Miami Grand Prix “Holy shit, those fuckers are fast.”
Lando barely looked up from where he lay on the bed with his head hanging off the end. He wasn’t interested in what you were doing, he was in a world of his own and wallowing with a bag of rainbow Twizzlers. Charles’ mood wasn’t much better after his 7th place finish, thanks to another famous Ferrari strategy, but he did turn away from his phone for a second to see what you were looking at on your laptop.
You were busy reading the data from the race and watching the replay, trying to find any room for improvement, but it wasn’t looking promising. Your pencil could attest to that as it began falling to pieces from where you chewed on the end of it and you weren’t going to be able to make many more notes with it.
Pausing the video, you grabbed your phone and called Max. “What the hell kind of rocket did Newey build?”
“Hello Max, how are you? I’m great, thanks for asking,” Max huffed, making you roll your eyes.
“I drove perfectly today, and I couldn’t get within 25 seconds of you. I just don’t understand it. Can you send me your data?”
You clenched your teeth at the scoff he made. “You know I can’t do that. And don’t even try the whole ‘but I’m your sister’.”
“But I am your sister, and it’s so humiliating to go from racing for first place to just racing for the bottom step of the podium.” Your hand tightened around your phone and your eyes burned even after screwing them closed. “Please, Max.”
“I can’t,” he said quietly. “But…if you visit P on Wednesday while I’m at the factory the sim might be left in the race set up.”
Charles jumped at the squeal you gave. “Thank you, thank you. You’re my favourite brother again.”
You hung up the phone after a quick goodbye but your smile disappeared at the shake of Lando’s head. “What?”
“Humiliated with third place,” he muttered as he looked to Charles for back up. “Is she serious?”
“I think so, but you know what Max is like when he doesn't win.”
“He throws a tantrum, I’m not throwing a tantrum - I just want to know how to do better. I need to show Red Bull that it should be me in that seat.”
“Okay, and then what? What happens if they offer it to you? You know how toxic that place was, you know how bad it was for your health - how can you want that again?” Lando took your phone and dropped it on the bedside drawer as he knelt beside you. “Answer me.”
“I don’t want the seat,” you corrected him, kneeling so you were eye to eye. “I just want to prove the point.”
“What point is that? Everyone already knows you are the best driver, you’re the World Champion.”
You felt your hands turn to fists at your side as they began to tremble and you were unable to control the outburst that followed. “That it wasn’t the fucking car, Lando! You think I don’t hear them all talking behind my back, saying anyone could have won if they had my car.”
“Woah, let’s just cool down,” Charles interjected with a hand on each of your shoulders.
“No, Char, I am going out of my mind here. I have had to sit through interviews and read news articles getting absolutely slated by reporters telling me I’m nothing without the Red Bull seat.” You fell back on the pillows and bundled one to your chest as you turned away from your boyfriends. “I know third place is something to celebrate, but this is about more than winning.”
Charles’ hand came to rest on your hip and he gave it a gentle squeeze. “Come on, mamor, let’s go get you some chocolate.”
“I’m not on my period,” you grunted as you shook his hand off you. “Are you trying to be condescending or is this just coming naturally?”
“I was trying to be nice, but you want to act like a spoiled child. Lando, coming?”
You felt them both climb off the bed and felt their absence like a punch to the gut. You clenched the pillow tighter to your chest as silence filled the hotel suite but it didn’t replace them.
“Fuck,” you swore as you threw the pillow across the room, launching them all one after another as waves of emotions crashed over you. They didn’t like losing either so surely they could understand why you felt the way you did - but obviously they did not. Exhausted from the race, and argument, you collapsed in the middle of the bed and bundled yourself into the blankets, wrapping them tightly around you. Within seconds you were fast asleep, but it wasn’t a restful sleep - not when you were alone.
You felt even more exhausted when you woke to the pre-dawn light filtering through the gap in the curtains. Soft snores sounded beside you and you found Lando and Charles cuddled for warmth since you were still wrapped tighter than a burrito in the blankets. The fact they had returned to you and not one of the other beds in the suite eased something strange in your chest and you knew you had to make it up to them. You didn’t know what came over you, but you had been a bitch to Charles especially.
You carefully laid the blankets over them and closed the door behind you.
The streets were busy for the early hour and as the sun broke the horizon you wandered aimlessly until a scent caught your attention. You followed the saliva-inducing smell until you reached a large square with a market setting up in the centre of it. Key Lime pies and Cuban sandwiches made your stomach grumble while the fresh fish and stone crabs had the opposite effect.
Shopping bags dug into your wrist as you tried to carry them and balance the extra large pie, but you managed to make it back to the hotel suite without dropping either. Charles was in front of the coffee machine that was warming up with a whirring noise but he moved the instant he saw you walk in.
“Where have you been, chrie?” he asked as he took the Key Lime pie and placed it on the table before helping take the bags of fresh fruit and hot sandwiches too. “I was worried when you weren’t answering your phone.”
“Sorry, I had my hands full.”
“What is all this?”
You looked at your feet as you shrugged. “This is my ‘I’m sorry for what I said when I was hungry’ apology. I was a bitch and if you want you can totally pie my face.”
“It’s been a long few weeks, you can be forgiven for snapping,” he said softly as he pulled you into his arms, and wiped a dollop of meringue across your cheek. You gasped at the sticky smear running down your cheek and Charles smirked before dipping his head down and licking the sweet topping off. “Now go wake up Lando before there’s no pie left.”
Monaco Grand Prix The cancellation of Imola’s race made for a nice, albeit unexpected, break and you had made the most of it after helping with the clean up. Yuki started it and convinced Pierre to help, who convinced Charles, who convinced Lando. You would have rather slept the rainy week away but it had been quite a heartwarming event in the end - until the silt and mud mess began to reek and you were happy it was time to leave.
“On a scale of one to ten, how much did you stick to your training schedule over the break?” Kristian asked as he keyed data into his iPad.
“Negative three, if I had to guess,” you said with a laugh. “I mean, you shovel dirt for 12 hours a day and survive on a salad. I had carbs, dude, but I would have burned it off too, so relax.”
“But you haven’t and that was two weeks ago,” he frowned, turning the iPad around to show the graph slowly climbing. “What have you been doing since?”
“I went skiing with Charles in Austria and cycled the Pyrenees with Lando so lay off my ass. Fucks sake, man.”
It was almost time for qualifying to begin but you weren’t able to focus properly as you stormed your way down the line of motorhomes to McLaren. You could hear his music playing before you reached his room and it spilled out into the hall when you opened the door.
“Hey baby,” he greeted with a smile that dimmed as he saw your mood and he turned the music down, “what’s wrong?”
“Kristian, with a K, pissed me off.” You dropped onto his couch and stretched out before lifting your feet up so Lando could sit down too. He slipped your racing boots off before laying your feet across his lap and pushed the legs of your race suit up your calves so he could give you a little massage. “He practically called me a lazy bitch.”
“I doubt that,” Lando said with a roll of his eyes. “If he actually did, we wouldn't be here talking about it, we’d be getting ice for Charles fist.”
“Okay, wise guy, I might have been paraphrasing…”
He chuckled at the admission and you yawned as the massage began to relax you enough to doze off.
“Sorry, love, it’s time to go,” Lando woke you with a kiss to your cheek and you found you had curled up into a ball while you slept. “We can have a proper nap after quali.”
You ignored Kristian’s presence as you entered the garage and shrugged your race suit up over your shoulders on the walk over to your race engineer. “How’s everything looking?”
“We are running with the setup from FP3 but we will still monitor the rear braking temperatures,” Chris said as he gathered his notebook to take to the pit wall. “It doesn’t look like there should be an issue again.”
You nodded before pulling on your balaclava then helmet and climbing into the car that had been warming up.
“And that will be P2, that is another front row start for tomorrow. Nicely done.”
You grinned inside your helmet as you waved to some of the fans while you finished your cool down lap and asked, “How did Charles and Lando do?”
“Leclerc is P3 and Norris is P10.”
“10? He was doing faster sectors than I was,” you muttered as you remembered seeing the times on the big screens around the track.
By the time you pulled into the pits you had found out that Charles had impeded Lando on his final flying lap, resulting in the poor time. You knew he wouldn’t have done it on purpose but your stomach sank when you went to Ferrari only to find Charles on his way to the stewards - his forlorn face knowing he was going to get a grid penalty at his home race.
There was hardly any talk around the table that night when you got home. Lando was picking at each single grain of rice with his chopsticks and Charles just stared at his bowl before sighing and pushing it away.
You silently rose from the table and felt their curious eyes follow you as you disappeared into the bedroom and changed into a racy set of lingerie that still had the tags on. You had bought it as a surprise but never had the chance to wear it, so what better time to test it out then when both men were clearly in need of a distraction.
You knelt in the middle of the bed after you sent a message to the group chat and waited patiently. There was a quiet vibration of their phones on the table, the scrape of the chair legs over the tile floor, the padding of bare feet through the apartment, and the soft gasps of air they inhaled at the sight.
“Fuck me,” Lando whispered before he drew his bottom lip between his teeth.
“Moi aussi.”
“That is the plan,” you teased, drawing your fingers over the lace trim on your thighs. “But only if you can play nicely with each other. Hmm? I think you should kiss and make up.”
You held out a hand to each one and gave them a tug onto the bed and into each other's path. Their quick reactions stabilised them before they could crash and they shared a chuckle as they settled face to face.
“I’m sorry, amor,” Charles murmured, reaching for the curl that always flopped over Lando’s forehead. “I didn’t mean to ruin your shot.”
“I know, I’m sorry too,” Lando said, equally as soft before he caught Charles open hand and kissed his palm. With apologies over, their eyes turned to you. “Now, baby, where have you been hiding this?”
You winked as you made yourself comfortable on the pillows at the headboard and parted your legs. Their chests filled with a big breath in and a grin grew on their faces until both their dimples showed. “You like them?”
Lando’s head bobbed with his quick nods and he fell onto his forearms as he settled between your legs, his fingers teasing the line of your slit through the crotchless panties. “I like them a lot.”
You snapped your legs closed as he started to inch forward and he looked up with a pout as you warned him. “I said kiss and make up. A proper kiss.” It hurt to deny him, your body screaming at you for denying you both the pleasure of his touch, but you were quickly rewarded when their hands tangled in each other’s hair and their tongues fought for dominance.
An achy throb grew between your legs as they were pushed open by Lando’s shoulders as he fell back beneath Charles’ body. Lando looked quite pleased with himself as he bared his neck for the sloppy kisses Charles was leaving and his eyes rolled up to watch you enjoying the scene yourself. A pained curse tumbled from his lips when you reached for the thin material covering your breasts and pulled them aside to palm them as your hips rocked beneath Lando’s heavy body.
“Okay, you two are good now,” you breathed as you rolled your nipples between your thumb and forefinger. “I want my kiss.”
Charles peeked up from where he pinned Lando beneath him, the pressure pushing Lando’s nape over your clit and eliciting a moan from you. “I don’t know, ma petite, I kind of like this show you are giving us.”
You teased them further as they shifted to get a better view. Lando turned to watch you too and Charles sat behind him, his hands trailing down Lando’s front as delicately as he played the piano. You waited until his palm rode over the erection tenting his shorts before you grew impatient.
Two pairs of eyes, one blue and one green, followed your hand intently as you raised it to your lips and swirled your tongue around two digits and they moaned, knowing the feel of your tongue doing the same to their cocks. Their eyes fixated on your fingers as you spread your legs and touched yourself for them, the pleasure quickly spreading as you watched Charles stroking Lando’s length in time to your ministrations.
“Look how wet she is for us, mon cher,” Charles purred as he teased a thumb over Lando’s sensitive tip until he shuddered. “Don’t you want a taste?”
Lando’s lips parted to agree but a needy whine escaped and the sound went straight to your core, your back arching in delight.
“Please,” you begged your boyfriends, their eyes almost black with lust. “I need more than my fingers.”
Lando whimpered as Charles fist unfurled from his cock but the loss was only momentary when the Monegasque whispered in his ear. “Go on, give her what she needs.”
“What about y-?” Lando asked over his shoulder after he sent his shorts flying off the bed and pressed his erection to your dripping entrance. The words died as he saw Charles eyes following the curve of his spine before settling on the swell of his ass. “Oh.”
Charles chuckled and sent a wink back. “I’ll get what I need.”

Red Bull Family
Synopsis: Y/n L/n joins Red Bull Racing in 2022, and after some warming up, becomes Max Verstappen’s best friend. These are seven moments over the years when the energetic young adult breaks down “Mad Max”
young female driver reader x platonic max verstappen, charles leclerc x reader if you squint
so, I saw a rumor one time about how Max might want to leave f1 after his contract ends in 2028, so I thought it’d be fun to write a story about a teammate friendship and how it feels when one person retires. for this one, reader is 19 and max is 24 when she joins red bull in 2022
(y’all this fic took over a week to write and is almost 10k words 💀 idek if it’s good or not but i am not leaving this is my drafts)
2022- “Welcome”
You didn’t know why you were this nervous. It was just a team. They were just your coworkers. He was just your teammate. Today was your first day at Red Bull Racing. In the middle of the 2021 season, Christian Horner approached you with an offer to leave Alpha Tauri and join the Red Bull Team alongside Max Verstappen for 2022. You didn’t know what to expect from your new team, much less the infamous “Mad Max”. You knew that he could be kind and funny, but you also knew he could be cold and brutally straight forward.
With as much confidence as you could gather, you walked out of your car and towards the Red Bull Headquarters. The only person you knew was the team principal and that was only because of contract meetings and phone calls. It was your only chance at a first impression, and you were determined to make a good one.
The first person you saw when you walked inside was Christian, though he was surrounded by a few other people. “Y/n! Welcome! It’s nice to finally see in here in headquarters” Christian said, offering a smile and a handshake. You offered your own hand as he introduced you to the people around you.
“This is May Dawson your ‘minder’ or personal assistant, of sorts.” A woman that looked around your age stepped forward and shook your hand.
“Pierre Wache, our technical director” A middle-aged man stepped forward. “And our director of engineering, Paul Monaghan” The last man present shook your hand.
“So, first, we’re going to introduce you to everyone in the factory, just to give you a chance to meet everyone, then, there’s a meeting with the five of us, it’s not going to take very long, it’s just to further introduce you to Red Bull, alright?” Christian puts a hand on your shoulder and leads you through the factory. You just nod and smile as you look around the factory.
Your team principle gives you a mini tour of the place while you walk to the main garage, where your co-workers wait for you. You smile as you enter the room and applauds fill the space.
You greet as many people as you can as the five of you walk down the stairs. “Okay, okay. Thank you everyone for being here to introduce our newest driver, Y/n L/n!” Everyone starts clapping again, and you notice your teammate across the room.
As Christian continues talking, you make your way towards him. “Hi, it’s nice to meet you, I’m-” He cuts you off. “Y/n L/n, I know, he just said that” Max chuckles at you.
“It’s nice to meet you too, I’m Max” He takes your outstretched hand. You take notice of Christian’s lasting speech.
“So, how long do these ‘introductions’ usually last? I mean, you know, right? I’m your third teammate in three years” You both laugh.
“Yeah, you are. Don’t worry, it’ll be over soon. But then you have your introduction meeting, that lasts at least an hour and a half, and then I think you’d have some media stuff afterwards. So, you’re not leaving for a couple hours” Both of you laugh again as your team principle’s speech finishes.
“I’ll see you soon, good luck” Max smirks at you. “Thanks, see you soon” You smile back at him as May approaches to take you to the meeting.
Your teammate turns out to be right, and you don’t end up leaving the factory until after sundown. Your first day consists of a lot of handshakes, a photo shoot in your new attire, and a thorough tour of Red Bull headquarters.
You're due back tomorrow for some more introductory stuff and a meeting with your PR team. The first race of the 2022 season isn’t until a month and a half, but there is a lot of prep work.
There were no knots in your stomachs as you thought of your upcoming weeks at Red Bull or with Max. You didn’t really know what to expect, but you were excited, nonetheless.
2023- “The Dream Team”
It’s been over two years since you’ve been recruited to Red Bull, and you couldn’t have asked for a better two seasons with the team. In both 2022 and 2023, the lowest result you’ve got was P9. You and Max have completely dominated both race seasons, with a Red Bull driver always on the podium. Christian Horner was extremely pleased with his driver’s performances and the rest of the racing world came to love watching you race.
The fandom also loved seeing you and Max together. Your first days at the factory started the friendship and partnership that so successful today. The team behind Red Bull’s YouTube channel had you film a ‘Two Truths and a Lie” video as your first appearance together and the two of you have been attached at the hip since. You’re the first person to congratulate each other after a race and are known for speaking very fondly of the other when given the opportunity.
Max sees a lot of himself in you and ever since the first time he saw you in the Red Bull car on the track, he knew you were going to be something special. You were right about him being kind; the Dutch man has acted like your mentor during your first year at Red Bull, offering advice and never faltering in his belief in your success. He made you laugh a lot too, especially when Daniel Ricciardo was by his side.
Daniel joined you two in most media duties for the team, and it usually takes forever to get anything done due to the constant talking and laughing that goes on between you three. You met the Australian later in your first week at Red Bull and in true Daniel Ricciardo fashion, he made you feel comfortable immediately and the two of you became fast friends.
Seeing as Formula 1 was nearing the end of the 2023 Season, Red Bull decides to bring back a popular class, On the Sofa with Max Verstappen, Y/n L/n, and Daniel Ricciardo. You teased it with a photo of the couch on your Instagram and the fans went crazy. It was a bit sad knowing it was the end of the season, but you were mostly excited, both to go home and to do an iconic video with Max and Daniel.
“Hello everyone, I’m Daniel Riccardo”
“I’m Max Verstappen”
“I’m Y/n L/n”
“And this is, for the first time in a while actually, On the Sofa, with Max, Daniel, and Y/n” The older man introduced you three. “If you don’t remember, it’s fine because neither do I” The three of you smiled. “We are going to be reflecting on some on-track and off-track moments from this racing season. I’ve got the questions, they might have the answers, let’s get started”
Daniel turned to you. “Y/n, you decided to copy me and win in Monaco, your first win in 2023, also. What was going through your head throughout the race, when you crossed the finish line, and during your dive into the pool?”
You smiled at the memory of your first win. “Well, a lot of the race was me trying not to get too excited and mess up. I qualified P2, right behind Max, and because there isn’t a lot of opportunities to overtake in Monaco, I was pretty comfortable finishing there, but then I overtook him towards the end of the race and spent the rest of it trying not to freak out. I was really relieved when I crossed the finish line, and the dive into the pool didn’t even feel like an option. Jumping into the pool is something iconic for all drivers who win there, how I am not going to do it?” You spoke honestly.
“I’m surprised you didn’t copy my belly flop too” Daniel said, making you laugh. He turned to your teammate. “Max, she beat you. How did that feel?”
“Oh, it felt great, you know. I love being overtaken by my teammate. It’s a great feeling really” Max replied sarcastically. “No, but actually, I mean, obviously I wasn’t happy about not winning but it was nice to see you win, I was proud, if I’m not gonna win, I’d want it to be you” He turned to you and a smile came on your face. Daniel let out a small smile before interrupting. ‘Alright enough of the sappy, ‘I love you’ bullshit” He picked up another card.
“Max, what was your favorite win this season?”
“I think the Austrian Grand Prix. With it being at the Red Bull Ring and having a lot of Dutch fans there, it made the race pretty special” That was a good day for Red Bull, a 1-2 from you and Max and a lot of support from the fans. You remembered the cheers from the arena and the celebrations that seemed endless.
“Yeah, you liked flexing on everyone else, didn’t you” Daniel joked and the three of you laughed. “Someone ask me a question now” Neither you or Max were given cards, but you were happy to improvise.
“Daniel, what was the best part of filming your show, ‘Grandstand' with Will Arnett?” You asked. “I think just getting chance to commentate and watch the race with someone. I mean, I’m usually watching the race from the garage or the pit wall, but it was fun to just talk and kinda goof around while the race went on instead of just watching” The Australian replies.
“Y/n, what was your favorite off-track moment from 2023?”
You immediately grin. “Definitely the paint video. By far, that was so much fun.” At the Belgian Grand Prix, the Red Bull media team had you, Daniel, and Max, do a painting challenge. Daniel and Max had to give you instructions to create a portrait of the three of you, while you were blindfolded. You were laughing the entire time, and it escalated to a paint fight once they insulted your finished portrait. The team was mad at you and Max for ruining your clothes and causing a delay for you three of clean up, but it was worth it.
“Oh, the paint video was so much fun”
“I still have some of that purple paint on my hat, I think” You splattered paint on one of Max’s beloved hats, claiming that he should add a purple one to his collection. The three of you laughed and Daniel picked up another card. “This one is for both of you. What is the best part of having the other as a teammate?” You looked at each other before you responded.
“Well, first off, Max is more than my teammate, I think that’s the best part of it” You chuckled before continuing. “I mean, you’re my mentor, you’re my friend, you’re my supporter. You’ve made my first year of Red Bull easier and a lot less scary than I thought it would be, and not a lot of drivers have all those things in a teammate”
You finished, not wanting to ramble on about how grateful you were for your friend and looked at Max, who was smiling at you. “Wow, Max, how are you gonna top that?”
Max chuckled at that before answering. “Y/n is all those things for me as much as I am for her. When I’m unhappy with my performance, she is there for me. Without even realizing it, you teach me things that I probably would not have learned with anyone else as my teammate” He speaks to you now.
“Aw, what a love fest. You guys should hug it out” Daniel comments. “You have to join the hug, too, Daniel” you say before moving closer to the two of them. The Australian wraps his arms around the younger drivers in a hug, swaying slightly, before completely pushing you and Max off the couch.
“No love here. Only violence and pain” You and Max laugh from your places on the ground. “That’s it for today, hope you had a fun 2023 season, don’t do drugs, and we’ll see you next year” Daniel said before walking out of frame. You and Max both waved to the camera. “Bye everyone, we’ll see you next season!”
2024- “More than you think”
It was Round 7 of the 2024 Race Season and for once, Monaco couldn’t have been uglier. It was pouring rain and the wind could be heard over the twenty car engines. You’ve driven in a lot of wet races since you joined Formula 1 in the beginning of 2021 but never in one as bad as this one.
You and Max were talking about the conditions in your driver's room and how even though you both thrived in the rain, this was too intense for comfort.
“I mean, I know the FIA is brain dead in most situations, but, jeez, you’d have to be blind to make us race” You complained to your teammate seated beside you on your couch.
“I know, and in Monaco too” Max trailed off, hoping there wouldn’t be any crashes today. Soon enough you two had to separate to prepare for the race, but not before promising to see each other off before you got into your respective cars.
An hour passes and the rain doesn’t let up. Your race engineer informs you that if anything, it’s somehow supposed to get worse. Frowning, you make your way to Max’s side of the garage to wish him luck. “Hey, be careful today, okay? Good luck” You tapped him on the shoulder and put your hand on his shoulder.
“And you the same, yeah? Good luck” He pulled you into a hug before putting on his balaclava and helmet.
Both Red Bulls start their formation laps, trying to see through the rain and avoid the other cars on track. Your heart beats faster as you approach your place of P3 on the grid and the five red lights come on.
“And it’s lights out and away we go in Monaco!” The voice of Martin Brundle becomes audible. You manage to pull away, but the tight corners of Monte Carlo don’t allow you to gain a lead. You struggle through the mist of the two cars in front of you for the first 11 laps of the race but manage as best you can, until you get to the straight after Turn 8.
You didn’t see Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari in front of you. The spray from the rain kept you from knowing that he slowed down, until your front wing hit the back of his car. The collision caused your car to turn almost 180 degrees around, making the car behind you, Fernando Alonso, ram into the side of your car. The impact made you spin off track and into the barriers for a harsh stop.
“Big collision on the straight before Turn 9! I think that’s Y/n L/n’s Red Bull! She was hit by Fernando Alonso, I think, after Charles Leclerc braked.” Martin commentates as he looks onto the track. ‘That looked very bad, might be- yep, red flag until we know if L/n’s okay. Her car has stopped but she hasn’t moved yet”
You were completely disoriented in your car, your dizzy head making it hard to comprehend what had happened. Once you realized you had crashed into the barrier, you noticed the intense pain coming from your left leg and left side of your rib cage, the side that Fernando hit.
You tried to get out of your car, but your leg made it nearly impossible, you would have to wait until the safety marshals arrived.
Max was in P1 so he didn’t see your crash in person, but he saw glimpses of it through his rearview mirror. “That was Y/n? Is she okay?” The Dutch asks his race engineer, GP. “Yeah, that was Y/n. No information on her yet. Just slow down and get back to the pitlane” The man responds. “Is she out of her car?” Max radios again. GP didn’t want to worry Max, knowing how close you two are, but he knows he has to tell Max.
“She hasn’t, Max, Y/n is still in her car, that’s all we know. Just focus on getting back to the pits safely” Max ignores GP again.
“What has she said?” Gianpiero hesitates for a moment before responding.
“Nothing, Max. There hasn’t been any communication from Y/n yet.” At that, Max mutters “Fuck it” before pulling his car over after Turn 11 and shutting off the engine.
“Max, no, come back to the-”
The driver cuts his race engineer off. “No, I’m going to see if she is okay. Don’t try to stop me”
Max was thinking back to your conversation before the race and became filled with worry. He knew he should’ve pushed Christian to get the FIA to cancel the race; he knew it was too dangerous. Now you’ve crashed and are unresponsive in your car.
Max runs through the rain to get to your car to see you struggling to get out. “Y/n! Are you okay?” He shouts loudly as he gets closer.
“Not really. My left leg got hit, and I think I hurt my ribs” You wince as you shout from your cockpit.
“I’m going to help you get out, let me know if it hurts too much” Max stands over you and grabs your hands to pull you up. You crouch on your one good leg and let him help you stand you up in your seat, one arm across your ribs. “Good?”
“Yeah, I just don’t know how I’m going to get out from here”
“Let me carry you, keep your bad leg out” Max comes to the side of your car, and you make out his outstretched arms through the wind and rain. He puts one of your arms around his neck and grabs your good leg, carrying you bridal style.
He puts you down a few feet away from your car but makes sure your arm is still around his neck so he can help you walk. “Look, the marshals are coming. I’m going to leave you with them and come see you after the race, okay?” Your teammate says as the safety car pulls over next to you and Max.
“Okay, thank you Max, you know you didn’t have to”
“I know, I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” He says honestly.
“Good luck” You called out as two medics came out of the car and wrapped your arms around their shoulders. They took you to the medical center where you were diagnosed with a fractured knee and a few fractured ribs. You spent the rest of the race in the hospital so doctors could put a cast around your leg, while May sat beside you and updated you about the ongoing event. She got there a little after you did so she could gather all your stuff from the garage, and you could go back to your hotel once you get discharged.
A knock on the door interrupts your conversation with her. “Hey” Max’s head becomes visible as the door opens. “Hey Max, congrats on P1. I’ll check you out, Y/n, I’ll come back in a few minutes” May nods and leaves you and Max alone.
“Hey Max, you did great out there” You smile at your teammate from your place on the hospital bed.
“Thanks, I was happy Charles and Carlos got to the podium with me, but I wish you could’ve been there”
“Me too, but..” You trail off, gesturing to your leg and torso.
“So, I talked to Charles and Fernando, they plan on visiting you at your hotel tomorrow, they were worried about you, especially Charles” The Dutch man tells you.
“Yeah, I figured, I’ll talk to them tomorrow” It is silent for a minute, until Max suddenly blurts out. “Are you okay? I mean, I know you aren’t okay, but, how long until you are?”
It wasn’t until now you noticed that Max’s blue eyes are filled with worry. “The doctor said it would be at least a month until I can race again, and I’m going to be in the cast for a couple weeks” Your teammate frowned.
“I’m sorry, Y/n” You shrugged. “It’s not your fault”
“I know, but I wish I could help”
“Don’t worry about it, Max. I’ll be back soon, it’s only a month”
“I know”
Who you can only guess to be May knocks on the door. “I’ll see you, later, Y/n, get better soon” He grabs your hand before leaving the room. As you ride back to your hotel, you look at social media to make a statement about your current state.
Max has surprised you about a lot of things today, and by the looks of the comments under the videos about your crash, the fans are too. You’ve never been in a serious crash to the point where you need to go to the hospital before, but you expected Max to just text you after his race and ask about it the next time you see him.
The fans are going crazy, mostly the ones that ship you two together, but generally they’re just happy you seemed okay. You would comfortably say that Max is your best friend, but still, he’s not the type to stop his own race to check on you. It may have taken you two years, but you finally realize that “Mad Max” isn’t mad at all.
2025- “By my side”
It was the beginning of the 2025 racing season, you were in your fourth year at Red Bull with Max and by this point, you knew each other better than you knew yourselves. There is no point in having separate driver’s rooms because you are always in his, your press officers have given up on trying to get the two of you to behave and just let you follow each other around the media pen, and your Red Bull co-workers are smart enough to not let you two alone in a room together, especially not after you two had found the old Crazy Carts and pulled a “Daniel” by putting a hole in the wall. Christian feels like he has two more kids, and let’s Geri take care of you however she wants. Your families are close too, always sitting together nervously in the viewing room. Kelly is basically your older sister and Penelope loves you like an aunt, so your excitement about their engagement is understandable.
Max proposed at the end of Abu Dhabi in 2024 and if Charles’ arm wasn’t around you, keeping you grounded, you would’ve been jumping up and down and screaming. You almost tackled her in the hug, the smile on both of your faces blinding. Penelope grabbed your hands and made you start dancing to the music blasting from the speakers with her, while the arene was booming with cheers. You geeked out the same way once the invitation was sent to you and let Kelly gush about the wedding all she wanted once you got your nails done together.
You and Kelly’s friendship started when complimented her jacket when you met her in the 2022 Monaco Race. She gave you the name of the place, but when you joked about not knowing French and having no idea how to get around the city, she offered to take you there herself if you were still around Monday afternoon. You went and had a really good time with the model, talking mostly about how different you two are and making fun of Max. At the next race she attended that year, you two went out for coffee Friday afternoon, and it quickly became a tradition after you went out together a couple more times.
You met Penelope soon after that and fell absolutely in love with her. You thought she was adorable and was so glad she seemed fond of you too, probably because of the candy you give her every time you meet. Your friendship continued to get stronger, leading to now, talking about your role in her wedding.
The event was not going to be small in any way, and Kelly really wanted someone she could trust to keep an eye on her daughter and keep her out of trouble when she couldn’t. Her best friends and family already had their own parts to play, and knowing how much you adored the young girl, she chose you.
The wedding was held at a beautiful venue in Monaco, and it couldn’t have gone better. You weren’t the only driver there, Daniel, Lando, and Charles were present and accompanying you. When you weren’t keeping Penelope occupied, you were with them, talking about Max and Kelly and dancing.
You smiled fondly as the couple when they stood at the altar and would be lying if your eyes were completely dry as you watched them take their first dance. The four of you took photos with the married couple, and you even have some of just you and Max and you and Kelly. Everyone had a great time; love was an amazing part of life, and you were happy to watch your best friend experience it.
Unfortunately, loss was also a part of life. And it nearly killed Max to watch you go through it.
Days before Round 10 of 2025, you got a call saying one of your closest friends, Luis, had been killed in a car crash.
Luis was a part of the friend group you had back home, and you had known him for years at that point. He was hilarious and caring, always making sure you knew he supported you no matter what. A member of the same friend group called you in tears, and it took everything in you not to break down as well.
It was Thursday, meaning you had media duties for hours. You almost left your driver's room to get May and ask her to cancel your responsibilities, but then you remembered that were supposed to meet your PR officer outside the garage in less than five minutes so she could escort you to the media pen. You talked to your friend as long as you could, promising to call back as soon as you finished, and hung up the phone to leave. You blinked back your tears as you met your officer and didn’t even bother putting on a smile as you passed your co-workers.
You met up with Max as you walked. “Hi- what’s wrong?” He immediately notices the frown on your face. “I’ll tell you after” You’d start crying if you talked about it now. You answer questions for what feels like an eternity, probably sounding like a robot, giving generic answers.
You were grateful when you were excused from a press conference and made a bee line for your driver’s room. You locked the door behind you as you grabbed your phone and called your friend back. She broke into tears as she told you the details of what happened, and you couldn’t help but join her. You sat on the floor, back against the couch as both of you cried over your friend. Sobs escaped your body faster than you could stop them and you prayed no one heard you.
You were proven wrong when you heard a knock against the door, and the voice of your teammate called out. “Y/n? Are you okay?” Max pauses, waiting for a response. “Let me in, Y/n, please”
You turned back to your phone. “I’m sorry, Max is at my door, I’ll call you back and we’ll talk” You told her this exact this thing hours ago and was frustrated you can’t spend more than a few minutes alone.
Wiping the tears off your cheeks, you unlocked the door. “Y/n, I heard you crying, what’s wrong?” Max put his hands on your shoulders. “I- I just found out my friend from home, Luis, died-” That’s all you manage before you have to cover your mouth to stop a cry from leaving.
“Oh, Y/n” Your best friend pulls you into a hug, holding your head against his shoulder. “I’m sorry” He repeats, rubbing your back. He brings you to sit down on the couch, an arm around your shoulder and a hand to wipe the tears falling from your cheeks. You sit with Max until you calm down a bit and are ready to talk.
“Luis, he was one you told me comes to the grand prix’s in your country, right?” You nod.
“My friend told me he was in a car crash this morning, on his way to work. I don’t know, Max, just, the fact that he died doing what I do for a living is just...” You trailed off, trying not to cry again.
“I’m sorry, Y/n, it’s not fair. Here, let’s go back to the hotel, you can just relax for the rest of the day”
“Yeah, yeah, we should go. Also, about tonight, can you tell everyone I’m feeling sick or something?”
You and Max were supposed to meet a few other drivers for dinner later, but that was the last thing you wanted to do. “Yeah of course. I’m going to get my stuff from my room and then we’ll leave, yeah?” He leaves and you pack up all your stuff before Max meets you in the hallway.
The trip back to your hotel was silent and Max leaves you with a hug before going to his own room. You were finally able to connect with your friends back home and talk about when you’d be able to see them next after you traveled home Sunday afternoon. You spent the rest of the day in your room, thinking and listening to music when you didn’t want to think anymore.
You didn’t feel any better the next morning, and just hoped to get through Free Practice 1 and 2 quickly. You didn’t smile as you walked through the paddock, keeping your sunglasses on and taking the quickest way to the Red Bull garage. You have headphones in as well, so everyone gets the message that you’re not up for conversation.
FP1 and FP2 go by quickly and as always, the Red Bull does well, and you come right behind Max in P2 both practices. You leave the same way you came in, walking quickly to avoid the press. Your fellow drivers are still around the paddock, and they still don’t know why you’ve been holed up in your hotel room for two days. You haven’t talked to Max much since yesterday, but when you have, you’re glad he doesn’t just look at you with pity and actually checks on you.
You talk with your friends about the funeral arrangements for Luis next week before you talk with his parents, two people that have been as supportive of you as their son has, making you cry again. You skip out on your dinner plans with May and your PR officer with apologies and promises to make it up to them and order room service.
You make yourself a little more approachable on Saturday morning but keep the sunglasses. You wave at your friends but don’t stop to talk. At this point, most of the drivers know something is seriously upsetting you. They watched your media day interviews and barely recognized the person in front of the microphone.
A few of them asked Max about you when they run into him, but your teammate doesn’t want to tell everybody something you might not be ready to share.
He is by far the most worried driver of them all. He’s your best friend and he’s never seen you like this before. Max knows how close you were to Luis; he’s used to hearing stories about the adventures you had when you went home for a few days and can only imagine how you’re feeling inside.
Nobody goes out Saturday night in preparation for tomorrow’s race and you’re glad to have more time by yourself. You take the sunglasses off and stop to talk to your friends on Sunday, the first time all race weekend.
Max walks with you through the paddock, letting you talk when you want to or be silent if you choose. You don’t visit his driver's room, but you make sure to give him a hug before you get into your respective cars, an unspoken ‘thank you’ for his support over the past few days.
The race cheers you up a bit, you go P1 and point at the sky as you stand on top of your car in front of the garages. When the cameras pan over to you, you make sure the top of your helmet is visible, where an R.I.P. Luis sticker is. You wish he could’ve been here to see you win, but you know he would’ve been proud of you.
Max brings you into a hug after he parks behind you in P3, and you’re reminded how grateful you are that he is your best friend.
2026- “We should be proud”
You and Max have accomplished a lot together throughout the past four years. Max is now a four-time world champion, winning 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025. You beat him in 2024, and you’ve just beaten him to the 2026 title. You and Max have been almost tied with points every year since you’ve joined, so it usually comes down to the last few races to decide the winner. Beating Max wasn’t at all easy, and it didn’t get any less difficult to beat the rest of the grid.
Red Bull can no longer completely dominate as they did in the early 2020’s, but they still manage to top the other nine teams. Ferrari and Mercedes are the biggest rivalries, but a few other teams cause your cars a fair bit of trouble. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at Mclaren bring stress for the three big teams, as do Lance Stroll and Mick Schumacher at Aston Martin.
The partnering of Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo has brought Alpha Tauri up to the midfield and has allowed both drivers to stand on the podium multiple times. It’s made the last few years very exciting, and even though you love winning, you love seeing your friends succeed as well.
This year had been no different; You and Max had each won a fair number of races and had each stepped onto the podium multiple times. Ferrari and Mercedes had not made it any easier than previous years but still, by the time Abu Dhabi came around, Red Bull had a lead of 30 points over the second-place team, Mercedes. You were currently first for the Driver’s Championship, but Max was close behind with only a 19-point difference. If he won tonight’s race, he would become a five-time champion, and you’d have to wait until next year.
You tried to shove that thought out of your head with headphones. Your trainer just finished helping you warm up for the race start in an hour and you’re in your driver’s room. Usually, you’d be walking to Max’s room to chill out before drivers have to get into their cars for their formation laps, but you two had long come up with the agreement not to see each other before races that would determine the championship.
When it is time to start the formation lap, you go to the garage and instead of hugging your teammate like you usually do, you settle for a handshake and a nod. He’s your best friend, but also your closest rival. You start P2, Max beating you by half a second yesterday, and anxiously wait for the five red lights to come on.
“And it’s lights out and away we go in Abu Dhabi! Verstappen has a poor start, L/n takes advantage of it and tries to move in front of him and Y/n L/n is now leading this race but Max Verstappen is not far behind, the gap is less than a second, and Verstappen takes P1 back from L/n. It has been an exciting year in Formula 1, what better way to go out than a classic Red Bull battle?” David Croft commentates for the crowd.
It’s a great racing day for Formula 1; the weather is nice, and it looks like all twenty cars are going to last the 58 laps. As you continue the race in P2, trying to defend against Charles Leclerc behind you, you try to think of strategic ways to win the race. You don’t get very far, because you remember that Max is driving the same car as you, and by now, you’re as good as the Dutch man.
Your teammate takes a somewhat early pit stop and you’re able to gain a lead, but then you have to pit and get stuck in P6 behind Lance Stroll.
“Lap 35, Y/n L/n is leading in P1, Verstappen P2, Sainz P3, and Russell P4. Interesting lineup here, but the real fight is within Red Bull. We’re over halfway through this race and L/n and Verstappen have been trading places all day. There are not many options as to who will win this race, folks, but that doesn’t make it any easier to predict”
It’s Lap 50 and the excitement has winded down. It looks like everyone behind you and Max are going to stay the way they are currently, meaning you’ll be sharing a podium with Charles. Whether you’ll be standing on P1 or P2 you still don’t know. Max has made his way in front of you but you’re restless, gaining on him every possible moment, being only a few feet away from his rear wing on the straights.
You’re starting to get nervous now. This would not be your first World Championship, you had that moment in 2024, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t mean the world to you if you became a two-time world champion.
You think it’s your nerves that help you pick up on the fact that Max’s car locked up for just a second before going into the final turn. You think it’s your nerves that make your foot push through the gas pedal and help you get in front of your teammate. It’s Lap 51 and you’re in front of your teammate. You could win this. You could win this.
These words were like a mantra in your head, all the way until Lap 58, when you actually start to believe in yourself. The Dutch man behind you is relentless, getting so terrifyingly close to overtaking you, but never quite getting fully past. “Keep him at bay, Y/n” Your race engineer comes on over the radio. “Keep him at bay and it’s yours, Y/n”
And thirty seconds later, it is yours.
“And it’s Y/n L/n! Y/n L/n is the winner of Abu Dhabi 2026! Y/n L/n is the World Champion! Ladies and gentlemen, L/n is the Champion of 2026!” Crofty shouts and suddenly the only thing you can hear in your race engineer through your ears. "You've done it! You are the World Champion! The World Champion!”
“Holy shit, oh my god, holy-” Suddenly one of your arms is waving up and down because it’s the only way to express energy in your tiny car. You’re screaming, definitely making everyone down at the pit wall’s ear’s bleed. You feel tears in your eyes and don’t care because you were close to sobbing in 2024.
“Y/n, congratulations, you are officially a 2-time World Champion. We are so proud of you down here, congratulations” Christian’s voice comes over the radio next and you feel like you're floating through your cool-down lap.
You put one of your hands on your helmet as if you were covering your face and remember to wave to the crowd. You drive your car in front of the paddock where the 1st place sign is and get out of your seat as quickly as possible. You put your arms in the air and allow yourself to hear the roars of the crowd. You get down to run to your team, but you see Max first.
You know he just lost to you, and he probably is upset but he’s your best friend. Without hesitation, you run to him, and he meets you halfway to pull you into a hug. “Are you fucking kidding me? I’m so proud of you. Oh my god, Y/n, I am so proud of you” Your teammate has to shout, even though your heads are right next to each other.
He unwraps his hands from around your waist as you both run to your team. His side of the garage has been so successful these past few years and it’s a win for Red Bull overall, so they cheer just as loud as everyone else, just glad to see you happy. You both jump up so you can be caught by the engineers and it’s just a mess of high fives and cheers.
You both finally pull off your helmets and balaclavas and turn to see each other’s grinning, flushed, faces. You hug each other again. “We should be so proud of ourselves, Y/n. I’m so happy for you” Max doesn’t lie to you, so you’re glad you don’t have to worry he feels otherwise. You both pick up your towels and water bottles before you have to give interviews for Sebastian Vettel.
He became like Nico Rosberg, coming back to the paddock, not as a driver, just as someone who likes to be involved in Formula 1 and has the right to. You were on the grid with him for two years before he retired, and even though you two have never been best friends, you like him, and he roots for you especially. “Before I ask any questions, congratulations” The German man pulls you into a hug. “Thanks Seb” You grin.
“Y/n, you’ve just accomplished something unbelievable in F1, and have ensured Red Bull go down in Formula 1 history. What’s going through your head?”
“It’s unbelievable. I mean, it was more unbelievable the first time, but doing it a second time, just feels incredible. I’m really happy to be a part of Red Bull, and I’m really happy I’m able to help them achieve bigger things” You smile as you give your answer.
“Well, we’re all happy for you, Y/n. Again, congratulations, you drove very well today” Sebastian shakes your hand and sends you off.
While Max steps forward, Charles comes to you. “Congratulations! I am so happy for you. You deserve this” The Monegasque brings you into a tight embrace. “I am so proud of you” He kisses you on the cheek before letting you go. “Thank you, Charles, congratulations to you too” Charles has finished third in the driver’s championship every year since 2024 and you’re happy he’s finally getting the car he deserves.
You go into the driver’s room where a camera and TV wait for you. “A four-time world champion and two-time world champion. We are the dream team, aren’t we?” Max grins at you as he takes a seat. “Definitely” you say as you look at the screen, watching your championship win as long as they let you.
2027- “An Outsider’s perspective”
It has been almost ten years since Drive to Survive premiered and by now, all the drivers on the grid are sick of Netflix’s bullshit. They made it seem like you either hated or were in love with half the grid, and somehow managed to make fake conversations about teammates and contracts. Almost all the drivers never went in for interviews anymore, but a certain email caught their attention.
One thing everyone had known for years; You and Max were best friends. Another thing that nobody had known until about a month ago; Max was not extending his contract with Red Bull to go past the 2028 season. The director of Drive to Survive saw this and thought about making it into a second-to-last season finale of the show. Max’s patience about his contract news had worn out quickly, and nobody has been updated about it in a week.
Everyone in the entire world has heard you and Max say that you two were just friends a million times, but that didn’t mean they weren’t curious to know if there was more going on. It was time for the rest of the grid’s opinion on it.
“So, Charles”
“Lando”
“Carlos”
“Daniel” The director asked the Red Bull drivers’ closest friends.
“What’s really going on between Max and Y/n?”
Charles lets out a small smile. Lando groans. “Seriously?” Carlos rolls his eyes. Daniel laughs.
“There is nothing going on. They are just friends” Charles is confident.
“Nothing! For god’s sake’s...” Lando’s annoyed
“I mean, I don’t think anything romantic is going on. I think they are just very good friends.” Carlos is honest.
“They’re married and they have three secret kids in Monaco” Daniel continues to laugh.
“So you don’t even think they’ve kissed before?” The director continues.
“No” Charles shrugs.
“Maybe. I’m close with both of them but I don’t think it’s any of our business”
“No one except them can know for real. I haven’t seen them kiss before, but I don’t know”
Daniel stops laughing “No but actually, they're not together. Trust me, I’ve spent a lot of time with the two of them. They’re not a couple.”
“You don’t think anything is behind those glances?”
“No”
“Like true love? No” Lando laughs.
“Well, it’s obvious that they love each other. You just said it, the meaning behind their looks, you cannot ignore. But I still don’t think they are in love”
Daniel smiles now. “There is definitely some love between them, in their looks. It’s pretty obvious, I’d say”
“Do you think, let’s say, in another life, they would’ve been together?”
Charles cannot deny this question. “Yes, I do. Not in this one, but in another life, they are definitely soulmates.”
“Yes, I do actually. In another life they are 100% in love and have been together since 2023, probably.”
“I think so, yes. In another life though, not in this lifetime” Carlos smiles.
“Oh yeah. In another life they probably are married and have three secret kids in Monaco”
“Why do you think? That they’re together in another life but not in this one?
“Because they are meant to be with different people”
“I don’t know. Some people might say Kelly, but, if they really wanted to be together, they wouldn't have let somebody else come between them. They just don’t love each other like that” Lando says.
“They are just not meant to be together, I guess” Carlos says.
“They don’t love each other like that. Obviously, they love each other in some way, but not the kind you have in a relationship”
What is one time you thought they were definitely a couple?”
“To me, it was always obvious that they were not. I know to a lot of people it is the opposite but for some reason I could just tell, they loved each other but only as friends.”
“I remember one summer break in 2024, when Daniel invited me, Max, and Y/n to spend some time in Australia at his farm with him. This was a few months after Y/n crashed in Monaco, by the way. I remember we were all on a beach together, and Y/n just kept pulling Max behind her, telling him to look at seashells and crabs and stuff like that. And he didn’t protest at all, no matter how much random beach crap Y/n handed him” Lando smiled. “I thought; ‘Max would never have the patience to let someone pull him around like that’ But he did, and I think it was because he was glad she wasn’t seriously hurt in that crash”
“I said it earlier. I don’t think I ever thought they were. Me and Y/n are very good friends and when I first asked, she told me they were not together, and I have not thought otherwise”
“There have been a few moments over the years at this point, where for some ridiculous reason, Max gets a huge wave of hate at a time and- well, Max has never been one to care what other people think of him, but some stuff really got to him, and I remember Y/n making a few posts on social media telling everyone to stop, and that the stuff they were saying to him was really disgusting and undeserved. She knew everyone would think she had some sort of feelings for Max after that- I did and they’re my best friends. But she did it anyway, multiple times. And Y/n thinks it’s really annoying when people say they’re a couple, so for her to do that... I thought they were 100% in love”
“Last question. What do you think makes Y/n and Max, Y/n and Max? What about them makes them so different than other driver friendships?”
“I think their similarities, I think that’s what started their friendship in the first place. Max has said he sees a lot of himself in Y/n and she joined Formula 1 and Red Bull when she was young, they both did. So, I think it’s that, their similar achievements and such, that helped them become such good friends” Charles answers.
“Their personalities, I’d say. They have similar senses of humor and- they're very different actually. They say opposites attract and I think that’s true for them. Max is a bit introverted, and Y/n is not at all. People think Max is too serious and if I had to add to that, I think Y/n makes him loosen up a bit” Lando states.
“I’d say their loyalty to each other. You know how when you were in school, and the teacher would say, ‘everyone chose a partner’ and you and your friend immediately look at each other? That’s Y/n and Max. They each have a lot of friends but at the end of the day, they’re only looking at each other” Carlos says
“Everything about them together just clicks. If you watch them interact, you can understand how comfortable they are around each other. If Y/n is buying food, she gets extra for Max. If you can’t find Y/n around the paddock, you start looking for Max because he knows better than you do. There’s no hesitation when they touch, whether it’s a hug or just a hand on the shoulder. It’s a combination of how long they’ve known each other and how well they know each other.” Daniel explains.
“Okay, cut!”
2028- “The End of Something Great”
You’ve known for longer than anyone else has. Not because he told you. Because you know him. You don’t know how to explain it, only that you’ve known for almost a year at this point that Max’s contract was ending and he was not going to renew it or look for another team. You think it’s something you’ve always known, since you first saw that Max’s contract was set to end at the end of 2028.
What you don’t know is how you feel about it. You’re happy for Max because he is leaving on his own terms, and as world champion. But you feel like crying once you realize you won’t see him as often anymore. You’ll be best friends always, you know that, but it won’t be the same. Not the same as when you’re driving right next to him, or as when you’re training together, or as when you’re eating breakfast together at hotels.
You’re driving to Red Bull Headquarters for the last time for the 2028 season when you’re thinking about this. You have to turn the radio on to stop yourself from tearing up. Red Bull’s media team is having you two do a ‘On the Sofa: Goodbye Max’ video before he leaves F1 forever and you’ve been dreading it. You’ve enjoyed every second of driving alongside Max Verstappen and you’d do it for another six years if you could.
You take a deep breath as you walk in with May and towards the showroom, where the sofa and your teammate await. The cameras are already rolling and you’re not even in frame yet. You know the people behind the camera want every moment of your goodbye.
You let out a small smile once your eyes meet. “Hi” You move to hug him. “Hi” He whispers back. “You ready?” “No” Another sad smile.
“Hello everyone. I’m Max Verstappen...”
“I’m Y/n L/n”
“And this is On the Sofa with Max and Y/n, for the last time” A laugh escapes your mouth and you put your head in your hands.
“I thought you were sad?”
“I am. I just laugh when I probably shouldn’t”
“Y/n” He gets right to it, knowing neither of you are in the mood to joke around before starting. Reading off the card in his hands, “What are three things you will miss most about me as a teammate?” You don’t even bother trying to be funny or careless.
“Um, filming videos for the channel, testing days were always fun because they let us talk to each other while we’re in our cars, and traveling together, I think” Max laughs. “Oh, testing days were never productive, I mean, at least not for us” You laugh along with him, thinking of the fond memories that have accumulated over the years.
“What has been your favorite video we’ve filmed over the years?”
“We’ve done so many I can’t pick just one, so I’ll say…I think the videos where we’re competing against each other. Like that one baseball game we did in Texas one year, and all those races we did on track, like the roller skates and the scooter one, those were fun because we always just ended up laughing”
“The ones where we’re against each other are definitely very fun” You’re both grinning now.
“What are two things that have changed, and two things that have stayed the same over the past six years- wow, six years. It’s been six years?”
“Oh my god we’re so old- you’re 31 and I’m 25. Jeez”
“Old? Six more years and you’ll be 31 too”
“Yeah and you’ll be 37” You snicker.
“Answer the question” Max rolls his eyes fondly.
“Fine. Two things that haven’t changed are the fact that you’re still wearing that fucking hat, and the fact that Red Bull has billions of dollars and refuses to by a more comfortable couch!”
“Yeah this couch sucks”
“Two things that have changed... Well, we’re both old-“
“Stop calling me old”
“and we’re both World Champions” You smile at the camera.
“Okay, Y/n, if you could choose your teammate for next year, who would you choose and why?”
You stop laughing. “I would choose you because I don’t want you to go” Another sad smile. The mood in the room changes. Max pulls you closer and into a hug. “I know” He says to you.
When you pull away, you try to hide the tears shining in your eyes and you’re surprised to see Max turning his head away too. “Y/n” He grabs another card to distract you two. “If you could relive one moment from the past six years, what moment would you choose?”
“I’d relive all of it if I could. I don’t regret a single second and I’d do it all again like that” You snap your fingers, and you don’t hide your face when the tears spring up again. The video is almost over and you both feel it.
“Y/n, if you had one wish right now, what would it be?” Everyone in the room knows the answer to this question and you don’t know why the marketing team chose today to come up with these questions. “I’d wish for you to stay” At that, a tear drips down your cheek and Max brings you into his arms. You freely let water drip down your face and are surprised when you feel a drop or two of water fall on to your shirt. You’ve never seen Max cry , you don’t think anyone has, but for this moment he lets his emotions overpower his pride and shed a few tears.
“Oh god I haven’t cried in a while” You let out a weak laugh when you pull away. “Me either” And then you're both looking somberly at each other, feeling too much to say.
“The last thing we’re going to do is helmet swap” He breaks the silence as you both pull your written-on helmets out from behind the couch. You decided to give Max the helmet you were wearing when you won your second World Championship. Max hands you the helmet he was wearing a few weeks ago, the one he was wearing when he won his fifth and final World Championship. You smile before reading the paragraph written on the side.
“Y/n, when I met you at the factory all those years ago, I did not expect you to become the person you are to me today. You are my best friend, my supporter, and my confidant, and I don’t know where I’d be without you. We’ve made so much history together, and I hope you go on to make some more. Never stop driving, I wish you the best. Your teammate, Max Verstappen”
You hug Max before he can see your shining eyes. “Thank you for everything” He whispers. You both stand up once you pull away but wrap your arms around each other’s shoulders once you do. “I’m saying all my proper goodbyes to everyone later, but I’ll give the gist of it now” The Dutch man looks at the camera. “Red Bull, thank you for everything you’ve done for me. It’s been an incredible past few years. And I don’t say it much but thank you to all my fans. I’m so grateful I’ve been able to race in F1 for so long, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The End. Goodbye!” Max waves to the camera and you join. Everyone behind the camera cheers. You and Max hug for the last time as teammates and you wish time would stop right there. “The end” He says. “The End”

A 10 day timeline of statements by Christian Horner and Helmut Marko in the lead up to keeping Perez
- July 19, Hungarian GP FP | Horner: "I think he's been in a bit of a headspin the last the last few races, but hopefully today were the signs that he's coming out of that - and the team are working very hard with him to support him and make sure that he does re-find his form, because we desperately need it." [source: Sky Sport F1]
- July 19, Hungarian GP FP2 | Helmut is asked to confirm if Perez has performances clauses in his contract that can be triggered by summer break: "There are various forms of performance clauses and, ultimately, it doesn't matter what a contract looks like, you just have to perform.” + “We'll have a look at the two races and then we'll sit down together to decide what and how things will continue after the summer break."
Helmut is asked who the favourite is among Ricciardo, Tsunoda and Lawson to replace Perez, he replies: "That was a nice question. I'll give a nice answer: everything is open." [source: ORF]
- July 20, Hungarian GP post-quali | Horner: "I think I have shown that I am very patient, but this was really the last thing he and the team needed. We now have to get everything back together, repair the car and see what we can get out of it during the race.”
Asked about Perez’s future, Horner replies: "Any discussions we have with him will of course take place internally and not in front of the media. But of course we can't run on one leg." [Racingnews365]
- July 24, commenting about Hungarian GP | Helmut: “It was a typical grand prix weekend for Perez: unpredictable. He continues to have this up and down, nobody knows when he will shine or when he will make a mistake, he simply lacks consistently good performance.” [source: Speedweek]
- July 26, Belgian GP Free Practice | Horner: "Checo’s future is in his hands. He has to have a good weekend, because we need his points for the constructors’ championship and McLaren has recovered a lot in the last races." [source: FormulaPassion Italia]
- July 27, Belgian GP pre-quali | Helmut: “Sergio knows that for the constructors' championship we have to have both cars ahead of McLaren if possible, and that hasn't been the case in the last few races”
When asked to set a specific goal for Perez, Marko refuses: “No, the goal is to win both the drivers' and constructors' championships, and we'll discuss the best way to achieve that on Monday [the 29th].” [source: Motorsport.com]
- July 27, Belgian GP post-quali | Helmut: “But it’s great to see Sergio, who has really improved. He will start on the front row due to the relegation and now things are looking much better again.” [source: Motorsport.com]
- July 28, Belgian GP post-race | Helmut: "Sergio had the opportunity to achieve a good result from second place. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Especially in the last stint, he completely collapsed, driving 1:48 times. What looked so positive in qualifying unfortunately didn't come true in the race." [source: Sky Germany]
- July 29, Red Bull Racing factory, Milton Keynes | Horner: "Checo remains a Red Bull Racing driver, despite all the speculation of late. We look forward to seeing him perform on circuits where he has done well before”
#Sorry I made this mostly for me but im posting it for posterity :)))#and this doesnt even include peripheral statements. just the main stuff issued by Horner and Helmut regarding Sergio#no YOU are not crazy; the team is genuinely behaving like a social experiment#the line about Horner not wanting speculation… my brother in Christ YOU STARTED IT#I JUST WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENED IN THAT MEETING :))))

f1 news, rumours and interesting facts from the last few days

Aston Martin got approval for a new research and development facility in Silverstone
Either Andrea Stella is joking or smoking crack because he thinks in equal cars, the three best drivers on the grid would be Max, Lando and Fernando
Jannik Sinner scored a partnership with f1 to attend some races and promote the sport (and then visited Maranello)
Kubica is confirmed for ferrari's third hypercar and Shwartzman said he is interested in the seat as well - but he also tested indycar with Ganassi
Sainz says new ferrari 2024 car (or protect rather than a car at this point) behaves differently in the sim to the 2023 one
Aramco signed 5 year extension with am and they will be named aston martin aramco f1 team
Alfa Romeo is now Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber..... (and alpha tauri added the "RB" to their name which could be racing bulls but also red bull)
Merc is finally leaving the no side pod design to allow more event distribution and less drag
Charles won the overtake of the year with his move on Perez in Las Vegas!!!!
Fia changed rules about misconduct (and officially changed maximum fine to 1m euros, prohobited the use of flares on grandstands and shortened the right to review from 14 days to 96 hours aka 4 days)
Rbr did a pit stop in dark for some kind of dick measuring contest and got 2.84s which is just faster of ferrari's normal pit stops (if we have all 4 tyres ready)
Button to hypercar with Jota in 2024
Alpine finished the shares selling to us investors (the reynolds guy thingy)
Max went on about how absurd his fee is despite his team saying they will pay for him so... um 🤐
Fia hired more staff for in factory check ups to visit every 2/3 weeks but they wanna start visits with little to no notice where they call the factory and immediately visit in 10/15 mins
Rbr will start making a new wind tunnel in Milton Keynes that should be finished in (or was it by?) 2026
Ferrari confirmed the previously rumoured date of 2024 car presentation for 13th feb (Fred also said the car will be 95% different which supports Carlos saying the car concept is very different in sim and Fred saying they completely skipped two upgrades this year to focus more on 2024, among other stuff Fred also said both drivers will start on equal terms during the new season start)
Audi is rumoured to be keeping tabs on Lawson besides Ocon and Hulkenberg
there is a new ferrari challenge with matt gallagher from shell (someone remind me to watch it along the math challenge when I have time, also shout out to shell because I love the mini playing car from them i got) and the secret santa was posted (it is kinda boring this year ngl)
Also! The head fortuneteller Mika Hakkinen said yesterday that he thinks mclaren will take another step ahead in performance for 2024 and challenge red bull closer that merc or ferrari, but he also said that ferrari are finally on a correct path and Fred is the one team principal under which they will win a championship again "sooner or later"
While I knew f1 drivers are prohobited from doing dangerous stuff (unless you are Charles Leclerc and can make puppy eyes, then you can run half a marathon, wall climb, ice wall climb, scuba dive, ride and water scooter and what not), but I did not know red bull (and probably other drivers) have it specified in their contract they can't even drive a motorbike - which some of them wanted to do at Honda thanks day seeing Marc Marquez on his bike
Ben Sulayem is playing some weird game i do not like taking a dig at jean todt for leaving the fia operating with a loss (completely disregarding that's counting the covid years where motorsports events often couldn't even take place and lawsuit fees for the use of halo) and saying how under him the non profit organisation will get balanced sheet by 2025 (also said how fia must focus on safety and reputation which... hmm)
There are some rumours about the fia and its integrity and governing abilities (I just learned about how they fucked up wtcc and then wtcr after making the championship with close fights and easy rules where more teams could get in too exclusive opening chance for Citroën only to get ready for new rules so they dominated everything and adding huge spoilers which created dirty air and kept overtaking close to zero. Sounds scarily similar to f1 these days?)

Em, do u happen to have a snippet/deleted scene for us today? 🥺🥺
Hi hi hi!! I do not have any from if i had words! Still working on writing everything I want to get down so that I can start cutting stuff later. I do however have this very long snippet from a fic i will probably never finish wherein Max announces his retirement and Charles goes through the 5 stages of grief.
“So,” Charles says on the phone that night, “when are you back in Monaco?”
“In a few more days,” Max answers, distracted. He has an airpod in one ear, the ancient pair of Beats that Daniel gave him while they were still teammates perched on the top of his head just close enough to the other ear that he can hear the sounds of the engine revs from the sim. It’s a completely convoluted setup, but it at least allows him to talk to Charles as he drives. “How’s Maranello?”
“About the same as always,” Charles replies. He sounds happy, and Max wonders distantly if he means it in a good way or a bad one. His tone sounds almost fond, and Max nearly bins it into a wall as he focuses on the sound of each syllable. “I went to visit the academy drivers, and they are staying in the same house I used to live in. It is strange to go back. Nothing really has changed.”
“Yeah?” Max asks him. “Are they any good?”
He hums. “Maybe in a few years,” he answers.
Not yet, then. Not good enough to replace Charles, should he decide to switch teams next year. Max wonders at that; wonders if that’s what was on Charles’ mind during his visit. Surely it’s early to be thinking about such things. Maybe it’s right on schedule. He doesn’t know.
“The food has not gotten better,” Charles continues. Through the line, water starts running. It sounds like he’s doing dishes. “A new restaurant has opened, but it's very controversial because it is not the regional cuisine. The team are very angry. We are not supposed to go, but the only other restaurant near the factory is a Michelin star…bar thing. I do not know how to call it. It is like a pub, but very fancy and with no beer.”
Max grunts. He doesn’t either.
“I cannot eat foam and cheese crisps all day,” Charles continues, giggling. “Andrea hates it. He says it is all air. I cannot build muscle eating this.”
“The food in Milton Keynes isn’t better. You would be eating Pizza Express up here,” Max replies, perhaps a bit cruelly. This isn’t the time to bring up Charles’ flirting with a Red Bull contract—not flippantly.
Charles doesn’t seem to notice. “Mate, we should get dinner when you are back,” he says instead. “When do you come in? I am back on Thursday.”
“Thursday for me too,” Max answers.
“Alright, let’s go. I will call that place on your street so they save us a table.”
The place on Max’s street happens to be the only restaurant in Monaco that serves anything remotely resembling Dutch food. It’s where Max always ends up after a bad week, and Max thought they were highly discreet until he’d brought Charles in and watched the owner practically fawn over him in what Max assumed was Monegasque while Charles flushed pink all the way down to the collar of his shirt. He’s fairly certain for that reason that the owners have absolutely no idea who Max is, which he loves. He’s also fairly certain he’ll never have to make a reservation as long as Charles is with him, not that he points that out.
“Sounds perfect,” he says. “Text me the details.”
“Alright, will do,” Charles replies. The water flicks off. “Are you sure you’re alright? You sound a little…”
“What?”
“Different. I don’t know.”
“I’m fine, Charles. I’m on the sim.”
“Ah, I see,” Charles teases. “You don’t even have time for a full conversation anymore, you’re so busy. The life of a champion.”
“You’ll know all about it soon enough,” Max answers. “I’ll see you.”
“Alright. Ciao.”
It’s only after he’s hung up that he registers what he implied; the way it could be construed. He hadn’t meant Charles would be a champion soon with Red Bull. Would Charles take it to mean that? Does he know what Max knows?
Max had meant Ferrari, of course.
Charles probably knows. After all, he can now apparently tell how Max is feeling just based on his voice. Max isn’t sure he has anything left to hide from him.

Lewis Hamilton after finishing P2 in Spain | 04.06.23
Together, the second and third. Firstly, George did a fantastic job to come from 12th to 3rd. Great points from the team. I hope everyone back at the factory, that's way back home, feels proud of themselves for the work they have done and the step that we've taken this weekend. And last weekend.
The car felt great. We definitely, of course, have steps to continue taking to try and close the gap to the Red Bulls but this is way more than I expected this weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed the race. If you are quick here you should be quick elsewhere. But I think the way these cars work there is a narrow working window. So I think there will be tracks where it's not so great maybe, but I am hoping that is not the case. And I'm hoping it's strong like this weekend. Mega points for the team. I think we've gone second in the constructors championship. I think we have the strongest team. Particularly George and I punching out great results weekend in, weekend out. We just need to pick up the performance a little more - which everyone is working hard to do - and then hopefully at some stage we can catch those Red Bull's

James Interview about strategy
This is from some german magazine, translated into English by deepL, and the original text has been lost because I'm stupid. dates is roughly after the 2018 season.
The work of a strategist sounds like a dream job. After all, you only have to work for 90 minutes every two minutes every two weeks.
That's correct (grins). Most of the time, the work is already done after the first stint. So it's not even 90 minutes. And seriously, what does work look like in the factory between races? First of all, it must be stated that strategy is not an individual's job. There's a whole team behind it. Of course, I'm in the forefront and am held responsible for the success and, of course, the failure at the same time. But I can count myself lucky to have a team of very talented colleagues behind me.
How big is your department exactly?
We are five people who deal with the topic of strategy. But we don't always all work on a race weekend at the same time. With 21 races, you have to divide up the tasks somewhat. Normally there are two of us at the race track, while the others stay at the factory and support us from the so-called Race Support Room. 18 years ago, I was all alone. And you honestly have to say that back then a lot of mistakes happened. We make fewer mistakes these days, but each little mistake is much more in focus. There are many more things that we need to consider in our work. It's not just about the amount of data that has increased dramatically. You just have to make a lot more decisions. And of course the competition has also evolved. I wouldn't be surprised if Ferrari and Red Bull look a lot like ours.
During our last visit in the Race Support Room there were more than five people were present.
The five people mentioned, including me, are only responsible for strategy. But they are not the only ones in the Race Support Room. A Formula 1 car produces data all the time. Some only look after this data, others are responsible for the tyres or the aerodynamics. Another group pays attention to what our opponents are doing and then relays this information to us at the track. Not all of this information helps you. Some of it is only there to help us better understand the behaviour of our opponents. Other information is urgently needed to make important decisions that influence the course of the race.
When so many people are feeding you information, your head must explode. How do you filter out what is really important for your decision at that particular moment?
We have a fixed protocol for distributing information. A lot of it doesn't go directly to me, but to other members of the strategy team who know how the race is developing. They then filter out what could be important for me. I have access to 18 different radio channels at the command post. Depending on the importance, some of them are regulated louder, others quieter. The human brain is polarised in such a way that attention is automatically heightened by certain signal words. So you don't have to understand everything in all the noise. For example, if someone says signal words like "James", "Box" or "Red Flag", then I can hear that out of all the jumble of sounds, even if it comes over a channel that has been turned down. Hearing can be trained and gets used to picking out what is important. If you're not used to that, you probably wouldn't understand anything in the confusion. We have been working together on the pit wall for 18 years. This has created a unique relationship of trust. For example, I don't question what Andrew Shovlin thinks, and it's the same the other way round. That reduces the complexity of communication considerably.
What exactly does the preparation for the race weekend look like? Do you already have a race strategy in mind when you go to the track for the first time?
The process starts much earlier. 14 weeks before a race, we have already thought a lot about what could happen if it is particularly hot or cold. Or how the tyres behaved the previous year. Together with the experiences of the previous races, you then try to make predictions about what will happen in different conditions. With that, you have to make your tyre choice for the race weekend. A few weeks of work already go into these preparations. Then you can let the work rest for a while. Only two weeks before a Grand Prix do you open the folder again and adjust the data with the latest findings. For example, they analyse how the tyres have behaved on the asphalt locations that are comparable to the upcoming race. The million simulation processes also take into account how the competition has developed in the meantime. One examines where one's own strengths and weaknesses lie. Then a special programme is created for the race weekend to get the maximum performance out of the car and the tyres. This objective can change from time to time. Brazil was the first race after winning the World Championship titles. That's when you think about whether you can gather information on Friday that will help us for next year. On a Thursday, when the weather forecast is also very specific, the drivers already have a clear picture of what we expect from the conditions and tyre wear on the long runs on Friday.
Apart from special weather conditions, how often do you have to change the original plan?
That is more often the case. However, they are not always major adjustments. Sometimes you just change something trivial like the lap of the first pit stop or the tire choice for the second stint. But sometimes it's also major. Bere things. For example, it can happen that you actually plan to start the race on medium tires in qualifying, but then the soft tire suddenly works much better than expected. That calls for almost radical changes. You then have to postpone a medium run to the third practice session and base qualifying entirely on the soft tire. For the drivers, that can be very disruptive when you change the planned program like that. In the environment in which we work here, something like that can cost us victories.
How many scenarios do you discuss with the drivers in the strategy meeting before the race?
We always hear about Plan A, Plan B or Plan C from Ferrari. We prefer to point out factors to our drivers that they need to consider at certain key moments of the race. We're usually pretty close to reality with our predictions about the race. But there are always things you can't plan for, such as a safety car or temperature changes. The drivers then have to react correctly. Ferrari usually gives its drivers four plans. We prefer to tell the drivers how much they have to watch out for the tires when they lead the race, or what happens if they have a bad start. As a result, they don't immediately panic if they lose places early on.
We'd like to know specifically, using a few races as examples, what was planned and when the strategy was changed.
First, two positive examples: the race in Hungary, with Hamilton's late stop, and Mexico, where Hamilton came extremely early for his only tire change. In Mexico, we just told the drivers that it could happen that the tires would suddenly last longer, but that they should be more prepared for a two-stop race. A one-stop would have required a very radical change in conditions. But that's exactly the change we identified very early in the data. Even before the first pit stops. The signals from our models were so strong that we probably would have trusted them even if we had been in the lead. That's a somewhat frightening idea. It's always more difficult to make such a decision when you're in the lead because everyone else can then react.
How was it in Hungary when Hamilton still brought Verstappen to his knees with the late extra stop?
The crucial thing happened before that: We forced Red Bull into a long stint. The plan was to put Red Bull under pressure early on, either with an aggressive one-stop strategy or with a second stop. The situation in the race was difficult to predict. No one could have guessed that the two leaders would be driving alone in the field without a chaser. That usually doesn't happen. But with the data on tire wear and the length of the Red Bull's stint at some point in the race we realized that the second stop was our best chance of victory. Lewis was hanging right in Verstappen's gearbox before that. but we didn't have much to lose either. It was great that it worked out that way in the end, and it was nice to see how the fans reacted after the race. But the crucial thing wasn't the second stop itself, but that we had put Red Bull in a weakened position due to the pressure beforehand. There was a short phase of two laps at the end when Max was able to increase his pace and we doubted a little bit, so we had to motivate Lewis as well. It's difficult for the driver. From the cockpit, he can only see what's happening 200 meters in front of him. He doesn't know the simulation that tells him: Everything will be fine! For a driver, it must feel terrible to suddenly be 16 seconds behind another car and someone tells you: Don't worry, you're going to win the race.
So you understand who he sometimes complains about decisions?
Absolutely.
From the outside, however, it looks like Bottas doesn't question the decisions as often and trusts the strategy team more.
Lewis sometimes asks questions, but he accepts a decision if you explain the situation to him over the radio.
Of course, we also have to address races that didn't go optimally. We picked the chaos at Hockenheim and the race in Singapore, where Mercedes lost to Ferrari and Red Bull despite having the faster car.
Hockenheim went badly? I don't remember that at all (laughs). No, just kidding. A lot of things went wrong at the German GP. It's a good example of what happens when you suddenly fall out of a structured plan. We made a lot of mistakes. But the crucial mistake happened just before the end. During the final safety car phase, practically anyone could have won the race with a pit stop at the right time. But I'd lost confidence because I'd made mistakes earlier in the race. We know that our models and simulations aren't always right and that intuition is sometimes called for, but when a few mistakes happen in a row, you start to have doubts. You don't know what to believe anymore. And in a rain race, there are usually no good simulations. There is a lack of information. You don't know where the transitions are between rain tires and intermediates. You have to learn very quickly. I can proudly say that our team is usually very strong in such conditions because we stay calm and make good decisions as a result. But at Hockenheim we made a few clear mistakes that caused us to fall behind.
What went wrong during Lewis Hamilton's chaotic pit stop?
That was very unusual for this team. The problem was that we'd called Valtteri in for a tire change just before, while we were tracking his progress on the GPS tracker. Suddenly we see a Mercedes with a torn front wing in the pit lane, but the color of the camera didn't match Valtteri. It was Lewis. It took us eight seconds to make sure the tires that were ready were not mounted on the car, because that would have meant an immediate exclusion. You can't put the wheels of one car on another. At the same time, we had to make sure that Valtteri didn't stop in the pits behind Lewis, but drove through. Fortunately, he realized himself that he would lose positions and stayed out of his own accord. But the wrong car in the pits paralyzed us for a mo. ment. In this decision-making process, all I had to do was turn around for a moment. Then I would have seen immediately that it was far too wet for slicks. It took me ten seconds to realize that we had to put on the intermediates. The mechanics had already got the slicks when we told them not to let the car go without intermediates. That delayed things even more. It looked terrible from the outside. And it felt awful, too. Fortunately, all radio messages and GPS data are recorded. Then every single decision is analyzed together afterwards. After Hockenheim, there was an extremely long debriefing session in which everyone openly explained what they had done wrong, how the mistakes had happened and what we should do differently in the future.
Can you prepare at all for such extreme situations?
There were a few things that we could have done 100 percent better. We also questioned our way of working. From time to time, you have to look at things with a little more distance. And you can't rely solely on things like the weather forecast, you just have to look out for yourself. The whole thing has opened our eyes a bit.
And what didn't go according to plan in Singapore?
We had thought that we had an advantage over the distance with the tires. But our problem was that Leclerc slowed down so much at the beginning that we never knew how fast he could really go. I had the 2010 season finale in Abu Dhabi in mind when Webber lost the championship to Vettel because of an early pit stop. We had three cars behind us in the pit stop window. Our fear was that Leclerc would pick up the pace at the front as soon as we pitted and we would then lose a lot of time in traffic. We were so stuck in our thinking that we missed some important signs. For example, Verstappen called in on the radio and said his tires were no longer good. We made a crucial mistake in our simulation: we didn't consider what would happen if the driver in the lead was driving slowly but not taking good care of his tires. We had simply applied our own tire management model to Ferrari. Our approach would have been to keep as many cars as possible in the pit stop window. But Leclerc managed the pace in such a way that gaps opened up. So we didn't know how fast he was really capable of. We didn't know that he was already driving close to the limit. What makes this case particularly painful is that we brought Valtteri in so he wouldn't lose his position. And then we had to brake him in so that the order of our cars didn't change.
You contacted Bottas directly over the radio. What has to happen for you to talk to the drivers?
That always depends on the circumstances. Normally, I shouldn't be heard at all. When I do intervene, it often means that a driver has to act for the good of the team. In the case of Singapore, Valtteri had to make sure Albon stayed behind him. Last year, for example, I also intervened in Sochi when it came to swapping places in a race.
Do you consult with the race engineer or Toto Wolff beforehand?
Of course, this kind of thing always happens in consultation with Toto. I also inform the race engineers before I talk to their drivers. But something like this doesn't happen out of the blue. Let's take Sochi last year: We told Valtteri via the race engineer that he had two laps to overtake Verstappen. When he didn't manage that, we took over. So it didn't come as a surprise.
Does it bother you that the radio message "Hey Valtteri, it's James..."' has gained such notoriety?
No.
Hamilton decided on his own authority to delay the stop in Austin.Does something like that annoy you?
The drivers are always allowed to say if they don't agree with an instruction. We then talk about it again and make it clear when the decision is final. In this case, Lewis tried to stay out one more lap. That was detrimental to him. His race was affected by that. But there is a reason why we did not react here: This was a race in which the world championship title would be decided. I've seen this happen several times now, where drivers have a problem with team control when it comes to securing a championship. You can't try to restrict the driver in the process. We made that mistake in Abu Dhabi in 2016. We didn't want to repeat that here.
You had already briefly mentioned the final of the2010 World Championship in Abu Dhabi, where Sebastian Vettel became world champion against Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso. Alonso was on the radio at the time and tried to warn the team that they were fighting the wrong opponent. How would they have acted?
Fernando didn't say: I'm not coming in for a pit stop. He just said what he thought would have been the right strategy. When our drivers don't agree with a decision, they don't just say no. Instead, they give information that they don't agree with. In Lewis' case, it can happen that he says before a pit stop that his tires are still okay. But he only does that because he thinks he has information that the team doesn't have. And that's the right thing to do. The same applies to Valtteri. We'd even be disappointed if the drivers didn't express their opinion.
Would you agree that strategists make Formula 1 more boring with their detailed predictions and simulations?
I've been doing this job for 19 years now. My opinion is that this season we have seen some of the best Grands Prix I can remember. I include races where we didn't look good. What made Ös terreich, Hockenheim, Budapest or Spa so great was the joint battle of drivers and strategy against other teams. And they did it in such a way that the races had spectacular endings that no one could have foreseen. We see that teams operate at a high level and cars fight directly against each other closely on the track, which is a new evolutionary stage. In the past, teams simply ran circles around their opponents thanks to strong drivers, pit stops and strategy. But that kind of thing doesn't happen anymore. I hope that this Formula One year will be remembered not only for our historic title win, but also because we produced some spectacular races.
But wouldn't it be even more interesting if strategists had to listen more to their instincts?
It's true that our forecasts are getting better and better. But it also leads us to take more risks. I agree with you that spectators don't want to see strategists settling the race among themselves. They want to see heroes on the track. performing an incredible overtaking maneuver. That's why people love this sport. A race with less information-for example, because of rain on Friday-may be more unpredictable and therefore more interesting. But I don't think that's a reason to take information away from the teams.
The DTM has introduced a radio ban. The drivers now have to act more independently. What do you think of that?
For me, Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport. That means that it's not individuals who fight against each other, but entire teams. We at the track are just the tip of the iceberg. Behind us are more than a thousand other people who support us. The entire team pulls together to win races in the end. That makes the whole thing unique. That's why I think it's positive. Not because I'm a crazy engineer who loves doing the job, but because I think it's a team sport.

I handed in my DG assignment (question 1, prove that the tangent bundle of a smooth manifold is always orientable... and that was like the easiest question) and now have three weeks of tensor bundles and riemannian metrics to catch up on. Before I get started preparing for the tutorial on Anal 1 (analysis 1 to the un-enlightened) that I have to teach tomorrow, I decided to read the Logan Sargeant article in GQ. It smelled incredibly fishy... like a product placement. The product is Logan himself.
So, I am going to write another version of it that gets straight to the point.
original article is accompanied by sexy photos
so if you think that logan is sexy you may enjoy them.
Below the cut. Meet Logan Sargeant, America's Great F1 Hope
translation : Meet Logan Sargeant, America's Great White Hope
Logan Sargeant is a 22-year-old American male. He has blonde hair, light eyes, a square jaw, and the sort of glinting crooked grin that will prove a threat to safe-feeling boyfriends on the several continents where F1 runs. translation: He's WHITE. Please think that he is hot.
While sitting in the living room of Mario Andretti last spring, I asked him about the prospect of a full-time American F1 driver in the near future, and he responded with a story that has stuck with me. About a decade ago, he said, he visited the Red Bull factory in England, and asked Red Bull team boss Christian Horner about some young American prospects: “And the rebuke I got was unbelievable,” Mario told me. “He said, ‘You know if you bring an American driver here, we’ll destroy him.’”
translation: He's disadvantaged by the mean Europeans for being Americans. Please support this smol bean.
But could an American driver overcome the biases by committing to their system and winning on their soil? When Logan left Florida for Europe after elementary school, he made that commitment all the way—and hasn’t really been back to the US to race since.
translation: look at the sacrifices he made by leaving the land of no human rights to go and stay in switzerland
Sargeant doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories, but his uncle is a billionaire, and his ascent to the summit of international racing did begin with a rich-kid Christmas present. Neither parent ever raced cars, but Dad decided to get the boys go-karts one Christmas because Mom didn’t like the dirt bikes they were riding. “It was honestly just about finding a new thing to have fun with,” Logan said. Five-year-old Logan and eight-year-old Dalton started taking their go-karts out to the track at Homestead and Opa Locka, just a weekend thing at first. But they got hooked. And each steadily overtook the competition in Florida and the Southeast. Win after win. “And so it was: OK, now what do we do to make it harder?”
translation: This is a rich person sport, which you are aware of. Logan is rich, we can't hide it because his family is in the billionaire class and has deep involvement in the murky politics of the America including bribery and uh, other stuff, that we will discuss. But um his family was not THAT rich. You can still feel good about rooting for him! He's not just an American Stroll/Latifi or good FORBID an American Mazepin
Logan finished up fifth grade in Florida while the family made their move to Switzerland. In addition to the racing opportunities, Dad had business there. (Dad’s company, it should be acknowledged, was taken to court a few years ago by the US Government for bribing officials in three South American countries to secure asphalt contracts. The company pleaded guilty and agreed to pay over $16 million in fines.) In Europe, Logan quickly began ascending through the ranks, traveling throughout mostly Italy to karting races on weekends. “I definitely felt like school was a lot more challenging than in Florida,” he recalled. “And we were missing a lot of school, for sure, but that’s part of it with racing. It is what it is.”
translation: ok. Yes, we admit it, the Sargeants are wealthy. And his father's company has been bribing government officials in South America and are doing such a large volume of business that they paid 16 million in fines. But let's just skip over that part. It's not really that important. The important part is that this young man who was financed by dirty money is just SUCH a young man and deserves your attention. Look, he missed school to race, look at his passion!
“We’ve been searching—in a little bit of a ditch trying to find out what we can do,” Logan told RACER in February 2021. “Try and find something in sports cars or I’d even consider Indy Lights [the support series of IndyCar]—that’s a really cool option.” Here he was, just two years ago, mapping out his retreat from formula racing in Europe with the press. Openly musing about his prospects in the lower ranks of American racing. The article that featured those quotes put an even finer point on things: “Logan Sargeant will not step up to Formula 2 this season and is unlikely to remain on the FIA path to Formula 1.”
translation: He almost missed the chance to be in F1.
But maybe that encounter with Pitt last year was even more meaningful to Sargeant than he even realized. Maybe those side knuckles were a blessing of sorts, an off-loading of expectation, a transference. Maybe it was Pitt communicating to Sargeant that he needn’t carry the weight of the sport in America alone, because he, Brad Pitt, would help do it instead. At least for a little while. Hollywood could take the spotlight while Logan Sargeant found his feet, clocked his hours in his race car, and proved himself to be the glorious mid-pack F1 driver we all know he can be.
translation: He's carrying all of America's hopes and dreamz

Audi announce new simulator driver as they take next step in F1 power unit development
Audi have signed Swiss racing pro Neel Jani as their new simulator driver as they take the next step in developing a power unit for their Formula 1 project. Jani, 39, is a former test and reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and, as a member of the Porsche factory team, he won the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2016 as well as the famous 24-hour race at Le Mans. German brand Audi announced last summer that they would enter F1 from 2026, when new regulations come in, and would be building their own power unit. They soon struck a deal to take over the Sauber works team – currently Alfa Romeo – for their entry. BARRETTO: How Sauber are preparing for Audi’s arrival – and keeping the pressure on in the midfield battle Plenty of preparation has gone into the project, with the likes of Andreas Seidl leaving McLaren in December to join as the new Sauber CEO while former McLaren technical director James Key will join the team in September. Jani, who has also driven in GP2 and Formula E, will now have his own important role to play for Audi as he supports the development of the power unit with his vast experience. An update of the dynamic driving simulator for the work on the F1 hybrid powertrain is also being run at Audi’s Neuberg site in parallel. Audi have signed Neel Jani as a simulator driver to aid in the development of their F1 power unit “I am delighted to accompany Audi on their way into Formula 1,” said Jani. “It is both an honor and a great responsibility to be involved in a project of this magnitude at an early stage. “I am sure that with my experience from Formula 1 and [sportscar] projects I can forge good links between theory and practice.” Oliver Hoffman, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development of Audi AG, added: “Just like in production development, simulation plays a major role in our Formula 1 project. “Our simulator is an important tool for the power unit development. It requires a development driver who, in addition to a grasp of technology, brings versatile experience to the project, especially in terms of energy management in racing conditions.” Audi have also stated that, since the end of 2022, testing of a one-cylinder engine has been delivering “valuable results” for the development of the power unit. The manufacturer added that the continuing concept phase is laying the groundwork of the power unit for 2026, when the new regulations will provide for increasing electrification. READ MORE: 'It's the next revolution' – Tech chief Pat Symonds explains why Formula 1 is leading the push for sustainable fuels “However, in evaluating various technical solutions we rely not only on digital methods. Know-how, experience and practically relevant development are indispensable elements of drawing the right conclusions from the simulation. "With that combination, we can assess various operating strategies at an early stage and pave the way for efficient energy management of the power unit.” Audi have also said the first hybrid power unit, consisting of the internal combustion engine, electric motor, battery and control electronics, is planned to be run on their dyno before the year is out. That will then provide the basis for the future vehicle concept going forward. via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

The Aston Martin car being that promising … taking strengths from SF75 and RB18. I don’t want them to be a threat to Ferrari but they clearly are.
With a great quali Alonso would have challenged Charles with that race pace and tyre deg. It’s crazy.
All the worst if Mercedes and Carlos can’t keep up with the fight with AM.
Could we revoke the cost cap only for Ferrari so they can finally have a winning car. We know they are going to do bad things anyway and they won’t win the WCC or WDC. It would just be for the show. Please FIA & F1. No disrespect to Alonso but I’d quite like the younger generation.
It really does seem to take the best characteristics from the F1-75 and the RB18. I've seen a bunch of comparisons to the F1-75 in particular. I still maintain that Ferrari should've stuck with that concept, the very first initial one they rolled out in Bahrain, before all the upgrades started slowing the car down and exacerbating deg, and built on that. It seemed like a strong foundation. Then we kept hearing that this year's car will be an evolution of that, only to find out that actually, this car has different characteristics, and they're having a tougher time coming to grips with it and extracting maximum performance out of it compared to the fresh-out-of-the-factory F1-75. There just seemed to be a lot more confidence in that package right out of the gate, whereas the SF-23 seems to keep surprising them, its behaviour is not exactly aligning with their simulations, we're hearing that they feel they still have speed to 'reclaim' (around fourth tenths) through upgrades (provided they get them right, of course) and so on.
Agreed, I was really hoping Mercedes and Aston would duke it out amongst themselves for third and be a bit of a buffer, allowing Ferrari to focus on challenging Red Bull, but now it seems Aston's going to be a more direct competitor for Ferrari than expected, which can only benefit Red Bull.
It's crazy, because I really don't think it's the money that's holding Ferrari back. Even with the budget cap, I mean... they finished P2 in the Constructors' last year (their highest finish since 2019) and they get an additional annual "legacy payment" (still applicable even in the so-called cost cap era I believe.) They have the resources. And yet 😭😭😭😭😭 (Adrian Newey I'm on my knees fr)
Honestly though, driving for Ferrari should be seen as a handicap where you get a little bonus for enduring the Ferrarista pain😭 Like idfk, start awarding points for qualy or something. 🙃😭
And I totally agree on the younger generation point. Good for Alonso if he still wants to race (and if he actually made the right team move at the right time, this time) but I, for one, was ready for a Max vs Charles rematch and now............... 🙃 Given the hype around the first few races last year when everything was still to play for and the way Max and Charles raced each other in Bahrain and Jeddah, for example, I think there's definitely an appetite for that. But we keep getting denied a proper, lasting championship fight between them, one way or another 😭😭😭
