Y'know what, I think I do actually have a standing answer to this! Although now I don't know whether to be concerned or not cuz it's an old line XD But I posted an unfinished (as in, bracketed author's notes still in the text kind of unfinished) fic specifically so as not to lose the line, so I shall slap it in here.

Ah. Turns out it works best as a set of lines, but it was still the first thing that popped into my head, so here goes:

Carlos was counting the lab mice, suspicious that the bonsai they lived next to may have picked up some carnivorous tendencies. [...] Carlos lost count of his mice. His hands hovered over the cage, frozen. What had Cecil just said? Miss Frizzle? Aunt Valerie ? It refused to process. Carlos turned away from the cage to grab his phone, missing as the bonsai unfurled a branch and snagged a mouse by its tail and dragged it, shrieking, into its thick leaves.

💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

Oh, gosh, there are a few contenders. I could say the first one I remembered making, because I got to hand it to Mary Pope Osbourne before I knew giving authors fic was Bad. And I really don't remember much about the contents of it, just that it was handwritten and I did a little cover for it.

Of my modern fic, I think I'll pick two, due to them being the fics I've shown the most commitment to.

Face to Unfamiliar Face, recursive fic of @tulipscomeinallsortsofcolors's Love and Other Fairy Tales. I think about it a lot because I'd like to do more work on it. Alas, every time I go into it thinking that this time I will post it to AO3, I start sketching out major structural edits and get scared of the workload and let the poor thing keep languishing. I should just carry it over directly and then redux it later, just for the purpose of archiving it. Maybe I'll do that today. (Thank you in advance if so, Willow 💜)

And The Princess's Son (Ba, Ba), a Witcher fic where Jaskier is Renfri's kid. It haunts me constantly. I think as-posted, it's finished and satisfying from a reader's perspective, but from my Author's Vision it's unfinished, so the haunting continues. Alas, the redux keeps stalling out in the first few chapters. And then I don't want to just skip forward to get it started with because I feel like I can better build up the Lilit stuff so it's not such a Deus Ex Machina, even if I don't think I've changed all that much about the mechanics of her whole Thing. 😭

😎 What fics do you prefer on a scale of canon compliant to wildly original?

I think solidly in the middle as a reader? I know I lightly avoid 'modern AU' tags in AtLA and Witcher and stuff, but not strenuously. I like plenty of Sanders Sides fic where they're proper people and not just figments in the mindscape. But I think I also prefer to read when it's not super rooted in canon, either? Fleshed out side characters and Everybody Lives, Nobody Dies for the win, baby!!!

Now as a writer...

One of my provided filter-able tags is canon divergence XD I still like to keep things pretty rooted in canon, though. I like having a scaffolding to build around. Going too far into original territory tends to make everything feel a little too wobbly.

I think the most original I get is smashing together fandoms that don't necessarily make sense based on tiny details. (Or details that aren't there. Ben Wishaw and Colin Morgan are just. Connected in my brain for some reason and so I have Once And Future...Spy?!)

I've been on the other end, where I was the one rewriting someone else's fic. But I didn't post it, and I never will, because that feels enormously disrespectful. I wrote them for my own satisfaction, or as practice, or because I didn't like the way a character was portrayed and wanted to fix it. To then turn around and post exactly the same fic but with my "fixes" smacks of plagiarism to me, whether or not it technically falls into the standard definition of plagiarism.

If the other person was writing Nonny's story from a different characters POV, that would be one thing. But rewriting the exact same story and changing nothing? That's rude at best, imo.

This is more of a question for the fanfic author community at large. Recently I had someone tell me they were writing a fic based on my fic. I was obviously flattered by it. But when their fic was posted, it was basically a re-write of exactly what I'd written. And that made me feel uncomfortable, because my story was a very specific AU. I know in fandom/fanfic anything goes and people are free to do what they want. Who am I to say 'no you can't write this'? I brushed it off and let it go. But it just got me internally asking: what are some rules of decorum around fics inspired by other fics? Can I as an author say it made me uncomfortable? If author A is writing something based on author B's work, is it expected for author A to tell author B about it? I welcome any other discussion on this topic that I didn't cover in my questions because I'm curious to see what others think! Thanks!

I'm not going to lie to you, anon, this one can be a bit of a minefield.

There's a tradition? (if that's the right word) in fandom of asking permission before writing a work inspired by someone else's fanwork.

While we don't do this with the creators of canon, we also don't share a community with the creators of canon. In fandom spaces, everyone knows everyone to a certain degree. This might be less true now that fandom has exploded in popularity in recent years, but even so.

I personally love when someone writes something inspired by my work, and I've written a few fics inspired by others too. It's part of that community sharing that I value so much in fandom.

But the minefield comes in when the original fan author feels like the "inspired by" fic is a little too close to their own.

Emotions can be fraught in online spaces where tone is hard to convey over text and there tends to be an assumption of the worst motives and interpretations rather than the best.

You're definitely well within your rights to feel uncomfortable about what that other person wrote. I'm not going to tell you that your emotions are wrong or unfounded. In fact, I'd likely feel the same way if I were in your place.

What you do about that feeling is your own decision to make. Do you just sit on it and hope it goes away? Do you reach out to that other author and say something about it? Do you just vent to a friend and get it out that way?

Folks who have had similar experiences, share what happened if you're willing. From either A or B's perspective.

Summary:

After a longer-than-usual absence, Luo Binghe returns, and Liu Mingyan immediately realizes that he seems...different. It's not a bad difference--far from it, he seems very happy--but it is surprising, especially in conjunction with the strange man he's brought back to the palace.

Or: a story in which Ning Yingying gets a ballpoint pen, Sha Hualing gets glasses, and Liu Mingyan gets a whole new lease on life. And also a tiger.

Notes: Ok so I wrote a sequel to Really Luo Binghe, because when you get down to it I'm addicted to metafiction. And also I really wanted to give Ning Yingying a ballpoint pen.

“Yes,” Draco hisses, “because we haven’t spoken at all in twenty years, which bring me back nicely to my original question: what in Merlin’s name are you doing?”

“I,” Potter answers, then doesn’t finish.

“If you’re stalking me again,” Draco says, folding his arms over his chest, “I’m just going to file a restraining order.”

“I’m not stalking you,” Potter answers defensively. “I just… I’m just flummoxed by you!”

“Flummoxed? What the hell about me is so flummoxing?”

“Everything!” Potter snaps. He gestures to Draco’s clothes. “You’re wearing Muggle athletic wear for a start—”

“It’s Lululemon! I can’t bloody well do yoga in my fucking Unspeakable robes, can I?”

“Since when have you done yoga?” Potter continues, as if it’s an extension of his original point. “I can’t imagine it’s particularly en vogue within pureblood circles!”

“Actually, yoga was pioneered by Indian wizards over two thousand years ago—”

“And you’re eating Muggle takeout and drinking Starbucks—”

“I didn’t have time to cook last night!” Draco cries, a little defensive. “And Ellie at the Starbucks down the street makes a better London Fog than I ever could—”

“—and listening to fucking AC/DC on your iPhone,” Potter concludes, gesturing to the little white earbud strings still dangling down his chest. “People can change, Malfoy, but generally not this much!”

“And how, precisely, the fuck does it matter to you?” Draco barks. “Why the sudden interest? So I like curry and classic rock now, in what way is that any of your business?”

Potter opens his mouth, but doesn’t seem to have an answer. His too-green eyes flicker down to Draco’s Lululemon leggings, and now that they’re facing each other, Draco realizes—

Is Potter staring at his leggings, or at his legs?

Several things in Draco’s head rearrange themselves. Is that why Potter’s been harassing him these past few days?

“I guess it’s not,” Potter answers eventually, recovering as well as he can from a silence that had gone on just a hair too long. He looks up at meets Draco’s eyes.

Draco wants to say, Aren’t you married? The question is dangling right at the edge of his tongue; he can practically taste it.

Eventually, though, he swallows it back down. He’s gotten something wrong. There’s no way that Harry Fucking Potter of all people, heteronormative savior of all the Wizarding World, has been checking out his ass in yoga pants.

“Glad we’ve gotten that settled, then,” he says airily. “Potter, please try to relax. My Starbucks-drinking, Led Zeppelin-listening ways are not part of some grand plot to destroy the world.”

“I,” Potter says, looking a little embarrassed, “I didn’t think they were.”

“Wonderful. Then feel free to stop following me around.”

“I wasn’t—” Potter gives up the sentence halfway through saying it. He shakes his head. “See you around, Malfoy.”

ecclesiastes 1:9 anon here and wow. this entire time i thought that the reveal at the end was hinting that this was a shared time loop and that the key to breaking it lay somewhere in both brock & jonas making changes to ultimately break the cycle. i had no idea that the loop was entirely brock’s and i can’t wait to re-read the fic again in the near future with that new tidbit of knowledge in mind esp since it makes me more hopeful about the ending. thank you again!! i know that 10-15 years from now when i’ve probably moved past hockey i will still think about this fic. :)

i mean. at the same time. it's also sort of that. because jonas IS aware of what's happening to him, and he's choosing to remain stuck despite feeling and behaving as if he has no agency.

there's a level of that fic where it's like, here's what's directly happening in the narrative, right, here's the tropes it's riffing off, but there's also a level where the whole thing is a metaphor. jonas has been trapped in this harmful cycle for so long, the toxicity of hockey culture, the repeating patterns of physical and sexual abuse, that he no longer has the capacity to see it as something that can be surmounted. getting stuck in a literal time loop of bad choices repeating over and over reveals that to be the case, but he's past the point where he understands how to get out of it even having finally identified that he's stuck.

crucially, both brock and jonas are trapped in the loop (and, incidentally, so is everyone around them; the only difference is two people here are aware of it). in a way they were both trapped the moment they first signed up for junior hockey. the moment they met. when they fucked in that hotel in sweden. all of this stuff is true at once. to me, the reason this becomes brock's loop is because he's young enough to not be completely entrenched in it. he becomes aware of the problem, the cycles upon cycles they're stuck in, and immediately has the need to find a way to pull himself AND jonas out. but it's hard enough to extract yourself from a harmful cycle, nearly impossible to extract someone else from their own self-defeating behavior with the power of love alone, if they're not willing to meet you halfway.

i think my first answer was a little bit incomplete, lol. or rather: the reason that this is brock's loop to effect and change is essentially that jonas has opted out of having agency in the situation. he knows that something's wrong, but he's too afraid to change. so yeah, I do envision that if there's any way for them to get out, it has to be together. having accepted that there is a problem, both of them need to change. that's, i guess, the central question at the heart of the fic: how do you escape a toxic cycle, when everything around you is reinforcing it? when you've fed into it and reinforced it yourself, as well as being victim to it?how do you HELP someone change and find their way out?
