Trees 雑木林図屏風, mid 17th century
Master of I-nen Seal (1600-1630), Rinpa School
Edo period, Japan
Ink, color and gold on paper
H x W: 154 x 357.8 cm (60 5/8 x 140 7/8 in)
At least eight varieties of trees have been identified in the screens F1962.30-31, reflecting a growing interest at that time among educated Japanese in natural history classification. Yet even with careful attention to botanical accuracy, the painter offers no suggestion of spatial relationship between the trees. Indeed, the real subject of the painting is jarring contrast: realism in form but not space, dramatic asymmetry, and bold color contrast. The circular vermilion seals, reading "I'nen" and seen on the extreme left and right panels of this screen set, were used by the Kyoto painter Tawaraya Sotatsu (active circa 1600-1640) and by several generations of his followers. Sotatsu's follower, Sosetsu (active 1630-50) is a strong candidate as the user of these "I'nen" seals. He migrated from Kyoto to serve Lord Maeda, head of the family who ruled Kaga Province, north of Kyoto; these screens were likely commissioned for the Maeda family. Kamisaka Sekka (神坂 雪佳, 1866–1942) was an important artistic figure in early twentieth-century Japan. Born in Kyoto to a samurai family, his talents for art and design were recognised early. He eventually allied himself with the traditional Rinpa school of art. He is considered the last great proponent of this artistic tradition. Sekka also worked in lacquer and in a variety of other media.
As traditional Japanese styles became unfashionable (such as Rinpa style), Japan implemented policies to promote the country's unique artistic style by upgrading the status of traditional artists who infused their craft with a dose of modernism. In 1901, Sekka was sent by the Japanese government to Glasgow where he was heavily influenced by Art Nouveau. He sought to learn more about the Western attraction to Japonism, and which elements or facets of Japanese art would be more attractive to the West. Returning to Japan, he taught at the newly opened Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, experimented with Western tastes, styles, and methods, and incorporated them into his otherwise traditional Japanese-style works. While he sticks to traditional Japanese subject matter, and some elements of Rinpa painting, the overall effect is very Western and modern. He uses bright colors in large swaths, his images seeming on the verge of being patterns rather than proper pictures of a subject; the colors and patterns seem almost to "pop", giving the paintings an almost three-dimensional quality.

Artbook Rei...you can find her in my NSFW artbook-in-progress A Chaotic Garden, which will be released sometime late this year or early next year.
Tonight
You will die in my arms
And I will scatter you among the stars
Where you will lay in ecstasy
Each breath is my name upon your lips
I was very inspired by Edo period Japan, in particular the Rinpa school of art (which I have always loved) both in the background and the calligraphy, and the geisha/oiran traditional makeup style. The kimono idea came from an old fanfiction I read eons ago where Jadeite gifted Rei a kimono during a period of captivity in the Dark Kingdom. Since the artbook follows a similar vein, I thought it would be interesting to put her in an original design that reflected the Chaos element, and symbolized Rei’s predicament within the Chaos realm. Rei’s obi is undone, and has it’s own symbolism that adds to the story of the kimono (although it’s hard to see). Her makeup is inspired the Kyoto-based photo studio Esperanto Kokoro Kyoto Okazaki, which specializes in traditional geisha and oiran costuming and makeup. I gave Rei the more elaborate oiran makeup design (given the NSFW themes of the artbook), which make her face really glow :D. The gold calligraphy reads right-to-left the original poem written above.
A better view of the kimono...

Artbook Princess Jupiter. She’s part of Nephrite’s Silver Millennium memories in my art book A Chaotic Garden, to be released sometime early next year (I keep adding stuff to it 🤣)
The sasanqua camellia flowers she holds have a special meaning, one relevant to her emotions as well as her standing as a warrior. They also happen to be canonically Makoto’s favorite flower. The red symbolize unyielding, passionate love while the pink represents longing and long-distance love. The black and gold represent something more sinister, which begs the question…how accurate are these memories…?
Done in Clip Studio Pro.

"Rinpa (琳派, Rinpa) is one of the major historical schools of Japanese painting. It was created in 17th century Kyoto by Hon'ami Kōetsu (1558–1637) and Tawaraya Sōtatsu (d. c.1643). Roughly fifty years later, the style was consolidated by brothers Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716) and Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743)".

 Japanese art; Rinpa School Revival with ChatGPT and Midjourney - a different direction
The images created by Midjourney using the ChatGPT prompts deviated stylistically from the actual images in galleries such as The Met.
Initial initial examples with ChatGPT prompt:
Tumblr media
This year, it's a wonderful world; little frogs, big frogs as an image of lavish ornamentation and bold compositions. Utilize gold and silver leaf backgrounds with a vibrant color palette, including deep blues, reds, and greens. Emphasize stylized, decorative forms with a strong sense of rhythm and balance, drawing on traditional Rinpa motifs but with an added layer of opulence and complexity --ar 3:2
These images fit the prompt description but do not match the style of the original paintings.
A Met gallery description derived prompt with colour;

This year, it's a wonderful world; little frogs, big frogs an image with the mottled-ink (tarashikomi) technique of the Rinpa school, intricate realism vibrant colors
A Met gallery description derived prompt with black and white ;

This year, it's a wonderful world; little frogs, big frogs an image with the mottled-ink (tarashikomi) technique of the Rinpa school --ar 3:2
The black and white images fit the Rinpa style however colour in in important feature of the the style and should not be neglected.
Three artists were name dropped in the prompt: This year, it's a wonderful world; little frogs, big frogs an image in the style of {Suzuki Kiitsu, Hon’ami Kōetsu, Sakai Hōitsu} --ar 3:2
The results for Sakai Hōitsu are typical in that Midjouney overwrites the style or does not know it and so improvises.

The final result was to name drop and use the --style raw parameter. One image was close to the style.
