Headcanon; Every August 31st, the entire staff of Hogwarts gathers at the Three Broomsticks for a night out before the school year starts the next day. Without fail, they always get entirely sloshed. Severus always makes sure to brew an extra large batch of hangover cure potion to sort everyone out the next day.

Prompt 21 - Inhale

Previous part First part

It didn’t take long for there to be a battle between Remus, Sirius, James and Peter on the backs of inflatable animals. Sirius had picked a flamingo and Remus had a seal. 

“Charge!” Sirius shouted, and they all violently kicked at the water, awkwardly propelling them towards each other. Sirius’s flamingo bounced off the side of Peter’s unicorn. Somehow, Sirius’s barrage knocked Peter off-centre and his unicorn flipped over, taking Peter with it into the cool water. 

Remus had taken his eyes off James while he watched Peter roll. That had been a mistake.

“Hi,” James whispered loudly beside him and shoved him into the water. 

He broke back through the surface quickly but managed to inhale a mouthful of water as he rose. He coughed and spluttered, trying to clear his lungs. An idea popped into his head. He ducked beneath the gentle waves and disappeared from view. He could hear the frantic shouting of Sirius’s voice as he swam beneath James’s hippo. 

Silently he rose from the depths and, as he’d expected, everyone was looking at the spot he’d last been. 

“Surprise, dickhead!” He cried as he launched himself out of the water, tipping the hippo over and dumping James in the water. 

“Victory!” Sirius cheered. “Nice one, Remus!” He blew an exaggerated kiss at Remus and Remus took a bow the best he could in the water. 

They’d been the first in the water, and they were the last to leave. They’d been relaxing, floating in a circle around each other until Ms Hooch called over to them.

“Five more minutes and my shift is over, so you’ll have to get out, boys,” They swam over to the dock and hauled themselves out. 

"Let’s go get changed and head over for dinner,” James suggested, as he helped Peter out of the water. They all nodded, feeling the chill from being in the water for so long. They hurried back to the cabin as quickly as they could. Remus grabbed James’s t-shirt from the end of the dock as they walked by, realising yet again that his scars were on show and apart from Snape, no one had said a thing. Sirius took his hand and squeezed it as if he knew what was going through his mind.

"You're beautiful," He murmured into his ear. Maybe he could read Remus's mind. Remus blushed, no one had ever called any part of him beautiful, well apart from his mum.

The idea of Professor McGonagall being bisexual but only discovering that later in life, after already living a life with a husband (temporarily), then widowed, and I just imagine her looking at Hooch or Pomfrey one day and just thinking, "Merlin, they're really pretty." And then just subconsciously accepting the fact that she likes women as well then completely forgetting about it. Until she finds Marlene crying in the Quidditch changing rooms after a match, and when Marlene tells her that she's going through a rough patch with Dorcas because they need to keep their relationship kinda hidden because of the few but loud bigots. Then, to comfort her, McGonagall literally just says, "You shouldn't hide each other from the world if I had a girlfriend I wouldn't." And Marlene is like, "Wtf you like women?" When McGonagall realises what she's said herself, she freezes for a second but then nods, realising that she's been bi this whole time, but that doesn't change anything, in the same way she thinks the fact that Marlene and Dorcas both being women shouldn't mean that they can't be open about their relationship.

Snapetober 2024- Warmth

You can only go so many years in a place and still care about how you look when you do a thing. Severus Snape was no exception. After countless Quidditch matches in the freezing cold, he decided that if he truly must be present to watch his Slytherins wage war on broomsticks, he was going to at least be comfortable when doing it, hang how he looked!

And so he took a blanket from Minerva McGonagall's room. The very red, very nice Gryffindor blanket. Her favourite blanket. And it was a very nice warm blanket too.

Of course, she was absolutely going to murder him for that, but it was worth it to stay nice and warm during the match that took entirely too long.

In honour of Dame Maggie Smith, who will be forever remembered and loved, I've decided to start this blog off with one of my all time favourite Minerva McGonagall Fics.

Warnings: Cannon typical violence - pretty much what you can expect from a HP/FB related fic.

Back in 1942, the trio of McGonagall, Pomfrey and Hooch first walked the corridors together, forging friendships that would last for all their lives. They'll need all of Minerva's quick intelligence, Poppy's incredible knowledge, and Rolanda's reckless daring to get them through in one piece.

A fic I started a couple of years ago and loved. The dynamics between the three are great and there's a lot of depth to all of the characters included. While I haven't completely caught up yet, from what I remember it did focus slightly more on Minerva, which was a bonus in my eyes.

Keep in mind this is a WIP. It was last updated just over a year ago, but seeing as it's been going for almost 10 years, I have faith the author will continue it. Honestly, it's worth the read either way.

Being Albus's Deputy Headmistress was bad enough before Gilderoy Lockhart showed up…

This fic is just so fucking funny and clever and heartwarming. It's just such a warm fic - perfect to read this December with a cup of tea and snow flurries outside. The characterizations are so brilliant (Manipulative and campy Albus! A meaningful and moving Severus & Minerva friendship!), and Minerva's voice throughout the fic is so distinct and captivating and dry and hilarious.

First person point of view. Love me some older women finding love again, and what I really, really enjoyed is Andromeda's feelings about her body - as a woman who has internalised some things growing up in a family that valorised respectable pureblood marriages - settling to a healthier place within the fic.

Summary:

Andromeda takes Teddy to flying lessons so Harry doesn’t get that, too.

2. Till We Have Faces by TeddieJean

A very, very layered Andromeda, with her love for Tonks, Ted sitting at the edge of her compartmentalisation and her love for Bella, along fatalism stay as centerpiece for this narrative.

Summary:

When everything comes to a head, sometimes it's hard to tell what's inconsequential. Otherwise known as the implausible yet oddly intriguing Andromeda/Rodolphus story that I don't understand the conception of.

3. End of the Road by StarlingFlight

Starling's writing is rich with details, and you can feel the texture of each scene: the angst, the political tensions and of course, the desire.

Summary:

The beginning of a new year at Hogwarts brings tensions between its founders to boiling point.

Prompt 20 - Hippo

The jump was a lot higher than he’d realised it was, and it seemed to take forever for them to reach the water. But then he plunged through the surface and was submerged beside Sirius, still holding his hand. They stared at each other for a moment in this quiet, serene peace before they kicked up, at the same time breaking back through the surface. Remus gulped in the fresh air while Sirius crowed, lifting his arms in the air and flopping backwards, taking Remus with him. They floated side by side on the surface of the lake. 

“Eugh, gross, what’s he got all over his body?” Snape shouted from the dock, pointing his long claw-like finger at them. Remus dropped his legs, so he could sink into the water, obscuring his body from view. 

“I don’t know how you can say that to Remus, Snape. Remus looks far fitter with his kit off than you do,” James came to his defence from the back of a pink inflatable Hippo. Remus sunk below the gentle waves, his face so red it heated the surrounding water. 

Sirius yanked him back up as Peter called out from the back of his rainbow-haired unicorn. 

“Scars are cool. Do you have any idea how many people he’s been turning down since he got here? Legendary is our Remus.” The blush returned, but Sirius’s hand, now wrapped around his waist, brushing against his worst scar, kept him bobbing at the surface. 

“Mr Snape!” McGonagall's shrill voice cried from behind him. “I have never heard such foul language against another member of this camp and I have been here a great many years, as I’m sure you are aware. You will go back to your cabin and write me a 2000-word essay on why body shaming is not acceptable behaviour. You will be completing chores for the remainder of your stay here as well, and I shall be calling your parents directly.” She walked him back to his cabin before disappearing into her office to make her phone call.

“Does anyone else have a problem with Remus’s body?” Sirius glared at the remaining campers on the dock. His voice strong and loud, daring them to say yes. A sea of shaking heads. “Well alright then,” Sirius turned away from them and swam towards the slide, towing Remus along at his side. Remus heard the many splashes from the other campers entering the lake but ignored them, deciding to have some real fun for once in his life and splashed water over Sirius playfully swimming quickly away from him and beating him to the slide by quite a margin.
