Yes, I’m getting lazy now and posting these project breakdowns the same way I do to my Instagram 😅 If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

This is my first time knitting with Red Heart Super Saver, and I can see why people don't like it: the skin on my right hand is getting irritated where the yarn passes over it. But only on my right hand: my left hand is fine. I may try tensioning the yarn in my right hand the way I tension it with my left so that it doesn't rub as hard.

A Finished Objects and Two Works In Progress
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the top left: I'm working on a pair of picot edge gauntlets using Michaels Loops and Threads Luxe and Shiny worsted weight yarn in Red, and they're knit flat using size U.S. 6 (4 mm) 14" straight needles. The pattern is from knit 1 magazine, now out of publication. They were also featured on the knit 101 book, published by Sixth and Spring books in 2006. It's under the Lion Brand umbrella.
Top right: The Mulberry knit ear warmer by Crazy Hands, published in April 2021. The pattern is available on https://crazyhands.net/mulberry-knit-earwarmer-pattern/. I'm using Knit Picks Brava Bulky yarn in Rouge. Brava Bulky is a bulky weight yarn and is available through https://www.knitpicks.com. I'm using size U.S. 10 (6 mm) 14" straight needles.
On the bottom: The seeded fingerless mitts, by Cindy Chapmann in 2008. It's available as a free Ravlery download. I used size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm double pointed needles to get 5 stitches to the inch. I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Paddy Green.

The (almost done) Blanket!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This took me about 8 months of on and off crocheting. It was all done in single crochet and took 52 rounds to finish with some left over.
I used roughly 3 cakes of bernat blanket yarn in eggplant ombré . My tension was a bit tight as I didn’t want to have big holes in this project. Used a 6.5 mm hook and up to 7-8 stitch markers for increases ect.
I’m currently using a 3.75 mm for a shell stitch border! The yarn is a Caron one pounder I got for Christmas a while ago much like most of the yarns here.
The excess that could make another round was used as a coaster! Used a 4.25 for the border and it’s red heart super saver wild flower!
Anyways, hope you have a wonderful day!

Having yarn options is excellent, and realizing that not everyone loves the same yarn.
Yes, yes it is.
This is my workhorse yarn. My cat project yarn. My 'I need a bunch of colors and this is going to a) be a wall hanging, b) going to a college student c) people are putting their feet on this or d) it is for a cat.
I don't mind the roughness, this might get peed on, and durability and easy laundry trump comfort. It's not for baby sweaters, it's for fur baby sweaters.
America's Leading Brand: 120 Colours Red Heart Super Saver Yarn
Red Heart Super Saver is America’s leading brand of value-based acrylic yarn on the marketplace. It’s been around a very long time and is a staple yarn, meaning a regular yarn many people have in their yarn collections at home. There are over 120 colours of this yarn, though your retailer may carry a handful of the most popular yarns. Online retailers usually have many more options to show you…

Omg you guys Rossy has Spinrite mill ends!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to get lots of them, but I ended up going with the Bernat Handicrafter in Creamsicle because it was only $6.95 for a POUND.
Tumblr media
That's less than 2¢/gram. This stuff normally sells for almost 5¢/gram. Even with my employee discount I couldn't get this yarn this cheap.
I didn't look at the other stuff in the mill ends bins that carefully, but there was definitely some Red Heart Comfort if that's your jam.
In their regularly priced yarn they had some very rustic (read: scratchy) handspun style wool from Briggs & Little, which I can't use but I think a lot of people would like. Lots of squish.
Tumblr media
And I got a skein of Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in True Blue even though the price wasn't great ($15.99 for 283g), just because I have been wanting it for literally years and no other stores in Montreal seem to carry it.

Another bag!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made a second bag using the same pattern as I posted in the last post ( it’ll be located below after the next set or so of words!)
The only thing I did different was crocheted looser and occasionally stretched out the bag as I was working it in the hopes that I can reduce any sort of pockets of yarn airgap.
I also crocheted it from the inside out, so to speak by inverting the bag and scales into each other, so it be easier for me to align the stitches together. it worked mostly well! I still had a bit of pockets tho.
I guess it came out. Pretty damn good and is definitely much larger as a result of the looser stitching and stretching. That said, next bag I use this pattern for definitely gonna have separate skins because I’m starting to get a little bit irritated that when I’m using the same yarn that potentially I just might be fucking up just by having to use the same skeins.
Also, these might not be subtly related to pride month because my sibling pointed out that the first one had similar colors to the lesbian flag! Hence why the second one has a pretty bisexual color palette! This one was also red heart super saver! Polo stripes it’s called!

Yarn for Christmas?
An open PSA to anyone with crafting friends (and isn't really sure what they like):
DON'T BUY THEM YARN
Part of the hobby is the purchasing yarn, which some might argue buying yarn and using yarn are two different hobbies. "But OP," you might argue, "I just know they'll love the Red Heart Super Saver I got on sale at Joann's! One skein should be plenty, and they can make me a sweater!"
This is one of those rare cases where a gift card to their favorite yarn store is more personal. First off, nothing against Red Heart, but if they're a yarn snob, it's going to collect dust. If they're a project-oriented purchaser, it's going to collect dust. If they like to buy yarn, then it's just mean.
Also, NEVER imply that your crafting friend should make something for you. If they love you, they will. If they don't, then you're not close enough to be making expensive demands.
