Innovative MRI technique 'lights up' pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is challenging to detect early because the pancreas is deep in the abdomen, making tumors difficult to identify until it's often too late for treatment. Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel have developed a new MRI technique that could make these tumors more visible by tracking how cells metabolize glucose.

This method builds on Otto Warburg's discovery that cancer cells consume a large amount of glucose and convert it to lactate.

The new technique uses glucose tagged with deuterium, a stable isotope of hydrogen, which is injected into the bloodstream. This allows MRI scans to detect the deuterium-labeled lactate produced by cancer cells, which conventional MRI cannot do due to the overwhelming signal from water in tissues.

The researchers found that this deuterium MRI method could detect even small tumors in rodent models of aggressive pancreatic cancer, offering more sensitivity than traditional MRI and PET scans. The approach could potentially allow for earlier detection and better monitoring of pancreatic cancer, though further clinical studies are needed to confirm its efficacy in humans. The study was led by Prof. Lucio Frydman and Dr. Elton T. Montrazi, along with collaborators at the Weizmann Institute.

so now he only allows follows from people he knows and trusts which means literally just the kiridai team, imayoshi, maybe a couple classmates, and his mum 

and then within that circle, he has the other kiridai boys on his close friends list and they’re the ones who see the stories that ‘reveal his true nature’ 

like hanamiya sees that someone who played against him has made a post about their journey going through shoulder rehab (no guessing who gave them their shoulder issues), so he reposts that post to his close friends story with the caption “time for a round two?”

meanwhile the posts his mum sees are just pictures of the kiridai cat or pages from some books he’s been reading recently

(n.b. hanamiya’s mum very rarely uses instagram. she only uses the account to keep up with family members, and only made it in the first place because hanamiya had just made his and she wanted to make sure he didn’t get cyberbullied. 

meanwhile her son is the one who has been repeatedly suspended from instagram for bullying.)

Hara Kazuya

has a lot of accounts and if not for the fact that he has basketball and other hobbies he would be chronically online

so there’s one main account which has just a couple photos that make him look cool (a photo of him dunking, or him drumming with good lighting) and occasionally he’ll post a picture on his stories of the city under a dawn sky and a note of the time so everyone knows he’s out grinding streetball at stupid o’clock. 

the main account is his only public account and he only really has it so that, if anyone (family friends, basketball players from other schools) search him up, those curated posts are all they’ll see. he only posts that occasional story in order to see if anyone’s been stalking him.

then there’s the finsta which is what he’s most active on. he posts several times a week on this account and the posts are all either 1) shitposts and memes that make little to no sense, 2) pictures of fellow kiridai members at very bad angles, or 3) photos from matches that he wants to mock, like a picture of kiyoshi’s face in agony as his knee got broken with the caption “tfw tanaka-sensei sets a pop quiz.”

and finally hara has his assortment of troll accounts, most of which he uses to pretend to be a high school girl living in the general Tokyo area so that he can catfish classmates when he’s bored. 

hara has so many of these accounts that he’s created a cinematic universe of his own with elaborate storylines about the tumultuous friendships between these non-existent girls. they’ve become kiridai’s answer to d&d whenever the boys are bored.

plus these catfish accounts have now become strategic. several of the ‘girls’ are in talking stages, and even online relationships with, basketball players from other schools. this means that a) hara can get intel from the players and b) as soon as any important match comes around, he breaks up with/ghosts the guy, in the hope that it’ll make them place worse.

it goes without saying that it was hanamiya who invented this innovative technique of psychological warfare but hara’s the one who puts the hours in - to the point where it would be a little suspicious how well he can pretend to be a teen girl in love if not for the shit-eating grin on his face whenever he goes through his collection of screenshots of messages begging “her” to take them back

Furuhashi Kojiro 

has two Instagram accounts

account number one is the one his teammates/family/friends follow. it’s a private account that he doesn’t use very much apart from liking friends’ posts. he has a few photos on there, but mostly photos of scenery from holidays

account number two is public, with around 10k followers. it’s completely anonymous and no one irl knows he has it. this account posts quite regularly and every post is an aesthetic picture either of his plants or what he’s baked recently. and when i say aesthetic, i mean aesthetic: the perfect warm lighting and usually some berries or something framing the centrepiece of the photo. 

the captions are usually quite short and wholesome: “making melonpan can be difficult but i find the challenge refreshing” “when the days become stressful, i turn to these larch bonsai to remind myself to stand tall” “i am trying a new macaroon recipe. may it bring great riches.”

he’s also started posting some reels on this account, mostly timelapses of bread rising or plants growing etc

furu uses very few hashtags but somehow still gets super high engagement. his followers adore him and have collectively assumed he’s a fem lesbian living in the countryside somewhere with her beloved girlfriend. (furuhashi naturally never corrects anyone because he wants to keep it anonymous.) the comments are all “cottagecore queen” “i owe all my mental health to you” “the only unproblematic account on Instagram”

has had the same instagram account since he was 10 and he never deletes or archives any posts so if you scroll far down enough, you’ll find videos of pre-pubescent him and hara doing ‘parkour’ (literally just jumping over benches and off swings) or those chain posts like “share this with five friends or you’ll be haunted forever.)

my muse maintains his marital status with kimberly, and they're definitely a power couple. dallas is very good at marketing, very person-forward, front-facing. he truly cares about people and wants to help them and, for all he presents himself as being in the same camp as conmen, he'll screw himself to avoid screwing someone else - unless he knows they're privileged enough to survive, regardless. kim also cares about people and is especially protective of other women, but she's much more business and finance oriented than her husband. whereas dallas is hands on in harm reduction, kim takes a more broad approach with a focus on sustaining resources. dallas is the guy who'll sit with someone through withdrawal and kim is the gal who'll go full throttle on their insurance company for rehab coverage - but they'd both work together to shell out time, resources, and money for the people they're trying to help. if dallas didn't maintain a good relationship with his wife, she'd never let him near the diamond dolls, and if he didn't maintain good relationships with the dolls... i think kim would keelhaul him using his own boat. most of his self-promoting material featuring the dolls is meant to increase their visibility, too, not reduce them to props.

no okay. if the diamond studd is dallas's statement piece, vinnie vegas is the oversized wolfmutt dallas carries around as a purse dog. he loves this guy. when he first encounters diesel, dallas reads him as directionless. lost, repressed, but smart - quickly becoming a well known and trusted name in leather communities while trying, desperately, to hide the fact that he's trans and pre-medical transition. deeply passionate about indigenous issues and cultures, but woefully disconnected from his own. money-minded, but a big spender, yet never a debter. he has so much potential and so many crudely composed fake IDs, dallas decides he's going to help before diesel even realises he could use a hand. dallas and kim are the orchestrators behind diesel safely undergoing HRT and various gender-affirming surgeries, some of which they funded out of the country. dallas continuously helps him manage his basketball injury, which does disable him and would severely limit his mobility if not for extensive rehabbing and treatments. but dallas also forces diesel out of his comfort zone, making him a more confident performer, teaching him to play characters and develop gimmicks. vinnie vegas is only the initial developmental stage of the project that is diesel, and page works tirelessly on him.

this does mean their relationship is more one-sided initially, but diesel learns how to give back. he wants to, and returning favours in equal value isn't something that comes naturally to mister cool. diesel moving on from the diamond exchange and, quite literally, taking a name for himself and making it mean something is a massive source of both pride and grief for dallas. i think a small part of him wishes diesel stayed with him longer, and yet another part laments that razor and diesel will follow each other wherever they go, with or without him. he'll always be there when he's needed without hesitation, and he'll always be home base... but he does regret not being along for the ride, sometimes. that being said, dallas is one of the first of very few people diesel will go to for help, especially in an emergency

• scotty "the body" flamingo

page thinks of scotty as a raccoon more than a flamingo. he's always getting into Something, he has perpetual grabby hands, and he may look very pretty or cute but he can rip your face off without warning. he's a diva, a brat, and a sly manipulator; scotty masterminds endless scams, cons, and elaborative lies, and dallas facilitates the operation... within reason. he knows scotty can be something spectacular if he doesn't burn himself out before he makes it. icarus, but a flamingo-pink raccoon. he can tell scotty is incredibly talented, creative, intelligent, and curious, and he can tell he's severely self destructive. he knows he has untreated psychiatric issues, but he can't pinpoint exactly what the problems are beyond the manifestations of symptoms themselves, and scotty's misogyny and general attitude towards women mean kimberly isn't willing to cooperate with him at all. dallas's checklist of things he must provide in scotty's habitat reads something like this:

1. safe, controlled, supportive environments for scotty to explore and express himself

2. healthy stimulation, including encouraging and reinforcing replacing harmful behaviours with healthier and/or less harmful behaviours

3. safe socialisation where a) scotty will not be emotionally or sexually mistreated nor exploited, b) scotty cannot abuse nor mistreat others, c) scotty will have a higher likelihood of forming positive associations with mundane activities, and d) scotty can safely express dangerous and violent behaviours and thoughts, including his fixations on the "occult."

mister flamingo poses a special challenge for dallas, and he really does try to balance protecting everyone from scotty with protecting scotty from himself. his tenure under dallas's wing is the shortest out of the notable members of the diamond exchange, but scotty never forgets everything dallas did for him and the lessons he taught him. granted, he only listens to the ones that benefit his in-ring career, and he never reaches out to dallas for help even in life-threatening situations... but he doesn't forget. their relationship is always strained, yet mutually respectful, and scotty is always going to be closer with vegas and the studd. this is a whole other meta rant, but johnny polo and raven retain the memories of dallas's kindness (raven moreso than polo), and raven, at least, does eventually accept small doses of aid from dallas in the future. they never form a bond akin to dallas and scotty's, and raven is extremely avoidant of any opportunity for page to bring scotty up.

there's some men And some ladies for u. i love dallas and really want to write him more but he's so nuanced, such a smooth talker, so slick. half the time i feel like i'm building his muse atop the foundation of my L4D nick muse and throwing in elements of other muses, but not actually creating my own little ddp doll to play with from scratch... >_>

Natasha stepped gingerly out of the shower and into the steaming air of the bathroom. The hot water took the edge off, but her muscles and joints still ached after an intense physio session. As the steam cleared, she held up her trembling arm – between the torn muscles and exhausting physio session, she couldn’t quite stop her hand from shaking – and examined her latest scar in the mirror. An ugly line, burnt red fading into dusky pink, ran diagonally across the back of her forearm, around the bone that protruded from the side of her wrist, and ended just below her palm. Five or ten years ago, she could have kicked that blade out of her opponent’s hand before he touched her. But she had been winded from the chase and the combat, slowed down by the ache in her knee that never healed quite right, and that was when the knife connected with her skin, sinew and tissue.

“Good.” Tony extended his arm, and Natasha placed her hand in his, letting his hold still the tremor in her hand. Tony traced the scar with his thumb, his brown eyes pensive as he regarded the mark that her latest close call had left on her skin, a reminder of how close she had come to losing her hand, of how close he had come to losing her.

The rough patches of his skin rubbed against Natasha’s, an oddly satisfying sensory feeling. His hands were calloused, not from a life of violence like her’s, but from invention, innovation, creation. That was why she’d always thought, even before she fell in love with him, that no matter what, Tony Stark had to live. Because he had too much to give to the world. Because he had already given so much to the world. Whereas she had nothing to give but the blood in her veins, and her gift for taking life.

Part of her had always known that she would die first. She was the one with nothing but her wits and strength on the battlefield. She was the one who slipped through enemy lines. She was the one who, if she died, the world would not miss or mourn. She was replaceable, that had been one of her first lessons in the Red Room, written in her marrow, so deep that it was impossible to completely unlearn.

Part of her still believed that she would die first, and the world would be a better place for it. But the other part – a part that grew louder with each injury, each close brush with death – the part where she dreamed that life could be something more than what the Red Room told her – that part wanted to live.

“You know, I’ve been thinking…”

Tony’s eyes snapped up to her face. “Oh?”

Not quite able to bring herself to meet Tony’s gaze, Natasha focused on their joined hands, on the pale half-moons of Tony’s fingernails as he smoothed his fingertips across her skin, tracing, over and over, where the blade spilled her blood. “I’m not sure I want to keep doing this anymore.”

It was the first time she had said the words out loud, and they sounded like a confession of weakness.

As Khailan was originally from a royal family, despite the severe amnesia they suffered post-ressurection, others who have came across Khailan comment that there was quiet dignity about them. It was as if Khailan’s body remembers being a royal but not their mind and consciousness.

Khailan is moderately silent listener rather than someone who initiates a conversation. They will be your listening ear if you need them to be. You would catch them dissociating or getting lost in their thoughts often, where they would be quick to apologise with a sheepish smile and a light shake of their head. 

Despite the weird looks people would give them (prior to the start of the game), Khailan still treats everyone with the same respect and kindness as they would to any other, but they are still capable of sharp anger if provoked. Before they learned to control their magic during rehab, there were instances where Asra would find certain Vesuvians partially frozen in ice, with fright stricken on their pale faces, calling for help.

You have said before that CBS Elementary is one of your archenemies. I'm really curious as to why.

It calls itself a modern-day Sherlock Holmes adaptation. Except that Holmes lives in New York. And Watson is a woman. And Holmes has gone through drug rehab. And Watson is his sober companion. By this point, just make up your own detective. Call it Holmes-inspired, if you must--make it something like House, where the references are there but don't get in the way of the original story. But don't try to call it Sherlock Holmes.

That alone was enough to draw my ire, but I get extra salty at it because it's always brought up in comparison to Sherlock. Like, "This is the good modern Holmes adaptation, unlike that piece of garbage." I didn't like a lot of what Sherlock did, especially in the later seasons. It skewed the characterization in a lot of ways. I haven't watched it in years and don't plan to rewatch it. But it felt like it was made by fans who had a different fannish interpretation, rather than just slapping Holmes' name on a generic CBS procedural. Sherlock had a lot of innovation and genuine love for the stories, and I think the backlash that has formed against it is massively overblown. Fair or not, Elementary being brought up as part of that backlash gives it extra archenemy points.

What all can be said about Liam Teixeira? He wasn’t the popular kid in high school by any means. At least not for his personality he wasn’t. The only time anyone really paid him much attention was when he set the head cheerleaders uniform on fire on a dare. She deserved it anyways. Especially after slapping him for trying to get her best friend to steal a car with him. His drug dealing tendencies were another story. He didn’t start out that way. On the contrary. Liam’s home life was decent. He was born to two very wealthy parents who... acknowledged he existed, but loved traveling the world for work even more. Leaving him most of the time with his grandparents. Which on its own should not have been a reason for Liam to spiral down the path that he had.

Unfortunately like most men in his family, Liam was cursed with the same luck of falling for people who had a knack for damaging them. He met Natalia Walsh on his first day of school freshman year and fell instantly in love with her. Didn’t have to do much chasing. She fell for him just as quickly. As per usual things started out innocent. Girl likes boy. Boy likes girl. Girl also likes drugs. Liam learned quickly that Nat had been raised by an entire family of addicts and despite her assurance watched as the girl he loved just as quickly fell victim to the powers of addiction. Fortunately for Nat, Liam was far from the good boy his parents and grandparents had expected him to be. Had, had his own introduction to pot and cocaine when he’d been out to visit his cousins in Portland. Envied his cousins life for his ability to get to live such an adventurous life style so freely without having to hide it from anyone.

As time went on he and Nat grew and developed new loves for trying different things together. Everything was all good until coming home from a stint in rehab and having been informed by his grandparents that they’d gotten a call from her parents. They had come home and found her dead on arrival thanks to an unknown cocktail she’d taken without telling him. The family claimed to have no idea where she’d gotten it when they reached out to his grandparents to warn them. This earned Liam a one way ticket back to rehab.

Lot of good that did him right? Wrong! Because how are you ever supposed to recover from knowing you could have done something but didn’t? By drowning yourself further. When he’d returned home from rehab he was immediately transferred to a boarding school for the rich and the preppy. People he didn’t fit in with and certainly didn’t get along with. But he’d found solace in rising to the top as the number one drug dealer that school had ever seen. They didn’t have to like him. Not when they needed him. And he used this to propel him through his remaining high school years. Sure things weren’t perfect. They were never going to be for a kid who got his kicks getting high and making a menace of his peers. Unfortunately when it came time for college applications, after all the money his grandparents had spent having to send him to boarding school, it meant he had no choice but to apply for a scholarship if he wanted any hope of getting into the school they had also hand picked for him. Once again his own destiny not feeling like his own as he found himself accepted and once again being shipped off to yet another prestigious school for him not to fit into.

Wanted Connections/Plots:

Drag Me Through Hell (0/1): The toxic best friend. This is someone who Liam feeds off of. The one who not only supports his drug use but may instigate it as needed. These two would be chaos incarnate. Likely sexual tension, because what’s wrong with a little chaotic hook up when you’re high?

Perfectly Wrong (0/1): The opposite of Liam. The pure as snow innocent who Liam hates to disappoint but will likely do so over and over again. This is the person who’s room he might spend time in when nursing those hangovers both drug related and emotional.

Ex to See (0/1): Simple enough, they only hook up when their ex is around to make them jealous.

Rescue Me (0/1): When two undecided souls met with their advisor, they were paired up in almost every single class to help each other find a path. Little did their advisor know, they were pairing too individuals that only had plans ditching class all together to fuck around and get high.

Hey Brother (0/5): A group of friends who act like family. They take care of each other, have each others backs. Probably also dick around and order chicken wanton tacos from Applebees a little too often.

Tell me I’m a Wreck (0/1): This individual likely went to the same high school that Liam went to and doesn’t feel like he should have received his scholarship. Doesn’t agree that he deserved it and think it’s being wasted on him.

Okay but the self-destructive self-loathing he has in one of the last scenes.  His fortieth birthday is coming up and he’s not looking forward to it.  He hates himself, he’s depressed, he’s resigned to the fact that he’s stuck doing the same songs over and over again with no innovation or change and his ex who he’s not even remotely over thinks he should go to rehab and he’s like ‘sounds great in theory but I’m not ready to get clean.  Also how the shit am I meant to pay for it because no matter how much I work everyone needs something from me financially including you’ and he’s kind of done living.   He doesn’t know he’s going to die in two years but he’s given up living and is shuffling through a shitty existence like Sisyphus pushing a boulder up a hill and resigned to his fate.

I'm going to be posting more on my OC Åsa Lundström along the timeline of the Hephaestus, so starting with before!!

Åsa was born June 20th, 1969, in Stockholm Sweden. Being raised by a Flight Dymanics officer, former Pilot Irene Blomqvist, and Astrophysicist John Lundström, they grew up in a breeding ground for success and innovation with their family having high expectations for all their kids. They are the eldest child having two younger siblings who they grew up relatively close with, caring for them dearly. In their teen years, they went through periods of 'rebellion' being deep into the punk scene before eventually starting to get a secondary education, being the only sibling with a career involving the studies of their parents.

Lundström goes on to gain a PHD. in aerospace engineering and biological science, going on to stay in Kiruna, Sweden, working at the Esrange Space Center. They eventually gain prowess in Astrophysic Calculations on solar radiation studies and assistance in engineering, one of the most compact and effective engines for airborn vessles of their time. This. At catches the attention of Goddard Futuristics, who aproches them in late 2012 About the Hephestus mission. With the offer of being the head engineer of a mission orbiting the red Dwarf star Wolf359, they knew of its intreege for strange radiational properties but were not enthused and declined. In Goddard's normal fashion, they don't take no for an answer and mention their sister, who had been in and out of rehab for the last two years for substance abuse. With the promise they could help her get back on her feet and provide a stable life for her, which they themself where unable to do, they accept the job for the Hephaestus mission.

They then go on to prepare for their time in space. Next post will be about them meeting the crew of the Hephaestus for the first time!

You speak of your distaste for the {character name} family and their varied businesses, making the wealthy wealthier and the poor poorer. The young man says nothing and, once the storm has subsided, leaves your home. The following day, you go to the town center to gather food and materials but are stopped when a large carriage comes clattering down the road. The townspeople part to make way for it, and whispers pick up as people gossip about the carriage's inhabitants. Suddenly, the carriage door opens right in front of you, and you stumble back and fall to the dirt ground to avoid being hit. Grumbling, you see a hand extend in front of your face, offering assistance. When you look up, you spot the familiar features of the young man you welcomed into your home last night as hushed voices rise to declare, "{character name}."

You're a teacher who loves her job and her students. However, when your contract isn't renewed due to budget cuts in your district, you find yourself at a loss. Luckily, a friend of yours knows of someone looking to hire a tutor with just your qualifications. You go to the interview and realize the job is to tutor and mentor the son of a renowned tech billionaire. The son has had behavioral problems in school and was threatened with expulsion, so the single father decided to hire a trained professional to assist in his son's issues. The more time you spend with the small family, the more you realize that the son's behavioral problems stem from his poor relationship with his father. The billionaire is smart, innovative, clever, handsome, and stubborn. He initially disagrees with your analysis, but then eventually gives way to your advice. The longer you spend in the role of caregiver to both father and son, the more you start to feel like this is where you belong.

After a car accident nearly took your life, you wake up from a coma. In the six months since the accident, everything has changed. Your best friend, who was behind the wheel when you crashed, is dead. All of your other friends have graduated and gone off to college without you. Meanwhile, your mom is busy working three jobs to pay your medical bills. You sit in your room in the rehab facility feeling a deep loneliness and depression that you never could have expected. One day you meet a new patient on the ward: a handsome man who shattered his leg and thinks his life is over, too. The two of you work through the healing process together, growing closer each day.
