I read Blood Song by Anthony Ryan this year, and it is easily one of my favorite books I've read in the year so far. It's the first in a epic fantasy trilogy that follows the main character from boyhood to manhood, and his journey from being an excellent monk-like soldier to destroying a dynasty of a kingdom. The way Ryan writes morally gray characters is so fascinating and refreshing. I've read some of his other books, but this one is my favorite by far. I love all the details he puts in each of the major characters, his world building, and the prose. This was definitely a 5/5 for me, and something I can see myself coming back to if I want some crazy intense adventure and story.

For the first time in months Vaelin felt like laughing. “You mean you want a week of sitting on your arse,” Sollis said. “Meditation is normally conducted in a sitting position, master.” Vaelin laughed, he couldn’t help it. Three hours later, as he completed his fortieth lap of the practice ground, he was still chuckling.
