Ryan Guzman's gotten so much better at talking about all this. I mean, compared to 2020? He's really had an intellectual glow-up.
On being Mexican...
"The reason I’ve spoken more and more about being Mexican is the fact that I’m white-passing, so a lot of people assume that I’m more white than not... So now let me make it a staple... Let me make a direct connection that no, I’m Mexican. I want the world to know: don’t be speaking ill about mi gente in my vicinity, or else, you’re going to get some feedback.”
On Catholic guilt...
“I have my own relationship with Catholic guilt. I was an altar boy and I went to the seminary for a couple of weeks and realized, you know, not for me. And I think, it’s so ingrained in the culture that it’s synonymous now to us, which is kind of crazy to me now that I’ve gone back into my own heritage and understood that was never where we came from. ”
Read the whole thing. It's a good interview.

Red Bull Culture Clash NYC 2024
On Saturday, June 1, 2024, the latest edition of Red Bull Culture Clash took place in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Four crews competed in four rounds to win over the crowd, with each team representing an annual NYC parade. There were decibel readings for each team after every round and the team with the most points would be crowned the winner.
The four crews were Remezcla (Puerto Rican Day parade), Papi Juice (Pride Parade), Eastern Standard Times (Lunar New Year), and No Long Talk (West Indian Parade). I was assigned to document NLT’s stage, which I was super excited about since my father was from Jamaica and I went to many West Indian Parades growing up. The final round had the crews bringing out special guests and it was pretty tough to beat No Long Talk’s surprise guests: YG Marley and Wyclef Jean. NLT also brilliantly handed out noisemakers to their supporters to help them be the loudest.
There’s a few images on my website here, plus a recap on the Red Bull website here, and a few more images on their Instagram accounts here and here.

Seeing as you are my favorite logical fandom person - any updated thoughts on the Buddie ban as it seems to be true. 2 articles from 2 shippers that previously shoehorned it in, are suddenly not mentioning it or "the elephant in the room."
[Thank you for the kind words, nonnie. 🤗] Curious, isn't it? (And observant of you!) Remezcla was another Eddie Diaz-centric interview, so a question about sexuality could have worked if Buddie wasn't mentioned specifically, but...[crickets]. And honestly? This was probably the best time to ask because once the episodes start airing and we find out that Eddie's search for guidance is tied to Shannon and Chris and the struggle to get his life in order, it's not very appropriate to be like "...But there's still a chance, right?" USWeekly is the more surprising of the two, IMO. Just a quick little update where Ryan could have easily teased some Buddie scene in the first couple episodes and instead it's more mustache talk and confirmation that Eddie will fall in line at first because that's what he knows. 🤭 I don't know how much Buddie friendship talk they'll be in these interviews - you know these journalists are gonna jump on whatever scenes have Eddie feeling left out, lmao - but what I *do* know is that the odds of Buddie as a canon couple being discussed are less than zero as long as Buck has a boyfriend!

Ryan Guzman: It's about vulnerability and stereotypes. It's about men being emotional without being called weak. It's about being comfortable with being who you are. It's about healing and self-love. It's not about sexuality. And concerning Buck: It's about a bisexual man coming out to his straight male best friend and being comfortable around him.
Buddie stans: A male cheerleader? Gay! Eddie talking to the father? Gay! Eddie showing emotions and being vulnerable? Gay Eddie is coming!
You're doing (and seeing) exactly the opposite of what your fave would want you to do (see). Lmao. You actively help to spread the stereotype that if men are vulnerable and emotional, they must be gay. You're a parody!
Like ... Maybe listen to what he says?! "Most of my life, I was made fun of if I ever became too vulnerable or too emotional or anything like that- from a lot of women that I was going out with, in relationships with, you know, it would emasculate you for that kind of vulnerability as well. And I didn't have brothers to bounce that off of or bounce certain ideas off of. I was always trying to do my own version of just being a lone wolf and doing as best as I could. That's kind of what Eddie was doing, until he found the 118 and so, there's, again, so many different connections to Eddie that myself has and I think every actor pulls from their own experience to give the character that authenticity. But Eddie has been eerily close to me, and living in Eddie's skin for the last seven years, I've seen things that I've done on screen play out in real life."
But, Eddie still has a journey to come in Season 8, an emotional one. “Eddie is a very complex character,” Guzman told us, “because he grew up with this machismo where we don’t really talk about our feelings.” Not just that, “We make fun of our feelings and that’s how we carry on.”
But now, “at the 118, everybody’s open and talking about their feelings and he’s been like, whoa, wait a second. This is new territory for me.” And sometimes, it’s hard for Eddie to adjust to that. “So there’s a lot of him trying to re-navigate himself and try a new direction, but with an old version of himself, which doesn’t always end the best.”
Guzman, however, promised that Eddie is trying. This is a journey. An ongoing one. Eddie has “so much healing to do before he even thinks about being the whole version of himself. He’s going to have to kind of rework his idealizations of the past and start to implement what he’s learned in the present.”
#this is ridiculous#it's actually surreal to watch this happen#live#911onabc#like Ryan could be talking with the walls#and I am not even a fan#but this is fucking sad#and just shows that he somehow attracted too many young people who have no idea of growth

how people could see last night’s episode and still continue to not see how queer coded Eddie’s character is is beyond me at this point like that conversation alone that Eddie had with the dad of him not accepting of his son for being a cheerleader like it’s literally a direct parallel to Eddie’s story and how growing up he’s grown up under the the culture of being raised Catholic and even attending Catholic schools and how again he was raised in a Mexican household with a Mexican dad and raised with the culture of machismo and how that inherently is how a lot of Mexican guys are raised that they aren’t allowed to show their emotions if not they are seen as weak and not being a “true man” and how you just grow to dismiss your feelings and not actually acknowledge them. So again with that in mind just think about how Eddie starts thinking about his childhood and the way he was raised growing up and he realizes he denied a certain part of himself because he would be viewed as “weak” to his dad and other men in his family
#911 spoilers#that’s all I have been thinking about since last night like damn this coming out story is gonna hurt#also the representation alone in the media of having a latino character on a tv show come out and have it parallel to religion like!!!#gay eddie is so so so close I can feel it#more of steph’s random thoughts#911 abc#911 on abc#911 season 8#911 s8#eddie diaz#edmundo diaz#ryan guzman

So, like at first he thought about maybe becoming a Priest but then he didn't?
But I love this interview. Really hope they don't mess this up. 🤞
