Advice for Creating a Magic System
As a fantasy author, I thought I'd share my 5 tips for creating a captivating magic system.
1. Are you writing low fantasy or high fantasy?
Firstly, it's good to know from the get-go whether you're creating a magic system for a low fantasy or high fantasy story.
Low fantasy doesn't necessarily mean there are less fantastical elements or that the story has to take place in a version of the real world. Low fantasy simply indicates that the fantasy elements/magic is not commonplace in that world. Magic and other fantasy elements exist, but only a privy few know about it.
Examples of low fantasy stories include Harry Potter by She Who Shall Not be Named, the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and my book To Wear A Crown.
High fantasy, on the other hand, indicates that the fantastical elements and magic are known about and commonplace in that world. The people of the world know that magic exists, that there are fantastical beings, other races etc.
Examples of high fantasy stories include Eragon by Christopher Paolini, Crescent City by Sarah J Maas, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien, and Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.
2. Hard magic systems vs soft magic systems
The next thing that's vital to decide is whether you're creating a hard or soft magic system.
A hard magic system has built-in limitations. There are certain things that magic can do and that's it. Examples of stories with hard magic systems include Avatar: The Last Airbender and Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo.
A soft magic system doesn't have inherent limitations in relation to what it can achieve. Examples of soft magic systems include Eragon, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings.
3. What can magic do?
Now that you know whether you're writing low or high fantasy, and whether you're working with a hard or soft magic system, it's time to create some magic!
This is the part where I can't give you too much guidance, because it's all about your creativity.
What do you want magic to look like in your story? What do you want magic to be able to achieve? How big of a role do you want magic to play in the story and your characters' lives?
Do you want different classes of magic wielders, each with mastery over their own element? Do you want magic to be a flexible tool that can be used to achieve almost anything? Do you want your magic to be limited to telepathic actions or creating portals? Do you want different people to have power over different aspects of nature or different magical disciplines?
Can wielders use magic without any tools, or do they need spells, runes or rituals?
The possibilities are endless, but it's important to establish exactly what magic is capable of in your world.
4. How does it work and where does it come from?
Now we know what the magic can do. Next up is why it can do those things. Where does the power of the magic come from and how do wielders command it?
Does the power/force of magic come from within the wielder? Does it draw from inner life force and energy? Does it draw on energy from another realm or dimension? Does it pull from the surrounding natural elements? Does the power come from a deity or from demonic forces?
Identify the source/origin of the magic.
From there, elaborate on how it works. How does a wielder access the source of the magic? Is it through strength of will, incantations, selling their soul etc.?
For example, let's say that the power of your world's magic comes from the cosmic energy of another dimension. In order for wielders to access that energy, they draw specific sigils on their skin and these sigils act as portals to that world. Once the sigil is complete, the cosmic power flows into the wielder and they can now command it.
5. The limitations
Very importantly, you have to be clear on the limitations of your magic system. Fantasy magic systems often fall flat because they don't have clear confines.
If you're writing a hard magic system, this step is a bit easier, since there are inherent restrictions on what magic can do. With soft magic systems, you have to decide just how much magic is capable of.
But whether you're writing a hard or soft magic system, you need to consider the cost of using magic.
Does the use of magic drain the wielder's energy? Does each instance of using magic darken the wielder's soul or deteriorate their body further? Does using magic damage the natural world around the wielder or drain others of their life force?
Magic without a cost, limitations or consequences just isn't as captivating.

(Y/N) : Your ego holds no bounds
(Y/N) : Do Outworlders speak English? I am not interested

(Y/N) : You literally got deceived by your titan double. I’m good
Shang Tsung : You are far too beautiful to be with a man like Liu Kang
(Y/N) : And my mouth is producing far too much vomit
Shang Tsung : If you don’t become my queen - you will become my enemy
(Y/N) : I already AM your enemy
(Y/N) : If I didn’t want you in the last timeline- what makes you believe I’ll want you in this one?
Shang Tsung : I can be very persuasive
(Y/N) : Of all the people that could be obsessed with me - it had to be a miserable sorcerer
Shang Tsung : You will fall for my advances eventually
(Y/N) : Stay the hell away from Liu Kang
Shang Tsung : I will. Once you join me
Shang Tsung : You were so close for falling for me in the original timeline
(Y/N) : Don’t remind me of how idiotic I used to be
LIU KANG VS (Y/N)
(Y/N) : I don’t think I can take much more of that sorcerers flirting
Liu Kang : I will put an end to it, my love
(Y/N) : So I fall for you in every timeline?

Liu Kang : You are the only woman made for me
(Y/N) : You always know how to make my heart race
(Y/N) : Come on. It’d be new and exciting

(Y/N) : You say that as if he’s been flirting with you. I’m the real victim
(Y/N) : Is it getting hot in here or is it just me?
Liu Kang : Your puns are both cute and insufferable
LIU KANG VS SHANG TSUNG
Shang Tsung : (Y/N) will fall for me eventually
Liu Kang : You are fooling yourself if you believe she would ever want you
Liu Kang : Stay away from, (Y/N)
Shang Tsung : You and I both know that deep down she craves for my darkness
Shang Tsung : I almost had her in the original timeline
Liu Kang : Only because of certain events that had taken its place
Shang Tsung : You call me the villain but you specifically crafted this timeline to make (Y/N) fall in love with you
Liu Kang : I am not capable of that kind of power nor evil. (Y/N) fell in love with me by her own free will as she has done through out other timelines
Shang Tsung : If you want her so bad, why have (Y/N) meet me?
Liu Kang : It was bound to have happen and as I have done every timeline, I gave (Y/N) the choice whether she wanted to be consumed by your greed and darkness
Liu Kang : (Y/N) does not want to be with you, sorcerer
Shang Tsung : If she doesn’t then why does she always end up back to me?
Shang Tsung : (Y/N) will fall for my power eventually
Liu Kang : That very statement proves you do not know her as (Y/N) is not attracted to power and greed
Shang Tsung : If I win, you’ll let me have (Y/N)
Liu Kang : (Y/N) is not a prize to be won
Shang Tsung : Together, me and (Y/N) can rule all realms
Liu Kang : Im sure (Y/N) would be interested in the man that got deceived by his own double
Shang Tsung : I could treat (Y/N) better than you
Liu Kang : Better? You tried to kill her in the original timeline

“Sauron = Power” in Galadriel’s character arc in “Rings of Power”
“Rings of Power” canon building on Tolkien lore.
Sauron and Galadriel represent Dark vs. Light (and the push and pull between the two sides), yes. But it’s more deep and complex than just this basic dynamic. Allow a Tolkien nerd to be of service:
Tolkien’s Galadriel is power-hungry and spent ages trying to repent for this, at the eyes of the Valar, and attempting to gain their pardon, to be allowed to return to Valinor.
A penitent: in her youth [Galadriel] a leader in the rebellion against the Valar (the angelic guardians). At the end of the First Age she proudly refused forgiveness or permission to return [to Valinor]. She was pardoned because of her resistance to the final and overwhelming temptation to take the [One] Ring for herself. - Tolkien, Letter 320
Rebellion against the Valar
In Tolkien lore, she refused their gift of returning to Valinor at the end of the First age, because she wanted a kingdom of her own, she wanted to rule, she wanted power.
In “Rings of Power” this was connected with her hunting down Sauron to avenge her brother, Finrod (who was killed by Sauron’s werewolves in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, protecting Beren). This, alone, established the parallel of “Sauron = power” in Galadriel’s arc in “Rings of Power” canon.
That’s why she falls in love with Halbrand. But Halbrand = Sauron, as Season 2, also, established, and this was Galadriel’s main conflict in Season 2, too (realizing it’s Sauron/power she fell in love with), but this is far from over.
This is obvious in this scene in 1x08: Sauron’s offer is that he would make Galadriel “a” queen. She’s the one who says “and you. My king. The Dark Lord.” She wants to be the Queen of Middle-earth (thirst for power) with Sauron as her king consort, because “Sauron = Power” in her “Rings of Power” canon. And she refers to him as the “Dark Lord”. She’s talking about Sauron himself, not “human Halbrand”, here.
That’s who she truly wants, because his physical form doesn’t matter. Halbrand or Annatar, those are only physical forms. He’s always the same immortal spirit from the Unseen world (Mairon), no matter what physical form he takes in the Seen world.
This is further confirmed in 2x07, in her scene with Celebrimbor. He says “I blinded myself to what he was” and “a part of me knew”, but he wanted what he offered. And Galadriel agrees with everything: so did I.
Deep down, Galadriel knows that Halbrand = Sauron, and it’s Sauron whom she wanted all along. This also implies that Galadriel somehow suspected (or had an intuition) that Halbrand was actually Sauron, back in Season 1. Again, because Sauron symbolizes Power in her character arc in “Rings of Power”.
Banish from Valinor
The show has yet to mention the “little detail” of Galadriel being banished from returning to Valinor (not sure if they will), but this sentence from the Valar, in “Rings of Power” is connected with her feelings for Sauron: Galadriel loves power/Sauron, and for that reason she has been banished from ever returning to the Blessed realm.
Repentant sinner
Hence, Galadriel will try to earn the Valar forgiveness, for two entire ages (Second and Third ages), working against Sauron.
She will be tormented by her love for Sauron/power until the Third Age; when she finally resists Frodo offering her the One Ring (power = Sauron). This symbolizes her giving up her power thirst, at last, and humbling herself before the Valar to earn their forgiveness (her repentant arc is complete).
With the canon “Rings of Power” is building, this will, also, symbolize the end of her love/lust for Sauron, or the diminishing of her feelings for him, to a point they won’t longer torment her as they did before. I think the second option is more likely, because Season 2 established that “Elven memories do not dim”.
In this way, Lothlórien becomes Galadriel’s golden cage (literally), where she’s safe from Sauron’s reach, and where she hides from the rest of Middle-earth. In Tolkien lore, she doesn’t leave much (only for White council meetings) because Nenya’s power is needed at Lothlórien; to protect it from Sauron and his servants, essentially. In Tolkien canon, it’s also established that Sauron could only enter or conquer Lothlórien if he went there himself (which he never did, even though Galadriel was his main adversary among the Elves).
“I Know Your Mind”
“I see you.”, “The door is still open”. Sauron tells Galadriel these things because he knows she wanted to take his offer (to be Queen of Middle-earth).
But only after Sauron forces them to bind together using Morgoth’s crown, does he realizes something else: Galadriel is in love with him. Which explains his reaction right here:
I don’t think Sauron actually knew until this point; he knew they shared a connection, but he probably didn’t know it was romantic, from her part, too. In Season 1 finale, he calls himself “her friend”, but in Season 2, there’s no mention of it, and he gets teary and emotional after the binding (especially when he thinks she’s actually going to join him.)
And he declares himself: “I would have placed a crown upon your head. I would never have rested until all Middle-earth had been brought to its knees, to worship the light of its Queen.” He goes back to his offer from Season 1 finale because, again, Sauron = power in Galadriel’s arc in “Rings of Power”. This is Sauron way of saying that he’s in love with her, too.
She still resists him, and denies him, and he pierces the crown deeper because he wants the blood binding to actually work. And that’s why he asks her for Nenya through mental communication, to test the bound. And it worked. They are bound together.
Let me In
“Rings of Power” canon explains why Sauron never stops grouping Galadriel’s mind for thousands of years into the future, in Tolkien lore. He knows she’s in love with him.
Even after she “closes the door” of her mind to him, and he’s rendered formless after the Fall of Númenor, he still feels it (via blood bound), and never stops trying to get Galadriel to low her walls, and allow him in. Because they can be together in the Unseen world, still.
But Galadriel resists:
Her conscience doesn’t allow her to be a part of his evil plans of world domination;
She wants to be pardoned by the Valar and to be able to return to Valinor (where her entire family and friends are waiting for her, because elves are immortal spirits);
In 1x01, Elrond tells her that only in Valinor she can heal from everything she endured on Middle-earth. She’ll probably believe this will be true for her feelings for Sauron, too.
I didn’t want to go there, but “Rings of Power” canon also explains why Galadriel and Celeborn have such a lukewarm marriage (to say the least) in Tolkien lore. They spent more time apart than together in the lore, and her being in love with Sauron and them being bound together can explain that. Because who could ever compete with that? So to that I say, poor Celeborn, but this is the canon “Rings of Power” is building upon Tolkien lore.
I joked about “Half-Maia Celebrían” but I don’t think the show would ever go that far (I think). Celebrían will, most likely, be conceived when Galadriel and Celeborn are trying to make their marriage work or something like that.
Doomship
Galadriel and Sauron are “doomship” because of their choices. Another major theme in both “Rings of Power” and Tolkien lore: “choose good” every day, until it becomes part of your nature.
Galadriel chooses to be good and to follow the light, while Sauron chooses evil and the darkness. And for that reason they can’t ever be together, in spite of their love for each other.
How does it end?
We don’t know. Because great tales never end, according to Tolkien himself.
We know Galadriel travels to Valinor, at the end of the Third age, while Celeborn stays behind in Middle-earth. After the One Ring is destroyed, Sauron is left diminished and weak, unable to regain his power ever again. He can’t truly die, because not only he’s immortal but one of the forces that first shaped the world (Maiar). We don’t know where he goes.
Does he go to Valinor, too, to finally face the judgment of the Valar and get a sentence for his crimes? He won’t be sent to the Void (like Morgoth) because (1) he’s only a Maia; (2) his crimes were as nearly as comparable to Morgoth’s (who pretty much corrupted the entire world). Him being bound to Galadriel raises interesting questions, in this.

Kidnap Fam vs Earendil and Elwing controversy: Regarding the twins
Maybe I’m too practical-minded, but I see a lot of people either supporting or exaggerating kidnap fam, hating it with all their being, or ignoring the whole ‘love grew between them’ to translate into ‘emotional manipulation, hatred, resentment… etc (being anti-canon)’. I’ll respect opinions, frankly, I really could care less about them, but it does get irritating when people throw canon away for the drama (I certainly get annoyed when extreme pro-kidnap fams fans make it all sunshine and rainbows as if it wasn’t a difficult time or situation).
By the way, I can and will say that the twins can feel emotions, they are allowed to do that. Resentment and love can exist at the same time (for only a period of time) but one or the other must fade in order for the other the linger. One has to be consumed in order for the other to burn.
But just a thought, Elrond and Elros could love all of their parents equally, no more, no less than the others. One became a healer and the other, a king, I think they came to understand their foster father(s) and their bio-parents’ decisions.
(Ay maybe I just suck at emotions and all this feelings stuff and have no idea what I’m tolkien about)
And I’m not trying to call out or bash anyone!
I saw (and wanted to share) the quote,
“if your anger burns the furnace in your soul your whole life, you will be forever cold in the grave.”(I’m paraphrasing, I can’t remember the exact quote)
I cannot imagine Elrond or Elros being resentful to the point were they are vicious or unforgiving, whether it was towards Elwing, Eärendil, Maglor, or Maedhros (I really don’t think he was involved too much but if you swing that way).
I don’t want Elros to be cold in his grave, and I certainly don’t want Elrond's fëa to be burning for the rest of his immortal life.
Then I also had the thought, 'if the Fëanorians had never committed the third, worst, kinslaying, then Elwing would have never flown the Silmaril to her husband and they would have never gotten the help of the Valar.'
I personally headcanon that it was Eru’s work at hand to have Maglor raise Elrond and Elros. Think about it, what if they were spoiled in an alternate universe? What if something worse had happened to the twins? What if? What if?
What if they didn't become who they were meant to be if it wasn't for who they were raised by?
By the way, I read LOTR, I know Elrond refers to Eärendil publicly as his father and he makes no mention of Maglor. I analyzed this in three ways. 1.) Elrond must keep (the memory of) Maglor closed off, locked in his heart rather than talking about him more. 2.) It would've caused drama in his realm and in the counsel. 3.) Elrond really doesn't care, his father is his father, that's it. Zip. Maglor raised him, but Maglor is gone now. In a way, Eärendil is more present than Maglor in Elrond's life by the third age. Elrond can physically see the star, but he can't see Maglor.
I see it in the third way mostly. Eärendil is Elrond father, biologically, so why would he do this "My 'real' father" BS? It just seems like a waste of time. Tolkien probably didn't want to confuse anyone since the Silmarillion couldn't be published with LOTR.
Remind me of that quote from Yondu, "He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy." But I really didn't want to refer to that quote considering Peter and Yondu's relationship is not the best example to compare this cluster of daddy issues to. Nevertheless, there is a point to be made in that statement. There is a difference between relation in regard to Nature vs Nurture, and the effects of it.
I guess the whole point of this post is, the fandom tends to take canon lore to the extreme or over analyze things to the point where they're just projecting. Trust me, I've been there, done that. I've learned my lesson (I think) and I wanted to share what I've learned.
Also (this is purely opinion) I don’t think Maglor was manipulative about anything, in the book, he just didn’t come off that way, for as little as he appeared, he actually seemed to be pretty optimistic (*regarding Eärendil) and honest (*the debate with Maedhros). He didn’t try to excuse himself or get the twins to pity him. Maglor raising the twins was out of pity/mercy, yes, but love grew (like what Tolkien said). He probably educated them on the facts and encouraged them to form their own opinions, whether that costed him their love or not. Maglor did have the more accurate moral compass compared to his brothers (in the end of the book!- Put down your pitchforks Maedhros stans!), especially if he knew that the Silmaril was better beyond their reach than where the enemy can also reach it. It was an accurate moral compass, although not a big one.
Argue, agree or disagree, or discuss with me! I want to hear different perspectives or opinions on this matter.

I had been looking at the theories about what Sylus is, and I took it upon myself to use my nerdy powers to research, look for relationships between things and an explanation, this is still a theory, I don't have the absolute truth.
Caution contains spoilers
The first thing we have to take into account is the meaning of his name, Sylus is a diminutive of the Greek name Silouanus, derived from the Latin name Silvanus, from silva, which means "forest".
With this we can look for a root within the Greek mythology, among the myths there are two that we can highlight:
1. Cronos, Cronos is the name of the King of the Titans who dethroned his father Uranus and whom we know as "Father Time", who is represented with his relentless sickle and accompanied by a crow.
2. Apollo, Apollo fell in love with the daughter of a king, whom he courted and fell in love with and got pregnant, however Apollo had to travel and left his beloved but to protect her he left a crow following her everywhere, however the woman cheated on Apollo with another man and according to interpretations Apollo or his sister, Artemis, kill her but save the baby who was Asclepius, God of medicine.
However these are very noble associations for the Sylus Backstory, so we can also consider Hades or Ares.
In the case of Hades, crows were considered his faithful companions and guardians of the underworld. It was believed that these dark birds accompanied the god on his travels through the realm of the dead and acted as his eyes and ears in the underworld. Their presence was seen as a symbol of the connection between the world of the living and the dead. The crow of Hades was considered a symbol of protection and good omen. Its presence in the world of the living was believed to be a sign that Hades was watching over and protecting those who were loyal to him. On the other hand, it was also thought that the crow of Hades could punish those who defied the established order and dared to challenge the god of the underworld.
On the other hand, Ares, the god of war, also had a close relationship with the crows. These birds were considered his allies and were associated with violence and death on the battlefield. Their presence was interpreted as a harbinger of war and bloodshed.
Crows occupy a prominent place in Greek mythology as divine messengers and bearers of omens.
Now on to the favorite child, Mephisto.
Mephistopheles (also called Mephisto and other variants) is a demon of German folklore. Mephistopheles is commonly regarded as a minion of Satan charged with capturing souls, or else as a type character of Satan himself.
Mephistopheles is associated with the Faust legend of an ambitious scholar, based on the historical Johann Georg Faust. In the legend, Faust makes a deal with the Devil at the price of his soul, with Mephistopheles acting as the Devil's agent.
So we can think that Sylus, like Zayne, has some relationship with some kind of god, a god of death, war or time, which if we think of various gods there are many that represent more than one thing like Sekhmet who was the goddess of war, the drunkenness and of the medicine or the goddess Tiamat, the goddess of the creation and the Chaos, so we can consider that inside the universe of LADS The god representative of Sylus is the god of the time, the war and death and for that reason we are in a cycle of eternal reincarnation between to live, to fight and to die, and assuming that was the case it could be a matter of a fight between gods, Astra vs. The god of Sylus, both want the Aether protocore which has ended up in MC's hands time and time again. However Sylus like Apollo, fell in love and instead of taking the Aether from her, has protected her with Mephisto, keeping surveillance over her, but as Mephisto is in charge of always watching MC he knows everything she does where she goes and who she relates with, that way Sylus knew that MC was looking to enter the N109 and as in the legend thanks to Mephisto MC manages to make a deal with Sylus who would be like "Satan" or the "bad guy".
Within the game with Sylus reference is made to both things with Sylus, when "the monster with wings and horns" appears people die but for MC it is a symbol of protection.
And Sylus probably knows what is going on, in the last chapter they have released when MC tells Sylus that she saw something he deflects the conversation and doesn't give it importance, which is suspicious.
So we can think that Sylus, is some kind of demigod, one that being related to bad things like death and war is satanized as a demon, like Hades who in mythology did not do anything bad but in the present time if you look for a villain of Greek mythology it is always Hades, so this explains many things about Sylus.

LMK OC COMPETITION - ROUND 1
Ao Hai Wang belongs to @turquiosescales
Yīngwǔ Hángbān belongs to @wr3n-th3-4n1m4t0r
Learn more about them below the cut!
Ao Hai Wang:
Hai Wang is stoic, cold, and quiet, however, he wasnt always like this. Before, he was more emotional and fun, and he loved Lu Jiao (his brother) with all his heart. However, due to connections with his brother and the pressure of becoming a bigger and better person within the Ao family, he was forced to bury away his emotions and passions to become the image his family wants.
He is one of the leaders of the Ao family, in which Lu Jiao wanted to take his position to prove that he can be just as important. He has a strained relationship with his brother, not just after their disagreement, but also because of his brother's affilations with the Brotherhood.
Yīngwǔ Hángbān:
he’s so stupid oh my god
Yīngwǔ was an avian from a small clan in the woods, appearing similarly to Dracula parrots (super cool birds, seriously Google them sometime!). However, Yīngwǔ would often meddle and joke with a local villager for fun, despite all the protests from his clan and the victim themself. He received threats day in and day out, but never listened. Little did Yīngwǔ realize, the local he had been toying with was very close with the Celestial Realm; a monk of some sort... (NOT Tang Sanzang, for clarification.) As repayment for his incompetence, the monk reached out to the Celestials for a proper punishment to the winged boy.
And so, they lent a circlet to the monk, which was promptly placed on its recipient: Yīngwǔ Hángbān himself. Any attempt to escape the monk, especially to flight, the circlet would tighten around the boy's neck until he began to choke and was forced to come down, conscious or not. Another factor of the punishment was the boy must serve this monk as his master. For 2 years Hángbān attempted to escape his owner, yet it tightened nonetheless. Soon, he gave up altogether, fearing the thought of one day dying in an escape attempt. Finally, on the third year, the boy was released, yet with new fear in mind.
His story is often told to children in order to prevent them from causing mischief, and he became known as The Meddler.
Fun facts about the silly traumatised bird man!:
- He refuses to fly for fear of being choked, and has phagophobia.
- He often appears rude to strangers and those he doesn't trust. Don't worry, he's a lot softer and kinder when you gain his trust, which isn't an easy feat.
- He does have a scar around his throat due to the circlet, but it's mostly, if not fully, covered by the feathers on his neck.
- He's very socially anxious, though always attempts to de-escalate any situation required.

Lore: Dating, Marriage, Sex, etc
Part 1/2
Link: Disclaimer regarding D&D "canon" & Index [tldr: D&D lore is a giant conflicting mess. Larian's lore is also a conflicting mess. There's a lot of lore; I don't know everything. You learn to take what you want and leave the rest, etc etc etc]
DnD isn't exactly a dating sim, so most of this lore comes from mining Ed Greenwood's answers to questions, but since his answers are apparently canon unless and until contradicted in published realmslore, here you go.
It's mostly in regards to human culture (and the Heartlands, Waterdeep etc at that) but I'll throw in some demihuman stuff here and there.
So sexuality, and the norms and moral values Torilians build around it: More tolerant and kinkier than Earth, for the most part, and still not a perfect bed of roses. (You won’t face legal oppression; you can get called slurs.)
Attitudes in the Realms
Dating
Sex (and a bit about contraception and conception)
Sexual Orientation
Polyamory
Cut for space and expected in the follow up: marriage, sex work, religion, and the absolutely deranged shit going on in some noble families.
-
Attitudes about relationships in the Realms
The long and short of it is that the root of Toril’s mainstream attitude towards sex and relationships draws from the sexual revolution of the ‘60s and ‘70s.
Cultural variations on and subversions of these norms occur, but the rule of thumb, especially as it applies to the video games is as follows:
Sex is not a terribly big deal nor innately taboo; pseudo-puritan attitudes are solely the province of some old high priests on a few religions in a minority of a minority. Virginity and the loss thereof is meaningless unless you're nobility.
Pretty much anything is legal so long as all parties involved are capable of giving and gave consent on most of the planet (though legal isn’t the same as ‘approved of’).
Of course TSR, and later WotC, fell very much on the side of ‘we can’t publish that!’ So it got massively obscured. It only really came through now and again, usually in sly little hints that could get past the radar/editors, becoming more obvious with 4e and 5e (Although Sune and Sharess were flat out stated even back in 2e to ignore gender when they’re in the mood to seduce mortals, and we'd already had Mystra saying that gender is basically just a costume for gods (which Mask illustrates.))
The Realms itself still has bigotry to go around, of course, but generally it's the clergy of a select few gods and the nobles who'll make a fuss about such things, and the latter only in regards to their own social circles and inheritance shenanigans. A traveling merchant who encounters a culture that practices forms of relationships he personally disproves of was probably raised to be polite and keep the slurs unsaid; diversity encourages trade, offending your neighbours does not.
What is and isn’t morally acceptable to an individual is determined by church doctrine and dogma (which determines many of life’s aspects, including love and sex and what's good or bad (chastity vs promiscuity, monogamy vs polygamy, whether procreation is mandated or not or even a sin, if loving people instead of despising them is a sin or not, and what acts are taboo))... and all that as interpreted by the local priests, who may not agree with their fellows’ interpretations. Some gods declare chastity a sin and want you to engage in as many romantic and/or sexual relationships with as many different people in as many different ways as humanly possible. Loviatar mandates BDSM and Ilmater doesn't frown on it either.
Most deities probably aren't going to discriminate. Gods see the universe in terms of their portfolio: what aids it is good what opposes it is bad. Most portfolios aren't terribly impacted by mortal love lives and hormones so I suspect the vast majority of gods could not care less, and, as per Faiths and Avatars, the gods 'generally try to be as liberal as possible to try and attract as much worship as they can.'
With Toril being polytheistic all of these gods are due respect and conflicting dogmas are just a fact of life. Several times a day a person is likely to be confronted with a choice – usually a minor one – where one action will serve some gods and be a sin in the eyes of others, and the rule of thumb is that everybody accepts you can’t please all of them all the time. You live according to the gods you favour above all others and respect the faiths of those you don’t: you expect that people will mind their own business and do them the same courtesy.
In the majority of the realms, including the cities and realms of the Heartlands, Silverymoon, Waterdeep and etc, at least, people are open minded and tolerant. A rule of thumb is that cities are more liberal and rural areas more conservative, but even then their norms and values don’t necessarily match the modern earth norms that might spring to mind; the nuclear family unit is not necessarily seen as default and polyamory is very common in some villages.
Largely, there’s not a whole lot of emphasis put on identifying your sexuality or making it a big part of who you are: most Torilians wouldn’t understand the point of drawing attention to sexuality outside of occasions where it’s actually relevant. If you were visiting Baldur's Gate and pointed out two men getting married at the temple of Tymora the people around you would be utterly confused about why you felt the need to single out the gender of the couple.
‘Individuals may find [queer relationships] too much for themselves to handle, but the laws and general attitudes of society don’t frown on it.’
You may have to ‘pick your neighbours and friends’ to live comfortably, but that’s significantly easier to do on Toril than Earth especially because you should have no reason to worry about persecution or discrimination under the law for deviating from whatever moral code a particular priest might be espousing.
Bastard children and wedlock don't cause a fuss so long as you're not a highborn (or found to have cheated on your partner, one assumes).
Contraception is widely available and family planning is emphasised; you are firmly encouraged to use it in a dangerous world where famines and disasters mundane and supernatural mean babies at the wrong times can lessen the chances of survival (for you and them).
-
Dating
Somebody who catches your eye is 'glim,' as in 'oh no he's hot' or 'she's well fit' or whatever. A Torilian who's very attractive is 'right glim.' As in they're 'glimmering.'
A term for a pair of lovers is 'brightbirds.'
Your 'fancyman,' 'fancylad,' or 'fancylass' is what your disapproving relatives will call your lover that you insist on seeing for reasons that escape them.
Waterdhavians call the target of their affections their 'rose,' which may get confusing as in other dialects a 'rose' is the slang term for a submissive woman in a Dom/sub relationship.
Red and black are considered the erotic/'sexy' colours. Garments featuring black lace and leather in particular.
Many priests, curiously, seem to find potential partners more attractive if they get a tattoo of their deity's holy symbol.
You can advertise your interest by wearing an artificial rose pinned to one shoulder: red signals that you're looking for a long-term romantic partner and black shows you're looking for sex. If the rose is made of steel then it indicates you're looking for a partner of the same gender. Wearing multiple roses indicates you're looking for multiple partners, but you might expect some raised eyebrows or comments if people think you're being overconfident. It's very rare to see women doing this looking for men, since it's thought of as a 'man thing' (wlw doing this to seek each other out apparently don't count to said men).
Sunites, as devotees of the goddess of love and beauty, are available for matchmaking services, advice and make overs.
Dancing - especially erotic dancing - is a large part of courtship trends across the cultural board. Which might tie in to the fact that all the goddesses of lust and love - Sharess/Zandilar, Sharindlar, Sune, Sheela Peryroyl, and to a certain extent, Lliira - are dancers or have dancing as a thing within their faith. Lliiran clergy give dancing lessons, and Sharessans and Sunites probably don't mind teaching either.
The only description of what a one might wear if one is feminine and wants to dress up and look fancy in human culture - the equivalent of a 'little black dress' - is a simple black gown with a high collar and plunging neckline in the front (the latter of which is optional). It's matched with a sash and boots and some small jewellery. If you want to 'dress down' the gown is pinned open to expose either bare skin or the underlying chemise (if you're going for a 'classy' look it'll be lacy and white).
Dwarven courtship involves a slow exchange of crafts made by ones own hand (this can be tools or physical artwork or things like poems and songs, the point is to illustrate your skill and the care you put in). You send it to the dwarf you're interested in, and hopefully they respond in kind. You then spend years doing this and slowly getting to know each other, eventually moving in and seeing if you can settle into something that can last past the initial spark before tying the knot.
Elven courtship apparently involves poetry, songs, and yet more erotic dances.
Drow have courting games called 'spider hunts' usually played at festivals by young drow, which are basically hide-and-seek.
-
Sex (and a bit on procreation)
You can't just fuck somebody right in the market square, but borderline public sex hidden on a rooftop, or ducking into an empty alleyway is pretty common and tolerated behaviour. You are, however, encouraged to keep your shenanigans off the streets lest you 'scare the horses,' take yourselves home or to the nearest festhall/brothel, and keep your 'public displays' limited to appropriate festivals (Greengrass, for example, which is a fertility festival and usually involves dropping all inhibitions for the day).
Lingerie comes in black and red and lace clouts (underwear) and dethmas (bras) which can be readily bought in most cities. Lace-up boneless corsets and shapewear are available as unisex garments.
Sex toys named as existing include whips, dildos, clamps and 'tingling creams.'
I've heard something about halfling orgies, but have found no details beyond 'exotic food.'
And in the Realms you're more likely to say 'rutting' rather than 'fucking' when being vulgar/casual about sex. Unlike 'fuck' it doesn't seem to double as a curse.
If you're considering bedding a priests be warned that as gods are said to derive power from having their name said aloud priests tend to call their gods name in bed. Fervently. The enthusiasm and emotion behind it is supposed to have a positive effect.
Elven foreplay involves sensory deprivation and ear nibbling.
Contraception, as mentioned, is stressed upon. People are concerned about plagues, famines, monsters and other concerns that lead Faerûnians to place a lot of importance on family planning. Contraception is generally delivered via divine magic - a cleric or druid can render you temporarily barren/sterile, guarantee conception or freeze a pregnancy at its earliest and least detrimental stages to be resumed at a safe date. People can ensure that their children will be born in times when it's best for them to be born. Elves have apparently mastered birth control, and it's basically impossible to get a child from an elf when they don't want one.
You can also ask the gods nicely and if you make sufficient offerings the deity can also rearrange your organs a bit to change the way you procreate (or possibly allow you both methods). Generally people will ask the deity they have the most positive relationship with, but Sune and Lliira are the favoured choices in the pantheon. Of the gods not recommended are Bane, Shar, Malar (whose idea of the perfect transformation is lycanthropy) and Selûne (who gladly supports you, but she's considered too mercurial and everchanging. She's not one transition she's eternal, ever shifting transition beyond the human physical endurance or mental comprehension.)
Arcane magic can manage physical modification via transmutation and glamours, which people often play with either as part of exploring their gender identity or just for fun, but transmutation via divine magic is vastly superior at allowing you to be fertile after the change if that's a goal. Arcane magic struggles with that. Arcane magic that allows for surrogacy and sort of IVF apparently exists, having been invented by a pair of liches that wanted a child for whatever reason, but I don't know how commonplace that is.
-
Sexual Orientation
Most people freely experiment in their youth, working out their preferences. Heterosexuality is the default, with bisexuality making up a sizeable second place and other sexualities constituting a fairly sized but unremarkable minority.
Obviously, the Isle of Lesbos does not exist and so neither does the world ‘lesbian’; Toril doesn’t have Earth’s terminology, it has its own words. It should be noted that some can be used in a derogatory fashion, although, considering reality, they could very well be reclaimed or have been stolen terminology twisted into slurs. The given terms, in Common, are:
Thruss - Lesbian Liyan - Gay man (elvish slang loanword) Praed - Gay man (gnomish slang loanword) Tasmar - Bisexual (masc.) Shaeda - Bisexual (fem.) (elvish slang loanword) 'No-thorn' - Asexual
Butches (‘harnor’) and effeminate mlm (‘dathna’) are liable to get scorn for their gender presentation more or rather than their sexuality.
-
Polyamory
In some lands (unspecified which ones) it's unremarkable and even expected for a relationship to be open by default.
While obviously it's not socially acceptable to jump into anybody's bed with no consideration of your partner's feelings on the matter, it's not a foreign idea to see love and lust as separate concepts.
In rural areas one can find villages that definitely don't follow the nuclear family model with mixed families living under one roof, and symbolic polygamous marriages may factor into the traditions of some seasonal festivals. For example in Turmishan a farmstead is traditionally inhabited by a family consisting of four married people, usually two men and two women.
#What I really learnt is that clerics and druids are definitely pretending you're their god when they're with you#and that Durge's... uh interests might be legal aside from the graverobbing#long post#edgelord hours#lore stuff

One Piece Academy chapter 40: Cora san part 2 (Quick translation)
source | part 1 | index
Sanji: Huh..? Aren't you...?
Luffy: Who?
Nami: Luffy! We've just seen this guy in a photo a while ago!
He's Corazon!!
Cora: Guh..!
*tap tap*
Nami: Ah, he's running!
*wham*
Nami: Ah, he fell ;;
Cora: Law, what's the meaning of this? How did this place get busted?!
Law: I'm in a state of shock myself... I swear I wasn't being tailed by anyone.
You guys, how did you...?
Robin: Underestimated our skill of gaining intel, haven't you?
Sanji: You did a good job hiding your tracks, but...
[flashback]
Luffy: Traffy... he's totally gone, huh.
Bart: Ah, Luffy senpai! It's been a while beh!
Luffy: Oh? Isn't that Romeo!
Do y'all know Traffy's place?
Bart: Naa I don't.. Gambia, do you?
Gambia: I dunno. Lemme ask my granma at home.
Gambia: Helloo, granma! Do you know where Trafalgar Law lives?.. Hmm, hmm... oh?
*pulls up a map*
Gambia: She says he lives here! Even gave us details on how to enter!
Bart: Granma really has all the wisdom beh~!
Luffy: COOL!! Thanks!!
Cora: THIS IS WAYY BEYOND THE REALM OF WISDOM THOUGH!!
Usopp: She also said, "if you're worried about the doorknob's prickly static shock, just touch the wall with your palm first."
Law: So she shared some real wisdom too? That damned Bartolomeo!
Zoro: A man believed to be missing is here, 'hiding' so nobody can find him - so it seems.
Corazon:...!
Since I got busted already, I guess there's no going back.
*cracks knuckles*
I'll make sure to make you feel at home.
Coby: Woah!
Law: DON'T START A RICEBALL PARTY!!
Luffy: What flavor is that one, Corao?
Cora: That's umeboshi! Law hates it.
Law: Cora san... ;
Cora: It's okay, Law..
Cora: After all, the only visitors we get in this home far from the town are Bepo and team. And that's just Law's pals.
Law: They're... not exactly pals...
Cora: That said, it's not like someone is expected to live here. The entrance is far down some secret underground passage. We buy our groceries from the neighboring Swallow city.
*clang*
Nami: Why all these secrecy?
Coby: Where are you going?
Cora: Follow me! I'll show you.
Luffy: Traffy's place seems fun!
Law: Make sure not to ravage it.
Cora: This is.. The Doflamingo countermeasure Headquarters.
Nami: The Doflamingo countermeasure Headquarters?
Luffy: That's a lot of Mingo!
Cora: You get the gist of a secret opposing faction, don't you?
In short, we call it "Vs Doff.." "Quarters.." well, something.
And not just Doflamingo, we collect information about the Family executives.. Even about the Onigashima middle school.
I investigate here everyday.. *tapping some keys*
And think of countermeasures.
<bzzzzz>
Coby: YOU JUST SHUT IT DOWN!
Cora: Crap, I blew it up again...
Nami: Cora chan, might you be a bit clumsy?
Cora: I have always been a clutz. It doesn't get better.
Vivi: We know that Doflamingo is a bad guy who needs to be stopped.. But do you, as his brother, have any specific reason for your action?
Cora: As his younger brother, my goal is...to prevent my older brother Doffy from falling into the dark world.
Brook: Dark..
Chopper:... World?
Cora: Do you know what they call Doffy in the town?
Coby : I'm pretty sure it's Joker, "The Town's Charisma"....
Cora: He's a regular hot topic among young admirers, my brother's got that talent in him. But..
He's being approached by the people from the dark world - meaning the Bad adults, as they observed those qualities.
To be honest, brother does have the predisposition and ideas for 'evil.' He's already a bad guy, you can't call him good even as a flattery.
Zoro: Will he remain as the Town's Charisma, or become a Charismatic Evil?
If it's the latter, that'd be way more serious that being just a bad, flawed person...

Please vote for whoever’s best at being a hater, not who you like the most. If unfamiliar with a character, check out the propaganda below the cut!
Jiang Cheng from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (MDZS)
Submission 1: Hates Wangxian's relationship.
Submission 2: Dude devoted more than a decade of his life to hating on his dead kind-of-brother (it's complicated) how has he not been submitted already? bonus points for his actor's many faces of utter disgust in The Untamed

Summaries:
Paeliae - Magic politician
A mage living in the period when the god vs mages war starts. (8 BD, before dissolution) He is a politician, despite having no patience for the ages old elvish mages who currently run the council. He is obsessed with leaving a lasting legacy even if that means dying today. As such he is vehemently against the concept of immortality, During the war he helps negotiate with the gods to come to a truce. 27, He/Him.
Xaeren - Runic Inventor
Xaeren designed 42 of the 47 runes and uses them to protect himself from the vengeful goddess Schaeres. When she finally attacks him, Xaeren realises there were very few limits to what he could do with the runes and sets out to kill Schaeres, both as payback and just to prove that he can. But some things can’t be done alone…
Xaeren lore 1
Xaeren lore 2- (This is a bit old so some of the Kell stuff has changed)
Xaeren lore 3
Kell - Magic Student
Xaeren rescues her from a small dock town and gets her a place at the Lysandri school of magic. Kell is thrust into a world of magic and has to keep up with the help of Xaeren’s tutoring, but as she begins to fit in with the mages there, her loyalty to the criminal godkiller Xaeren comes into question.
Tyro - Traumatised Sorcerer
lives in the modern day (about 1500 PD, post-dissolution). They have recently escaped from the abusive cult that adopted them as a child, with their adoptive brother Apollo. They are a sorcerer, so have born magic, but also we’re taught to use runes by the cult. They never used them because of trauma but they could if they wanted to. They are currently running from the cult and trying not to be noticed by the government, who take in all sorcerer children so they can have a monopoly on magic. They have found a family in some other sorcerers living in an abandoned manor outside the city. 17, They/them
Apollo - adopted older brother of Tyro.
He took care of them and the others in the cult, despite being abused severely himself. Despite the trauma he is a very powerful runic. He is currently being attacked by, and looking for other cults like the one he was adopted into to help other children like him. 21, He/They
Ez and Rin (~1000 BD)- The gay bois, who definitely don’t start the apocalypse.
Ez (short for Ezemhaziel) is the god of refined magic. He falls in love with Rin when he is researching to create the runes. He is somewhat of a Prometheus figure, as he brings the first magic to mortals by teaching Rin.
Rin is a gardener working for one of the altic kings, who equally loves Ez for his magic and creativity. Ez and Rin end up working on the runes together. The other gods get mad that Ez gave magic to a mortal, and they let the mortals murder Rin. Ez is mad. This will spiral and cause the start of the godly war, which then ushers in the godly mages war, where 3/4 of all mages die and the gods are removed from the world.
Ezemhaziel lore
Daimion and Marsh - the regretful and the merry murderer
Daimion and marsh grew up together being trained for an elite military unit, which they both got into. While in the unit they are ordered to fire on civilians and they do it, but later Daimion regrets killing innocents and leaves the unit without notice. He goes on to find the daughter of one of the people he murdered that day and the woman who has been taking care of her. He protects them fiercely and tries to make up for what he did. Marsh however, fully commits to the ‘I kill people as a job, I might as well enjoy it’ and ends up being so recklessly violent that he is imprisoned in the highest security jail in the country, which he later breaks out of to commit a massacre, then returns to his cell like nothing happened. This occurs a couple of times until Daimion has to go get him. - Marsh intro - Marsh lore
Just a brief overview of some of the things I am currently working on. I plan to post more about the magic systems and historical events of the world. I also post maps.

Remember this post where I talk about the points "for" and "against" who Nightbringer could be, with the obvious choices being Barbatos and Michael (seriously read that post, so that this post will make more sense)
Ok so more points! To be honest though, this post is less about Barbatos vs Michael and more about Demon vs Angel
1.) MC actually meets and talks with Nightbringer who says he's a demon
BUT he says it like this:
• Barbatos should know by now that MC has never had a problem trusting demons. They're literally in the situation they're in now because they gave a book that could have easily stopped him to the demon that was trying to kill them 5s ago and then pledged to protect that demon & his family and keep them happy
• Angels on the other hand do think like this. We see it from what Luke & (to a lesser extent) Raphael say. From what Lucifer says when he first meets Diavolo. From the (pretty fucked up but also lore/relationship building) angel event. Even from Simeon every once in a while.
2.) It's (probably) not present Barbatos because Nightbringer says that the new path that MC is on will bring about true happiness, whereas the path MC was already on (post s4) was already steadily moving towards what Diavolo wanted (they had a human employed in a high position in the Devildom hello???), and so was also what Barbatos wanted. I'd say it's also probably not past Barbatos (and I talk about why in the post I linked up top)
3.) Nightbringer, also tries to guide MC and get them to do what he wants because he thinks that's the best path, even when they repeatedly say they don't want this. This also feels like something an angel would do? Like demons make pacts with humans and then they have to listen and do whatever the human commands them to. Angels become guardian angels for certain humans, they're not supposed to interact with the humans but they are supposed to protect them - that sounds like there's a lot less of the human's decisions/choices/free will being taken into consideration than when in a pact with demons.
4.) Adam says he heard trumpets right before he met Nightbringer. And look it's been like over a decade since I read the Bible (so please correct me if I'm wrong) but aren't trumpets very famously associated with angels?
5.) Say we take Nightbringer's name very literally, as in Night - Bringer. And Nightbringer's little slam poetry sesh after talking with MC implies it should be taken literally. He brings darkness. And um....
??????
Now I'm not placing all my bets on Nightbringer being an angel.
There's always the possibility it's a third secret Barbatos (which I think would be very funny) or a completely different character
Right now, I'm just simply laying out all the facts that we've been presented with. Eiher way I'm excited to find out who it is (and punch him in the face. I think MC deserves to break his jaw)

Edit:
9.) Presumably-Michael says that the MC allying with Nightbringer would piss the Celestial Realm off

Elaborate on Bingge breaking SY’s heart?
honestly i posted that because i was listening to a song and then promptly forgot what i was thinking. however. i can try to reverse engineer myself. did it with shizun, what am i compared to him?
so:
1) one could say that him ripping shen yuan’s limbs off when he thought he was meeting bingmei in the dream realm could be a certain type of heartbreak, as stretched as the logic might be.
2) via airplane’s shitty decisions bingge-writing-wise, luo bingge eventually became one of those protagonists shen yuan couldn’t defend or even like. he became a caricature of himself, instead of what shen yuan (and even airplane) had expected of him, hoped for him. i’m mainly thinking of the “[…] all the youth and frustrations he’d wasted following [PIDW]” (Vol. 2, Ch. 6). i mean, it’s one way it could be interpreted, right?
3) bingge’s behaviour during the mei vs. ge extra. shen yuan might be resilient, might understand bingge’s perspective and his hatred for shen qingqiu, but no one gets out of that situation happy. least of all bingge’s biggest fan in a former life. yes, he has bingmei, and he doesn’t care that much about bingge anymore, and his opinion of bingge was already in hell. but still.
if my favourite character did that to me. well. i’d probably move on but i’d still be extremely offended. and my ego would take a pretty big hit. but then again, i’m a binghe kinnie. so. take me just seriously enough to respect me and no more please. i make mistakes every single moment of my life.
mainly i was thinking from bingge’s perspective. when he goes back, wouldn’t he hate himself, just a tinny tiny bit? for all the aforementioned fuck-ups? maybe not, he sucks, but. you know. i’m trying my best
so. hm. maybe i’ll come back to this later? if i remember, or if it has any merit. love you for trusting that i had an actually coherent thought. you deserve shizun’s headpats as well
