José’s full name is José Roberto Madrigal.

His first name means “add”, and his middle name means “fame”. 

He is the second adopted child of Camilo Madrigal and Marcos Vasquez.

He has straight black hair, brown skin, and brown eyes. 

He is nine years old.

He has two biological brothers, Hugo, older by five years, and Héctor, younger by three.

He is currently uninterested in romance and sex.

His gift is extreme good luck. Everything seems to go right for him. He, of course, uses it to illegally gamble and make bets. Camilo and Marcos only make him return his winnings sometimes.

His door portrays him grinning, and he is flipping a coin with his right hand, with his left in his pocket.

The first part of his room looks like a billiard room, with a pool table, a bar—sans alcohol obviously—a piano and other instruments, and a stage. His bed and other amenities are actually in an adjacent room off to the side, and that room looks like a normal bedroom, with purple walls, and a wood floor.

His symbol is a coin, mid flip.

He and Camilo get along great, and Camilo is actually the one most likely to encourage José’s money-making schemes. As long as he uses his powers for good (or fun.)

Marcos is the one who brings José (and Camilo) back down to earth, and hits them with a hearty dose of humility. It won’t be until José gets older, but he does really appreciate Marcos for that.

His birth parents were very neglectful of him and his brothers, before they died when he was three, so he almost has no memory of them. 

Hugo raised José more than their parents did, so no matter what the Encanto says about him, José is both loving and protective towards him. They have a special bond that no one else is privy to.

He and Héctor are closer in age, and José tries to be for Héctor what Hugo was for him; a stabilizing force and a role model. Not a good role model, but one nonetheless.

He hangs out with Avila, Amada, Tomás, Rómulo, Mariana, and Zoe, but his best friend is Carlos, despite the age difference.

He gets along best with Pepa, Isabela, and Carlos.

He loves close up magic, and is very good at it. He carries a deck of cards with him everywhere.

He’s very good at spotting con artists, because they are always the most surprised when he actually beats their games.

He’s a wannabe musician, and can play piano, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and the accordion.

He’s saving up his winnings to leave the Encanto and find his fortune in the city.

He’s very mature for his age, mainly because he has to be smart about gambling and making bets, especially with adults.

His favorite colors are purple, red, pink, and black.

Avila really is just a mess of a character, though. He’s a terrible father (but his son *is* total dud with zero personality so—), terrible husband (poor Maria is clearly losing it and good old Roberto is doing exactly nothing to help her), and as for his job(s) his heart doesn’t really seem into those either. It’s not that he’s boring - it’s that he is bored.

The best scenes are the ones where he’s rolling around on the floor covered in blood. He seems to come alive for a minute and it’s 😵‍💫

I feel like there was a real missed opportunity here if they were wanting to humanise Avila a bit (and I mean maybe they aren't he's an awful human and maybe that's the point).

When he found out his mistress was dead and he was devastated and brought the bracelet to give to his wife (dog move but anyway moving past that) there was a moment where I thought he might show even the tiniest bit of vulnerability to his wife and let her comfort him like he didn't have to become a blubbering mess but just something to cut through the assholery and be like 'there's some humanity in here' but no. He was just like gives gift, tight jaw, end ep.
