"In cities across the country, people of color, many of them low income, live in neighborhoods criss-crossed by major thoroughfares and highways.
The housing there is often cheaper — it’s not considered particularly desirable to wake up amid traffic fumes and fall asleep to the rumble of vehicles over asphalt.
But the price of living there is steep: Exhaust from all those cars and trucks leads to higher rates of childhood asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and pulmonary ailments. Many people die younger than they otherwise would have, and the medical costs and time lost to illness contributes to their poverty.
Imagine if none of those cars and trucks emitted any fumes at all, running instead on an electric charge. That would make a staggering difference in the trajectory, quality, and length of millions of lives, particularly those of young people growing up near freeways and other sources of air pollution, according to a study from the American Lung Association.
The study, released [February 28, 2024], found that a widespread transition to EVs could avoid nearly 3 million asthma attacks and hundreds of infant deaths, in addition to millions of lower and upper respiratory ailments...
Prior research by the American Lung Association found that 120 million people in the U.S. breathe unhealthy air daily, and 72 million live near a major trucking route — though, Barret added, there’s no safe threshold for air pollution. It affects everyone.
Bipartisan efforts to strengthen clean air standards have already made a difference across the country. In California, which, under the Clean Air Act, can set state rules stronger than national standards, 100 percent of new cars sold there must be zero emission by 2035.
[Note: The article doesn't explain this, but that is actually a much bigger deal than just California. Basically, due to historically extra terrible pollution, California is the only state that's allowed to allowed to set stronger emissions rules than the US government sets. However, one of the rules in the Clean Air Act is that any other state can choose to follow California's standards instead of the US government's. And California by itself is the world's fifth largest economy - ahead of all but four countries. California has a lot of buying power. So, between those two things, when California sets stricter standards for cars, the effects ripple outward massively, far beyond the state's borders.]
Truck manufacturers are, according to the state’s Air Resources Board, already exceeding anticipated zero-emissions truck sales, putting them two years ahead of schedule...
Other states have begun to take action, too, often reaching across partisan lines to do so. Maryland, Colorado, New Mexico, and Rhode Island adopted zero-emissions standards as of the end of 2023.
The Biden administration is taking similar steps, though it has slowed its progress after automakers and United Auto Workers pressured the administration to relax some of its more stringent EV transition requirements.
While Barret finds efforts to support the electrification of passenger vehicles exciting, he said the greatest culprits are diesel trucks. “These are 5 to 10 percent of the vehicles on the road, but they’re generating the majority of smog-forming emissions of ozone and nitrogen,” Barret said...
Lately, there’s been significant progress on truck decarbonization. The Biden administration has made promises to ensure that 30 percent of all big rigs sold are electric by 2030...
Such measures, combined with an increase in public EV charging stations, vehicle tax credits, and other incentives, could change American highways, not to mention health, for good."

Ontario is expanding its respiratory virus vaccination program this year for infants, high-risk children and pregnant women ahead of the fall flu season. The government announced Thursday that it would be significantly expanding eligibility for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines as it aims to protect at-risk children and mothers from the potentially serious virus. Beginning in the fall, families with infants and high-risk children two years old or younger will be able to access a publicly funded RSV vaccine. Pregnant women will be eligible for a similar shot that can protect their child for six months after birth. “To be ready for this year’s respiratory illness season, we all need to take the simple and effective steps to protect the most vulnerable people in our communities and our health care system,” Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, said in a statement. “RSV is a highly contagious virus that causes infections of the respiratory tract, especially in the very young and older members of our communities.” Moore said the expansion means all high-risk children aged 24 months and younger will be eligible for protection this coming fall.

Yet another study showing increased complications for women who get covid during pregnancy. The ill effects extended to both the mothers and the infants with an increase in pre-term labor, stillbirth, preeclampsia, and postpartum bleed.
"Just a cold."
Abstract Objectives This study aims to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on pregnancy and labor, focusing on its effects on maternal and child health. The research explores the relationships between coronavirus infection and clinical and laboratory parameters, as well as the risks of pregnancy complications and adverse birth outcomes.
Methods The study involved 60 pregnant women diagnosed with COVID-19. A comprehensive evaluation of clinical and laboratory indicators was conducted, employing correlation, regression, logistic analyses to determine risk factors.
Results There was a strong inverse correlation between carbon dioxide levels and haematocrit (−0.76), and a direct correlation between blood pH and partial pressure of oxygen (0.73). COVID-19 was associated with increased risks of preterm labor (OR=1.82), stillbirth (OR=2.11), pre-eclampsia (OR=1.46), and foetal distress. Multivariate analysis revealed a 200 g reduction in neonatal birth weight and higher risks of hospitalisation (OR=1.8), postpartum hemorrhage (OR=2.3), and preterm delivery (OR=2.5). Comorbid conditions such as cardiovascular abnormalities, diabetes, obesity, thrombophilias exacerbated the risks of complications, including pre-eclampsia, neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, venous thromboembolism.
Conclusions COVID-19 infection increases the likelihood of pregnancy complications and adverse outcomes, especially in women with comorbidities. These findings highlight the need for preventive strategies and risk management protocols for pregnant women during future outbreaks, emphasizing the importance of further research in this field.

@hjea said we deserved more adorable half-Vulcan baby and that is 100% correct. So here’s what can be considered a missing scene or if you prefer you can say 🖕 to canon and consider it the opening of a fix-it.
Phlox had been notified of their imminent arrival, but nothing could have fully prepared him for the sight that greeted him as the doors to Sickbay parted. A pinched-face Commander T’Pol clutched an infant protectively to her chest as she strode in, flanked by Captain Archer and Commander Tucker. Commander Tucker had a hand on her back and concerned eyes focused on the baby’s profile. A brief look of pain flashed across his face indicating to Phlox that he may soon have two patients. Captain Archer wore his fight face. Behind them trailed a stricken Ensign Mayweather and a stoic Lieutenant Reed. All of them appeared dirty and dishevelled.
The tiny girl stared at everything around her with wide blue eyes reminiscent of her father’s as she chewed one chubby fist. It brought to mind Sim as a baby, but of course there was no time to dwell on that now. The upswept brows and delicately pointed ears were all her mother, the doctor noted.
“Well, what have we here?” Phlox greeted T’Pol when she stopped before him. He passed a handheld scanner in front of his young patient.
“She is gravely ill, Doctor. Her immune system appears to be severely compromised,” T’Pol informed him as she gently bounced the baby in her arms. It was somewhat less graceful than her usual movements in Phlox’s estimation, but he could nonetheless see the care in her touch. The baby gave a rattling cough as if to confirm her mother’s assessment.
“I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask everyone who is not a patient - or the parent of a patient - to leave,” Phlox ordered as the scanner whirred.
Lieutenant Reed nodded at T’Pol and Phlox, and then whispered something to Commander Tucker before giving him a supportive squeeze on his shoulder as he passed. The resulting grimace on the engineer‘s face confirmed Phlox's earlier suspicions about patient count. Ensign Mayweather had evidently already had the good sense to slip out unnoticed.
“You’ll inform me as soon as you know anything,” the captain confirmed as he briefly caught the doctor’s eye. “I’ll check on you all soon.”
T’Pol gave no acknowledgement as she rubbed the baby’s back rhythmically to soothe her.
“Take care, Trip,” Jonathan added with an encouraging smile.
“Aye, Cap’n,” Trip responded with the ghost of a smile as he briefly tore his eyes away from T’Pol and their child.
Phlox glanced down at the scanner in concern before he addressed the new parents. “She has a respiratory infection. We’ll start with some medication - a mild analgesic, antibiotic, and expectorant. I’d like to see that fever reduced quickly. Depending how she responds over the next hour we may move onto a more aggressive treatment for her lungs including placing her in an oxygen rich environment.”
As he moved across to the cabinet to prepare the medication Phlox could hear the soft timbre of Commander Tucker’s voice. “She’s heavier than she looks. You want me to take her for a bit?”
“I’m fine,” T’Pol said softly. Trip must have looked ready to argue because she continued quickly, “you are injured, Trip. I will hold her… but perhaps you’d like to touch her or speak to her?”
When Phlox returned he was loath to interrupt the scene before him. The two parents stood close with their heads canted toward each other. The baby had dropped her head against her mother’s chest and was drooling peacefully as her father stroked her hair and cheek and whispered quiet words of reassurance. In less fraught circumstances Phlox would have taken amusement in the sight of the normally impeccably groomed Vulcan with a patch of spittle spreading on her clothing.
“I’ve got an injection ready,” he said as he approached the family. “This should ease her discomfort and allow her to sleep more soundly. I’ll also take a blood sample.”
The child made an irritated squawk when the needle pierced her skin and she shifted her head to give Phlox the most dignified look of pouty-lipped disdain he’d ever seen on a baby.
Apparently she would take after both her parents in temperament as well as appearance, Phlox thought wryly.
“Shhh now, you’re all right, little one. I know it’s no fun getting jabbed, but the doc here is gonna help you feel a lot better.”
T’Pol turned pleading eyes toward the doctor as she gently rocked the baby.
He would certainly do his best.
“Commanders,” Phlox said gently as he prepared to analyse the blood of Enterprise's newest resident. “This will take some time. I won’t ask you to rest now, but it would be a good idea to refresh yourselves somewhat and get comfortable…” he trailed off as he nodded toward the chairs along the wall.
Their reluctance to leave was palpable. Phlox could understand it well, but they would be better able to care for their newfound daughter if they first looked after their own needs.
He glanced back to see the two commanders locked in an apparent staring contest. Before he could make a stronger appeal, Commander Tucker gave a faint sigh.
“All right. You two go sit in one of Phlox’s comfy chairs. I’m gonna go wash the moon dust off and grab a cup of coffee. When I get back I’m gonna bring you a change of clothes and a cup of tea, and you’re gonna take a break for ten minutes,” he informed T’Pol rather intensely. Phlox expected Vulcan indignance, but instead she only nodded in response. That was interesting.
Satisfied, Trip leaned down to gently stroke his daughter’s cheek. “I’ll be right back. You be good for your mama,” he whispered. T’Pol’s eyes widened slightly, and he gave her a faintly bewildered smile. “I know. It's surreal. But you’re her mom.”
“And you are her father,” she replied seriously.
A bright grin spread over Trip’s face. “I am,” he said, wonder evident in his tone. His voice dropped back down,”You’re doing great, T’Pol.” He rubbed her arm.
“Ok, Doc,” he said a bit louder. “Keep an eye on these Vulcan girls for me. I’ll be back in twenty minutes, tops.” He paused to kiss the sleepy infant on her head and the startled mother on her lips.
Phlox politely averted his eyes and hid his grin as he focused on the screen at his workstation. “Commander,” he called out as Trip reached the door. “I'm going to take a look at that shoulder when you get back.” At the dark muttering he heard in response, Phlox allowed himself a small smile before frowning at the data loading before him.
The baby’s eyes were starting to drift closed, and he could hear T’Pol speaking quietly to her as she paced.
“Your father is very physically affectionate.” There was a pause. “We will adapt.”
“You still need a name,” T’Pol murmured to the child. “I have something in mind. We will discuss it with your father when he returns.”

i'm just so tired of every summer being a shitshow. i grew up going to jasper every second weekend in the winter, i love that town. i know people who live there, people who are displaced currently and who might not have houses after tonight. i remember the fort mac fire in 2016 and how devastating that was, and now we're seeing that in multiples across the province every year to the point where there's almost no room to grieve over every single one of them
i am so sick of people not caring until the smoke hits them. i am so sick of people saying trudeau is ordering the fires when daniel smith is RIGHT there, when she cut funding to firefighters during a province wide state of emergency. i'm so lucky to live far enough away from the forest protection area that i don't have to worry about being evacuated or losing my home, but there have been moments where i've wondered if i should pack a bag
my grandfather has copd and has to live in this smoke. i'm scared of what breathing in this much smoke is doing to my own lungs, let alone the lungs of infants, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses. i cannot fathom how people can live in alberta and not take the climate change issue seriously. this isn't going to stop anytime soon. this year, fire season started earlier than i think it ever has. it's just gonna get worse.
#sorry for the rant im just. AHHHHH#ive been texting my friend whose been evacuated and i'm having big feelings about it#the fire is at the edge of town and i dont think they'll be able to stop it#im not even sure if everyone i know is safe or not#i am so wildly stressed out and angry#alberta wildfires#jasper national park

So, between those two things, when California sets stricter standards for cars, they effects ripple outward massively, far beyond the state's borders.]

CDC recommends everyone ages 75 and older get an RSV vaccine.
CDC recommends adults ages 60–74 who are at increased risk of severe RSV disease get an RSV vaccine.
The RSV vaccine is not currently an annual vaccine. If you have received an RSV vaccine already (including last year), you should not get another RSV vaccine at this time.
You can get one at any time, but the best time to get vaccinated is in late summer and early fall.
Conditions that increase your risk for severe illness include:
Chronic heart or lung disease
Weakened immune system
Certain other medical conditions
Living in a nursing home
To protect infants and some young children, CDC recommends the maternal vaccine (Pfizer’s Abrysvo) for pregnant people during weeks 32–36 of pregnancy, or an RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab) for babies given after birth and for some young children ages 8–19 months.
Adults who get RSV usually have mild or no symptoms. Symptoms are usually consistent with an upper respiratory tract infection, which can include rhinorrhea, pharyngitis, cough, headache, fatigue, and fever. Milder illness in adults typically resolves in 1–2 weeks. However, RSV can also cause severe disease and hospitalization in adults.
RSV can sometimes also lead to exacerbation of serious conditions such as:
Asthma
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Heart failure
Epidemiologic evidence indicates that all adults ages 75 or older and adults ages 60–74 with certain risk factors are at increased risk of severe RSV.
Conditions that increase the risk for severe RSV
The following conditions increase the risk of severe RSV:*
Chronic cardiovascular disease (e.g., heart failure, coronary artery disease, or congenital heart disease [excluding isolated hypertension])
Chronic lung or respiratory disease (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, asthma, interstitial lung disease, or cystic fibrosis)
End-stage renal disease or dependence on hemodialysis or other renal replacement therapy
Diabetes mellitus complicated by chronic kidney disease, neuropathy, retinopathy, or other end-organ damage, or requiring treatment with insulin or sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor
Neurologic or neuromuscular conditions causing impaired airway clearance or respiratory muscle weakness (e.g., poststroke dysphagia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or muscular dystrophy [excluding history of stroke without impaired airway clearance])
Chronic liver disease (e.g., cirrhosis)
Chronic hematologic conditions (e.g., sickle cell disease or thalassemia)
Severe obesity (body mass index ≥40 kg/m2)
Moderate or severe immune compromise†
Residence in a nursing home
Other chronic medical conditions or risk factors that a health care provider determines would increase the risk for severe disease due to viral respiratory infection (e.g., frailty,§ situations in which health care providers have concern for presence of undiagnosed chronic medical conditions, or residence in a remote or rural community where transportation of patients with severe RSV disease for escalation of medical care is challenging¶)
