This is why Writing Tools by Roy Peter Clark is my favorite, always-recommend book on writing. So much writing advice is sort of… ethereal, nebulous and not very actionable, or otherwise often too specific to the individual who gave it. And like, fair enough. But everything RPC gives you in Writing Tools is something you can try immediately. And it’s also very easy to consume.
In other words it’s got all good tips and like, zero waffle.
every writing tip article and their mother: dont ever use adverbs ever!
me, shoveling more adverbs onto the page because i do what i want: just you fucking try and stop me

This semester I have a variety of 13 books included in my TBR stack to read and finish within 16 weeks. 13 books in 16 weeks but I have 13 books, pitches, portfolios, final papers, and presentations, but no final exams this semester, so that’s a blessing. Yay for English classes. Yay for being a writing major. (:
To Be Read Stack:
The Place of the Lion
How to Think
The Man Who Was Thursday
The Princess and Curdie
Perelandra
The Great Divorce
Handling the Truth

Hello there! I've been admiring your amazing writing for... *checks notes* about 7 years now, and I wondered if you had any tips or advice you'd be down to share? no worries if, hope you have a wonderful day!
aw, thank you very much!! god i'm withering to dust as i type this. all this stuff is pretty subjective, and i think a lot of how-to writing advice is 'how to write like me' so i'd take all of it, especially mine, with a pinch of salt
if you write fanfiction (lord knows i do!) keep a varied media diet. books, obviously, movies, television shows. love fic to bits, but having it sit too large in your reference pool can lead to bad habits. lots of media, but especially challenging media. picking up a random book and hating it enough to put it down two pages in is a fantastic use of your time, because that develops taste. why do i hate this kind of plot? how would i do it? why? and so on, ask yourself questions. save paragraphs you love from novels and keep them somewhere, stare at them sometimes. oh, engage in analysis where possible! you'll notice writing isn't happening yet, unfortunately that has to come last.
this is more a pet peeve of mine, but try to be aware of dialogue that's too representative of what a character is really thinking. it's a little hard to explain if you've never seen it, but have you ever read a book or played a game or the like and it's kind of... too snug where it shouldn't be? it feels a little like a children's show, but for adults? it's that. too many 'i think' 'i feel' statements in spoken dialogue from characters who are otherwise not that emotionally intelligent. the human animal is a messy, temperamental creature, and we're stuck conveying gigantic ideas at the height of emotion through an incredibly lossy communication format. say you're writing a couple, and one says to the other 'when you don't do the dishes, i feel unappreciated', and the other says 'i hear that, but when you don't trust me to do them after i recover from my shift, i feel like you don't understand how hard my job is'. wonderful regulation skills. terrible to read. have somebody blow up, or say something that's accidentally mean, or storm off, or smash a plate or shoot somebody, or not say anything at all. have them be outright wrong about how they feel because they don't understand it. anything you can do to fray that little thread between brain and mouth, just a touch
biggest thing: write for yourself. the more specific, the better. if needed, expand to a group chat of sickos who'll post fire emojis. if you do have an audience in mind, never write for the most incurious person in it. the minute you worry somebody won't 'get' it, you'll write homiletic prose, and the people who will suddenly won't either. you get it. anybody else is a bonus. good luck!!

Scenario the DC and Marvel universe collide which Marvel hero would get along best with the following DC heroes and what would their friendship be like
Superman
Batman
Nightwing
Robin either Tim or Damian
Green Arrow
Arsenal
Wonder Woman
Donna Troy
Wonder Girl Cassie Sandsmark
Green Lantern either Hal Jordan or John Stewart
Starfire
Raven
Cyborg
And Beast Boy
Thank You! 😃
Oh Ho a Big One
@confusedhummingbird
Okey Dokey let’s see what I can think up ;-)
Clark Kent - Steve Rogers
Bruce Wayne - Both Tony Stark and Matt Murdock
Dick Grayson - Both Peter Parker (adult) and Kurt Wagner
Tim(my) Drake - Either Peter Parker (Teen/Ultimate Universe) or Miles Morales
Oliver Queen - Clint Barton though more like friendly rivals
Roy Harper - I can see him be a teacher figure to Kate Bishop
Diana Prince - Maybe she can befriend the Jane Foster Thor, maybe even try out lifting her hammer by herself…she did make it jiggle a little bit
Donna Troy - I can see her actually getting along with either Natasha or Gamora, as the type of the friend that can connect with them and encourage them in taking it easy every once in a while
Cassie Sandsmark - Kamala Khan, plain and simple
John Stewart - I see him being on good terms with Carol Danvers given how the both of them are familiar with differing branches of the military, the former a Marine and the latter an Air Force pilot
Koriand’r - Oh There are so many that can get along very well with her given Kory’s legendary friendliness but keeping in theme with Dick befriending an adult Peter Parker, I see Kory totally hanging out with Mary Jane Watson. Bonus points if MJ has some of Peter’s spider powers as Spinneret
Rachel Roth - Probably I see her sympathizers and talking with Wanda Maximoff. While Magneto is nowhere near a bad of a father as Trigon is, they still can both relate to having less than ideal fathers and how their friends are their real family. Oh And yeah I see Rae getting along well with Wanda’s kids Tommy and especially Billy
Victor Stone - I can see him no doubt fawning and being utterly amazed by the tech at Stark Industries especially all those various Iron Suits. Rhodey is the one giving him the extensive tour and they’d have so much to talk about
Garfield Logan - For him, I can see him paling around with all the Wolvies, in particular Laura and Logan themselves. He looks up to Logan no doubt for the latter’s coolness factor and in turn Logan looks at this green fella with some uncertainty for how overtly excited he is but he finds it charming. Also no doubt Gar can shift into an actual Wolverine if Jonathan the Wolverine needs anything
One things for certain everyone here; they are all very uncomfortable with both Frank Castle and Wade Wilson. For differing reasons but still

Rolling Stone Magazine Top 250 Guitarists - The Omissions List
Once again, Rolling Stone Magazine puts together a list that no one asked for and it's a complete mess. Instead of analyzing craft and technique, Rolling Stone goes for popularity and mediocrity. Who in their right mind thinks that Joni Mitchell, not known primarily for her guitar work, is Top 10 material, but Slowhand himself, Eric Clapton only worth making it it to 35? Also, why is The Edge, probably the worst guitarist ever, have a place in the top 50 and Jose Feliciano, a master of classical style, not even crack the top 200? I can go on for hours about the inconsistencies, but for now, I will focus on the many guitarists that Rolling Stone left off.

Open to the Outlandish: A Conversation with Rebecca Renner
With the Creative Nonfiction Podcast, Brendan O’Meara takes us behind the scenes to learn more about how longform stories get made. In this excerpt, he talks to author and journalist Rebecca Renner about getting that first draft down, the importance of a strong editor, and how a story evolves from pitch to publication.
Brendan: What you were saying a while ago, you were just urged to write, just get stuff down on the page. It’s really important to do that, because that early draft, that rough draft, or maybe the zero draft, as Roy Peter Clark might call it, it’s terraforming the world or making the map. And there are always going to be gaps in that cartography, and you’ve got to feel like “Okay, here’s a dark spot in the map. How do we fill this in?” But sometimes you don’t know that gap is there until you start and it reveals what else you need to do. Unless you have—for lack of a better term—the courage to start and write before you’re ready, that stuff has a tendency to always be in the shadows, and you need to write your way through it.
Rebecca: I’ve actually been reading The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. And I feel like some people think that book is a little woo woo. I did when I first started reading it, but I really like how he talks about being open to the possibilities of the creative act and the potential there, being able to get into the flow state and stopping yourself from self-criticism and over-analyzing, getting yourself to open up. That has been one of the most important things to do in my creative process because I have to remind myself that I have all the things I need; it’s all there. And then I don’t have to keep going out and getting more details or over-report things, which I have a problem doing, or even in fiction that I just have to believe that I have the story and that I have to get it down. Then I’ll see the lacunae.
Check out the full interview.

Dark Matter by mysterycyclone The last thing Peter sees is Tony's horrified, heartbroken expression leaning over him. The guilt in his eyes is almost worse than the burning pain that's taking Peter apart piece by piece. The world starts to go dark.
There's a flash of gold and green. For one moment, he finds himself standing amongst the Guardians and others. And then darkness again. It feels like blinking; an extended period of nothingness that ends as abruptly as it begins. One moment there’s nothing, the next there’s light.
“Easy,” a woman says. Her words are gentle, and carry a slight accent that he can’t place. "I'm called Wonder Woman. What's your name?"

Revenge is a Word I Haven't Yet Defined (I’m not sure I’m worthy of such theatrics) by OliOcelot After the Lazarus Pits and a year of training with the League, Talia sends Jason to Gotham for revenge. Except Jason isn’t as deep as she thinks. The thing is, he expected to see Bruce - Batman - and be livid. He let him die, replaced him. He should be mad.
He isn’t.
In the end, it’s hard to think of yourself as being replaced when you died. So yeah, he’s angry, but he’s not angry enough for revenge. Not like Talia wants him to be.
So he focuses on Red Hood and cleaning up Crime Alley, and scraps any ideas of revenge he had left. They’re unnecessary. Counterproductive, in fact, because now that he’s actually seen Bruce, all he really wants is to go home. Maybe have a conversation or two about how bad Bruce and Dick messed up, but at home.
Instead, he gets caught up in world altering magic from some criminal in over his head, and Jason finds himself tumbling through universes into a New York filled with heroes that he’s never even heard of and a lack of Gotham and Metropolis that can only mean one thing. This isn’t the world he knows.
All he wants is to get home, to make amends, to try again. Too bad none of them know he’s gone. Not that anyone would think to look for a dead boy.

To Dig a Grave in Winter by OliOcelot The Winter Soldier isn’t the only Asset that Hydra has. This will be their downfall.
Or, Jason Todd rose from his grave only to be taken by Hydra and turned into a living weapon, known as the Gravewalker. Meeting the Winter Soldier might just make it worth it.
T | Graphic Depictions Of Violence, No Archive Warnings Apply | James Bucky Barnes (Marvel) & Jason Todd (DCU), James Bucky Barnes (Marvel)/Jason Todd (DCU)
in labyrinths of reflections by blackkat With the incursions imminent, Khonshu steals his avatar away to another dimension, where there's little risk of the universes colliding.
Marc is unprepared for Gotham, but it's probably safe to say that Gotham is equally unprepared for Marc.

no map to my own treasure by blackkat “I think this is yours.”
Bruce doesn’t even have to look up. He already knows precisely what this is about. Containing a sigh, he rubs the bridge of his nose, and says, “If he bit you, I can pay for the emergency room visit—”
“I did not bite him,” Damian says, outraged.

Knaves All Three by Ginevra_Benci After Ultron, Avengers Tower hosts a good-will gala to fundraise for post-Incident NYC.

Jason Todd makes contact.
Well. He tries to.

Bats Out of Hell by Jedi_Olympian Dick and Tim find themselves in a bit of trouble. Multiversal trouble. Needless to say, their boyfriends are not happy about it, and the universe they find themselves in is unlike any they've found themselves in before.
Or Dick and Tim get thrown into the MCU and meet the Avengers.
T | No Archive Warnings Apply | Dick Grayson/Jason Todd, Tim Drake/Kon-El | Conner Kent, Tim Drake & Dick Grayson, Jason Todd & Bruce Wayne
If It's A Highway by there_must_be_a_lock Bucky’s been running for a week when the supposedly-untraceable burner phone he stole from a HYDRA warehouse starts ringing. He’s in a gas station bathroom off a remote highway close to the Croatian border, getting ready to bleach his hair; the ringtone bounces shrilly off the bare tiles and makes his jaw clench tight.
[Or: the one where Bucky is hired to train Jason, and he ends up learning a thing or two himself.]
E | No Archive Warnings Apply | James "Bucky" Barnes/Jason Todd
There but for Grace go I by AutumnHobbit Frank Castle comes to Gotham on the trail of some human traffickers who picked the wrong city. Imagine his surprise to find he isn’t the only one out for their blood. When things turn sour he decides to get involved, which leads to a lot of unexpected drama.
And he thought New York’s costumed paraders were bad.

The Five Stages of Neighborly Affection by AlannaLioness, phonecallfromgod, youshallnotfinditso Between Matt being back from the dead, Nelson & Murdock 2.0 and a fancy Manhattan apartment from his (former) sharky boss, Foggy feels like he's doing pretty well keeping the vigilante nonsense in his life to a minimum.
Or he was until he moved next door to Tim Drake.

Shake the Devil Out of Me by thepartyresponsible The first time Jason sees Phil Coulson, he sees him in the soft, flickering light of a warehouse fire. It’s romantic, he thinks, later. Like candlelight.

The Dawn Will Break Before You by thepartyresponsible “Okay, heartbreaker,” he says, “how much to put the tires back on the car?”
Jason rolls his eyes and gestures at him with the lug wrench. “Why don’t I just beat you up and steal your money? Is this the first time you’ve been to a bad part of town? Don’t show me your wallet, asshole. Come on.”
The man heaves a heavy, aggrieved sigh and starts pulling out bills. “Five hundred?” He tries. “Six? We can go to an ATM.”
“You are mugging yourself,” Jason says, oddly impressed. “Holy shit.”

birds fly (why can't I?) by SafelyCapricious The apartment in Gotham that Natasha gets — all cash and no ID required — is a shithole.

Five Supersoldiers Walk Into a Bar by bittercape He spots him through the binoculars, far away and disappearing fast. Logan is, more than anything, a hunter. He knows how to watch, and he watches the sniper moving away, after a single well-placed shot. He moves just like Barnes did. Everyone has a particular way of moving, if you know how to watch. And Logan, as mentioned, knows how to watch.
Logan knows it cannot be him, knows he died, falling from a train. No normal human could survive that. And yet …
He drops down from the watchtower. He’ll catch hell for this, sure. But he has to know.

five, six, just for kicks by bittercape “Good evening,” Jason says, because he does have manners when he wants to use them. “Talia al Ghul sent me for training.”
“Right,” the man says. “You’re here for training with Deathstroke.”
“Yeees,” Jason says. This seems more than a little eccentric. “And you are Deathstroke?”
“Yes indeed!” the man says. “It is I, Deathstroke!”

In The Oddest Places by withthekeyisking After pulling Steve Rogers out of the water, there's not a lot that the Soldier knows. But going to ground? Yeah, he can do that.
If only there wasn't another super soldier trying to get in his way.
