For those who have not encountered category romance before, let me tell you they could be extremely specific. My late grandmother was a big fan of the novels of Betty Neels. Neels was a prolific romance novelist whose works were published by Mills & Boon in the UK, and republished by Harlequin in the USA. They're very neat, chaste novels. Grandma loved them.

And they're virtually all about Dutch doctors.

It's a case of 'write what you know' - Neels was a nurse herself and served in the Queen Alexandra Nursing Reserve in WW2, where she met and married a Dutchman. So far so good.

In the backs of these little pink paperbacks, there were adverts for a fan club you could join, specifically to discover more romance novels about Dutch doctors.

As I say, extremely specific.

Day 12 - Hallmark movie moment

No one asked for this, so ofc I made it. I interrupted the prompt as that cheesy Hallmark moment that's overly romantic. Nothing says that more than romance novel covers from the 80's.

Below are the inspirations.

I gave Kurama a very Poccohantas "Colors of the Wind" moment. My first sketch had Hiei looking angry, but I changed it to a "wtf is going on?" look instead. You and me both man.

Chapter 11 in Early Access is finally online! ♥

Along with the new chapter (+10k words!), there are a couple of new things and some bugs I've fixed:

Fixed an error that prevented Raf's relationship bar from being displayed in the stats;

Fixed a bug when selecting the nickname "Ale" with a name other than Alessandro/Alessandra;

Made some stats visible earlier in the story;

Added optional indicators to choices;

Corrected typos in various dialogues;

Added some economic information, along with currency and/or inflation converters in the stats. Use them—they’re helpful!

I feel a factor that largely contributes to the lack of success for self published or ‘unconventional’ authors is the general readers' growing lack of appreciation for literature.

Most readers, and publishers for that matter, now only look at a book's tropes and marketability rather than the actual writing and plot. Tropes were created as something that would help us easily find the perfect read, and yet they've now become something that defines a book.

The saddest part is we've not only lost appreciation for good writing but developed an aversion to literary comprehension.

People now seek to completely cut down on description and 'painting a scene' or character development and jump straight into the action. Prose is now seen as 'boring filler chapters' while the fight--the chase, the action, are highlighted. It's like going to a museum and complaining about how old everything is.

We've become impatient, unappreciative readers who care little for the emotional nuances of a beautifully crafted scene.

The genre that is most heavily impacted by this is romance. Romance used to be such a beautiful, emotionally evocative genre and now it's just watered down to its trope. People use romance as a way to escape from reality and fantasise about fictional men, which is acceptable, sure, but by doing so they've completely forgotten how to appreciate a book and its story.

Have your dark brooding morally grey love interest but also consider what makes him so. Rather than seeking a venereal connection with the character, look for an emotional one with the book and its beautiful prose and writing.

This is also why readers nowadays often complain about 'mainstream' authors not being that talented. This isn't because there aren't any talented authors with beautifully crafted books out there, it's because you're so caught up in a book's tropes and popularity you fail to acknowledge its true beauty, because by doing so you would recognise there are many other, unappreciated, novels that deserve that platform.

C. Phasma's sixth novel sparked a lot of controversy. She was accused of copying well known author Sh'Ak E-Spearé. Turns out, the cover text was a homage. The story itself about two (very questionable) middle-aged commanders and their affair amidst the battlefield had very little in common with the royal tragedy. Mitaka was very keen on coaching her regarding press statements. Questions about the lack of clothing should be answered like "Stranded in unmapped forest territory together, bathing will demand the removal of wardrobe" . That sounded way more noble than a blunt "Ripping the clothes of each other in a feral act of heat", how Phasma would have put it. She was not sure she liked him butting in that much.. .but his editing was proper, so he got a pass on that. Hux is pretty sure that some of the lines sound familiar... and why does Mitaka look so nervous during his shifts lately?... oh no, did he READ those filthy novels?!? Worse- DID THE SUPREME LEADER?! Why does he have a potrait of himself in that style hanging suddenly?! And why did Cardinal scale down his shifts?! Why is he looking at Hux so intensely and always scribbling down something on his pad?!?!? Hux paranoia is growing stronger with every day. Especially since his lawyers have not found a single point to put an end to this. They say "Commander Hugs" is to far from "General Hux" . And what about their weird questions regarding his flexibility?!? He is furious. Leia is livid she has not been informed on these things. Of course, she looked at who the publisher is and tore Lando a new one... per holocall. Lando was very apologetic but also pointed out those novels posed a big enough distraction, to the building progress of Starkiller, which had nearly come to a standstill. ... Leia invests in Poes priorly proposed strategic distraction maneuver: A holo-movie adaption. She does NOT want anything to do with it, and who dares to show her elements, will learn what the force truly can mean. But she greenlit it. ... Poe and his squad are in hyperfocus on realizing this project asap. Finn is not sure he likes his boyfriends ambitions- until Rey shows him the casting list. He is on board immediately. .... and Kylo (seemingly) is none the wiser. Original image by Elaine Duillo.
