OK, here my take. I never saw chapel and Spock having ever been together. I never really saw a story on Spocks end that would be as interesting as when TOS starts so the writers had to make something up.
Chapel on her own is a good character. She's nothing like TOS which is fine. I liked how she flirted with Spock is S1ep1 and spock didn't respond and that was how I thought it should stay.
I also noticed the parallel between Chapel and that guy she was hooking up with in Spock amok. He wanted a relationship and she bolted. Same as what she did with Spock.
I know I made a post about this before but my mom was really upset over it and kept saying how Spock never loved again after. Also I agree with person above, this is suppose to explain why he is so closed off. I still wish this was another universe because I saw spock as primary ace though a good part of TOS and having S1 start with Spock about to have sex with T'pring was ... not what I wanted to see.
In pretty must all novels that I've read T'pring is a villain and I kind of want it to stay that way. SNW has given up plenty of fleshed out female characters so it's not like we're lacking any more (and they improved those awful short skirts TOS had)
Anyway, the last point is how short Spock and Chapel were 'together' was it like a few weeks? And then in the last ep spock is still acting like they are together. I get that he's not over her yet but it feels like the writers were pushing for the two to be back together after she dumped him by song. (and that's the other thing, wouldn't she only be gone 3 months? If she really wanted they could have stayed together) But I guess that just makes it more tragic in that she will wait for for future fiancé for 3 years (around) and can't wait 3 months for Spock.
(side note, does anyone else think the guy they got to play Corby look a lot like the gay pirate from Our Flag Means death)
Y’all the moment when Kirk and Spock actually meet in strange new worlds is so perfect because Chapel, clearly not invested in the chess game, spent the start of the episode trying to define her newfound relationship with Spock as a situationship, even though it was the anthesis of what Spock wanted after his last relationship just blew up in his face because he wasn’t open and committed enough.
Meanwhile Kirk, watching them from a distance, wanted to engage with Spock on his terms. On his level. Playing chess. And then Spock makes the first actual move to interact because he too, wanted something equal. In that case, both of them shitting on Sam.
And they begin their relationship with a Vulcan kiss as opposed to a human one. (I know that’s not what the writers were going for but shhhh let me have my fun this is the most spirk we’re getting for at least 2 years)
What I’m getting that is despite Kirk and Spock’s love of 3D chess, their newfound relationship is a level playing field.

Coming here to rant because this is generally the place to do it.
I'm enjoying Strange New Worlds, I really am! It's got a lot of things going for it and is by far the best of the new Treks.
Here's my problem: the whole Spock/Chapel thing.
First, she's engaged. I know the writers have said they haven't forgot about Roger Corby. I have trouble wondering why she was so upset about Andrea, feels like a double standard.
Second, Spock was always portrayed as having no real interest in her. She was in love with him but it was unrequited. Even under the effect of an alien virus he showed no interest ("The Naked Time"), even under extreme duress there was nothing ("Plato's Stepchildren"). If there was anyone on that crew you could believe he was romantically attracted to, it's Uhura. Which brings me to my third point...
What happened to Spock/Uhura??? They absolutely had a spark in TOS (see "The Man Trap" and "Charlie X" for starters), I mean, the first time Spock saw Uhura after sharing his mind with a Medusan he started quoting love poetry! And besides all that there's the matter of the Kelvin-verse. Y'all, they were together for around 10 years in the Kelvin-verse. This is an alternate reality, you say? Was it really that alternate when they first got together at the Academy before they met Kirk? Aren't they basically the same characters up to that point? If two people work really, really well in one universe doesn't that technically mean they would in at least the majority of universes?
What I would have preferred SNW to do is to dig into Chapel's search for Corby, show her journey to such an extent that "What Are Little Girls Made Of" feels like a payoff, a completion to her arc.
And explore Spock/Uhura! I always thought it would be hilarious if her flirting in "The Man Trap" was echoing earlier conversations. "Why don't you tell me I'm an attractive young lady?"Sounds like a Spock pick-up line to me! "Or ask me if I've ever been in love", he already knows she has. It's just... right there. It's completely beyond me why it's ignored. If Spock is going to have a love interest make it make sense!

Request for the final season of "Strange New Worlds."
I don't want to see whole episodes remade, but I think it would be cool if there was a montage episode where half a dozen or so standout scenes from across TOS were done with the SNW cast. Finding Roger Corby, Uhura singing while Spock plays lyre to Charlie X. Kirk and Spock on Organia. McCoy instructing Khan how to properly cut a man's throat. Paul Wesley buried in Tribbles. Just one episode to give us that taste of what TOS would be like now with these folks.

"Genes go back to the 7th Ancestor"
In Egypt, we have a saying that goes like: "genes go back to the 7th ancestor", which is visualized in the photos below of modern Egyptians and their lookalikes from ancestors thousands of years ago. No DNA test needed! Or if you still need one, check the article at the end of the post!
Statue of Egyptian King Akhenaten | Egyptian Artist: Aly Al-Haggar (1954-)

Kamaal, current guardian of the tomb of Akhenaten, bears uncanny similarity to Akhenaten, as if he is his own reincarnation. His photo went viral on social media recently (March, 2024).
Statue of the Egyptian Scribe Ka-Irw-Khufu (more information in the references below) | Egyptian Actor: Rushdi Abaza (1962-1980)
Death Mask of Yuya (now in the Egyptian Museum) | Egyptian Actress: Sherihan (1964-)
Egyptian-American Celebrity: Bassem Youssef (1974-) | Statue of The Seated Scribe (4th or 5th Dynasty of Egypt, c. 2600 - 2350 BCE, from Saqqara, on display in the Louvre, Paris.)
Statue of Tutankhamun in his childhood | Modern Egyptian Child from Aswan
Statue of Vizier Sennefer (more information below) | Egyptian Actor: Khaled El-Nabawy (1966-)
Ancient Egyptian wooden statue of the Priest Kaaper (Sheikh-El-Balad who has an interesting story. Link in the references below.) | Egyptian Actor: Ahmed Rizq (1976-)
And everyone's absolute favorite, Egyptian Actress Sawsan Badr (1957-), doppelganger of Queen Nefertiti.
But Afrocentrists be like:

The Hornet's Sting: "Hornet, Save Thyself"
"HORNET, SAVE THYSELF" AIRED: MARCH 3, 1967
Britt is accused of murder after he kills a former employee in a room full of witnesses. Now, he must break ranks with Scanlon and go rogue as the Hornet in order to prove his innocence. John and Jim use this episode as an example of a point they've been making since the very beginning of the podcast, the missed potential in only making these episodes thirty minutes in length. Despite this, one of the two ranks this episode as one of the best in the series, plus Jim does a wicked impression of Roger Corby from Star Trek.
The Green Hornet: A History of Radio, Motion Pictures, Comics and Television by Martin Grams and Terry Salomonson is a reference work we're consulting as we move through the series. Pick up your copy by clicking on the link and getting it today.
Take a listen and then let us know what you think of the episode by writing us here or at [email protected].

Cinco de Mayo: How a Mexican Holiday Became a Party in the USA
The May 5 holiday honors Mexico’s victory in an 1862 battle—so how did it come to rival St. Patrick’s Day as a day of revelry in the United States?

Every year on May 5, fiesta lovers across the United States gather to celebrate the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo—literally "May 5" in Spanish. And some U.S. partygoers may be surprised to learn that Cinco de Mayo history is short on beer, long on bloodshed.
Cinco de Mayo is often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, which is actually September 16. On that date in 1810, Mexico declared its independence from Spanish rule.
Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates another Mexican army victory. Here’s what to know about the holiday—and how it became more widely celebrated in the U.S. than it is in Mexico.
The Origins of Cinco de Mayo: The Battle of Puebla
Cinco de Mayo traces its origins to the Mexican army’s unlikely defeat of far better equipped French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
Emperor Napoleon III had sent French troops to Mexico to secure dominance over the former Spanish colony and install one of his relatives, Archduke Maximilian of Austria, as its ruler. Led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, a Mexican militia raced to fortify the city of Puebla against the advancing French troops.
Zaragoza won the battle, but the Mexicans ultimately lost the war. Maximilian became Mexico's emperor for three years before the country reclaimed its independence.

How Cinco de Mayo Became a U.S. Holiday
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated only sporadically in Mexico, mainly in the southern town of Puebla and a few larger cities.
However, Cinco de Mayo rapidly gained popularity in the U.S., where changing demographics have helped to turn the holiday into a cultural event. Latinos are the largest minority in the U.S. today with 62.1 million people, representing 18.9 percent of the population, according to 2020 Census data.
Cinco de Mayo gained its first popularity in the U.S. in the 1950s and 1960s, partly because of an outpouring of brotherly love, José Alamillo, who was then a professor of ethnic studies at Washington State University, told National Geographic in 2006.
"The reason it became more popular was in part because of the Good Neighbor policy," he said, referring to a U.S. government effort at the time to reach out to neighboring countries.
"Cinco de Mayo's purpose was to function as a bridge between these two cultures," Alamillo said.

The holiday's popularity really grew in the 1960s, when Mexican-American, or Chicano, activists embraced the holiday as a way to build pride among Mexican Americans, Alamillo says.
The 1862 Cinco de Mayo victory carries a strong anti-imperialist message that resonates with many Mexican Americans, experts say.
"As a community, we are tough and committed, and we believe that we can prevail," said Robert Con Davis-Undiano, a professor of Chicano studies at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. "That was the attitude of the ragtag Mexican troops who faced and defeated the French in Puebla.”
At the same time, Cinco de Mayo was transformed from a strictly nationalist celebration to a bicultural event that expressed Mexican Americans identity, Alamillo said.
"It allowed for Anglo-Americans to partake in and learn about Mexican culture through Cinco de Mayo," Alamillo said. "Mexican Americans by this point were interested in building this relationship, because they were asking for certain political demands and for more resources for the community.
"It became a really interesting negotiation festival in a lot of ways."

How Cinco de Mayo is Celebrated Today
Then came the 1980s, and the commercialization of Cinco de Mayo.
This, Alamillo said, is when the meaning of Cinco de Mayo changed from community self-determination to a drinking holiday for many people.
He says U.S. corporations, particularly those selling alcohol, were eager to tap into the expanding Hispanic population in the U.S.
"It's not just the large number of the Hispanics but also that it's a very young population that is particularly receptive to advertisers," Alamillo said. “Cinco de Mayo became a vehicle to tap into that market.”
Today, most Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo by indulging in a glut of tacos, tequila, and beer. In fact, in recent years Cinco de Mayo beer sales have outpaced both St. Patrick’s Day and the Super Bowl.
But many communities still do honor the holiday with festivals, parades, and other events honoring the richness of Mexican-American culture and heritage.
