Problem Child (1990)
Tumblr media
Problem Child is the kind of film that inspires theological discussions. A comedy this unfunny either proves there is a God because Satan exists and releases movies under the guise of Dennis Dugan, or proves there is no God because he would never allow such a calamity to befall his children.
A troublemaker from birth, Junior (Michael Oliver) has been adopted and abandoned more times than anyone could count. When kind-natured Benjamin “Ben” Healy Jr. (John Ritter) and his socialite wife, Florence “Flo” Healy (Amy Yasbeck) learn they cannot have children, they adopt the boy. Trouble soon ensues.
It should be enough for me to tell you Problem Child isn’t funny but having survived this harrowing experience, I must say more. I must explain WHY it’s so unfunny. I’ll begin with Michael Oliver as Junior. Child actor or not, he’s awful. None of his lines sound credible and he’s completely devoid of charisma. Witnessing him do one awful thing after another to people who don’t deserve it causes you to loathe him only seconds in. You hate his voice, his would-be smart aleck comments, his choices and actions. You even hate his stupid little face. What worse is how the character is handled. Problem Child can’t decide whether we’re supposed to like Junior or not. We’re presumably supposed to laugh at the misfortune he brings others when setting the Healy house aflame, sabotaging a birthday party, luring a bear to a campsite, attacking children with a baseball bat (cue the nut shots), stealing a car, and generally being a rusty, spiral-shaped turd. In the next scene, he overhears someone talking about how awful he is and sad music kicks in. Which one is it?! Am I supposed to sympathize for Junior, or hope his adopted parents go at him with a chainsaw? You can’t have it both ways!
Anyone who gives Junior the moment of day is repulsive by association. John Ritter as the father is an unbearable wet noodle. The film is so mean-spirited you kind of want him to wind up crushed beneath a collapsed building or skewered by a stray harpoon. The idea that, in time, he and Junior will bond makes you want to throw up. Since he makes your blood boil too now, you'd expect to like his harpy of a wife but her character is just as irritating. She wants a kid so she can go to her neighbors’ parties. I’ve been to children’s birthday parties. Unless you’re participating, they suck. Her motivation makes no sense but why should it? Nothing makes sense in this film. Junior’s sending fan letters to serial killer Martin “Bow-Tie Killer” Beck (Michael Richards), who shows up towards the climax as a way to wrap up a plot that’s had no direction previously. Instead of ending in Dugan's signature false sentimentality, maybe there’s some version of the film that ends in a blood bath. Get me that fan cut.
Up until its very last shot, Problem Child single-handedly annihilates the words “classy” and “funny”. The only good thing about this supposed comedy is that eventually, it ends. (On VHS, April 7, 2020)

Tom Bergeron on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson
What a blast to sit down again with the just honored inaugural recipient of The Sam Rubin Award from The Critics Choice Association and Emmy-Winner, Tom Bergeron. The humble humanitarian was as funny and feisty as ever regaling us with one show biz gold story after another and commanding us to Google what he deemed unworthy of repeating (why he left the “dancing show”). He actually scooped it on this very show almost two years ago to the day.
We started with Tom’s current FLiRT with COVID, other than some residual fatigue, in under two weeks, thankfully, it’s in the rear-view. His daily routine, well, most of it anyway, and how structure affords him freedom. We talked his and Lois’s favorite and current binges, Midsomer Murders and The Veil, for two, and favorite people. Carl Reiner, how they met, and how their friendship developed, likewise, Dick Van Dyke, and William Shatner… or Bill, as he calls him, with whom he has a show optioned - oh please let it get made so we get to be a fly on their snarky friendship wall! He told a great story about Mel Brooks and Bill Cullen.
We talked his early years - high school - as a DJ - interviewing Larry Fine and Moe Howard and surprising and delighting his classmates. His crush on “my nun,” and his surprise many years later. Getting a morning show, and then, a weekly children’s TV show, which ultimately led to…Hollywood Squares - fabulous stories about Whoopi, Simon, Gilbert! Sad sweetness about his America’s Funniest Home Videos compadre, Bob Saget, and losing John Ritter.
Tom mostly slid over “the dancing show” this go-‘round, other than his extreme gratitude and readiness after 15 years to be done with it. He said he’s done with hosting - but admits, you never know if the exact right thing were to come along… but, he’s enjoying retirement. For now. He’s writing, a novel… about 500 words a day, and he likes his characters… who knows what’ll come. I’m putting my money on that Shatner/Bergeron bromantic comedy! Come on boys, with the state of the world, we could sure use the laughs.
I adore this man, touched to the core that he remembered my Samantha when talking about his. They’re both getting married. Mazel Tovs all around! Here’s to friends who show up every two years and always bring their A game. I’ll be smiling for days.

There are few things so intrinsically linked with old-fashioned British culture as the red telephone box.
These became synonymous with paths all over the country during the 20th century, but inevitably, the introduction of mobile phones led to its decline from the 1980s onwards.
After decades of abandonment - with many boxes left in a derelict state - action is being taken by a local restoration company that set up the nation's largest 'telephone box graveyard' in Merstham in Surrey.
Unicorn Restorations proudly restore these iconic boxes back to their former glory following a period of them rusting away.
Staff spend up to 30 hours stripping each old kiosk, repainting them in the identical shades of red once stipulated by the General Post Office, and putting in new glass to complete the look, at the site just outside Redhill.
Once rejuvenated, they sell for a variety of prices ranging from just under £4,000 to as much as £20,000, with the price being higher for the older designs.
These include the three classic models of red telephone kiosk: the K2, the K6 and the K8.
The K6, which was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V's coronation in 1935, is largely identified as THE red telephone box.
60,000 examples of these were installed across Britain, which is why the K6 has come to represent what many regard as the typical red phone box.
Tumblr media
The K2 is deemed as the original phone box having been created in 1926, while the K8 was introduced in 1968 and was a radical change to suit the mood of the Sixties in a more futuristic design.
This was the last of the red kiosks to be produced and very few are in service.
The restoration experts are also able to redesign the interior of these kiosks and offer the ability to personalise the dial centre to carry your current number, but with the old exchange or with a memorable number from the past.
As stated on their website, they supplied the landmarks that you see across the UK and the heart of London such as in Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, The Tower of London and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
They also carried out many prestigious kiosk restorations for BT, The Corporation of London and English Heritage.

Their handiwork has even been showcased on the big screen, having supplied period pieces for film and TV productions such as Harry Potter, Paddington and the John Lewis Christmas adverts.
The necessity for these landmarks may have become non-existent in the modern era, but it's perhaps reassuring to know that they're going on to enjoy a second life.
During a 2016 interview with the Daily Mail, photographer Nicolas Ritter stated how he visited the yard back when he was just starting out as an assistant in 2012.
He said:
"Being at the telephone graveyard was a great experience for me. It felt like a journey back into the history of the country as the phone boxes are such a unique symbol of British culture."

These easily-spotted, brightly coloured boxes were once adored by Brits; by the time the 1980s rolled around, there were more than 73,000 dotted around.
Sadly, those numbers started to dwindle shortly after, with just 21,000 reported to be left standing today.
Thanks to Unicorn Restorations, though, it's clear to see that British people still have a great fondness for the old-fashioned phone box - just maybe not for their original, intended purpose.

Tangled Crew Appreciation Week: Let’s Talk About Storyboards
There are two jobs when it comes to storyboards: storyboard artist and storyboard revisionist. Storyboards are a sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue, representing the shots planned for a movie or television production. The still of Rapunzel above was provided by @t-caulfield (Tom Caulfield). Storyboards can, of course, also be presented as animatics, such as the one of Varian above, provided by @kritterart (Kait Ritter).
There are a lot, and I mean a lot of storyboard crew working on TTS. These are the folks who take the script and turn it into something visual. Even live action movies have storyboard artists while they’re figuring out their shots. It’s a very important step between writing the story and seeing it fully animated on screen.
The following are storyboard artists and revisionist, some of whom are also the directors, who are working or have worked on Tangled: Before Ever After and Tangled: the Series:
@heidijogilbert (Heidi Jo Gilbert), James Suhr, @wendydoodles (Wendy Sullivan), @catharman92 Cat Harman, Casey Coffey, Naomi Hicks, Shane Zalvin, @dadastudios (David Au), @kritterart (Kait Ritter), Bosook Coburn, Sebastien Duclos, @t-caulfield (Emmy Award Winning Tom Caulfield), @benbalistreri (Ben Balistreri), Hillary Bradfield, @artistssandoval (Stephen Sandoval), @joeoh1771 (Joe Oh), and @banannerbread (Anna Lencioni) who began her work with season two!
