The Two-State Dissolution: Yankevich, Kenny, Helweg-Larsen, Foster, Vaughan, Jackson, Galef, Bales, Burch
Leo Yankevich: ‘The Terrorist’ Only six, she stands before a tank, looking at its armour, while inside soldiers heed orders from a higher rank. There isn’t any place for her to hide, no door to head for, no abandoned car to slide beneath. Pure terror rules her land. When finally crushed, she rises past the star of David, with a stone clutched in her hand. Janet Kenny: ‘Didn’t They Know?’(In…

An upcoming 18+ fantasy interactive fiction with a focus on Romance.
As the Assistant to Professor of Magic and Alchemy Simeon Harrow you have a particular interest in the mystical. When you’re not meddling with magical ingredients or delving into taboo history, you’re helping Professor Harrow with his quest to harness real magic.
When witches are spotted in your city a literal witch hunt begins. It’s said a witch’s heart can give pure magic to whoever consumes it, but just how true could that possibly be?
Customise your character! Gender, height, sexuality and more.
Learn magic, uncover secrets, and protect a young witch child from those that wish him harm.
Befriend and ally with a cast of characters. Romance one (or two) of four: your academic rival, an energetic witch, a morally questionable salesman, or ▮▮▮.
Consume a witch’s heart?
Characters
Yousra/Youcef ‘Court’ Courtney
(Gender Selectable RO)
Harrow’s other assistant. Noble blood, less noble intentions, but at least they’re good at what they do.
With a razor-sharp focus and an overbearing personality they excel at almost everything they do. Always impeccably dressed with sharp features and eyes that watch you like a hawk when they think you’re not looking. They consider you their closest friend, but that’s never made them any less willing to throw you under the bus when they think it will let them win.
Professor Simeon Harrow
He made you what you are, he gave you what no one else could, and he could take away everything you have.
Harrow’s ambition has faded in recent years, with very few people willing to fund his research. This recent stroke of luck could be just what his career needs.
Killian MacKay
His father was a witch, and that’s all he knows. A powerful bargaining chip and a useful tool.
The boy’s power has only recently awoken and he isn’t sure who he can trust yet, can he trust you?
Lillias ‘Lily’ Keene
(F RO)
A young witch, lost in an unfamiliar city. Perhaps less naïve than she lets on.
She’s here for a reason, one she isn’t keen on sharing. There’s a mischievous spark in her sandy grey eyes and she’s reluctant to let the mortal danger that she’s in ruin her fun.
‘Robin’
(M RO)
A dealer of magical paraphernalia. When he isn’t conducting barely-legal business he’s off enjoying the finer things in life.
It’s hard to tell if you’ll get him in a good mood or a bad one, but whichever way you find him it’s clear he’s not your biggest fan. Unfortunately for him you’ve got the money to pay for his services.

The Drakes Spoiled Brat playlist :)
My ramblings for each song below- (Also feel free to share any recs)
Oh No! (MARINA)- This is legitimently the perfect trash Tim song, it outlines all his motivations and the entire vibe of "Oh this is so fucked up- but hes doing it to himself" prophecy of his death and all.
Flight of the Crows (Jhariah)- The entire vibe of "Im being welcomed but I don't belong here, not anymore and maybe never" Tim is the literal personification of "flight" as a fear response and begging his family to forget him for good.
Nobody(Mitski)- Tim being so isolated while surrounded by people, but its "for the greater good" right? If he wants too much he could ruin everything. And yet he still longs for that connection even for just a moment. But for now there is nobody-
Colors(Hasley)- I can assign meaning to every little lyric I swear to god. (Your little brother never tells you but he loves you so??? perfection) It isn't even exclusive to this AU just the entire characterization of Tim as someone who has been through so much and lost so much more and goes on anyways.
United in Grief(Kendrick Lamar)- Honestly i'm just bias towards this strong. But also the beginning of desperate "Tell them the truth" only to be cut off. Add on the entire vibe of living in the lap of luxury but finding no joy in it all other than temporary. "28 years young" as well just AHH-
Teen Idle(MARINA)- Tim lost his childhood not once but twice- the first time because he became Robin, and this time because he was the only one who could "save them". Does he regret it? No. But theres moments where hes Alan or Timothy and he forgets about everything else, for just a little bit.
Gasoline(Hasley)- Timmy gets a little mental breakdown as a treat <33 He knows how people see Timothy Drake, and he embraces the role out of nessisity- but acting as someone who you hate weighs to the point its hard to feel real isn't it?
I Cant Fix you (The Living Tombstone)- (Im a sucker for FNAF songs okay???) BUT ANYWAYYSS- Tim has fixed so so much and saved so many more, but he continuines to "fail" there continuies to be people he cant save and it weighs on him only pushing him further to self sacrifice.
Brother(Murder by Death)- His song to his family "Your stories are all the asme but the ends have all changed" by changing their fate hes changed THEM (less trauma does that Timmy) but there are still some things distinctly them.
Passing Through(Kaden MacKay)- Tim is fighting against time itself and a predetermined fate that he's desperate to do what he can and finally see the day he turns 18. Or well- if that isnt his destiny, to change what he can in the meantime.

May is quickly shaping up to be one of the biggest months for new comic book releases in a long time. Marvel alone is going all-out this month, kicking off the massive Blood Hunt crossover and celebrating the milestone 50th issue of The Amazing Spider-Man with the return of Spidey's greatest nemesis. Elsewhere, DC has big stories planned for two of Batman's most important sidekicks, while Image is launching several promising new projects like The Whisper Queen and Grommets.
Read on to see all the biggest comics of May 2024, and be sure to let us know in the comments what you'll be reading this month.
Blood Hunt
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Jed MacKay & Pepe Larraz
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: May 1
As is tradition for Marvel, the first week of May brings with it the start of a major summer crossover event. Blood Hunt pits the Avengers and other assorted heroes against a resurgent vampire nation. For the first time, the many vampire tribes of the Marvel Universe are united under a common cause, and that's bad news for the human world. Expect some major heroes to be turned to the undead as this massive war unfolds.
Blood Hunt will unfold in the pages of the core miniseries by Jed MacKay and Pepe Larraz, but expect a lot of tie-ins to accompany that book. Most of Marvel's Avengers and Spider-Man-adjacent books will tie into the event, and several new limited series will also launch aside the main book.
Get Fury #1
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Garth Ennis & Jacen Burrows
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: May 1
Garth Ennis doesn't often write for the Big Two publishers, but we're always excited when he does. That's especially true whenever Ennis delves into the grim and gritty world of Marvel's MAX imprint. Get Fury brings together Nick Fury and Frank Castle, arguably the two characters on which Ennis has left his greatest mark. In this Vietnam War-era story, Fury is captured by the enemy, leaving the military to dispatch Frank to bring him back by any means necessary. We're getting strong Apocalypse Now vibes from this book, which can only be a good thing.
The Whisper Queen #1
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Chip Zdarsky & Kris Anka
Publisher: Image
Release Date: May 1
It's hard to go wrong with a creative pairing like writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Kris Anka, and we're big fans of their work on The White Trees. At long last, the two are reuniting for a new story set in the Blacksand fantasy universe. In The Whisper Queen, a former assassin named Javro must hunt down the king's killers before her son is murdered by a ghostly threat known as the Dark Whisper.
The Boy Wonder #1
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Juni Ba
Publisher: DC
Release Date: May 7
DC's newest Black Label series comes from Monkey Meat creator Juni Ba. The Boy Wonder aims to present a fresh spin on the origin of Batman's son, Damian Wayne, and his rise as Robin. In this limited series, Damian is forced to confront the realization that he isn't Batman's first Robin and embrace the idea that he's part of a legacy bigger than himself. It sounds like a great primer for the character, and a worthwhile read for anyone who simply craves more of Damian's crimefighting adventures.
Doom #1
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Sanford Greene & Jonathan Hickman
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: May 15
Jonathan Hickman's latest Marvel epic is quite the deviation from books House of X and G.O.D.S. In Doom #1, Hickman teams with Bitter Root's Sanford Greene for a very different take on the Fantastic Four's most iconic foe. This oversizedone-shot is set in the future, as Doom takes it upon himself to defend Earth from a ravenous Galactus. Can his mighty ego stand up to one of the most powerful forces in the Marvel Universe? We're about to find out.
Nightwing #114
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Tom Taylor & Bruno Redondo
Publisher: DC
Release Date: May 21
DC just celebrated the 300th issue of Nightwing, and now they're speeding straight ahead into one of the most important chapters of Dick Grayson's costumed career. This issue kicks off "Fallen Grayson," a story arc that explores what happens when Dick loses his ability to leap. Can he still be Nightwing when his city needs him the most? This is the climax of Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo's excellent run, so it's definitely a bittersweet moment for fans of what has easily been one of the best superhero comics on the stands.
The Amazing Spider-Man #50
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Zeb Wells, Marv Wolfman, Nikesh Shukla & Various Artists
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: May 22
Thecurrent volume of The Amazing Spider-Man reaches the all-important issue #50 mark this month, and it's shaping up to be a big one. This oversized issue features several new stories, including new material from guest creators like Marv Wolfman and Terry Dodson.
But the real news is that ASM #50 features the return of the Green Goblin. For years now, Norman Osborn has tried to prove that he's reformed and can be a crucial ally to Peter Parker rather than his worst nightmare. That all seems to be at an end, as Osborn becomes consumed by his sins once again. But is this simply a return to the status quo for Osborn, or do Zeb Wells and Ed McGuinness have another big twist in store? Hopefully we'll find out in issue #50.
Blood Squad Seven #1
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Joe Casey & Paul Fry
Publisher: Image
Release Date: May 22
Superhero deconstruction stories are nothing new in comics, but it's not often that we see them directed at the bombastic, gritty heroes of the '90s comic book explosion. That's what Joe Casey and Paul Fry aim to do with Blood Squad Seven. This new series focuses on a team of former superhero celebrities who flamed out after the '90s, leaving a new generation to try and take up the mantle in 2024. We're expecting a book that both pays loving tribute to the '90s and skewers the more over-the-top aspects of the era, and it should be loads of fun.
Grommets #1
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Rick Remender, Brian Posehn & Brett Parson
Publisher: Image
Release Date: May 29
We're immediately on board for any new project from Rick Remender, but this one looks especially intriguing. Grommets pairs Remender with comedian Brian Posehn and Tank Girl artist Brett Parson for a limited series steeped in 1980's skateboard culture and punk rock. The series is both a throwback to that bygone era and a timeless story of two Gen-X outcasts who find a new home in this scene.
Fall of the House of X Finale
Tumblr media
Creative Team: Various
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: Various
We all knew the X-Men's Krakoan Age had to come to an end sooner or later, and that finale is now close at hand. May marks the end of both Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X, capping off a journey that began way back in 2019's House of X and Powers of X. Will the X-Men finally triumph over Orchis? What sort of future will there be for mutantkind when all is said and done?
May also marks the end of both the current volume of Wolverine and the Immortal X-Men epilogue X-Men Forever. We'll see Logan leap into his latest and bloodiest battle with Sabretooth in Wolverine #50, while X-Men Forever #4 promises to close out with even more startling revelations about Krakoa and its survivors. All of this paves the way for Marvel's X-Men: From the Ashes relaunch in July.

“‘Money? It’s the oh-so-simple miracle that allows you to take home veal in your shopping bag…’, the Trader-Knights repeat, forgetting that behind the head of veal or the pork cutlet there is a futures market in livestock and pork bellies, and that behind that market looms the futures market of exchange rates, interest rates and so many other levels all the way down to absolute volatility, all utterly inaccessible to those bit-part players in the great comedy of trading, the small individual shareholders…”

14, 17 and 68? 🥰💜
From a different ask meme, this one about fanfic writing:
14. What is your favorite location and position to write in?
Sigh. This is actually something of a frustration. My favourite location and position by far to write in are a particular coffeeshop near where I used to work, in the corner seat by the windows; I'd go there three or four times a week for a couple of hours before work to write. I wrote many fics and an entire (unpublished) novel there over a decade. But then long covid happened and I'm no longer ever in that area of town, or usually in town at all. So these days, on my couch with my lap desk and laptop. It's a LOT harder to work at home than in coffeeshops, unfortunately, there's always something else that needs doing (feels like I'm in a 3D representation of my to-do list), but it's the best I can do. Damn I miss that coffeeshop so much. (I try to get out to have writing sessions in other coffeeshops when I can but usually do not have the spoons)
17. Do you have a writing routine?
Get a mocha. Get comfy, but not too comfy or I'll fall asleep. Put on headphones to block out distractions. Put on whatever background music works for whatever I'm currently writing. (this can vary, from classical music to one pop song or another on endless repeat, usually something that has an emotional connection to what I'm writing but which doesn't demand attention). Works best when someone else is nearby also working on something (partner works from home, which helps). Go for as long as I can until something happens or brainfog takes over.
68. Are there any fics that influenced you to write the way you do?
Huh, I'm genuinely not sure. I think my writing style in general has been influenced a lot by Robin McKinley, Patricia Wrede, and Janis Mackay, plus a very Pratchettean tendency towards footnotes. If my fics remind you of someone else's fics/writing please say so, I'd be very curious to know. Thanks @foolishlovers!

Unnecessary throwback, I just reread The Wind that Cuts the Night AGAIN (one of my faves) and I think about this every time i do, are there any authors or books in particular that influence your writing style? Because the vibes are impeccable in this fic and it’s something that makes me wonder about any inspiration you may have had <3
Hi anon!
I have read literally thousands of books, and I think every single one of them - especially the ones I've loved - have all influenced my writing style a little. From non-fiction to fiction.
There's definitely no single writer I want to emulate, because I pretty much never find exactly what I want to read out there. It's more like I find moments, and then I think 'oh I want to make a reader feel the way this writer made me feel right now' but that doesn't necessarily mean I want to write in their style? Or if it does, it will still be influenced by all the other things that have influenced me in the past.
*thinks* I've read so many authors it's almost impossible to single out the ones I love the most re: writing style, but here's a few: Ursula K. Le Guin, dgalerab on AO3, Robin Hobb (though I feel like I've aged out of her writing now), CS Pacat, Suzanne Clarke, Bill Bryson, Robert Holdstock, Mark Z. Danielewski, Asumiko Nakamura, Andrea Gibson, Martha Wells (particularly re: Murderbot), Hinako Takanaga, Chuuya Nakahara, John Fowles, Orson Scott Card (for all that he's a bigot homophobic dickhead), Sarah Monette / Katherine Addison, Alan Ball, Mike Schur, Brian Jacques, Cecilia Dart-Thornton, Dan Harmon, Randall Jarrell, Thomas Harris, Yana Toboso, Ono Natsume, Kim Dare, Moto Hagio, Scott Heim, Gerald Durrell, Tanith Lee, George Mackay Brown, early Lyn Gala, early Sidney Bell, early Roan Parrish, Ann-Marie MacDonald, William Goldman, a bunch of classic authors and poets that we don't have time for, Tamora Pierce, Philip Pullman, and like...more fic authors I'm forgetting, lol.
(There's a mix in here, including fic writers, poets, essayists, scriptwriters and novelists).
(Also I am under no illusions that I am anywhere as good as any of these writers, they're just the ones whose styles really inspire me. Except I know I'm missing like 100 others and that's going to annoy me, lmao, I am okay with being mediocre, when I have this greatness to aspire to).
(For all the people who've ever asked me to rec some stuff, there you go, there's the list sdalkfjas).
(For anyone who thinks my writing is good, all I can say is read broadly, widely, across genres, across mediums, it's the best way to improve what you do. Though I'm mad as fuck that the list doesn't have more POC in it. I need to read far more broadly).
(Anon I'm SO glad you enjoy that fic! It was such an indulgent little story :D)

I haven't made a real list, but since I spend all my time reading comics here's a top ten for 2022. (no particular order) First up is Kyle Starks' I Hate This Place. Kyle is always the best and a couple inheriting a farm only to find out it's haunted by ghosts/aliens/demons/cyptids/everything is a great hook.
Tumblr media
Next up is the new Amazing Spider-Man series that brings back writer Zeb Wells and artist John Romita Jr. They're two of the best to ever do Spider-Man and as they tend to do they drag him through the mud along the way.
Tumblr media
Adjacent to Spider-Man is Jed Mackay doing more Black Cat stories. He's writing the Moon Knight, Black Cat, and Dr Strange series and has proven to be one of the best and most prolific writers in the Marvel bullpen. Here's a bit from Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond.

Too bad for Jed but this was the year Chip Zdarsky hit homer after home with so many great series. Daredevil, Stillwater, Public Domain, and two Batman series that are all comic of the year level. It's been crazy watching the comedy guy known for Sex Criminals become the most prized writer at the big two. Nobody but Chip gets to write Batman and work for Marvel at the same time.

I've been going on and on about writers but the recent Poison Ivy series is all about artist Marcio Takara. I normally wouldn't give a series like this a chance but it's a beautiful horror comic where a lot of folks get torn apart by fungal spores.
Tumblr media
I also wouldn't have touched a Harley Quinn series but Riley Rossmo's art will get me to read anything. He just started a new Robin series where Tim Drake is living in a boat house and working as a private eye. So far so good!

I don't care about the Eternals or Avengers and keeping up with the X-Men is exhausting but the A.X.E. Judgement Day event was great. Basically the superheroes create a new god and it decides to judge everyone on earth individually. If it does the math and we're mostly bad the earth goes bye bye. Captain America is the first to get a thumbs down and everyone collectively goes "oh so we're fucked right?" Then when the Eternals wake up some old war machines one reads the whole internet and becomes the secret admirer of a single human writer.

As I said X-Men is exhausting, but it was worth it to get all the jokes in X-Men '92 House of XCII which retells the last few years of X-Men comics as if they were adapted to the 90s cartoon.

A much clearer X-Men comic was Giant-Size X-Men: Thunderbird. He was the first X-Man to die for the cause and now that mutants can be resurrected he's back and not sure he wants to be a part of it anymore. It's co-written by trans native-american pro wrestler Nyla Rose and I was expecting very little but it's great.

Guess this is my last one. I have been shocked by how good the Punisher: King of Killers series is. Writer Jason Aaron and artists Jeus Saiz & Paul Azaceta bounce between two art styles & times. The present where Frank Castle is worshipped as history's greatest killer by ninja assassin cult, The Hand, and the past where we discover he first killed at age 10 and how his family dying was never what made him the Punisher. It's also an allegory about how The Punisher isn't cool and you shouldn't like him and anyone who would use his skull logo unironically is dumb.

Sorry TMNT Armageddon Game, One-Star Squadron, Superman The Warworld Saga, X-Terminators, My Bad, Billionaire Island: Cult of Dogs, World's Finest, and everyone else from this year but I've run out of time and space. Look forward to Spider-Man/X-Men Dark Web on next year's list alongside both of Ryan North's new comics Secret Invasion and Fantastic Four.

“A maximal fluidity propagating mimetism like gangrene, a confusion of mobility with the dubious ‘nomadism’ of ‘temporary gigs’ and part-time, expedient solidarities, of the camaraderie of bare survival—such are the characteristics of the ‘new civil society’ that serves equilibrium alone, orchestrated by a thermodynamic vision of politico-economics. Thus it would be no exaggeration here to speak of a thermo-civil society, or, better, a thermocracy, dictating the everyday lives of millions of average men, consumer-panelist Robinsons, distant descendants of Hobbes’s Robinsons pompously saluted as the prototypes of postmodernity, finally freed from all ‘great expectations’ and all ‘grand narratives’.”
— Gilles Châtelet, To Live and Think Like Pigs: the Incitement of Envy and Boredom in Market Democracies, trans. Robin Mackay (1998)
