it was pirate weekend at the ren faire last weekend, so here’s me and my brother as Nami and cabin-boy Shanks :) (faces redacted for privacy lol)
Tumblr media
also shoutout to the other one piece cosplayers we saw, including:
- somebody in a full Franky bodysuit in like 90 degree (F) heat
- vice-admiral Garp, (at pirate weekend) complete with dog hat
- some guy who might have been Mihawk but also might have just been wearing a black hat with a feather and a cross necklace??
and last but certainly not least:
- a tiny little Luffy who barely came up to my hip when we took a picture together, did the iconic Shanks + Luffy pose with my brother, and when I saw him later in the day I heard his dad say “look, there’s Nami!” and he waved at me… it was so cute I literally almost cried 😭

In Rennaisance Italy, the segno giallo ("yellow sign") referred to the yellow veil that the law required prostitutes to wear in Florence, Venice, and other cities. The courtesan and poet Tulia d'Aragona (1510-1556) used that precise expression preparing her petition to Grand Duke Cosimo I (1519-1574) of Florence for an exemption. A student of the Old Masters like Chambers may well have known of this particular symbol, which appears in works by Bugiardini, Veneziano, and especially Titian. The connection between the Yellow Sign and sexual immorality is clearest in this story [The Yellow Sign.]

1, 4, 12, 24, 25!!! for the historical asks :D @brawngp2009
Ask me about my historical interests :D
TAN!!!! Tysm for the ask 🥺🥺 God, I'd love to answer all these questions tbh, they're so fun!!!
1. Who is your favourite historical person?
I have a few 🤭🤭 HRE Charles VI, Napoleon Bonaparte, T.E. Lawrence. There's others I like of course, but those are definitely the three I research the most! Also I'm inherently fascinated with most Habsburgs from like, 1400 to 1800, but its tough to research in depth about all of them :,)
4. Favourite historical era?
Right now, either the late Baroque period or WWI, since that's what I primarily read about these days. But I have a huge love for the Napoleonic Era, and I'd really like to delve deep into it soon, but it's just so vast! I also have a fondness for the early Rennaisance period of the Habsburgs, its genuinely so funny and unhinged, I need to read more. But yeah the Baroque period in Austria/HRE and right now, the Middle Eastern Theater of WWI, since I'm deep in a book about it rn. The latter haunts me all the time, I have too many thoughts and feelings about it ;;;
12. Would you take part in reenactment? In what era and as whom?
Maybe??? Gah, honestly the opportunity to dress up in any kind of historical clothing or uniforms is sooooo appealing to me. I get so incredibly jealous watching vids of people who only wear historical clothing or people who get to dress in full historical uniform. I think it'd be fun to either go to a Baroque masquerade or to participate in like a Napoleonic Wars or WWI reenactment :D I'm mostly just interested in the clothes icl
24. Most underrated historical figure?
Hmmm honestly I think so much about the narrative in this one J.C. Leyendecker book I have. How Norman Rockwell did everything he could to copy what Leyendecker was doing. Yet everyone only ever really talks about Rockwell now, in terms of America Illustration, and Leydendecker is so much lesser known, which is frustrating. So yeah I wish people would give him more credit for how much he shaped American imagery and advertising. He popularized, to name a few: depiction of Santa as a bearded jolly man dressed in red, the New Years being represented by a baby, etc. As well as popularizing an idealized look for men through his advertising art.
25. Most overrated historical figure in your opinion?
I've talked about this a lot but I'm so fucking tired of hearing about Franz Joseph and Sisi and the era of the Austro-Hungary monarchy. They're not necessarily uninteresting, but it pisses me off how over-represented they are when discussing Habsburg and Austrian history as a whole, and the way people act like its the only meaningful era of Habsburg/Austrian history to study. If you go to Vienna, they are Habsburgs fanatics, BUT MOSTLY ONLY FOR THAT ERA.
I swear to god, every Habsburg biography dedicates half of the book to Austro-Hungary and crams ~400+ years of history into the other half. Theres so many fascinating figures and moments in those 400 years but nope, let only talk about Franz Joseph. The infernal rage I feel opening books titled "The Habsburgs" and yet its just the late 1800s-early 1900s. All of this combined has really soured me on that era and I have no interest in it really. Also I kinda despise most if not all monarchies post-Napoleon, they become unfun to me after that point.

Big earrings, big cards - Jan 30, 2024
Wearing heavy earrings today means I'm feeling pretty good. These big angel/bird wings are some of the heaviest I own. Sometimes I really like the weight. More often, I like the feeling when they hit me, as I move my head side to side. I also enjoy jingly chimes, when the two pairs hit together. Hm, I need to dig out my fav combo of jingly earrings now.
Maybe a decade ago, a flickr contact sent me this set of oracle cards (like tarot but not based on the usual Rider-Waite arcana). They feature Rennaisance and Pre-Raphalite paintings and come with a book to help guide a "reading".
I like to use it as a way to figure out stuff in my head, just a personal journey into how my insight and first-reactions are skewed in the moment.
And yes, last week's nail polish is very chipped. All but one had chipped until just last night. Right-pinky, you were the strongest of them all! *dramatic tears*

OK, but why is Agatha wearing slashed sleeves in the 1400's? Don't leave us hanging.
I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED
(images and historical costuming infodump under the cut because you have unfortunately unearthed ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first and foremost: it's some real
1519 hot-girl shit
that's why
(all the early-rennaisance girliepops were cutting up their clothes and showing off their camicia/shift/léine)
secondly (with a TL;DR at the bottom)
since this is a mixed-era fantasy setting, i wanted to really show that off with some NIFTY GARB.
we're spanning about 1350-1520, but MOST people are sitting comfortably in the middle to late 1400s, with some purposeful exceptions*. everyone is wearing something different, there's a lot of emphasis on crossover between countries and routes of trade that literally only make sense in a fantasy setting.
(*for example, people make fun of the mage for wearing a houppelande, because it's definitely out of fashion by 1450 and i thought it would be a fun little parallel to draw for his robin-hood costume.)
WITH ALL OF THAT CONTEXT
i made agatha's parents merchants (i thought it was a neat little nod to the traveling christmas party thing from the books, and it drew them a little bit closer to the inciting incident) which means she's simultaneously able to get the absolute cutting edge of fashion for the era if she wants, and under the scrutiny of her parents (who are both in a public-facing and extremely social-currency-based profession)
there's kind of a background argument in one of the earlier chapters between her and penny about it: agatha's in trouble with her mother for wearing too many slashes in her sleeves, penny thinks slashed sleeves and petticoats are superficial and impractical (the new modern hoopskirt is where it's at, if you wear skirts!), agatha scoffs because why in the world would she have a saffron-dyed, embroidered shift if she wasn't going to SHOW IT TO PEOPLE???
the thing about slashed/paned sleeves, in general, is that they were considered kind of uncouth at the time. slutty, one might argue! they were designed specifically to reveal small sections of your shirt or chemise, and if you're showing off your expensive undergarments too much people might talk.
it would have been considered very fashionable for agatha to have a few slits in her sleeves-
(sometimes women wore them in their bodices, but agatha wears a fancy schmancy stomacher in this so that's not relevant.)
-but too many of them in a single garment would start to suggest things about her character, in the attitude of the era. given that her parents have hangups about her behavior and propriety, it's supposed to have kind of a "YOUNG LADY YOU ARE NOT GOING OUT IN THAT" vibe. it's the kind of thing people were banned from entering churches for.
her mother is irritated because even if it's fashionable, it's not 1500s classy fashionable, and i'm hoping it kind of carries the same narrative weight as them finding her shoplifting habit very common and disappointing, but not actually punishing her for it because their disapproval and her perceived failure to conform are punishment enough. (purple varnish!)
TL;DR-
compared to the 21st-century idea of modesty agatha's outfit as i envision it would be considered downright matronly, but for the time period?
it's basically the equivalent of wearing an open white button-down shirt to show off a cute (and grotesquely expensive) designer bralette.
(and everyone has an opinion about it and she's getting pretty sick of constantly being posed for portraits and told what to do by people who've already decided her entire future for her.)

Just thinking of someone talking to John like:
"Hey we're gods now, what's that supposed to be like?"
Some convoluted conversation that gets the kids meditating on how Earth dealt with divinity and John gets dared to bring them all to like the fucking Rennaissance or Ancient Greece - they probably in the end decided to this chronologically to avoid headaches later
One Retcon trip later and they're in Ancient Greece, Rose and Kanaya have hooked up with Sappho. They fast forward to the Rennaisance, Dirk hooks up with Leonardo da Vinci. They go to like the Victorian era, and Jake gets to live out his fantasy as an "intrepid British explorer", wearing that classic 1800s beige jungle adventurer. Jane happily joins Jake in the Victorian era but only to solve the Jack the Ripper and other mysteries.
They make the Frog Island (aka the Harlish island) their home base, making sure to erase their homes when they leave so baby Jade and old Jake won't realize this was lived in.
They never travel past the 1900s. But they enjoy just about all the other eras that happen before the Earliest Referenced Event in Canon - which is when Condie arrives to marry Colonel Sassacre and raise the meteor kids.
Jade probably learns to sail from the ancient Polynesians as they canvas the pacific. John probably does the same - he has a fantastic time in the Age of Sails. Dave ends up dabbling in ancient Chinese slam poetry. I can't think of a specific time period that Roxy and Callie would like, so maybe they just join whoever wherever whenever.
I'm sure Roxy was with Rose to mess with Freud when he first becomes known. Maybe Callie hangs out with Dirk in the Wild West bc Dirk is here for the ponies and Callie is here for the stories.
They learn Earth as it was before it was fully controlled by canon. And as they explore and they experience new things, maybe they find other people to share their stories with. People with very little understanding of what a video game is but people have been empathetic and compassionate since they were cavemen.
It gets messy. They nearly blow their cover (and actually did a couple of times). But because canon hyperfocused on such few locations, their best friends in the Caucus steppes or on Madagascar island can know of their stories and die with their stories without ever affecting canon.
They can spend effectively hundreds of years as "normal" person who will never have their names praised in song. And ultimately they will run out of time periods to hide in. The 1900s will arrive. They could either wait to the very last minute to leave or they can go just a little early.
They could also extend their detour to hide in Alternia. But probably not bc Doc Scratch monitors that place too closely.
Either way, John zaps them back to Earth C at the second they left. Now theyre full grown. Maybe they had mortal children. Maybe they didnt. But at last, its time for them to take charge of their godhood. And maybe they bring relics from all the time periods they visited. Maybe they have a better understanding of governance that they pass on to their new world.
But here, at least this time, they get the space to grow - surrounded by a multitude of influences instead of cannibalizing each other for parts. Maybe that makes them wiser. Maybe that makes their mistakes worse - enough to make the Candy and Meat timeline decisions child's play in comparison. Maybe they all decide to manage their civilizations. Maybe they leave it behind and never look back.
But they will have changed for better or worse, no longer freshly printed from skaia's playbook.
Let's put those retcon powers to work.
The new universe is created, blah blah blah. John and co enter. Then he *immediately* zaps everyone to whatever fucking century he wants in pre-scratch Earth. The kids get to grow up with a bigger community, people who could help?? with the trauma???
and then when theyre all grown up and immortal, they can zap back to the End Game as fully realized gods
AND IT WOULD BE SO FUNNY
if they started a lowkey cult on earth where they promise paradise (really theyre just gonna bring them to Earth C, saving them from The Apocalypse, and giving them a Fresh Start)
they would be one of those whack job doomsday cults
so thats plot A and plot B and then plot C is that theyre desperately trying to avoid Condie while theyre on Earth so as not to Completely Retcon the story. Theyre hiding in between the start of canon and the earliest referenced time of canon.
