just had an airport experience so evil that i literally openly cried from like 10min after deplaning all the way through customs etc until halfway through the train ride back to the city 👍
#almost lost my bag first of all bc they did a weird confusing valet check#then i'd asked for wheelchair assistance but they just left one at the gate and nobody would help me bc ig i didn't request it properly?#and none of the wheelchair ppl even knew who to ask???#and we were in a weird remote part of the airport so i was just wandering around lost and ended up having to go so far#like i survived with just my cane i Can walk it didn't hurt that bad but. it could've hurt less!!#NONE of this was helped by it being the first time i ever seriously tried to use a wheelchair in public. was already scared#anyway. fuck airports. at least i'm home#p

Read a fic once where Jason survived, but he had mobility issues, so he was in wheelchair for a while, and when Tim showed up he was rightfully upset and got into an argument with Bruce, and Alfred just straight up pushed him out of the goddamn room.
I haven't been so infuriated by a scene in a fic in a long, long time. Especially since the whole thing was never addressed. Like, I literally had to put down my phone and take a breather to calm myself, I was so upset.
#been spending a lot of time in the hospital recently#and watching people not know how to deal with people in wheelchairs made me think of this#like#if im standing in your way would you feel as entitled to just straight up move me as you do a person in a wheelchair???#in what world is that even remotely ok???#jesus#disabilties#differently abled#jason todd#robin#red hood

#if they won't admit i need more than a clunky standard wheelchair i doubt theyre gonna give me therapy#but im at such a low im starting to resent my fiance for making me stay alive anymore#and none of my friends remotely give a shit as soon as theres anything up with me mentally#so i guess this is where its taking me. fucking NHS talking therapy is potentially my only source of help#which really just says a lot about how bad its gotten#delete later

also most ramps that ARE added arent even safe or built to regulation standards making them extremely inaccesible despite the fact that the Entire Point of adding a ramp is supposed to be accessibility
maybe it's pendantic but it annoys me when ppl say stuff like accessibility is more than just adding a ramp, bc like they are not even adding ramps bestie. like that's not being provided in 9/10 situations
#do you know how many times ive seen people in wheelchairs struggle to get up a ramp or need to be pushed bc theyre too steep?#and going down them is terrifying bc its really hard to fight gravity#the ramp at my job isnt even regulation and we are a facility FOR DISABLED PEOPLE#in my town there is No wheelchair ramp to even get into city hall#& most of the desks are too tall for someone in a wheelchair to see over even if they could get inside#which is unbelievable because thats where you have to go in order to receive a disabled parking placard#like idk where people got the idea that people are adding ramps or that the ramps they Do add are remotely safe#but to me that reads as: i dont actually know any wheelchair users & am making this assumption based on....idk.. movies or smth#like please just talk to people outside of your own demographic

How a Remote Control Wheelchair Can Enhance Your Independence
Introduction to Remote Control Wheelchairs
As someone who values independence, I understand the challenges that individuals with limited mobility face on a daily basis. However, thanks to advancements in technology, there is a solution that can significantly enhance your independence: the remote control wheelchair. In this article, I will delve into the world of remote control wheelchairs, exploring their benefits, how they enhance independence, and the different types available. By the end, you will gain a deeper understanding of how these innovative devices can provide freedom at your fingertips.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ae12771101846bb5a74ed12613cc90d0/73289e86985f947f-ec/s540x810/43cb6977745aa9084bcf7f918faa6a0ab02b829f.jpg)
The Benefits of Using a Remote Control Wheelchair
When it comes to utilizing a remote control wheelchair, there are numerous benefits that can greatly improve the quality of life for those with limited mobility. Firstly, these wheelchairs offer increased convenience. With just a touch of a button, you can easily maneuver the wheelchair, eliminating the need for physical effort or assistance from others. This newfound convenience allows you to navigate through your daily activities with ease, whether it be at home, work, or in public spaces.
Moreover, remote control wheelchairs offer enhanced safety. Traditional wheelchairs often require the individual to rely on others for assistance, which can be a daunting prospect. However, with a remote control wheelchair, you are in full control of your movements. This independence not only boosts your confidence but also reduces the risk of accidents or mishaps that can occur when relying on others.
Additionally, remote control wheelchairs promote social interaction. By being able to navigate independently, you can actively participate in social gatherings, outings, and events. The freedom to move around and engage with others on your terms can significantly improve your overall well-being and mental health. This newfound social inclusion can open doors to new friendships, experiences, and opportunities.
How a Remote Control Wheelchair Enhances Independence
One of the most significant ways in which a remote control wheelchair enhances independence is by providing individuals with the freedom to go wherever they desire. Whether it's exploring the great outdoors, maneuvering through crowded spaces, or simply moving freely within their own home, remote control wheelchairs empower individuals to live life on their own terms.
Moreover, remote control wheelchairs allow individuals to perform daily tasks with ease. From simple activities like grabbing a book from a shelf to more complex tasks like cooking a meal, these wheelchairs give individuals the ability to carry out their daily routines independently. This newfound freedom not only enhances their sense of self-reliance but also fosters a greater sense of accomplishment and self-esteem.
Furthermore, remote control wheelchairs provide individuals with the ability to access various environments that were previously off-limits. With features like stair-climbing capabilities and all-terrain options, individuals can now explore places that were once inaccessible. This opens up a world of possibilities, allowing individuals to fully participate in activities and experiences that were previously out of reach.
Types of Remote Control Wheelchairs
When it comes to remote control wheelchairs, there are various types available to suit different needs and preferences. One type is the standard remote control wheelchair, which offers basic functionality and maneuverability. These wheelchairs are suitable for individuals who have limited mobility but still possess the ability to control their movements effectively.
Another type is the power assist remote control wheelchair, which provides additional support and assistance. These wheelchairs are ideal for individuals who may have limited upper body strength or require extra assistance when navigating through challenging terrains or inclines. The power assist feature ensures a smoother and more controlled experience.
Lastly, there are all-terrain remote control wheelchairs, designed specifically for outdoor exploration. These wheelchairs are equipped with rugged tires, powerful motors, and advanced suspension systems, allowing individuals to conquer various terrains, including gravel paths, grassy fields, and even sandy beaches. With an all-terrain remote control wheelchair, individuals can embrace the freedom of exploring outdoor spaces without limitations.
Conclusion: Embracing Freedom with a Remote Control Wheelchair
In conclusion, a remote control wheelchair can be a life-changing device for individuals with limited mobility. The benefits of using a remote control wheelchair are vast, ranging from increased convenience and safety to enhanced social interaction. By providing individuals with the freedom to go where they please and perform daily tasks independently, these wheelchairs truly empower individuals and enhance their sense of independence.
If you are someone who values independence and desires to regain control over your mobility, consider exploring the world of remote control wheelchairs. With various types available, there is a wheelchair to suit your specific needs and preferences. Embrace the freedom at your fingertips and embark on a journey of enhanced independence with a remote control wheelchair.

People on the internet: they can't hire actors who are actually in wheelchairs to play wheelchair users in movies! What if there's a scene where they need to stand up? A wheelchair user can't do that!
Robert Rodriguez: hold my beer

This is a scene from spy kids 3 - a movie in a series famous for its shoe-string budgets, where Ricardo Montalbán's character is in a wheelchair, but spends most of his screen time in a digital reality where he doesn't need it. Ricardo Montalbán was actually in a wheelchair though in real life, so they just used a combination of VFX and camera tricks (and a dolly for a few shots) to film those scenes. Also if I remember correctly the movie ends with him back in the real world, fighting a mech with his jet-pack wheelchair lmao.
The disability rep is dated (as is the VFX lol) and does fall into a lot of tropes I personally dont like, but it's so earnest in their attempts, and the visible effort behind the scenes to include a real, disabled actor outweighs it for me - even as a kid who wasnt fully aware of why.
Bigger studios have no excuse.
I've linked the video I got these screenshots from, they talk a lot about how they handled Ricardo Montalbán's character being out of his wheelchair there. If if you like behind the scenes stuff for campy old movies, I highly recommend it!
[ID 1: a screenshot of the movie Spy kids 3D, showing Juni, the main character in a suit of yellow power armour, talking to his grandfather, who towers over him in red power armour. his grandfather is kneeling so he can be at eye level with him.
the caption underneath reads "where he kneels down and talks to Juni" /end ID 1]
[ID 2: a photo of the same shot but without the effects. Grandpa is shown to be in a wheelchair, and is being held at the needed height by a moveable platform his wheelchair is sitting on. Juni is wearing the armour, grandpa is not, and there are green screens behind them.
the caption underneath reads "but we just had him lowered in a dolly" /end ID 2]
#disability#physical disability#disability representation#disability in media#spy kids 3#wheelchair user#wheelchair#representation matters#disability in movies#vfx#image descriptions#also ambulatory wheelchair users exsist so the point these people try to make about them not being able to do some scenes still doesn't work

☁️.
(otherwise known as hate names terrible at decision)
VERY pastel n rainbow overload >:)
they level 3 autistic (“requiring very substantial support”) with high support needs—meaning they cannot independently do most adaptive functioning skills, needing other people physical help to do/do for them. they also need 24/7 supervision & physical help for all iADLs & bADLs.
they nonverbal & use AAC full time. their AAC is symbol based speech generating device.
their (most likely [<haven’t decided] partner who act as their) disability caretaker is hyacinthos shinya🪻🌌.
they also full time non-ambulatory wheelchair user with very specific posture & seating positioning needs so not out of it for long or really much at all.
angel wing on back of wheelchair is power assist! is magically powered by hyacinthos (who angel) & can be powered even remotely / far away. way control wheelchair & power assist part by intuitive / hand motions & gestures / etc, part by halo hover above armrest that act as joystick. can use it like traditional joystick or wear as bracelet n control that way! (gimme it i want one) (if you recognize this setting it may be because previous version)
they do mix of self propel, power assist, & caregiver push. their wheelchair have stroller style push handle instead traditional push handle for easier caregiver push, especially one handed.

[character sheet. functionally described below]
top left is full character clothing (with wheelchair translucent in background) because in original there some key parts blocked by wheelchair especially arm rest.
skirt around waist have purple band with blue small ruffles. center have rainbow bow with rainbow star on top.
n also have front n back of AAC device. what drawn here is 5x7 grid with various colored squares showing different parts of speech but grid size more so because like. is how much could fit comfortably. so even when redraw n isn’t exact 5x7 with colors exactly right where is right now, is okay. colors & where they are based on own AAC device >:) because of course
design of aac device case basically same as above. back side just have bigger clouds. oh also device has handles. tho it float around so handles get used less. float around so don’t have worry about how to carry it how to mount on wheelchair etc etc etc it follows you it automatic come to your hand when you wanna say something (kinda also acting as prompting bc sometimes think about say something but don’t actually say in device) it get out way when you don’t want it. if only like this irl lol
bottom left is info about character already said
bottom right is wheelchair design
parts covered up by person: rainbow gradient side guard, blue contoured cushion.
n also drawing of back of backrest: when not in use, wings power assist shrink to small decoration on back. not big there all time.
also have stickers! sticker of nessie, banana slug, sheep, cloud, star, rainbow, & an AAC symbol of “AAC”
wheelchair may also have magical tilt & recline & elevate. how? don’t know!!! why not just make full powerchair? uhhhh like manual chair look better
n picture of irl windmill candy
border of art also rainbow gradient lace.
yea that all please draw them 🥲
praise me put lots work into them
pls be nice to them

Best Friends For Life (Roblox - Pressure)
Art by Baybearsz. They have one of the cutest Imaginary Friend interpretations I’ve seen.
Guardsman: “So, you’ve finally arrived-HEY HEY! What’s Z-432 doing with you?!”
Damn it, the guardsmen spotted the remote on your person.
You: “She’s coming with me. I’m not leaving her down there.”
Guardsman: “She?! What were you thinking bringing an entity with you from the facility?! That was not part of your instructions!”
Imaginary Friend twiddled her tendril hands, looking ashamed as she hid behind you.
You: “So what? She isn’t a threat to anyone! I can attest to that, she’s just been following me throughout the whole facility! Not once did she try to attack me, she actually helped me! If it wasn’t for her, I’d probably be dead!”
Guardsman: “We can’t take any chances. Hand over the remote! That’s the only way Z-432-1 is able to follow you back up here.”
You: “No, I got you your crystal. Just let us do the exchange and everything will be good. I won’t leave her.”
Imaginary Friend looked worried for you, she didn’t want you to get hurt because of her….
Guardsman: “Let go of the remote. Now!”
You don’t budge, Imaginary Friend was now panicked as the guardsman raised his weapon.
She was about to try something, anything, to move you out of harm’s way when…
???: “Take the crystal. Let them go.”
You looked past the guard to see a decrepit, old man on a tank treaded wheelchair. The guardsmen looked back at the man in shock.
Guardsman: “What? But sir, you can’t be serious about this!”
???: “The public will only see it as a toy remote. Only they can see…her. Besides, only we hold the knowledge of what Z-432 can do after the cover up. Let them go…”
The guardsman sighed in defeat and takes the crystal container from you, other guards came by to escort you to the locker room for a change of clothes.
You felt a surge of warmth around your body, your friend was hugging you. She was so relieved that you were okay…
You: “You’ve been by me from the start. No way I’m letting that make us part ways. You’re sticking by me, friend….”
Imaginary Friend could do nothing but smile at you, her cheeks growing a pinkish tint as her tendril hand gently held yours.
Imaginary Friend: “….I love you…”

your pinned post mentions a "hoist"-- what does that mean? /genq
Good question!
I’m unable to transfer myself (move between my wheelchair and bed), and a hoist allows me to be lifted safely so I can do this.
This is what my ceiling hoist looks like when not in use. The box part will stay at the ceiling height and travels along the track. The bar that hangs down moves up and down with a remote control.
ID : a photo of a ceiling track hoist, which is a white box on a track at the ceiling that has a bar hanging from it /end ID
It works by having the person being moved sit on a sling that hooks onto the hoist which then lifts the person. There are lots of different kinds of sling depending on a person’s needs. Here’s an old photo of me in one of my slings:
ID: Echo in a sling which is being lifted by a hoist enough to support their body. /end ID
There are also mobile hoists which don’t require mounting anything to the ceiling. These act a bit like a small crane. They’re more mobile than a ceiling hoist which can only be used when a track is mounted but not easy to transport. I have one for when I go away and the box often gets mistaken for an electric piano or wardrobe.
I believe in other parts of the world they might be called Hoyer lifts/ patient lifts, but in the UK we say hoists
