Listen/purchase: The Olive Tape
The Olive Tape is a collection of new, exclusive songs & poems by 24 artists, compiled to raise funds for humanitarian aid in Palestine.
All proceeds will go to the PCRF and Anera. As of this moment, the IOF’s current assault on Rafah leaves a staggering population of over a million Palestinians trapped with nowhere to go. There’s never been a better time to give your support to notable foundations with proven track records in the area.
This tape was produced by a group of artists who care deeply and some of whom are tied personally to the occupation of Palestine.
If you have the time, at least listen give it a listen.

The Diplomat: Season 2 – TV Review
TL;DR – A fantastic follow-up from the first season that had me on the edge of my seat at times and ended on one of the most bonkers moments I have seen all year. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. Disclosure – I paid for the Netflix service that viewed this series. The Diplomat Review – My background is in International Relations, and it does not come up here as much as I would like, other than the…

Wind whistles over the craggy white rock; a messenger that carries the call of the goddess through the narrow cave entrance and into it's inky black depths to the ears of it's occupant. A beat passes, then another. And then everything goes still.
From within the tunneled entrance there is the soft sound of shifting scales against stone. There is a sense of reluctance about the noise, but stop it does not, increasing in volume until the source is illuminated by the outside light shining in, revealing the resident Athena seeks.
Despite the strip of cloth tied tight over slitted eyes, the serpentine woman knows precisely where her visitor stands courtesy of the several snakes tangled in her matted brown hair. Connected as they are, they let her sense the body heat of her lady, and so it is that the monster of the island knows which direction to bow her head in contrition. Her thick, impressive coils bunch behind her, giving the impression of self-conscious shame at her appearance. Keeping the reptilian half purposely close to the ground, Medusa does her best approximation of kneeling, only her rags-clad humanoid upper body remaining off the rocky earth, though even that is hunched and bowed forward. A hurt that almost mirrors the goddess' sits, sharp and painful, within the gorgon's chest alongside her shame.
"I heed your call, my lady. What answers do you seek?" she asks, the words lisping slightly around sharp fangs. Her head bows further forwards, and even the snakes seem to be keeping themselves lowered in submission. Whatever Athena asks, Medusa is ready to answer.

athena was immune to the curse. a terrible decision on her part, in retrospect. perhaps, if she too could have succumbed to medusa's powers, she might have been wise enough to stay away. if she too could be turned to stone, maybe athena might have saved herself the confusion of anger that felt a lot like heartache.
i was betrayed, athena told herself. i can be angry and upset at this betrayal.
which made medusa's prayers all the more aggravating, all the more upsetting, all the more confusing. athena should have stayed away, but she could not. and so there she stood, on the precipice of medusa's home, her hands in fists at her side.
"i am here to demand answers," athena called out, heart thudding painfully. "come."

Two movies with actual wlw content:
THE INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURES OF TWO GIRLS IN LOVE (1995): Low-budget lesbian teen romcom, written and directed by Maria Maggenti, about the budding romance between 17-year-old baby butch Randy (Laurel Holloman, who later played Tina on THE L WORD), who works at a gas station and is in danger of not graduating high school, and a rich Black classmate named Evie (Nicole Ari Parker), who drives a $50,000 SUV and reads Walt Whitman. Cute and generally charming, though mostly at a sitcom level, it's most interesting when it contrasts the girls' home lives (Randy lives with her lesbian moms and aunt, while Evie lives with her affluent control freak single mother, played by Stephanie Berry). A somewhat disquieting element is teenage Randy's ongoing on-the-down-low affair with an older married woman (Maggie Moore), a situation that doesn't seem to trouble anyone other than the woman's boorish husband (John Elsen), and which the movie ultimately plays for laughs. CONTAINS LESBIANS? It's a lesbian movie, Bront. VERDICT: Pleasant, inconsequential.
JAGGED MIND (2023): Awkwardly titled, awkwardly realized lesbian thriller about a young Black artist named Billie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), on the rebound from an emotionally unavailable ex (Rosaline Elbay), who jumps impulsively into a new relationship with a white woman named Alex (Shannon Woodward) despite struggling with debilitating memory problems that result in frequent déjà vu and jarring flashbacks to arguments and even violent incidents that can't have actually happened. (Or can they? Etc.) The editing tricks used to illustrate Bilie's flashbacks are dramatically effective, but the eventual explanation of what's going on is not, involving too big a leap from what's already been established while leaving some important story threads (and character motivations) largely unexplained; the film ends up relying heavily on Richardson-Sellers' looks and charm to paper over an abundance of holes in the plot. Perhaps most interesting as a companion piece to the 2022 movie HEATWAVE, with Kat Graham, another recent thriller about a queer Black heroine falling, at her peril, for a mysterious white woman — an emerging sub-genre of gay cautionary tale? (Of the two, HEATWAVE is better, mostly because while it also falls short, its more modest ambitions keep it from bruising itself quite so badly in the fall.) CONTAINS LESBIANS? Almost exclusively! VERDICT: Good-looking, half-baked.

helloooo, i was wondering where you could see a hande erçel fitting in as and maybe some fc options for princess jasmine? thank you so much!!
Thanks for the question! Honestly, she'd fit so many characters it would be hard to narrow it down to just one, so we encourage you to follow your muse. You can find all of our open female characters here and we'd especially love to see any featured in our Most Wanted Wednesday posts. Feel free to message off anon, though, if you're looking for a specific vibe and we'd be happy to help you find someone that fits that vision.
As for Jasmine, here are some suggestions for Middle Eastern FCs: Yasmine Al-Bustami, Noor Taher, Sonia Ben Ammar, Leem Lubany, Sofia Boutella, May Calamawy, Josie Totah, Sandra Haj, Natacha Karam, Maram Zbaeda, Shirine Boutella, Azza Slimene, Hanan Tarq, Rosaline Elbay, Dina Denoire, Nour Al Ghandour, Valerie Abou Chacra, Salma Abu-Deif, Mika Abdalla, Jihane Almira Chedid, and Tara Emad.

anonymous said : Can I get some fc suggestions for Donna Troy pls? Thanks!
sure thing, babe! for donna, depending on what verse you're pulling her from, we do ask that she either be played by the same fc that we currently have for diana, who is may calamawy, or similarly matches her ethnicity. so, with that in mind, we could suggest imaan hammam, yasmine al massri, rosaline elbay, dina denoire, tara emad, or becca khalil!!

Hollywood sure knows how to cast actors for the role of an Egyptian, but some producers just feel like following the Afrocentric agenda (yikes!)
While a lot of Hollywood productions that feature Egypt(ians) are nothing but.. embarrassing, whether it was before or after the trend of Afrocentrism, as they were "played by non-Egyptians in bronze face" (Nour), like The Mummy (1999), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), and others.
Nour writes, "Actual Egyptians, and Arabs more broadly, usually performed the roles of a bumbling sideshow act in these movies: stealing treasures from ancient tombs or summoning evil spirits with the help of the occult; typifying the very worst stereotypes of Orientalist fantasy."
There is a not-very-fine line between cultural appropriation and appreciation, and this line needs to be drawn as bold as possible here.
There is definitely no shortage of Egyptians who can speak flawless English and have the talent to be starring Hollywood movies, a few of them would be: Oscar-winning Rami Malek, Omar Sharif, Mena Massoud, Rosaline Elbay, and May Calamawy (some of whom were actually casted in Egyptian roles). Yet, for some reason, Gal Gadot, an Israeli actress, was chosen to play Cleopatra --- and it is her in one production, or Adele James (black actress) in another. I mean, hello? Egyptians and Greeks are still here and would like to have a say in the representation of one of their most iconic historical figures?
I agree with Nour's argument when he writes that "the historical persona of Cleopatra is not some imaginary idea which can be re-created according to people’s whims and wishes. She is a Queen of Egyptian history and it is the right of the Egyptian people to have a say in her portrayal. As the son of Egyptians, who is proud of his eclectic heritage, his people and his culture, I say, boldly and defiantly: I am Cleopatra."
An ancient Roman bust, c. 50-30 BC, now held at The British Museum, depicting a woman from Ptolemaic Egypt, either Queen Cleopatra VII or a member of her entourage, during her 46-44 BC visit to Rome with her lover Julius Caesar. The bust is now located in the British Museum, London.

I know that there's the whole celebrities aren't our friends thing and I thought I outgrew being disappointed in them, I though I no longer expected anything from famous people
that being said, taika waititi being in support of genocide shocked me, since he was always talking about indigenous pride etc etc
please don't put obsessing over a celebrity and needing them to be good over your own morals
(for people that don't know what I'm talking about - some celebs signed a letter supporting what biden and Israel are doing, and some other celebs signed a letter in support of ceasefire. Taika's name wasn't in the second letter)
i will be deleting insensitive replies and comments, since this isn't just some discourse - it's about ethnic cleansing and active genocide
(edit: also for the 'but he's jewish' comments, being Jewish doesn't equal being in support of genocide. I have plenty of Jewish friends an they're all pro Palestine)
