Heiress of Fire is an impressive debut novel featuring an engaging story and an endearing cast of characters that had immense potential as a group. This book is perfect for fantasy readers, eldest daughters, and those looking for a fun, faith-based fictional read geared toward young adult audiences. I enjoyed the reading experience overall, and I was very excited to pick up this book mostly due to the presence of the found family trope. 

In the beginning, I had very high hopes for these characters as a team. A close-knit group of heroes with distinct personalities and quality banter and dialogue was something I have been missing since the days of The Lunar Chronicles and Six of Crows. As previously mentioned, this group had a lot of potential. However, the only characters really explored and given dimension were Davina and Ron. I really wish we would have gotten to see more of these characters interacting together and gotten a better idea of their relationship dynamics. I would have loved to see them grow and develop as they struggle with the weight of being young people that are thrust into leadership during a war. I think it would have been really great to see these characters written as an ensemble cast, giving a brief look into each of their perspectives and showing their thought processes as they work to become a team and a family. For example, I would have liked to see Valerie and Beacon grapple with the responsibility of being the oldest members of the group, as well as the effect that this responsibility has on their relationship and their future. Snow is often described as icy and snarky, but I would have liked that sharpness to be shown rather than told on the page. I would have liked to see Cara develop in her training, and Caleb come to terms with the betrayal at the end of the book. I could very much see myself becoming attached to these characters, and there was potential for some really great relationships and storylines if they had been given just a little bit of depth. I think it would have helped if the characters didn’t live separately from each other. The lack of physical togetherness made it difficult to see their relationships and friendships grow and change, and reading more in-depth about those relationships would have given the events of the story more impact, because readers could connect significantly more to the characters and really care more deeply about what happens to them. There are a lot of time jumps that are very sudden in this book where no character development happens, and the timeline got sort of confusing throughout the last half of the book. Everything that happened felt very sudden and out-of-nowhere, which made for a fast paced plot, but also gave me whiplash as a reader at times. 

One thing that was done brilliantly within this book was the worldbuilding and magic system. I was blown away by the detail and organization of this fantasy world, especially for a debut novel. The magic system was easy to understand, being based on the elements as well as being color-coded, and it reminded me a bit of stories like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Divergent. The different islands each having different powers and colors ascribed to them made them easy to memorize, and it was interesting to read about how all the different Bellatormans interacted. The different “biomes,” if you will, on each island gave variety to the setting of the book, not unlike the different Courts of the ACOTAR series, and that made the story more interesting. The map within this book was  very helpful as well, and a great resource to have in any fantasy book.  I liked each of our main characters being assigned their own color scheme as well, making it seem more like a team of superheroes. 

The only thing that really took me out of the story in this book was the grammar. It seems like the book could have definitely used a few more rounds of edits, as I ran across many different grammatical errors, and sometimes incomplete sentences throughout. This made it difficult to stay immersed in the story when I was often having to restructure the wording in my head at many points. 

Another thing that was done exceptionally well in this book was Davina’s relationship with her family. Her struggles with her parents clashing with her love for her siblings and her desire to protect them was very emotional, and probably the best, most fleshed-out aspect of the book. Davina’s motives are very clear, and she is steadfast in them, which makes her a very engaging main character. I cannot give enough accolades to the author for illustrating the familial struggle in such a real and impactful way. 

The allegorical nature of King Magnar as a character was interesting to me and was a clear representation of the Christian faith that could likely do a great job of explaining that faith to someone who is not apart of it, but it was thinly veiled enough that I understand how it could be jarring to non-Christian readers who did not realize this was going to be an aspect of the plot, especially not an aspect as large and important to the story as it was. 

The hero’s journey archetype is somewhat absent from the plot of this book. We see the protectors use their power, but we don’t really see them struggle or deal with the responsibility they’ve been given. As things happen, they’re just kind of like “Ope. Okay” and we don’t seem to see much of the denial or inadequacy or fervor about their cause. This could also have something to do with the fact that they don’t interact enough. They just pick up and keep going without discussing or processing, and it seemed like a lot of their discussions as a team happened off page. 

The action scenes were written well in this book and were easy to follow. The pacing of the novel, aside from the time jumps, was done well and kept me engaged as a reader. I did not guess any of the plot twists at the end ahead of time, so I was able to experience the full effect of those developments. 

Overall, I very much enjoyed my reading experience with this book, and I will be picking up the second in the series upon its release. This novel reignited my desire to read fantasy, and I am excited to see more of these characters. Sherlyn’s writing, imagery, and the depth and care with which she wrote Davina were very good, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fantasy read that is full of heart, faith, and passion.

Ethan I am reading Catch-22. I'm about a 4th of the way done. It's so funny and so scary. I have to say I understand why book people didn't like the miniseries. I think it is excellent as a stand alone work but it's more in the HBO war vein as far as tone goes, it's a lot less patriotic and better for it but played very straight compared to the book. I am having a very good (bad) time with it. I will keep you informed of the situation as it develops

RONNIE. gripping you by the shoulders but in a chill and relaxed way you have no idea how happy i am to hear this. literally it's funny and scary and it only gets scarier!!!!! it's so crazy in there it's life changing. i still need to watch the miniseries LOL sorry for getting sidetracked with the terror disease. but uugghhh ouuuugghhhhhh its so good. my beautiful friend yossarian. i have to watch the show to discuss the differences with you i have no idea how much it changes or leaves out but isn't it crazy that there's no dunbar in the miniseries... dunbar my best friend dunbar.... anyway i hope you continue to have a good bad time with it please do keep me informed . i <3 catch 22

I, personally, think at least one of them would be on the protective side but can't really do anything about it...unless they found a way to return as ghosts.

Since this seems to be an issue [not with you dear, in general] let it be known: I do not support J.K. Rowling in anyway. This au, this idea is for the fans by a fan who knows that HP is incredibly flawed and written by an awful person but someone who also is attached to the idea and what it could have been.

3. Oh man, I'll tell you now, everyone is divided.

Some are rooting for Cedric because in this crack au he and Harry got to know each other a lot earlier, and many think they are cute. They think Cedric is great because he really helps put Harry at ease and he is always great at bringing Harry's self esteem back up.

Some are rooting for Theo because they feel like Theo and Harry really understand one another and are very patient with one another. Hermoine feels like Theo brings out the best in Harry. When Theo's around, Harry tends to think things through more and Hermoine feels like he smiles more easily and is more open.

Some of course are rooting for Fred, especially Ron and George, because Ron thinks it's a brilliant way to have Harry as a brother and George because Harry and Fred make each other laugh. Plus, Harry has never struggled to tell the twins apart, and that is something so important to them.

Smaller groups are rooting for Daphne and Fay. Daphne because Astoria has never seen her sister so interested in someone like this before, nor has she seen someone actually listen to her sister as attentively as Harry has done when her sister spoke about her struggles. Fay because her friends are honestly so surprised something other than her projects and school caught her attention and they think they'd be cute.

Then there are the OCs who have the supports of their respective schoolmates, purely because friendship but like also...solidarity mf. They are in uncharted territory. They gotta stick together.

4. James finds it absolutely hilarious but is also a little put out that he was never this popular.

Lily is the worried one because, look, James may not have been as popular as their son but he was pretty popular, as was Sirius and Remus and the AMOUNT of schemes she overheard to win their affections was worrisome and concerning. The amount of love potion doused things she threw out without their knowledge was also something that lingered in her mind whenever they were able to peak into the living world and watch over their little boy.

They never thought about returning as ghosts. Therefore, never registered with the ministry, but they are spirits with unfinished business and can't cross fully until they know Harry is safe and sound. They go in-between passing on and limbo a lot. But since the Potters are descendants of the Peveralls and the whole connection to Death, James and Lily get a special privilege of being able to see into the living world and watching over Harry.

It takes a lot of energy, though, so usually they do this one at a time and catch each other up on what the other observed.

But yeah! I love Potter Family Opera asks! But I definitely will be sharing my other HP fic idea because man are some angsty. I'm a sucker for Harry dies and wakes up in the past and gets to things over and I want to try my hand on that. I also want to try my hand at Harry leaving the British Wizarding World because he's just done.

3128º Álbum: Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow

(1975) Epic

Jeff Beck es conocido principalmente por haber tocado en los Yardbirds, y siendo uno de los tres grandes guitarristas que pasaron por esta formación, junto con Eric Clapton y Jimi Page, de los tres tal vez el mejor y más desconocido.

Jeff Beck comenzó a ser conocido como guitarrista cuando llegó a los Yardbirds de la mano de Lord Sutch, con los que estuvo casi dos años, hasta finales de 1966.

En 1967 formó la que para mí es una de las más grandes bandas del rock de todos los tiempos, la primera formación de The Jeff Beck Group, en la que también estaban el vocalista Rod Stewart, el bajista Ron Wood, el teclista Nicky Hopkins (desde principios del 68) y Aynsley Dunbar a la batería (sustituido después por Mickey Waller).

Esta magnífica formación grabó dos discos rock blues asombrosos, Truth y Beck-Ola. Sobre todo, Truth, es una auténtica joya anterior al primer álbum de Led Zeppelin y al que no tiene nada que envidiar. El carácter errático y autodestructivo de Jeff Beck y las continuas peleas desbarataron una banda que habría podido llegar muy lejos de haber continuado. De todos modos el resultado de la marcha de Ron Wood y Rod Stewart fue otra estupenda banda, The Faces.

A partir de aquí parece que Jeff Beck empieza a deambular de un sitio para otro. Intentó crear un power trío del estilo de Cream, con Carmine Appice a la batería y Tim Bogert al bajo, pero todo esto se frustró cuando Jeff sufrió un grave accidente en 1970. La base rítmica de Vanilla Fudge se fue a Cactus y Jeff formó una nueva versión del Jeff Beck Group con el teclista Max Middleton, el batería Cozy Powell, el bajista Clive Chapman y el vocalista Bobby Tench. Grabaron Rough and Teady (1971) y Jeff Beck Group (1972) que pasaron sin pena ni gloria.

La disolución de Cactus en 1972 dio la oportunidad de crear el tan ansiado trío junto a Bogert y Appice. La formación registró un álbum en estudio y otro en directo (publicado inicialmente sólo en Japón). El resultado no convenció a nadie y el trío se disolvió.

Blow by Blow tipifica la genial carrera de Jeff Beck y lo imprevisible de sus discos. Lanzado en 1975, es su primer álbum instrumental, muy distinto del rock de sus anteriores trabajos. Solo el compositor / teclista Max Middleton había trabajado en formaciones anteriores de Beck. Blow by Blow cuenta con un tremendo nivel en los músicos que ayudaron a crearlo, desde Max Middleton, que añade calidez y emoción con sus teclados, pasando por el baterista Richard Bailey, que combina hábilmente elementos de jazz y funk, aportando una sección rítmica sólida y precisa. Los solos de Beck, variados y diversos, repletos de calidad y genialidad por igual, son el principal aliciente del álbum y en él demuestra ser un guitarrista rítmico igual de hábil. Una de las cualidades de este álbum es el sentido de la diversión que se respira en los temas, que los músicos se divertían y sentían lo que estaban haciendo. En la apertura de "You Know What I Mean", los solos de blues están llenos de formas imaginativas y saltos atrevidos. "Air Blower" contiene elaborados muros de ritmo donde van apareciendo los solos de guitarra. "Scatterbrain", con un teclado vertiginoso y líneas de guitarra repletas de energía. En la balada de Stevie Wonder "Cause We've Ended As Lovers", Beck desata suspiros, lamentos y gritos de dolor con su guitarra, en el más puro estilo de Roy Buchanan. "Freeway Jam" al igual que "Scatterbrain," son temas divertidos con impecables arreglos. El tema que cierra el álbum "Diamond Dust", otra joya perfecta y repleta de sentimiento. Blow by Blow marcó un pico creativo en la música de Jeff Beck y resultó ser un disco difícil de superar. Beck reapareció aquí rodeado de músicos geniales y entre todos lograron crear uno de los mejores discos del jazz rock, uno de esos discos imprescindibles que pasaron a la historia de la música.
