and faults attributed to that sinner.

daniel and I have had a very tumultuous building experience; prior to my latest upgrade, I was still using a rutilant imaginary sphere that had a 15% hp substat on it

this build is more than fine, and I really don't need to mess with it unless I'm going to pull his signature light cone; I want sig, but I have no idea how long I'll be waiting for another rerun since we just had one during 2.0

pulling sparkle for him is my absolute top priority; min-maxing dhil probably won't continue until at least midway through version 2.5

latest upgrade - 7.19.24

Firefly

A self-proclaimed greenhorn performer of the Iris Family, but actually a member of the Stellaron Hunters. To ensure that "the Express chases after the 'grand legacy' alongside them," she risked her life and finally "returns from the dead."

unowned: skipped to fish for Gallagher copies on Ruan Mei's 2.3 rerun banner. not interested in pulling as my dedicated fire dps

Hook

Boss (self-proclaimed) of an Underworld adventure squad, The Moles. She loves freedom and sees life as a series of adventures.

unleveled: lvl 1, e6

Jingliu

Former Sword Champion of the Luofu, and the reason behind the Cloud Knights' mythical reputation of implacable might. Now, her name has been wiped from the records, and she is a traitor of the Xianzhou walking on the fine line between sanity and mara-struck.

so, as it turns out, I hate hypercarry jingliu: I have gone back to the +1/-1 spd setup; it would've been far less of a hassle to continue running this in the first place (i.e. if it ain't broke, don't fix it)

switched head/hand pcs to ones w/spd & swapped to spd boots (which I forgot I owned); she's currently 3.7 spd faster than she needs to be, although the gap shouldn't really cause any tuning issues with bronya(?)

relevant stat changes: +41.1 spd, -2.6% crate, -27.9% cdmg, -570 atk

score change: +9 (S+)

every time that I mess with this woman, she loses crate and it's very unfortunate because her crate is already abysmal as it is. also lost a large chunk of atk & cdmg but the cost was necessary for my rotation so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

need to farm hunter (cdmg body + spd boots) & rutilant (ice dmg sphere), preferably w/double crit or crate + atk

very, very close to groveling down on my knees for crate subs bc I don’t know what else to do; all of jingliu's problems have revolved around her crit ratio the entire time that I’ve had her. I need something to change, preferably soon, lest I min-max away my sanity

Misha

The naive and ignorant protagonist of Mikhail's childhood dreams. He ran away from the dream bubble. As he bears the mission of guiding the Astral Express to discover the Watchmaker's legacy, he mistakenly believes himself to be Penacony's "bellboy".

Physical Trailblazer

A [person] who boarded the Astral Express. They chose to travel with the Astral Express to eliminate the dangers posed by the Stellaron.

unbuilt: removed & recycled outdated relics. not likely to rebuild

Xueyi

Judge of the Ten-Lords Commission, which controls life and death on the Luofu. She inhabits a puppet body to return to the world and carry out her missions.

unleveled: lvl 1, e6

Yunli

A Zhuming swordmaster visiting the Xianzhou Luofu. General Huaiyan's beloved adopted granddaughter. She offers no pretenses for warriors who are lacking in virtue and love to claim the weapons of her defeated foes.

unowned: won't be pulling her because her kit is too reminiscent of clara's (who I currently have no interest in leveling up). not sure what it is about counter-attackers but they've yet to grab my interest enough to want to play one of them. might've been more willing to consider her if she had been a different element

Changelogs will only be created and maintained for the characters that I actively use; they will be updated whenever significant relic upgrades/changes have been made. Characters that have multiple builds (i.e. additional builds that are non-traditional, niche, or memes) will have a dedicated changelog for each one.
