Intermission
Cyrus agrees to modify Riley's feelings, gets confronted by her, then remembers some of his worst moments at the farm and discovers Ortega's Epilepsy. All in the same evening. TW Suicidal thoughts. TW Motorbike accident. ------------------------ “Are you sure you want me to do this?” you ask, hoping he’ll change his mind.
The look in his eyes tells you he won’t take no for an answer on this.
“Please don’t get cold feet on me now Cyrus. You already told me you’d do it...”
“Yes, I did… Fine. I’ll do it. Whatever.” you shrug as he stops the bike.
The mansion is far from the city. A little spot of private heaven, paid for with taxpayer dollars by the look of it. The Carters have been in politics for long, and public officials are often very rich in Los Diablos’ corporate government.
You can’t help feeling out of place here. Every time you’ve been at a place like this, you were wearing a disguise, maybe a junior janitor, bellboy, or waiter. Always an extra layer of protection to keep people from looking at you.
But coming here in a hero suit, drawing everyone’s eyes?
That’s… something.
The door opens as you approach, with who you assume to be Riley walking outside, a wide smile on her face.
“Ric, so glad you stopped by...!”
“Sorry I didn’t call first, I was in the area and…-”
“And you wanted to apologize for what you said last time! It’s ok silly, I forgive you!
” she says, wrapping her arms around him and giving him an intense kiss that he doesn’t seem to be returning, not that it's stopping her, with her hand going lower and onto his butt.
“Rye, I just wanted to … Rye… Rye, I didn't come to apologize. I told you it's over… we need to talk...” he keeps trying to talk through the awkward kiss.
“I know you didn't mean it!" she laughs "Come on, say it! You missed me!”
“Rye… please cut it out...”
“Hmm.. now why would I do that…”
This is new. You’d have never expected to see Ortega look so helpless...
You imagine this would be what Anathema calls cringe.
She pauses as she opens her eyes, noticing you standing right there, staring at them. Her smile suddenly loses its intensity, looking just like something that’s splattered on her face.
“Oh. And you brought Sidestep.”
“Hello” you wave, trying to fit into the awkward moment, extending your hand.
“Hi. Riley Carter pleased to meet you” she replies, putting herself back together and letting Ricardo recover his breath. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“He’s my ride,” you point at Charge. He’s the culprit here, not you. Her mind is far too intense, and this is going to be hell…
“Like I said, Riley… I need to talk to you about something. Something important.” Ortega says, his voice more serious now.
Coward. Is that another reason he brought you, to rescue him? “Oh” Riley seems to have finally paid attention to what he was saying. “I’ll give you two some space,” you say, returning to the bike. Ortega looks alarmed by you leaving, but you have enough range that you don’t need to be right next to her to do it.
You lean on the motorbike, taking some chewing gum from your pocket as they start walking around the gardens, your mind following hers, and the conversation from her end. Ricardo tells her about the last events, how Psychopathor managed to assemble a tank in prison and blow the walls in his escape, the clash that happened afterward, and how some heroes and villains ended in the hospital. Or dead, like Darkfist, and Dr. Incredible who were vaporized in a plasma blast when the tank exploded. He then goes over the investigation that determined it was built using nano-construction techniques, and how the only portable device available for something like that was in the rangers HQ before it got stolen, without anyone knowing who told the thief it would be there. The trail ends with her... She stops him there, asking what does any of that has to do with her, asking him if he’s accusing her of something so ridiculous. Shouts at him that she didn’t know about any of it, and that’s when he decides to bring it out to show her. The bug that was placed in his communicator. The expensive, unique bug that was made to blend with his insulated tech. The bug that could only have been placed by someone really close to him… A pause in her mind. Hesitation…
She denies it. He insists. He tells her Steel had everyone’s hardware analyzed and only his costume was affected… and that there was only one person he had left the costume with.
That’s when she breaks. She tells him how she got tricked, how someone she met at a party told her he was cheating on her. How they told her where to get the bug… how to apply it… He yells at her, and you begin to feel like perhaps you shouldn’t be watching this, you shouldn’t be listening in…
But he wants to know, and you said you’d do it, so you stay hooked to her thoughts, like a parasite, feeling emotions you’ve never experienced herself. Guilt. Remorse. Shame.
She tells him she’s so sorry, that she didn’t mean for this to happen, that it’s all her fault… She starts crying, apologizing, asking him not to leave her…
Thinking she should kill herself.
The thought doesn’t get said out loud, but is so intrusive and enforced by so many negative memories that you have to block it out, pull out of her mind, run away, hide inside your own thoughts and lock down your shields so it doesn’t follow. You got the answer he wanted, so you can go back to feeling like the little guy chewing gum by the motorbike. But you’re crying too now. You’ve heard similar thoughts before, but not without the drug cocktails they gave you. Not without a team of specialists helping you scrub your mind of awful thoughts you took from people.
Your trainers told you plenty of times that humans get too emotional about their partners, and that you should stay clear of such thoughts. You should have listened. Now that you had a taste, you can tell they were right because It’s terrifying.
You open your eyes to see Ortega hugging her as she keeps weeping.
Blinking doesn’t make it go away.
Why? Wasn’t he angry at her a moment ago? You can’t understand it...
But you have to go in again.
You agreed to do this, and the answer was only half of it. You can’t walk back now…
Can’t help asking yourself again why did you agree to this...
Gathering all your strength, you focus and plunge deep into her thoughts once again.
It’s terrifying in there, like a building that’s falling apart, only held together by Ortega’s arms, or at least that’s what she thinks. She thought they would get married. She thought they would have children.
SHIT.
It’s getting to you, like a flood, and you’re drowning under it…
Is this love? Why can’t I be without him? Why does it hurt so much?
She doesn’t know, and you have no clue about these questions. “ Have you ever been in love?” She asks.
“No. I haven’t” you reply, because she’s right there. She can sense you now because you’re lost, and your training is useless here.
“But you have,” she says, pulling one of your own memories. One that you locked deep below, where it would never see the light of day. “You were in love and you made him go away.”
“ Stop. That’s not true! ” “ You loved him and you made him go away because you were afraid. And now you are going to make me go away because he is afraid. Afraid of me. ” This shouldn’t be happening. She shouldn’t be able to hurt you like this! But she isn’t… she’s just making you remember… You’re the one hurting yourself.
“ Oh my god, he’s such a coward … so you’re going to do it, no? ” she asks, bitter and relentless.
“ I told him I would,” you reply, elevating yourself above the flood that is her defense. Regaining control. Out of her grasp. “ Then do it,” she asks. “ Make me stop hurting .” Standing tall now, you can look down and see that the demons in her mind are many… Ortega is wrong. How is this going to help at all? “ DO IT, YOU FUCKING COWARD !” she dares you. “ DO IT !” The waters begin rising, trying to drown you again, but you’re ready this time, holding her back. burning deep, modified thoughts into her mind.
Turning her love to indifference. Annoyance to hatred. Breaking down her image of Ricardo to pieces, and scattering them through the waters, where they’ll never get put together again.
How far can you go?
Not much, you can sense an incoming migraine, a hard stop to your powers.
You keep going as much as you dare and then erase your own presence as well. Just like they trained you, replacing your thoughts with a tired rage aimed at the horrible boyfriend that made her cry.
You retreat for the second time, feeling your head hurting as never before. Your pain gate is no use, there’s no stopping it once it’s already inside the brain.
With a last effort, you awaken her, bringing her back to reality.
She stops weeping immediately, pushing him away, staring in shock.
What have you done?
You’re tearing up, as she looks at him with eyes that show no little recognition, before muttering a curse, telling him to get off her father’s property and going back inside, leaving him alone at the footsteps.
Why did you do this again?!
It made sense last time. You would have been discovered and reprogrammed. He wouldn’t stop having feelings for you. It was wrong.
So you reprogrammed him yourself because you couldn’t bear them doing that to him… NO!
No, you were just trying to save yourself. There’s nothing else to it.
Why did you do it again this time? Just because he asked? He’s not your handler! You know that.
Should have said no… why agree? You don’t have an answer.
His eyes are reddened as he gets closer, and by the look on his face that he’s equally shaken.
“Let’s go,” he says, without another word. You’re too weak to argue, and so you sit behind him, as he starts the engine, speeding you both away
________________________________________
The Carter mansion soon disappears in the distance, wind flowing heavily against your suit as Ricardo goes full throttle. Too fast to be able to talk normally, so you switch on your helmet’s intercom.
“We’re going really fast… are you ok?” “No I’m not ok” the reply comes a few seconds later. “Did you get anything?”
“I did,” you reply “Then hit me.” “As far as she knows, she didn’t lie, so they must have manipulated her into planting the bug..” He relaxes slightly as you say that, slowing down the bike. “That’s… good to hear,” he says at last.
“Did you really suspect her of being behind this?”
“Not her. Her father… he’s dirty and…” he sighs. “Mierda. That’s why it’s so hard to be in a relationship, you know? They’ll use anyone against you. They’ll do anything to get an advantage over you.” “She was still spying on you.” you point out. “And you still hugged her after she confessed.”
He doesn’t say anything else for a while, so you focus on the road ahead. It’s dark, and you can’t see much beyond the bike’s light. The city lights shine in the distance, but you still have above an hour to get there.
“Did you do it?” he asks in a shaky voice when you had started to think the rest of the journey would be silent.
“Yes. Yes, I did.” is all you can say.
“Thank you.” he lets out as if this had been a simple favor. Just some mind-trick, like making someone’s gun point the wrong way. Like finding out who’s looking at us…
“How was she?” he asks, not letting it go.
“What do you mean?”
“Her mind… how was it from the inside?”
“It was… I… You know I’m not a shrink, right?”
“Just tell me, Cyrus. Please” Shit.
“It was… bad. Like real bad.”
“How bad?”
You tighten your lips. That isn’t your memory...
“Cyrus, I'm only asking because I want to know if she’s going to hurt herself!”
“I did what you asked! I’m not a shrink, I just changed her feelings! She’ll stop trying to get together with you. That’s all I know!” you repeat, a lot louder this time. “Just answer the fucking question!” Deep breaths. “You don’t get it,” you complain, to no one in particular, because of course, he will never get it. Doesn’t he understand that you don’t want to think about this? It’s her thoughts, not yours, and you want it to stay that way!
“Tell me Cyrus, or we’re going to have a problem.” Your handler’s words coming from his mouth, making your skin crawl. Making you want to throw up.
Tell him. It’ll be easier.
But it’s not easy. The thought is charged with deep shame, now your shame and she rattled your own memories...
“Yes, Ric! Yes, she thinks of it sometimes. She thought of it today when you started yelling at her! Is that what you wanted to hear?!” “Yes.” he croaks through the intercom “Yes, I needed to know,” he says, the life sucked out of his voice.
“Fuck you.” you let out, feeling the beginning of the migraine, overloaded with too much baggage that doesn’t belong to you. “Can you help her with that?”
“FUCK YOU!” you scream louder.
“Cyrus, if you can help her with this then…”
“Help her with this? Listen to yourself!”
“I just want her to stop hurting!”
“And what? You want me to rewrite her into a better person, is that it? Newsflash, I can’t! I can’t handle my own problems and you want me to fix hers?” “But…” “You think I have some fucking magic wand? You don’t know what it’s like! It hurts both ways!” “I just wanted to help…” “FUCK YOU! All you want is to feel better about yourself!” Your head is about to explode, and you’re tearing up under your helmet, your eyes drifting onto the white lines on the road, going one after another in quick, endless succession. Focus on them. That’s safe. You can feel him sigh as you hold on tighter to his skinsuit, feeling him take a curve, with another incoming in the distance or so the signs say.
“Slow down. I want to get off…”
“We’re still far from the city.”
“Do you think I care? Let me off!” “I… I’m…” he’s mumbling erratically, the white lines on the road losing cohesion.
... something’s wrong! Your eyes widen as his hands begin slipping from the handlebar. There’s only a massive surge of static where his mind should be. Not normal, even for him.
“Wait, don’t do that!” You try to wrest control of the handgrips, but you’re not fast enough, and the bike goes sideways on the incoming curve, off the road, and down the cliff.
Down the cliff.
You barely manage to brace for impact, covering your head during the fall, bumping and rolling several times until you land on your stomach, the bike falling next to you. You stay there, immobile for a few seconds, internalizing what just happened. Wondering if this is where you die…
The question lingers until you struggle to sit up, finding you are still pretty much in one piece. Taking off your helmet reveals it’s cracked on several spots.
Shit.
Standing up is a chore, but your pain gate hasn’t activated. The suit must have spared you the worst, it would seem.
“Charge?” you ask, looking around in the darkness. The motorbike’s nearby, and you walk towards it, struggling to get it back to a standing position. You maneuver the wheel to point the light around, looking for him in the direction of his static, until you find him lying on his back.
You leave the light pointing at him as you get closer. “Are you ok?!” you ask, but there’s no answer. His neck is trembling, as are his hands, emitting pitiful noises… You try to hold him down, but a bolt of electricity almost catches your hand. It takes a moment before you remember that your suit’s gloves should be sufficiently insulated.
You kneel next to him, making sure only the gloves come into contact to take off his helmet, cracked just like yours. Underneath, his face is contorted to the side, trembling and breathing noisily.
“Seizure,” you say, immediately starting to follow the guidelines they implanted in you. Left arm bent to the side and out of the way, right hand on his cheek, right knee raised and bent, and then roll him over on his side, then steady his chin up to clear the airways… That’s about all you can do without getting caught in the current… but what if it doesn’t stop? What if sets his emitters to a higher setting and fries you?
No. That shouldn’t happen, he can’t accidentally change the power setting in this state.
“Breathe. Breathe. Keep breathing” you say, holding his hand, going wildly against yours.
You keep him steady, hoping it does stop, until after two minutes, he finally does, going limp, breathing noisily. His emitters die down too, thankfully.
“Hey…can you hear me?” you ask, tapping his arm.
He can’t, so you repeat the question a few times, waiting. Waiting for him to come back until he finally answers with a quick nod, pressing the hand you’re holding.
It’s a relief to see him coming back to his senses somewhat, but it presents a different challenge because he’s also been in an accident on top of the seizure and you need to check if he’s ok. So you start asking him questions about his arms and legs, getting one-word responses with a delay, as he’s close to non-verbal.
Head hurts. Both arms fine. Chest fine. Right leg fine. Left leg hurts.
Nothing seems broken, which is a relief.
You try your intercom, but the pieces are broken and you can’t reassemble it without tools. You take his helmet but the inside smells burnt, he must have fried it.
“I’ll be right back,” you say, stepping up to drag the motorcycle closer to see what the damage is. That’s when you notice the rear wheel is completely bent.
Great.
“Now this thing has to have a radio…” you begin checking the features “YES! Here!” You kiss the small device, looking for the on the switch to…-
“Wait,” he says, a hand extended towards you.
“Wha… why?”
“They can’t know I had a seizure…”
“You don’t want me to call?”
“Please no,” he asks.
You look at him, finally starting to understand what’s going on…
“You're epileptic!”
“I just missed a few doses! Haven’t had one in years! If you tell them...”
It’s all too clear what would happen. If the media found out the Marshal had a seizure while speeding on the highway...
You keep staring back at him, in shock, before tossing the radio down and sitting back next to him.
“Alright… I won’t call them. It’s ok” you reassure him. “It’s going to be fine.”
He replies with a pained “Thank you”
“I’ll… I’ll fix this. Somehow.” Why are you doing this after what he just pulled on you earlier? Why do you care so much about this asshole?
Why do any of it? The answer comes almost immediately. It seems you’re not THAT dense.
It almost makes you laugh, with the absurdity of it all.
Luckily it takes you less than an hour to get a car to stop to take you back to town convincing the driver that you’re just wearing costumes for a party and crashed on the way. He asked you what kind of party this late at night and Ortega decides to intervene, claiming you’re strippers for a bachelor’s party. That works like a charm, he can make up all the answers he needs in his own mind. Ricardo is silent through the rest of the journey, you don’t know if he’s still recovering or if he simply has nothing else to say. It doesn’t really matter, because you couldn’t be more thankful for it, as the migraine explodes in full force. ____________________________ My Fanfiction: https://chaniters.tumblr.com/post/181692759294/my-fanfiction-for-fallen-hero

Reimposition
(Follow [Legacy], runs in conjunction with [Like So Many Grains of Sand] & [Defibrillation])
Suspended in the nothingness, a cold burn raged from within, feeling as if she was being torn apart from the inside out. The screams of agony were drowned out by the white noise that rang in the ears, the note climbing higher and higher as the intensity of the pain grew. Building up, it felt as if it would finally end, the pressure of the vacuum in her core threatening to burst until it all suddenly vanished, and the palms of her hands were planted against the floor of a carriage.
Gasping for air Kat fell back into the cushioned seat and against the wall, a hand resting on her throat as she hastily glanced around. For once, she was alone in the speeding vehicle, no slamming of a cane or cryptic words from the mouth of a ghost. Instead, a pocket watch had been left on the seat where Charles had always appeared, and once her thoughts cleared enough to move, Kat didn’t hesitate to snatch up the timepiece.
Less than a minute remained until time ran out, thirty seconds. As the second hand ticked backward, she looked towards the still shifting, the non-euclidean world beyond the carriage window. A shaky exhale and the feeling of a burden lifted. She could finally escape this purgatory, move on to whatever afterlife awaited. For a moment, her mind lingered on those she’d leave behind and how she failed them, but eyes peeled back to the face of the watch.
The second hand neared the end, ticking from the last five seconds. Three, two, one...
The hand froze in place, the timepiece stopped.
“No...” Kat breathed out.
Muscles in her face twitched as her anger began to boil, the grip on the watch tightening as she shook it and tapped it against the palm. “No!” She shouted, vigorously shaking the timepiece now as she felt cheated.
“No! It’s not fair!” Her voice cracked, and the watch was slammed into the floorboards, shattering into several pieces. The sole of her boot crushed what remained as rage clouded her vision, the tears of anger and sorrow welling along the bottom eyelid.
Elbows propped on the knees as she threw her head forward, fingers collecting in the mess of raven hair as she sobbed in anger. Contemplating if this was, in fact, her afterlife and not a purgatory, sentenced to relive her mistakes, betrayals, and second guess for an eternity. It wasn’t until the carriage came to its abrupt halt that her attention returned to her surroundings.
The world outside was breaking apart, into specs of white dust, floating upward into the beyond as if caught in a breeze. Curious, Kat stepped out of the carriage, watching the sight across the inverted city in awe, before she realized it was getting closer at an alarming rate.
Boots dug into the cobblestones as she began to flee, but the effort was in vain. Within seconds the street and buildings around her began to peel away in flakes. Panicking, she reached out for something, anything, but instead found her hand and arm disintegrating in the same manner. In the blink of an eye, the entire limb was gone, and soon after, the rest of her body followed, her scream of fear echoing out into the empty white space.
“We had a deal.” A voice similar to her own, and familiar, called out from the unknown. “And it’s time you’ve held up your end.”
“That’s rich, seeing as how you’ve failed to hold up yours,” Kat responded in what felt telepathic. Without a physical form, she couldn’t tell if she was looking around the blank space or if it moved around her.
The mirrored voice began to laugh menacingly as it took form. The floating black shadow slipping into view, it’s dark violet eyes set on Kat as a sharp finger wagged in the air. “My end was to prevent you from dying, which you didn’t make easy over the years.”
“Looks like you’ve failed. Deals off.”
“Ah, hardly.” The shadow waved off. “Technically, you mortals are so fragile from the inside out. Alive, but only just.” Two of its sharp fingers pinched the air, leaving only a hair of space between them as it’s legless body floated closer. “The deal was alive, never said anything about conscious.”
“And you allowed the corruption of an Old God to seed and run rampant? As far as I’m concerned, we’re done.”
“That was your own doing!” The shadow spat out as it quickly closed the distance, it’s faceless form inches from Kat. “I warned you not to play in that part of the void, yet you poked and prodded, opened the door, and let the Old one into your mind. Don’t blame me for that, I may be timeless, but I’m not that strong. Or at least I would be had you upheld your end of the bargain. You never did tell the Void Priest why you kept her around.”
“You know how much I fucking hate sand... “Another familiar voice called out from nowhere, both Kat and the shadowy being glancing upward to try and place it.
“Riley?” Kat questioned under her breath. “No. No, that can’t be right. She’s been gone for months...”
“Another lost cause.” The shadow chimed in. “I’m tired of being cheated out of what is owed and subjected to the menagerie of weak-willed mortals you coil around your fingers.”
The empty space shifted in the blink of an eye and turned into a harrowingly familiar sight. The Freehold Arena. In the change, Kat found herself in a physical form once more, in the thin leather outfit she had been forced to wear at the time. Looking downward, she discovered her folding sword in one hand.
“There won’t be an Admiral to save you from the ring this time. Pity, that.” The being taunted as the rolling cloud of its form shifted, donning a mirror image of the Director, the body and attire pitch black and eyes remaining the deep violet hue. Its own weapon lifted, pointing at Kat from across the ring as it slowly circled.
“You...” Kat spoke slowly as she began piecing things together. “You think you can take my form, my body, and ascend yourself on your own.”
The dark mirrored image shrugged one shoulder as the circling came to an end. “I believe it was you who said so yourself; trust others takes too much time, easier and more efficient to do it yourself. If you’re not going to respect our deal...” Turning Kat’s own words against her, the shadow rushed across the arena.
In the split second of judgment, Kat braced herself and the swords locked together, the sound of steel on steel piercing the air as she stared down the image of herself over the blades. Both exerted force, near equally matched as either refused to falter.
The sky above twisted and shifted without warning, the clouded sky vanishing and an inverted woodland replacing the once blue sky. The forest was akin to the conscious space of Alyssa’s blade. Both Kat and the shadow were distracted by the sudden change, looking upward in the moment of confusion.
Her adversary took advantage, kicking her leg out from beneath her and bringing the sword around. Leaning back, Kat narrowly dodged the attack, the razor edge of the blade making the briefest of contact with her cheek, drawing a small amount of blood.
Rolling backward, Kat sprung to her feet and parried a second attack, taking the window of opportunity to counter, slicing the jet black arm by a hair. Pushing back the shadowy being unleashed a relentless onslaught of hasty attacks. With only the one weapon, Kat was forced to time her defenses, the steel colliding in a few block blows as she maneuvered backward, pivoting on a leg to dodge the other attacks.
Their dance of blades seemed endless; one after another, they pressed each other. Scrapes and nicks of the blades across their bodies and taunts and sharp words were slung between blows. The ground within the arena began to crack with small fissures, glowing both dark and bright from beneath the earth.
Another spark-throwing parry overhead and everything froze, neither could move, or look around. The silence was overwhelming before the ground trembled uncontrollably, and the whisper of Riley’s voice sounded again.
“Kat, I don’t have a lot of time, so I need you to hear me in there, alright? You have to survive this. You have to come back. I don’t want to drink alone for the rest of my miserable life, so I’m going to need you to survive like you always fucking do. I lo— Lady, get off me!”
Time resumed, and the inverted woodland above blinked out of existence. Kat’s arm continued in the follow-through, circling around before forcefully kicking the shadowy being away to create some distance.
“Riley?!” Kat called out, glancing around in confusion.
“Nobody here, but you and I.” The dark mirror image answered, rushing Kat again.
Stepping to the side, she avoided the attempt at impalement, raising her own weapon to slash upward from the bottom. Her attack failing as the earth shook and fissures grew again and sent them both staggering to the side, hands scratching at the ground as she fought to stay standing.
“She’s crashing again!” Another unknown voice shouted from nowhere.
As the tremor ended, it was Kat that rushed her mirror image this time, forgoing an attempt at impaling and using her momentum to slash horizontally. Another failed attack as the being parried, staggering Kat and brining its sword overhead.
With her free hand, Kat caught the incoming blow by the being’s wrist, following through by pulling the arm down and across, elbow to elbow she pushing up from the ground and rolled over the being’s back. Tucking the sword against her chest in the movement, Kat utilized the momentum to land a mighty swing, her arm extending as the roll concluded and the blade making contact with the mirror image’s midsection.
As the sword pierced the body and cleaved it into two, the shadowy creature dissipated into the original cloudy form again, screeching in pain.
“Cranial swelling will never go down at this rate.” The unknown voice spoke, from nowhere, over the pained wails of the creature.
The Freehold arena began to crumble and break as chunks of the earth floated toward the sky or collapsed into the unknown depths below, the dark and light glow flashing erratically from each fissure.
“You can’t kill me!” The creature of shadows cried out as it retreated and vanished from view. “I will get what is owed.”
Ignoring the vocal threat, Kat dropped her weapon and moved out of the way of flying chunks of earth. Panicked again, she searched for an exit but found nothing. The ground beneath her boot gave out mid-step as another fissure opened up, nearly swallowing her whole. Fingers clawed into the dirt as she scrambled to pull herself free until loose earth slammed into the side of her skull, and her frantic hold on the ground was broken.
“I’m sorry...” Riley’s voice echoed quietly amidst the chaos as Kat tumbled into the unknown depths.

What happened during freshman year
what a question, dear… what a question. to be completely honest, nothing major that would impact your overall understanding of the show – aside from knowing riley was being bullied, which is common knowledge to the viewer. mostly, the biggest thing that developed over the course of freshman year was establishing personalities and lines in the sand that would carry over and steel by the time riley shows up at the start of S1.
that being said, i do have some thoughts that i can… elaborate upon. some of these will be explored in a special episode in S5, and others are just thoughts and concepts that the writing team here developed in thinking about character and where they are now.
farkle and maya, coincidentally, began their careers at AAA assuming they would be best friends. of course, the pressure of competition and fear of getting left behind so early on got the best of them and within the first couple of weeks they instead ended up in the rivalry they have now, but they’ve had Interest in one another since day one.
at AAA, they do a “big sib, little sib” program in which upperclassmen students are assigned to each incoming freshman. while this can sometimes go great, i.e. maya’s relationship with her big sib carla, or go nowhere, as the majority of them do, it can also take… bad directions if the students don’t choose to utilize the dynamic in the correct way.
this is what happened with zay, whose big sib brooklyn decided that dating his assigned little sib would be the way to go (as an RA, this makes me cringe so badly, but it happens). case in point this relationship did not end well, and put zay in a sort of weird situation given that half of his actual friends for a majority of his first year were upperclassmen who, when brooklyn broke up with him, suddenly didn’t want anything to do with him. this is part of the reason why zay is facing such a unique sense of isolation in S1.
it also greatly impacts how he perceives and approaches relationships, but that’s something to unpack at a later time…
coming into AAA, lucas actually wasn’t opposed to performing. he was an active and willing participant for the first… week or so, until farkle told him he was off-key and out of step and essentially humiliated him. then lucas donned his snapback, popped some gum, and said okay kiddos strap in for four years of psychological torment. and here we are. thanks, farkle.
yes, that implies that lucas can sing. hmm…
shawn spent freshman year for the crew getting his sea legs and figuring out what this role as lead technician actually meant. if you can imagine it, his relationship with angela was even more of a mess during this time than what we saw at the start of S1.
lucas and asher became each other’s first friends at AAA. lucas and isadora became friends about a month into the school year, but had immediate mutual respect after about a week.
dylan and asher spent the first semester having crushes on one another but not believing that the other person could like them back. coming back from winter break they had officially begun dating, and the rest is history.
charlie had two major crushes during this time – on mister shawn, which was mortifying enough, and then on lucas which lasted for the duration of first semester even though lucas was a jerk to him. he never even considered trying to befriend zay, however, as he was way too sure of himself, cool, and already surrounded by friends so it didn’t seem worth the effort just to get rejected.
zay quickly realized that farkle was going to be major competition for him, although why he couldn’t figure out. there’s a sort of “the room where it happens” a la hamilton vibe between them.
jack agreed to let lucas into the school as a favor to a friend, but after about 2 weeks they… don’t have a great start. it’s enough to say that… lucas was far from jack’s favorite student over the course of freshman, despite how much time he spent in his office getting reprimanded. in fact, going into S1, part of jack was seriously considering giving up and searching for another school to send him to. one has to wonder what might’ve happened if a certain scrappy brunette hadn’t shown up and encouraged people to show their true colors…

Tennis Commit to a Groove at Brooklyn Steel
Floor-length gold skirt glistening, Alaina Moore returned to the stage. Tennis’s last tour ended near disaster: a health scare for Moore and the death of Patrick Riley’s father nearly ended the band. Then, just as they had prepared a set supporting their most recent (and best) album, 2020’s Swimmer, the COVID-19 pandemic began, and they lost all of their income. So Thursday night at Brooklyn Steel was part of a homecoming to the stages they once called home—and that they so nearly had to leave forever.
About midway through the show, Moore asked, “What’s the use in resisting?” That question, from “Fields of Blue,” off their 2018 album, Yours Conditionally, framed Tennis’s return. Throughout their tightly performed set, vocalist and keyboardist Moore and guitarist Riley, backed by touring members Ryan Tullock on bass and Steve Voss on drums, asked the audience what is so frightening about oblivion. A lot of bands claim to groove, but Tennis really do. Of all the things that set them apart from their contemporaries in the world of synth-led indie pop—wife Moore’s startlingly pure soprano and husband Riley’s warbling guitars—the beating heart at the center of Tennis has always been a commitment to a groove. Onstage on Thursday, the band thumped valiantly, bringing to life the rhythms that pulse through their recorded material.
But in the end, it’s all about Moore and Riley. When the couple returned to the stage, the singer now in a wedding dress, to perform the sing-along “Matrimony,” the crowd was ensnared. Thanks to their hazy, sincere pop, suddenly all the various oblivions Tennis sing about—marriage, death, life, the deep blue sea—didn’t seem quite as scary as they might have. —Adlan Jackson | @AdlanKJ

FA Cup brings six-month wait to an end
Non-league Football Preview
ALMOST six months to the day since non-league football had to go into lockdown, competitive games resume in the Tameside and Glossop area tomorrow (Saturday) with the FA Cup preliminary round.
And in a move sure to disappoint clubs that have had to tolerate a long period with almost no income, the prize fund has been slashed. Winning teams will receive £1,444 instead of £2,890 and the losers get £750 rather than £960.
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC will be the first Tameside outfit in action thanks to the early kick-off for their visit to Stocksbridge Park Steels.
The cross-Pennines tie - which is all-ticket - has been selected for live streaming by the BBC (available on the red button) and will kick off at 12.40pm.
Only four players remain from last season’s squad as manager Simon Haworth and his new assistant Ian Johnson look to engineer an uplift in fortune for the Bower Fold club. Skipper Steve O’Halloran has also been added to the coaching staff.
Haworth will select his team from a fully fit squad of 20, with one of the 16 new signings, Keano Deacon, fit again after missing last weekend’s 4-0 friendly win at Longridge Town.
Defender Freddie Sass was unveiled as the final piece of the jigsaw yesterday, with Bradley Knox and Chris Holroyd being released.
Bridge were unbeaten in pre-season, winning seven and drawing two of their nine games and will travel to South Yorkshire full of confidence despite only one competitive win in 2020.
Three months after his appointment, MOSSLEY fans will finally get their chance to run the rule over new manager Dave Fish who replaced Dave Wild in June.
The former Chadderton boss, who leads his side against St Helens at Seel Park, admits he faces a difficult task in deciding on his line-up. “I’m still mulling over the starting 11 given the performances from everyone in the squad over pre-season,” he commented this morning.
Steve Mason and Paul Riley both miss out through injury and Jordan Butterworth is suspended. A couple of other players are said to be carrying niggles but should be fit. Andy Keogh is available after returning from holiday.
The Lilywhites have declared a crowd limit of 400 for the tie and admission is on a first-come, first-served basis.
ASHTON UNITED only have one injury for the visit of Squires Gate. The influential Liam Tomsett has a damaged shoulder and will be having an MRI scan tomorrow.
There will be some admission on the gate but given the covid-19 situation the club would prefer tickets to be bought through the website www.ashtonunited.co.uk
Peter Band is in confident mood of GLOSSOP NORTH END’s clash with City of Liverpool at Surrey Street.
He said: “We have a lot of new faces but I feel we’re going in the right direction. I have a full squad to pick from with 13 from last season as well as the new lads.
“I just hope we can get the paperwork for Mark Haslam and Alfons Fosu-Mensah sorted out it time.
Admission should be possible on the gate.
There are two friendlies. HYDE UNITED are home to Farsley Celtic (3pm) while CURZON ASHTON visit Stockport County for a game behind closed doors.

Updated MacGyver Episodes
The social justice end of MacGyver hasn’t really come up in the new series yet, but here’s a list of classic episodes, seamlessly updated for present-day issues. These episodes weren’t exactly perfect, even for the time, but they did contain some thought-provoking material. I’ve tried to update them into storylines that both fit with the current characters and plots, and present-day issues.
Here’s my list of how I’d like to see these episodes updated for the new series:
Ugly Duckling: When a bullied gay teen agrees to use her hacking skills for the wrong organization in return for revenge against her classmates, Riley goes undercover to pull her out, and learns the extent to which bullying can impact lives. Issues; Bullying, Self-Esteem.
Hell Week: College students participating in the Phoenix Foundation’s annual high-stakes physics competition turn to “smart drugs” -prescription ADHD medication- in order to get ahead, but with devastating consequences. Issues; Academic Pressure, Prescription Medication Abuse
The Spoilers: When the Phoenix Foundation teams with a local public health department to aid an outbreak investigation that seems to be blocked on every side, MacGyver realizes the outbreak is an act of industrial dumping- one that contaminated the water supply in a low-income neighborhood. Issues; Industrial Contamination, Environment
The Endangered: The team spends a week camping in a national park at the request of a Ranger who believes someone is poaching a collection of endangered species on protected land. Issues; Poaching, Endangered Species
Blood Brothers: MacGyver returns to his hometown, finding that the opioid epidemic has severely impacted the people there. Meanwhile, Mac and Jack have to reconcile their differences in opinions when it comes to firearms as Mac recounts the childhood events that lead him to never using a gun again. Issues; Opioid Abuse, Gun Control
The Challenge: A youth center that Riley once frequented comes under fire from racist community members when the POC youth it serves begin engaging in peaceful, but highly visible protests. Issues; Racism, protesting
Runners: The Phoenix Foundation team is sent to protect an underage transgender prostitute after she confesses damming evidence against her pimp. Issues; Teenage Runaways, Forced Prostitution, LGBT youth
Renegade: A disenfranchised veteran with untreated behavioral health problems is conned into supporting a biological attack with a group of anti-military protestors. The Phoenix Foundation team must prevent the highly trained operator from staging a heist of genetically altered anthrax. Issues; Veterans Issues, Mental Health, PTSD
Ten Percent Solution: An Alt-Right group claims responsibility for a rash of anti-Semitic hate crimes committed in the LA area, but when the Phoenix Foundation launches an investigation, they find a much broader and more sinister plan underway. Issues; Alt-Right, Antisemitism
Hearts of Steel: When a social media campaign to draw attention to dangerous working conditions is quashed, workers go to drastic extremes -in the form of kidnapping the CEO’s daughter- to start a conversation. Issues; Worker’s Rights, Unions, Working Conditions
Rush to Judgement: Bozer ends up the only black man on a jury overseeing the case of a black murder suspect. Also the only one to believe the suspect is innocent, but unable to prove it, Bozer breaks court confidentiality to ask the Phoenix Foundation to find evidence the man was framed. Issues; Racism
Twenty Questions: When Jack’s niece ends up in police custody, Mac figures out the girl’s sudden delinquency likely stems from a problem with alcohol abuse. Issues; Alcoholism, Teen Delinquency
Bitter Harvest: Caught up in an migrant worker’s rights protest and arrested, MacGyver and Jack seize the opportunity to go undercover and expose the dangerous and difficult lives migrant workers face- especially as the community is inundated with ICE raids. Issues; Immigration, Migrant Worker’s Conditions
Trail of Tears: The Phoenix Foundation gets into trouble when the team runs supply missions to support protests against an oil pipeline that threatens both sacred ground and a native american reservation’s water supply. Issues; Native Lands, Environment
Rock the Cradle: This one isn’t social justice, but I would 100% watch the heck out of Jack and Mac trying to take care of a baby together.

Every Fight Has An End
'You don't have to win every fight. You just have to get back up when you lose.' My mother's words float through my mind as I stare at myself in the mirror, at the blood still caked on my face and hands. This was the fifth fight this month, and the second loss. I knew fighting in a ring wasn't exactly what she had in mind when those words came out of her mouth, but in a boxing ring is where I had ended up, fighting to earn enough money to get through the week. Was it an unconventional way to earn a living? Probably. But it payed well when I won. Or, well enough at least. I had enough for food, rent, and small luxuries, but not enough to leave this hell hole behind. I nudge the faucet handle with my elbow - one of the few places devoid of blood - to get the water started then run my hands and arms under it. As soon as the water runs clear, I turn my attention to the cuts and bruises on my face, most of which I know will hurt like hell once the adrenaline wears off. I do my best to clean out the cuts, put a couple Band-Aids on the worst ones, then rub salve on the bruises and hope for the best. I stare myself down for a moment, debating whether or not it's worth it to put the suplies back into the cupboard when a knock on my front door makes my decision for me. I leave everything on the counter and maneuver my way around the furniture in my tiny appartment to peep through the hole at the top of my door, only to sigh and steel myself for the interaction that was bound to happen when I opened the door. "Hey Riley," I greet tiredly. "So it's true, you got into another fight," they say, barging into my appartment. "Seriously Scarlet, you need to find a better source of income that doesn't get you beat up every week." "I know, I know," I reply, closing the door behind them. "I just...I don't know what I would do." "What about your art?" Riley suggests, pointing to the framed sketch of my mom and I that I had drawn awhile ago and was surprisingly still proud of. "No, I could never," I respond resolutely, shaking my head and causing a worse headache than the one already pounding on the inside of my skull. "Why not?" they ask. "I'm serious Scar, you're scarily good. I know people who would pay good money to commission you." "Making art isn't any more of a reliable income than fighting in the Pits, Ri. At least there I know when I'll get paid." Riley sighed, then perked back up a moment later with a glint in their eyes. "Oh no, I know that sparkle. No good ideas ever come out of that sparkle." "Oh, come on Scar. It's a good sparkle this time, I promise!" I narrow my eyes at them, but sigh a moment later, "Fine. What is it this time?" "Well, I figured since I haven't been able to convince you to find another way to earn money besides fighting, only one other person would." "No. I am not going to visit my mother while I'm bloddied and brusied, she doesn't deserve to see that her only daughter is just as much as a screw up as I've always been." "You're not a screw up Scar, you never have been and you never will be. And you don't really have a choice in this one," they continue, grasping my arm and starting to pull me back towards the door. "At least let me lock the door first." ____________________________________________ The two of us arrived at my mother's house soon after, and though I dreaded the upcoming conversation, I was excited to see my mother. Riley knocked on the door, but when there was no answer they tried the handle. It was unlocked. "That's strange. Mom always locks the door. She's not Gibbs." I stepped through the doorway, Riley close on my heels. "Mom? Hello? Is anyone home?" "Oh my God." I spun sharply around only to see Riley standing in shock and staring into the living room, their hands over their mouth. "What? What's wrong?" I moved over to their side and peeked into the room. "Mom? Mom!" I rushed over to where she was lying face down on the floor, blood already pooled around her, and turned her onto her back. I heard Riley dialing 911 in the background, but I tuned out their voice and focused on my mom's too pale face. "No. No, no, no, no, no! This can't be happening! Mom! Please wake up, please!" But I already knew what my heart refused to accept. Her words popped into my head, a cruel twist to the scene before me. 'You don't have to win every fight. You just have to get back up when you lose.' But my mom wasn't getting back up from this fight.

First full-length in seventeen years from the Chain Reaction/Force Inc. legends. Ever since their initial singles were released in the mid-1990s and became international calling cards for the Chain Reaction label, the Porter Ricks duo of Thomas Köner and Andy Mellwig have represented that crucible point in which techno music leaked into new social environments and became the background music for cutting-edge cultural critique. Their submerged "scuba" sound, presented in dark tone colors and reverberating to infinity, is now instantly identifiable as one of the "soundmarks" of Berlin club culture. Just as importantly, it is still a palpable aftershock of a pre-millenial genre explosion that saw deep dub, shimmering post-rock, abstract hip-hop, and art-damaged noise all drinking from the same well of inspiration. For proof of Porter Ricks's enduring legacy, look no further than the fact that "dub techno" is now a stylistic movement that has expanded far beyond the confines of Berlin and the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction label alliance (where Mellwig's mastering skills also played a starring role). Lurid traces of Porter Ricks's aesthetic can now be found in the work of producers like Andy Stott and Miles Whittaker, showing the potential for the duo's unique "aquatic" techniques to be applied to a variety of different musical contexts. Their new LP on Tresor, Anguilla Electrica, may be their first full-length release in seventeen full years, but it radiates with confidence and with a clarity and intensity rarely seen in a world so over-saturated with communications noise. It's made clear at once that it's a continuation of a sonic ideal rather than a tribute to what has already been achieved: the duo is not idly sitting back while their newer acolytes do their talking for them. This new LP is well worth the wait and is a life-affirming one in an uncertain and perilous time, drowning out daily anxieties like a rush of incoming surf -- yet it is far more invigorating than relaxing. True to the Porter Ricks's tradition, it will be just as exciting hearing this music as it will be to experience what new cultural mutations it leaves in its wake. TELAIO MAGNETICOLive 75 LP $27.99Black Sweat Records present an expanded reissue of Telaio Magnetico's Live 75, including unreleased tracks from the super group's only tour in 1975. Telaio Magnetico was composed of Franco Battiato, Lino Capra Vaccina, Juri Camisasca, Mino Di Martino, Roberto Mazza, and Terra Di Benedetto. In the mid '70s, the Italian underground scene seemed to mature an existential priority of yearning toward a new psychological universe, with a firm idea to colonize an uncharted space of a necessary and infinite path of spiritual redemption. In this context, the short experience of Telaio Magnetico was born from the confluence of the Battiato's experimental efforts, in works such as Sulle Corde Di Aries (1973), Clic (1974), and M.elle Le "Gladiator" (1975), and the Albergo Intergalattico Spaziale's new esoteric electronics. A mosaic of metamorphic sounds and frequencies of unfamiliar constellations, the music of Telaio is an imaginary trimurti of "energy-cosmos-mind". Synths and Lowrey organs draw sidereal labyrinths and landscapes, scanned to infinity by a harmonic percussions arsenal. Whispering and radical improved vocals are lost as delusional fugues in centrifugal vortices and, at the same time, seem to offer a compendium of religious chants which evoke Tibetan choruses, Indian pujas or the Gregorian tradition. Reemerging sometimes as Sufi cadences and relaxations, or pastoral-tribal elements on which the chamber carpet of oboe blows like Arabs, Egyptians, or Moroccans pifferos. That traced is not only a galactic river, but also a Mediterranean circumnavigation: a unique creative moment that, in addition to the references with the German kosmische music and British space-rock, seems to be perfumed by the influence of Gurdjieffian mystic and even had roots in the minimalist drones of Terry Riley and La Monte Young, also drawing parallels to the contemporary research of authors such as Alvin Curran and the following explorations of Futuro Antico. Pharoah Sanders: Izipho Zam LP $26.99Everland Jazz present a reissue of Pharoah Sanders's Izipho Zam (My Gifts), originally released in 1973. "Popular and increasingly in demand, Izipho Zam (My Gifts) falls into the 'rare' category among record collectors and is a gift to fans of master Pharoah Sanders. This demand is partially galvanized by the fact that 'Prince Of Peace' has become an inspirational mine to hip hop artists and is much loved by samplers. Izipho Zam is Pharoah Sander's third album, initially recorded in January 1969, it was originally released on the Strata-East label in 1973. On Izipho Zam, Sanders and his band take you on a journey into another world providing an amazing experience! Passionate, intense and free, Sanders saxophone especially, is exquisite, pouring out its soul telling a story of its own. Hailed by peers as the best tenor saxophonist in the world, Pharoah Sanders is a legend in jazz music. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of free jazz and is the mentor of jazz giant, saxophonist Robert Stewart. Born in 1940 into a musical family as Farell Sanders in Arkansas, he first played the clarinet before switching to tenor saxophone in high school. After high school, he moved to California to study music and art. In 1961, Sanders moved to New York where he often played gigs with a number of free jazz dignitaries including Billy Higgins, Sun Ra and Don Cherry. His name 'Pharoah' was given to him by Sun Ra, who was his bandleader then. It was during one of these gigs that he met John Coltrane who became his mentor. While playing with Coltrane, Sanders inevitably rose to prominence due to his very distinctive tenor saxophone sound." --Rachel Kinoti Licensed by Strata-East Recordings. CENTURIONS, THEBullwinkle Part II: Surfers' Pajama Party Recorded Live On The U.C.L.A. CampusLP $26.99Go! Bop! present a reissue of The Centurions's Surfers' Pajama Party Recorded Live On The U.C.L.A. Campus, originally released in 1963. Few acts have a cult reputation such as The Centurians, or The Centurions as they were originally called. In 1967, they changed their name to The Centurians for legal reasons. The main point of interest though is this set of killer tunes. Original pressings fetch prices of $200, and due to their appearance in Pulp Fiction (1994), this band has gained a cult following of younger people who have kept their legacy alive, even bringing them to reunite for a second career. The Centurians are definitely a Californian band. But they seem to come from the darker, windier, and dirtier part of the beach, where only overly tattooed bikers get their willing victims laid and the rough sea craves for the lives of daring surf maniacs. The music is surf rock'n'roll, but it's different to most of the fluffy good time party bands. The bass guitar plays a mean line with all the tunes to give 'em a bent-out-of-shape spine, at which the beats of the drum, the desperately howling saxophone, and the gloomy twangy guitar, get tightened with rusty wire. The performance presented here is excellent. The musicians belong to the best of their genre. The atmosphere is just utterly mysterious, dark, and dusty, and the steaming hot melodies and the fuzzed-out bass and saxophone lines will have you grasping for air. The most popular tracks here are the ones that appeared on Pulp Fiction, "Bullwinkle Pt. II" and "Comanche", which is a famous tune from back in the day (the Pulp Fiction OST features a ravaging version by The Revels). The whole record has this desperate expression, a hunger for life, and a love young fellows from the darker side of town had back then, and still have. A long overdue proper reissue of a long-lost classic. Includes six bonus tracks. VASprigs Of Time: 78s From The EMI Archive 2LP $26.992017 repress. Originally released in 2008. This is the third in Honest Jon's series of albums exploring the earliest 78s held in the EMI Hayes Archive. Honest Jon's spent two years delving through more than 150,000 78 records in the temperature-controlled steel vaults of EMI's Archive in Hayes, Middlesex. An eccentric survey of the Hayes shelves, Sprigs Of Time is a thirty track compilation featuring material recorded between 1903 and 1957, everywhere from England (Percy Grainger's recording of the title song, sung by Joseph Taylor in 1908) to Japan (the bewilderingly beautiful "Seigaiha", by the Japanese Imperial Palace Band, five years earlier). Organ rolls from Georgia run alongside Tamils impersonating motorized transport, and rumba from Beirut; '40s fado sits next to the songs of Bengali beggars. As with the other Hayes releases, all tracks have been restored at Abbey Road and are beautifully presented here with extensive contemporary photographs. There are recognizable names (Joseph Taylor, the incomparable Fairuz, Mighty Sparrow and an uncredited Rubén González, singing lead vocals on "Rumba Negra") and extraordinary oddities (Vengopal Chari's rather unfunny "Laughing" and the peculiarly affecting hand bells of "Gas All Clear"). Taken out of the library and put back on the turntable, every track here is remarkable; every one worth the saving. Also features: G.U. Hsu, Gamelan Gong, Rizeli Kemenceci Sadik, Ochieng Wa Odinga, Sacasas, Jean Mpia, Jonuzi Me Shoket, Fernando Vilches & Ramon Montoya, Cliff Edwards, Benodini Dassi, Imperial Palace Band, Mr. Ero, Fatma Ben Meddah, Noubar Bey & Party, Ben Simmons, Cantonese Opera, Sam Mayo, Fernando Farinha, Gopal Chunder Singh Roy, Fatma El Chameya Sudaneya, Surat Band (Mr. Razak's), Si Said Ben Ahmed, Malijo & Party, Sexteto Habanero, and A.R.P.. Comes in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with two booklets of photos and notes. DMX KREWStrange Directions 2LP $29.99Since releasing his last album on Hypercolour in February 2016, You Exist (HYPE 005LP), DMX Krew has not for one moment rested on laurels, releasing two further LPs on the Ekster and Abstract Form labels, as well as EPs and singles for Central Processing Unit, Shipwrec, Revoke, and more. Continuing to remain faithful to the roots of electro, IDM, and the deeper shades of techno, and without compromise, DMX Krew cranks out emotive and brain scrambling electronica at a mighty rate, and never disappoints. Strange Directions is album number 21 from DMX Krew, and lands once more on Hypercolour, the British label that continues to make heady waves in the music scene with genre shifting releases from the likes of Matthew Herbert, Luke Vibert, Gary Gritness, The Cyclist, Outboxx, and A Sagittariun since the release of You Exist. You'll know what kind of ride you are in for from the first few bars of album opener "Snowy Blue"; hypnotizing bass and spatial keys float over dusty micro breaks, produced with an infectious aesthetic that continues over the long player's fifty-five minute tenure. Experimental and expansive joints such as "Odd Chill" and "Strange Directions" sit comfortably alongside funkier techno jams such as "Thin Hype" and "Zero Sum", whilst the melancholic synth sensibilities of tracks like "Hip Hopeless" and "Axial Mode Beat" catches DMX Krew in fine form. Another fine set of highly polished and visionary electronic goodies from one of the scene's most dedicated and consistent players. Comes in a full picture, reverse board jacket; Includes download code. BEACH BULLIES, THEWe Rule The Universe LP $22.99LP version. "From 1975 -1979, things were going well for James A. Smith, musically speaking. He was writing prolifically, getting encouragement from his contemporaries -- namely, his friend Robyn Hitchcock of The Soft Boys -- and his band, The Containers, had recorded some promising demos and were playing regular live gigs. But, by January of 1980, The Containers disbanded suddenly, and James was on his own. 'Sod it!' he thought, and, rather than waste time lamenting the situation, he plotted a new course as a solo artist. Armed only with his guitar, a drum machine and his flatmate's girlfriend, Jill Fricker, to sing backup vocals, James forged ahead with his new project: The Beach Bullies. The Beach Bullies somehow manage to sound simultaneously classic and exceptionally ahead of their time. Fans of kindred spirits from the same era, such as The Television Personalities, Young Marble Giants, and yes, The Soft Boys, will find much to admire in The Beach Bullies. On the other hand, their alternating vocals, stripped-down aesthetic and minimal arrangements will also appeal to fans of artists who would emerge much later, such as The Vaselines, The Pastels, Shop Assistants and Small Factory. In their brief time together, The Beach Bullies recorded one full-length LP, We Rule The Universe, on Musclebound Records in 1980, along with a series of demos, and some rough mixes intended for a follow-up release that never came to fruition. These comprehensive additional recordings are all available as digital downloads with purchase of this LP. Original copies of the LP sell for more than $40 on the second-hand market, and the bonus tracks have never been released previously. The LP insert also includes previously unreleased photos of James and Jill from the time of the recordings, along with witty liner notes from James himself, giving the full scoop on how this unique record came to be in the first place. Available again for the first time since 1981 on vinyl." THOMAS, PATThe Elephant Clock of Al Jazari LP $26.99Recorded live at OTO in May 2015, The Elephant Clock Of Al Jazari comprises four typically genre-defying and sonically dexterous pieces from one of the UK's best pianists. Pat Thomas began playing piano at the age of eight. He studied classical music and reggae was an early interest. Thomas was inspired to take up jazz after seeing legendary pianist Oscar Peterson on television. By 1979, Thomas was performing seriously as an improviser. In 1980, he became a member of Oxford-based group Ghosts with Pete McPhail and Matt Lewis. He has worked with Mike Cooper, Jimmy Carl Black, Thurston Moore, Mats Gustafsson, Evan Parker, Alan Silva, John Zorn, and more. Pat Thomas received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Composers in 2014. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi. Edition of 500. In Thomas's own words: "The title for this album, was inspired by the incredible automatic water clock invented by Badi' al-Zaman ibn al-Razzaz al-Jazari. Al Jazari refers to the fact he was born in Al Jazira which lies between the Tigris and the Euphrates in what is now Northern Iraq. Badi al Zaman means prodigy of the age. He is known by historians of technology as the father of modern robotics. The Elephant Clock at seven meters high is a testament to his engineering genius, it utilizes Greek water raising technology, combined with an Indian elephant, Egyptian phoenix, Arabian figures, Persian carpet and Chinese Dragons celebrating the diversity of cultures in the world. This and other marvels of engineering can be found in his Book of the Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices translated by Donald Hill (Pakistan Hijra Council). Over 50 devices are mentioned. Amongst them the first analog computer, his remarkable Castle Clock, however, the debt the world owes this Muslim genius is found in his remarkable water raising devices, particularly water raising device number '4' where for the first time a crank connecting rod system is used. The crank is considered to be the most important single mechanical device after the wheel, by 1206 this is found fully developed in Jazari`s machines predating Francesco di Giorgio Martini by three centuries. 'For Al Haytham' is dedicated to the great polymath genius who wrote the great book on vision, the first person to give us a true understanding of how we see. 'Lubb' is an Arabic word meaning innermost consciousness whilst to conclude proceedings 'Done' is loosely based on a well-known standard." ARAGORNNight Is Burning LP $29.99There are few bands who can claim to have built their reputation on one single, but such is the situation for Aragorn, formed in Chesire in 1978. They were one of the first acts to sign to Neat Records as the new wave of British heavy metal erupted. But fate conspired to ensure that they only ever released one single, the killer Black Ice/Noonday (1981), which has definitely become something of a cult 45 among aficionados of the genre. Here it is, along with 12 tracks taken from a then unreleased album from 1982-83. A must for anyone into obscure, '70s styled hard-rock, and early metal. RIYL: New wave of British heavy metal, Angel Witch, Motörhead, Witchfynde, Black Sabbath. Remastered sound; Insert with liner notes and photos. LOMBARD, CLAUDEChante LP $29.99LP version. Sommor Records present the first reissue of Claude Lombard's Chante, originally released in 1969. Presented in the original French edition gatefold artwork. Produced by Roland Kluger (Chakachas, Free Pop Electronic Concept), arranged by Willy Albymoor and recorded at the legendary Madeleine Studios in Brussels. Insert with liner notes by pop connoisseur Don Sicalíptico. RIYL: Stereolab, Broadcast, White Noise, Delia Derbyshire, Astrud Gilberto, Roger Webb Sound. "If you know the 1968 Eurovision song, or the TV kids cartoons tunes which Claude Lombard sang, it will be hard to believe what's happening there... Beautiful pop songs sung in French by this Belgian maverick (who worked with Luciano Berio) swirling upon wonderful '60s abstract-expressionism orchestrations: chimes and ondes Martenots among lovely dream basslines and organ drifting, with a dreamy use of echoes, reverbs and sometimes electronics. There are incredibly beautiful songs here, and probably one of the unique examples of French songs with really gorgeous, untypical sound work, closer to some UK and US proto-psychedelic orchestration in pop world. It was by the time a complete commercial flop... A shame of course considering the quality of compositions offered here by Claude Lombard herself, who have no shame to feel if one compares the elegance of her work to an inspired and electronic version of Michel Legrand... Any serious fan of Broadcast or Stereolab will fall in love forever with this true secret gem, to say the least... And no need to mention the kaleidoscopic design of the cover, mesmerizing and perfectly illustrating the content. Masterpiece here? Hell yes! And you can forget about the cartoon tunes of your lazy childhood..." --Emmanuel Holterbach STONE, CARLElectronic Music From The Seventies And Eighties 3LP $45.99"This 3LP set contains a selection of seven early works by American composer Carl Stone, all previously unpublished except for 'Shing Kee,' which appeared on the 1992 New Albion CD release, Mom's. Notorious, formerly elusive recordings like 'Sukothai,' 'Shibucho,' and 'Dong Il Jang' exemplify how Stone masterfully guided his art through the transition period when New Music exited the loft scene of the 1970s for a stab at commercial presence in the 1980s, satisfying both impulses by fusing his compositional ambition with systems of live performance that were simultaneously pop savvy, commercial suicide, and technologically and aesthetically forward thinking. His live performance practice, documented here in a carefully restored archival recording of 'Kuk Il Kwan' at The Kitchen in 1981, has merged seamlessly with today's computer-driven methods. The earliest works of this collection, 'LIM' and 'Chao Praya,' realized on the Buchla 200, date to the early 1970s while Stone was a student of James Tenney and Morton Subotnick at CalArts, a rare glimpse of Stone working with purely electronic source material. Liner notes by Carl Stone, Jonathan Gold, Richard Gehr, and Marc Weidenbaum accompany on a gatefold sleeve. Download card is included with a digital-only bonus track, 'Unthaitled' from 1978. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker. 'Of the serious composers to come out of 1980s California, Carl Stone is the one who has always performed in nightclubs as well as concert halls, for spiky-haired punks as well as the Ph.D-and-ponytail set -- his brand of electro-acoustic bricolage was probably better known among jazz musicians than it was to the blue-haired Monday Evening Concerts crowd.' --Jonathan Gold, from the liner notes." TUNES AT NOONevery thursday at 12 noon in dearborn city hall park at the corner of michigan ave and schaeferone hour of free music - bring your lunch and enjoy some fun in the sun!! 8/3 Libby DeCamp"Libby DeCamp makes dusty folk and American Roots-inspired music with a lyrical edge and a classic three-piece energy, delivered with a haunting vocal closeness that reaches listeners of all kinds. Sweetly soulful "Broken Folk." 8/10 Michael Malis TrioMichael Malis is a pianist and composer based in Detroit, MI. Malis bridges the gap between original composed, complex material and the spontaneity of improvisation. His trio (piano, bass, drums), featured on his latest album, has toured in the United States and Canada, and in September 2016, they performed at the Detroit International Jazz Festival. 8/17 Viands "Viands is a spontaneous collaboration between two auteurs of Detroit's underground music scene: Joel Peterson and David Shettler. The music they create is a deep, reflective and fearless alternate-reality keyboard meditation that draws on the pair's broad musical vision to explore new vistas.
